96a2c464de tracing/bkl: Add bkl ftrace events
Add two events lock_kernel and unlock_kernel() to trace the bkl uses.
This opens the door for userspace tools to perform statistics about
the callsites that use it, dependencies with other locks (by pairing
the trace with lock events), use with recursivity and so on...

The {__reacquire,release}_kernel_lock() events are not traced because
these are called from schedule, thus the sched events are sufficient
to trace them.

Example of a trace:

hald-addon-stor-4152  [000]   165.875501: unlock_kernel: depth: 0, fs/block_dev.c:1358 __blkdev_put()
hald-addon-stor-4152  [000]   167.832974: lock_kernel: depth: 0, fs/block_dev.c:1167 __blkdev_get()

How to get the callsites that acquire it recursively:

cd /debug/tracing/events/bkl
echo "lock_depth > 0" > filter

firefox-4951  [001]   206.276967: unlock_kernel: depth: 1, fs/reiserfs/super.c:575 reiserfs_dirty_inode()

You can also filter by file and/or line.

v2: Use of FILTER_PTR_STRING attribute for files and lines fields to
    make them traceable.

0d3d062a6e tracing, page-allocator: add trace event for page traffic related to the buddy lists
The page allocation trace event reports that a page was successfully
allocated but it does not specify where it came from. When analysing
performance, it can be important to distinguish between pages coming from
the per-cpu allocator and pages coming from the buddy lists as the latter
requires the zone lock to the taken and more data structures to be
examined.

This patch adds a trace event for __rmqueue reporting when a page is being
allocated from the buddy lists. It distinguishes between being called to
refill the per-cpu lists or whether it is a high-order allocation.
Similarly, this patch adds an event to catch when the PCP lists are being
drained a little and pages are going back to the buddy lists.

This is trickier to draw conclusions from but high activity on those
events could explain why there were a large number of cache misses on a
page-allocator-intensive workload. The coalescing and splitting of
buddies involves a lot of writing of page metadata and cache line bounces
not to mention the acquisition of an interrupt-safe lock necessary to
enter this path.

e0fff1bd12 tracing, page-allocator: add trace events for anti-fragmentation falling back to other migratetypes
Fragmentation avoidance depends on being able to use free pages from lists
of the appropriate migrate type. In the event this is not possible,
__rmqueue_fallback() selects a different list and in some circumstances
change the migratetype of the pageblock. Simplistically, the more times
this event occurs, the more likely that fragmentation will be a problem
later for hugepage allocation at least but there are other considerations
such as the order of page being split to satisfy the allocation.

This patch adds a trace event for __rmqueue_fallback() that reports what
page is being used for the fallback, the orders of relevant pages, the
desired migratetype and the migratetype of the lists being used, whether
the pageblock changed type and whether this event is important with
respect to fragmentation avoidance or not. This information can be used
to help analyse fragmentation avoidance and help decide whether
min_free_kbytes should be increased or not.

4b4f278c03 tracing, page-allocator: add trace events for page allocation and page freeing
This patch adds trace events for the allocation and freeing of pages,
including the freeing of pagevecs. Using the events, it will be known
what struct page and pfns are being allocated and freed and what the call
site was in many cases.

The page alloc tracepoints be used as an indicator as to whether the
workload was heavily dependant on the page allocator or not. You can make
a guess based on vmstat but you can't get a per-process breakdown.
Depending on the call path, the call_site for page allocation may be
__get_free_pages() instead of a useful callsite. Instead of passing down
a return address similar to slab debugging, the user should enable the
stacktrace and seg-addr options to get a proper stack trace.

The pagevec free tracepoint has a different usecase. It can be used to
get a idea of how many pages are being dumped off the LRU and whether it
is kswapd doing the work or a process doing direct reclaim.

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
  with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
  over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
  in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
  better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
  instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

20ab4425a7 tracing: Allocate the ftrace event profile buffer dynamically
Currently the trace event profile buffer is allocated in the stack. But
this may be too much for the stack, as the events can have large
statically defined field size and can also grow with dynamic arrays.

Allocate two per cpu buffer for all profiled events. The first cpu
buffer is used to host every non-nmi context traces. It is protected
by disabling the interrupts while writing and committing the trace.

