Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"The rework of backlight interface selection API from Hans de Goede
stands out from the number of commits and the number of affected
places perspective. The cpufreq core fixes from Viresh Kumar are
quite significant too as far as the number of commits goes and because
they should reduce CPU online/offline overhead quite a bit in the
majority of cases.
From the new featues point of view, the ACPICA update (to upstream
revision 20150515) adding support for new ACPI 6 material to ACPICA is
the one that matters the most as some new significant features will be
based on it going forward. Also included is an update of the ACPI
device power management core to follow ACPI 6 (which in turn reflects
the Windows' device PM implementation), a PM core extension to support
wakeup interrupts in a more generic way and support for the ACPI _CCA
device configuration object.
The rest is mostly fixes and cleanups all over and some documentation
updates, including new DT bindings for Operating Performance Points.
There is one fix for a regression introduced in the 4.1 cycle, but it
adds quite a number of lines of code, it wasn't really ready before

This is a preparation patch for the backlight interface selection logic
cleanup, there are 2 reasons to not always build the video_detect code
into the kernel:
1) In order for the video_detect.c to also deal with / select native
backlight interfaces on win8 systems, instead of doing this in video.c
where it does not belong, video_detect.c needs to call into the backlight
class code. Which cannot be done if it is builtin and the blacklight class
is not.
2) Currently all the platform/x86 drivers which have quirks to prefer
the vendor driver over acpi-video call acpi_video_unregister_backlight()
to remove the acpi-video backlight interface, this logic really belongs
in video_detect.c, which will cause video_detect.c to depend on symbols of
video.c and video.c already depends on video_detect.c symbols, so they
really need to be a single module.
Note that this commits make 2 changes so as to maintain 100% kernel
commandline compatibility:
1) The __setup call for the acpi_backlight= handling is moved to
acpi/util.c as __setup may only be used by code which is alwasy builtin
2) video.c is renamed to acpi_video.c so that it can be combined with
video_detect.c into video.ko
This commit also makes changes to drivers/platform/x86/Kconfig to ensure
that drivers which use acpi_video_backlight_support() from video_detect.c,
will not be built-in when acpi_video is not built in. This also changes
some "select" uses to "depends on" to avoid dependency loops.

acpi_osi_is_win8 needs access to acpi_gbl_osi_data which is not exported,
so move it to osl.c. Alternatively we could export acpi_gbl_osi_data but
that seems undesirable.
This allows video_detect.c to be build as a module, besides that
acpi_osi_is_win8() is something which does not really belong in
video_detect.c in the first place.

This allows video_detect.c to be build as a module, this is a preparation
patch for the backlight interface selection logic cleanup.
Note this commit also causes acpi_is_video_device() to always be build

building depend on CONFIG_ACPI_VIDEO.

Commit b9a5e5e18f "ACPI / init: Fix the ordering of
acpi_reserve_resources()" overlooked the fact that the memory
and/or I/O regions reserved by acpi_reserve_resources() may
conflict with those reserved by the PNP "system" driver.
If that conflict actually takes place, it causes the reservations
made by the "system" driver to fail while before commit b9a5e5e18f
all reservations made by it and by acpi_reserve_resources() would be
successful. In turn, that allows the resources that haven't been
reserved by the "system" driver to be used by others (e.g. PCI) which
sometimes leads to functional problems (up to and including boot
failures).
To fix that issue, introduce a common resource reservation routine,
acpi_reserve_region(), to be used by both acpi_reserve_resources()
and the "system" driver, that will track all resources reserved by
it and avoid making conflicting requests.

This patch implements support for ACPI _CCA object, which is introduced in
ACPIv5.1, can be used for specifying device DMA coherency attribute.
The parsing logic traverses device namespace to parse coherency
information, and stores it in acpi_device_flags. Then uses it to call
arch_setup_dma_ops() when creating each device enumerated in DSDT
during ACPI scan.
This patch also introduces acpi_dma_is_coherent(), which provides
an interface for device drivers to check the coherency information
similarly to the of_dma_is_coherent().

Commit 73f7d1ca32 "ACPI / init: Run acpi_early_init() before
timekeeping_init()" moved the ACPI subsystem initialization,
including the ACPI mode enabling, to an earlier point in the
initialization sequence, to allow the timekeeping subsystem
use ACPI early. Unfortunately, that resulted in boot regressions
on some systems and the early ACPI initialization was moved toward
its original position in the kernel initialization code by commit
c4e1acbb35 "ACPI / init: Invoke early ACPI initialization later".
However, that turns out to be insufficient, as boot is still broken
on the Tyan S8812 mainboard.
To fix that issue, split the ACPI early initialization code into
two pieces so the majority of it still located in acpi_early_init()
and the part switching over the platform into the ACPI mode goes into
a new function, acpi_subsystem_init(), executed at the original early
ACPI initialization spot.
That fixes the Tyan S8812 boot problem, but still allows ACPI
tables to be loaded earlier which is useful to the EFI code in
efi_enter_virtual_mode().

ACPI specification knows two types of GPIOs: GpioIo and GpioInt. The latter
is used to describe that a given device interrupt line is connected to a
specific GPIO pin. Typical ACPI _CRS entry for such device looks like
below:
Name (_CRS, ResourceTemplate ()
{
I2cSerialBus (0x004A, ControllerInitiated, 0x00061A80,
AddressingMode7Bit, "\\_SB.PCI0.I2C6",
0x00, ResourceConsumer)
GpioIo (Exclusive, PullDefault, 0x0000, 0x0000,
IoRestrictionOutputOnly, "\\_SB.GPO0",
0x00, ResourceConsumer)
{
0x004B
}
GpioInt (Level, ActiveLow, Shared, PullDefault, 0x0000,
"\\_SB.GPO0", 0x00, ResourceConsumer)
{
0x004C
}
})
Currently drivers need to request a GPIO corresponding to the right GpioInt
and then translate that to Linux IRQ number. This adds unnecessary lines of
boiler-plate code.
We can ease this a bit by introducing acpi_dev_gpio_irq_get() analogous to
of_irq_get(). This function translates given GpioInt resource under the
device in question to the suitable Linux IRQ number.

