Quoting from the datasheet for S25FL064P, rev. 05, Nov 18 2011, § 9.17:
"A 64 kB[sic] sector erase (D8h) command issued on 4 kB or 8 kB erase
sectors will erase all sectors in the specified 64 kB region. However,
please note that a 4 kB sector erase (20h) or 8 kB sector erase (40h)
command will not work on a 64 kB sector."
Referring further to Table 8.1 and Table 8.2, it is clearly seen
that most of the sectors are 64KiB; therefore disable this 4KiB
erase support since it's valid only on first/last sectors.

Use devm_kzalloc for all calls to kzalloc and not just the first. Use devm
functions for other allocations as well.
Move the call to platform_get_resource(pdev, IORESOURCE_MEM, 0) closer to
where its result is passed to devm_request_and_ioremap to make the lack of
need for a NULL test more evident.

Corner case reads do not work, and return false data and
ECC. This case is typically seen in a ubifs usage, with a
read of type:
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_oob(from=14882415, mode=1,
data=(c30eca40:12), oob=( (null):0))
This results in the following reads:
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf= (null), len=111)
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=c30eca40, len=12)
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf= (null), len=389)
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf= (null), len=0)
- docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf= (null), len=16)
If we suppose that the pages content is :
- bytes 0 .. 111 : 0x0a
- bytes 112 .. 255 : 0x0f
Then the returned bytes will be :
- 111 times 0x0a (correct)
- 0x0a 2 times and 0x0f 10 times (incorrect, should be
0x0a,0x0f)
- 0x0f 389 times (correct)
- nothing
- correct OOB
The reason seams that the first 111 bytes read ends between
the 2 docg3 planes, and that the first following read (in
the 12 bytes sequence, read of 16 bit word) returns the byte
of the rightmost plane duplicated in high and lower byte of
the word.
Fix this behaviour by ensuring that if the previous read
ended up in-between the 2 planes, there will be a first 1
byte read to get back to the beginning of leftmost plane.

The drivers' _read() method, absent an error, returns a non-negative integer
indicating the maximum number of bit errors that were corrected in any one
region comprising an ecc step. MTD returns -EUCLEAN if this is >=
bitflip_threshold, 0 otherwise. If bitflip_threshold is zero, the comparison is
not made since these devices lack ECC and always return zero in the non-error
case (thanks Brian)¹. Note that this is a subtle change to the driver
interface.
This and the preceding patches in this set were tested with ubi on top of the
nandsim and docg4 devices, running the ubi test io_basic from mtd-utils.

Merge tag 'split-asm_system_h-for-linus-20120328' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-asm_system
Pull "Disintegrate and delete asm/system.h" from David Howells:
"Here are a bunch of patches to disintegrate asm/system.h into a set of
separate bits to relieve the problem of circular inclusion
dependencies.
I've built all the working defconfigs from all the arches that I can
and made sure that they don't break.
The reason for these patches is that I recently encountered a circular
dependency problem that came about when I produced some patches to
optimise get_order() by rewriting it to use ilog2().
This uses bitops - and on the SH arch asm/bitops.h drags in
asm-generic/get_order.h by a circuituous route involving asm/system.h.
The main difficulty seems to be asm/system.h. It holds a number of
low level bits with no/few dependencies that are commonly used (eg.
memory barriers) and a number of bits with more dependencies that
aren't used in many places (eg. switch_to()).
These patches break asm/system.h up into the following core pieces:
(1) asm/barrier.h
Move memory barriers here. This already done for MIPS and Alpha.
(2) asm/switch_to.h
Move switch_to() and related stuff here.
(3) asm/exec.h
Move arch_align_stack() here. Other process execution related bits
could perhaps go here from asm/processor.h.
(4) asm/cmpxchg.h
Move xchg() and cmpxchg() here as they're full word atomic ops and
frequently used by atomic_xchg() and atomic_cmpxchg().
(5) asm/bug.h
Move die() and related bits.
(6) asm/auxvec.h
Move AT_VECTOR_SIZE_ARCH here.
Other arch headers are created as needed on a per-arch basis."
Fixed up some conflicts from other header file cleanups and moving code
around that has happened in the meantime, so David's testing is somewhat
weakened by that. We'll find out anything that got broken and fix it..