The second buffer is reserved for nmi. So that there is no race between
them and the first buffer.

The whole write/commit section is rcu protected because we release
these buffers while deactivating the last profiling trace event.

v2: Move the buffers from trace_event to be global, as pointed by
    Steven Rostedt.

v3: Fix the syscall events to handle the profiling buffer races
    by disabling interrupts, now that the buffers are globals.

fe63b94a43 tracing: prevent NULL pointer dereference in ftrace_raw_event_block_bio_bounce
Booting 2.6.31 and executing
   echo 1 >/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/enable
leads to
BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)
IP: [<c032a583>] ftrace_raw_event_block_bio_bounce+0x4b/0xb9

Apparently,
   bio = bio_map_user(q, NULL, uaddr, len, reading, gfp_mask);
is called in block/blk-map.c:58 where bio->bi_bdev in set to NULL and
still is NULL when an attempt is made to evaluate bio->bi_bdev->bd_dev
in include/trace/events/block.h:189.

The tracepoint should ensure bio->bi_bdev is not dereferenced, if NULL.

e77405ad80 tracing: pass around ring buffer instead of tracer
The latency tracers (irqsoff and wakeup) can swap trace buffers
on the fly. If an event is happening and has reserved data on one of
the buffers, and the latency tracer swaps the global buffer with the
max buffer, the result is that the event may commit the data to the
wrong buffer.

This patch changes the API to the trace recording to be recieve the
buffer that was used to reserve a commit. Then this buffer can be passed
in to the commit.

0dd7b74787 tracing: Fix double CPP substitution in TRACE_EVENT_FN
TRACE_EVENT_FN relays on TRACE_EVENT by reprocessing its parameters
into the ftrace events CPP macro. This leads to a double substitution
in some cases.

For example, a bad consequence is a format always prefixed by
"%s, %s\n" for every TRACE_EVENT_FN based events.

Eg:
	cat /debug/tracing/events/syscalls/sys_enter/format
	[...]
	print fmt: "%s, %s\n", "\"NR %ld (%lx, %lx, %lx, %lx, %lx, %lx)\"",\
	"REC->id, REC->args[0], REC->args[1], REC->args[2], REC->args[3],\
	REC->args[4], REC->args[5]"

This creates a failure in post-processing tools such as perf trace or
trace-cmd.

Then drop this double substitution and replace it by a new __cpparg()
macro that relays CPP arguments containing commas.

6c347d43ee tracing: Undef TRACE_EVENT_FN between trace events headers inclusion
The recent commit:

	tracing/events: fix the include file dependencies

fixed a file dependency problem while including more than
one trace event header file.

This fix undefined TRACE_EVENT after an event header macro
preprocessing in order to make tracepoint.h able to correctly declare
the tracepoints necessary for the next event header file.

But now we also need to undefine TRACE_EVENT_FN at the end of an event
header file preprocessing for the same reason.

This fixes the following build error:

bd1a5c849b tracing: Ftrace dynamic ftrace_event_call support
Add dynamic ftrace_event_call support to ftrace. Trace engines can add
new ftrace_event_call to ftrace on the fly. Each operator function of
the call takes an ftrace_event_call data structure as an argument,
because these functions may be shared among several ftrace_event_calls.

Changes from v13:
 - Define remove_subsystem_dir() always (revirt a2ca5e03), because
   trace_remove_event_call() uses it.
 - Modify syscall tracer because of ftrace_event_call change.

5ac35daa93 tracing/events: fix the include file dependencies
The TRACE_EVENT depends on the include/linux/tracepoint.h first
and include/trace/ftrace.h later, if we include the ftrace.h early,
a building error will occur.

Both define TRACE_EVENT in trace_a.h and trace_b.h, if we include
those in .c file, like this:

#define CREATE_TRACE_POINTS
include <trace/events/trace_a.h>
include <trace/events/trace_b.h>

The above will not work, because the TRACE_EVENT was re-defined by
the previous .h file.

9741987586 tracing: Move tracepoint callbacks from declaration to definition
It's not strictly correct for the tracepoint reg/unreg callbacks to
occur when a client is hooking up, because the actual tracepoint may not
be present yet. This happens to be fine for syscall, since that's in
the core kernel, but it would cause problems for tracepoints defined in
a module that hasn't been loaded yet. It also means the reg/unreg has
to be EXPORTed for any modules to use the tracepoint (as in SystemTap).

