This bug reports mentions 6d4f5440 ("HID: multitouch: Fetch feature

commit actually masked 2 firmware bugs that are annihilating each other:
The report descriptor declares two features in reports 3 and 5:

The report ID 3 presents 2 input mode features, while only the first one
is handled by the device. Given that we did not checked if one was
previously assigned, we were dealing with the ignored featured and we
should never have been able to switch this panel into the multitouch mode.
However, the firmware presents an other bugs which allowed 6d4f5440
to counteract the faulty report descriptor. When we request the values
of the feature 5, the firmware answers "03 03 00". The fields are correct
but the report id is wrong. Before 6d4f5440, we retrieved all the features
and injected them in the system. So when we called report 5, we injected
in the system the report 3 with the values "03 00".
Setting the second input mode to 03 in this report changed it to "03 03"
and the touchpad switched to the mt mode. We could have set anything
in the second field because the actual value (the first 03 in this report)
was given by the query of report ID 5.
To sum up: 2 bugs in the firmware were hiding that we were accessing the
wrong feature.

The critical section protected by usbhid->lock in hid_ctrl() is too
big and because of this it causes a recursive deadlock. "Too big" means
the case statement and the call to hid_input_report() do not need to be
protected by the spinlock (no URB operations are done inside them).
The deadlock happens because in certain rare cases drivers try to grab
the lock while handling the ctrl irq which grabs the lock before them
as described above. For example newer wacom tablets like 056a:033c try
to reschedule proximity reads from wacom_intuos_schedule_prox_event()
calling hid_hw_request() -> usbhid_request() -> usbhid_submit_report()
which tries to grab the usbhid lock already held by hid_ctrl().
There are two ways to get out of this deadlock:
1. Make the drivers work "around" the ctrl critical region, in the
wacom case for ex. by delaying the scheduling of the proximity read
request itself to a workqueue.
2. Shrink the critical region so the usbhid lock protects only the
instructions which modify usbhid state, calling hid_input_report()
with the spinlock unlocked, allowing the device driver to grab the
lock first, finish and then grab the lock afterwards in hid_ctrl().
This patch implements the 2nd solution.

The code in hid_debug_event() causes horrible code generation. First,
we do a strlen() call for every byte we copy (we're doing a store to
global memory, so gcc has no way of proving that strlen(buf) doesn't
change). Second, since both i, list->tail and HID_DEBUG_BUFSIZE have
signed type, the modulo computation has to take into account the
possibility that list->tail+i is negative, so it's not just a simple
and.
Fix the former by simply not doing strlen() at all (we have to load
buf[i] anyway, so testing it is almost free) and the latter by
changing i to unsigned. This cuts 29% (69 bytes) of the size of the
function.

This patch adds basic support for the Logitech G920 wheel when in HID
mode. This wheel 'speaks' the HID++ protocol, and therefor is driven
with hid-logitech-hidpp.
At this stage the driver only shows that it can communicate with the
wheel by outputting the name discovered over HID++.
The normal HID functions work to give input functionality using
joystick/event interface.
Note: in 'hidpp_probe()' we have to start the hardware to get packets
flowing, the same might apply in future for other devices which don't

On hardware which provides standby power for charging devices the state of the
LEDs and force-feedback on controllers can persist even when the system is in
standby. Additionally, the state of the controllers on resume may be different
from the state they were in at the time when they were suspended (ie. LEDs are
cleared on resume).
This implements the suspend and resume callbacks which saves and clears the
state of the LEDs on suspend and restores them on resume. Force-feedback is
stopped on suspend but not automatically restored on resume until a new event is
received to avoid potentially damaging hardware.

The name .dev in a struct is normally reserved for a struct device
that is let us say a superclass to the thing described by the struct.
struct gpio_chip stands out by confusingly using a struct device *dev
to point to the parent device (such as a platform_device) that
represents the hardware. As we want to give gpio_chip:s real devices,
this is not working. We need to rename this member to parent.
This was done by two coccinelle scripts, I guess it is possible to
combine them into one, but I don't know such stuff. They look like
this:
@@
struct gpio_chip *var;
@@
-var->dev
+var->parent
and:
@@
struct gpio_chip var;
@@
-var.dev
+var.parent
and:
@@
struct bgpio_chip *var;
@@
-var->gc.dev
+var->gc.parent
Plus a few instances of bgpio that I couldn't figure out how
to teach Coccinelle to rewrite.
This patch hits all over the place, but I *strongly* prefer this
solution to any piecemal approaches that just exercise patch
mechanics all over the place. It mainly hits drivers/gpio and
drivers/pinctrl which is my own backyard anyway.

When connecting the Cintiq Companion 2 as an external tablet (i.e., using
it in "hybrid" mode) it has been seen to cause the kernel of the machine
it is connected to to Oops. The cause has been traced to us attempting to
switch the tablet's mode prior to actually starting HID device (resulting
in the eventual dereference of the uninitialized control URB).
Commit 3b164a0 moved the mode switch from occuring post-start to occurring
pre-start. The change was not seen to cause issues largely due to the fact
that most devices mode switch with 'hid_hw_raw_request' (which is safe to
call prior to start) rather than 'hid_hw_request'.
Moving the call back to its original location resolves the issue, but
causes some touch-only Bamboo tablets (e.g. 056a:00d0) to stop working.
The affected tablets require us to perform a mode switch on their
vestigial pen interface prior ignoring with -ENODEV, meaning that the
code which is responsible for doing the ignoring has to move as well.

