Variables declared in a switch statement before any case statements
cannot be automatically initialized with compiler instrumentation (as
they are not part of any execution flow). With GCC's proposed automatic
stack variable initialization feature, this triggers a warning (and they
don't get initialized). Clang's automatic stack variable initialization
(via CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL=y) doesn't throw a warning, but it also
doesn't initialize such variables[1]. Note that these warnings (or silent
skipping) happen before the dead-store elimination optimization phase,
so even when the automatic initializations are later elided in favor of
direct initializations, the warnings remain.
To avoid these problems, move such variables into the "case" where
they're used or lift them up into the main function body.

We are quite trigger happy in cleaning up the firmware blobs, as we do
so from several error/fini paths in GuC/HuC/uC code. We do have the
__uc_cleanup_firmwares cleanup function, which unwinds
__uc_fetch_firmwares and is already called both from the error path of
gem_init and from gem_driver_release, so let's stop cleaning up from
all the other paths.
The fact that we're not cleaning the firmware immediately means that
we can't consider firmware availability as an indication of
initialization success. A "LOADABLE" status has been added to
indicate that the initialization was successful, to be used to
selectively load HuC only if HuC init has completed (HuC init failure
is not considered a fatal error).

Now that we can differentiate wants vs uses GuC/HuC, intel_uc_init is
restricted to running only if we have successfully fetched the required
blob(s) and are committed to using the microcontroller(s).
The only remaining thing that can go wrong in uc_init is the allocation
of GuC/HuC related objects; if we get such a failure better to bail out
immediately instead of wedging later, like we do for e.g.
intel_engines_init, since without objects we can't use the HW, including
not being able to attempt the firmware load.
While at it, remove the unneeded fw_cleanup call (this is handled
outside of gt_init) and add a probe failure injection point for testing.
Also, update the logs for <g/h>uc_init failures to probe_failure() since
they will cause the driver load to fail.

To be able to setup GuC submission functions during engine init we need
to commit to using GuC as soon as possible.
Currently, the only thing that can stop us from using the
microcontrollers once we've fetched the blobs is a fundamental
error (e.g. OOM); given that if we hit such an error we can't really
fall-back to anything, we can "officialize" the FW fetching completion
as the moment at which we're committing to using GuC.
To better differentiate this case, the uses_guc check, which indicates
that GuC is supported and was selected in modparam, is renamed to
wants_guc and a new uses_guc is introduced to represent the case were
we're committed to using the GuC. Note that uses_guc does still not imply
that the blob is actually loaded on the HW (is_running is the check for
that). Also, since we need to have attempted the fetch for the result
of uses_guc to be meaningful, we need to make sure we've moved away
from INTEL_UC_FIRMWARE_SELECTED.
All the GuC changes have been mirrored on the HuC for coherency.

Add an optional secondary encoder state compute hook. This gets
called after the normak .compute_config() has been called for
all the encoders in the state. Thus in the new hook we can rely
on all derived state populated by .compute_config() to be already
set up. Should be useful for MST and port sync master/slave
transcoder selection.

Currently when we load the driver we set distrust_bios_wm=true, which
will cause active_pipe_changes to get flagged even when we're not
toggling any pipes on/off. The reason being that we want to fully
redistribute the dbuf among the active pipes and ignore whatever
state the firmware left behind.
Unfortunately when the code flags active_pipe_changes it doesn't
set state->modeset to true, which means the hardware dbuf state
won't actually get updated. Hence the hardware and software
states go out of sync, which can result in planes trying to use a
disabled dbuf slice. Suprisingly that only seems to corrupt the
display rather than making the whole display engine keel over.
Let's fix this for now by flagging state->modeset whenever
distrust_bios_wm is set.
Eventually we'll likely want to rip out all of this mess and
introduce proper statye tracking for dbuf. But that requires
more work. Toss in a FIXME to that effect.

dsm handler unregister is a nop, and is only added for completeness.
My unsubstantiated suspicion is that the vga switcheroo state change
would not work as early as we register the hooks currently. In any case
exposing the interfaces to the world only after we've got everything set
up seems prudent.
Also replace the error handling in vga switcheroo register with a simple
error message. This is done at the same time due to lack of error
propagation from i915_driver_register().