This patch removes DECLARE_TRACE_WITH_CALLBACK, and instead introduces
DEFINE_TRACE_FN which stores the callbacks in struct tracepoint. The
callbacks are used now when the active state of the tracepoint changes
in set_tracepoint & disable_tracepoint.

This also introduces TRACE_EVENT_FN, so ftrace events can also provide
registration callbacks if needed.

e9b3cc1b37 net: skb ftracer - add tracepoint to skb_copy_datagram_iovec (v3)
skb allocation / cosumption tracer - Add consumption tracepoint

This patch adds a tracepoint to skb_copy_datagram_iovec, which is called each
time a userspace process copies a frame from a socket receive queue to a user
space buffer. It allows us to hook in and examine each sk_buff that the system
receives on a per-socket bases, and can be use to compile a list of which skb's
were received by which processes.

dc4ddb4c0b tracing: Add fields format definition for syscall events
Define the format of the syscall trace fields to parse the binary

This is defined dynamically using the syscalls metadata.
It prepares the export of syscall event raw records to perf

format:

	field:int common_pid;	offset:4;	size:4;
	field:int common_tgid;	offset:8;	size:4;

	field:pid_t pid;	offset:12;	size:8;
	field:struct sched_param * param;	offset:20;	size:8;

304703aba3 perf_counter: Subtract the buffer size field from the event record size
We compute the perf raw sample size by aligning the raw ftrace
event size plus the buffer size field itself. We do that
instead of aligning only the perf raw sample size, so that we
might economize some in some cases.

But this buffer size field is not stored in the perf raw
sample, we must then substract its size from the buffer once we
computed the alignment unless we may get a useless u32 field in
the buffer.

f413cdb80c perf_counter: Fix/complete ftrace event records sampling
This patch implements the kernel side support for ftrace event
record sampling.

A new counter sampling attribute is added:

   PERF_SAMPLE_TP_RECORD

which requests ftrace events record sampling. In this case
if a PERF_TYPE_TRACEPOINT counter is active and a tracepoint
fires, we emit the tracepoint binary record to the
perfcounter event buffer, as a sample.

Result, after setting PERF_SAMPLE_TP_RECORD attribute from perf
record:

 perf record -f -F 1 -a -e workqueue:workqueue_execution
 perf report -D

 0x21e18 [0x48]: event: 9

.
0x21e18 [0x48]: PERF_EVENT_SAMPLE (IP, 1): 10: 0xffffffff8100c7d0 period: 33

The raw ftrace binary record starts at offset 0020.

Translation:

 struct trace_entry {
	type		= 0x2b = 43;
	flags		= 1;
	preempt_count	= 2;
	pid		= 0xa = 10;
	tgid		= 0xa = 10;
 }

 thread_comm = "events/1"
 thread_pid  = 0xa = 10;
 func	    = 0xffffffff8131b1e0 = flush_to_ldisc()

What will come next?

 - Userspace support ('perf trace'), 'flight data recorder' mode
   for perf trace, etc.

 - The unconditional copy from the profiling callback brings
   some costs however if someone wants no such sampling to
   occur, and needs to be fixed in the future. For that we need
   to have an instant access to the perf counter attribute.
   This is a matter of a flag to add in the struct ftrace_event.

 - Take care of the events recursivity! Don't ever try to record
   a lock event for example, it seems some locking is used in
   the profiling fast path and lead to a tracing recursivity.
   That will be fixed using raw spinlock or recursivity
   protection.

 - [...]

 - Profit! :-)

7d536cb3fb tracing/events: record the size of dynamic arrays
When a dynamic array is defined, we add __data_loc_foo in
trace_entry to record the offset of the array, but the
size of the array is not recorded, which causes 2 problems:

- the event filter just compares the first 2 chars of the strings.

- parsers can't parse dynamic arrays.

So TRACE_SYSTEM should be defined outside of #if proctection,

Imaging this scenario:

6ff9a64d2a tracing: do not translate event helper macros in print format
By moving the macro that creates the print format code above the
defining of the event macro helpers (__get_str, __print_symbolic,
and __get_dynamic_array), we get a little cleaner print format.

