The map_word_() functions, dating back to linux-2.6.8, try to perform
bitwise operations on a 'map_word' structure. This may have worked
with compilers that were current then (gcc-3.4 or earlier), but end
up being rather inefficient on any version I could try now (gcc-4.4 or
higher). Specifically we hit a problem analyzed in gcc PR81715 where we
fail to reuse the stack space for local variables.
This can be seen immediately in the stack consumption for
cfi_staa_erase_varsize() and other functions that (with CONFIG_KASAN)
can be up to 2200 bytes. Changing the inline functions into macros brings
this down to 1280 bytes. Without KASAN, the same problem exists, but
the stack consumption is lower to start with, my patch shrinks it from
920 to 496 bytes on with arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc-5.4, and saves around
1KB in .text size for cfi_cmdset_0020.c, as it avoids copying map_word
structures for each call to one of these helpers.
With the latest gcc-8 snapshot, the problem is fixed in upstream gcc,
but nobody uses that yet, so we should still work around it in mainline
kernels and probably backport the workaround to stable kernels as well.
We had a couple of other functions that suffered from the same gcc bug,
and all of those had a simpler workaround involving dummy variables
in the inline function. Unfortunately that did not work here, the
macro hack was the best I could come up with.
It would also be helpful to have someone to a little performance testing
on the patch, to see how much it helps in terms of CPU utilitzation.

Introduce a new interface to instruct NAND controllers to send specific
NAND operations. The new interface takes the form of a single method
called ->exec_op(). This method is designed to replace ->cmd_ctrl(),
->cmdfunc() and ->read/write_byte/word/buf() hooks.
->exec_op() is passed a set of instructions describing the operation
to execute. Each instruction has a type (ADDR, CMD, DATA, WAITRDY)
and delay. The delay is here to help simple controllers wait enough
time between each instruction, advanced controllers with integrated
timings control can ignore these delays.
Controllers that natively support complex operations (operations
formed of several instructions) can use the NAND op parser
infrastructure. This infrastructure allows controller drivers to
describe the sequence of instructions they support (called
nand_op_pattern) and a hook for each of these supported sequences. The
core then tries to find the best match for a given NAND operation, and
calls the associated hook.
Various other helpers are also added to ease NAND controller drivers
writing.
This new interface should ease support of vendor specific operations
in that NAND manufacturer drivers now have a way to check if the
controller they are connected to supports a specific operation, and
complain or refuse to probe the NAND chip when that's not the case.

Right now, the chip->data_interface field is populated in
nand_scan_tail(), so after the whole NAND detection has taken place.
This is fine because these timings are not yet used by the core so
early in the probe process, but the situation is about to change with
the introduction of ->exec_op().
Also, by convention, nand_scan_ident() is not supposed to allocate
resources, only nand_scan_tail() can, so this prevent us from
allocating and initializing the data_interface object in
nand_scan_ident().
In order to solve this problem, directly embed a data_interface object
in nand_chip so that we don't have to allocate it, and initialize it to
ONFI SDR mode 0 at the very beginning of nand_scan_ident().

The core currently send the READ0 and SEQIN+PAGEPROG commands in
nand_do_read/write_ops(). This is inconsistent with
->read/write_oob[_raw]() hooks behavior which are expected to send
these commands.
There's already a flag (NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS) to inform the core
that a specific controller wants to send the READ/SEQIN+PAGEPROG
commands on its own, but it's an opt-in flag, and existing drivers are
unlikely to be updated to pass it.
Moreover, some controllers cannot dissociate the READ/PAGEPROG commands
from the associated data transfer and ECC engine activation, and
developers have to hack things in their ->cmdfunc() implementation to
handle such complex cases, or have to accept the perf penalty of sending
twice the same command.
To address this problem we are planning on adding a new interface which
is passed all information about a NAND operation (including the amount
of data to transfer) and replacing all calls to ->cmdfunc() to calls to
this new ->exec_op() hook. But, in order to do that, we need to have all
->cmdfunc() calls placed near their associated ->read/write_buf/byte()
calls.
Modify the core and relevant drivers to make NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS
the default case, and remove this flag.

This is part of the process of removing direct calls to ->cmdfunc()
outside of the core in order to introduce a better interface to execute
NAND operations.
Here we provide several helpers and make use of them to remove all
direct calls to ->cmdfunc(). This way, we can easily modify those
helpers to make use of the new ->exec_op() interface when available.