This patch is based on Ville Herva's similar patch to block2mtd.
Trying to pass a parameter through the kernel command line when built-in would
crash the kernel, as phram_setup() was called so early that kmalloc() was not
functional yet.
This patch only saves the parameter string at the early boot stage, and parses
it later when init_phram() is called. The same happens in both module and
built-in cases.
With this patch, I can boot with a statically-compiled phram, and mount a
ext2 root fs from physical RAM, without the need for a initrd.
This has been tested in built-in and module cases, with and without a
parameter string.

Flash device drivers initialize 'ecc_strength' in struct mtd_info, which is the
maximum number of bit errors that can be corrected in one writesize region.
Drivers using the nand interface intitialize 'strength' in struct nand_ecc_ctrl,
which is the maximum number of bit errors that can be corrected in one ecc step.
Nand infrastructure code translates this to 'ecc_strength'.
Also for nand drivers, the nand infrastructure code sets ecc.strength for ecc
modes NAND_ECC_SOFT, NAND_ECC_SOFT_BCH, and NAND_ECC_NONE. It is set in the
driver for all other modes.

In many places in drivers we verify for the zero length, but this is very
inconsistent across drivers. This is obviously the right thing to do, though.
This patch moves the check to the MTD API functions instead and removes a lot

Some MTD drivers return -EINVAL if the 'phys' parameter is not NULL, trying to
convey that they cannot return the physical address. However, this is not very
logical because they still can return the virtual address ('virt'). But some
drivers (lpddr) just ignore the 'phys' parameter instead, which is a more
logical thing to do.
Let's harmonize this and:
1. Always initialize 'virt' and 'phys' to 'NULL' in 'mtd_point()'.
2. Do not return an error if the physical address cannot be found.
So as a result, all drivers will set 'phys' to 'NULL' if it is not supported.
None of the 'mtd_point()' users use 'phys' anyway, so this should not break
anything. I guess we could also just delete this parameter later.

We already verify that offset and length are within the MTD device size
in the MTD API functions. Let's remove the duplicated checks in drivers.
This patch only affects the following API's:

'mtd_get_unmapped_area()'
'mtd_read()'
'mtd_write()'

The 'mtd_unpoint()' API function should be able to return an error code because
it may fail if you specify incorrect offset. This patch changes this MTD API
function and amends all the drivers correspondingly.
Also return '-EOPNOTSUPP' from 'mtd_unpoint()' when the '->unpoint()' method is
undefined. We do not really need this currently, but this just makes
sense to be consistent with 'mtd_point()'.

This patch renames all MTD functions by adding a "_" prefix:
mtd->erase -> mtd->_erase
mtd->read_oob -> mtd->_read_oob
...
The reason is that we are re-working the MTD API and from now on it is
an error to use MTD function pointers directly - we have a corresponding
API call for every pointer. By adding a leading "_" we achieve the following:
1. Make sure we convert every direct pointer users
2. A leading "_" suggests that this interface is internal and it becomes
less likely that people will use them directly
3. Make sure all the out-of-tree modules stop compiling and the owners
spot the big API change and amend them.

Fix up trivial edit/remove conflict in drivers/staging/spectra/lld_mtd.c
This patch makes the 'mtd_writev()' function more usable and logical. We first
teach it to fall-back to the 'default_mtd_writev()' function if the MTD driver
does not define its own '->writev()' method. Then we make block2mtd and JFFS2
just 'mtd_writev()' instead of 'default_mtd_writev()' function. This means we
can now stop exporting 'default_mtd_writev()' and instead, export
'mtd_writev()'. This is much cleaner and more logical, as well as allows us to
get read of another direct 'mtd->writev' access in JFFS2.

