The preferred bpp for the fbdev emulation buffer has been 32 so far, which means that by default we will allocate an 8MB buffer with a 1920x1080 resolution. Worse this memory will be allocated from the CMA pool, and will never be freed even if we don't use the fbdev emulation. Therefore, reducing it is a big deal, and switching to 16bpp by default will gain us around 4MB at 1920x1080, while keeping decent color depth. And users still have the option to switch to 32bpp using the kernel command line. Linux kernel
============
There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
