The genpd framework allows users to add PM domains via the pm_genpd_init()
function, however, there is no corresponding function to remove a PM
domain. For most devices this may be fine as the PM domains are never
removed, however, for devices that wish to populate the PM domains from
within a driver, having the ability to remove a PM domain if the probing
of the device fails or the driver is unloaded is necessary.
Add the function pm_genpd_remove() to remove a PM domain by referencing
it's generic_pm_domain structure. Note that the bulk of the code that
removes the PM domain is placed in a separate local function
genpd_remove() (which is called by pm_genpd_remove()). The code is
structured in this way to prepare for adding another function to remove
a PM domain by provider that will also call genpd_remove(). Note that
users of genpd_remove() must call this function with the mutex,
gpd_list_lock, held.
PM domains can only be removed if the associated provider has been
removed, they are not a parent domain to another PM domain and have no
devices associated with them.

It is possible that a device has more than one provider of PM domains
and to support the removal of a PM domain by provider, it is necessary
to store a reference to the provider in the PM domain structure.
Therefore, store a reference to the firmware node handle in the PM
domain structure and populate it when providers (only device-tree based
providers are currently supported by PM domains) are registered.
Please note that when removing PM domains, it is necessary to verify
that the PM domain provider has been removed from the list of providers
before the PM domain can be removed. To do this add another member to
the PM domain structure that indicates if the provider is present and
set this member accordingly when providers are added and removed.
Initialise the 'provider' and 'has_provider' members of the
generic_pm_domain structure when a PM domains is added by calling
pm_genpd_init().

In order to remove PM domains safely from the list of PM domains,
it is necessary to adding locking for the PM domain list around any
places where devices or subdomains are added to a PM domain.
There are places where a reference to a PM domain is obtained via
calling of_genpd_get_from_provider() before adding the device or the
subdomain. In these cases a lock for the PM domain list needs to be
held around the call to of_genpd_get_from_provider() and the call to
add the device/subdomain. To avoid deadlocks by multiple attempts to
obtain the PM domain list lock, add functions genpd_add_device() and
genpd_add_subdomain() which require the user to hold the PM domain
list lock when calling.

When a PM domain provider is added, there is currently no way to tell if
any PM domains associated with the provider are present. Naturally, the
PM domain provider should not be registered if the PM domains have not
been added. Nonetheless, verify that the PM domain(s) associated with a
provider are present when registering the PM domain provider.
This change adds a dependency on the function pm_genpd_present() when
CONFIG_PM_GENERIC_DOMAINS_OF is enabled and so ensure this function is
available when CONFIG_PM_GENERIC_DOMAINS_OF selected.

Functions __of_genpd_xlate_simple(), __of_genpd_xlate_onecell() and
__of_genpd_add_provider() are not used outside of the core generic PM
domain code. Therefore, reduce the number of APIs exposed by making
these static. At the same time don't expose the typedef for
genpd_xlate_t either and make this a local definition as well.
The functions are renamed to follow the naming conventions for static
functions in the generic PM domain core.

There should be no need to expose the generic_pm_domain structure to
clients and this eliminates the need to implement reference counting for
any external reference to a PM domain. Therefore, make the functions
pm_genpd_lookup_dev() and of_genpd_get_from_provider() private to the
PM domain core. The functions are renamed in accordance with the naming
conventions for genpd static functions.

Ideally, if we are returning a reference to a PM domain via a call to
of_genpd_get_from_provider(), then we should keep track of such
references via a reference count. The reference count could then be used
to determine if a PM domain can be safely removed. Alternatively, it is
possible to avoid such external references by providing APIs to access
the PM domain and hence, eliminate any calls to
of_genpd_get_from_provider().
Add new helper functions for adding a device and a subdomain to a PM
domain when using device-tree, so that external calls to
of_genpd_get_from_provider() can be removed.

Debugfs support for PM domains is only enabled if both CONFIG_PM_DEBUG
and CONFIG_PM_ADVANCED_DEBUG are enabled. CONFIG_PM_ADVANCED_DEBUG is
described as "extra PM attributes in sysfs for low-level
debugging/testing" which does not seem related.
Given that the debugfs for PM domains only allows users to view the
state of the PM domains, always enable debugfs support for PM domains
if PM domains and debugfs support is enabled.

The are already cases when pm_genpd_init() can fail. Currently we hide the
failures instead of propagating an error code, which is a better method.
Moreover, to prepare for future changes like moving away from using a
fixed array-size of the struct genpd_power_state, to instead dynamically
allocate data for it, the pm_genpd_init() API needs to be able to return
an error code, as allocation can fail.
Current users of the pm_genpd_init() is thus requested to start dealing
with error codes. In the transition phase, users will have to live with
only error messages being printed to log.

Not all subsystems/drivers that manages devices attached to a genpd
makes use of the pm_runtime_force_suspend|resume() helper functions
to deal with system PM suspend/resume.
In cases like these and when genpd's ->stop|start() callbacks are
used for the device, invoke the pm_runtime_force_suspend|resume()
helper functions from genpd's "noirq" system PM callbacks. In this
way we make sure to "stop" the device on suspend and to "start" it
on resume.

In cases when a PM domain isn't powered off when genpd's ->prepare()
callback is invoked, genpd runtime resumes and disables runtime PM for the
device. This behaviour was needed when genpd managed intermediate states
during the power off sequence, as to maintain proper low power states of
devices during system PM suspend/resume.
Commit ba2bbfbf63 (PM / Domains: Remove intermediate states from the
power off sequence), enables genpd to improve its behaviour in that
respect.
The PM core disables runtime PM at __device_suspend_late() before it calls
a system PM "late" callback for a device. When resuming a device, after a
corresponding "early" callback has been invoked, the PM core re-enables
runtime PM.
By changing genpd to allow runtime PM according to the same system PM
phases as the PM core, devices can be runtime resumed by their
corresponding subsystem/driver when really needed.
In this way, genpd no longer need to runtime resume the device from its
->prepare() callback. In most cases that avoids unnecessary and energy-
wasting operations of runtime resuming devices that have nothing to do,
only to runtime suspend them shortly after.
Although, because of changing this behaviour in genpd and due to that
genpd powers on the PM domain unconditionally in the system PM resume
"noirq" phase, it could potentially cause a PM domain to stay powered
on even if it's unused after the system has resumed. To avoid this,
schedule a power off work when genpd's system PM ->complete() callback
has been invoked for the last device in the PM domain.