When introduced in commit 1b5d514, the check 'if (hid_data->cc_index >= 0)'
in 'wacom_wac_finger_pre_report' was intended to switch where the driver
got the expected number of contacts from: HID_DG_CONTACTCOUNT if the usage
was present, or 'touch_max' otherwise. Unfortunately, an oversight worthy
of a brown paper bag (specifically, that 'cc_index' could never be negative)
meant that the latter 'else' clause would never be entered.
The patch prior to this one introduced a way for 'cc_index' to be negative,
but only if HID_DG_CONTACTCOUNT is present in some report _other_ than the
one being processed. To ensure the 'else' clause is also entered for devices
which don't have HID_DG_CONTACTCOUNT on _any_ report, we add the additional
constraint that 'cc_report' be non-zero (which is true only if the usage is

reports with a HID_DG_CONTACTCOUNT usage, its possible that the values
will not be correct for the report we're handling, resulting in an
incorrect value for 'num_expected'. This has been observed with the Cintiq
Companion 2.
To address this, we store the ID of the report those indicies are valid
for in a new 'cc_report' variable. Before using them to get the expected
contact count, we first check if the ID of the report we're processing
matches 'cc_report'. If it doesn't, we update the indicies to point to
the HID_DG_CONTACTCOUNT usage of the current report (if it has one).

it eventually pulls the whole I2C bus low:

Fix this by preventing initial feature report retrieval for Win8 devices.

There is an error in the report descriptor of the Thinkpad Helix 2 where
logical minimum value (557376) is greater than logical maximum (491200)
for all of the magnetic flux axis data fields. This error results in a
report descriptor parsing failure that causes the sensors attached to the
hub not to be detected.
dmesg excerpt:

Unlike other IRQ functions, 'wacom_pl_irq' uses the second element of
the 'tool' array to store information about its single pen. This makes
the function more difficult to understand (since it doesn't follow the
general pattern of other IRQ functions) and prevents the possibility of
refactoring how pen state is stored.
This patch rewrites 'wacom_pl_irq' to follow the usual IRQ conventions,
including storing tool type in 'tool[0]' and implicitly tracking prox
with the 'id[0]' variable.

HID: wacom: Report correct device resolution when using the wireless adapater
HID: hid-input: Fix accessing freed memory during device disconnect
HID: uclogic: fix limit in uclogic_tablet_enable()
The 'wacom_wireless_work' function does not recalculate the tablet's
resolution, causing the value contained in the 'features' struct to
always be reported to userspace. This value is valid only for the pen
interface, meaning that the value will be incorrect for the touchpad (if
present). This in particular causes problems for libinput which relies
on the reported resolution being correct.
This patch adds the necessary calls to recalculate the resolution for
each interface. This requires a little bit of code shuffling since both
the 'wacom_set_default_phy' and 'wacom_calculate_res' are declared below
their new first point of use in 'wacom_wireless_work'.

During unbinding the driver was dereferencing a pointer to memory
already freed by power_supply_unregister().
Driver was freeing its internal description of battery through pointers
stored in power_supply structure. However, because the core owns the
power supply instance, after calling power_supply_unregister() this
memory is freed and the driver cannot access these members.
Fix this by storing the pointer to internal description of battery in a
local variable before calling power_supply_unregister(), so the pointer
remains valid.

WACOM_QUIRK_NO_INPUT is a signal to the driver that input devices
should not be created for a particular device. This quirk was used by
the wireless receiver to prevent any devices from being created during
the initial probe (defering it instead until we got a tablet connection
event in 'wacom_wireless_work').
This quirk is not necessary now that a device_type is associated with each
device. Any input device allocated by 'wacom_allocate_inputs' which is
not necessary for a particular device is freed in 'wacom_register_inputs'.
In particular, none of the wireless receivers devices have the pen, pad,
or touch device types set so the same effect is achieved without the need
to be explicit.
We now return early in wacom_retrieve_hid_descriptor for wireless devices
(to prevent the device_type from being overridden) but since we ignore the
HID descriptor for the wireless reciever anyway, this is not an issue.

20.83 Hz which many userspace utilities mistook as a sign of a bad signal.
Since a 'B' and an '8' can look similar it's possible that someone mistook the
one for another. The new value of '0x80' enables the full 1000 Hz peak

The reports sent from some touch devices (e.g. the Cintiq 24HDT) contain
junk data in the contact slots which follow the final "valid" contact.
To avoid forwarding it to usrspace, we store the reported contact count
during the pre-process phase and then only process that many contacts.

process the finger data without first knowing the "contact count" at the
very end of the report (e.g. the Cintiq 24HDT touch screen, when forced

Since the HID subsystem doesn't provide a way to take action before 'event'

A firmware bug in some touchpads causes the F01 interrupt enable register
to be cleared on reset. This register controls which RMI functions generate
interrupts and when it is cleared, the touchpad stops reporting all data.
This patch looks for the cleared F01 control register and writes the
correct value based on interrupt mask computed while scanning the PDT.

Allocated input devices should not use the 'pen_name' by default since
we do not know at that point in time if that is an appropriate choice
of name. Instead, use the (tool-agnostic) name that is stored in the
device's 'wacom_features' structure. This also has the nice side-effect
of requring us to be explicit about the naming of the pen device, as
we already are for touch and pad devices.

