asm-generic/tlb: provide MMU_GATHER_TABLE_FREE
As described in the comment, the correct order for freeing pages is: 1) unhook page 2) TLB invalidate page 3) free page This order equally applies to page directories. Currently there are two correct options: - use tlb_remove_page(), when all page directores are full pages and there are no futher contraints placed by things like software walkers (HAVE_FAST_GUP). - use MMU_GATHER_RCU_TABLE_FREE and tlb_remove_table() when the architecture does not do IPI based TLB invalidate and has HAVE_FAST_GUP (or software TLB fill). This however leaves architectures that don't have page based directories but don't need RCU in a bind. For those, provide MMU_GATHER_TABLE_FREE, which provides the independent batching for directories without the additional RCU freeing. asm-generic/tlb: avoid potential double flush
Aneesh reported that: tlb_flush_mmu() tlb_flush_mmu_tlbonly() tlb_flush() <-- #1 tlb_flush_mmu_free() tlb_table_flush() tlb_table_invalidate() tlb_flush_mmu_tlbonly() tlb_flush() <-- #2 does two TLBIs when tlb->fullmm, because __tlb_reset_range() will not clear tlb->end in that case. Observe that any caller to __tlb_adjust_range() also sets at least one of the tlb->freed_tables || tlb->cleared_p* bits, and those are unconditionally cleared by __tlb_reset_range(). Change the condition for actually issuing TLBI to having one of those bits set, as opposed to having tlb->end != 0. mm/mmu_gather: invalidate TLB correctly on batch allocation failure and flush
Architectures for which we have hardware walkers of Linux page table should flush TLB on mmu gather batch allocation failures and batch flush. Some architectures like POWER supports multiple translation modes (hash and radix) and in the case of POWER only radix translation mode needs the above TLBI. This is because for hash translation mode kernel wants to avoid this extra flush since there are no hardware walkers of linux page table. With radix translation, the hardware also walks linux page table and with that, kernel needs to make sure to TLB invalidate page walk cache before page table pages are freed. More details in commit |

mm: add generic p?d_leaf() macros
Patch series "Generic page walk and ptdump", v17. Many architectures current have a debugfs file for dumping the kernel page tables. Currently each architecture has to implement custom functions for this because the details of walking the page tables used by the kernel are different between architectures. This series extends the capabilities of walk_page_range() so that it can deal with the page tables of the kernel (which have no VMAs and can contain larger huge pages than exist for user space). A generic PTDUMP implementation is the implemented making use of the new functionality of walk_page_range() and finally arm64 and x86 are switch to using it, removing the custom table walkers. To enable a generic page table walker to walk the unusual mappings of the kernel we need to implement a set of functions which let us know when the walker has reached the leaf entry. After a suggestion from Will Deacon I've chosen the name p?d_leaf() as this (hopefully) describes the purpose (and is a new name so has no historic baggage). Some architectures have p?d_large macros but this is easily confused with "large pages". This series ends with a generic PTDUMP implemention for arm64 and x86. Mostly this is a clean up and there should be very little functional change. The exceptions are: * arm64 PTDUMP debugfs now displays pages which aren't present (patch 22). * arm64 has the ability to efficiently process KASAN pages (which previously only x86 implemented). This means that the combination of KASAN and DEBUG_WX is now useable. This patch (of 23): Exposing the pud/pgd levels of the page tables to walk_page_range() means we may come across the exotic large mappings that come with large areas of contiguous memory (such as the kernel's linear map). For architectures that don't provide all p?d_leaf() macros, provide generic do nothing default that are suitable where there cannot be leaf pages at that level. Futher patches will add implementations for individual architectures. The name p?d_leaf() is chosen to minimize the confusion with existing uses of "large" pages and "huge" pages which do not necessary mean that the entry is a leaf (for example it may be a set of contiguous entries that only take 1 TLB slot). For the purpose of walking the page tables we don't need to know how it will be represented in the TLB, but we do need to know for sure if it is a leaf of the tree. Modules updates for v5.6
