With the common clock interface, there is no way to provide the
"clock_source" sysfs attribute for the samsung serial ports. Given that
this file was purely informational and had fixed contents, we have reason
to believe that no user space programs were relying on it.

As Ilya Zykov identified in his patch 'PROBLEM: Race condition in
tty buffer's function flush_to_ldisc()', a race condition exists
which allows a parallel flush_to_ldisc() to flush and free the tty
flip buffers while those buffers are in-use. For example,
CPU 0 | CPU 1 | CPU 2
| flush_to_ldisc() |
| grab spin lock |
tty_buffer_flush() | | flush_to_ldisc()
wait for spin lock | | wait for spin lock
| if (!test_and_set_bit(TTYP_FLUSHING)) |
| while (next flip buffer) |
| ... |
| drop spin lock |
grab spin lock | |
if (test_bit(TTYP_FLUSHING)) | |
set_bit(TTYP_FLUSHPENDING) | receive_buf() |
drop spin lock | |
| | grab spin lock
| | if (!test_and_set_bit(TTYP_FLUSHING))
| | if (test_bit(TTYP_FLUSHPENDING))
| | __tty_buffer_flush()
CPU 2 has just flushed and freed all tty flip buffers while CPU 1 is
transferring data from the head flip buffer.
The original patch was rejected under the assumption that parallel
flush_to_ldisc() was not possible. Because of necessary changes to
the workqueue api, work items can execute in parallel on SMP.
This patch differs slightly from the original patch by testing for
a pending flush _after_ each receive_buf(), since TTYP_FLUSHPENDING
can only be set while the lock is dropped around receive_buf().

Some devices have too few buttons, which it makes it hard to have
a reset combo that won't trigger automatically. As such a
timeout functionality that requires the combination to be held for
a given amount of time before triggering is introduced.
If a key combo is recognized and held for a 'timeout' amount of time,
the system triggers a reset. If the timeout value is omitted the
driver simply ignores the functionality.

In DMA support, The received data is not pushed to tty until the DMA buffer
is filled. But some megabyte rate chips such as BT expect fast response and
data should be pushed immediately. In order to fix this issue, We suggest
the use of the timer for polling DMA buffer.
In our test, no data loss occurred at high-baudrate as compared with interrupt-
driven (We tested with 3Mbps).
We changes:
- We add timer for polling. If we set poll_timer to 10, every 10ms,
timer handler checks the residue in the dma buffer and transfer data
to the tty. Also, last_residue is updated for the next polling.
- poll_timeout is used to prevent the timer's system cost.
If poll_timeout is set to 3000 and no data is received in 3 seconds,
we inactivate poll timer and driver falls back to interrupt-driven.
When data is received again in FIFO and UART irq is occurred, we switch
back to DMA mode and start polling.
- We use consistent DMA mappings to avoid from the frequent cache operation
of the timer function for default.
- pl011_dma_rx_chars is modified. the pending size is recalculated because
data can be taken by polling.
- the polling time is adjusted if dma rx poll is enabled but no rate is
specified. Ideal polling interval to push 1 character at every interval
is the reciprocal of 'baud rate / 10 line bits per character / 1000 ms
per sec'. But It is very aggressive to system. Experimentally,
'10000000 / baud' is suitable to receive dozens of characters. the poll rate
can be specified statically by dma_rx_poll_rate of the platform data as well.
Changes compared to v1:
- Use of consistent DMA mappings.
- Added dma_rx_poll_rate in platform data to specify the polling interval.
- Added dma_rx_poll_timeout in platform data to specify the polling timeout.
Changes compared to v2:
- Use of consistent DMA mappings for default.
- Added dma_rx_poll_enable in platform data to adjust the polling time
according to the baud rate.
- remove unnecessary lock from the polling function.