The 'wacom_allocate_inputs' function tries to allocate three input devices: one
each for the pen, touch, and pad. The pointers that are returned by the
'wacom_allocate_input' calls are temporarily stored to local variables where
they are checked to ensure they're non-null before storing them in the
'wacom_wac' structure. If an allocation fails, the 'wacom_free_inputs'
function is called to reclaim the memory. Unfortunately, 'wacom_free_inputs' is
called prior to the pointers being copied, so it is not actually able to free
anything.
This patch has the calls to 'wacom_allocate_input' store the pointer directly
in the 'wacom_wac' structure where they can be freed. Also, it replaces the
call to 'wacom_free_inputs' with the (more general) 'wacom_clean_inputs' and
removes the no-longer-used function.

cp2112_i2c_xfer() only supports a single i2c_msg. More than
one message at a time just returns EIO. This breaks certain
important cases. For example, the at24 eeprom driver generates
paired write and read messages (for eeprom address and data).
Since the device doesn't support i2c repeated starts in general,
but does support a single write-repeated-start-read pair
(since hardware rev 1), we recognize the latter case and
implement only that.

i2c-hid takes care of requesting and handling IRQs for HID devices
which in turns might expect them to be always active when working
in normal conditions. Hence, disabling IRQs before calling the suspend

Fix this by disabling IRQs only after the suspend callbacks had been

Historically, both the touch and pad tools would have shared the
'BTN_TOOL_FINGER' type. Any time you needed to distinguish the two, you
had to use some other bit of knowledge (e.g. that the pad was on the same
interface as the pen, and thus 'touch_max' would be zero).
To make these checks more readable, we introduce WACOM_DEVICETYPE_PAD.
Although we still have to rely on other bits of knowledge to set this
bit on the right interface (since it cannot be detected from the HID
descriptor), it can be done just once inside 'wacom_setup_device_quirks'.

The USB devices that this driver has historically supported segregate the
pen and touch portions of the tablet. Oftentimes the segregation would be
done at the interface level, though on occasion (e.g. Cintiq 24HDT) the
tablet would combine two totally independent USB devices behind an internal
USB hub. Because pen and touch never shared the same interface, it made
sense for the 'device_type' to store a single value: "pen" or "touch".
Recently, however, some I2C devices have been created which combine the
two. A first step to accomodating this is to expand 'device_type' so that
it can represent two (or potentially more) types simultaneously. To do
this, we treat it as a bitfield and set/check individual bits rather
than using the '=' and '==' operators.
This should not result in any functional change since no supported devices
(that I'm aware of, at least) have HID descriptors that indicate both
pen and touch reports on a single interface.

The Logitech M560 is a wireless mouse designed for windows 8 which uses
the unifying receiver.
Compared to a standard one, some buttons (the middle one and the
two ones placed on the side) are bound to a key combination
instead of a generating classic "mouse" button events.
The device shows up as a mouse and keyboard combination: when the middle
button is pressed it sends a key (as keyboard) combination, the same
happens for the two side button. The left/right/wheel work as expected
from a mouse. To complicate things further, the middle button sends
different keys combinations between odd and even presses.
In the "even" press it also sends a left click. But the worst thing
is that no event is generated when the middle button is released.
It is possible to re-configure the mouse sending a command (see function
m560_send_config_command()). After this command the mouse sends some
useful data when the buttons are pressed and/or released.

This reverts commit 3a61e97563.
The Logitech TK820 seems to be affected by a firmware bug which
delays the sending of the keys (pressed, or released, which triggers
a key-repeat) while holding fingers on the touch sensor.
This behavior can be observed while using the mouse emulation mode
if the user moves the finger while typing (highly improbable though).
Holding the finger still while in the mouse emulation mode does
not trigger the key repeat problem.
So better keep things in their previous state to not have to
explain users that the new key-repeat bug they see is a "feature".
Furthermore, I noticed that I disabled the media keys whith
this patch. Sorry, my bad.
I think it is best to revert the patch, in all the current
versions it has been shipped.

This allows for the removal of a redundant "x = x" copy loop in

The last patch was careful to maintain backwards-compatible behavior
by forcing device_type to BTN_TOOL_PEN (and printing a warning) if it
were still uninitialized after scanning the HID descriptor and applying
quirks. We should be more strict with HID_GENERIC devices, however,
since there is no a priori guarantee that it is a tablet or touchpad.
If the device_type is still uninitialized for a HID_GENERIC device then
we assume that it isn't something the driver can work with and so fail
the probe.

Currently, we assume a device_type of BTN_TOOL_PEN before scanning the
HID descriptor and then change the device_type if what we discover
proves that assumption wrong. This way of doing things makes it more
difficult to figure out if a device (particularly a HID_GENERIC device)
actually does tablet/touch input or is something completley different.
This patch leaves device_type at its initial value of 0 and then calls
'wacom_parse_hid' for every device (not just those that have touch).
As we map the usages, we can set the device_type as before. After we're
finished, we can then check if the value is still zero and do whatever
is most appropriate.
Detecting the pen can be a little tricky on most Wacom devices because
the descriptors describe opaque blobs. Fortunately, older Wacom tablets
have the HID_DG_DIGITIZER usage on the pen's application collection and
newer tablets seem to have a similar vendor-defined usage that we can
trigger on.

HID Sensor Spec defines two usage ids for custom sensors
HID_USAGE_SENSOR_TYPE_OTHER_CUSTOM (0x09, 0xE1)
HID_USAGE_SENSOR_TYPE_OTHER_GENERIC(0x09, 0xE2)
In addition the standard also defines usage ids for custom fields.
The purpose of these sensors is to extend the functionality or provide a way to
obfuscate the data being communicated by a sensor. Without knowing the mapping
between the data and its encapsulated form, it is difficult for an driver to
determine what data is being communicated by the sensor. This allows some
differentiating use cases, where vendor can provide applications. Since these
can't be represented by standard sensor interfaces like IIO, we present these
as fields with
- type (input/output)
- units
- min/max
- get/set value
In addition an dev interface to transfer report events. Details about this
interface is described in /Documentation/hid/hid-sensor.txt. Manufacturers
should not use these ids for any standard sensors, otherwise the the
product/vendor id can be added to black list.