Thanks to preempt-to-busy, we leave the request on the HW as we submit
the preemption request. This means that the request may complete at any
moment as we process HW events, and in particular the request may be
retired as we are planning to capture it for a preemption timeout.
Be more careful while obtaining the request to capture after a
preemption timeout, and check to see if it completed before we were able
to put it on the on-hold list. If we do see it did complete just before
we capture the request, proclaim the preemption-timeout a false positive
and pardon the reset as we should hit an arbitration point momentarily
and so be able to process the preemption.
Note that even after we move the request to be on hold it may be retired
(as the reset to stop the HW comes after), so we do require to hold our
own reference as we work on the request for capture (and all of the
peeking at state within the request needs to be carefully protected).

Currently, we skip error capture upon forced preemption. We apply forced
preemption when there is a higher priority request that should be
running but is being blocked, and we skip inline error capture so that
the preemption request is not further delayed by a user controlled
capture -- extending the denial of service.
However, preemption reset is also used for heartbeats and regular GPU
hangs. By skipping the error capture, we remove the ability to debug GPU
hangs.
In order to capture the error without delaying the preemption request
further, we can do an out-of-line capture by removing the guilty request
from the execution queue and scheduling a worker to dump that request.
When removing a request, we need to remove the entire context and all
descendants from the execution queue, so that they do not jump past.

In order to support out-of-line error capture, we need to remove the
active request from HW and put it to one side while a worker compresses
and stores all the details associated with that request. (As that
compression may take an arbitrary user-controlled amount of time, we
want to let the engine continue running on other workloads while the
hanging request is dumped.) Not only do we need to remove the active
request, but we also have to remove its context and all requests that
were dependent on it (both in flight, queued and future submission).
Finally once the capture is complete, we need to be able to resubmit the
request and its dependents and allow them to execute.

If we keep track of when the i915_request.sched.link is on the HW

As we use a mutex to serialise the first acquire (as it may be a lengthy
operation), but only an atomic decrement for the release, we have to
be careful in case a second thread races and completes both
acquire/release as the first finishes its acquire.
Thread A Thread B
i915_active_acquire i915_active_acquire
atomic_read() == 0 atomic_read() == 0
mutex_lock() mutex_lock()
atomic_read() == 0
ref->active();
atomic_inc()
mutex_unlock()
atomic_read() == 1
i915_active_release
atomic_dec_and_test() -> 0
ref->retire()
atomic_inc() -> 1
mutex_unlock()
So thread A has acquired the ref->active_count but since the ref was
still active at the time, it did not initialise it. By switching the
check inside the mutex to an atomic increment only if already active, we
close the race.

If we have a set of active engines marked as being non-persistent, we
lose track of those if the user replaces those engines with
I915_CONTEXT_PARAM_ENGINES. As part of our uABI contract is that
non-persistent requests are terminated if they are no longer being
tracked by the user's context (in order to prevent a lost request
causing an untracked and so unstoppable GPU hang), we need to apply the
same context cancellation upon changing engines.

Currently on execlists, we use a local hwsp for the kernel_context,
rather than the engine's HWSP, as this is the default for execlists.
However, seqno wrap requires allocating a new HWSP cacheline, and may
require pinning a new HWSP page in the GGTT. This operation requiring
pinning in the GGTT is not allowed within the kernel_context timeline,
as doing so may require re-entering the kernel_context in order to evict
from the GGTT. As we want to avoid requiring a new HWSP for the
kernel_context, we can use the permanently pinned engine's HWSP instead.
However to do so we must prevent the use of semaphores reading the
kernel_context's HWSP, as the use of semaphores do not support rollover
onto the same cacheline. Fortunately, the kernel_context is mostly
isolated, so unlikely to give benefit to semaphores.

Currently we create a new mmap_offset for every call to
mmap_offset_ioctl. This exposes ourselves to an abusive client that may
simply create new mmap_offsets ad infinitum, which will exhaust physical
memory and the virtual address space. In addition to the exhaustion, a
very long linear list of mmap_offsets causes other clients using the
object to incur long list walks -- these long lists can also be
generated by simply having many clients generate their own mmap_offset.
However, we can simply use the drm_vma_node itself to manage the file
association (allow/revoke) dropping our need to keep an mmo per-file.
Then if we keep a small rbtree of per-type mmap_offsets, we can lookup
duplicate requests quickly.

