This is the plumbing for supporting fb modifiers on planes. Modifiers
have already been introduced to some extent, but this series will extend
this to allow querying modifiers per plane. Based on this, the client to
enable optimal modifications for framebuffers.
This patch simply allows the DRM drivers to initialize their list of
supported modifiers upon initializing the plane.

This has proven immensely useful for debugging memory leaks and
overallocation (which is a rather serious concern on the platform,
given that we typically run at about 256MB of CMA out of up to 1GB
total memory, with framebuffers that are about 8MB ecah).
The state of the art without this is to dump debug logs from every GL
application, guess as to kernel allocations based on bo_stats, and try
to merge that all together into a global picture of memory allocation
state. With this, you can add a couple of calls to the debug build of
the 3D driver and get a pretty detailed view of GPU memory usage from
/debug/dri/0/bo_stats (or when we debug print to dmesg on allocation
failure).
The Mesa side currently labels at the gallium resource level (so you
see that a 1920x20 pixmap has been created, presumably for the window
system panel), but we could extend that to be even more useful with
glObjectLabel() names being sent all the way down to the kernel.
(partial) example of sorted debugfs output with Mesa labeling all
resources:
kernel BO cache: 16392kb BOs (3)
tiling shadow 1920x1080: 8160kb BOs (1)
resource 1920x1080@32/0: 8160kb BOs (1)
scanout resource 1920x1080@32/0: 8100kb BOs (1)

Fixes: 34c8ea400f ("drm/vc4: Mimic drm_atomic_helper_commit() behavior")
HDMI 1.4b support the CEA video modes as per range of CEA-861-D (VIC 1-64).
For any other mode, the VIC filed in AVI infoframes should be 0.
HDMI 2.0 sinks, support video modes range as per CEA-861-F spec, which is
extended to (VIC 1-107).
This patch adds a bool input variable, which indicates if the connected
sink is a HDMI 2.0 sink or not. This will make sure that we don't pass a
HDMI 2.0 VIC to a HDMI 1.4 sink.
This patch touches all drm drivers, who are callers of this function
drm_hdmi_avi_infoframe_from_display_mode but to make sure there is
no change in current behavior, is_hdmi2 is kept as false.
In case of I915 driver, this patch:
- checks if the connected display is HDMI 2.0.
- HDMI infoframes carry one of this two type of information:
- VIC for 4K modes for HDMI 1.4 sinks
- S3D information for S3D modes
As CEA-861-F has already defined VICs for 4K videomodes, this
patch doesn't allow sending HDMI infoframes for HDMI 2.0 sinks,
until the mode is 3D.

The T tiling format is what V3D uses for textures, with no raster
support at all until later revisions of the hardware (and always at a
large 3D performance penalty). If we can't scan out V3D's format,
then we often need to do a relayout at some stage of the pipeline,
either right before texturing from the scanout buffer (common in X11
without a compositor) or between a tiled screen buffer right before
scanout (an option I've considered in trying to resolve this
inconsistency, but which means needing to use the dirty fb ioctl and
having some update policy).
T-format scanout lets us avoid either of those shadow copies, for a
massive, obvious performance improvement to X11 window dragging
without a compositor. Unfortunately, enabling a compositor to work
around the discrepancy has turned out to be too costly in memory
consumption for the Raspbian distribution.
Because the HVS operates a scanline at a time, compositing from T does
increase the memory bandwidth cost of scanout. On my 1920x1080@32bpp
display on a RPi3, we go from about 15% of system memory bandwidth
with linear to about 20% with tiled. However, for X11 this still ends
up being a huge performance win in active usage.
This patch doesn't yet handle src_x/src_y offsetting within the tiled
buffer. However, we fail to do so for untiled buffers already.

