License cleanup: add SPDX license identifier to uapi header files with no license Many user space API headers are missing licensing information, which makes it hard for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default are files without license information under the default license of the kernel, which is GPLV2. Marking them GPLV2 would exclude them from being included in non GPLV2 code, which is obviously not intended. The user space API headers fall under the syscall exception which is in the kernels COPYING file: NOTE! This copyright does *not* cover user programs that use kernel services by normal system calls - this is merely considered normal use of the kernel, and does *not* fall under the heading of "derived work". otherwise syscall usage would not be possible. Update the files which contain no license information with an SPDX license identifier. The chosen identifier is 'GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note' which is the officially assigned identifier for the Linux syscall exception. SPDX license identifiers are a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. See the previous patch in this series for the methodology of how this patch was researched. clone: add CLONE_PIDFD This patchset makes it possible to retrieve pid file descriptors at process creation time by introducing the new flag CLONE_PIDFD to the clone() system call. Linus originally suggested to implement this as a new flag to clone() instead of making it a separate system call. As spotted by Linus, there is exactly one bit for clone() left. CLONE_PIDFD creates file descriptors based on the anonymous inode implementation in the kernel that will also be used to implement the new mount api. They serve as a simple opaque handle on pids. Logically, this makes it possible to interpret a pidfd differently, narrowing or widening the scope of various operations (e.g. signal sending). Thus, a pidfd cannot just refer to a tgid, but also a tid, or in theory - given appropriate flag arguments in relevant syscalls - a process group or session. A pidfd does not represent a privilege. This does not imply it cannot ever be that way but for now this is not the case. A pidfd comes with additional information in fdinfo if the kernel supports procfs. The fdinfo file contains the pid of the process in the callers pid namespace in the same format as the procfs status file, i.e. "Pid:\t%d". As suggested by Oleg, with CLONE_PIDFD the pidfd is returned in the parent_tidptr argument of clone. This has the advantage that we can give back the associated pid and the pidfd at the same time. To remove worries about missing metadata access this patchset comes with a sample program that illustrates how a combination of CLONE_PIDFD, and pidfd_send_signal() can be used to gain race-free access to process metadata through /proc/<pid>. The sample program can easily be translated into a helper that would be suitable for inclusion in libc so that users don't have to worry about writing it themselves. sched/deadline: Add SCHED_DEADLINE structures & implementation Introduces the data structures, constants and symbols needed for SCHED_DEADLINE implementation. Core data structure of SCHED_DEADLINE are defined, along with their initializers. Hooks for checking if a task belong to the new policy are also added where they are needed. Adds a scheduling class, in sched/dl.c and a new policy called SCHED_DEADLINE. It is an implementation of the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) scheduling algorithm, augmented with a mechanism (called Constant Bandwidth Server, CBS) that makes it possible to isolate the behaviour of tasks between each other. The typical -deadline task will be made up of a computation phase (instance) which is activated on a periodic or sporadic fashion. The expected (maximum) duration of such computation is called the task's runtime; the time interval by which each instance need to be completed is called the task's relative deadline. The task's absolute deadline is dynamically calculated as the time instant a task (better, an instance) activates plus the relative deadline. The EDF algorithms selects the task with the smallest absolute deadline as the one to be executed first, while the CBS ensures each task to run for at most its runtime every (relative) deadline length time interval, avoiding any interference between different tasks (bandwidth isolation). Thanks to this feature, also tasks that do not strictly comply with the computational model sketched above can effectively use the new policy. To summarize, this patch: - introduces the data structures, constants and symbols needed; - implements the core logic of the scheduling algorithm in the new scheduling class file; - provides all the glue code between the new scheduling class and the core scheduler and refines the interactions between sched/dl and the other existing scheduling classes. sched/core: Allow sched_setattr() to use the current policy The sched_setattr() syscall mandates that a policy is always specified. This requires to always know which policy a task will have when attributes are configured and this makes it impossible to add more generic task attributes valid across different scheduling policies. Reading the policy before setting generic tasks attributes is racy since we cannot be sure it is not changed concurrently. Introduce the required support to change generic task attributes without affecting the current task policy. This is done by adding an attribute flag (SCHED_FLAG_KEEP_POLICY) to enforce the usage of the current policy. Add support for the SETPARAM_POLICY policy, which is already used by the sched_setparam() POSIX syscall, to the sched_setattr() non-POSIX syscall. sched/uclamp: Extend sched_setattr() to support utilization clamping The SCHED_DEADLINE scheduling class provides an advanced and formal model to define tasks requirements that can translate into proper decisions for both task placements and frequencies selections. Other classes have a more simplified model based on the POSIX concept of priorities. Such a simple priority based model however does not allow to exploit most advanced features of the Linux scheduler like, for example, driving frequencies selection via the schedutil cpufreq governor. However, also for non SCHED_DEADLINE tasks, it's still interesting to define tasks properties to support scheduler decisions. Utilization clamping exposes to user-space a new set of per-task attributes the scheduler can use as hints about the expected/required utilization for a task. This allows to implement a "proactive" per-task frequency control policy, a more advanced policy than the current one based just on "passive" measured task utilization. For example, it's possible to boost interactive tasks (e.g. to get better performance) or cap background tasks (e.g. to be more energy/thermal efficient). Introduce a new API to set utilization clamping values for a specified task by extending sched_setattr(), a syscall which already allows to define task specific properties for different scheduling classes. A new pair of attributes allows to specify a minimum and maximum utilization the scheduler can consider for a task. Do that by validating the required clamp values before and then applying the required changes using _the_ same pattern already in use for __setscheduler(). This ensures that the task is re-enqueued with the new clamp values.