486b908 (HID: wacom: do not send pen events before touch is up/forced out)

wacom->shared is null for these devices so this leads to a null pointer
exception.
Change the condition to make it clear that what we need is wacom->shared
not NULL.

If noone listens to the input device when a tool comes in proximity,
the tablet does not send the in-prox event when a client becomes available.
That means that no events will be sent until the tool is taken out of
proximity.
In this situation, ask for the report WACOM_REPORT_INTUOSREAD which will
read the corresponding feature and generate an in-prox event.
To make some generation of hardware working, we need to unset the
quirk NO_GET set by hid-core because the interfaces are seen as "boot
mouse".
We don't schedule this read in a worker while we are in an IO interrupt.
We know that usbhid will do it asynchronously. If this is triggered by
uhid, then this is obviously a client side bug :)

For defining enumeration values like report or power status events, the
enumeration usage ids are enclosed in a logical collection. In this case we
need to match logical usage id for pending read on this usage id. For example,
in the below field, when read is requested for 0319, the report will
contain one of the status usages like 850, 851 etc. In this case the raw
event will not match 0319. So when logical collection matches, then wake
up the pending thread.

The PID driver (usbhid/hid-pidff.c) does not set the effect ID when
uploading an effect. The result is that the initial upload works but
subsequent uploads to modify effect parameters are all directed at the
last-created effect.
The targeted effect ID must be passed back to the device when effect
parameters are changed. This is done at the start of
"pidff_set_condition_report", "pidff_set_periodic_report" etc. based on
the value of "pidff->block_load[PID_EFFECT_
BLOCK_INDEX].value[0]".
This value is only ever set during pidff_request_effect_upload.
The result is stored in "pidff->pid_id[effect->id]" at the end of
pid_upload_effect, for later use. However, if an effect is modified and
re-sent then this identifier is not being copied back from
pidff->pid_id[effect->id] before sending the command to the device. The
fix is to do this at the start of pidff_upload_effect.

Many HID driver options are hidden unless EXPERT is set. While I
understand the idea of simplifying the kernel configuration for most
users, in practice I believe it adds more confusion than it helps.
One thing that worries me is that, in non-EXPERT mode, these drivers
will be either built-in or modular based on apparent magic. For
example, switching INPUT and HID from m to y will cause all these
drivers to be built into the kernel when they were previously built
as modules. Short of enabling EXPERT mode altogether, the user has no
control over that.
Generally I do not think tristate options should depend on !EXPERT.
Of these, 11 of 15 are currently in the hid subsystem.
The HID_LOGITECH option is even worse than the others. Sub-options
depend on it, and this causes menuconfig and friends to display the
option even though the user can't change its value. The help page for
HID_LOGITECH will not explain why the value can't be changed. It only
says, for example:
Depends on: INPUT [=y] && HID [=y]
and that leaves the user puzzled about why the option is forced to y.
You might argue that this is a Kconfig bug, but that doesn't make it
less annoying for the user.
Even worse is that some of the sub-options of HID_LOGITECH select
INPUT_FF_MEMLESS, which in turn gets out of control for the user. So,
if you set INPUT=y and HID=y (something most general purpose
distributions would do these days, as both modules would get loaded on
a vast majority of systems otherwise), and you want support for
force-feedback game controllers, you can't have that as a module, it
has to be built-in, regardless of how rare these devices are.
Of course, all this madness goes away once EXPERT is enabled, but then
the rest of the kernel configuration becomes more complex, which
totally voids the original point.
For this reason, I would like all HID device tristate options to be
displayed regardless of EXPERT being set or not. We can let the
default settings still depend on EXPERT, that's not intrusive.

Change the ownership of power_supply structure from each driver
implementing the class to the power supply core.
The patch changes power_supply_register() function thus all drivers
implementing power supply class are adjusted.
Each driver provides the implementation of power supply. However it
should not be the owner of power supply class instance because it is
exposed by core to other subsystems with power_supply_get_by_name().
These other subsystems have no knowledge when the driver will unregister
the power supply. This leads to several issues when driver is unbound -
mostly because user of power supply accesses freed memory.
Instead let the core own the instance of struct 'power_supply'. Other
users of this power supply will still access valid memory because it
will be freed when device reference count reaches 0. Currently this
means "it will leak" but power_supply_put() call in next patches will
solve it.
This solves invalid memory references in following race condition
scenario:
Thread 1: charger manager
Thread 2: power supply driver, used by charger manager
THREAD 1 (charger manager) THREAD 2 (power supply driver)
========================== ==============================
psy = power_supply_get_by_name()
Driver unbind, .remove
power_supply_unregister()
Device fully removed
psy->get_property()
The 'get_property' call is executed in invalid context because the driver was
unbound and struct 'power_supply' memory was freed.
This could be observed easily with charger manager driver (here compiled
with max17040 fuel gauge):
$ cat /sys/devices/virtual/power_supply/cm-battery/capacity &
$ echo "1-0036" > /sys/bus/i2c/drivers/max17040/unbind

When registering the power supply this new 'power_supply_config' should be

changing the ownership of power_supply structure from driver to the

The stylus of this device works just fine out of the box.
The touch is seen by default as a mouse with relative events and some
gestures.
The wireless and the wired version have slightly different firmwares, but
the debug mode 2 on the feature 2 is common to the 2 devices. In this mode,
all the reports are emitted through the debug interface (pen, raw touch
and mouse emulation), so we have to re-route manually the events.
We keep the Pen interface as a HID_GENERIC one because it works, and only
parse the raw touches while discarding the mouse emulation & gestures.
Switching the default in raw mode allows us to have a consistent user
experience accross all the multitouch touchpads (and enable the touch part
of the devices).
Note that the buttons of this devices are reported through the touch
interface. There is no 'Pad' interface. It seemed more natural to have
the BTN_LEFT and BTN_RIGHT reported with the touch because they are
placed under the touch interface and it looks like they belong to the
touch part.