Summary of modules changes for the 5.6 merge window: - Add "MS" (SHF_MERGE|SHF_STRINGS) section flags to __ksymtab_strings to indicate to the linker that it can perform string deduplication (i.e., duplicate strings are reduced to a single copy in the string table). This means any repeated namespace string would be merged to just one entry in __ksymtab_strings. - Various code cleanups and small fixes (fix small memleak in error path, improve moduleparam docs, silence rcu warnings, improve error logging) Signed-off-by: Jessica Yu <jeyu@kernel.org> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJEBAABCAAuFiEEVrp26glSWYuDNrCUwEV+OM47wXIFAl40TvwQHGpleXVAa2Vy bmVsLm9yZwAKCRDARX44zjvBcigxD/4/ksGeXvf3tcsRc5M5S33Tws25vcHeByz/ WEX1f7ZnXukCApFdnpUbVkjiH7EM0+T6lGumv4NPJht+ggP8JoY9hMkBqMmd0js/ +R9U6o0vB4LW8zU68RwE0TS4qphpmpJz16HlhTPtIk4Vo0GBxnEYMMMcVWIeqq1W m3KcEUudv9/Y7IFawDNRJcUWI1jD2vcfaavbU6XbTw82ARiiScZFrWYzf1PGYJ6L XvJNwCVh8TDbS4C5kaNWp2LiGXegjKClosdisCIjkQr/3e+Rg1jOGHpa6B2+Vow2 ttq6lmcikNpcCkCV1tFz+ex2LLsLBMAO939c2C0LIhnnIxVgSkDU0pWn3psAxiOl lRqHtQN42dRlOtBwZ9JoKTT9Wi3H/Lx0FCxg5OdblrSlOqH+GxQjBLkgtvmn/ZAh /dReehUoqbL55GieZuPPyostg3upCDE27IQZdFrZLWbE0VGiIyU9p6GYo7Tssuo2 Tr8kmhYUF9o1AnlzVQgGgZF73PpM6vhmEnn/dipZrgFI//2A3xkAfi5JdhGLKsFi UsaeTX3q/AmnC8dqaNayiftSgaK/4hdSboW1hgWLLD98H608s7Bl1reTmXPxSyWj RvBVP0vp5+u9EItfkAG6jbEpM5ZtyFDUc+5KNfJhym6vaplp5H+krIrT2Li+oLUu d/eifJ/1vA== =boqg -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'modules-for-v5.6' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jeyu/linux Pull module updates from Jessica Yu: "Summary of modules changes for the 5.6 merge window: - Add "MS" (SHF_MERGE|SHF_STRINGS) section flags to __ksymtab_strings to indicate to the linker that it can perform string deduplication (i.e., duplicate strings are reduced to a single copy in the string table). percpu: fix __percpu annotation in asm-generic
The generic implementation of raw_cpu_generic_add_return() is: #define raw_cpu_generic_add_return(pcp, val) \ ({ \ typeof(&(pcp)) __p = raw_cpu_ptr(&(pcp)); \ \ *__p += val; \ *__p; \ }) where the 'pcp' argument is a __percpu lvalue. There, the variable '__p' is declared as a __percpu pointer the type of the address of 'pcp') but: 1) the value assigned to it, the return value of raw_cpu_ptr(), is a plain (__kernel) pointer, not a __percpu one. 2) this variable is dereferenced just after while a __percpu pointer is implicitly __noderef. So, fix the declaration of the 'pcp' variable to its correct type: the plain (non-percpu) pointer corresponding to pcp's address, using the fact that typeof() ignores the address space and the 'noderef' attribute of its agument. Same for raw_cpu_generic_xchg(), raw_cpu_generic_cmpxchg() & raw_cpu_generic_cmpxchg_double(). This removes 209 warnings on ARM, 525 on ARM64, 220 on x86 & more than 2600 on ppc64 (all of them with the default config). MPX requires recompiling applications, which requires compiler support.
Unfortunately, GCC 9.1 is expected to be be released without support for MPX. This means that there was only a relatively small window where folks could have ever used MPX. It failed to gain wide adoption in the industry, and Linux was the only mainstream OS to ever support it widely. Support for the feature may also disappear on future processors. Two fixes for the generic VDSO code which missed 5.5:
- Make the update to the coarse timekeeper unconditional. This is required because the coarse timekeeper interfaces in the VDSO do not depend on a VDSO capable clocksource. mm: remove arch_bprm_mm_init() hook

lib/vdso: Make __arch_update_vdso_data() logic understandable
The function name suggests that this is a boolean checking whether the
architecture asks for an update of the VDSO data, but it works the other

powerpc updates for 5.5 #2
A few commits splitting the KASAN instrumented bitops header in three, to match the split of the asm-generic bitops headers. This is needed on powerpc because we use asm-generic/bitops/non-atomic.h, for the non-atomic bitops, whereas the existing KASAN instrumented bitops assume all the underlying operations are provided by the arch as arch_foo() versions. bitops: introduce the for_each_set_clump8 macro
Pach series "Introduce the for_each_set_clump8 macro", v18. While adding GPIO get_multiple/set_multiple callback support for various drivers, I noticed a pattern of looping manifesting that would be useful standardized as a macro. This patchset introduces the for_each_set_clump8 macro and utilizes it in several GPIO drivers. The for_each_set_clump macro8 facilitates a for-loop syntax that iterates over a memory region entire groups of set bits at a time. For example, suppose you would like to iterate over a 32-bit integer 8 bits at a time, skipping over 8-bit groups with no set bit, where XXXXXXXX represents the current 8-bit group: Example: 10111110 00000000 11111111 00110011 First loop: 10111110 00000000 11111111 XXXXXXXX Second loop: 10111110 00000000 XXXXXXXX 00110011 Third loop: XXXXXXXX 00000000 11111111 00110011 Each iteration of the loop returns the next 8-bit group that has at least one set bit. The for_each_set_clump8 macro has four parameters: * start: set to the bit offset of the current clump * clump: set to the current clump value * bits: bitmap to search within * size: bitmap size in number of bits In this version of the patchset, the for_each_set_clump macro has been reimplemented and simplified based on the suggestions provided by Rasmus Villemoes and Andy Shevchenko in the version 4 submission. In particular, the function of the for_each_set_clump