dma-bufs are device coherent, with explicit CPU synchronisation provided
via the begin/end cpu access ioctls. As the coherency of the dma-buf is
explicitly defined to be under user control, flushing any caches on
attach/detach of the dma-buf is additional work that doesn't aide the
user in the slightest.

intel_prepare_plane_fb() will always pin plane_state->hw.fb whenever
it is present. We copy that from the master plane to the slave plane,
but we fail to copy the corresponding ggtt view. Thus when it comes time
to pin the slave plane's fb we use some stale ggtt view left over from
the last time the plane was used as a non-slave plane. If that previous
use involved 90/270 degree rotation or remapping we'll try to shuffle
the pages of the new fb around accordingingly. However the new
fb may be backed by a bo with less pages than what the ggtt view
rotation/remapped info requires, and so we we trip a GEM_BUG().
Steps to reproduce on icl:
1. plane 1: whatever
plane 6: largish !NV12 fb + 90 degree rotation
2. plane 1: smallish NV12 fb
plane 6: make invisible so it gets slaved to plane 1
3. GEM_BUG()

The post-fastset "does anyone still need a full modeset?" for
port sync looks busted. The outer loop bails out of a full modeset
is still needed by the current crtc, and then we skip forcing
a full modeset on the related crtcs. That's totally the opposite
of what we want.
The MST path has the logic mostly the other way around so it
looks correct. To fix the port sync case let's follow the MST
logic for both. So, if the current crtc already needs a modeset
we do nothing. otherwise we check if any of the related crtcs
needs a modeset, and if so we force a full modeset for the
current crtc.
And while at let's change the else if to a plain if to so
we don't have needless coupling between the MST and port sync
checks.

handled. Rather than note which preemption events may cause us to rewind
the tail, compare the new request's tail with the previously submitted
RING_TAIL, as it turns out that timeslicing was causing unexpected
rewinds.

We set up a dummy ring in order to measure the size we require for our
breadcrumb emission, so that we don't have to manually count dwords! We
can pass in the kernel_context to use for this so that if required it is
known for the breadcrumb emitter, and we can reuse some details from the
kernel_context to reduce the number of temporaries we have to mock.

This reverts commit d2a4bb6f8b.
So, turns out that this ended up just breaking things. While many
laptops incorrectly advertise themselves as supporting PWM backlight
controls, they actually will only work with DPCD backlight controls.
Unfortunately, it also seems there are a number of systems which
advertise DPCD backlight controls in their eDP DPCD but don't actually
support them. Talking with some laptop manufacturers has shown it might
be possible to probe this support via the EDID (!?!?) but I haven't been
able to confirm that this would work on any other manufacturer's
systems.
So in the mean time, we'll just revert this commit for now and go back
to the old way of doing things.

Virtual engines are fleeting. They carry a reference count and may be freed
when their last request is retired. This makes them unsuitable for the
task of housing engine->retire.work so assert that it is not used.
Tvrtko tracked down an instance where we did indeed violate this rule.
In virtual_submit_request, we flush a completed request directly with
__i915_request_submit and this causes us to queue that request on the
veng's breadcrumb list and signal it. Leading us down a path where we
should not attach the retire.

TGL is suffering of timeouts and fifo underruns when disabling
transcoder in MST mode, this is fixed by set TRANS_DDI_MODE_SELECT to
0(HDMI mode) when clearing DDI select.
Although BSpec disable sequence don't require this step, it is a
harmless change and it is also done by Windows driver.
Anyhow HW team was notified about that but it can take some time to
documentation to be updated.
A case that always lead to those issues is:
- do a modeset enabling pipe A and pipe B in the same MST stream
leaving A as master
- disable pipe A, promote B as master doing a full modeset in A
- enable pipe A, changing the master transcoder back to A(doing a
full modeset in B)
- Pow: underruns and timeouts
The transcoders involved will only work again when complete disabled
and their power wells turned off causing a reset in their registers.
v2: Setting TRANS_DDI_MODE_SELECT to default when clearing DDI select
not anymore when disabling TRANS_DDI, both work but this one looks
more safe. (Ville comment)

There's two references floating around here (for the object reference,
not the handle_count reference, that's a different thing):
- The temporary reference held by vgem_gem_create, acquired by
creating the object and released by calling
drm_gem_object_put_unlocked.
- The reference held by the object handle, created by
drm_gem_handle_create. This one generally outlives the function,
except if a 2nd thread races with a GEM_CLOSE ioctl call.
So usually everything is correct, except in that race case, where the
access to gem_object->size could be looking at freed data already.
Which again isn't a real problem (userspace shot its feet off already
with the race, we could return garbage), but maybe someone can exploit
this as an information leak.