during early resume, before the serial port itself is resumed. Such

This adds a check to the console putchar function to drop characters

Consider a situation where I have an ARM based system
and therefore no legacy ports. Say, I have two
memory-mapped ports. I use device tree to describe the
ports. What would be the config options I set so that
I get only the two ports in my system? I do not want
legacy ports being created automatically and I want
it to be flexible enough that it creates the devices
based only on the device tree. I expected setting
SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS = 0 to work because the
description said, "Set this to the maximum number of
serial ports you want the kernel to register at boot
time." Unfortunately, even though SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS
was set to the default value of 4, I did not get any device
nodes (because SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS was 0). This
is what this change is addressing.
SERIAL_8250_NR_UARTS controls the maximum number of ports
you can support. SERIAL_8250_RUNTIME_UARTS specifies the
number of ports you want to create automatically for legacy
ports at boot time. All other ports will be created
when serial8250_register_port is called (and if does not exceed
the total number of supported ports as specified by

In 3.7 the 8250 module name was changed unintentionally from 8250 to
8250_core by commit 835d844d1a
(8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe). We then had to
re-introduce the old module options to ensure the old good
8250.nr_uart & co. still work. This can be done only by a very dirty
hack and we did it in f2b8dfd9e4
(serial: 8250: Keep 8250.<xxxx> module options functional after driver
rename).
That is so damn ugly so that I decided to revert to the old module
name and deprecate the new 8250_core options present in 3.7 and 3.8
only. The deprecation will happen in the following patch.

introduced a potential NULL dereference to some drivers. In
particular, when the device is used as a console, incoming bytes can
kill the box. This is caused by removed checks for TTY against NULL.
It happened because it was unclear to me why the checks were there. I
assumed them superfluous because the interrupts were unbound or
otherwise stopped. But this is not the case for consoles for these
drivers, as was pointed out by David Miller.
Now, this patch re-introduces the checks (at this point we check
port->state, not the tty proper, as we do not care about tty pointers
anymore). For both of the drivers, we place the check below the
handling of break signal so that sysrq can actually work. (One needs
to issue a break and then sysrq key within the following 5 seconds.)
We do not change sc26xx, sunhv, and sunsu here because they behave the
same as before. People having that hardware should fix the driver
eventually, however. They always could unconditionally dereference tty
in receive_chars, port->state in uart_handle_dcd_change, and
up->port.state->port.tty.
There is perhaps more to fix in all those drivers, but they are at
least in a state they were before.

tty_perform_flush() can deadlock when called while holding
a line discipline reference. By definition, all ldisc drivers
hold a ldisc reference, so calls originating from ldisc drivers
must not block for a ldisc reference.
The deadlock can occur when:
CPU 0 | CPU 1
|
tty_ldisc_ref(tty) |
.... | <line discipline halted>
tty_ldisc_ref_wait(tty) |
|
CPU 0 cannot progess because it cannot obtain an ldisc reference
with the line discipline has been halted (thus no new references
are granted).
CPU 1 cannot progress because an outstanding ldisc reference
has not been released.
An in-tree call-tree audit of tty_perform_flush() [1] shows 5
ldisc drivers calling tty_perform_flush() indirectly via
n_tty_ioctl_helper() and 2 ldisc drivers calling directly.
A single tty driver safely uses the function.

is possible for one ldisc to be halted, and before the second
ldisc can be halted, a concurrent write schedules buffer work on
the first ldisc. This can lead to an access-after-free error when
the scheduled buffer work starts on the closed ldisc.
Prevent subsequent use after halt by performing each stage
of the halt on both ttys.

In preparation for destructing and freeing the tty, the line discipline
must first be brought to an inactive state before it can be destructed.
This line discipline shutdown must:
- disallow new users of the ldisc
- wait for existing ldisc users to finish
- only then, cancel/flush their pending/running work
Factor tty_ldisc_wait_idle() from tty_set_ldisc() and tty_ldisc_kill()
to ensure this shutdown order.
Failure to provide this guarantee can result in scheduled work
running after the tty has already been freed, as indicated in the
following log message:

Make sure we do not make tty-driver callbacks or wait for port to drain
on uninitialised ports (e.g. when open failed) in
tty_port_close_start().
No callback, such as flush_buffer or wait_until_sent, needs to be made
on a port that has never been opened. Neither does it make much sense to
add drain delay for an uninitialised port.
Currently a drain delay of up to two seconds could be added when a tty

Move HUPCL handling to port shutdown so that DTR is dropped also on hang
up (tty_port_close is a noop for hung-up ports).
Also do not try to drop DTR for uninitialised ports where it has never
been raised (e.g. after a failed open).
Note that this is also the current behaviour of serial-core.
Nine drivers currently call tty_port_close_start directly (rather than
through tty_port_close) and seven of them lower DTR as part of their
close (if the port has been initialised). Fixup the remaining two
drivers so that it continues to be lowered also on normal (non-HUP)
close. [ Note that most of those other seven drivers did not expect DTR
to have been dropped by tty_port_close_start in the first place. ]

Concurrent access to tty->pgrp must be protected with tty->ctrl_lock.
Also, as noted in the comments, reading current->signal->tty is
safe because either,
1) current->signal->tty is assigned by current, or
2) current->signal->tty is set to NULL.