ACPI for arm64 has been in development for a while now and hardware
has been available that can boot with either FDT or ACPI tables. This
has been made possible by both changes to the ACPI spec to cater for
ARM-based machines (known as "hardware-reduced" in ACPI parlance) but
also a Linaro-driven effort to get this supported on top of the Linux
kernel. This pull request is the result of that work.
These changes allow us to initialise the CPUs, interrupt controller,
and timers via ACPI tables, with memory information and cmdline coming
from EFI. We don't support a hybrid ACPI/FDT scheme. Of course,
there is still plenty of work to do (a serial console would be nice!)
but I expect that to happen on a per-driver basis after this core
series has been merged.
Anyway, the diff stat here is fairly horrible, but splitting this up
and merging it via all the different subsystems would have been
extremely painful. Instead, we've got all the relevant Acks in place
and I've not seen anything other than trivial (Kconfig) conflicts in
-next (for completeness, I've included my resolution below). Nearly
half of the insertions fall under Documentation/.
So, we'll see how this goes. Right now, it all depends on EXPERT and
I fully expect people to use FDT by default for the immediate future"

pointed to by the device's firmware node pointer.
(2) If both the primary and secondary firmware nodes are present,
the primary one will be pointed to by the device's firmware
node pointer, while the secondary one will be pointed to by the
primary node's secondary pointer.
(3) If one of these nodes is removed (by calling one of the new
nelpers with NULL as the second argument), the other one will
be preserved.
Make ACPI use set_primary_fwnode() for attaching its firmware nodes
to devices.

CPU hardware ID (phys_id) is defined as u32 in structure acpi_processor,
but phys_id is used as int in acpi processor driver, so it will lead to
some inconsistence for the drivers.
Furthermore, to cater for ACPI arch ports that implement 64 bits CPU
ids a generic CPU physical id type is required.
So introduce typedef u32 phys_cpuid_t in a common file, and introduce
a macro PHYS_CPUID_INVALID as (phys_cpuid_t)(-1) if it's not defined
by other archs, this will solve the inconsistence in acpi processor driver,
and will prepare for the ACPI on ARM64 for the 64 bit CPU hardware ID

Now that the ACPI companions of devices are represented by pointers
to struct fwnode_handle, it is not quite efficient to check whether

There are two benefits from that. First, the somewhat ugly and

struct fwnode_handle pointer can be used in the future to point

Currently ACPI, PCI and pnp all implement the same resource list
management with different data structure. We need to transfer from
one data structure into another when passing resources from one
subsystem into another subsystem. So move struct resource_list_entry
from ACPI into resource core and rename it as resource_entry,
then it could be reused by different subystems and avoid the data
structure conversion.

ACPI 5.0 introduces _DEP (Operation Region Dependencies) to designate
device objects that OSPM should assign a higher priority in start
ordering due to future operation region accesses.
On Asus T100TA, ACPI battery info are read from a I2C slave device via
I2C operation region. Before I2C operation region handler is installed,
battery _STA always returns 0. There is a _DEP method of designating
start order under battery device node.
This patch is to implement _DEP feature to fix battery issue on the
Asus T100TA. Introducing acpi_dep_list and adding dep_unmet count
in struct acpi_device. During ACPI namespace scan, create struct
acpi_dep_data for a valid pair of master (device pointed to by _DEP)/
slave(device with _DEP), record master's and slave's ACPI handle in
it and put it into acpi_dep_list. The dep_unmet count will increase
by one if there is a device under its _DEP. Driver's probe() should
return EPROBE_DEFER when find dep_unmet is larger than 0. When I2C
operation region handler is installed, remove all struct acpi_dep_data
on the acpi_dep_list whose master is pointed to I2C host controller
and decrease slave's dep_unmet. When dep_unmet decreases to 0, all
_DEP conditions are met and then do acpi_bus_attach() for the device
in order to resolve battery _STA issue on the Asus T100TA.

The size_prop argument of the recently added function
acpi_dev_get_property_reference() is not used by the only current
caller of that function and is very unlikely to be used at any time
going forward.
Namely, for a property whose value is a list of items each containing
a references to a device object possibly accompanied by some integers,
the number of items in the list can always be computed as the number
of elements of type ACPI_TYPE_LOCAL_REFERENCE in the property package.
Thus it should never be necessary to provide an additional "cells"
property with a value equal to the number of items in that list. It
also should never be necessary to provide a "cells" property specifying
how many integers are supposed to be following each reference.
For this reason, drop the size_prop argument from
acpi_dev_get_property_reference() and update its caller accordingly.

Provide a way for device drivers using GPIOs described by ACPI
GpioIo resources in _CRS to tell the GPIO subsystem what names
(connection IDs) to associate with specific GPIO pins defined
in there.
To do that, a driver needs to define a mapping table as a
NULL-terminated array of struct acpi_gpio_mapping objects
that each contain a name, a pointer to an array of line data
(struct acpi_gpio_params) objects and the size of that array.
Each struct acpi_gpio_params object consists of three fields,
crs_entry_index, line_index, active_low, representing the index of
the target GpioIo()/GpioInt() resource in _CRS starting from zero,
the index of the target line in that resource starting from zero,
and the active-low flag for that line, respectively.
Next, the mapping table needs to be passed as the second
argument to acpi_dev_add_driver_gpios() that will register it with
the ACPI device object pointed to by its first argument. That
should be done in the driver's .probe() routine.
On removal, the driver should unregister its GPIO mapping table
by calling acpi_dev_remove_driver_gpios() on the ACPI device
object where that table was previously registered.
Included are fixes from Mika Westerberg.

fwnode_handle (new type) that allows a device description object

Add a uniform interface by which device drivers can request device
properties from the platform firmware by providing a property name
and the corresponding data type. The purpose of it is to help to
write portable code that won't depend on any particular platform
firmware interface.
The following general helper functions are added:
device_property_present()
device_property_read_u8()
device_property_read_u16()
device_property_read_u32()
device_property_read_u64()
device_property_read_string()

device_property_read_u16_array()
device_property_read_u32_array()
device_property_read_u64_array()

The first one allows the caller to check if the given property is
present. The next 5 of them allow single-valued properties of
various types to be retrieved in a uniform way. The remaining 5 are
for reading properties with multiple values (arrays of either numbers

Device Tree is used in many embedded systems to describe the system
configuration to the OS. It supports attaching properties or name-value
pairs to the devices it describe. With these properties one can pass
additional information to the drivers that would not be available
otherwise.
ACPI is another configuration mechanism (among other things) typically
seen, but not limited to, x86 machines. ACPI allows passing arbitrary
data from methods but there has not been mechanism equivalent to Device
Tree until the introduction of _DSD in the recent publication of the
ACPI 5.1 specification.
In order to facilitate ACPI usage in systems where Device Tree is
typically used, it would be beneficial to standardize a way to retrieve
Device Tree style properties from ACPI devices, which is what we do in
this patch.
If a given device described in ACPI namespace wants to export properties it
must implement _DSD method (Device Specific Data, introduced with ACPI 5.1)
that returns the properties in a package of packages. For example:
Name (_DSD, Package () {
ToUUID("daffd814-6eba-4d8c-8a91-bc9bbf4aa301"),
Package () {
Package () {"name1", <VALUE1>},
Package () {"name2", <VALUE2>},
...
}
})
The UUID reserved for properties is daffd814-6eba-4d8c-8a91-bc9bbf4aa301
and is documented in the ACPI 5.1 companion document called "_DSD
Implementation Guide" [1], [2].
We add several helper functions that can be used to extract these
properties and convert them to different Linux data types.
The ultimate goal is that we only have one device property API that
retrieves the requested properties from Device Tree or from ACPI
transparent to the caller.

