Some platforms are incapable of triggering on level interrupts. Add a
platform quirks member in the platform data structure, as well as an
edge interrupt quirk which can be set on such platforms.
When the interrupt is requested with IRQF_TRIGGER_RISING, IRQF_ONESHOT
cannot be used, as we might miss interrupts that occur after the FW
status is cleared and before the threaded interrupt handler exits.
Moreover, when IRQF_ONESHOT is not set, iterating more than once in the
threaded interrupt handler introduces a few race conditions between this
handler and the hardirq handler. Currently this is worked around by
limiting the loop to one iteration only. This workaround has an impact
on performance. To remove to this restriction, the race conditions will
need to be addressed.

The total number of TX memory blocks may change when the dynamic memory
option is enabled. The current implementation only tracks the available
memory blocks, which over-complicates TX blocks accounting.
By tracking the number of allocated blocks, calculation of the number of
available blocks becomes simpler and cleaner. It simply equals the total
number of TX memory blocks minus the allocated ones.
Also, remove some unnecessary castings and use union member accesses

The current implementation allocates a skb each time one is requested by
the firmware. Since dummy packets are handled differently than regular
packets, the skb needs to be marked. Currently, this is done by
setting the pkt_type member to 5. This might not be safe, as we cannot
be sure that there won't be any other packets with this pkt_type value.
Since the packet does not change from one request to another, we can
simply allocate a dummy packet template and always send it. All changes
to the skb done during packet preparation must be reverted, so the same
skb can be reused.
The dummy packets are not transmitted, therefore there's no need to set
the BSSID or our own MAC address.
In addition, the header portion of the packet was zeroed by mistake, so
fix that as well.

The wl12xx device normally drops all frames coming from BSSID
it is not joined with.
This behavior is configured today by the wl12xx driver in response
to a handful of ieee80211_bss_change and ieee80211_conf_changed
notification flags, such as BSS_CHANGED_ASSOC, BSS_CHANGED_BSSID,
IEEE80211_CONF_CHANGE_IDLE, etc..
This breaks when we roam to a new BSSID, where authentication frames
are sent before any BSS_CHANGED/CONF_CHANGED flags are received.
When this happens the hardware silently drops the authentication
responses, and the roaming fails.
Ideally this aggressive filtering behavior of the device should be disabled
upon a notification from mac80211. Such notification will take place
after multi-channel support will be added: mac80211 will likely send a
remain-on-channel notification to drivers when entering sensitive
states (like authentication), otherwise the firmware might jump to
different channels (to serve a different role).
Until those notifications materialize, disable the hw BSSID filter
when authentication requests are sent, so roaming would work.

ELP (Extremely/Enhanced Low Power, or something like that ;)) refers to
the powerstate of the 12xx chip, in which very low power is consumed,
and no commands (from the host) can be issued until the chip is woken up.
Wakeup/sleep commands must be protected by a wl->mutex, so it's generally
a good idea to call wakeup/sleep along with the mutex lock/unlock (where
needed). However, in some places the wl12xx driver calls wakeup/sleep in
some "inner" functions. This result in some "nested" wakeup/sleep calls

The interrupt of the wl12xx is a level interrupt in nature, since the
interrupt line is not auto-reset. However, since resetting the interrupt
requires bus transactions, this cannot be done from an interrupt
context. Thus, requesting a level interrupt would require to disable the
irq and re-enable it after the HW is acknowledged. Since we now request
a threaded irq, this can also be done by specifying the IRQF_ONESHOT
flag.
Triggering on an edge can be problematic in some platforms, if the
sampling frequency is not sufficient for detecting very frequent
interrupts. In case an interrupt is missed, the driver will hang as the
interrupt line will stay high until it is acknowledged by the driver,
which will never happen.

To achieve maximal throughput, it is very important to react to
interrupts as soon as possible. Currently the interrupt handler wakes up
a worker for handling interrupts in process context. A cleaner and more
efficient design would be to request a threaded interrupt handler. This
handler's priority is very high, and can do blocking operations such as
SDIO/SPI transactions.
Some work can be deferred, mostly calls to mac80211 APIs
(ieee80211_rx_ni and ieee80211_tx_status). By deferring such work to a
different worker, we can keep the irq handler thread more I/O
responsive. In addition, on multi-core systems the two threads can be
scheduled on different cores, which will improve overall performance.
The use of WL1271_FLAG_IRQ_PENDING & WL1271_FLAG_IRQ_RUNNING was
changed. For simplicity, always query the FW for more pending
interrupts. Since there are relatively long bursts of interrupts, the
extra FW status read overhead is negligible. In addition, this enables
registering the IRQ handler with the ONESHOT option.

Check the conditions for the high/low TX queue watermarks when the
spin-lock is taken. This prevents race conditions as tx_queue_count and
the flag checked are only modified when the spin-lock is taken.
The following race was in mind:
- Queues are almost full and wl1271_op_tx() will stop the queues, but it
doesn't get the spin-lock yet.
- (on another CPU) tx_work_locked() dequeues 15 skbs from this queue and
tx_queue_count is updated to reflect this
- wl1271_op_tx() does not check tx_queue_count after taking the
spin-lock and incorrectly stops the queue.