The Bamboo PAD in debug mode needs to re-route events from the debug
interface to the Pen interface. This can be easily done with
hid_input_report(), but that means that we need to keep a reference to
the various hid_devices.
There should be only one touch and one pen interface per physical tablet,
so there is no need to keep a list of hid-devices, plain pointers are
sufficient.

A touchpad may have firmware based palm detection code enabled which
suppresses 2D data from being reported when the firmware believes a palm is
on the touchpad. This functionality is meant to be used in mouse mode without
a driver. When a driver is present, the driver can do a better job of
determining if a contact is a palm. If this gesture is enabled on a touchpad
operating in rmi mode then the firmware will not properly clear the palm detect
interrupt, causing the touchpad to interrupt indefinately. This patch disables
the palm detect gesture when the touchpad is operating in rmi mode.

When a finger is lifted from a Synaptics touchpad the firmware will continue

This commit exposes in sysfs the HID country code that is stored in the country
member of hid_device structure. It identifies the country code of localized
hardware.
For example some keyboards use it to exhibit the language of the key layout. It
helps the upper layer to identify the localized hardware and setup the correct
language to use.
For USB HID devices the country code comes for the HID descriptor and for
Bluetooth HID devices it is the HIDCountryCode attribute from the SDP database.

Section 4.2.5 of HID Sensor hub specification allows two methods
defining sensor devices.
- Each sensor device by its own collection
- A top level application collection object, including multiple
sensors.
In the first method, each sensor can be in its own sensor application
collection without a physical collection.
In the second method there is a usage id for collection type, which
is defined as an application collection, with multiple physical
collections in it. It is possible to define fusion sensor with this
and may have its own handler. If there is a callback registered
for the collection type, then forward all reports for sensors in
its collection to this handler.

The Microsoft HID over I2C specification says two things regarding the
interrupt:
1) The interrupt should be level sensitive
2) The device keeps the interrupt asserted as long as it has more reports
available.
We've seen that at least some Atmel and N-Trig panels keep the line low as
long as they have something to send. The current version of the driver only
detects the first edge but then fails to read rest of the reports (as the
line is still asserted).
Make the driver follow the specification and configure the HID interrupt to
be level sensitive.
The Windows HID over I2C driver also seems to do the same.

The FF2 driver (usbhid/hid-pidff.c) sends commands to the stick during ff_init.
However, this is called inside a block where driver_input_lock is locked, so
the results of these initial commands are discarded. This behavior is the
"killer", without this nothing else works.
ff_init issues commands using "hid_hw_request". This eventually goes to
hid_input_report, which returns -EBUSY because driver_input_lock is locked. The
change is to delay the ff_init call in hid-core.c until after this lock has
been released.
Calling hid_device_io_start() releases the lock so the device can be
configured. We also need to call hid_device_io_stop() on exit for the lock to
remain locked while ending the init of the drivers.

If a disconnect occurs while getting the actual name of the device
(which can take several HID transactions), the name of the device will
be the hid name, provided by the Unifying Receiver.
This means that in some cases, the user space will see a different
name that what it usually sees when there is no disconnect.
We should store the name of the device in the struct hidpp. That way,
if a disconnect occurs while we are accessing the name,
hidpp_connect_event() can fail, and the input node is not created.
The input node will be created only if we have a connection which

the keysym they produce is usually different depending on the XKB-keymap
used by user-space.
However, key '5' (US 'backslash'/'pipe') reports 0x31 for the upper layout
and 0x32 for the lower layout, as defined by the HID spec. This is highly
confusing as the linux-input API uses a single keycode for both.
So far, this was never a problem as there never has been a keyboard with
both of those keys present at the same time. It would have to look
something like this:
+---+ +---+ +-------+
| 1 | | 2 | | x31 |
+---+ +---+ +-------+
+---+ +---+ +-----+
| 3 | |x32| | 4 |
+---+ +---+ +-----+
HID can represent such a keyboard, but the linux-input API cannot.
Furthermore, any user-space mapping would be confused by this and,
luckily, no-one ever produced such hardware.
Now, the HID input layer fixed this mess by mapping both 0x31 and 0x32 to
the same keycode (KEY_BACKSLASH==0x2b). As only one of both physical keys
is present on a hardware, this works just fine.
Lets introduce hardware-vendors into this:
------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, it seems way to expensive to produce a different device for
American and European layouts. Therefore, hardware-vendors put both keys,
(0x31 and 0x32) on the same keyboard, but only one of them is hooked up
to the physical button, the other one is 'dead'.
This means, they can use the same hardware, with a different button-layout
and automatically produce the correct HID events for American *and*
European layouts. This is unproblematic for normal keyboards, as the
'dead' key will never report any KEY-DOWN events. But RollOver keyboards
send the whole matrix on each key-event, allowing n-key roll-over mode.
This means, we get a 0x31 and 0x32 event on each key-press. One of them
will always be 0, the other reports the real state. As we map both to the
same keycode, we will get spurious key-events, even though the real
key-state never changed.
The easiest way would be to blacklist 'dead' keys and never handle those.
We could simply read the 'country' tag of USB devices and blacklist either
key according to the layout. But... hardware vendors... want the same
device for all countries and thus many of them set 'country' to 0 for all
devices. Meh..
So we have to deal with this properly. As we cannot know which of the keys
is 'dead', we either need a heuristic and track those keys, or we simply
make use of our value-tracking for HID fields. We simply ignore HID events
for absolute data if the data didn't change. As HID tracks events on the
HID level, we haven't done the keycode translation, yet. Therefore, the
'dead' key is tracked independently of the real key, therefore, any events
on it will be ignored.
This patch simply discards any HID events for absolute data if it didn't
change compared to the last report. We need to ignore relative and
buffered-byte reports for obvious reasons. But those cannot be affected by
this bug, so we're fine.
Preferably, we'd do this filtering on the HID-core level. But this might
break a lot of custom drivers, if they do not follow the HID specs.
Therefore, we do this late in hid-input just before we inject it into the
input layer (which does the exact same filtering, but on the keycode
level).
If this turns out to break some devices, we might have to limit filtering
to EV_KEY events. But lets try to do the Right Thing first, and properly
filter any absolute data that didn't change.
This patch is tagged for 'stable' as it fixes a lot of n-key RollOver
hardware. We might wanna wait with backporting for a while, before we know
it doesn't break anything else, though.