This patch moves <acpi/acpi.h> out of CONFIG_ACPI condition so that all
ACPICA prototypes can be seen by the CONFIG_ACPI=n Linux kernel builds.
Note that we can do this because ACPICA has implemented stubs for all
ACPICA prototypes that are currently referenced by the Linux kernel.

The i2c operation region is defined under I2C1 scope. _BST method under
battery device BATC read battery status from the field "FCG0". The request
would be sent to i2c operation region handler.
This patch is to add i2c ACPI operation region support. Due to there are
only "Byte" and "Bytes" protocol access on the Asus T100TA, other protocols
have not been tested.
About RawBytes and RawProcessBytes protocol, they needs specific drivers to interpret
reference data from AML code according ACPI 5.0 SPEC(5.5.2.4.5.3.9 and 5.5.2.4.5.3.10).
So far, not found such case and will add when find real case.

ACPI can be used to enumerate PNP devices, but the code does not
handle this in the right way currently. Namely, if an ACPI device
object
1. Has a _CRS method,
2. Has an identification of
"three capital characters followed by four hex digits",
3. Is not in the excluded IDs list,
it will be enumerated to PNP bus (that is, a PNP device object will
be create for it). This means that, actually, the PNP bus type is
used as the default bus type for enumerating _HID devices in ACPI.
However, more and more _HID devices need to be enumerated to the
platform bus instead (that is, platform device objects need to be
created for them). As a result, the device ID list in acpi_platform.c
is used to enforce creating platform device objects rather than PNP
device objects for matching devices. That list has been continuously
growing recently, unfortunately, and it is pretty much guaranteed to
grow even more in the future.
To address that problem it is better to enumerate _HID devices
as platform devices by default. To this end, change the way of
enumerating PNP devices by adding a PNP ACPI scan handler that
will use a device ID list to create PNP devices for the ACPI
device objects whose device IDs are present in that list.
The initial device ID list in the PNP ACPI scan handler contains
all of the pnp_device_id strings from all the existing PNP drivers,
so this change should be transparent to the PNP core and all of the
PNP drivers. Still, in the future it should be possible to reduce
its size by converting PNP drivers that need not be PNP for any
technical reasons into platform drivers.

CONFIG_DYNAMIC_DEBUG is defined, contrary to the documented

The bug was introduced by commit fbfddae696 ("ACPI: Add

* acpi-modules:
platform: introduce OF style 'modalias' support for platform bus
ACPI: fix module autoloading for ACPI enumerated devices
ACPI: add module autoloading support for ACPI enumerated devices
ACPI: fix create_modalias() return value handling
An ACPI enumerated device may have its compatible id strings.
To support the compatible ACPI ids (acpi_device->pnp.ids),
we introduced acpi_driver_match_device() to match
the driver->acpi_match_table and acpi_device->pnp.ids.
For those drivers, MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(acpi, xxx) is used to
exports the driver module alias in the format of
"acpi:device_compatible_ids".
But in the mean time, the current code does not export the
ACPI compatible strings as part of the module_alias for the
ACPI enumerated devices, which will break the module autoloading.
Take the following piece of code for example,
static const struct acpi_device_id xxx_acpi_match[] = {
{ "INTABCD", 0 },
{ }
};
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(acpi, xxx_acpi_match);
If this piece of code is used in a platform driver for
an ACPI enumerated platform device, the platform driver module_alias
is "acpi:INTABCD", but the uevent attribute of its platform device node
is "platform:INTABCD:00" (PREFIX:platform_device->name).
If this piece of code is used in an i2c driver for an ACPI enumerated
i2c device, the i2c driver module_alias is "acpi:INTABCD", but
the uevent of its i2c device node is "i2c:INTABCD:00" (PREFIX:i2c_client->name).
If this piece of code is used in an spi driver for an ACPI enumerated
spi device, the spi driver module_alias is "acpi:INTABCD", but
the uevent of its spi device node is "spi:INTABCD" (PREFIX:spi_device->modalias).
The reason why the module autoloading is not broken for now is that
the uevent file of the ACPI device node is "acpi:INTABCD".
Thus it is the ACPI device node creation that loads the platform/i2c/spi driver.
So this is a problem that will affect us the day when the ACPI bus
is removed from device model.
This patch introduces two new APIs,
one for exporting ACPI ids in uevent MODALIAS field,
and another for exporting ACPI ids in device' modalias sysfs attribute.
For any bus that supports ACPI enumerated devices, it needs to invoke
these two functions for their uevent and modalias attribute.

To avoid build problems and breaking dependencies between ACPI header
files, <acpi/acpi.h> should not be included directly by code outside
of the ACPI core subsystem. However, that is possible if
<linux/acpi_io.h> is included, because that file contains
a direct inclusion of <acpi/acpi.h>.
For this reason, remove the direct <acpi/acpi.h> inclusion from
<linux/acpi_io.h>, move that file from include/linux/ to include/acpi/
and make <linux/acpi.h> include it for CONFIG_ACPI set along with the
other ACPI header files. Accordingly, Remove the inclusions of
<linux/acpi_io.h> from everywhere.
Of course, that causes the contents of the new <acpi/acpi_io.h> file
to be available for CONFIG_ACPI set only, so intel_opregion.o that
depends on it should also depend on CONFIG_ACPI (and it really should
not be compiled for CONFIG_ACPI unset anyway).

return value of acpi_find_child_device() directly as the second
argument to it. Update its users to pass struct acpi_device
pointers instead of ACPI handles to it.
This allows some unnecessary acpi_bus_get_device() calls to be
avoided.

struct acpi_device fields are only available when CONFIG_ACPI is set. We may
find use for dev_name(&adev->dev) in generic code that is build also without
CONFIG_ACPI is set but currently this requires #ifdef CONFIG_ACPI churn.
Provide here an accessor that returns dev_name of embedded struct device dev
in struct acpi_device or NULL depending on CONFIG_ACPI setting.