The PM core increases the runtime PM usage count at the system PM prepare
phase. Later when the system resumes, it does a pm_runtime_put() in the
complete phase, which in addition to decrementing the usage count, does
the equivalent of a pm_request_idle().
Therefore the call to pm_request_idle() from within genpd's ->complete()
callback is redundant, so remove it.

Due to the previous changes in genpd, which removed the suspend_power_off
flag, several of the system PM callbacks no longer do any additional
checks but only invoke corresponding pm_generic_* helper functions.
To clean up the code, drop these wrapper functions as they have
become redundant. Instead, assign the system PM callbacks directly
to the pm_generic_*() helper functions.
While changing this, it has bocame clear that some of the current
system PM callbacks in genpd invoke wrong driver callbacks. For
example, the genpd's ->restore() callback invokes pm_generic_resume(),
while that should be pm_generic_restore(). Fix that as well.

If a PM domain is powered off when the first device starts its system PM
prepare phase, genpd prevents any further attempts to power on the PM
domain during the following system PM phases. Not until the system PM
complete phase is finalized for all devices in the PM domain, genpd again
allows it to be powered on.
This behaviour needs to be changed, as a subsystem/driver for a device in
the same PM domain may still need to be able to serve requests in some of
the system PM phases. Accordingly, it may need to runtime resume its
device and thus also request the corresponding PM domain to be powered on.
To deal with these scenarios, let's make the device operational in the
system PM prepare phase by runtime resuming it, no matter if the PM domain
is powered on or off. Changing this also enables us to remove genpd's
suspend_power_off flag, as it's being used to track this condition.
Additionally, we must allow the PM domain to be powered on via runtime PM
during the system PM phases.
This change also requires a fix in the AMD ACP (Audio CoProcessor) drm
driver. It registers a genpd to model the ACP as a PM domain, but
unfortunately it's also abuses genpd's "internal" suspend_power_off flag
to deal with a corner case at system PM resume.
More precisely, the so called SMU block powers on the ACP at system PM
resume, unconditionally if it's being used or not. This may lead to that
genpd's internal status of the power state, may not correctly reflect the
power state of the HW after a system PM resume.
Because of changing the behaviour of genpd, by runtime resuming devices in
the prepare phase, the AMD ACP drm driver no longer have to deal with this
corner case. So let's just drop the related code in this driver.

As a part of the ongoing consolidation of genpd, it's become questionable
whether clients actually needs to be able to assign their own set of
->save|restore_state() callbacks. Currently all users copes fine with the
default callbacks, so let's remove the configuration option and stick to
the default ones.
This enables further clarifications of the related code and let's also
rename pm_genpd_default_save|restore_state() into
__genpd_runtime_suspend|resume() to apply the rule of static functionnames
in genpd.

The genpd governor validates the latency constraints to find out whether
it's acceptable to runtime suspend a device. Earlier this validation was
made to know whether it was okay to invoke the ->stop() callback for the
device, hence the governor used the name "stop_ok" for the related
variables.
To clarify the code around this, let's rename these variables from
"stop_ok" to "suspend_ok".

Commit 30e7a65b3f (PM / Domains: Ensure subdomain is not in use
before removing) added a test to ensure that a subdomain is not a
master to another subdomain or if any devices are using the subdomain
before removing. This change incorrectly used the "slave_links" list to
determine if the subdomain is a master to another subdomain, where it
should have been using the "master_links" list instead. The
"slave_links" list will never be empty for a subdomain and so a
subdomain can never be removed. Fix this by testing if the
"master_links" list is empty instead.

During runtime resume the return values of the start and restore steps
are ignored. As a result drivers are not notified of runtime resume
failures and can't propagate them up. Fix it by returning an error if
either the start or restore step fails, and clean up properly in the
error path.

The slave domains are no longer aligned with the table header in the
/sys/kernel/debug/pm_genpd/pm_genpd_summary output. Worse, the alignment
differs depending on the actual name of the state.
Format the state name and index into a buffer, and print that like
before to restore alignment.
Use "%u" for unsigned int while we're at it.

Some hardware (eg. OMAP), has the ability to enter different low power
modes for a given power domain. This allows for more fine grained control
over the power state of the platform. As a typical example, some registers
of the hardware may be implemented with retention flip-flops and be able
to retain their state at lower voltages allowing for faster on/off
latencies and an increased window of opportunity to enter an intermediate
low power state other than "off"
When trying to set a power domain to off, the genpd governor will choose
the deepest state that will respect the qos constraints of all the devices
and sub-domains on the power domain. The state chosen by the governor is
saved in the "state_idx" field of the generic_pm_domain structure and
shall be used by the power_off and power_on callbacks to perform the
necessary actions to set the power domain into (and out of) the state
indicated by state_idx.
States must be declared in ascending order from shallowest to deepest,
deepest meaning the state which takes longer to enter and exit.
For platforms that don't declare any states, a single a single "off"
state is used. Once all platforms are converted to use the state array,
the legacy on/off latencies will be removed.

The only remaining caller of genpd_poweron() is conditionally compiled
based on CONFIG_PM_GENERIC_DOMAINS_OF, so we get a warning when that is
unset.
By moving the locking/unlocking of the genpd outside genpd_poweron(), thus
to the caller, genpd_poweron() becomes redundant.
Within this context let's then rename the wrapper function,
__genpd_poweron(), to genpd_poweron() as it will then be consistent with
its friend genpd_poweroff().
This change silence the warning about the unused function.

We must preserve the same order of how we acquire and release the lock for
genpd, as otherwise we may encounter deadlocks.
The power on phase of a genpd starts by acquiring its lock. Then it walks
the hierarchy of its parent domains to be able to power on these first, as
per design of genpd.
From a locking perspective this means the locks of the parents becomes
acquired after the lock of the subdomain.
Let's fix pm_genpd_add|remove_subdomain() to maintain the same order of
acquiring/releasing the genpd lock as being applied in the power on/off
sequence.