Instead of:

  (char *)((void *)REC + REC->__data_loc_name)

we get:

   __get_str(name)

Instead of:

   ({ static const struct trace_print_flags symbols[] = { { HI_SOFTIRQ, "HI" }, {

we get:

   __print_symbolic(REC->vec, { HI_SOFTIRQ, "HI" }, {

55782138e4 tracing/events: convert block trace points to TRACE_EVENT()
TRACE_EVENT is a more generic way to define tracepoints. Doing so adds
these new capabilities to this tracepoint:

  - zero-copy and per-cpu splice() tracing
  - binary tracing without printf overhead
  - structured logging records exposed under /debug/tracing/events
  - trace events embedded in function tracer output and other plugins
  - user-defined, per tracepoint filter expressions
  ...

Cons:

  - no dev_t info for the output of plug, unplug_timer and unplug_io events.
    no dev_t info for getrq and sleeprq events if bio == NULL.
    no dev_t info for rq_abort,...,rq_requeue events if rq->rq_disk == NULL.

    This is mainly because we can't get the deivce from a request queue.
    But this may change in the future.

  - A packet command is converted to a string in TP_assign, not TP_print.
    While blktrace do the convertion just before output.

    Since pc requests should be rather rare, this is not a big issue.

  - In blktrace, an event can have 2 different print formats, but a TRACE_EVENT
    has a unique format, which means we have some unused data in a trace entry.

    The overhead is minimized by using __dynamic_array() instead of __array().

I've benchmarked the ioctl blktrace vs the splice based TRACE_EVENT tracing:

      dd dd + ioctl blktrace dd + TRACE_EVENT (splice)
1     7.36s, 42.7 MB/s     7.50s, 42.0 MB/s          7.41s, 42.5 MB/s
2     7.43s, 42.3 MB/s     7.48s, 42.1 MB/s          7.43s, 42.4 MB/s
3     7.38s, 42.6 MB/s     7.45s, 42.2 MB/s          7.41s, 42.5 MB/s

So the overhead of tracing is very small, and no regression when using
those trace events vs blktrace.

And the binary output of TRACE_EVENT is much smaller than blktrace:

 # ls -l -h
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8.8M 06-09 13:24 sda.blktrace.0
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 195K 06-09 13:24 sda.blktrace.1

7fcb7c472f tracing/events: introduce __dynamic_array()
__string() is limited:

  - it's a char array, but we may want to define array with other types
  - a source string should be available, but we may just know the string size

We introduce __dynamic_array() to break those limitations, and __string()
becomes a wrapper of it. As a side effect, now __get_str() can be used
in TP_fast_assign but not only TP_print.

Take XFS for example, we have the string length in the dirent, but the
string itself is not NULL-terminated, so __dynamic_array() can be used:

TRACE_EVENT(xfs_dir2,
	TP_PROTO(struct xfs_da_args *args),
	TP_ARGS(args),

	TP_STRUCT__entry(
		__field(int, namelen)
		__dynamic_array(char, name, args->namelen + 1)
		...
	),

	TP_fast_assign(
		char *name = __get_str(name);

		if (args->namelen)
			memcpy(name, args->name, args->namelen);
		name[args->namelen] = '\0';

		__entry->namelen = args->namelen;
	),

	TP_printk("name %.*s namelen %d",
		  __entry->namelen ? __get_str(name) : NULL
		  __entry->namelen)
);

be74b73a57 tracing: add __print_flags for events
Developers have been asking for the ability in the ftrace event tracer
to display names of bits in a flags variable.

Instead of printing out c2, it would be easier to read FOO|BAR|GOO,
assuming that FOO is bit 1, BAR is bit 6 and GOO is bit 7.

Some examples where this would be useful are the state flags in a context
switch, kmalloc flags, and even permision flags in accessing files.

  Frederic Weisbecker's idea of using a mask instead of bits,

b0aae68cc5 tracing/events: change the type of __str_loc_item to unsigned short
When defining a dynamic size string, we add __str_loc_##item to the
trace entry, and it stores the location of the actual string in
entry->_str_data[]

'unsigned short' should be sufficient to store this information, thus
we save 2 bytes per dyn-size string in the ring buffer.