Modify struct acpi_dev_node to contain a pointer to struct acpi_device
associated with the given device object (that is, its ACPI companion
device) instead of an ACPI handle corresponding to it. Introduce two
new macros for manipulating that pointer in a CONFIG_ACPI-safe way,
ACPI_COMPANION() and ACPI_COMPANION_SET(), and rework the
ACPI_HANDLE() macro to take the above changes into account.
Drop the ACPI_HANDLE_SET() macro entirely and rework its users to
use ACPI_COMPANION_SET() instead. For some of them who used to
pass the result of acpi_get_child() directly to ACPI_HANDLE_SET()
introduce a helper routine acpi_preset_companion() doing an
equivalent thing.
The main motivation for doing this is that there are things
represented by struct acpi_device objects that don't have valid
ACPI handles (so called fixed ACPI hardware features, such as
power and sleep buttons) and we would like to create platform
device objects for them and "glue" them to their ACPI companions
in the usual way (which currently is impossible due to the
lack of valid ACPI handles). However, there are more reasons
why it may be useful.
First, struct acpi_device pointers allow of much better type checking
than void pointers which are ACPI handles, so it should be more
difficult to write buggy code using modified struct acpi_dev_node
and the new macros. Second, the change should help to reduce (over
time) the number of places in which the result of ACPI_HANDLE() is
passed to acpi_bus_get_device() in order to obtain a pointer to the
struct acpi_device associated with the given "physical" device,
because now that pointer is returned by ACPI_COMPANION() directly.
Finally, the change should make it easier to write generic code that
will build both for CONFIG_ACPI set and unset without adding explicit
compiler directives to it.

We attempted to address a regression introduced by commit a57f7f9
(ACPICA: Add Windows8/Server2012 string for _OSI method.) after which
ACPI video backlight support doesn't work on a number of systems,
because the relevant AML methods in the ACPI tables in their BIOSes
become useless after the BIOS has been told that the OS is compatible
with Windows 8. That problem is tracked by the bug entry at:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51231
Commit 8c5bd7a (ACPI / video / i915: No ACPI backlight if firmware
expects Windows 8) introduced for this purpose essentially prevented
the ACPI backlight support from being used if the BIOS had been told
that the OS was compatible with Windows 8 and the i915 driver was
loaded, in which case the backlight would always be handled by i915.
Unfortunately, however, that turned out to cause problems with
backlight to appear on multiple systems with symptoms indicating that
i915 was unable to control the backlight on those systems as
expected.
For this reason, revert commit 8c5bd7a, but leave the function
acpi_video_backlight_quirks() introduced by it, because another
commit on top of it uses that function.

According to Matthew Garrett, "Windows 8 leaves backlight control up
to individual graphics drivers rather than making ACPI calls itself.
There's plenty of evidence to suggest that the Intel driver for
Windows [8] doesn't use the ACPI interface, including the fact that
it's broken on a bunch of machines when the OS claims to support
Windows 8. The simplest thing to do appears to be to disable the
ACPI backlight interface on these systems".
There's a problem with that approach, however, because simply
avoiding to register the ACPI backlight interface if the firmware
calls _OSI for Windows 8 may not work in the following situations:
(1) The ACPI backlight interface actually works on the given system
and the i915 driver is not loaded (e.g. another graphics driver
is used).
(2) The ACPI backlight interface doesn't work on the given system,
but there is a vendor platform driver that will register its
own, equally broken, backlight interface if not prevented from
doing so by the ACPI subsystem.
Therefore we need to allow the ACPI backlight interface to be
registered until the i915 driver is loaded which then will unregister
it if the firmware has called _OSI for Windows 8 (or will register
the ACPI video driver without backlight support if not already
present).
For this reason, introduce an alternative function for registering
ACPI video, acpi_video_register_with_quirks(), that will check
whether or not the ACPI video driver has already been registered
and whether or not the backlight Windows 8 quirk has to be applied.
If the quirk has to be applied, it will block the ACPI backlight
support and either unregister the backlight interface if the ACPI
video driver has already been registered, or register the ACPI
video driver without the backlight interface otherwise. Make
the i915 driver use acpi_video_register_with_quirks() instead of
acpi_video_register() in i915_driver_load().
This change is based on earlier patches from Matthew Garrett,
Chun-Yi Lee and Seth Forshee and includes a fix from Aaron Lu's.

It turns out movable_map has some problems, and it breaks several things
1. numa_init is called several times, NOT just for srat. so those
nodes_clear(numa_nodes_parsed)
memset(&numa_meminfo, 0, sizeof(numa_meminfo))
can not be just removed. Need to consider sequence is: numaq, srat, amd, dummy.
and make fall back path working.
2. simply split acpi_numa_init to early_parse_srat.
a. that early_parse_srat is NOT called for ia64, so you break ia64.
b. for (i = 0; i < MAX_LOCAL_APIC; i++)
set_apicid_to_node(i, NUMA_NO_NODE)
still left in numa_init. So it will just clear result from early_parse_srat.
it should be moved before that....
c. it breaks ACPI_TABLE_OVERIDE...as the acpi table scan is moved
early before override from INITRD is settled.
3. that patch TITLE is total misleading, there is NO x86 in the title,
but it changes critical x86 code. It caused x86 guys did not
pay attention to find the problem early. Those patches really should
be routed via tip/x86/mm.
4. after that commit, following range can not use movable ram:
a. real_mode code.... well..funny, legacy Node0 [0,1M) could be hot-removed?
b. initrd... it will be freed after booting, so it could be on movable...
c. crashkernel for kdump...: looks like we can not put kdump kernel above 4G
anymore.
d. init_mem_mapping: can not put page table high anymore.
e. initmem_init: vmemmap can not be high local node anymore. That is
not good.
If node is hotplugable, the mem related range like page table and
vmemmap could be on the that node without problem and should be on that
node.
We have workaround patch that could fix some problems, but some can not
be fixed.
So just remove that offending commit and related ones including:
f7210e6c4a ("mm/memblock.c: use CONFIG_HAVE_MEMBLOCK_NODE_MAP to
protect movablecore_map in memblock_overlaps_region().")
01a178a94e ("acpi, memory-hotplug: support getting hotplug info from
SRAT")
27168d38fa ("acpi, memory-hotplug: extend movablemem_map ranges to
the end of node")
e8d1955258 ("acpi, memory-hotplug: parse SRAT before memblock is
ready")
fb06bc8e5f ("page_alloc: bootmem limit with movablecore_map")
42f47e27e7 ("page_alloc: make movablemem_map have higher priority")
6981ec3114 ("page_alloc: introduce zone_movable_limit[] to keep
movable limit for nodes")
34b71f1e04 ("page_alloc: add movable_memmap kernel parameter")
4d59a75125 ("x86: get pg_data_t's memory from other node")
Later we should have patches that will make sure kernel put page table
and vmemmap on local node ram instead of push them down to node0. Also
need to find way to put other kernel used ram to local node ram.