If a suitable prepare callback cannot be found for a given device and
its driver has no PM callbacks at all, assume that it can go direct to
complete when the system goes to sleep.
The reason for this is that there's lots of devices in a system that do
no PM at all and there's no reason for them to prevent their ancestors
to do direct_complete if they can support it.

Adds a function that sets the pointer to dev_pm_domain in struct device
and that warns if the device has already finished probing. The reason
why we want to enforce that is because in the general case that can
cause problems and also that we can simplify code quite a bit if we can
always assume that.
This patch also changes all current code that directly sets the
dev.pm_domain pointer.

Drivers which can be built as loadable module needs symbols
- pm_genpd_add_device/pm_genpd_remove_device to add/remove devices
to/from genpd. Those drivers create platform devices, which comes
under a powerdomain.

A runtime PM centric subsystem/driver may typically use the runtime PM
helpers, pm_runtime_force_suspend|resume() in the system PM path. This
means the genpd's runtime PM callbacks might be invoked even when runtime
PM has been disabled for the device.
To properly cope with these and similar scenarios when these helper
functions are used, change genpd to skip validating and measuring the
device PM QOS latency.
This is needed because otherwise genpd may prevent the device to be put
into low power state. If this occurs during system PM, it causes the
sequence to be aborted as a device's system PM callback returns -EBUSY.

In preparation for supporting IRQ-safe domains, allocate domain data
outside the domain locks. These functions are not called in an atomic
context, so we can always allocate memory using GFP_KERNEL. By
allocating memory before the locks, we can safely lock the domain using
spinlocks instead of mutexes.

Measure latency does by itself contribute to an increased latency, thus we
should avoid it when it isn't needed.
By merging the latency measurements for the ->save_state() and the
->stop() callbacks, we get one measurement instead of two and we get one
value to store instead of two. Let's also apply the likewise change for
the ->start() and ->restore_state() callbacks.

Measure latency does by itself contribute to an increased latency, thus we
should avoid it when it isn't needed.
Genpd measures latencies in the system PM phase for the ->start|stop()
callbacks and is thus affecting the system PM suspend/resume time.
Moreover these latencies are validated only at runtime PM suspend/resume.
To this reasoning, let's decide to leave these measurements out of the
system PM phase. There should be plenty of occasions during runtime PM to
perform these measurements anyway.

Once genpd could be configured to be built with CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME unset
(nowadays CONFIG_PM), the pm_genpd_poweron() API served a purpose, since
it allowed users to power on a PM domain.
As such configuration no longer is supported, users shall solely rely on
using some of the runtime PM APIs to power on a PM domain.

Commit ba2bbfbf63 ("PM / Domains: Remove intermediate states..") changed
the power off sequence (pm_genpd_poweroff()), which from locking point of
view means the genpd mutex is held throughout the sequence.
The above change means the in_progress counter can't be updated while
pm_genpd_poweroff() is executing, which allows us to remove the counter.
Instead we inform pm_genpd_poweroff() via a bool parameter, to indicate
whether we call it from the scheduled work or from the ->runtime_suspend()
callback, since that all that matters.

The power domains code allows to tie a cpuidle state with a power domain.
Preventing the cpuidle framework to enter a specific idle state by disabling
from the power domain framework is a good idea. Unfortunately, the current
implementation has some gaps with a SMP system and a complex cpuidle
implementation. Enabling a power domain wakes up all the cpus even if a cpu
does not belong to the power domain.
There is some work to do a logical representation with the power domains of
the hardware dependencies (eg. a cpu belongs to a power domains, these power
domains belong to a higher power domain for a cluster, etc ...). A new code
relying on the genpd hierarchy to disable the idle states would make more
sense.
As the unique user of this code has been removed, let's wipe out this code
to prevent new user and to have a clean place to put a new implementation.

The function pm_genpd_remove_subdomain() removes a subdomain from a
generic PM domain, however, it does not check if the subdomain has any
slave domains or device attached before doing so. Therefore, add a test
to verify that the subdomain does not have any slave domains associated
or any device attached before removing.

While powering up a genpd, its domain masters are first being powered up.
In the error path of __pm_genpd_poweron(), we didn't care to try power off
these domain masters. Let's deal with that to avoid leaving unused PM
domains powered.

When a device is probed, the function dev_pm_domain_attach() is called
to see if there is a power-domain that is associated with the device and
needs to be turned on. If dev_pm_domain_attach() does not return
-EPROBE_DEFER then the device will be probed.
For devices using genpd, dev_pm_domain_attach() will call
genpd_dev_pm_attach(). If genpd_dev_pm_attach() does not find a power
domain associated with the device then it returns an error code not
equal to -EPROBE_DEFER to allow the device to be probed. However, if
genpd_dev_pm_attach() does find a power-domain that is associated with
the device, then it does not return -EPROBE_DEFER on failure and hence
the device will still be probed. Furthermore, genpd_dev_pm_attach() does
not check the error code returned by pm_genpd_poweron() to see if the
power-domain was turned on successfully.
Fix this by checking the return code from pm_genpd_poweron() and
returning -EPROBE_DEFER from genpd_dev_pm_attach on failure, if there
is a power-domain associated with the device.