For Micron spi nor device, when erase/program operation
fails, especially the failure results from intending to
modify protected space, spi-nor upper layers still get
the return which shows the operation succeeds. This is
because current spi_nor_fsr_ready() only uses FSR bit.7
(flag status register) to check device whether ready.
This patch fixes this issue by checking relevant error
bits in FSR.
The FSR is a powerful tool to investigate the status of
device, checking information regarding what the memory is
actually doing and detecting possible error conditions.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

This patch extracts some chunks from spi_nor_init_params and spi_nor_scan()
and moves them into a new spi_nor_init() function.
Indeed, spi_nor_init() regroups all the required SPI flash commands to be
sent to the SPI flash memory before performing any runtime operations
(Fast Read, Page Program, Sector Erase, ...). Hence spi_nor_init():
1) removes the flash protection if applicable for certain vendors.
2) sets the Quad Enable bit, if needed, before using Quad SPI protocols.
3) makes the memory enter its (stateful) 4-byte address mode, if needed,
for SPI flash memory > 128Mbits not supporting the 4-byte address
instruction set.
spi_nor_scan() now ends by calling spi_nor_init() once the probe phase has
completed. Further patches could also use spi_nor_init() to implement the
mtd->_resume() handler for the spi-nor framework.

There is exactly one board in the kernel that defines platform data
for the GPIO NAND driver.
Use the feature to provide a lookup table for the GPIOs in the board
file so we can convert the driver as a whole to just use GPIO
descriptors.
After this we can cut the use of <linux/of_gpio.h> and use the GPIO
descriptor management from <linux/gpio/consumer.h> alone to grab and use
the GPIOs used in the driver.
I also created a local struct device *dev in the probe() function
because I was getting annoyed with all the &pdev->dev dereferencing.

Several drivers check ->chipsize to see if the third row address cycle
is needed. Instead of embedding magic sizes such as 32MB, 128MB in

Merge v4.13-rc7 back to resolve merge conflicts in
drivers/mtd/nand/nandsim.c and include/asm-generic/vmlinux.lds.h.
With the introduction of sharpslpart partition parser we can now read the
offsets from NAND: we specify the list of the parsers as platform data, with
cmdlinepart and ofpart parsers first allowing to override the part. table
written in NAND. This is done in the board files using this driver.
Thus, we need to extend sharpsl_nand_platform_data to consider the partition
parsers.

This commit removes hard-coded '8' used for looping into
struct nand_chip.id.data array.
NAND_MAX_ID_LEN has been introduced by Artem Bityutskiy in

This commit unifies ids length in nand base driver.

When XIP_KERNEL is enabled, some functions are defined in the .data

Specifically, this does not work because the .data section is not
marked executable, which leads LD to not generate trampolines for
long calls.
This moves the __xipram functions into their own .xiptext section instead.
The section is still placed next to .data and located in RAM but is marked
executable, which avoids the build errors.
Also, we only need to place the XIP functions into a separate section
if both CONFIG_XIP_KERNEL and CONFIG_MTD_XIP are set: When only MTD_XIP
is used, the whole kernel is still in RAM and we do not need to worry
about pulling out the rug under it. When only XIP_KERNEL but not MTD_XIP
is set, the kernel is in some form of ROM, but we never write to it.
Note that MTD_XIP has been broken on ARM since around 2011 or 2012. I
have sent another patch[2] to fix compilation, which I plan to merge
through arm-soc unless there are objections. The obvious alternative
to that would be to completely rip out the MTD_XIP support from the
kernel, since obviously nobody has been using it in a long while.

We are planning to share more code between different NAND based
devices (SPI NAND, OneNAND and raw NANDs), but before doing that
we need to move the existing include/linux/mtd/nand.h file into
include/linux/mtd/rawnand.h so we can later create a nand.h header
containing all common structure and function prototypes.

Commit 7d70f334ad ("mtd: nand: add lock/unlock routines") introduced
support for the Micron LOCK/UNLOCK commands but no one ever used the
nand_lock/unlock() functions.
Remove support for these vendor-specific operations from the core. If
one ever wants to add them back they should be put in nand_micron.c and
mtd->_lock/_unlock should be directly assigned from there instead of
exporting the functions.

S25FL{128|256|512}S datasheets say:
"When P_ERR or E_ERR bits are set to one, the WIP bit will remain set to
one indicating the device remains busy and unable to receive new operation
commands. A Clear Status Register (CLSR) command must be received to return
the device to standby mode."
Current spi-nor code works until first error occurs, but write/erase errors
are not just rare hardware failures, they also occur if user tries to flash
write-protected areas. After such attempt no SPI command can be executed
any more and even read fails. This patch adds support for P_ERR and E_ERR
bits in Status Register 1 (so that operation fails immediately and not
after a long timeout) and proper recovery from the error condition.
Tested on Spansion S25FS128S, which is supported by S25FL129P entry.