Allowing hid-rmi to bind to non rmi devices allows us to support composite USB
devices which contain several HID devices one of which is a HID touchpad.
Since all of the devices have the same VID and PID we can add the device
to the hid_have_special_driver list and have hid-rmi handle all of the devices.
Then hid-rmi's probe can look for the rmi specific HID report IDs and decide if
it should handle the device as a rmi device or simply report that the events

By default the middle button is in a compatibility mode, and generates
standard wheel events when dragging with the middle trackpoint button.
Unfortunately this is buggy:
* The middle button comes up before starting wheel events, causing a middle
click on whatever the mouse cursor was sitting on
* The USB keyboard always generates the "native" horizontal wheel event,
regardless of mode.
Instead, enable the "native" mode the Windows driver uses, and add support
for the custom events this generates. This fixes the USB keyboard wheel
events, and the middle-click up event comes after the wheel events.

This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
the last couple of development cycles.
The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come
from as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes
them available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node
objects without struct device representation as that turns out to
be necessary in some cases. This has been in the works for quite
a few months (and development cycles) and has been approved by
all of the relevant maintainers.
On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
(at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO information
in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines (in which
case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it knows about
the device in question). That also has been approved by the GPIO
core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use it.
Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by
the processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However,
it can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
Next is support for a platform firmware interface based on ACPI
operation regions used by the PMIC (Power Management Integrated
Circuit) chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR platforms.
That interface is used for manipulating power resources and for
thermal management: sensor temperature reporting, trip point setting
and so on.
Also the ACPI core is now going to support the _DEP configuration
information in a limited way. Basically, _DEP it supposed to reflect
off-the-hierarchy dependencies between devices which may be very
indirect, like when AML for one device accesses locations in an
operation region handled by another device's driver (usually, the
device depended on this way is a serial bus or GPIO controller).
The support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery
driver work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to
cover some other use cases in the future.
Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
release.
As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver
for Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of
the DMA engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact
with the thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight
driver should handle some more corner cases, among other things.
On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions
in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some
random and strange looking failures on some systems.
In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series
of commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME
configuration option. That was triggered by a discussion
regarding the generic power domains code during which we realized
that trying to support certain combinations of PM config options
was painful and not really worth it, because nobody would use them
in production anyway. For this reason, we decided to make
CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the
conclusion that the latter became redundant and CONFIG_PM could
be used instead of it. The material here makes that replacement
in a major part of the tree, but there will be at least one more
batch of that in the second part of the merge window.
Specifics:
- Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI
_DSD device configuration objects and a unified device properties
interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that.
As stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows
device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI)
agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers
are now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem
is additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names
to GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is
not present or does not provide the expected data). The changes
in this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki,
Aaron Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam,
Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Support for Hardware Managed Performance States (HWP) as described
in Volume 3, section 14.4, of the Intel SDM in the intel_pstate
driver. CPUID is used to detect whether or not the feature is
supported by the processor. If supported, it will be enabled
automatically unless the intel_pstate=no_hwp switch is present in
the kernel command line. From Dirk Brandewie.
- New Intel Broadwell-H ID for intel_pstate (Dirk Brandewie).
- Support for firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions
used by the PMIC chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR
platforms for power resource control and thermal management
(Aaron Lu).
- Limited support for retrieving off-the-hierarchy dependencies
between devices from ACPI _DEP device configuration objects
and deferred probing support for the ACPI battery driver based
on the _DEP information to make that driver work on Asus T100A
(Lan Tianyu).
- New cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor (Kelvin Cheung).
- ACPICA update to upstream revision 20141107 which only affects
tools (Bob Moore).
- Fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling
code and in the ACPI code related to system suspend and resume
(Lv Zheng and Rafael J Wysocki).
- ACPI core fix for an RCU-related issue in the ioremap() regions
management code that slowed down significantly after CPUs had
been allowed to enter idle states even if they'd had RCU callbakcs
queued and triggered some problems in certain proprietary graphics
driver (and elsewhere). The fix replaces synchronize_rcu() in
that code with synchronize_rcu_expedited() which makes the issue
go away. From Konstantin Khlebnikov.
- ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver fix to handle power
management of the DMA engine included into the LPSS correctly.
The problem is that the DMA engine doesn't have ACPI PM support
of its own and it simply is turned off when the last LPSS device
having ACPI PM support goes into D3cold. To work around that,
the PM domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at
least one device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the
DMA engine is in use. From Andy Shevchenko.
- ACPI backlight driver fix to avoid using it on "Win8-compatible"
systems where it doesn't work and where it was used by default by
mistake (Aaron Lu).
- Assorted minor ACPI core fixes and cleanups from Tomasz Nowicki,
Sudeep Holla, Huang Rui, Hanjun Guo, Fabian Frederick, and
Ashwin Chaugule (mostly related to the upcoming ARM64 support).
- Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) power capping driver
fixes and improvements including new processor IDs (Jacob Pan).
- Generic power domains modification to power up domains after
attaching devices to them to meet the expectations of device
drivers and bus types assuming devices to be accessible at

domains core code (Ulf Hansson, Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the device clocks control