Genpd's ->runtime_suspend() (assigned to pm_genpd_runtime_suspend())
doesn't immediately walk the hierarchy of ->runtime_suspend() callbacks.
Instead, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() calls pm_genpd_poweroff() which
postpones that until *all* the devices in the genpd are runtime suspended.
When pm_genpd_poweroff() discovers that the last device in the genpd is
about to be runtime suspended, it calls __pm_genpd_save_device() for *all*
the devices in the genpd sequentially. Furthermore,
__pm_genpd_save_device() invokes the ->start() callback, walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks and invokes the ->stop()
callback. This causes a "thundering herd" problem.
Let's address this issue by having pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately
walk the hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks, instead of
postponing that to the power off sequence via pm_genpd_poweroff(). If the
selected ->runtime_suspend() callback doesn't return an error code, call
pm_genpd_poweroff() to see if it's feasible to also power off the PM
domain.
Adopting this change enables us to simplify parts of the code in genpd,
for example the locking mechanism. Additionally, it gives some positive
side effects, as described below.
i)
One device's ->runtime_resume() latency is no longer affected by other
devices' latencies in a genpd.
The complexity genpd has to support the option to abort the power off
sequence suffers from latency issues. More precisely, a device that is
requested to be runtime resumed, may end up waiting for
__pm_genpd_save_device() to complete its operations for *another* device.
That's because pm_genpd_poweroff() can't confirm an abort request while it
waits for __pm_genpd_save_device() to return.
As this patch removes the intermediate states in pm_genpd_poweroff() while
powering off the PM domain, we no longer need the ability to abort that
sequence.
ii)
Make pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() reliable when used with genpd.
Until the last device in a genpd becomes idle, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend()
will return 0 without actually walking the hierarchy of the
->runtime_suspend() callbacks. However, by returning 0 the runtime PM core
considers the device as runtime_suspended, so
pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() will return true, even though the device
isn't (yet) runtime suspended.
After this patch, since pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks,
pm_runtime[_status]_suspended() will accurately reflect the status of the
device.
iii)
Enable fine-grained PM through runtime PM callbacks in drivers/subsystems.
There are currently cases were drivers/subsystems implements runtime PM
callbacks to deploy fine-grained PM (e.g. gate clocks, move pinctrl to
power-save state, etc.). While using the genpd, pm_genpd_runtime_suspend()
postpones invoking these callbacks until *all* the devices in the genpd
are runtime suspended. In essence, one runtime resumed device prevents
fine-grained PM for other devices within the same genpd.
After this patch, since pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() immediately walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks, fine-grained PM is enabled
throughout all the levels of runtime PM callbacks.
iiii)
Enable fine-grained PM for IRQ safe devices
Per the definition for an IRQ safe device, its runtime PM callbacks must
be able to execute in atomic context. In the path while genpd walks the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks for the device, it uses a
mutex. Therefore, genpd prevents that path to be executed for IRQ safe
devices.
As this patch changes pm_genpd_runtime_suspend() to immediately walk the
hierarchy of the ->runtime_suspend() callbacks and without needing to use
a mutex, fine-grained PM is enabled throughout all the levels of runtime
PM callbacks for IRQ safe devices.
Unfortunately this patch also comes with a drawback, as described in the
summary below.
Driver's/subsystem's runtime PM callbacks may be invoked even when the
genpd hasn't actually powered off the PM domain, potentially introducing
unnecessary latency.
However, in most cases, saving/restoring register contexts for devices are
typically fast operations or can be optimized in device specific ways
(e.g. shadow copies of register contents in memory, device-specific checks
to see if context has been lost before restoring context, etc.).
Still, in some cases the driver/subsystem may suffer from latency if
runtime PM is used in a very fine-grained manner (e.g. for each IO request
or xfer). To prevent that extra overhead, the driver/subsystem may deploy
the runtime PM autosuspend feature.

If pm_genpd_{add,remove}_device() keeps on failing with -EAGAIN, we end
up with an infinite loop in genpd_dev_pm_{at,de}tach().
This may happen due to a genpd.prepared_count imbalance. This is a bug
elsewhere, but it will result in a system lock up, possibly during
reboot of an otherwise functioning system.
To avoid this, put a limit on the maximum number of loop iterations,
using an exponential back-off mechanism. If the limit is reached, the
operation will just fail. An error message is already printed.

The PM Domain code uses ktime_get() to perform various latency
measurements. However, if ktime_get() is called while timekeeping is
suspended, the following warning is printed:

This happens when resuming the PM Domain that contains the clock events
source, which calls pm_genpd_syscore_poweron(). Chain of operations is:

Fix this by adding a "timed" parameter to genpd_power_{on,off}() and
pm_genpd_sync_power{off,on}(), to indicate whether latency measurements
are allowed. This parameter is passed as false in
genpd_syscore_switch() (i.e. during syscore suspend/resume), and true in
all other cases.

pm_genpd_remove_device() tries hard to validate the generic PM domain
passed to it, but the validation is not complete.
dev->pm_domain contains a struct dev_pm_domain, which is the "base
class" of generic PM domains. Other users of dev_pm_domains include
stuff like vga_switheroo. Hence, a device could have a generic PM
domain or a vga_switcheroo PM domain in dev->pm_domain.
We need ot be certain that the PM domain is actually valid before we
try to remove it. We can do this easily as we have a way to get the
current validated generic PM domain for a struct device. This must
match the generic PM domain being requested for removal.
Convert the code to use this alternative validation method instead.

The PM domain code contains two methods to get the generic PM domain
for a struct device. One is dev_to_genpd() which is only safe when
we know for certain that the device has a generic PM domain attached.
The other is coded into genpd_dev_pm_detach() which ensures that the
PM domain in the struct device is a generic PM domain (and so is safer).
This commit factors out the safer version, documents it, and hides the
unsafe dev_to_genpd().

PM domains are rather noisy; scheduling behaviour can cause callbacks
to take longer, which causes them to spit out a warning-level message
each time a callback takes a little longer than the previous time.
There really isn't a need for this, except when debugging.

Buses which currently supports attaching devices to their PM domains,
will invoke the dev_pm_domain_attach() API from their ->probe()
callbacks. During the attach procedure, genpd power up the PM domain.
In those scenarios where the bus/driver don't need to access its device
during probe, it may leave it in runtime PM suspended state since
that's also the default state. In that way, no notifications through
the runtime PM callbacks will reach the PM domain during probe.
For genpd, the consequence from the above scenario means the PM domain
will remain powered. Therefore, implement the struct dev_pm_domain's
->sync() callback, which is invoked from driver core after the
bus/driver has probed the device. It allows genpd to power off the PM
domain if it's unused.

The optional genpd's ->attach_dev() callback is invoked from
__pm_genpd_add_device(). Let's add error handling from the response
from this callback and propagate the error code.
When __pm_genpd_add_device() is invoked through the generic OF-based PM
domain look-up path, the device is being probed. Returning an error
will mean the device won't be attached to its PM domain. Errors of
-EPROBE_DEFER get special treatment and is propagated to the driver
core.
Therefore this change also enables the ->attach_dev() callback to
be able to request for a deferred probe sequence.