The tty driver can become stuck throttled due to race conditions
between throttle and unthrottle, when the decision to throttle
or unthrottle is conditional. The following example helps to
illustrate the race:
CPU 0 | CPU 1
|
if (condition A) |
| <processing such that A not true>
| if (!condition A)
| unthrottle()
throttle() |
|
Note the converse is also possible; ie.,
CPU 0 | CPU 1
|
| if (!condition A)
<processing such that A true> |
if (condition A) |
throttle() |
| unthrottle()
|
Add new throttle/unthrottle functions based on the familiar model
of task state and schedule/wake. For example,
while (1) {
tty_set_flow_change(tty, TTY_THROTTLE_SAFE);
if (!condition)
break;
if (!tty_throttle_safe(tty))
break;
}
__tty_set_flow_change(tty, 0);
In this example, if an unthrottle occurs after the condition is
evaluated but before tty_throttle_safe(), then tty_throttle_safe()
will return non-zero, looping and forcing the re-evaluation of
condition.

An exiting session leader can hang if a foreground process is
blocking for line discipline i/o, eg. in n_tty_read(). This happens
because the blocking reader is holding an ldisc reference (indicating
the line discipline is in-use) which prevents __tty_hangup() from
recycling the line discipline. Although waiters are woken before
attempting to gain exclusive access for changing the ldisc, the
blocking reader in this case will not exit the i/o loop since it
has not yet received SIGHUP (because it has not been sent).
Instead, perform signalling first, then recycle the line discipline.

The code in 8250.c for detecting ARM/XScale UARTs says:
* Try writing and reading the UART_IER_UUE bit (b6).
* If it works, this is probably one of the Xscale platform's
* internal UARTs.
If the above passes, it then goes on to:
* It's an Xscale.
* We'll leave the UART_IER_UUE bit set to 1 (enabled).
However, the CH352 uses the UART_IER_UUE as the LOWPOWER function,
so it is readable and writable. According to the datasheet:
"LOWPOWER:When the bit is 1, close the internal benchmark
clock of serial port to set into low-power status.
So it essentially gets mis-detected as Xscale, and gets
powered down in the process. The device in question where
this was seen is listed by lspci as:

With the new OF DMA binding, it is possible to completely avoid the
need for platform_data for configuring a DMA channel. In cases where the
platform has already been converted, calling dma_request_slave_channel
should get all the necessary information from the device tree.
This also adds a binding document specific to the pl011 controller,
and extends the generic primecell binding to mention "dmas" and other
common properties.
Like the patch that converts the dw_dma controller, this is completely
untested and is looking for someone to try it out.

The Kconfig symbol SERIAL_S3C2412 got removed in commit
da121506eb ("serial: samsung: merge
probe() function from all SoC specific extensions"). But it also added a
last reference to that symbol. The commit and the tree make clear that
CPU_S3C2412 should have been used instead.

With commit 835d844d1 (8250_pnp: do pnp probe before legacy probe), the
8250 driver was renamed to 8250_core. This means any existing usage of
the 8259.<xxxx> module parameters or as a kernel command line switch is
now broken, as the 8250_core driver doesn't parse options belonging to
something called "8250".
To solve this, we redefine the module options in a dummy function using
a redefined MODULE_PARAM_PREFX when built into the kernel. In the case
where we're building as a module, we provide an alias to the old 8250
name. The dummy function prevents compiler errors due to global variable
redefinitions that happen as part of the module_param_ macro expansions.