On linux, the pages used by kernel could not be migrated. As a result,
if a memory range is used by kernel, it cannot be hot-removed. So if we
want to hot-remove memory, we should prevent kernel from using it.
The way now used to prevent this is specify a memory range by
movablemem_map boot option and set it as ZONE_MOVABLE.
But when the system is booting, memblock will allocate memory, and
reserve the memory for kernel. And before we parse SRAT, and know the
node memory ranges, memblock is working. And it may allocate memory in
ranges to be set as ZONE_MOVABLE. This memory can be used by kernel,
and never be freed.
So, let's parse SRAT before memblock is called first. And it is early
enough.
The first call of memblock_find_in_range_node() is in:
setup_arch()
|-->setup_real_mode()
so, this patch add a function early_parse_srat() to parse SRAT, and call
it before setup_real_mode() is called.
NOTE:
1) early_parse_srat() is called before numa_init(), and has initialized
numa_meminfo. So DO NOT clear numa_nodes_parsed in numa_init() and DO
NOT zero numa_meminfo in numa_init(), otherwise we will lose memory
numa info.
2) I don't know why using count of memory affinities parsed from SRAT
as a return value in original acpi_numa_init(). So I add a static
variable srat_mem_cnt to remember this count and use it as the return
value of the new acpi_numa_init()

"This is a patchset which didn't make the last merge window. It adds a
debugging capability to feed ACPI tables via the initramfs.
On a grander scope, it formalizes using the initramfs protocol for
feeding arbitrary blobs which need to be accessed early to the kernel:
they are fed first in the initramfs blob (lots of bootloaders can
concatenate this at boot time, others can use a single file) in an
uncompressed cpio archive using filenames starting with "kernel/".
The ACPI maintainers requested that this patchset be fed via the x86

This patch introduces acpi_handle_<level>(), where <level> is
a kernel message level such as err/warn/info, to support improved
logging messages for ACPI, esp. hot-plug operations.
acpi_handle_<level>() appends "ACPI" prefix and ACPI object path
to the messages. This improves diagnosis of hotplug operations
since an error message in a log file identifies an object that
caused an issue. This interface acquires the global namespace
mutex to obtain an object path. In interrupt context, it shows
the object path as <n/a>.
acpi_handle_<level>() takes acpi_handle as an argument, which is
passed to ACPI hotplug notify handlers from the ACPICA. Therefore,
it is always available unlike other kernel objects, such as device.
For example:
acpi_handle_err(handle, "Device don't exist, dropping EJECT\n");
logs an error message like this at KERN_ERR.
ACPI: \_SB_.SCK4.CPU4: Device don't exist, dropping EJECT
ACPI hot-plug drivers can use acpi_handle_<level>() when they need
to identify a target ACPI object path in their messages, such as
error cases. The usage model is similar to dev_<level>().
acpi_handle_<level>() can be used when a device is not created or
is invalid during hot-plug operations. ACPI object path is also
consistent on the platform, unlike device name that gets incremented
over hotplug operations.
ACPI drivers should use dev_<level>() when a device object is valid.
Device name provides more user friendly information, and avoids
acquiring the global ACPI namespace mutex. ACPI drivers also
continue to use pr_<level>() when they do not need to specify device
information, such as boot-up messages.
Note: ACPI_[WARNING|INFO|ERROR]() are intended for the ACPICA and
are not associated with the kernel message level.

Currently, whoever wants to use ACPI device resources has to call
acpi_walk_resources() to browse the buffer returned by the _CRS
method for the given device and create filters passed to that
routine to apply to the individual resource items. This generally
is cumbersome, time-consuming and inefficient. Moreover, it may
be problematic if resource conflicts need to be resolved, because
the different users of _CRS will need to do that in a consistent
way. However, if there are resource conflicts, the ACPI core
should be able to resolve them centrally instead of relying on
various users of acpi_walk_resources() to handle them correctly
together.
For this reason, introduce a new function, acpi_dev_get_resources(),
that can be used by subsystems to obtain a list of struct resource
objects corresponding to the ACPI device resources returned by
_CRS and, if necessary, to apply additional preprocessing routine
to the ACPI resources before converting them to the struct resource
format.
Make the ACPI code that creates platform device objects use
acpi_dev_get_resources() for resource processing instead of executing
acpi_walk_resources() twice by itself, which causes it to be much
more straightforward and easier to follow.
In the future, acpi_dev_get_resources() can be extended to meet
the needs of the ACPI PNP subsystem and other users of _CRS in
the kernel.

Some bus types don't support power management natively, but generally
there may be device nodes in ACPI tables corresponding to the devices
whose bus types they are (under ACPI 5 those bus types may be SPI,
I2C and platform). If that is the case, standard ACPI power
management may be applied to those devices, although currently the
kernel has no means for that.
For this reason, provide a set of routines that may be used as power
management callbacks for such devices. This may be done in three
different ways.
(1) Device drivers handling the devices in question may run
acpi_dev_pm_attach() in their .probe() routines, which (on
success) will cause the devices to be added to the general ACPI
PM domain and ACPI power management will be used for them going
forward. Then, acpi_dev_pm_detach() may be used to remove the
devices from the general ACPI PM domain if ACPI power management
is not necessary for them any more.
(2) The devices' subsystems may use acpi_subsys_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_subsys_runtime_resume(), acpi_subsys_prepare(),
acpi_subsys_suspend_late(), acpi_subsys_resume_early() as their
power management callbacks in the same way as the general ACPI
PM domain does that.
(3) The devices' drivers may execute acpi_dev_suspend_late(),
acpi_dev_resume_early(), acpi_dev_runtime_suspend(),
acpi_dev_runtime_resume() from their power management callbacks
as appropriate, if that's absolutely necessary, but it is not
recommended to do that, because such drivers may not work
without ACPI support as a result.

In the current implementation acpi_handle is passed as a parameter
of .add/.remove interface. However, the acpi_pci_root structure

enables us to avoid some useless lookups in each acpi_pci_driver.
Note: This changes interfaces used by acpi_pci_register_driver(), an

Added acpi_evaluate_hotplug_opt(). All ACPI hotplug handlers must call
this function when evaluating _OST for hotplug operations. If the
platform does not support _OST, this function returns AE_NOT_FOUND and
has no effect on the platform.
ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is defined when all relevant ACPI hotplug operations,
such as CPU, memory and container hotplug, are enabled. This assures
consistent behavior among the hotplug operations with regarding the
_OST support. When ACPI_HOTPLUG_OST is not defined, this function is
a no-op.
ACPI PCI hotplug is not enhanced to support _OST at this time since it
is a legacy method being replaced by PCIe native hotplug. _OST support
for ACPI PCI hotplug may be added in future if necessary.
Some platforms may require the OS to support _OST in order to support
ACPI hotplug operations. For example, if a platform has the management
console where user can request a hotplug operation from, this _OST
support would be required for the management console to show the result
of the hotplug request to user.
Added macro definitions of _OST source events and status codes.
Also renamed OSC_SB_CPUHP_OST_SUPPORT to OSC_SB_HOTPLUG_OST_SUPPORT
since this _OSC bit is not specific to CPU hotplug. This bit is
defined in Table 6-147 of ACPI 5.0 as follows.

Some firmware will access memory in ACPI NVS region via APEI. That
is, instructions in APEI ERST/EINJ table will read/write ACPI NVS
region. The original resource conflict checking in APEI code will
check memory/ioport accessed by APEI via general resource management
mechanism. But ACPI NVS region is marked as busy already, so that the
false resource conflict will prevent APEI ERST/EINJ to work.
To fix this, this patch record ACPI NVS regions, so that we can avoid
request resources for memory region inside it.