Merge tag 'pm+acpi-3.19-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time we have some more new material than we used to have during
the last couple of development cycles.
The most important part of it to me is the introduction of a unified
interface for accessing device properties provided by platform
firmware. It works with Device Trees and ACPI in a uniform way and
drivers using it need not worry about where the properties come from
as long as the platform firmware (either DT or ACPI) makes them
available. It covers both devices and "bare" device node objects
without struct device representation as that turns out to be necessary
in some cases. This has been in the works for quite a few months (and
development cycles) and has been approved by all of the relevant
maintainers.
On top of that, some drivers are switched over to the new interface
(at25, leds-gpio, gpio_keys_polled) and some additional changes are
made to the core GPIO subsystem to allow device drivers to manipulate
GPIOs in the "canonical" way on platforms that provide GPIO
information in their ACPI tables, but don't assign names to GPIO lines
(in which case the driver needs to do that on the basis of what it
knows about the device in question). That also has been approved by
the GPIO core maintainers and the rfkill driver is now going to use
it.
Second is support for hardware P-states in the intel_pstate driver.
It uses CPUID to detect whether or not the feature is supported by the
processor in which case it will be enabled by default. However, it
can be disabled entirely from the kernel command line if necessary.
The
support added this time is sufficient to make the ACPI battery driver
work on Asus T100A, but it is general enough to be able to cover some
other use cases in the future.
Finally, we have a new cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor.
In addition to the above, there are fixes and cleanups all over the
place as usual and a traditional ACPICA update to a recent upstream
release.
As far as the fixes go, the ACPI LPSS (Low-power Subsystem) driver for
Intel platforms should be able to handle power management of the DMA
engine correctly, the cpufreq-dt driver should interact with the
thermal subsystem in a better way and the ACPI backlight driver should
handle some more corner cases, among other things.
On top of the ACPICA update there are fixes for race conditions in the
ACPICA's interrupt handling code which might lead to some random and
strange looking failures on some systems.
In the cleanups department the most visible part is the series of
commits targeted at getting rid of the CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME configuration
option. That was triggered by a discussion regarding the generic
power domains code during which we realized that trying to support
certain combinations of PM config options was painful and not really
worth it, because nobody would use them in production anyway. For
this reason, we decided to make CONFIG_PM_SLEEP select
CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME and that lead to the conclusion that the latter
became redundant and CONFIG_PM could be used instead of it. The
material here makes that replacement in a major part of the tree, but
there will be at least one more batch of that in the second part of
the merge window.
Specifics:
- Support for retrieving device properties information from ACPI _DSD
device configuration objects and a unified device properties
interface for device drivers (and subsystems) on top of that. As
stated above, this works with Device Trees and ACPI and allows
device drivers to be written in a platform firmware (DT or ACPI)
agnostic way. The at25, leds-gpio and gpio_keys_polled drivers are
now going to use this new interface and the GPIO subsystem is
additionally modified to allow device drivers to assign names to
GPIO resources returned by ACPI _CRS objects (in case _DSD is not
present or does not provide the expected data). The changes in
this set are mostly from Mika Westerberg, Rafael J Wysocki, Aaron
Lu, and Darren Hart with some fixes from others (Fabio Estevam,
Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Support for firmware interface based on ACPI operation regions used
by the PMIC chips on the Intel Baytrail-T and Baytrail-T-CR
platforms for power resource control and thermal management (Aaron
Lu).
- Limited support for retrieving off-the-hierarchy dependencies
between devices from ACPI _DEP device configuration objects and
deferred probing support for the ACPI battery driver based on the
_DEP information to make that driver work on Asus T100A (Lan
Tianyu).
- New cpufreq driver for the Loongson1B processor (Kelvin Cheung).
- ACPICA update to upstream revision 20141107 which only affects
tools (Bob Moore).
- Fixes for race conditions in the ACPICA's interrupt handling code
and in the ACPI code related to system suspend and resume (Lv Zheng
and Rafael J Wysocki).
- ACPI core fix for an RCU-related issue in the ioremap() regions
management code that slowed down significantly after CPUs had been
allowed to enter idle states even if they'd had RCU callbakcs
queued and triggered some problems in certain proprietary graphics
driver (and elsewhere). The fix replaces synchronize_rcu() in that
code with synchronize_rcu_expedited() which makes the issue go
away. From Konstantin Khlebnikov.
- ACPI LPSS (Low-Power Subsystem) driver fix to handle power
management of the DMA engine included into the LPSS correctly. The
problem is that the DMA engine doesn't have ACPI PM support of its
own and it simply is turned off when the last LPSS device having
ACPI PM support goes into D3cold. To work around that, the PM
domain used by the ACPI LPSS driver is redesigned so at least one
device with ACPI PM support will be on as long as the DMA engine is
in use. From Andy Shevchenko.
- ACPI backlight driver fix to avoid using it on "Win8-compatible"
systems where it doesn't work and where it was used by default by
mistake (Aaron Lu).
- Assorted minor ACPI core fixes and cleanups from Tomasz Nowicki,
Sudeep Holla, Huang Rui, Hanjun Guo, Fabian Frederick, and Ashwin
Chaugule (mostly related to the upcoming ARM64 support).
- Intel RAPL (Running Average Power Limit) power capping driver fixes
and improvements including new processor IDs (Jacob Pan).
- Generic power domains modification to power up domains after
attaching devices to them to meet the expectations of device
drivers and bus types assuming devices to be accessible at probe
time (Ulf Hansson).
- Preliminary support for controlling device clocks from the generic
power domains core code and modifications of the ARM/shmobile
platform to use that feature (Ulf Hansson).
- Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the generic power domains core
code (Ulf Hansson, Geert Uytterhoeven).
- Assorted minor fixes and cleanups of the device clocks control code