Move the initialization of the struct generic_pm_domain_data into
genpd_alloc_dev_data(), including the assignment of the device's
->pm_domain() callback. Make corresponding changes to
genpd_free_dev_data().
These changes will make the related code more readable. It will also
decrease the critical regions for where genpd's mutex is being held and
for where the device's power related spinlock is being held.

While adding devices to their PM domains, dev_pm_qos_add_notifier() was
invoked while allocating the generic_pm_domain_data for the device.
Since the generic_pm_domain_data's device pointer will be assigned
after allocation, the ->genpd_dev_pm_qos_notifier() callback could be
called prior having a valid pointer to the device. Similar scenario
existed while removing a device from a genpd.
To cope with these scenarios a mutex was used to protect the pointer to
the device.
By re-order the sequence for when dev_pm_qos_add|remove_notifier() are
invoked, we make sure the ->genpd_dev_pm_qos_notifier() callback are
always called with a valid device pointer available.
In this way, we eliminate the need for protecting the pointer and thus
we can remove the mutex from the struct generic_pm_domain_data.

Instead we can now rely on the verification of not allowing existing

When adding a device to a genpd, a struct generic_pm_domain_data is
allocated per device.
Verify that there are no existing generic_pm_domain_data for the device
we are about to add, since that tells us it has already been added to a
genpd.
When genpd supported PM domain device callbacks, this was a valid
scenario. Now it isn't so let's return an error code.

After commit b2b49ccbdd (PM: Kconfig: Set PM_RUNTIME if PM_SLEEP is
selected) PM_RUNTIME is always set if PM is set, so quite a few
depend on CONFIG_PM or even may be dropped entirely in some cases.
Replace CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME with CONFIG_PM in the PM core code.

It's quite common for PM domains to use PM clocks. Typically from SOC
specific code, the per device PM clock list is created and
pm_clk_suspend|resume() are invoked to handle clock gating/ungating.
A step towards consolidation is to integrate PM clock support into
genpd, which is what this patch does.
In this initial step, the calls to the pm_clk_suspend|resume() are
handled within genpd, but the per device PM clock list still needs to
be created from SOC specific code. It seems reasonable to have gendp to
handle that as well, but that left to future patches to address.
It's not every users of genpd that are keen on using PM clocks, thus we
need to provide this a configuration option for genpd. Therefore let's
add flag field in the genpd struct to keep this information and define
a new GENDP_FLAG_PM_CLK bit for it.

Vast amount of platform drivers which enables runtime PM, don't invoke
a pm_runtime_get_sync() while probing their devices.
Instead, once they have turned on their PM resourses during ->probe()
and are ready to handle I/O, these invokes pm_runtime_set_active() to
synchronize its state towards the runtime PM core.
From the runtime PM point of view this behavior is perfectly acceptable,
but we encounter probe failures if their corresponding devices resides
in the generic PM domain. The issues are observed for those devices,
which requires its PM domain to stay powered during ->probe() since
that's not being controlled.
While using the generic OF-based PM domain look-up, a device's PM
domain will be attached during the probe sequence. For this path, let's
fix the probe failures, by simply power on the PM domain right after
when it's been attached to the device.
The generic PM domain stays powered until all of its devices becomes
runtime PM enabled and runtime PM suspended.
The old SOCs which makes use of the generic PM domain but don't use the
generic OF-based PM domain look-up, will not be affected from this
change.

PM domains are powered on/off from various places. Some callers do
latency measurements, others don't. Consolidate using two helper
functions, which always measure the latencies, and update the stored
latencies when needed.
Other minor changes:
- Use pr_warn() instead of pr_warning(),
- There's no need to check genpd->name, %s handles NULL pointers fine,
- Make the warning format strings identical, to save memory.

The initial state of the device's need_restore flag should'nt depend on
the current state of the PM domain. For example it should be perfectly
valid to attach an inactive device to a powered PM domain.
The pm_genpd_dev_need_restore() API allow us to update the need_restore
flag to somewhat cope with such scenarios. Typically that should have
been done from drivers/buses ->probe() since it's those that put the
requirements on the value of the need_restore flag.
Until recently, the Exynos SOCs were the only user of the
pm_genpd_dev_need_restore() API, though invoking it from a centralized
location while adding devices to their PM domains.
Due to that Exynos now have swithed to the generic OF-based PM domain
look-up, it's no longer possible to invoke the API from a centralized
location. The reason is because devices are now added to their PM
domains during the probe sequence.
Commit "ARM: exynos: Move to generic PM domain DT bindings"
did the switch for Exynos to the generic OF-based PM domain look-up,
but it also removed the call to pm_genpd_dev_need_restore(). This
caused a regression for some of the Exynos drivers.
To handle things more properly in the generic PM domain, let's change
the default initial value of the need_restore flag to reflect that the
state is unknown. As soon as some of the runtime PM callbacks gets
invoked, update the initial value accordingly.
Moreover, since the generic PM domain is verifying that all devices
are both runtime PM enabled and suspended, using pm_runtime_suspended()
while pm_genpd_poweroff() is invoked from the scheduled work, we can be
sure of that the PM domain won't be powering off while having active
devices.
Do note that, the generic PM domain can still only know about active
devices which has been activated through invoking its runtime PM resume
callback. In other words, buses/drivers using pm_runtime_set_active()
during ->probe() will still suffer from a race condition, potentially
probing a device without having its PM domain being powered. That issue
will have to be solved using a different approach.
This a log from the boot regression for Exynos5, which is being fixed in
this patch.

Convert the prototypes to return an int in order to support error
handling in these callbacks.
Also, as suggested by Dmitry Torokhov, pass the domain pointer for use
inside the callbacks, and so that they match the existing
power_on/power_off callbacks which currently take the domain pointer.

The "cpu_data" are defined for some archs and thus conflicting with the
"cpu_data" member in the struct gpd_cpu_data. This causes a compiler
error for those archs.
Let's fix it by rename the member to cpuidle_data. In this context it
also seems appropriate to rename the struct to gpd_cpuidle_data to
better reflect its use.