Docg3 chips can work in 3 modes : normal MLC mode, fast
mode and reliable mode. Normally, as docg3 is a MLC chip, it
should be configured to work in normal mode.
In both normal mode, each page is distinct. This
means that writing to page 12 of blocks 14,15 writes only to
that page, and reading from page 12 of blocks 14,15 reads
only from that page.
In reliable and fast modes, pages are coupled by pairs, and
are clones one of each other. This means that the available
capacity of the chip is halved. Pages are coupled in each
block, and page of index 2*n contains the same data as page
2*n+1 of the same block.
In fast mode, the reads occur a bit faster, but are a bit
less reliable that in normal mode.
When reading from page 2*n, the chip reads bytes from both
page 2*n and page 2*n+1, makes a logical and for each byte,
and returns the result. As programming a page means
"clearing bits", even if a bit was not cleared on one page
because the flash is worn out, the other page has the bit
cleared, and the result of the "AND" gives a correct result.
When writing to page 2*n, the chip writes data to both page
2*n and page 2*n+1.

lead to (basically) identical code in docprobe.c. The current two
defaults should be merged.
And, while we're at it, if MTD_DOCPROBE is set MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS will
always be set. (MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS depends on MTD_DOCPROBE and it has
a default value.) So the check whether CONFIG_MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS is
defined is unnecessary and should be dropped.

After recent blkdev_get() modifications, open_by_devnum() and
open_bdev_exclusive() are simple wrappers around blkdev_get().
Replace them with blkdev_get_by_dev() and blkdev_get_by_path().
blkdev_get_by_dev() is identical to open_by_devnum().
blkdev_get_by_path() is slightly different in that it doesn't
automatically add %FMODE_EXCL to @mode.
All users are converted. Most conversions are mechanical and don't
introduce any behavior difference. There are several exceptions.
* btrfs now sets FMODE_EXCL in btrfs_device->mode, so there's no
reason to OR it explicitly on blkdev_put().
* gfs2, nilfs2 and the generic mount_bdev() now set FMODE_EXCL in
sb->s_mode.
* With the above changes, sb->s_mode now always should contain
FMODE_EXCL. WARN_ON_ONCE() added to kill_block_super() to detect
errors.
The new blkdev_get_*() functions are with proper docbook comments.
While at it, add function description to blkdev_get() too.

Over time, block layer has accumulated a set of APIs dealing with bdev
open, close, claim and release.
* blkdev_get/put() are the primary open and close functions.
* bd_claim/release() deal with exclusive open.
* open/close_bdev_exclusive() are combination of open and claim and
the other way around, respectively.
* bd_link/unlink_disk_holder() to create and remove holder/slave
symlinks.
* open_by_devnum() wraps bdget() + blkdev_get().
The interface is a bit confusing and the decoupling of open and claim
makes it impossible to properly guarantee exclusive access as
in-kernel open + claim sequence can disturb the existing exclusive
open even before the block layer knows the current open if for another
exclusive access. Reorganize the interface such that,
* blkdev_get() is extended to include exclusive access management.
@holder argument is added and, if is @FMODE_EXCL specified, it will
gain exclusive access atomically w.r.t. other exclusive accesses.
* blkdev_put() is similarly extended. It now takes @mode argument and
if @FMODE_EXCL is set, it releases an exclusive access. Also, when
the last exclusive claim is released, the holder/slave symlinks are
removed automatically.
* bd_claim/release() and close_bdev_exclusive() are no longer
necessary and either made static or removed.
* bd_link_disk_holder() remains the same but bd_unlink_disk_holder()
is no longer necessary and removed.
* open_bdev_exclusive() becomes a simple wrapper around lookup_bdev()
and blkdev_get(). It also has an unexpected extra bdev_read_only()
test which probably should be moved into blkdev_get().
* open_by_devnum() is modified to take @holder argument and pass it to
blkdev_get().
Most of bdev open/close operations are unified into blkdev_get/put()
and most exclusive accesses are tested atomically at the open time (as
it should). This cleans up code and removes some, both valid and
invalid, but unnecessary all the same, corner cases.
open_bdev_exclusive() and open_by_devnum() can use further cleanup -
rename to blkdev_get_by_path() and blkdev_get_by_devt() and drop
special features. Well, let's leave them for another day.
Most conversions are straight-forward. drbd conversion is a bit more
involved as there was some reordering, but the logic should stay the
same.