The InsydeH2O BIOS (version dated 09/12/2011) has the following in
its pnp resouces for its serial ports:
$ cat /sys/bus/pnp/devices/00:0b/resources
state = active
io disabled
irq disabled
We do not check if the resources are disabled, and create a bogus
ttyS* device. Since commit 835d844d1a (8250_pnp: do pnp probe
before legacy probe) we get a bogus ttyS0, which prevents the legacy
probe from detecting it.
Note, the BIOS can also be upgraded, fixing this problem, but for people
who can't do that, this fix is needed.

I've managed to find an 8 port version of the card 4 port card which was discussed here:
http://marc.info/?l=linux-serial&m=120760744205314&w=2
Looking back at that thread there were two issues in the original patch.
1) The I/O ports for the UARTs are within BAR2 not BAR0. This can been seen in the original post.
2) A serial quirk isn't needed as these cards have no memory in BAR0 which makes pci_plx9050_init just return.
This patch fixes the 4 port support to use BAR2, removes the bogus quirk and adds support for the 8 port card.

mpc512x platform clock code names PSC clocks as "pscX_mclk" but
the driver tries to get "pscX_clk" clock and this results in
errors like:
mpc52xx-psc-uart 80011700.psc: Failed to get PSC clock entry!
The problem appears when opening ttyPSC devices other than the
system's serial console. Since getting and enabling the PSC clock
fails, uart port startup doesn't succeed and tty flag TTY_IO_ERROR
remains set causing further errors in tty ioctls, i.e.
'strace stty -F /dev/ttyPSC1' shows:

When taking an address of an extern array, gcc quite naturally should be
able to say "an address of an object can never be NULL" and just
optimize away the test entirely.
However, the new alternate sysrq reset code (commit 154b7a489a:
"Input: sysrq - allow specifying alternate reset sequence") did exactly
that, and declared platform_sysrq_reset_seq[] as a weak array, and
expecting that testing the address of the array would show whether it
actually got linked against something or not.
And that doesn't work with all gcc versions. Clearly it works with
*some* versions of gcc, and maybe it's even supposed to work, but it
really is a very fragile concept.
So instead of testing the address of the weak variable, just create a
weak instance of that array that is empty. If some platform then has a
real platform_sysrq_reset_seq[] that overrides our weak one, the linker
will switch to that one, and it all works without any run-time
conditionals at all.

ioremap can't be used to map ring pages on ARM because it uses device
memory caching attributes (MT_DEVICE*).
Introduce a Xen specific abstraction to map ring pages, called
xen_remap, that is defined as ioremap on x86 (no behavioral changes).
On ARM it explicitly calls __arm_ioremap with the right caching
attributes: MT_MEMORY.

1. Currently mxser_probe() and mxser_module_init() ignore errors
that can happen in tty_port_register_device().
2. mxser_module_init() does not deallocate resources allocated in mxser_get_ISA_conf()
if mxser_initbrd() failed.
The patch adds proper error handling in all the cases.
Also it moves free_irq() from mxser_release_ISA_res() to mxser_board_remove(),
since it makes mxser_release_ISA_res() a counterpart for mxser_get_ISA_conf(),
while free_irq() is relevant to both ISA and PCI boards.

On http://vladz.devzero.fr/013_ptmx-timing.php, we can see how to find
out length of a password using timestamps of /dev/ptmx. It is
documented in "Timing Analysis of Keystrokes and Timing Attacks on
SSH". To avoid that problem, do not update time when reading
from/writing to a TTY.
I am afraid of regressions as this is a behavior we have since 0.97
and apps may expect the time to be current, e.g. for monitoring
whether there was a change on the TTY. Now, there is no change. So
this would better have a lot of testing before it goes upstream.