[ Impact: reduce memory occupied by dyn-size strings in ring buffer ]

4ea7e38696 dropmon: add ability to detect when hardware dropsrxpackets
Patch to add the ability to detect drops in hardware interfaces via dropwatch.
Adds a tracepoint to net_rx_action to signal everytime a napi instance is
polled. The dropmon code then periodically checks to see if the rx_frames
counter has changed, and if so, adds a drop notification to the netlink
protocol, using the reserved all-0's vector to indicate the drop location was in
hardware, rather than somewhere in the code.

a118e4d140 tracing/filters: distinguish between signed and unsigned fields
The new filter comparison ops need to be able to distinguish between
signed and unsigned field types, so add an is_signed flag/param to the
event field struct/trace_define_fields(). Also define a simple macro,

c2518c4366 tracing: fix cut and paste macro error
In case a module uses the TRACE_EVENT macro for creating automated
events in ftrace, it may choose to use a different file name
than the defined system name, or choose to use a different path than
the default "include/trace/events" include path.

If this is done, then before including trace/define_trace.h the
header would define either "TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE" for the file
name or "TRACE_INCLUDE_PATH" for the include path.

If it does not define these, then the define_trace.h defines them
instead. If define trace defines them, then define_trace.h should
also undefine them before exiting. To do this a macro is used
to note this:

 #ifndef TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE
 # define TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE TRACE_SYSTEM
 # define UNDEF_TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE
 #endif

[...]

 #ifdef UNDEF_TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE
 # undef TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE
 # undef UNDEF_TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE
 #endif

The UNDEF_TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE acts as a CPP variable to know to undef
the TRACE_INCLUDE_FILE before leaving define_trace.h.

Unfortunately, due to cut and paste errors, the macros between
FILE and PATH got mixed up.

9cbf117662 tracing/events: provide string with undefined size support
This patch provides the support for dynamic size strings on
event tracing.

The key concept is to use a structure with an ending char array field of
undefined size and use such ability to allocate the minimal size on the
ring buffer to make one or more string entries fit inside, as opposite
to a fixed length strings with upper bound.

The strings themselves are represented using fields which have an offset
value from the beginning of the entry.

This patch provides three new macros:

__string(item, src)

This one declares a string to the structure inside TP_STRUCT__entry.
You need to provide the name of the string field and the source that will
be copied inside.
This will also add the dynamic size of the string needed for the ring
buffer entry allocation.
A stack allocated structure is used to temporarily store the offset
of each strings, avoiding double calls to strlen() on each event
insertion.

__get_str(field)

This one will give you a pointer to the string you have created. This
is an abstract helper to resolve the absolute address given the field
name which is a relative address from the beginning of the trace_structure.

__assign_str(dst, src)

Use this macro to automatically perform the string copy from src to
dst. src must be a variable to assign and dst is the name of a __string
field.

Example on how to use it:

TRACE_EVENT(my_event,
	TP_PROTO(char *src1, char *src2),

	TP_ARGS(src1, src2),
	TP_STRUCT__entry(
		__string(str1, src1)
		__string(str2, src2)
	),
	TP_fast_assign(
		__assign_str(str1, src1);
		__assign_str(str2, src2);
	),
	TP_printk("%s %s", __get_str(src1), __get_str(src2))
)

Of course you can mix-up any __field or __array inside this
TRACE_EVENT. The position of the __string or __assign_str
doesn't matter.

Changes in v2:

Address the suggestion of Steven Rostedt: drop the opening_string() macro
and redefine __ending_string() to get the size of the string to be copied
instead of overwritting the whole ring buffer allocation.

Changes in v3:

Address other suggestions of Steven Rostedt and Peter Zijlstra with
some changes: drop the __ending_string and the need to have only one
string field.
Use offsets instead of absolute addresses.

a8d154b009 tracing: create automated trace defines
This patch lowers the number of places a developer must modify to add
new tracepoints. The current method to add a new tracepoint
into an existing system is to write the trace point macro in the
trace header with one of the macros TRACE_EVENT, TRACE_FORMAT or
DECLARE_TRACE, then they must add the same named item into the C file
with the macro DEFINE_TRACE(name) and then add the trace point.

This change cuts out the needing to add the DEFINE_TRACE(name).
Every file that uses the tracepoint must still include the trace/<type>.h
file, but the one C file must also add a define before the including
of that file.