In order to fix it:
- move the 'free(bo_state)' at the end of the function so that it is also
called in the eror handling path. This has the side effect to also try
to free it if the first 'kcalloc' fails. This is harmless.
- add a new label, err_delete_handle, in order to delete already
allocated handles in error handling path

If we restrict this helper to only kms drivers (which is the case) we
can look up the correct mode easily ourselves. But it's a bit tricky:
- All legacy drivers look at crtc->hwmode. But that is updated already
at the beginning of the modeset helper, which means when we disable
a pipe. Hence the final timestamps might be a bit off. But since
this is an existing bug I'm not going to change it, but just try to
be bug-for-bug compatible with the current code. This only applies
to radeon&amdgpu.
- i915 tries to get it perfect by updating crtc->hwmode when the pipe
is off (i.e. vblank->enabled = false).
- All other atomic drivers look at crtc->state->adjusted_mode. Those
that look at state->requested_mode simply don't adjust their mode,
so it's the same. That has two problems: Accessing crtc->state from
interrupt handling code is unsafe, and it's updated before we shut
down the pipe. For nonblocking modesets it's even worse.
For atomic drivers try to implement what i915 does. To do that we add
a new hwmode field to the vblank structure, and update it from
drm_calc_timestamping_constants(). For atomic drivers that's called
from the right spot by the helper library already, so all fine. But
for safety let's enforce that.
For legacy driver this function is only called at the end (oh the
fun), which is broken, so again let's not bother and just stay
bug-for-bug compatible.
The benefit is that we can use drm_calc_vbltimestamp_from_scanoutpos
directly to implement ->get_vblank_timestamp in every driver, deleting
a lot of code.
v2: Completely new approach, trying to mimick the i915 solution.
v3: Fixup kerneldoc.
v4: Drop the WARN_ON to check that the vblank is off, atomic helpers
currently unconditionally call this. Recomputing the same stuff should
be harmless.

There's really no reason for anything more:
- Calling this while the crtc vblank stuff isn't set up is a driver
bug. Those places alrready DRM_ERROR.
- Calling this when the crtc is off is either a driver bug (calling
drm_crtc_handle_vblank at the wrong time) or a core bug (for
anything else). Again, we DRM_ERROR.
- EINVAL is checked at higher levels already, and if we'd use struct
drm_crtc * instead of (dev, pipe) it would be real obvious that
those are again core bugs.
The only valid failure mode is crap hardware that couldn't sample a
useful timestamp, to ask the core to just grab a not-so-accurate
timestamp. Bool is perfectly fine for that.

keep from triggering the hardware addressing bug between the tile
binner and the tile alloc memory (where the top 4 bits come from the
tile state data array's address).
To work around that and allow more memory to be reserved for graphics,
allocate a single BO to store tile state data arrays and tile

one BO doesn't happen to cross a 256MB boundary. With that in place,

Convert drivers to use the new of_graph_get_remote_node() helper
instead of parsing the endpoint node and then getting the remote device
node. Now drivers can just specify the device node and which
port/endpoint and get back the connected remote device node. The details
of the graph binding are nicely abstracted into the core OF graph code.
This changes some error messages to debug messages (in the graph core).
Graph connections are often "no connects" depending on the particular

The HDMI encoder IP embeds all needed blocks to output audio, with a
custom DAI called MAI moving audio between the two parts of the HDMI
core. This driver now exposes a sound card to let users stream audio
to their display.
Using the hdmi-codec driver has been considered here, but MAI meant
having to significantly rework hdmi-codec, and it would have left
little shared code with the I2S mode anyway.
The encoder requires that the audio be SPDIF-formatted frames only,
which alsalib will format-convert for us.
This patch is the combined work of Eric Anholt (initial register setup
with a separate dmaengine driver and using simple-audio-card) and
Boris Brezillon (moving it all into HDMI, massive debug to get it

(in drm_crtc.c, e13161af80
drm: Add drm_crtc_init_with_planes() (v2)), it only checked for "primary"
being non-null. If that was the case, it modified primary->possible_crtcs.
Then, when support for cursor planes was added
(fc1d3e44ef drm: Allow drivers to register
cursor planes with crtc), the same behaviour was implemented for cursor
planes.
vc4_plane_init() since its inception has passed 0xff as "possible_crtcs"
parameter to drm_universal_plane_init(). With a change in drm_crtc.c
(7abc7d4751 drm: don't override
possible_crtcs for primary/cursor planes) passing 0xff results in primary's
possible_crtcs set to 0xff (cursor was updated manually by vc4_crtc.c).
Consequently, it would be allowed to use the primary plane from CRTC 1 (for
example) on CRTC 0, which would result in the overlay and cursors being