commit 9ec1882df2 (tty: serial: imx: console write routing is unsafe
on SMP) introduced a recursive locking bug in imx_console_write().
The callchain is:
imx_rxint()
spin_lock_irqsave(&sport->port.lock,flags);
...
uart_handle_sysrq_char();
sysrq_function();
printk();
imx_console_write();
spin_lock_irqsave(&sport->port.lock,flags); <--- DEAD
The bad news is that the kernel debugging facilities can dectect the
problem, but the printks never surface on the serial console for
obvious reasons.
There is a similar issue with oops_in_progress. If the kernel crashes
we really don't want to be stuck on the lock and unable to tell what
happened.
In general most UP originated drivers miss these checks and nobody
ever notices because CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING seems to be still ignored by
a large number of developers.
The solution is to avoid locking in the sysrq case and trylock in the
oops_in_progress case.
This scheme is used in other drivers as well and it would be nice if
we could move this to a common place, so the usual copy/paste/modify
bugs can be avoided.
Now there is another issue with this scheme:
CPU0 CPU1
printk()
rxint()
sysrq_detection() -> sets port->sysrq
return from interrupt
console_write()
if (port->sysrq)
avoid locking
port->sysrq is reset with the next receive character. So as long as
the port->sysrq is not reset and this can take an endless amount of
time if after the break no futher receive character follows, all
console writes happen unlocked.
While the current writer is protected against other console writers by
the console sem, it's unprotected against open/close or other
operations which fiddle with the port. That's what the above mentioned
commit tried to solve.
That's an issue in all drivers which use that scheme and unfortunately
there is no easy workaround. The only solution is to have a separate
indicator port->sysrq_cpu. uart_handle_sysrq_char() then sets it to
smp_processor_id() before calling into handle_sysrq() and resets it to
-1 after that. Then change the locking check to:
if (port->sysrq_cpu == smp_processor_id())
locked = 0;
else if (oops_in_progress)
locked = spin_trylock_irqsave(port->lock, flags);
else
spin_lock_irqsave(port->lock, flags);
That would force all other cpus into the spin_lock path. Problem
solved, but that's way beyond the scope of this fix and really wants
to be implemented in a common function which calls the uart specific
write function to avoid another gazillion of hard to debug
copy/paste/modify bugs.

approach. This allows to set the device online even if the

The PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) line discipline has developed a number of
unhealthy attachments to core tty data and functions, ultimately leading
to its breakage.
The previous patches fixed the crashing. This one reduces coupling further
by eliminating the timestamp parameter from the dcd_change ldisc method.
This reduces header file linkage and makes the extension more generic,
and the timestamp read is delayed only slightly, from just before the
ldisc->ops->dcd_change method call to just after.

When we switch from 256->512 byte font rendering mode, it means the
current contents of the screen is being reinterpreted. The bit that holds
the high bit of the 9-bit font, may have been previously set, and thus
the new font misrenders.
The problem case we see is grub2 writes spaces with the bit set, so it
ends up with data like 0x820, which gets reinterpreted into 0x120 char
which the font translates into G with a circumflex. This flashes up on
screen at boot and is quite ugly.
A current side effect of this patch though is that any rendering on the
screen changes color to a slightly darker color, but at least the screen
no longer corrupts.
v2: as suggested by hpa, always clear the attribute space, whether we
are are going to or from 512 chars.

fails because the pty is still locked. This is as designed.
However, pty_close() is still called for the slave pty which sets
TTY_OTHER_CLOSED in the master pty. This can cause the master open
to fail as well.
Use a common pattern in other tty drivers by setting TTY_IO_ERROR
until the open is successful and only closing the pty if not set.
Note: the master pty always closes regardless of whether the open
was successful, so that proper cleanup can occur.

There's no reason kgdb.h itself needs to include the 8250 serial port
header file. So push it down to the _very_ limited number of individual
drivers that need the values in that file, and fix up the places where
people really wanted serial_core.h and platform_device.h.

The "normal" spin lock that guards the N_TTY line discipline read section
is replaced by a raw spin lock.
On a PREEMP_RT system this prevents unwanted scheduling overhead when data is
read at the same time as data is being received: while RX IRQ threaded handling
is busy a TTY read call is performed from a RT priority > threaded IRQ priority.
The read call tries to take the read section spin lock (held by the threaded
IRQ) which blocks and causes a context switch to/from the threaded IRQ handler
until the spin lock is unlocked.

This change fixes a deadlock when the multiplexer is closed while there
are still client side ports open.
When the multiplexer is closed and there are active tty's it tries to
close them with tty_vhangup. This has a problem though, because
tty_vhangup needs the tty_lock. This patch changes it to unlock the
tty_lock before attempting the hangup and relocks afterwards. The
additional call to tty_port_tty_set is needed because otherwise the
port stays active because of the reference counter.
This change also exposed another problem that other code paths don't
expect that the multiplexer could have been closed. This patch also adds
checks for these cases in the gsmtty_ class of function that could be
called.
The documentation explicitly states that "first close all virtual ports
before closing the physical port" but we've found this to not always
reality in our field situations. The GPRS / UTMS modem sometimes crashes
and needs a power cycle in that case which means cleanly shutting down
everything is not always possible. This change makes it much more robust
for our situation where at least the system is recoverable with this patch
and doesn't hang in a deadlock situation inside the kernel.
The patch is against the long term support kernel (3.4.27) and should
apply cleanly to more recent branches. Tested with a Telit GE864-QUADV2
and Telit HE910 modem.