The passive scan channel dwell time currently used is 30-60TU. A typical
beacon interval for AP's is 100TU. This leads to a ~30% worst-case probability
of finding an AP via passive scanning.
For 5GHz bands for DFS frequencies passive scanning is the only scanning
option. Hence for these, the probability of finding an AP is very low.
To fix this, increase the passive channel scan dwell times (also the early
leave value, as 5GHz channels are still typically very silent.) Use a value
of 100TU, because that covers most typical AP configurations.
Based on testing the probability of finding an AP (100TU beacon interval) on
a single scan round are as follows (based on 100 iterations):
dwell min/max (TU) | probability
---------------------+------------
30/60 | 35%
60/60 | 56%
80/80 | 77%
100/100 | 100%

Extend channel to frequency mapping for 802.11j Japan 4.9GHz band, according to
IEEE802.11 section 17.3.8.3.2 and Annex J. Because there are now overlapping
channel numbers in the 2GHz and 5GHz band we can't map from channel to
frequency without knowing the band. This is no problem as in most contexts we
know the band. In places where we don't know the band (and WEXT compatibility)
we assume the 2GHz band for channels below 14.
This patch does not implement all channel to frequency mappings defined in

const). This method has the advantage of compiling only the relevant
messages, while optimizing out the unused ones.
In order to allow runtime control over the debug_level, while optimizing
out messages when debug messages are not needed, we combine some methods:
1. use dynamic_debug (pr_debug) rather then printk.
2. add debug_level module param in order to set debug level during insmod.
3. add debug_level sysfs file in order to allow dynamic control over the

Disabling the 11a channels when not supported in the reg_notify function was

The probe-request template used in the hardware connection monitoring feature
thus far has been an empty one, without the SSID IE and without supported rate
IEs. This causes problems with some AP's.
Additionally, after connected scans, the template for connection maintenance

Fix these by getting a pre-filled directed probe-request template for the

drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/debug.c as per David
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make
nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a
.llseek pointer.
The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek
and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that
the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains
the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek.
New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek
and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted
to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code
relies on calling seek on the device file.
The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains
comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was
chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will
be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not
seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle.
Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get
the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window.
Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic
patch that does all this.

easier to develop wl1271 features move wl1251 to it's own directory,

There are no functional changes, only moving of files. One regression
is that Kconfig won't be updated automatically and user needs to enable

The hardware recovery code creates a scenario in which it is possible for a

Currently then dwell times for each channel in scans is set to an overly
long value, and excessive number of probe-requests are transmitted on each
channel (for active scans.)
Based on testing, comparable results can be received with smaller dwell-time,
and, with fever probe-requests - in fact, reducing the number of probe-requests
to 2 seems to increase the number of found results.
Configure more optimal values for per channel dwell times. Comparison for the
different scan configurations (in my current office environment):
dwell-time 60000 3x probe-req == ~60 results
40000 3x probe-req == ~50 results
30000 3x probe-req == ~40 results
dwell-time 60000 2x probe-req == ~70 results
40000 2x probe-req == ~60 results
30000 2x probe-req == ~58 results
The above are results for a cumulative 3 scan run. For individual scans, the
number of results drop slightly more.

In the scan state machine, the wl1271_mutex is unlocked first then relocked,
and then the scan state variables are modified.
This makes it possible for ieee80211_scan_complete to be called twice in some
scenarios, as the scan completion event from the firmware may be processed
while the mutex is unlocked.
To fix the issue, move the ieee80211_scan_complete call last in the function.
This is generally safer, but there still may be issues is functions calling
the scan state machine rely on states checked before the unlocking of the
global mutex.

The wireless driver infrastructure and some of the drivers

All these files use debugfs and they typically rely

This patch is a complete rewrite of the scanning code. It now includes a
state machine to scan all four possible sets of channels independently:
2.4GHz active, 2.4GHz passive, 5GHz active and 5GHz passive. The wl1271
firmware doesn't allow these sets to be mixed, so up to several scan commands
have to be issued. This patch also allows scanning more than 24 channels per
set, by breaking the sets into smaller parts if needed (the firmware can scan
a maximum of 24 channels at a time).
Previously, the scanning code was erroneously scanning all channels possible
actively, not complying with the CRDA values. This is also fixed with this

This patch requests mac80211 to disable dynamic PSM based on sense events
coming from the firmware. Effectively, whenever there is bluetooth traffic,
the mac80211 is forced into full PSM mode.

We should read the fem manufacturer value from the NVS, so we can modify it
easily and use a consistent value throughout the configuration. Previously
we had to set the FEM value in the NVS and in the driver's initialization
parameters. This patch removes the latter.

Some AP's (such as Zyxel Prestige 600) have totally broken ps-poll
functionality. When powersave is enabled, these AP's will set the TIM bit for
a STA in beacons, but when the STA responds with a ps-poll, the AP does not
respond with data.
The wl1271 firmware is able to send an indication to the host, when this
problem occurs. This patch adds implementation, which temporarily disables
power-save in response to this indication, allowing the AP to transmit whatever
data it has buffered for the STA / whatever data is inbound at that time.
This patch does not make these AP's work reliably in PSM, but improves the
chances of inbound data getting through.
The side effect of this patch is increased power consumption when using a
faulty AP.

This patch removes the calibration performed on the first join command. The
reasoning is that this is unnecessary as devices get their calibration data
via the NVS file, and because the commands break BT coexistence.
This is actually safe, because of the implementation the calibration
was executed on the first JOIN anyway, after an ifdown/ifup the devices have
relied on the NVS for calibration anyway (== most of the time.)

Reading the ELP_CTRL register with sdio_readb causes problems because
hardware seems to be performing a write using stuff bits in the request
(those bits contain write data in write request). This indicates that it
actually expects RAW (read after write) type of request, so perform that
when reading ELP_CTRL instead. Also cache last written value so we know
what to write when doing RAW request.
Because of the above it was not possible to wake the chip from ELP power
saving mode, PM had to be disabled to have the driver usable in SDIO
mode. After this patch PM is functional.
For backporting to 2.6.34 or earlier, this patch depends on
6c1f716e81, which adds the
required SDIO funcion.