If the kernel has requested control of the SHPC native hotplug
feature for a given root bridge, the acpiphp driver should not try
to handle that root bridge and it should leave it to shpchp.
Failing to do so causes problems to happen if shpchp is loaded
and unloaded before loading acpiphp (ACPI-based hotplug won't work
in that case anyway).
To address this issue make find_root_bridges() ignore PCI root
bridges with SHPC native hotplug enabled and make add_bridge()
return error code if SHPC native hotplug is enabled for the given
root bridge. This causes acpiphp to refuse to load if SHPC native
hotplug is enabled for all root bridges and to refuse binding to
the root bridges with SHPC native hotplug enabled.

In APEI firmware first mode, hardware error is reported by hardware to
firmware firstly, then firmware reports the error to Linux in a GHES
error record via POLL/SCI/IRQ/NMI etc.
This may result in some issues if OS has no full APEI support. So
some firmware implementation will work in a back-compatible mode by
default. Where firmware will only notify OS in old-fashion, without
GHES record. For example, for a fatal hardware error, only NMI is
signaled, no GHES record.
To gain full APEI power on these machines, APEI bit in generic _OSC
call can be specified to tell firmware that Linux has full APEI
support. This patch adds the APEI bit support in generic _OSC call.

Commit ca9b600be3 ("ACPI / PM: Make suspend_nvs_save() use
acpi_os_map_memory()") attempted to prevent the code in osl.c and nvs.c
from using different ioremap() variants by making the latter use
acpi_os_map_memory() for mapping the NVS pages. However, that also
requires acpi_os_unmap_memory() to be used for unmapping them, which
causes synchronize_rcu() to be executed many times in a row
unnecessarily and introduces substantial delays during resume on some
systems.
Instead of using acpi_os_map_memory() for mapping the NVS pages in nvs.c
introduce acpi_os_ioremap() calling ioremap_cache() and make the code in
both osl.c and nvs.c use it.

commit b0ed7a91(ACPICA/ACPI: Add new host interfaces for _OSI suppor)
introduced a regression that _OSI string setup fails.
There are 2 paths to setup _OSI string.
DMI:
acpi_dmi_osi_linux -> set_osi_linux -> acpi_osi_setup -> copy _OSI
string to osi_setup_string
Boot command line:
acpi_osi_setup -> copy _OSI string to osi_setup_string
Later, acpi_osi_setup_late will be called to handle osi_setup_string.
If _OSI string is "Linux" or "!Linux", then the call path is,
acpi_osi_setup_late -> acpi_cmdline_osi_linux -> set_osi_linux ->
acpi_osi_setup -> copy _OSI string to osi_setup_string
This actually never installs _OSI string(acpi_install_interface not
called), but just copy the _OSI string to osi_setup_string.
This patch fixes the regression.

It is possible that the BIOS will not grant control of all _OSC
features requested via acpi_pci_osc_control_set(), so it is
recommended to negotiate the final set of _OSC features with the
query flag set before calling _OSC to request control of these
features.
To implement it, rework acpi_pci_osc_control_set() so that the caller
can specify the mask of _OSC control bits to negotiate and the mask
of _OSC control bits that are absolutely necessary to it. Then,
acpi_pci_osc_control_set() will run _OSC queries in a loop until
the mask of _OSC control bits returned by the BIOS is equal to the
mask passed to it. Also, before running the _OSC request
acpi_pci_osc_control_set() will check if the caller's required
control bits are present in the final mask.
Using this mechanism we will be able to avoid situations in which the
BIOS doesn't grant control of certain _OSC features, because they
depend on some other _OSC features that have not been requested.

(ACPI: Store NVS state even when entering suspend to RAM) caused the
ACPI suspend code save the NVS area during suspend and restore it
during resume unconditionally, although it is known that some systems
need to use acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs for hibernation to work. To allow
the affected systems to avoid saving and restoring the NVS area
during suspend to RAM and resume, introduce kernel command line
option acpi_sleep=nonvs and make acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs work as its
alias temporarily (add acpi_sleep=s4_nonvs to the feature removal

When the user passes the kernel parameter acpi_enforce_resources=lax,
the ACPI resources are no longer protected, so a native driver can
make use of them. In that case, we do not want the asus_atk0110 to be
loaded. Unfortunately, this driver loads automatically due to its
MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE, so the user ends up with two drivers loaded for
the same device - this is bad.
So I suggest that we prevent the asus_atk0110 driver from loading if
acpi_enforce_resources=lax.

The ACPI spec tells us that the firmware will reenable SCI_EN on resume.
Reality disagrees in some cases. The ACPI spec tells us that the only way
to set SCI_EN is via an SMM call.
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13745 shows us that doing so
may break machines. Tracing the ACPI calls made by Windows shows that it
unconditionally sets SCI_EN on resume with a direct register write, and
therefore the overwhelming probability is that everything is fine with
this behaviour.

In perverse acpi implementations the isa irqs are not identity mapped
to the first 16 gsi. Furthermore at least the extended interrupt
resource capability may return gsi's and not isa irqs. So since
what we get from acpi is a gsi teach acpi_get_overrride_irq to
operate on a gsi instead of an isa_irq.

There are a number of cases where the current code makes the assumption
that isa irqs identity map to the first 16 acpi global system intereupts.
In most instances that assumption is correct as that is the required
behaviour in dual i8259 mode and the default behavior in ioapic mode.
However there are some systems out there that take advantage of acpis
interrupt remapping for the isa irqs to have a completely different
mapping of isa_irq to gsi.
Introduce acpi_isa_irq_to_gsi to perform this mapping explicitly in the
code that needs it. Initially this will be just the current assumed
identity mapping to ensure it's introduction does not cause regressions.

APIC reported through Processor X2APIC structure (type-9 entry type) and all

ACPI defines a hardware signature. BIOS calculates the signature according to
hardware configure and if hardware changes while hibernated, the signature

Still, there may be systems on which this mechanism does not work correctly,

Fixed up conflicts in various files (arch/x86/kernel/setup_64.c,
arch/x86/pci/irq.c, arch/x86/pci/pci.h, drivers/acpi/sleep/main.c,
drivers/pci/pci.c, drivers/pci/pci.h, include/acpi/acpi_bus.h) from x86
and ACPI updates manually.
if acpi=off, acpi=noirq and pci=noacpi, we need to disable apic.