 #define CREATE_TRACE_POINTS
 #include <trace/mytrace.h>

This will cause the trace/mytrace.h file to also produce the C code
necessary to implement the trace point.

Note, if more than one trace/<type>.h is used to create the C code
it is best to list them all together.

 #define CREATE_TRACE_POINTS
 #include <trace/foo.h>
 #include <trace/bar.h>
 #include <trace/fido.h>

Thanks to Mathieu Desnoyers and Christoph Hellwig for coming up with
the cleaner solution of the define above the includes over my first
design to have the C code include a "special" header.

This patch converts sched, irq and lockdep and skb to use this new
method.

ea20d9293c tracing: consolidate trace and trace_event headers
Impact: clean up

Neil Horman (et. al.) criticized the way the trace events were broken up
into two files. The reason for that was that ftrace needed to separate out
the declarations from where the #include <linux/tracepoint.h> was used.
It then dawned on me that the tracepoint.h header only needs to define the
TRACE_EVENT macro if it is not already defined.

The solution is simply to test if TRACE_EVENT is defined, and if it is not
then the linux/tracepoint.h header can define it. This change consolidates
all the <traces>.h and <traces>_event_types.h into the <traces>.h file.

  bash-4816  [000]   202.652815: lock_contended: lock_contended: &sb->s_type->i_mutex_key
  bash-4816  [000]   202.652819: lock_acquired: &rq->lock (0.000 us)
 <...>-4787  [000]   202.652825: lock_acquired: &rq->lock (0.000 us)
 <...>-4787  [000]   202.652829: lock_acquired: &rq->lock (0.000 us)
  bash-4816  [000]   202.652833: lock_acquired: &sb->s_type->i_mutex_key (16.005 us)

As shown above, the "lock acquired" field is followed by the time
it has been waiting for the lock. Usually, a lock contended entry
is followed by a near lock_acquired entry with a non-zero time waited.

47788c58e6 tracing/syscalls: use a dedicated file header
Impact: fix build warnings and possibe compat misbehavior on IA64

Building a kernel on ia64 might trigger these ugly build warnings:

sys_ia32.c includes linux/syscalls.h which in turn includes linux/ftrace.h
to import the syscalls tracing prototypes.

But including ftrace.h can pull too much things for a low level file,
especially on ia64 where the ia32 private headers conflict with higher
level headers.

Now we isolate the syscall tracing headers in their own lightweight file.

da4d03020c tracing: new format for specialized trace points
Impact: clean up and enhancement

The TRACE_EVENT_FORMAT macro looks quite ugly and is limited in its
ability to save data as well as to print the record out. Working with
Ingo Molnar, we came up with a new format that is much more pleasing to
the eye of C developers. This new macro is more C style than the old
macro, and is more obvious to what it does.

Here's the example. The only updated macro in this patch is the
sched_switch trace point.

The old method looked like this:

 TRACE_EVENT_FORMAT(sched_switch,
        TP_PROTO(struct rq *rq, struct task_struct *prev,
                struct task_struct *next),
        TP_ARGS(rq, prev, next),
        TP_FMT("task %s:%d ==> %s:%d",
              prev->comm, prev->pid, next->comm, next->pid),
        TRACE_STRUCT(
                TRACE_FIELD(pid_t, prev_pid, prev->pid)
                TRACE_FIELD(int, prev_prio, prev->prio)
                TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL(char next_comm[TASK_COMM_LEN],
                                    next_comm,
                                    TP_CMD(memcpy(TRACE_ENTRY->next_comm,
                                                 next->comm,
                                                 TASK_COMM_LEN)))
                TRACE_FIELD(pid_t, next_pid, next->pid)
                TRACE_FIELD(int, next_prio, next->prio)
        ),
        TP_RAW_FMT("prev %d:%d ==> next %s:%d:%d")
        );

The above method is hard to read and requires two format fields.