This partially reverts the DMA API support that was recently merged
because it was causing performance regressions on older Tegra devices.
Unfortunately, the cache maintenance performed by dma_map_sg() and
dma_unmap_sg() causes performance to drop by a factor of 10.
The right solution for this would be to cache mappings for buffers per
consumer device, but that's a bit involved. Instead, we simply revert to
the old behaviour of sharing IOVA mappings when we know that devices can
do so (i.e. they share the same IOMMU domain).

The handling of virtqueue_add_sgs ENOSPC error is incorrect because
it can result in out-of-order virtqueue_add_sgs and break fences.
We never get ENOSPC anyway because the caller waits until there is
enough space (the other caller that did not wait was removed in
commit 32d6c2c5b5 ("drm/virtio: Rewrite virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_buffer

Start manipulating DBuf slices as a mask,
but not as a total number, as current approach
doesn't give us full control on all combinations
of slices, which we might need(like enabling S2
only can't enabled by setting enabled_slices=1).
Removed wrong code from intel_get_ddb_size as
it doesn't match to BSpec. For now still just
use DBuf slice until proper algorithm is implemented.
Other minor code refactoring to get prepared
for major DBuf assignment changes landed:
- As now enabled slices contain a mask
we still need some value which should
reflect how much DBuf slices are supported
by the platform, now device info contains
num_supported_dbuf_slices.
- Removed unneeded assertion as we are now
manipulating slices in a more proper way.
v2: Start using enabled_slices in dev_priv
v3: "enabled_slices" is now "enabled_dbuf_slices_mask",
as this now sits in dev_priv independently.
v4: - Fixed debug print formatting to hex(Matt Roper)
- Optimized dbuf slice updates to be used only
if slice union is different from current conf(Matt Roper)
- Fixed some functions to be static(Matt Roper)
- Created a parameterized version for DBUF_CTL to
simplify DBuf programming cycle(Matt Roper)
- Removed unrequred field from GEN10_FEATURES(Matt Roper)
v5: - Removed redundant programming dbuf slices helper(Ville Syrjälä)
- Started to use parameterized loop for hw readout to get slices
(Ville Syrjälä)
- Added back assertion checking amount of DBUF slices enabled
after DC states 5/6 transition, also added new assertion
as starting from ICL DMC seems to restore the last DBuf
power state set, rather than power up all dbuf slices
as assertion was previously expecting(Ville Syrjälä)
v6: - Now using enum for DBuf slices in this patch (Ville Syrjälä)
- Removed gen11_assert_dbuf_enabled and put gen9_assert_dbuf_enabled
back, as we really need to have a single unified assert here
however currently enabling always slice 1 is enforced by BSpec,
so we will have to OR enabled slices mask with 1 in order
to be consistent with BSpec, that way we can unify that
assertion and against the actual state from the driver, but
not some hardcoded value.(concluded with Ville)
- Remove parameterized DBUF_CTL version, to extract it to another
patch.(Ville Syrjälä)
v7:
- Removed unneeded hardcoded return value for older gens from
intel_enabled_dbuf_slices_mask - this now is handled in a
unified manner since device info anyway returns max dbuf slices
as 1 for older platforms(Matthew Roper)
- Now using INTEL_INFO(dev_priv)->num_supported_dbuf_slices instead
of intel_dbuf_max_slices function as it is trivial(Matthew Roper)
v8: - Fixed icl_dbuf_disable to disable all dbufs still(Ville Syrjälä)
v9: - Renamed _DBUF_CTL_S to DBUF_CTL_S(Ville Syrjälä)
- Now using power_domain mutex to protect from race condition, which
can occur because intel_dbuf_slices_update might be running in
parallel to gen9_dc_off_power_well_enable being called from
intel_dp_detect for instance, which causes assertion triggered by
race condition, as gen9_assert_dbuf_enabled might preempt this
when registers were already updated, while dev_priv was not.

by Matt Roper.

Without dedicated cursor planes on DCN we require at least one pipe
that matches the scaling of the current timing.
This is an optimization and workaround for the most common case where

Whenever a pipe has a parent pipe in the blending tree whose recout