ACPI PM: Add possibility to change suspend sequence
There are some systems out there that don't work correctly with
our current suspend/hibernation code ordering. Provide a workaround
for these systems allowing them to pass 'acpi_sleep=old_ordering' in
the kernel command line so that it will use the pre-ACPI 2.0 ("old")
suspend code ordering.
Unfortunately, this requires us to add a platform hook to the
resuming of devices for recovering the platform in case one of the
device drivers' .suspend() routines returns error code. Namely,
ACPI 1.0 specifies that _PTS should be called before suspending
devices, but _WAK still should be called before resuming them in
order to undo the changes made by _PTS. However, if there is an
error during suspending devices, they are automatically resumed
without returning control to the PM core, so the _WAK has to be
called from within device_resume() in that cases.
The patch also reorders and refactors the ACPI suspend/hibernation
code to avoid duplication as far as reasonably possible.

Small ACPICA extension to be able to store the name of operation regions in osl.c later
In ACPI, AML can define accesses to IO ports and System Memory by Operation
Regions. Those are not registered as done by PNPACPI using resource templates
(and _CRS/_SRS methods).
The IO ports and System Memory regions may get accessed by arbitrary AML code.
When native drivers are accessing the same resources bad things can happen
(e.g. a critical shutdown temperature of 3000 C every 2 months or so).
It is not really possible to register the operation regions via
request_resource, as they often overlap with pnp or other resources (e.g.
statically setup IO resources below 0x100).
This approach stores all Operation Region declarations (IO and System Memory
only) at ACPI table parse time. It offers a similar functionality like
request_region and let drivers which are known to possibly use the same IO
ports and Memory which are also often used by ACPI (hwmon and i2c) check for
ACPI interference.
A boot parameter acpi_enforce_resources=strict/lax/no is provided, which
is default set to lax:
- strict: let conflicting drivers fail to load with an error message
- lax: let conflicting driver work normal with a warning message
- no: no functional change at all
Depending on the feedback and the kind of interferences we see, this
should be set to strict at later time.
Goal of this patch set is:
- Identify ACPI interferences in bug reports (very hard to reproduce
and to identify)
- Find BIOSes for that an ACPI driver should exist for specific HW
instead of a native one.
- stability in general
Provide acpi_check_{mem_}region.
Drivers can additionally check against possible ACPI interference by also
invoking this shortly before they call request_region.
If -EBUSY is returned, the driver must not load.
Use acpi_enforce_resources=strict/lax/no options to:
- strict: let conflicting drivers fail to load with an error message
- lax: let conflicting driver work normal with a warning message
- no: no functional change at all

The following is an implementation of the Windows Management
Instrumentation (WMI) ACPI interface mapper (PNP0C14).
What it does:
Parses the _WDG method and exports functions to process WMI method calls,
data block query/ set commands (both based on GUID) and does basic event
handling.
How: WMI presents an in kernel interface here (essentially, a minimal
wrapper around ACPI)
(const char *guid assume the 36 character ASCII representation of
a GUID - e.g. 67C3371D-95A3-4C37-BB61-DD47B491DAAB)
wmi_evaluate_method(const char *guid, u8 instance, u32 method_id,
const struct acpi_buffer *in, struct acpi_buffer *out)
wmi_query_block(const char *guid, u8 instance,
struct acpi_buffer *out)
wmi_set_block(const char *guid, u38 instance,
const struct acpi_buffer *in)
wmi_install_notify_handler(acpi_notify_handler handler);
wmi_remove_notify_handler(void);
wmi_get_event_data(u32 event, struct acpi_buffer *out)
wmi_has_guid(const char guid*)
wmi_has_guid() is a helper function to find if a GUID exists or not on the
system (a quick and easy way for WMI dependant drivers to see if the
the method/ block they want exists, since GUIDs are supposed to be unique).
Event handling - allow a WMI based driver to register a notifier handler
for each GUID with WMI. When a notification is sent to a GUID in WMI, the
handler registered with WMI is then called (it is left to the caller to
ask for the WMI event data associated with the GUID, if needed).
What it won't do:
Unicode - The MS article[1] calls for converting between ASCII and Unicode (or
vice versa) if a GUID is marked as "string". This is left up to the calling
driver.
Handle a MOF[1] - the WMI mapper just exports methods, data and events to
userspace. MOF handling is down to userspace.
Userspace interface - this will be added later.

ChangeLog
==
v1 (2007-10-02):
* Initial release
v2 (2007-10-05):
* Cleaned up code - split up super "wmi_evaluate_block" -> each external
symbol now handles its own ACPI calls, rather than handing off to
a "super" method (and in turn, is a lot simpler to read)
* Added a find_guid() symbol - return true if a given GUID exists on
the system
* wmi_* functions now return type acpi_status (since they are just
fancy wrappers around acpi_evaluate_object())
* Removed extra debug code
v3 (2007-10-27)
* More code clean up - now passes checkpatch.pl
* Change data block calls - ref MS spec, method ID is not required for
them, so drop it from the function parameters.
* Const'ify guid in the function call parameters.
* Fix _WDG buffer handling - copy the data to our own private structure.
* Change WMI from tristate to bool - otherwise the external functions are
not exported in linux/acpi.h if you try to build WMI as a module.
* Fix more flag comparisons.
* Add a maintainers entry - since I wrote this, I should take the blame
for it.
v4 (2007-10-30)
* Add missing brace from after fixing checkpatch errors.
* Rewrote event handling - allow external drivers to register with WMI to
handle WMI events
* Clean up flags and sanitise flag handling
v5 (2007-11-03)
* Add sysfs interface for userspace. Export events over netlink again.
* Remove module left overs, fully convert to built-in driver.
* Tweak in-kernel API to use u8 for instance, since this is what the GUID
blocks use (so instance cannot be greater than u8).
* Export wmi_get_event_data() for in kernel WMI drivers.
v6 (2007-11-07)
* Split out userspace into a different patch
v7 (2007-11-20)
* Fix driver to handle multiple PNP0C14 devices - store all GUIDs using
the kernel's built in list functions, and just keep adding to the list
every time we handle a PNP0C14 devices - GUIDs will always be unique,
and WMI callers do not know or care about different devices.
* Change WMI event handler registration to use its' own event handling
struct; we should not pass an acpi_handle down to any WMI based drivers
- they should be able to function with only the calls provided in WMI.
* Update my e-mail address
v8 (2007-11-28)
* Convert back to a module.
* Update Kconfig to default to building as a module.
* Remove an erroneous printk.
* Simply comments for string flag (since we now leave the handling to the
caller).
v9 (2007-12-07)
* Add back missing MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE for autoloading
* Checkpatch fixes
v10 (2007-12-12)
* Workaround broken GUIDs declared expensive without a WCxx method.
* Minor cleanups
v11 (2007-12-17)
* More fixing for broken GUIDs declared expensive without a WCxx method.
* Add basic EmbeddedControl region handling.
v12 (2007-12-18)
* Changed EC region handling code, as per Alexey's comments.
v13 (2007-12-27)
* Changed event handling so that we can have one event handler registered
per GUID, as per Matthew Garrett's suggestion.
v14 (2008-01-12)
* Remove ACPI debug statements
v15 (2008-02-01)
* Replace two remaining 'x == NULL' type tests with '!x'
v16 (2008-02-05)
* Change MAINTAINERS entry, as I am not, and never have been, paid to work
on WMI
* Remove 'default' line from Kconfig