While a PM domain can enable PM runtime management of its devices' module
clocks by setting
genpd->dev_ops.stop = pm_clk_suspend;
genpd->dev_ops.start = pm_clk_resume;
this also requires registering the clocks with the pm_clk subsystem.
In the legacy case, this is handled by the platform code, after
attaching the device to its PM domain.
When the devices are instantiated from DT, devices are attached to their
PM domains by generic code, leaving no method for the platform-specific
PM domain code to register their clocks.
Add two callbacks, allowing a PM domain to perform platform-specific
tasks when a device is attached to or detached from a PM domain.

Add /sys/kernel/debug/pm_genpd/pm_genpd_summary file, which
lists power domains in the system, their statuses and attached devices,
resembling /sys/kernel/debug/clk/clk_summary.
Currently it is impossible to inspect (from userland) whether
a power domain is on or off. And, if it is on, which device blocks it
from powering down. This change allows developers working on
embedded devices power efficiency to list all necessary information
about generic power domains in one place.
The content of pm_genpd/pm_genpd_summary file is generated by iterating
over all generic power domain in the system, and, for each,
over registered devices and over the subdomains, if present.

This patch introduces generic code to perform PM domain look-up using
device tree and automatically bind devices to their PM domains.
Generic device tree bindings are introduced to specify PM domains of
devices in their device tree nodes.
Backwards compatibility with legacy Samsung-specific PM domain bindings
is provided, but for now the new code is not compiled when
CONFIG_ARCH_EXYNOS is selected to avoid collision with legacy code.
This will change as soon as the Exynos PM domain code gets converted to
use the generic framework in further patch.

The genpd dev_irq_safe configuration somewhat overlaps with the runtime
PM pm_runtime_irq_safe() option. Also, currently genpd don't have a
good way to deal with these device. So, until we figured out if and how
to support this in genpd, let's remove the option to configure it.

driver has claimed them. This is useful for debug and development, but

If devices don't provide latency data, this warning can be quite noisy until

None of these files are actually using any __init type directives
and hence don't need to include <linux/init.h>. Most are just a
left over from __devinit and __cpuinit removal, or simply due to
code getting copied from one driver to the next.

The "runtime idle" helper routine, rpm_idle(), currently ignores
return values from .runtime_idle() callbacks executed by it.
However, it turns out that many subsystems use
pm_generic_runtime_idle() which checks the return value of the
driver's callback and executes pm_runtime_suspend() for the device
unless that value is not 0. If that logic is moved to rpm_idle()
instead, pm_generic_runtime_idle() can be dropped and its users
will not need any .runtime_idle() callbacks any more.
Moreover, the PCI, SCSI, and SATA subsystems' .runtime_idle()
routines, pci_pm_runtime_idle(), scsi_runtime_idle(), and
ata_port_runtime_idle(), respectively, as well as a few drivers'
ones may be simplified if rpm_idle() calls rpm_suspend() after 0 has
been returned by the .runtime_idle() callback executed by it.
To reduce overall code bloat, make the changes described above.

When genpd prepares for a system suspend it will fetch a runtime
reference for the device. When returning it we now use the
asyncronous runtime PM API. Thus we don't have to wait for the
device to become idle|suspended before we move on and handle the
next device in queue.

Use the asyncronous runtime PM API when returning the runtime
reference for the device after the system resume is completed.
By using the asyncronous runtime PM API we don't have to wait
for each an every device to become idle|suspended. Instead we
can move on and handle the next device in queue.

Make the generic PM domains pm_genpd_poweroff() function take
device PM QoS flags into account when deciding whether or not to
remove power from the domain.
After this change the routine will return -EBUSY without executing
the domain's .power_off() callback if there is at least one PM QoS
flags request for at least one device in the domain and at least of
those request has at least one of the NO_POWER_OFF and REMOTE_WAKEUP
flags set.

Make it possible to use domain names in operations connecting cpuidle
to and disconnecting it from a PM domain. This is useful on
platforms where PM domain objects are organized in such a way that
the names of the domains are easier to use than the addresses of
those objects.

The names of the cpuidle-related functions in
drivers/base/power/domain.c are inconsistent with the names of the
other exported functions in that file (the "pm_" prefix is missing
from them) and they are missing kerneldoc comments.
Fix that by adding the missing "pm_" prefix to the names of those
functions and add kerneldoc comments documenting them.

It sometimes is necessary to turn on a given PM domain when only
the name of it is known and the domain pointer is not readily
available. For this reason, add a new helper function,
pm_genpd_name_poweron(), allowing the caller to turn on a PM domain
using its name for identification. To avoid code duplication,
move the domain lookup code to a separate function.

Add a new helper function, pm_genpd_add_subdomain_names(), allowing
the caller to add a subdomain to a generic PM domain using names for
domain identification (both domains have to be initialized before).
This function is useful for adding subdomains to PM domains whose
representations are stored in tables, when the caller doesn't know
the indices of the domain to add the subdomain to and of the
subdomain itself, but it knows the domains' names.

Add a new helper function __pm_genpd_name_add_device() allowing
a device to be added to a (registered) generic PM domain identified
by name. Add a wrapper around it, pm_genpd_name_add_device(),
passing NULL as the last argument and reorganize pm_domains.h for the
new functions to be defined consistently with the existing ones.
These functions are useful for adding devices to PM domains whose
representations are stored in tables, when the caller doesn't know
the index of the domain to add the device to, but it knows the
domain's name.

The syscore device PM flag used to mark the devices (belonging to
PM domains) that should never be turned off, except for the system
core (syscore) suspend/hibernation and resume stages, need not be
accessed by the runtime PM core functions, because all of the devices
it is set for need to be marked as "irq safe" anyway and are
protected from being turned off by runtime PM by ensuring that their
usage counters are always set.
For this reason, make the syscore flag system-wide PM-specific
and simplify the code used for manipulating it, because it need not
acquire the device's power.lock any more.