Several MTD devices are using debugfs entries created in the root.
This commit provides the means for a standardized subtree, creating
one "mtd" entry at root, and one entry per device inside it, named
after the device.
The tree is registered in add_mtd_device, and released in
del_mtd_device.
Devices docg3, mtdswap and nandsim were updated to use this subtree
instead of custom ones, and their entries were prefixed with the
drivers' names.

Some devices have partitions that are kind of containers with extra
subpartitions / volumes instead of e.g. a simple filesystem data. To
support such cases we need to first create normal flash device
partitions and then take care of these special ones.
It's very common case for home routers. Depending on the vendor there
are formats like TRX, Seama, TP-Link, WRGG & more. All of them are used
to embed few partitions into a single one / single firmware file.
Ideally all vendors would use some well documented / standardized format
like UBI (and some probably start doing so), but there are still
countless devices on the market using these poor vendor specific
formats.
This patch extends MTD subsystem by allowing to specify list of parsers
that should be tried for a given partition. Supporting such poor formats
is highly unlikely to be the top priority so these changes try to
minimize maintenance cost to the minimum. It reuses existing code for
these new parsers and just adds a one property and one new function.
This implementation requires setting partition parsers in a flash
parser. A proper change of bcm47xxpart will follow and in the future we
will hopefully also find a solution for doing it with ofpart
("fixed-partitions").

struct nand_ecc_caps was designed as flexible as possible to support
multiple stepsizes (like sunxi_nand.c).
So, we need to write multiple arrays even for the simplest case.
I guess many controllers support a single stepsize, so here is a
shorthand macro for the case.
It allows to describe like ...
NAND_ECC_CAPS_SINGLE(denali_pci_ecc_caps, denali_calc_ecc_bytes, 512, 8, 15);
... instead of
static const int denali_pci_ecc_strengths[] = {8, 15};
static const struct nand_ecc_step_info denali_pci_ecc_stepinfo = {
.stepsize = 512,
.strengths = denali_pci_ecc_strengths,
.nstrengths = ARRAY_SIZE(denali_pci_ecc_strengths),
};
static const struct nand_ecc_caps denali_pci_ecc_caps = {
.stepinfos = &denali_pci_ecc_stepinfo,
.nstepinfos = 1,
.calc_ecc_bytes = denali_calc_ecc_bytes,

Driver are responsible for setting up ECC parameters correctly.
Those include:
- Check if ECC parameters specified (usually by DT) are valid
- Meet the chip's ECC requirement
- Maximize ECC strength if NAND_ECC_MAXIMIZE flag is set
The logic can be generalized by factoring out common code.
This commit adds 3 helpers to the NAND framework:
nand_check_ecc_caps - Check if preset step_size and strength are valid
nand_match_ecc_req - Match the chip's requirement
nand_maximize_ecc - Maximize the ECC strength
To use the helpers above, a driver needs to provide:
- Data array of supported ECC step size and strength
- A hook that calculates ECC bytes from the combination of
step_size and strength.
By using those helpers, code duplication among drivers will be
reduced.

Now that the core NAND subsystem has support for on-die ECC, this commit
brings the necessary code to support on-die ECC on Micron NANDs.
In micron_nand_init(), we detect if the Micron NAND chip supports on-die
ECC mode, by checking a number of conditions:
- It must be an ONFI NAND
- It must be a SLC NAND
- Enabling *and* disabling on-die ECC must work
- The on-die ECC must be correcting 4 bits per 512 bytes of data. Some
Micron NAND chips have an on-die ECC able to correct 8 bits per 512
bytes of data, but they work slightly differently and therefore we
don't support them in this patch.
Then, if the on-die ECC cannot be disabled (some Micron NAND have on-die
ECC forcefully enabled), we bail out, as we don't support such
NANDs. Indeed, the implementation of raw_read()/raw_write() make the
assumption that on-die ECC can be disabled. Support for Micron NANDs
with on-die ECC forcefully enabled can easily be added, but in the
absence of such HW for testing, we preferred to simply bail out.
If the on-die ECC is supported, and requested in the Device Tree, then
it is indeed enabled, by using custom implementations of the
->read_page(), ->read_page_raw(), ->write_page() and ->write_page_raw()
operation to properly handle the on-die ECC.
In the non-raw functions, we need to enable the internal ECC engine
before issuing the NAND_CMD_READ0 or NAND_CMD_SEQIN commands, which is
why we set the NAND_ECC_CUSTOM_PAGE_ACCESS option at initialization
time (it asks the NAND core to let the NAND driver issue those
commands).