The new method:

 /*
  * Tracepoint for task switches, performed by the scheduler:
  *
  * (NOTE: the 'rq' argument is not used by generic trace events,
  * but used by the latency tracer plugin. )
  */
 TRACE_EVENT(sched_switch,

	TP_PROTO(struct rq *rq, struct task_struct *prev,
		 struct task_struct *next),

	TP_ARGS(rq, prev, next),

	TP_STRUCT__entry(
		__array(	char,	prev_comm,	TASK_COMM_LEN	)
		__field(	pid_t,	prev_pid			)
		__field(	int,	prev_prio			)
		__array(	char,	next_comm,	TASK_COMM_LEN	)
		__field(	pid_t,	next_pid			)
		__field(	int,	next_prio			)
	),

	TP_printk("task %s:%d [%d] ==> %s:%d [%d]",
		__entry->prev_comm, __entry->prev_pid, __entry->prev_prio,
		__entry->next_comm, __entry->next_pid, __entry->next_prio),

	TP_fast_assign(
		memcpy(__entry->next_comm, next->comm, TASK_COMM_LEN);
		__entry->prev_pid	= prev->pid;
		__entry->prev_prio	= prev->prio;
		memcpy(__entry->prev_comm, prev->comm, TASK_COMM_LEN);
		__entry->next_pid	= next->pid;
		__entry->next_prio	= next->prio;
	)
 );

This macro is called TRACE_EVENT, it is broken up into 5 parts:

 TP_PROTO: the proto type of the trace point
 TP_ARGS: the arguments of the trace point
 TP_STRUCT_entry: the structure layout of the entry in the ring buffer
 TP_printk:       the printk format
 TP_fast_assign: the method used to write the entry into the ring buffer

The structure is the definition of how the event will be saved in the
ring buffer. The printk is used by the internal tracing in case of
an oops, and the kernel needs to print out the format of the record
to the console. This the TP_printk gives a means to show the records
in a human readable format. It is also used to print out the data
from the trace file.

The TP_fast_assign is executed directly. It is basically like a C function,
where the __entry is the handle to the record.

d20e3b0384 tracing: add TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL to record complex entries
Tom Zanussi pointed out that the simple TRACE_FIELD was not enough to
record trace data that required memcpy. This patch addresses this issue
by adding a TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL. The format is similar to TRACE_FIELD
but looks like so:

  TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL(type_item, item, cmd)

What TRACE_FIELD gave was:

  TRACE_FIELD(type, item, assign)

The TRACE_FIELD would be used in declaring a structure:

  struct {
	type	item;
  };

And later assign it via:

  entry->item = assign;

What TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL gives us is:

In the declaration of the structure:

  struct {
	type_item;
  };

And the assignment:

  cmd;

This change log will explain the one example used in the patch:

 TRACE_EVENT_FORMAT(sched_switch,
	TPPROTO(struct rq *rq, struct task_struct *prev,
		struct task_struct *next),
	TPARGS(rq, prev, next),
	TPFMT("task %s:%d ==> %s:%d",
	      prev->comm, prev->pid, next->comm, next->pid),
	TRACE_STRUCT(
		TRACE_FIELD(pid_t, prev_pid, prev->pid)
		TRACE_FIELD(int, prev_prio, prev->prio)
		TRACE_FIELD_SPECIAL(char next_comm[TASK_COMM_LEN],
				    next_comm,
				    TPCMD(memcpy(TRACE_ENTRY->next_comm,
						 next->comm,
						 TASK_COMM_LEN)))
		TRACE_FIELD(pid_t, next_pid, next->pid)
		TRACE_FIELD(int, next_prio, next->prio)
	),
	TPRAWFMT("prev %d:%d ==> next %s:%d:%d")
	);

 The struct will be create as:

  struct {
	pid_t		prev_pid;
	int		prev_prio;
	char next_comm[TASK_COMM_LEN];
	pid_t		next_pid;
	int		next_prio;
  };

Note the TRACE_ENTRY in the cmd part of TRACE_SPECIAL. TRACE_ENTRY will
be set by the tracer to point to the structure inside the trace buffer.

  entry->prev_pid	= prev->pid;
  entry->prev_prio	= prev->prio;
  memcpy(entry->next_comm, next->comm, TASK_COMM_LEN);
  entry->next_pid	= next->pid;
  entry->next_prio	= next->prio

eb594e45f6 tracing: move trace point formats to files in include/trace directory
Impact: clean up

To further facilitate the ease of adding trace points for developers, this
patch creates include/trace/trace_events.h and
include/trace/trace_event_types.h.