The genpd_start_dev() routine used by pm_genpd_runtime_resume()
to put "irq safe" devices into the full power state measures the
time necessary to "start" the device and updates its PM QoS timing
data if necessary. This may lead to a deadlock if the given device
is a clock source and genpd_start_dev() is invoked from within the
clock source's .enable() routine, which will happen if that routine
uses pm_runtime_get_sync(), for example, to ensure that the device
is operational.
For this reason, introduce a special routine analogous to
genpd_start_dev(), called genpd_start_dev_no_timing(), that doesn't
carry out the time measurement, and make pm_genpd_runtime_resume()
use it instead of genpd_start_dev() to power up "irq safe" devices.

The syscore device PM flag is used to mark the devices (belonging to
a PM domain) that should never be turned off, except for the system
core (syscore) suspend/hibernation and resume stages. That flag is
stored in the device's struct pm_subsys_data object whose address is
available from struct device. However, in some situations it may be
convenient to set that flag before the device is added to a PM
domain, so it is better to move it directly to the "power" member of
struct device. Then, it can be checked by the routines in
drivers/base/power/runtime.c and drivers/base/power/main.c, which is
more straightforward.
This also reduces the number of dev_gpd_data() invocations in the
generic PM domains framework, so the overhead related to the syscore
flag is slightly smaller.

Introduce function pm_genpd_sync_poweron() for restoring domain power
during resume from system suspend and hibernation. It can be much
simpler than pm_genpd_poweron(), because it doesn't have to care
about locking and it can skip many checks done by the latter.
Modify pm_genpd_resume_noirq() and pm_genpd_restore_noirq() to use
the new function.

Make it possible to modify device callbacks used by the generic PM
domains core code at any time, not only after the device has been
added to a domain. This will allow device drivers to provide their
own device PM domain callbacks even if they are registered before
adding the devices to PM domains.
For this purpose, use the observation that the struct
generic_pm_domain_data object containing the relevant callback
pointers may be allocated by pm_genpd_add_callbacks() and the
callbacks may be set before __pm_genpd_add_device() is run for
the given device. This object will then be used by
__pm_genpd_add_device(), but it has to be protected from
premature removal by reference counting.

Add a mechanism for counting references to the
struct generic_pm_domain_data object pointed to by
dev->power.subsys_data->domain_data if the device in question
belongs to a generic PM domain.
This change is necessary for a subsequent patch making it possible to
allocate that object from within pm_genpd_add_callbacks(), so that
drivers can attach their PM domain device callbacks to devices before
those devices are added to PM domains.
This patch has been tested on the SH7372 Mackerel board.

On some systems there are CPU cores located in the same power
domains as I/O devices. Then, power can only be removed from the
domain if all I/O devices in it are not in use and the CPU core
is idle. Add preliminary support for that to the generic PM domains
framework.
First, the platform is expected to provide a cpuidle driver with one
extra state designated for use with the generic PM domains code.
This state should be initially disabled and its exit_latency value
should be set to whatever time is needed to bring up the CPU core
itself after restoring power to it, not including the domain's
power on latency. Its .enter() callback should point to a procedure
that will remove power from the domain containing the CPU core at
the end of the CPU power transition.
The remaining characteristics of the extra cpuidle state, referred to
as the "domain" cpuidle state below, (e.g. power usage, target
residency) should be populated in accordance with the properties of
the hardware.
Next, the platform should execute genpd_attach_cpuidle() on the PM
domain containing the CPU core. That will cause the generic PM
domains framework to treat that domain in a special way such that:
* When all devices in the domain have been suspended and it is about
to be turned off, the states of the devices will be saved, but
power will not be removed from the domain. Instead, the "domain"
cpuidle state will be enabled so that power can be removed from
the domain when the CPU core is idle and the state has been chosen
as the target by the cpuidle governor.
* When the first I/O device in the domain is resumed and
__pm_genpd_poweron(() is called for the first time after
power has been removed from the domain, the "domain" cpuidle
state will be disabled to avoid subsequent surprise power removals
via cpuidle.
The effective exit_latency value of the "domain" cpuidle state
depends on the time needed to bring up the CPU core itself after
restoring power to it as well as on the power on latency of the
domain containing the CPU core. Thus the "domain" cpuidle state's
exit_latency has to be recomputed every time the domain's power on
latency is updated, which may happen every time power is restored
to the domain, if the measured power on latency is greater than
the latency stored in the corresponding generic_pm_domain structure.

While resuming a device belonging to a PM domain,
pm_genpd_runtime_resume() calls __pm_genpd_restore_device() to
restore its state, if necessary. The latter starts the device,
using genpd_start_dev(), restores its state, using
genpd_restore_dev(), and then stops it, using genpd_stop_dev().
However, this last operation is not necessary, because the
device is supposed to be operational after pm_genpd_runtime_resume()
has returned and because of it pm_genpd_runtime_resume() has to
call genpd_start_dev() once again for the "restored" device, which
is inefficient.
To make things more efficient, remove the call to genpd_stop_dev()
from __pm_genpd_restore_device() and the direct call to
genpd_start_dev() from pm_genpd_runtime_resume(). [Of course,
genpd_start_dev() still has to be called by it for devices with the
power.irq_safe flag set, because __pm_genpd_restore_device() is not
executed for them.]
This change has been tested on the SH7372 Mackerel board.

Currently, the default "save state" and "restore state" routines
for generic PM domains, pm_genpd_default_save_state() and
pm_genpd_default_restore_state(), respectively, only use runtime PM
callbacks provided by device drivers, but in general those callbacks
need not provide the entire necessary functionality. Namely, in
general it may be necessary to execute subsystem (i.e. device type,
device class or bus type) callbacks that will carry out all of the
necessary operations.
For this reason, modify pm_genpd_default_save_state() and
pm_genpd_default_restore_state() to execute subsystem callbacks,
if they are provided, and fall back to driver callbacks otherwise.

The generic PM domains core code currently requires domains to be in
the "power on" state for adding devices to them, but this limitation
turns out to be inconvenient in some situations, so remove it.
For this purpose, make __pm_genpd_add_device() set the device's
need_restore flag if the domain is in the "power off" state, so that
the device's "restore state" (usually .runtime_resume()) callback
is executed when it is resumed after the domain has been turned on.
If the domain is in the "power on" state, the device's need_restore
flag will be cleared by __pm_genpd_add_device(), so that its "save
state" (usually .runtime_suspend()) callback is executed when the
domain is about to be turned off. However, since that default
behavior need not be always desirable, add a helper function
pm_genpd_dev_need_restore() allowing a device's need_restore flag
to be set/unset at any time.