A lot of drivers are providing their own ->cmdfunc(), and most of the
time this implementation does not support all possible NAND operations.
But since ->cmdfunc() cannot return an error code, the core has no way
to know that the operation it requested is not supported.
This is a problem we cannot address for all kind of operations with the
current design, but we can prevent these silent failures for the
GET/SET FEATURES operation by overloading the default
->onfi_{set,get}_features() methods with one returning -ENOTSUPP.

This patch changes the prototype of spi_nor_scan(): its 3rd parameter
is replaced by a 'struct spi_nor_hwcaps' pointer, which tells the spi-nor
framework about the actual hardware capabilities supported by the SPI
controller and its driver.
Besides, this patch also introduces a new 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter'
telling the spi-nor framework about the hardware capabilities supported by
the SPI flash memory and the associated settings required to use those
hardware caps.
Then, to improve the readability of spi_nor_scan(), the discovery of the
memory settings and the memory initialization are now split into two
dedicated functions.
1 - spi_nor_init_params()
The spi_nor_init_params() function is responsible for initializing the
'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter'. Currently this structure is filled with
legacy values but further patches will allow to override some parameter
values dynamically, for instance by reading the JESD216 Serial Flash
Discoverable Parameter (SFDP) tables from the SPI memory.
The spi_nor_init_params() function only deals with the hardware
capabilities of the SPI flash memory: especially it doesn't care about
the hardware capabilities supported by the SPI controller.
2 - spi_nor_setup()
The second function is called once the 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter'
has been initialized by spi_nor_init_params().
With both 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter' and 'struct spi_nor_hwcaps',
the new argument of spi_nor_scan(), spi_nor_setup() computes the best
match between hardware caps supported by both the (Q)SPI memory and
controller hence selecting the relevant settings for (Fast) Read and Page
Program operations.

A number of NAND flashes have a capability called "on-die ECC" where the
NAND chip itself is capable of detecting and correcting errors.
Linux already has support for using the ECC implementation of the NAND
controller, or a software based ECC implementation, but not for using
the ECC implementation of the NAND controller. However, such an
implementation is sometimes useful in situations where the NAND
controller provides ECC algorithms that are not strong enough for the
NAND chip used on the system. A typical case is a NAND chip that
requires a 4-bit ECC, while the NAND controller only provides a 1-bit
ECC algorithm.
This commit introduces the support for the NAND_ECC_ON_DIE ECC mode:
- Parsing of the "on-die" value for the "nand-ecc-mode" Device Tree
property
- Handling NAND_ECC_ON_DIE case in nand_scan_tail(). The idea is that
the vendor specific code for the NAND chip must implement
->read_page() and ->write_page(). It may optionally provide its own
->read_page_raw() and ->write_page_raw() as well. For OOB operation,
we assume the standard operations are good enough, but they can be
overridden by the vendor specific code if needed.

The comment for ecc.read_page() requires that it should return
"0 if bitflips uncorrectable".
Actually, drivers could return positive values when uncorrectable
bitflips occur. For example, nand_read_page_swecc() is the case.
If ecc.correct() returns -EBADMSG for the first ECC sector, and
a positive value for the second one, nand_read_page_swecc() returns
a positive max_bitflips and increments ecc_stats.failed for the same
page.
The requirement can be relaxed by tweaking nand_do_read_ops().

- add support to new memory parts.
- add support to S3AN memories.
- add support to the Intel SPI controller.
- add support to the Aspeed AST2400 and AST2550 controllers.
- fix max SPI transfer and message sizes in m25p80_read().
- fix the Candence QSPI driver.
- fix the Freescale QSPI driver.
"""
This patch renames the SPINOR_OP_* macros of the 4-byte address
instruction set so the new names all share a common pattern: the 4-byte
address name is built from the 3-byte address name appending the "_4B"
suffix.
The patch also introduces new op codes to support other SPI protocols such
as SPI 1-4-4 and SPI 1-2-2.
This is a transitional patch and will help a later patch of spi-nor.c
to automate the translation from the 3-byte address op codes into their
4-byte address version.