Dan Carpenter noticed a missing set of parentheses
around a multiple field addition.
https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/1/27/166
His original commit message:
There is a kind of precedence problem here, but it doesn't affect how
the code works because ->serial_signals is unsigned char. We want to
clear two flags here.
#define SerialSignal_RTS 0x20 /* Request to Send */
#define SerialSignal_DTR 0x80 /* Data Terminal Ready */
Without the parenthesis then it does:
info->serial_signals &= 0x5f;
With the parenthesis it does:
info->serial_signals &= 0xffffff5f;
info->serial_signals is an unsigned char so the two statements are
equivalent, but it's cleaner to add the parenthesis. In other dtr_rts()
functions the parenthesis are there so this makes it more consistent.
Other changes:
Convert all + uses to | for these bit operations.
Reorder the multiple fields for consistency.
Update the comments too.

This provides a console driver for the Goldfish virtual platform. The original
is from Arve with changes from Jun Nakajima and Tom Keel. This has been then
been ported to the current kernel and to the tty port mechanism by Alan Cox.
In the process it gained proper POSIX semantics and vhangup works. The default
name is not ttyS as this belongs to the 8250 driver. Instead ttyGFx is now used.
In the normal usage case the first port serves as a kernel logging console and
the second one carries various other data streams for the emulation.

When send break to the uart port, we always get 'frame error', but we
can not just reset receive fifo in such case, otherwise the sysrq cmd
will not be received correctly.
When we handle sysrq output via pch_console_write, the priv lock has
already been taken so no need to take the lock in pch_console_write.

When we use pch_uart as system console like 'console=ttyPCH0,115200',
then 'send break' to it. We'll encounter the deadlock on a cpu/core,
with interrupts disabled on the core. When we happen to have all irqs
affinity to cpu0 then the deadlock on cpu0 actually deadlock whole
system.
In pch_uart_interrupt, we have spin_lock_irqsave(&priv->lock, flags)
then call pch_uart_err_ir when break is received. Then the call to
dev_err would actually call to pch_console_write then we'll run into
another spin_lock(&priv->lock), with interrupts disabled.
So in the call sequence lead by pch_uart_interrupt, we should be
carefully to call functions that will 'print message to console' only
in case the uart port is not being used as serial console.

The root of problem is carelessly zeroing pointer(in function __tty_buffer_flush()),
when another thread can use it. It can be cause of "NULL pointer dereference".
Main idea of the patch, this is never free last (struct tty_buffer) in the active buffer.
Only flush the data for ldisc(buf->head->read = buf->head->commit).
At that moment driver can collect(write) data in buffer without conflict.
It is repeat behavior of flush_to_ldisc(), only without feeding data to ldisc.

The option allows you to remove TTY and compile without errors. This
saves space on systems that won't support TTY interfaces anyway.
bloat-o-meter output is below.
The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on
TTY" to various serial devices and similar drivers that require the TTY
layer. Ideally, these dependencies would occur on a common intermediate
symbol such as SERIO, but most drivers "select SERIO" rather than
"depends on SERIO", and "select" does not respect dependencies.
bloat-o-meter output comparing our previous minimal to new minimal by
removing TTY. The list is filtered to not show removed entries with awk
'$3 != "-"' as the list was very long.

Function reset_buffer_flags() also invoked during the ioctl(...,TCFLSH,..).
At the time of request we can have full buffers and throttled driver too.
If we don't unthrottle driver, we can get forever throttled driver, because,
after request, we will have empty buffers and throttled driver and
there is no place to unthrottle driver.
It simple reproduce with "pty" pair then one side sleep on tty->write_wait,
and other side do ioctl(...,TCFLSH,..). Then there is no place to do writers wake up.