Current pm_genpd_add_subdomain() will allow duplicated link between
master and slave domain. This patch fixed it.
Because when current pm_genpd_add_subdomain() checks whether the link
between the master and slave generic PM domain already exists,
slave_links instead of master_links of master domain is used.

The results of the default device stop and domain power off governor
functions for generic PM domains, default_stop_ok() and
default_power_down_ok(), depend only on the timing data of devices,
which are static, and on their PM QoS constraints. Thus, in theory,
these functions only need to carry out their computations, which may
be time consuming in general, when it is known that the PM QoS
constraint of at least one of the devices in question has changed.
Use the PM QoS notifiers of devices to implement that. First,
introduce new fields, constraint_changed and max_off_time_changed,
into struct gpd_timing_data and struct generic_pm_domain,
respectively, and register a PM QoS notifier function when adding
a device into a domain that will set those fields to 'true' whenever
the device's PM QoS constraint is modified. Second, make
default_stop_ok() and default_power_down_ok() use those fields to
decide whether or not to carry out their computations from scratch.
The device and PM domain hierarchies are taken into account in that
and the expense is that the changes of PM QoS constraints of
suspended devices will not be taken into account immediately, which
isn't guaranteed anyway in general.

The removal of a device from a PM domain doesn't have to browse
the domain's device list, because it can check directly if the
device belongs to the given domain. Moreover, it should clear
the domain_data pointer in dev->power.subsys_data, because
dev_pm_put_subsys_data(dev) may not remove dev->power.subsys_data
and the stale domain data pointer may cause problems to happen.
Rework pm_genpd_remove_device() taking the above observations into
account.

After the previous changes in default_stop_ok() and
default_power_down_ok() for PM domains, there are two fields in
struct dev_pm_info that aren't necessary any more, suspend_time
and max_time_suspended_ns.
Remove those fields along with all of the code that accesses them,
which simplifies the runtime PM framework quite a bit.

The existing default domain power down governor function for PM

latency constrait. In particular, make it only take latencies into
account, because it doesn't matter how much time has elapsed since
the domain's devices were suspended for the computation.
Remove the break_even_ns and power_off_time fields from
struct generic_pm_domain, because they are not necessary any more.

computing the parent's one along with its PM QoS constraint).
Remove the break_even_ns field from struct gpd_timing_data, because
it's not used any more.

Power domains that were off before hibernation shouldn't be turned on
during device restore, so prevent that from happening.

The TMU device on the Mackerel board belongs to the A4R power domain
and loses power when the domain is turned off. Unfortunately, the
TMU driver is not prepared to cope with such situations and crashes
the system when that happens. To work around this problem introduce
a new helper function, pm_genpd_dev_always_on(), allowing a device
driver to mark its device as "always on" in case it belongs to a PM
domain, which will make the generic PM domains core code avoid
powering off the domain containing the device, both at run time and
during system suspend.

During resume from hibernation pm_genpd_restore_noirq() should only
power off domains whose suspend_power_off flags are set once and
not every time it is called for a device in the given domain.
Moreover, it shouldn't decrement genpd->suspended_count, because
that field is not touched during device freezing and therefore it is
always equal to 0 when pm_genpd_restore_noirq() runs for the first
device in the given domain.
This means pm_genpd_restore_noirq() may use genpd->suspended_count
to determine whether or not it it has been called for the domain in
question already in this cycle (it only needs to increment that
field every time it runs for this purpose) and whether or not it
should check if the domain needs to be powered off. For that to
work, though, pm_genpd_prepare() has to clear genpd->suspended_count
when it runs for the first device in the given domain (in which case
that flag need not be cleared during domain initialization).

During system suspend pm_genpd_suspend_noirq() checks if the given
device is in a wakeup path (i.e. it appears to be needed for one or
more wakeup devices to work or is a wakeup device itself) and if it
needs to be "active" for wakeup to work. If that is the case, the
function returns 0 without incrementing the device domain's counter
of suspended devices and without executing genpd_stop_dev() for the
device. In consequence, the device is not stopped (e.g. its clock
isn't disabled) and power is always supplied to its domain in the
resulting system sleep state.
However, pm_genpd_resume_noirq() doesn't repeat that check and it
runs genpd_start_dev() and decrements the domain's counter of
suspended devices even for the wakeup device that weren't stopped by
pm_genpd_suspend_noirq(). As a result, the start callback may be run
unnecessarily for them and their domains' counters of suspended
devices may become negative. Both outcomes aren't desirable, so fix
pm_genpd_resume_noirq() to look for wakeup devices that might not be
stopped by during system suspend.

After the introduction of the late/early phases of device
suspend/resume during system-wide power transitions it is possible
to make the generic PM domains code execute its default late/early
device suspend/resume callbacks during those phases instead of the
corresponding _noirq phases. The _noirq device suspend/resume
phases were only used for executing those callbacks, because this
was the only way it could be done, but now we can do better.

A device node pointer is added to generic pm domain structure to associate
the domain with a node in the device tree. The platform code parses the
device tree to find available nodes representing the generic power domain,
instantiates the available domains and initializes them by calling
pm_genpd_init().
Nodes representing the devices include a phandle of the power domain to
which it belongs. As these devices get instantiated, the driver code
checkes for availability of a power domain phandle, converts the phandle
to a device node and uses the new pm_genpd_of_add_device() api to
associate the device with a power domain.
pm_genpd_of_add_device() runs through its list of registered power domains
and matches the OF node of the domain with the one specified as the
parameter. If a match is found, the device is associated with the matched
domain.

Some callback functions defined in drivers/base/power/domain.c are
only necessary if CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is set and they call some other
functions that are only available in that case. For this reason,
they should not be compiled at all when CONFIG_PM_SLEEP is not set.

Commit d23b9b00cd (PM / Domains: Rework
system suspend callback routines (v2)) broke the system suspend and
resume handling by devices belonging to generic PM domains, because
it used freeze/thaw callbacks instead of suspend/resume ones and
didn't initialize device callbacks for system suspend/resume
properly at all. Fix those problems.
