51a09d8f9a perf ftrace: Detect workload failure
Currently there's no error message prompted if we failed to start
workload. And we still get some trace which is confusing. Let's tell
users what happened.

Committer testing:

Before:

6b3e0e2e04 perf tools: Support CAP_PERFMON capability
Extend error messages to mention CAP_PERFMON capability as an option to
substitute CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability for secure system performance
monitoring and observability operations. Make
perf_event_paranoid_check() and __cmd_ftrace() to be aware of
CAP_PERFMON capability.

CAP_PERFMON implements the principle of least privilege for performance
monitoring and observability operations (POSIX IEEE 1003.1e 2.2.2.39
principle of least privilege: A security design principle that states
that a process or program be granted only those privileges (e.g.,
capabilities) necessary to accomplish its legitimate function, and only
for the time that such privileges are actually required)

For backward compatibility reasons access to perf_events subsystem remains
open for CAP_SYS_ADMIN privileged processes but CAP_SYS_ADMIN usage for
secure perf_events monitoring is discouraged with respect to CAP_PERFMON
capability.

Committer testing:

Using a libcap with this patch:

  diff --git a/libcap/include/uapi/linux/capability.h b/libcap/include/uapi/linux/capability.h
  index 78b2fd4c8a95..89b5b0279b60 100644

  +#define CAP_LAST_CAP         CAP_PERFMON

   #define cap_valid(x) ((x) >= 0 && (x) <= CAP_LAST_CAP)

Note that using '38' in place of 'cap_perfmon' works to some degree with
an old libcap, its only when cap_get_flag() is called that libcap
performs an error check based on the maximum value known for
capabilities that it will fail.

This makes determining the default of perf_event_attr.exclude_kernel to
fail, as it can't determine if CAP_PERFMON is in place.

Using 'perf top -e cycles' avoids the default check and sets
perf_event_attr.exclude_kernel to 1.

As root, with a libcap supporting CAP_PERFMON:

  # groupadd perf_users
  # adduser perf -g perf_users
  # mkdir ~perf/bin
  # cp ~acme/bin/perf ~perf/bin/
  # chgrp perf_users ~perf/bin/perf
  # setcap "cap_perfmon,cap_sys_ptrace,cap_syslog=ep" ~perf/bin/perf
  # getcap ~perf/bin/perf

  # ls -la ~perf/bin/perf
  -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root perf_users 16968552 Apr  9 13:10 /home/perf/bin/perf

cf30ae726c perf ftrace: Fix failure to set cpumask when only one cpu is present
The buffer containing the string used to set cpumask is overwritten at
the end of the string later in cpu_map__snprint_mask due to not enough
memory space, when there is only one cpu.

And thus causes the following failure:

  $ perf ftrace ls
  failed to reset ftrace
  $

This patch fixes the calculation of the cpumask string size.

63cd02d84b perf ftrace: Append an EOL when write tracing files
Before this change, the '--graph-funcs', '--nograph-funcs' and
'--trace-funcs' options didn't work as expected when the <func> doesn't
exist. Because the kernel side hid possible errors.

  $ sudo ./perf ftrace -a --graph-depth 1 --graph-funcs abcdefg
   0)   0.140 us    |  rcu_all_qs();
   3)   0.304 us    |  mutex_unlock();
   0)   0.153 us    |  find_vma();
   3)   0.088 us    |  __fsnotify_parent();
   0)   6.145 us    |  handle_mm_fault();
   3)   0.089 us    |  fsnotify();
   3)   0.161 us    |  __sb_end_write();
   3)   0.710 us    |  SyS_close();
   3)   7.848 us    |  exit_to_usermode_loop();

On the example above, I specified the function filter 'abcdefg' but all
functions are enabled. The expected result is for all functions to be
filtered, since there is no such function ('abcdefg')

The original fix is to make the kernel support '\0' as end of string:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/1/16/116

But above fix cannot be compatible with old kernels. Then Namhyung Kim
suggest adding a space after function name.

This patch will append an '\n' when write tracing file. After this fix,
the perf will report correct error state. Also let it print an error if
reset_tracing_files() fails.

Committer testing:

Now it prints:

  # perf ftrace -a --graph-depth 1 --graph-funcs abcdefg
  failed to set tracing filters
  #

And for an existing function:

  # perf ftrace -a --graph-depth 1 --graph-funcs SyS_open
   3)               |  SyS_open() {
   3) ! 494.899 us  |  }
   0) + 23.910 us   |  SyS_open();
   1) + 17.115 us   |  SyS_open();
   1) + 13.900 us   |  SyS_open();
   ------------------------------------------
   3)  qemu-sy-2817  =>  pickup-1290

8e99b6d453 tools include: Adopt strstarts() from the kernel
Replacing prefixcmp(), same purpose, inverted result, so standardize on
the kernel variant, to reduce silly differences among tools/ and the
kernel sources, making it easier for people to work in both codebases.