ACPI tables follow a tree structure in memory.
The root of the tree is the RSDP (Root System Description Pointer).
To find the RSDP, the OS searches for the signature "RSD PTR "
in well known physical memory locations. Then the OS computes
a table checksum to verify that the signature is really part
of a valid table header.
Some systems have a proper signature but an invalid checksum;
followed elsewhere by a proper signature with valid checksum.
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9444
The Linux RSDP scanning code bailed out on those systems
and as a result they booted with ACPI disabled.
Fix this by deleting the Linux RSDP scanning code and
plugging in the ACPICA RSDP scanning code.

cpuidle: re-write
Some portions have been rewritten to make the code cleaner and lighter
weight. The following is a list of changes:
1.) the state name is now included in the sysfs interface
2.) detection, hotplug, and available state modifications are handled by
CPUIDLE drivers directly
3.) the CPUIDLE idle handler is only ever installed when at least one
cpuidle_device is enabled and ready
4.) the menu governor BM code no longer overflows
5.) the sysfs attributes are now printed as unsigned integers, avoiding
negative values
6.) a variety of other small cleanups
Also, Idle drivers are no longer swappable during runtime through the
CPUIDLE sysfs inteface. On i386 and x86_64 most idle handlers (e.g.
poll, mwait, halt, etc.) don't benefit from an infrastructure that
supports multiple states, so I think using a more general case idle
handler selection mechanism would be cleaner.

cpuidle: add the 'menu' governor
Here is my first take at implementing an idle PM governor that takes
full advantage of NO_HZ. I call it the 'menu' governor because it
considers the full list of idle states before each entry.
I've kept the implementation fairly simple. It attempts to guess the
next residency time and then chooses a state that would meet at least
the break-even point between power savings and entry cost. To this end,
it selects the deepest idle state that satisfies the following
constraints:
1. If the idle time elapsed since bus master activity was detected
is below a threshold (currently 20 ms), then limit the selection
to C2-type or above.
2. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
the expected time remaining until the next timer interrupt.
3. Do not choose a state with a break-even residency that exceeds
the elapsed time between the last pair of break events,
excluding timer interrupts.
This governor has an advantage over "ladder" governor because it
proactively checks how much time remains until the next timer interrupt
using the tick infrastructure. Also, it handles device interrupt
activity more intelligently by not including timer interrupts in break
event calculations. Finally, it doesn't make policy decisions using the
number of state entries, which can have variable residency times (NO_HZ
makes these potentially very large), and instead only considers sleep
time deltas.
The menu governor can be selected during runtime using the cpuidle sysfs
interface like so:
"echo "menu" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuidle/current_governor"

cpuidle: hang fix
Prevent hang on x86-64, when ACPI processor driver is added as a module on

x86-64 expects all idle handlers to enable interrupts before returning from

cpuidle_idle_call() confirm to this when there is no pm_idle_old.
Also, cpuidle look at the return values of attch_driver() and set

cpuidle take2: Core cpuidle infrastructure
Announcing 'cpuidle', a new CPU power management infrastructure to manage
idle CPUs in a clean and efficient manner.
cpuidle separates out the drivers that can provide support for multiple types
of idle states and policy governors that decide on what idle state to use
at run time.
A cpuidle driver can support multiple idle states based on parameters like
varying power consumption, wakeup latency, etc (ACPI C-states for example).
A cpuidle governor can be usage model specific (laptop, server,
laptop on battery etc).
Main advantage of the infrastructure being, it allows independent development
of drivers and governors and allows for better CPU power management.
A huge thanks to Adam Belay and Shaohua Li who were part of this mini-project
since its beginning and are greatly responsible for this patchset.
This patch:
Core cpuidle infrastructure.
Introduces a new abstraction layer for cpuidle:
* which manages drivers that can support multiple idles states. Drivers
can be generic or particular to specific hardware/platform
* allows pluging in multiple policy governors that can take idle state policy
decision
* The core also has a set of sysfs interfaces with which administrato can know
about supported drivers and governors and switch them at run time.

For NUMA emulation, our SLIT should represent the true NUMA topology of the
system but our proximity domain to node ID mapping needs to reflect the
emulated state.
When NUMA emulation has successfully setup fake nodes on the system, a new
function, acpi_fake_nodes() is called. This function determines the proximity
domain (_PXM) for each true node found on the system. It then finds which
emulated nodes have been allocated on this true node as determined by its
starting address. The node ID to PXM mapping is changed so that each fake
node ID points to the PXM of the true node that it is located on.
If the machine failed to register a SLIT, then we assume there is no special
requirement for emulated node affinity so we use the default LOCAL_DISTANCE,
which is newly exported to this code, as our measurement if the emulated nodes
appear in the same PXM. Otherwise, we use REMOTE_DISTANCE.
PXM_INVAL and NID_INVAL are also exported to the ACPI header file so that we
can compare node_to_pxm() results in generic code (in this case, the SRAT
code).

In acpi_scan_nodes(), we immediately return -1 if acpi_numa <= 0, meaning
we haven't detected any underlying ACPI topology or we have explicitly
disabled its use from the command-line with numa=noacpi.
acpi_table_print_srat_entry() and acpi_table_parse_srat() are only
referenced within drivers/acpi/numa.c, so we can mark them as static and
remove their prototypes from the header file.
Likewise, pxm_to_node_map[] and node_to_pxm_map[] are only used within
drivers/acpi/numa.c, so we mark them as static and remove their externs
from the header file.
The automatic 'result' variable is unused in acpi_numa_init(), so it's
removed.

The ACPI EC that is used in MSI laptops knows some non-standard
commands for changing the screen brighntess and a few other things,
which are used by the msi-laptop.c driver. Unfortunately for these
commands no GPE events for IBF and OBF are triggered. Since nowadays
the EC code uses the ec_intr=1 mode by default, this causes these
operations to timeout, although they don't fail. In result, all
operations that you can do with the msi-laptop.c driver take more or
less 1s to complete, which is awfully slow.
In one of the more recent kernels (2.6.20?) the EC subsystem has been
revamped. With that change the EC timeout has been increased. before
that increase the MSI EC accesses were slow -- but not *that* slow,
hence I took notice of this limitation of the MSI EC hardware only very
recently.
The standard EC operations on the MSI EC as defined in the ACPI spec
support GPE events properly.
The following patch adds a new argument "force_poll" to the
ec_transaction() function (and friends). If set to 1, the function
will poll for IBF/OBF even if ec_intr=1 is enabled. If set to 0 the
current behaviour is used. The msi-laptop driver is modified to make
use of this new flag, so that OBF/IBF is polled for the special MSI EC
transactions -- but only for them.