So here, wacom_open is called, and then wacom_resume is called by the
PM system. However, wacom_open already took the lock when wacom_resume
tries to get it. Freeze.
A little bit of history shows that this already happened in the past
- commit f6cd378372 ("Input: wacom - fix runtime PM related deadlock"),
and the solution was to call first the PM function before taking the lock.
The lock was introduced in commit commit e722409445 ("Input: wacom -
implement suspend and autosuspend") when the autosuspend feature has
been added. Given that usbhid already takes care of this very same
locking between suspend/resume, I think we can simply kill the lock
in open/close.
The lock is now used also with LEDs, so we can not remove it completely.

need to convert them to into units/radian as required by the input_absinfo
struct. To ensure wraparound behaves properly for the rotation axes, the
converted value was rounded up rather than rounded nearest.
Notably, the touchring axes (ABS_WHEEL and ABS_THROTTLE) are left without a
a declared resolution because the their low resolution cannot be accurately
represented (the worst-case rounding-induced error would be ~16 degrees).
Pre-scaling the values and range by at least 10x would reduce the error in

destroyed as it is owned by the transport layer.

When events occurs while no one is listening to the node (hid->open == 0
and usb_kill_urb() called) some events are still stacked somewhere in
the USB (kernel or device?) stack. When the node gets reopened, these
events are drained, and this results in spurious touch down/up, or mouse
button clicks.
The problem was spotted with touchscreens in fdo bug #81781 [1], but it
actually occurs with any mouse using hid-generic or touchscreen.
A way to reproduce it is to call:
$ xinput disable 9 ; sleep 5 ; xinput enable 9
With 9 being the device ID for the touchscreen/mouse. During the "sleep",
produce some touch events or click events. When "xinput enable" is called,
at least one click is generated.
This patch tries to fix this by draining the queue for 50 msec and
during this time frame, not forwarding these old events to the hid layer.
Hans completed the explanation:
"""
Devices like mice (basically any hid device) will have a fifo
on the device side, when we stop submitting urbs to get hid reports from
it, that fifo will fill up, and when we resume we will get whatever
is there in that fifo.

The commit which introduced TransducerSerialNumber (368c966) is missing
two crucial implementation details. Firstly, the commit does not set the
type/code/bit/max fields as expected later down the code which can cause
the driver to crash when a tablet with this usage is connected. Secondly,
the call to 'set_bit' causes MSC_PULSELED to be sent instead of the
expected MSC_SERIAL. This commit addreses both issues.

physical (and logical device). Use the generic hid-input
processing for the keyboard part. The keyboard input device is created
when the receiver is plugged in, so no events are missed on connect.

Now that the receiver forwards the connect/disconnect events, we can
know when the device is available to communicate with us.
When it is ready, we can for instance retrieve its full name, which
guarantee that we always have the same name for the DJ device (the DJ
name is somewhat shorter than the HID++ name).
This mechanism is mandatory for the touchpads line, which has the
min/max information stored in the device. This information can only
be retrieved when the device is connected. So we can not populate
the input device until we are sure that the device is connected.
This patch creates a new input device for such devices. However,
this input is not bound to hid directly, so the various drivers
which wants to use it are required to process completely the
incoming reports in .raw_event().
Note that the patch in itself just adds the bits for the next
ones, and this feature is disabled by default.

The names of the DJ devices are stored in the receiver. These names
can be retrieved through a HID++ command. However, the protocol says
that you have to ask the receiver for that, not the device iteself.
Introduce a special case in the DJ handling where a device can request
its unifying name, and when such a name is given, forward it also to
the corresponding device.
On the HID++ side, the receiver talks only HID++ 1.0, so we need to
implement this part of the protocol in the module.

HID++ is a Logitech-specific protocol for communicating with HID
devices. DJ devices implement HID++, and so we can add the HID++
collection in the report descriptor and forward the incoming
reports from the receiver to the appropriate DJ device.
The same can be done in the other way, if someone calls a
.raw_request(), we can forward it to the correct dj device
by overriding the device_index in the HID++ report.

Logitech devices use a vendor protocol to communicate various
information with the device. This protocol is called HID++,
and an exerpt can be found here:
https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxbRzx7vEV7eWmgwazJ3NUFfQ28&usp=shar
The main difficulty which is related to this protocol is that
it is a synchronous protocol using the input reports.
So when we want to get some information from the device, we need
to wait for a matching input report.
This driver introduce this capabilities to be able to support
the multitouch mode of the Logitech Wireless Touchpad T651
(the bluetooth one). The multitouch data is available directly
from the mouse input reports, and we just need to query the device
on connect about its caracteristics.
HID++ and the touchpad features has a specific reporting mode
which uses pure HID++ reports, but Logitech told us not to use
it for this specific device. During QA, they detected that
some bluetooth input reports where lost, and so the only supported
mode is the pointer mode.

- we can drop the macro is_dj_device: I never been really conviced by

showed that this never happened.
- we can simplify the hid driver logitech-djdevice, and make it aware

- we can use the Wireless PID of the DJ device as the product id of the
hid device, this way the sysfs will differentiate between different
DJ devices.