macro has been restricted to handle only 8-bit clumps; the drivers that use the for_each_set_clump macro only handle 8-bit ports so a generic for_each_set_clump implementation is not necessary. Thus, a solution for large clumps (i.e. those larger than the width of a bitmap word) can be postponed until a driver appears that actually requires such a generic for_each_set_clump implementation. For what it's worth, a semi-generic for_each_set_clump (i.e. for clumps smaller than the width of a bitmap word) can be implemented by simply replacing the hardcoded '8' and '0xFF' instances with respective variables. I have not yet had a need for such an implementation, and since it falls short of a true generic for_each_set_clump function, I have decided to forgo such an implementation for now. In addition, the bitmap_get_value8 and bitmap_set_value8 functions are introduced to get and set 8-bit values respectively. Their use is based on the behavior suggested in the patchset version 4 review. This patch (of 14): This macro iterates for each 8-bit group of bits (clump) with set bits, within a bitmap memory region. For each iteration, "start" is set to the bit offset of the found clump, while the respective clump value is stored to the location pointed by "clump". Additionally, the bitmap_get_value8 and bitmap_set_value8 functions are introduced to respectively get and set an 8-bit value in a bitmap memory region. mm/memory.c: fix a huge pud insertion race during faulting
A huge pud page can theoretically be faulted in racing with pmd_alloc()
in __handle_mm_fault(). That will lead to pmd_alloc() returning an
invalid pmd pointer.
Fix this by adding a pud_trans_unstable() function similar to
pmd_trans_unstable() and check whether the pud is really stable before
using the pmd pointer.
Race:
Thread 1: Thread 2: Comment
create_huge_pud() Fallback - not taken.
create_huge_pud() Taken.
pmd_alloc() Returns an invalid pointer.
This will result in user-visible huge page data corruption.
Note that this was caught during a code audit rather than a real
experienced problem. It looks to me like the only implementation that
currently creates huge pud pagetable entries is dev_dax_huge_fault()
which doesn't appear to care much about private (COW) mappings or
write-tracking which is, I believe, a prerequisite for create_huge_pud()
falling back on thread 1, but not in thread 2.

mm: move the backup x_devmap() functions to asm-generic/pgtable.h
The asm-generic/pgtable.h include file appears to be the correct place for the backup x_devmap() inline functions. Moving them here is also necessary if we want to include x_devmap() in the [pmd|pud]_unstable functions. So move the x_devmap() functions to asm-generic/pgtable.h Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/20191115115808.21181-1-thomas_os@shipmail.org Signed-off-by: Thomas Hellstrom <thellstrom@vmware.com> Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: "Kirill A. powerpc updates for 5.5
Highlights: - Infrastructure for secure boot on some bare metal Power9 machines. The firmware support is still in development, so the code here won't actually activate secure boot on any existing systems. - A change to xmon (our crash handler / pseudo-debugger) to restrict it to read-only mode when the kernel is lockdown'ed, otherwise it's trivial to drop into xmon and modify kernel data, such as the lockdown state. - Support for KASLR on 32-bit BookE machines (Freescale / NXP). - Fixes for our flush_icache_range() and __kernel_sync_dicache() (VDSO) to work with memory ranges >4GB. - Some reworks of the pseries CMM (Cooperative Memory Management) driver to make it behave more like other balloon drivers and enable some cleanups of generic mm code. - A series of fixes to our hardware breakpoint support to properly handle unaligned watchpoint addresses. Plus a bunch of other smaller improvements, fixes and cleanups. If a ftrace_ops is registered to ftrace with the PERMANENT flag set, it will prevent ftrace_enabled from being disabled, and if ftrace_enabled is already disabled, it will prevent a ftrace_ops with PREMANENT flag set from being registered. - New register_ftrace_direct(). As eBPF would like to register its own trampolines to be called by the ftrace nop locations directly, without going through the ftrace trampoline, this function has been added. This allows for eBPF trampolines to live along side of ftrace, perf, kprobe and live patching. It also utilizes the ftrace enabled_functions file that keeps track of functions that have been modified in the kernel, to allow for security auditing. - Allow for kernel internal use of ftrace instances. Subsystems in the kernel can now create and destroy their own tracing instances which allows them to have their own tracing buffer, and be able to record events without worrying about other users from writing over their data. - New seq_buf_hex_dump() that lets users use the hex_dump() in their seq_buf usage. - Notifications now added to tracing_max_latency to allow user space to know when a new max latency is hit by one of the latency tracers. - Wider spread use of generic compare operations for use of bsearch and friends. - More synthetic event fields may be defined (32 up from 16) - Use of xarray for architectures with sparse system calls, for the system call trace events. asm-generic: Make msi.h a mandatory include/asm header