The drm_mm range manager claimed to support top-down insertion, but it
was neither searching for the top-most hole that could fit the
allocation request nor fitting the request to the hole correctly.
In order to search the range efficiently, we create a secondary index
for the holes using either their size or their address. This index
allows us to find the smallest hole or the hole at the bottom or top of
the range efficiently, whilst keeping the hole stack to rapidly service
evictions.
v2: Search for holes both high and low. Rename flags to mode.
v3: Discover rb_entry_safe() and use it!
v4: Kerneldoc for enum drm_mm_insert_mode.

Instead of receiving the num_crts as a parameter, we can read it
directly from the mode_config structure. I audited the drivers that
invoke this helper and I believe all of them initialize the mode_config

I used the following coccinelle hack to make this transformation, except
for the function headers and comment updates. The first and second

The DSI0 and DSI1 blocks on the 2835 are related hardware blocks.
Some registers move around, and the featureset is slightly different,
as DSI1 (the 4-lane DSI) is a later version of the hardware block.
This driver doesn't yet enable DSI0, since we don't have any hardware
to test against, but it does put a lot of the register definitions and

HDMI 2.0 recommends that we set the Q bits in the AVI infoframe
even when the sink does not support quantization range selection (QS=0).
According to CEA-861 we can do that as long as the Q we send matches
the default quantization range for the mode.
Previously I think I had misread the spec as saying that you can't
send a non-zero Q at all when QS=0. But that's not what the spec
actually says.

However, in setting up the layout of the kernel side, we failed to

<drm/drm_crtc.h> used to define most of the in-kernel KMS API. It has
now been split into separate files for each object type, but still
includes most other KMS headers to avoid breaking driver compilation.
As a step towards fixing that problem, remove the inclusion of
<drm/drm_encoder.h> from <drm/drm_crtc.h> and include it instead where
appropriate. Also remove the forward declarations of the drm_encoder and
drm_encoder_helper_funcs structures from <drm/drm_crtc.h> as they're not
needed in the header.
<drm/drm_encoder.h> now has to include <drm/drm_mode.h> and contain a
forward declaration of struct drm_encoder in order to allow including it
as the first header in a compilation unit.

This pull request brings in fragment shader threading and ETC1 support
for vc4.
FS threading brings performance improvements of 0-20% in glmark2.
The validation code checks for thread switch signals and ensures that
the registers of the other thread are not touched, and that our clamps
are not live across thread switches. It also checks that the
threading and branching instructions do not interfere.

removing validation the kernel doesn't need to do, and adding the flag
for userspace).

The pm_runtime_put() we were using immediately released power on the
device, which meant that we were generally turning the device off and
on once per frame. In many profiles I've looked at, that added up to
about 1% of CPU time, but this could get worse in the case of frequent
rendering and readback (as may happen in X rendering). By keeping the
device on until we've been idle for a couple of frames, we drop the
overhead of runtime PM down to sub-.1%.
Signed-off-by: Eric Anholt <eric@anholt.net>
The validation for it ends up being quite simple, but I hadn't got
around to it before merging the driver. For backwards compatibility,
we also need to add a flag so that the userspace GL driver can easily
tell if the kernel will allow ETC1 textures (on an old kernel, it will
continue to convert to RGBA8)

The loop is scanning until the original max_ip (size of the BO), but
we want to not examine any code after the PROG_END's delay slots.
There was a block trying to do that, except that we had some early
continue statements if the signal wasn't a PROG_END or a BRANCH.
The failure mode would be that a valid shader is rejected because some
undefined memory after the PROG_END slots is parsed as a branch and
the rest of its setup is illegal. I haven't seen this in the wild,
but valgrind was complaining when about this up in the userland
simulator mode.

drm_atomic_state has a complicated single owner model that tracks the
single reference from allocation through to destruction on another

by using reference counting (at a cost of a few more atomics). This is

convoluted than being passed to a single worker thread for the commit.