Xilinx Spartan-3AN FPGAs contain an In-System Flash where they keep
their configuration data and (optionally) some user data.
The protocol of this flash follows most of the spi-nor standard. With
the following differences:
- Page size might not be a power of two.
- The address calculation (default addressing mode).
- The spi nor commands used.
Protocol is described on Xilinx User Guide UG333

The FSMC driver has an execution path and a header file in
<linux/mtd/fsmc.h> that serves to support passing in platform
data through board files, albeit no upstream users of this
mechanism exist.
The header file also contains function headers for functions that
do not exist in the kernel.
Delete this and move the platform data struct, parsing and
handling into the driver, assume we are using OF and make the
driver depend on OF, remove the ifdefs making that optional.

When changing from one data interface setting to another, one has to
ensure a specific sequence which is described in the ONFI spec.
One of these constraints is that the CE line has go high after a reset
before a command can be sent with the new data interface setting, which
is not guaranteed by the current implementation.
Rework the nand_reset() function and all the call sites to make sure the
CE line is asserted and released when required.

The generic NAND DT bindings allows one to tweak the ECC strength and
step size to their need. It can be used to lower the ECC strength to
match a bootloader/firmware config, but might also be used to get a better
reliability.
In the latter case, the user might want to use the maximum ECC strength
without having to explicitly calculate the exact value (this value not
only depends on the OOB size, but also on the NAND controller, and can
be tricky to extract).
Add a generic 'nand-ecc-maximize' DT property and the associated
NAND_ECC_MAXIMIZE flag, to let ECC controller drivers select the best
ECC strength and step-size on their own.

The NAND framework provides several helpers to query timing modes supported
by a NAND chip, but this implies that all NAND controller drivers have
to implement the same timings selection dance. Also currently NAND
devices can be resetted at arbitrary places which also resets the timing
for ONFI chips to timing mode 0.
Provide a common logic to select the best timings based on ONFI or
->onfi_timing_mode_default information. Hook this into nand_reset()
to make sure the new timing is applied each time during a reset.
NAND controller willing to support timings adjustment should just
implement the ->setup_data_interface() method.

We only have struct nand_sdr_timings for NAND timings in SDR mode,

This patch adds struct nand_data_interface which stores the timing
type and a union of different timings. This can be used to pass to

When NAND devices are resetted some initialization may have to be done,
like for example they have to be configured for the timing mode that

MLC and TLC NAND devices are using NAND cells exposing more than one bit,
but instead of attaching all the bits in a given cell to a single NAND
page, each bit is usually attached to a different page. This concept is
called 'page pairing', and has significant impacts on the flash storage
usage.
The main problem showed by these devices is that interrupting a page
program operation may not only corrupt the page we are programming
but also the page it is paired with, hence the need to expose to MTD
users the pairing scheme information.
The pairing APIs allows one to query pairing information attached to a
given page (here called wunit), or the other way around (the wunit
pointed by pairing information).
It also provides several helpers to help the conversion between absolute
offsets and wunits, and query the number of pairing groups.

Replace the default nand_ecclayout definitions for large and small page
devices with the equivalent mtd_ooblayout_ops.
Signed-off-by: Boris Brezillon <boris.brezillon@free-electrons.com>
ECC layout definitions are currently exposed using the nand_ecclayout
struct which embeds oobfree and eccpos arrays with predefined size.
This approach was acceptable when NAND chips were providing relatively
small OOB regions, but MLC and TLC now provide OOB regions of several
hundreds of bytes, which implies a non negligible overhead for everybody
even those who only need to support legacy NANDs.
Create an mtd_ooblayout_ops interface providing the same functionality
(expose the ECC and oobfree layout) without the need for this huge
structure.
The mtd->ecclayout is now deprecated and should be replaced by the
equivalent mtd_ooblayout_ops. In the meantime we provide a wrapper around
the ->ecclayout field to ease migration to this new model.

Export the default read/write oob functions (for the standard and syndrome
scheme), so that drivers can use them for their raw implementation and
implement their own functions for the normal oob operation.
This is required if your ECC engine is capable of fixing some of the OOB
data. In this case you have to overload the ->read_oob() and ->write_oob(),
but if you don't specify the ->read/write_oob_raw() functions they are
assigned to the ->read/write_oob() implementation, which is not what you
want.

Our nand_ecc_modes_t is already a bit abused by value NAND_ECC_SOFT_BCH.
This enum should store ECC mode only and putting algorithm details there
is a bad idea. It would result in too many values impossible to support
in a sane way.
To solve this problem let's add a new enum. We'll have to modify all
drivers to set it properly but once it's done it'll be possible to drop
NAND_ECC_SOFT_BCH. That will result in a cleaner design and more
possibilities like setting ECC algorithm for hardware ECC mode.