There are two bdev exclusive open bugs.
* open_bdev_exclusive() must not be called with NULL holder. Use dev
as the holder.
* open_by_devnum() doesn't open the bdev exclusively but
block2mtd_free_device() always assumes it. Explicitly claim the
bdev.
The latter is rather clumsy but will be simplified with future
blkdev_get/put() cleanups.

Since commit 18c6182bae ("Rework
probing/JEDEC code"), m25p80 driver successfully registers chips
even if JEDEC probing fails.
This was needed to support non-JEDEC flashes. Though, it appears
that some platforms (e.g. blackfin bf533 stamp[1]) used the old
behavior to detect if there's any flash connected, so the driver
have to fail on JEDEC probing errors.
This patch restores the old behavior for JEDEC flashes, and adds
"-nonjedec" SPI device IDs for M25Pxx flashes, so that the kernel
still supports non-JEDEC flashes.

Some SPI masters (ep93xx) have limitations when using the SFRMOUT
signal for the spi device chip select. The SFRMOUT signal is
only asserted as long as the spi transmit fifo contains data. As
soon as the last bit is clocked into the receive fifo it gets
deasserted.
The functions sst25l_status and sst25l_match_device use the API
function spi_write_then_read to write a command to the flash then
read the response back. This API function creates a two part spi
message for the write then read. When this message is transferred
the SFRMOUT signal ends up getting deasserted after the command
phase. This causes the command to get aborted by the device so
the read phase returns invalid data.
By changing sst25l_status and sst25l_match_device to use a single
transfer synchronous message, the SFRMOUT signal stays asserted
during the entire message so the correct data always gets returned.
This change will have no effect on SPI masters which use a chip
select mechanism (GPIO's, etc.) which does stay asserted correctly.
As a bonus, the single transfer synchronous messages complete faster
than multi-part messages.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

CAT25 chips (as manufactured by On Semiconductor, previously Catalyst
Semiconductor) are similar to the original M25Px0 chips, except:
- Address width can vary (1-2 bytes, in contrast to 3 bytes in M25P
chips). So, implement convenient m25p_addr2cmd() and m25p_cmdsz()
calls, and place address width information into flash_info struct;
- Page size can vary, therefore we shouldn't hardcode it, so get rid
of FLASH_PAGESIZE definition, and place the page size information
into flash_info struct;
- CAT25 EEPROMs don't need to be erased, so add NO_ERASE flag, and
propagate it to the mtd subsystem.

Previosly the driver always tried JEDEC probing, assuming that non-JEDEC
chips will return '0'. But truly non-JEDEC chips (like CAT25) won't do
that, their behaviour on RDID command is undefined, so the driver should
not call jedec_probe() for these chips.
Also, be less strict on error conditions, don't fail to probe if JEDEC
found a chip that is different from what platform code told, instead
just print some warnings and use an information obtained via JEDEC. In
that case we should not trust partitions any longer, but they might be
still useful (i.e. they could protect some parts of the chip).

This patch converts the m25p80 driver so that now it uses .id_table
for device matching, making it properly detect devices on OpenFirmware
platforms (prior to this patch the driver misdetected non-JEDEC chips,
seeing all chips as "m25p80").
Also, now jedec_probe() only does jedec probing, nothing else. If it
is not able to detect a chip, NULL is returned and the driver fall
backs to the information specified by the platform (platform_data, or
exact ID).

The private data that is allocated when registering a DataFlash

when add_mtd_partitions() or add_mtd_device() is called. Fix this
by adding an error path. The memory is already released during a
remove.

MTD has recently been upgraded for 64-bit support, see commit

Some variables in MTD data structures which were 32-bit
became 64-bit. Namely, the 'size' field in 'struct mtd_info'
and the 'addr'/'len' fields in 'struct erase_info'. This
means we have to use 'do_div' to divide them.
This patch fixes the following linking error:
ERROR: "__umoddi3" [drivers/mtd/devices/m25p80.ko] undefined!
This patch changes divisions of 64-bit variable so that they use
'do_div'. This patch also change some print placeholders to
get rid of gcc warnings.

which added a chip erase command but called it "block erase". There are
already two block erase commands; blocks are 4KiB or 32KiB. There's also
a sector erase (usually 64 KiB). Chip erase typically covers Megabytes.