Drivers may set the NO_DISABLE_AFTER_MODESET flag in the 'flags' parameter
of the helper drm_atomic_helper_commit_planes() if the relevant display
controllers(e.g., IPUv3 for imx-drm) require to disable a CRTC's planes
when the CRTC is disabled. The helper would skip the ->atomic_disable
call for a plane if the CRTC of the old plane state needs a modesetting
operation. Of course, the drivers need to disable the planes in their CRTC
disable callbacks since no one else would do that.

Overflow memory handling is tricky: While it's still referenced by the
BPO registers, we want to keep it from being freed. When we are
putting a new set of overflow memory in the registers, we need to
assign the old one to the last rendering job using it.
We were looking at "what's currently running in the binner", but since
the bin/render submission split, we may end up with the binner
completing and having no new job while the renderer is still
processing. So, if we don't find a bin job at all, look at the
highest-seqno (last) render job to attach our overflow to.

Userspace needs to know if it can create shaders that do branching.
Otherwise, for backwards compatibility with old kernels it needs to
lower if statements to conditional assignments.
Signed-off-by: Eric Anholt <eric@anholt.net>
We're already checking that branch instructions are between the start
of the shader and the proper PROG_END sequence. The other thing we
need to make branching safe is to verify that the shader doesn't read
past the end of the uniforms stream.
To do that, we require that at any basic block reading uniforms have
the following instructions:
load_imm temp, <next offset within uniform stream>
add unif_addr, temp, unif
The instructions are generated by userspace, and the kernel verifies
that the load_imm is of the expected offset, and that the add adds it
to a uniform. We track which uniform in the stream that is, and at
draw call time fix up the uniform stream to have the address of the
start of the shader's uniforms at that location.

This isn't used yet, it's just a first step toward loop validation.

Reviewed-by: Eric Anholt <eric@anholt.net>
Precise vblank timestamping is implemented via the
usual scanout position based method. On VC4 the
pixelvalves PV do not have a scanout position
register. Only the hardware video scaler HVS has a
similar register which describes which scanline for
the output is currently composited and stored in the
HVS fifo for later consumption by the PV.
This causes a problem in that the HVS runs at a much
faster clock (system clock / audio gate) than the PV
which runs at video mode dot clock, so the unless the
fifo between HVS and PV is full, the HVS will progress
faster in its observable read line position than video
scan rate, so the HVS position reading can't be directly
translated into a scanout position for timestamp correction.
Additionally when the PV is in vblank, it doesn't consume
from the fifo, so the fifo gets full very quickly and then
the HVS stops compositing until the PV enters active scanout
and starts consuming scanlines from the fifo again, making
new space for the HVS to composite.
Therefore a simple translation of HVS read position into
elapsed time since (or to) start of active scanout does
not work, but for the most interesting cases we can still
get useful and sufficiently accurate results:
1. The PV enters active scanout of a new frame with the
fifo of the HVS completely full, and the HVS can refill
any fifo line which gets consumed and thereby freed up by
the PV during active scanout very quickly. Therefore the
PV and HVS work effectively in lock-step during active
scanout with the fifo never having more than 1 scanline
freed up by the PV before it gets refilled. The PV's
real scanout position is therefore trailing the HVS
compositing position as scanoutpos = hvspos - fifosize
and we can get the true scanoutpos as HVS readpos minus
fifo size, so precise timestamping works while in active
scanout, except for the last few scanlines of the frame,
when the HVS reaches end of frame, stops compositing and
the PV catches up and drains the fifo. This special case
would only introduce minor errors though.
2. If we are in vblank, then we can only guess something
reasonable. If called from vblank irq, we assume the irq is
usually dispatched with minimum delay, so we can take a
timestamp taken at entry into the vblank irq handler as a
baseline and then add a full vblank duration until the
guessed start of active scanout. As irq dispatch is usually
pretty low latency this works with relatively low jitter and
good results.
If we aren't called from vblank then we could be anywhere
within the vblank interval, so we return a neutral result,
simply the current system timestamp, and hope for the best.
Measurement shows the generated timestamps to be rather precise,
and at least never off more than 1 vblank duration worst-case.
Limitations: Doesn't work well yet for interlaced video modes,
therefore disabled in interlaced mode for now.