When map_word gets too large, we use a lot of kernel stack, and for
MTD_MAP_BANK_WIDTH_32, this means we use more than the recommended
1024 bytes in a number of functions:
drivers/mtd/chips/cfi_cmdset_0020.c: In function 'cfi_staa_write_buffers':
drivers/mtd/chips/cfi_cmdset_0020.c:651:1: warning: the frame size of 1336 bytes is larger than 1024 bytes [-Wframe-larger-than=]

This can be avoided if all operations on the map word are done
indirectly and the stack gets reused between the calls. We can
mostly achieve this by selecting MTD_COMPLEX_MAPPINGS whenever
MTD_MAP_BANK_WIDTH_32 is set, but for the case that no other
bank width is enabled, we also need to use a non-constant
map_bankwidth() to convince the compiler to use less stack.

One of the arguments passed to struct nand_chip's block_bad op is
'getchip', which, if true, is supposed to get and select the nand device,
and later unselect and release the device.
This op is intended to be replaceable by drivers. The drivers shouldn't
be responsible for selecting/unselecting chip. Like other ops, the chip
should already be selected before the block_bad op is called.
Remove the getchip argument from the block_bad op and
nand_block_checkbad. Move the chip selection to nand_block_isbad, since it
is the only caller to nand_block_checkbad which requires chip selection.

By convention, the FIFO address we pass using dmaengine_slave_config
is a physical address in the form that is understood by the DMA
engine, as a dma_addr_t, phys_addr_t or resource_size_t.
The sh_flctl driver however passes a virtual __iomem address that
gets cast to dma_addr_t in the slave driver. This happens to work
on shmobile because that platform sets up an identity mapping for
its MMIO regions, but such code is not portable to other platforms,
and prevents us from ever changing the platform mapping or reusing
the driver on other architectures like ARM64 that might not have the
mapping.
We also get a warning about a type mismatch for the case that
dma_addr_t is wider than a pointer, i.e. when CONFIG_LPAE is set:
drivers/mtd/nand/sh_flctl.c: In function 'flctl_setup_dma':
drivers/mtd/nand/sh_flctl.c:163:17: warning: cast from pointer to integer of different size [-Wpointer-to-int-cast]

the FIFO that is extracted from the MMIO resource, making the
code more portable and avoiding the warning.

Moreover, this function is buggy since the introduction of the plat_nand

The problem this patch is trying to address is such, that SPI NOR flash
devices attached to a dedicated SPI NOR controller cannot read their
properties from the associated struct device_node.
A couple of facts first:
1) Each SPI NOR flash has a struct spi_nor associated with it.
2) Each SPI NOR flash has certain device properties associated
with it, for example the OF property 'm25p,fast-read' is a
good pick. These properties are used by the SPI NOR core to
select which opcodes are sent to such SPI NOR flash. These
properties are coming from spi_nor .dev->of_node .
The problem is, that for SPI NOR controllers, the struct spi_nor .dev
element points to the struct device of the SPI NOR controller, not the
SPI NOR flash. Therefore, the associated dev->of_node also is the
one of the controller and therefore the SPI NOR core code is trying to
parse the SPI NOR controller's properties, not the properties of the
SPI NOR flash.
Note: The m25p80 driver is not affected, because the controller and
the flash are the same device, so the associated device_node
of the controller and the flash are the same.
This patch adjusts the SPI NOR core such that the device_node is not
picked from spi_nor .dev directly, but from a new separate spi_nor
.flash_node element. This let's the SPI NOR controller drivers set up
a different spi_nor .flash_node element for each SPI NOR flash.
This patch also fixes the controller drivers to be compatible with
this modification and correctly set the spi_nor .flash_node element.

Since "BDI: Provide backing device capability information [try #3]" the
backing_dev_info structure also provides flags for the kind of mmap
operation available in a nommu environment, which is entirely unrelated
to it's original purpose.
Introduce a new nommu-only file operation to provide this information to
the nommu mmap code instead. Splitting this from the backing_dev_info
structure allows to remove lots of backing_dev_info instance that aren't
otherwise needed, and entirely gets rid of the concept of providing a
backing_dev_info for a character device. It also removes the need for
the mtd_inodefs filesystem.