And then doing:

	if (strstarts(option, "no-"))

Looks clearer than doing:

	if (!prefixcmp(option, "no-"))

To figure out if option starts witn "no-".

78b83e8b12 perf ftrace: Add option for function filtering
The -T/--trace-funcs and -N/--notrace-funcs options are to specify
functions to enable/disable tracing dynamically.

The -G/--graph-funcs and -g/--nograph-funcs options are to set filters
for function graph tracer.

For example, to trace fault handling functions only:

  $ sudo perf ftrace -T *fault hello
   0)               |  __do_page_fault() {
   0)               |    handle_mm_fault() {
   0)   2.117 us    |      __handle_mm_fault();
   0)   3.627 us    |    }
   0)   7.811 us    |  }
   0)               |  __do_page_fault() {
   0)               |    handle_mm_fault() {
   0)   2.014 us    |      __handle_mm_fault();
   0)   2.424 us    |    }
   0)   2.951 us    |  }
   ...

To trace all functions executed in __do_page_fault:

  $ sudo perf ftrace -G __do_page_fault hello
   2)               |  __do_page_fault() {
   3)   0.060 us    |    down_read_trylock();
   3)               |    find_vma() {
   3)   0.075 us    |      vmacache_find();
   3)   0.053 us    |      vmacache_update();
   3)   1.246 us    |    }
   3)               |    handle_mm_fault() {
   3)   0.063 us    |      __rcu_read_lock();
   3)   0.056 us    |      mem_cgroup_from_task();
   3)   0.057 us    |      __rcu_read_unlock();
   3)               |      __handle_mm_fault() {
   3)               |        filemap_map_pages() {
   3)   0.058 us    |          __rcu_read_lock();
   3)               |          alloc_set_pte() {
   ...

But don't want to show details in handle_mm_fault:

  $ sudo perf ftrace -G __do_page_fault -g handle_mm_fault hello
   3)               |  __do_page_fault() {
   3)   0.049 us    |    down_read_trylock();
   3)               |    find_vma() {
   3)   0.048 us    |      vmacache_find();
   3)   0.041 us    |      vmacache_update();
   3)   0.680 us    |    }
   3)   0.036 us    |    up_read();
   3)   4.547 us    |  } /* __do_page_fault */

b05d109398 perf ftrace: Add ftrace.tracer config option
Currently 'perf ftrace' command allows selecting 'function_graph' or
'function', defaulting to 'function_graph'.

Add ftrace.tracer config option to select the default tracer:

    # cat ~/.perfconfig
    [ftrace]
        tracer = function

    # perf ftrace usleep 123456 | head -10
      <...>-14450 [002] d... 10089.284231: finish_task_switch <-__schedule
      <...>-14450 [002] .... 10089.284232: finish_wait <-pipe_wait
      <...>-14450 [002] .... 10089.284232: mutex_lock <-pipe_wait
      <...>-14450 [002] .... 10089.284232: _cond_resched <-mutex_lock

Committer notes:

Retesting it with invalid variables, invalid values for ftrace.tracer,
and a valid one:

  # cat ~/.perfconfig
  [ftrace]
        trace = function
  # perf ftrace usleep 1
  Error: wrong config key-value pair ftrace.trace=function
  # cat ~/.perfconfig
  [ftrace]
        tracer = functin
  # perf ftrace usleep 1
  Please select "function_graph" (default) or "function"
  Error: wrong config key-value pair ftrace.tracer=functin
  # cat ~/.perfconfig
  [ftrace]
        tracer = function
  # perf ftrace usleep 1 | head -5
          <idle>-0     [000] d...  3855.820847: switch_mm_irqs_off <-__schedule
           <...>-18550 [000] d...  3855.820849: finish_task_switch <-__schedule
           <...>-18550 [000] d...  3855.820851: smp_irq_work_interrupt <-irq_work_interrupt

bf062bd20e perf ftrace: Remove needless code setting default tracer
As a result of commit a3497642c261 ("perf ftrace: Make 'function_graph'
be the default tracer") the ftrace.tracer variable can't be NULL but the
other code setting default tracer remained.

d01f4e8db2 perf ftrace: Introduce new 'ftrace' tool
The 'perf ftrace' command is a simple wrapper of kernel's ftrace
functionality. It only supports single thread tracing currently and
just reads trace_pipe in text and then write it to stdout.

Committer notes:

Testing it:

  # perf ftrace -f function_graph usleep 123456