msi.h is generic for all architectures except x86, which has its own version. Enabling MSI by adding msi.h to every architecture's Kbuild is just an additional step which doesn't need to be done. Make msi.h mandatory in the asm-generic/Kbuild so we don't have to do it for each architecture. x86/hyperv: Implement hv_is_hibernation_supported()
The API will be used by the hv_balloon and hv_vmbus drivers. Balloon up/down and hot-add of memory must not be active if the user wants the Linux VM to support hibernation, because they are incompatible with hibernation according to Hyper-V team, e.g. upon suspend the balloon VSP doesn't save any info about the ballooned-out pages (if any); so, after Linux resumes, Linux balloon VSC expects that the VSP will return the pages if Linux is under memory pressure, but the VSP will never do that, since the VSP thinks it never stole the pages from the VM. So, if the user wants Linux VM to support hibernation, Linux must forbid balloon up/down and hot-add, and the only functionality of the balloon VSC driver is reporting the VM's memory pressure to the host. Ideally, when Linux detects that the user wants it to support hibernation, the balloon VSC should tell the VSP that it does not support ballooning and hot-add. However, the current version of the VSP requires the VSC should support these capabilities, otherwise the capability negotiation fails and the VSC can not load at all, so with the later changes to the VSC driver, Linux VM still reports to the VSP that the VSC supports these capabilities, but the VSC ignores the VSP's requests of balloon up/down and hot add, and reports an error to the VSP, when applicable. BTW, in the future the balloon VSP driver will allow the VSC to not support the capabilities of balloon up/down and hot add. The ACPI S4 state is not a must for hibernation to work, because Linux is able to hibernate as long as the system can shut down. However in practice we decide to artificially use the presence of the virtual ACPI S4 state as an indicator of the user's intent of using hibernation, because Linux VM must find a way to know if the user wants to use the hibernation feature or not. By default, Hyper-V does not enable the virtual ACPI S4 state; on recent Hyper-V hosts (e.g. RS5, 19H1), the administrator is able to enable the state for a VM by WMI commands. Once all the vmbus and VSC patches for the hibernation feature are accepted, an extra patch will be submitted to forbid hibernation if the virtual ACPI S4 state is absent, i.e. hv_is_hibernation_supported() is false. ftrace: Rename ftrace_graph_stub to ftrace_stub_graph
The ftrace_graph_stub was created and points to ftrace_stub as a way to
assign the functon graph tracer function pointer to a stub function with a
different prototype than what ftrace_stub has and not trigger the C
verifier. The ftrace_graph_stub was created via the linker script
vmlinux.lds.h. Unfortunately, powerpc already uses the name
ftrace_graph_stub for its internal implementation of the function graph
tracer, and even though powerpc would still build, the change via the linker
script broke function tracer on powerpc from working.
By using the name ftrace_stub_graph, which does not exist anywhere else in
the kernel, this should not be a problem.

fgraph: Fix function type mismatches of ftrace_graph_return using ftrace_stub
The C compiler is allowing more checks to make sure that function pointers are assigned to the correct prototype function. Unfortunately, the function graph tracer uses a special name with its assigned ftrace_graph_return function pointer that maps to a stub function used by the function tracer (ftrace_stub). The ftrace_graph_return variable is compared to the ftrace_stub in some archs to know if the function graph tracer is enabled or not. This means we can not just simply create a new function stub that compares it without modifying all the archs. Instead, have the linker script create a function_graph_stub that maps to ftrace_stub, and this way we can define the prototype for it to match the prototype of ftrace_graph_return, and make the compiler checks all happy! A lot of architectures reuse the same simple ioremap implementation, so start lifting the most simple variant to lib/ioremap.c. arch: rely on asm-generic/io.h for default ioremap_* definitions
Various architectures that use asm-generic/io.h still defined their own default versions of ioremap_nocache, ioremap_wt and ioremap_wc that point back to plain ioremap directly or indirectly. Remove these definitions and rely on asm-generic/io.h instead. For this to work the backup ioremap_* defintions needs to be changed to purely cpp macros instea of inlines to cover for architectures like openrisc that only define ioremap after including <asm-generic/io.h>.