This patch adds code which enables Quad I/O mode on Micron SPI NOR flashes.
For Micron SPI NOR flash, enabling or disabling quad I/O protocol can be
done By two methods, which are to use EVCR (Enhanced Volatile
Configuration Register) and the ENTER QUAD I/O MODE command. There is no
difference between these two methods. Unfortunately, for some Micron SPI
NOR flashes, there no ENTER Quad I/O command (35h), such as n25q064. But
for all current Micron SPI NOR, if it support quad I/O mode, using EVCR
definitely be supported. It is a recommended method to enable Quad I/O
mode by EVCR, Quad I/O protocol bit 7. When EVCR bit 7 is reset to 0,
the SPI NOR flash will operate in quad I/O mode.
This patch has been tested on N25Q512A and MT25TL256BAA1ESF. Micron SPI
NOR of spi_nor_ids[] table all support this method.

read_page_raw and write_page_raw method description is not clear enough.
It clearly specifies that ECC correction should not be involved but does
not talk about specific layout (by layout I mean where in-band and
out-of-band data are stored on the NAND media) used by NAND/ECC
controllers.
Those specific layouts might impact MTD users and thus should be hidden (as
already done in the standard NAND_ECC_HW_SYNDROME implementation).
Clearly state this constraint in the nand_ecc_ctrl struct documentation.

m25p80's device ID table is now spi_nor_ids, defined in spi-nor. The
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() macro doesn't work with extern definitions, but
its use was also removed at the same time. Now if m25p80 is built as
a module it doesn't get the necessary aliases to be loaded
automatically.
A clean solution to this will involve defining the list of device
IDs in spi-nor.h and removing struct spi_device_id from the spi-nor
API, but this is quite a large change.
As a quick fix suitable for stable, copy the device IDs back into
m25p80.

The nand_chip::erase_cmd callback previously served a dual purpose; for
one, it allowed a per-flash-chip override, so that AG-AND devices could
use a different erase command than other NAND. These AND devices were
dropped in commit 14c6578683 (mtd: nand:
remove AG-AND support). On the other hand, some drivers (denali and
doc-g4) need to use this sort of callback to implement
controller-specific erase operations.
To make the latter operation easier for some drivers (e.g., ST's new BCH
NAND driver), it helps if the command dispatch and wait functions can be
lumped together, rather than called separately.
This patch does two things:
1. Pull the call to chip->waitfunc() into chip->erase_cmd(), and return
the status from this callback
2. Rename erase_cmd() to just erase(), since this callback does a
little more than just send a command

The NAND command helpers tend to automatically shift the column address
for x16 bus devices, since most commands expect a word address, not a
byte address. The Read ID command, however, expects an 8-bit address
(i.e., 0x00, 0x20, or 0x40 should not be translated to 0x00, 0x10, or
0x20).
This fixes the column address for a few drivers which imitate the
nand_base defaults. Note that I don't touch sh_flctl.c, since it already
handles this problem slightly differently (note its comment "READID is
always performed using an 8-bit bus").
I have not tested this patch, as I only have x8 parts up for testing at
this point. Hopefully that can change soon...

The patch converts the arrays to buffer pointers for nand_buffers{}.
The cafe_nand.c is the only NAND_OWN_BUFFERS user which allocates
nand_buffers{} itself.
This patch disables the DMA for nand_scan_ident, and restores the DMA
status after we finish the nand_scan_ident. This way, we can get page
size and OOB size and use them to allocate cafe->dmabuf.
Since the cafe_nand.c uses the NAND_ECC_HW_SYNDROME ECC mode, we do not
allocate the buffers for @ecccalc and @ecccode.

According to the Open NAND Flash Interface Specification (ONFI) Revision
3.1 "Parameters are always transferred on the lower 8-bits of the data
bus." for the Get Features and Set Features commands.
So using read_buf and write_buf is wrong for 16-bit wide nand chips as
they use I/O[15:0]. The Get Features command is easily fixed using 4
times the read_byte callback. For Set Features implement a new
overwritable callback "write_byte". Still I expect the default to work
just fine for all controllers and making it overwriteable was just done
for symmetry.

Micron provides READ RETRY support via the ONFI vendor-specific
parameter block (to indicate how many read-retry modes are available)
and the ONFI {GET,SET}_FEATURES commands with a vendor-specific feature
address (to support reading/switching the current read-retry mode).
The recommended sequence is as follows:
1. Perform PAGE_READ operation
2. If no ECC error, we are done
3. Run SET_FEATURES with feature address 89h, mode 1
4. Retry PAGE_READ operation
5. If ECC error and there are remaining supported modes, increment the
mode and return to step 3. Otherwise, this is a true ECC error.
6. Run SET_FEATURES with feature address 89h, mode 0, to return to the
default state.
This patch implements the chip->setup_read_retry() callback for
Micron and fills in the chip->read_retries.
Tested on Micron MT29F32G08CBADA, which supports 8 read-retry modes.
The Micron vendor-specific table was checked against the datasheets for

