Linus Torvalds 033d9959ed Merge branch 'for-3.7' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tj/wq
Pull workqueue changes from Tejun Heo:
 "This is workqueue updates for v3.7-rc1. A lot of activities this
  round including considerable API and behavior cleanups.

   * delayed_work combines a timer and a work item. The handling of the
     timer part has always been a bit clunky leading to confusing
     cancelation API with weird corner-case behaviors. delayed_work is
     updated to use new IRQ safe timer and cancelation now works as
     expected.

   * Another deficiency of delayed_work was lack of the counterpart of
     mod_timer() which led to cancel+queue combinations or open-coded
     timer+work usages.  mod_delayed_work[_on]() are added.

     These two delayed_work changes make delayed_work provide interface
     and behave like timer which is executed with process context.

   * A work item could be executed concurrently on multiple CPUs, which
     is rather unintuitive and made flush_work() behavior confusing and
     half-broken under certain circumstances. This problem doesn't
     exist for non-reentrant workqueues. While non-reentrancy check
     isn't free, the overhead is incurred only when a work item bounces
     across different CPUs and even in simulated pathological scenario
     the overhead isn't too high.

     All workqueues are made non-reentrant. This removes the
     distinction between flush_[delayed_]work() and
     flush_[delayed_]_work_sync(). The former is now as strong as the
     latter and the specified work item is guaranteed to have finished
     execution of any previous queueing on return.

   * In addition to the various bug fixes, Lai redid and simplified CPU
     hotplug handling significantly.

   * Joonsoo introduced system_highpri_wq and used it during CPU
     hotplug.

  There are two merge commits - one to pull in IRQ safe timer from
  tip/timers/core and the other to pull in CPU hotplug fixes from
  wq/for-3.6-fixes as Lai's hotplug restructuring depended on them."

Fixed a number of trivial conflicts, but the more interesting conflicts
were silent ones where the deprecated interfaces had been used by new
code in the merge window, and thus didn't cause any real data conflicts.

Tejun pointed out a few of them, I fixed a couple more.

/*
* Theory of operations.
* We keep one entry for each peer IP address. The nodes contains long-living
* information about the peer which doesn't depend on routes.
* At this moment this information consists only of ID field for the next
* outgoing IP packet. This field is incremented with each packet as encoded
* in inet_getid() function (include/net/inetpeer.h).
* At the moment of writing this notes identifier of IP packets is generated
* to be unpredictable using this code only for packets subjected
* (actually or potentially) to defragmentation. I.e. DF packets less than
* PMTU in size uses a constant ID and do not use this code (see
* ip_select_ident() in include/net/ip.h).
*
* Route cache entries hold references to our nodes.
* New cache entries get references via lookup by destination IP address in
* the avl tree. The reference is grabbed only when it's needed i.e. only
* when we try to output IP packet which needs an unpredictable ID (see
* __ip_select_ident() in net/ipv4/route.c).
* Nodes are removed only when reference counter goes to 0.
* When it's happened the node may be removed when a sufficient amount of
* time has been passed since its last use. The less-recently-used entry can
* also be removed if the pool is overloaded i.e. if the total amount of
* entries is greater-or-equal than the threshold.
*
* Node pool is organised as an AVL tree.
* Such an implementation has been chosen not just for fun. It's a way to
* prevent easy and efficient DoS attacks by creating hash collisions. A huge
* amount of long living nodes in a single hash slot would significantly delay
* lookups performed with disabled BHs.
*
* Serialisation issues.
* 1. Nodes may appear in the tree only with the pool lock held.
* 2. Nodes may disappear from the tree only with the pool lock held
* AND reference count being 0.
* 3. Global variable peer_total is modified under the pool lock.
* 4. struct inet_peer fields modification:
* avl_left, avl_right, avl_parent, avl_height: pool lock
* refcnt: atomically against modifications on other CPU;
* usually under some other lock to prevent node disappearing
* daddr: unchangeable
* ip_id_count: atomic value (no lock needed)