Commit d0e8c47c58 ("m25p80.c extended jedec

break detection of all flashes.
The ext jedec id check was inserted into an if statement that lacked
braces, and it did not add the required braces. As such, the detection
routine always returns the first entry in the SPI flash list.

This adds a WRITE_VERIFY Kconfig option to the DataFlash driver,
closely mirroring the similar NAND and ONENAND options, giving
an option to disable some code that's currently always enabled.
Removing this step probably saves a millisecond or so per page
when writing data, which will add up quickly since these pages
are small (the largest is 1 KiB). It doesn't seem to add a
lot in terms of reliability, and wouldn't detect errors which
crop up when transferring data to the on-chip SRAM buffer.

The wrong version of the "teach dataflash about binary density" patch
just got merged (v2 not v3) ... this restores the missing updates:
* Fix the cmdlinepart *regression* that caused testing failures (!!)
by restoring the original part labels in relevant cases.
* Don't reference things that don't exist (!)
- An opcode that doesn't even exist for DataFlash
- The part is "at45db642" not "at45db641"
- ID zero in this JEDEC table
* Make the JEDEC probe routine report and handle errors better:
- If the SPI calls fail, return the error codes.
- Don't depend on ordering of table entries.
- Unrecognized ids are different from parts that have no ID.
We won't actually know how to handle them correctly; display
the ID and ignore the chip.
* Move the original block comment about the "legacy" chip ID scheme
back next to the code to which it applies ... not next to the new
JEDEC query code, which uses an entirely different strategy.
* Don't print a guessed erasesize; /proc/mtd has the real value.
And add a few more comments.

Update chip ID tables in m25p80 to handle more SPI flash chips, matching
datasheets. All of these can use the same core operations and are newer
chips that support the JEDEC "read id" instruction:
- Atmel AT25 and AT26 (seven chips)
- Spansion S25SL (five chips)
- SST 25VF (four chips)
- ST M25, M45 (five more chips)
- Winbond W25X series (seven chips)
That JEDEC instruction is now used, either to support a sanity check on the
platform data holding board configuration data, or to determine chip type
when it's not included in platform data. In fact, boards that don't need a
standard partition table may not need that platform data any more.
For chips that support 4KiB erase units, use that smaller block size instead
of the larger size (usually 64KiB); it's less wasteful. (Tested on W25X80.)

I would welcome test reports for these files. I am fine with removing
the untested files from the patch if the general opinion is that these
changes aren't safe. The tested part would still be nice to have.
Note that this patch depends on another header fixup patch I submitted

Over the years there was a slow trickle of complaints against the readahead
code. Most of them concerned performance, Peter Zijlstra stumbled over it
when working unrelated changes and I believe there was an actual bug report.
Oh, Andrew Morton also complained about duplicating code from mm/readahead.c.
It is just not worth it. On flash media like usb sticks, readahead will
make things go slow - very slow. On spinning disks, readahead may be a
win, but this is definitely not the place to add it.

After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h
recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes.
There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need
anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for
macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the
course of cleaning it up.
To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only
removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble.
Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha,

allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all

introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted
by unnecessarily included header files).