Modern MLC (and even SLC?) NAND can experience a large number of
bitflips (beyond the recommended correctability capacity) due to drifts
in the voltage threshold (Vt). These bitflips can cause ECC errors to
occur well within the expected lifetime of the flash. To account for
this, some manufacturers provide a mechanism for shifting the Vt
threshold after a corrupted read.
The generic pattern seems to be that a particular flash has N read retry
modes (where N = 0, traditionally), and after an ECC failure, the host
should reconfigure the flash to use the next available mode, then retry
the read operation. This process repeats until all bitfips can be
corrected or until the host has tried all available retry modes.
This patch adds the infrastructure support for a
vendor-specific/flash-specific callback, used for setting the read-retry
mode (i.e., voltage threshold).
For now, this patch always returns the flash to mode 0 (the default
mode) after a successful read-retry, according to the flowchart found in
Micron's datasheets. This may need to change in the future if it is
determined that eventually, mode 0 is insufficient for the majority of
the flash cells (and so for performance reasons, we should leave the
flash in mode 1, 2, etc.).

Write len 186 but return retlen 184
Write of 186 bytes at 0x072caff4 failed. returned -5, retlen 184
These errors exist only in 64-bit systems, not in 32-bit systems. After analysis, we
found that the left shift operation is wrong in map_word_load_partial. For instance:
unsigned char buf[3] ={0x9e,0x3a,0xea};
map_bankwidth(map) is 4;
for (i=0; i < 3; i++) {
int bitpos;
bitpos = (map_bankwidth(map)-1-i)*8;
orig.x[0] &= ~(0xff << bitpos);
orig.x[0] |= buf[i] << bitpos;
}
The value of orig.x[0] is expected to be 0x9e3aeaff, but in this situation(64-bit
System) we'll get the wrong value of 0xffffffff9e3aeaff due to the 64-bit sign
extension:
buf[i] is defined as "unsigned char" and the left-shift operation will convert it
to the type of "signed int", so when left-shift buf[i] by 24 bits, the final result
will get the wrong value: 0xffffffff9e3aeaff.
If the left-shift bits are less than 24, then sign extension will not occur. Whereas
the bankwidth of the nor flash we used is 4, therefore this BUG emerges.

In order to implement the NAND boot for some Freescale's chips, such as
imx23/imx28/imx50/imx6, we use a tool (called kobs-ng) to burn the uboot
and some metadata to nand chip. And the ROM code will use the metadata to
configrate the BCH, and to find the uboot.
The ECC information(ecc step size, ecc strength) which is used to configrure

The onfi spec tells us that if the nand chip's recommended ECC codeword

1.) Why add the ECC information to the nand_chip{} ?
Each nand chip has its requirement for the ECC correctability, such as
"4bit ECC for each 512Byte" or "40bit ECC for each 1024Byte".
This ECC info is very important to the nand controller, such as gpmi.
Take the Micron MT29F64G08CBABA for example, its geometry is
8KiB page size, 744 bytes oob size and it requires 40bit ECC per 1KiB.
If we do not provide the ECC info to the gpmi nand driver, it has to
calculate the ECC correctability itself. The gpmi driver will gets the 56bit
ECC for per 1KiB which is beyond its BCH's 40bit ecc capibility.
The gpmi will quits in this case. But in actually, the gpmi can supports
this nand chip if it can get the right ECC info.
2.) about the new fields.
The @ecc_strength_ds stands for the ecc bits needed within the @ecc_step_ds.
The two fields should be set from the nand chip's datasheets.
For example:
"4bit ECC for each 512Byte" could be:
@ecc_strength_ds = 4, @ecc_step_ds = 512.
"40bit ECC for each 1024Byte" could be:
@ecc_strength_ds = 40, @ecc_step_ds = 1024.
3.) Why do not re-use the @strength and @size in the nand_ecc_ctrl{}?
The @strength and @size in nand_ecc_ctrl{} is used by the nand controller
driver, while the @ecc_strength_ds and @ecc_step_ds are get from the datasheet.

NAND_BBT_SCANEMPTY is a strange, badly-supported option with omap as its

NAND_BBT_SCANEMPTY was likely used by accident in omap2[1]. And anyway,
omap2 doesn't scan the chip for bad blocks (courtesy of
NAND_SKIP_BBTSCAN), and so its use of this option is irrelevant.
This patch drops the NAND_BBT_SCANEMPTY option.

Instead, just move some of the BBT code into a new nand_markbad_bbt()