The former file will hold the trace/<type>.h files and the latter will hold
the trace/<type>_event_types.h files.

To create new tracepoints and to have them automatically
appear in the event tracer, a developer makes the trace/<type>.h file
which includes <linux/tracepoint.h> and the trace/<type>_event_types.h file.

The trace/<type>_event_types.h file will hold the TRACE_FORMAT
macros.

Then add the trace/<type>.h file to trace/trace_events.h,
and add the trace/<type>_event_types.h to the trace_event_types.h file.

No need to modify files elsewhere.

eef62a6826 tracing: rename DEFINE_TRACE_FMT to just TRACE_FORMAT
There's been a bit confusion to whether DEFINE/DECLARE_TRACE_FMT should
be a DEFINE or a DECLARE. Ingo Molnar suggested simply calling it
TRACE_FORMAT.

e1d8aa9f1d tracing: add a new workqueue tracer
Impact: new tracer

The workqueue tracer provides some statistical informations
about each cpu workqueue thread such as the number of the
works inserted and executed since their creation. It can help
to evaluate the amount of work each of them have to perform.
For example it can help a developer to decide whether he should
choose a per cpu workqueue instead of a singlethreaded one.

It only traces statistical informations for now but it will probably later
provide event tracing too.

Such a tracer could help too, and be improved, to help rt priority sorted
workqueue development.

To have a snapshot of the workqueues state at any time, just do

cat /debugfs/tracing/trace_stat/workqueues

Ie:

  1    125        125       reiserfs/1
  1      0          0       scsi_tgtd/1

Changes in V2:

_ Drop the static array based on NR_CPU and dynamically allocate the stat array
  with num_possible_cpus() and other cpu mask facilities....
_ Trace workqueue insertion at a bit lower level (insert_work instead of queue_work) to handle
  even the workqueue barriers.

This patch adapts kmemtrace raw events tracing to the unified tracing API.

Yeah I shall confess kmem_minimalistic should be: kmem_alternative.

Whatever, I find it more readable but this a personal opinion of course.
We can drop it if you want.

On the ALLOC/FREE column, + means an allocation and - a free.

On the type column, you have K = kmalloc, C = cache, P = page

I would like the flags to be GFP_* strings but that would not be easy to not
break the column with strings....

About the node...it seems to always be -1. I don't know why but that shouldn't
be difficult to find.

I moved linux/tracepoint.h to trace/tracepoint.h as well. I think that would
be more easy to find the tracer headers if they are all in their common
directory.

Add DEFINE_TRACE() to tracepoints to let them declare the tracepoint

7423907283 tracing/fastboot: Use the ring-buffer timestamp for initcall entries
Impact: Split the boot tracer entries in two parts: call and return

Now that we are using the sched tracer from the boot tracer, we want
to use the same timestamp than the ring-buffer to have consistent time
captures between sched events and initcall events.

So we get rid of the old time capture by the boot tracer and split the
initcall events in two parts: call and return. This way we have the
ring buffer timestamp of both.

An example trace:

3f5ec13696 tracing/fastboot: move boot tracer structs and funcs into their own header.
Impact: Cleanups on the boot tracer and ftrace

This patch bring some cleanups about the boot tracer headers. The
functions and structures of this tracer have nothing related to ftrace
and should have so their own header file.

0a16b60758 tracing, sched: LTTng instrumentation - scheduler
Instrument the scheduler activity (sched_switch, migration, wakeups,
wait for a task, signal delivery) and process/thread
creation/destruction (fork, exit, kthread stop). Actually, kthread
creation is not instrumented in this patch because it is architecture
dependent. It allows to connect tracers such as ftrace which detects
scheduling latencies, good/bad scheduler decisions. Tools like LTTng can
export this scheduler information along with instrumentation of the rest
of the kernel activity to perform post-mortem analysis on the scheduler
activity.

About the performance impact of tracepoints (which is comparable to
markers), even without immediate values optimizations, tests done by
Hideo Aoki on ia64 show no regression. His test case was using hackbench
on a kernel where scheduler instrumentation (about 5 events in code
scheduler code) was added. See the "Tracepoints" patch header for
performance result detail.

Changelog :

- Change instrumentation location and parameter to match ftrace
  instrumentation, previously done with kernel markers.