Make it possible to disable the block layer. Not all embedded devices require
it, some can make do with just JFFS2, NFS, ramfs, etc - none of which require
the block layer to be present.
This patch does the following:
(*) Introduces CONFIG_BLOCK to disable the block layer, buffering and blockdev
support.
(*) Adds dependencies on CONFIG_BLOCK to any configuration item that controls
an item that uses the block layer. This includes:
(*) Block I/O tracing.
(*) Disk partition code.
(*) All filesystems that are block based, eg: Ext3, ReiserFS, ISOFS.
(*) The SCSI layer. As far as I can tell, even SCSI chardevs use the
block layer to do scheduling. Some drivers that use SCSI facilities -
such as USB storage - end up disabled indirectly from this.
(*) Various block-based device drivers, such as IDE and the old CDROM
drivers.
(*) MTD blockdev handling and FTL.
(*) JFFS - which uses set_bdev_super(), something it could avoid doing by
taking a leaf out of JFFS2's book.
(*) Makes most of the contents of linux/blkdev.h, linux/buffer_head.h and
linux/elevator.h contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK being set. sector_div() is,
however, still used in places, and so is still available.
(*) Also made contingent are the contents of linux/mpage.h, linux/genhd.h and
parts of linux/fs.h.
(*) Makes a number of files in fs/ contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) Makes mm/bounce.c (bounce buffering) contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) set_page_dirty() doesn't call __set_page_dirty_buffers() if CONFIG_BLOCK
is not enabled.
(*) fs/no-block.c is created to hold out-of-line stubs and things that are
required when CONFIG_BLOCK is not set:
(*) Default blockdev file operations (to give error ENODEV on opening).
(*) Makes some /proc changes:
(*) /proc/devices does not list any blockdevs.
(*) /proc/diskstats and /proc/partitions are contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) Makes some compat ioctl handling contingent on CONFIG_BLOCK.
(*) If CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined, makes sys_quotactl() return -ENODEV if
given command other than Q_SYNC or if a special device is specified.
(*) In init/do_mounts.c, no reference is made to the blockdev routines if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not defined. This does not prohibit NFS roots or JFFS2.
(*) The bdflush, ioprio_set and ioprio_get syscalls can now be absent (return
error ENOSYS by way of cond_syscall if so).
(*) The seclvl_bd_claim() and seclvl_bd_release() security calls do nothing if
CONFIG_BLOCK is not set, since they can't then happen.

Trying to pass kernel command line arguments to block2mtd at boot-time does
not work currently. block2mtd_setup() is called so early that kmalloc()
fails nevermind being able to do open_bdev_excl() (which requires rootfs to
be mounted. This patch only saves the option string at the early boot stage,
and parses them later when block2mtd_init() is called. If open_bdev_excl()
fails, open_by_devnum(name_to_dev_t()) is tried instead, which makes it
possible to initialize the driver before rootfs has been mounted. Also gets
rid of the superfluous parse_name() that only checks if name is longer than
80 chars and copies it to a string that is not kfreed.
With this patch, I can boot statically compiled block2mtd, and mount jffs2
as rootfs (without modules or initrd), with lilo config like this:
root=/dev/mtdblock0
append="rootfstype=jffs2 block2mtd.block2mtd=/dev/hdc2,65536"
(Note that rootfstype=jffs2 is required, since the kernel only tries
filesystems without "nodev" attribute by default, and jffs is "nodev").
Compared to first version of this patch, this one does not copy the
parameters to the global buffer if init has already been called, and the
global array is marked as __initdata.
Compared to the second version of this patch, module build is fixed.
Compared to the third version of this patch, statically compiled block2mtd
driver with no boot-time parameter no longer gives spurious error 'cannot

Hopefully the last iteration on this!
The handling of out of band data on NAND was accompanied by tons of fruitless
discussions and halfarsed patches to make it work for a particular
problem. Sufficiently annoyed by I all those "I know it better" mails and the
resonable amount of discarded "it solves my problem" patches, I finally decided
to go for the big rework. After removing the _ecc variants of mtd read/write
functions the solution to satisfy the various requirements was to refactor the
read/write _oob functions in mtd.
The major change is that read/write_oob now takes a pointer to an operation
descriptor structure "struct mtd_oob_ops".instead of having a function with at
least seven arguments.
read/write_oob which should probably renamed to a more descriptive name, can do
the following tasks:
- read/write out of band data
- read/write data content and out of band data
- read/write raw data content and out of band data (ecc disabled)
struct mtd_oob_ops has a mode field, which determines the oob handling mode.
Aside of the MTD_OOB_RAW mode, which is intended to be especially for
diagnostic purposes and some internal functions e.g. bad block table creation,
the other two modes are for mtd clients:
MTD_OOB_PLACE puts/gets the given oob data exactly to/from the place which is
described by the ooboffs and ooblen fields of the mtd_oob_ops strcuture. It's
up to the caller to make sure that the byte positions are not used by the ECC
placement algorithms.
MTD_OOB_AUTO puts/gets the given oob data automaticaly to/from the places in
the out of band area which are described by the oobfree tuples in the ecclayout
data structre which is associated to the devicee.
The decision whether data plus oob or oob only handling is done depends on the
setting of the datbuf member of the data structure. When datbuf == NULL then
the internal read/write_oob functions are selected, otherwise the read/write
data routines are invoked.
Tested on a few platforms with all variants. Please be aware of possible
regressions for your particular device / application scenario
Disclaimer: Any whining will be ignored from those who just contributed "hot
air blurb" and never sat down to tackle the underlying problem of the mess in
the NAND driver grown over time and the big chunk of work to fix up the
existing users. The problem was not the holiness of the existing MTD
interfaces. The problems was the lack of time to go for the big overhaul. It's
easy to add more mess to the existing one, but it takes alot of effort to go
for a real solution.
Improvements and bugfixes are welcome!

There's a mem leak in drivers/mtd/devices/block2mtd.c::block2mtd_setup()
We can leak 'name' allocated with kmalloc in 'parse_name' if leave via
the 'parse_err' macro since it contains a return but doesn't do any
freeing.
Spotted by coverity checker as bug 615.

There are two code paths in drivers/mtd/devices/phram.c::phram_setup() that
will leak memory.
Memory is allocated to the variable 'name' with kmalloc() by the
parse_name() function, but if we leave by way of the parse_err() macro,
then that memory is never kfree()'d, nor is it ever used with
register_device() so it won't be freed later either - leak.
Found by the Coverity checker as #593 - simple fix below.

Expand the parameter parsing for block2mtd. It now accepts:
Ki, Mi, Gi - the official prefixes for binary multiples,
see http://physics.nist.gov/cuu/Units/binary.html,
ki - mistake on my side and analog to "k" for decimal multiples,
KiB, MiB, GiB - for people that prefer to add a "B" for byte,
kiB - combination of the above.
There were complaints about not accepting "k" for 1024. This has long
been common practice, but is known to lead to confusion. Hence the new
SI units and hence block2mtd only accepts units that cannot be confused
with decimal units. Diverging from common practice doesn't always please
people, even if the change is for the better.

Remove the "inline" keyword from a bunch of big functions in the kernel with
the goal of shrinking it by 30kb to 40kb

This collects some small SPI patches that seem to be missing from the MM tree:
- spi_butterfly kbuild hooks got dropped somehow; this restores them
- quick fix for a (theoretical?) m25p80_write() oops noted by Andrew
- quick fix for a potential config-specific oops for mtd_dataflash()
- minor doc tweaks

This makes the SPI core and its users access transfers in the SPI message
structure as linked list not as an array, as discussed on LKML.
From: David Brownell <dbrownell@users.sourceforge.net>
Updates including doc, bugfixes to the list code, add
spi_message_add_tail(). Plus, initialize things _before_ grabbing the
locks in some cases (in case it grows more expensive). This also merges
some bitbang updates of mine that didn't yet make it into the mm tree.

This was originally a driver for the ST M25P80 SPI flash. It's been
updated slightly to handle other M25P series chips.
For many of these chips, the specific type could be probed, but for now
this just requires static setup with flash_platform_data that lists the
chip type (size, format) and any default partitioning to use.

This is a conversion of the AT91rm9200 DataFlash MTD driver to use the
lightweight SPI framework, and no longer be AT91-specific. It compiles
down to less than 3KBytes on ARM.
The driver allows board-specific init code to provide platform_data with
the relevant MTD partitioning information, and hotplugs.
This version has been lightly tested. Its parent at91_dataflash driver has
been pretty well banged on, although kernel.org JFFS2 dataflash support was
acting broken the last time I tried it.
