18915b5873 ext4: prohibit fstrim in norecovery mode
The ext4 fstrim implementation uses the block bitmaps to find free space
that can be discarded. If we haven't replayed the journal, the bitmaps
will be stale and we absolutely *cannot* use stale metadata to zap the
underlying storage.

5e86bdda41 ext4: cleanup bh release code in ext4_ind_remove_space()
Currently, we are releasing the indirect buffer where we are done with
it in ext4_ind_remove_space(), so we can see the brelse() and
BUFFER_TRACE() everywhere. It seems fragile and hard to read, and we
may probably forget to release the buffer some day. This patch cleans
up the code by putting of the code which releases the buffers to the
end of the function.

674a2b2723 ext4: brelse all indirect buffer in ext4_ind_remove_space()
All indirect buffers get by ext4_find_shared() should be released no
mater the branch should be freed or not. But now, we forget to release
the lower depth indirect buffers when removing space from the same
higher depth indirect block. It will lead to buffer leak and futher
more, it may lead to quota information corruption when using old quota,
consider the following case.

 - Create and mount an empty ext4 filesystem without extent and quota
   features,
 - quotacheck and enable the user & group quota,
 - Create some files and write some data to them, and then punch hole
   to some files of them, it may trigger the buffer leak problem
   mentioned above.
 - Disable quota and run quotacheck again, it will create two new
   aquota files and write the checked quota information to them, which
   probably may reuse the freed indirect block(the buffer and page
   cache was not freed) as data block.
 - Enable quota again, it will invoke
   vfs_load_quota_inode()->invalidate_bdev() to try to clean unused
   buffers and pagecache. Unfortunately, because of the buffer of quota
   data block is still referenced, quota code cannot read the up to date
   quota info from the device and lead to quota information corruption.

This problem can be reproduced by xfstests generic/231 on ext3 file
system or ext4 file system without extent and quota features.

This patch fix this problem by releasing the missing indirect buffers,
in ext4_ind_remove_space().

6c7328400e ext4: report real fs size after failed resize
Currently when the file system resize using ext4_resize_fs() fails it
will report into log that "resized filesystem to <requested block
count>". However this may not be true in the case of failure. Use the
current block count as returned by ext4_blocks_count() to report the
block count.

Additionally, report a warning that "error occurred during file system
resize"

d64264d621 ext4: add missing brelse() in add_new_gdb_meta_bg()
Currently in add_new_gdb_meta_bg() there is a missing brelse of gdb_bh
in case ext4_journal_get_write_access() fails.
Additionally kvfree() is missing in the same error path. Fix it by
moving the ext4_journal_get_write_access() before the ext4 sb update as
Ted suggested and release n_group_desc and gdb_bh in case it fails.

1dc1097ff6 ext4: avoid panic during forced reboot
When admin calls "reboot -f" - i.e., does a hard system reboot by
directly calling reboot(2) - ext4 filesystem mounted with errors=panic
can panic the system. This happens because the underlying device gets
disabled without unmounting the filesystem and thus some syscall running
in parallel to reboot(2) can result in the filesystem getting IO errors.

This is somewhat surprising to the users so try improve the behavior by
switching to errors=remount-ro behavior when the system is running
reboot(2).

372a03e018 ext4: fix data corruption caused by unaligned direct AIO
Ext4 needs to serialize unaligned direct AIO because the zeroing of
partial blocks of two competing unaligned AIOs can result in data
corruption.

However it decides not to serialize if the potentially unaligned aio is
past i_size with the rationale that no pending writes are possible past
i_size. Unfortunately if the i_size is not block aligned and the second
unaligned write lands past i_size, but still into the same block, it has
the potential of corrupting the previous unaligned write to the same
block.

This is (very simplified) reproducer from Frank

    // 41472 = (10 * 4096) + 512
    // 37376 = 41472 - 4096

    ftruncate(fd, 41472);
    io_prep_pwrite(iocbs[0], fd, buf[0], 4096, 37376);
    io_prep_pwrite(iocbs[1], fd, buf[1], 4096, 41472);

    io_submit(io_ctx, 1, &iocbs[1]);
    io_submit(io_ctx, 1, &iocbs[2]);

    io_getevents(io_ctx, 2, 2, events, NULL);

Without this patch the 512B range from 40960 up to the start of the
second unaligned write (41472) is going to be zeroed overwriting the data
written by the first write. This is a data corruption.

 fscrypt, and we're now using a shared git tree. So we've updated
 MAINTAINERS accordingly, and I'm doing the pull request this time.

 The actual changes for v5.1 are:

 - Remove the fs-specific kconfig options like CONFIG_EXT4_ENCRYPTION and
   make fscrypt support for all fscrypt-capable filesystems be controlled
   by CONFIG_FS_ENCRYPTION, similar to how CONFIG_QUOTA works.

 - Improve error code for rename() and link() into encrypted directories.

7bd75230b4 ext4: fix bigalloc cluster freeing when hole punching under load
Ext4 may not free clusters correctly when punching holes in bigalloc
file systems under high load conditions. If it's not possible to
extend and restart the journal in ext4_ext_rm_leaf() when preparing to
remove blocks from a punched region, a retry of the entire punch
operation is triggered in ext4_ext_remove_space(). This causes a
partial cluster to be set to the first cluster in the extent found to
the right of the punched region. However, if the punch operation
prior to the retry had made enough progress to delete one or more
extents and a partial cluster candidate for freeing had already been
recorded, the retry would overwrite the partial cluster. The loss of
this information makes it impossible to correctly free the original
partial cluster in all cases.

This bug can cause generic/476 to fail when run as part of
xfstests-bld's bigalloc and bigalloc_1k test cases. The failure is
reported when e2fsck detects bad iblocks counts greater than expected
in units of whole clusters and also detects a number of negative block
bitmap differences equal to the iblocks discrepancy in cluster units.

This patch introduces one extra iterator variable to bio_for_each_segment_all(),
then we can allow bio_for_each_segment_all() to iterate over multi-page bvec.

Given it is just one mechannical & simple change on all bio_for_each_segment_all()

c9e716eb9b ext4: don't update s_rev_level if not required
Don't update the superblock s_rev_level during mount if it isn't
actually necessary, only if superblock features are being set by
the kernel. This was originally added for ext3 since it always
set the INCOMPAT_RECOVER and HAS_JOURNAL features during mount,
but this is not needed since no journal mode was added to ext4.

That will allow Geert to mount his 20-year-old ext2 rev 0.0 m68k

f96c3ac8df ext4: fix crash during online resizing
When computing maximum size of filesystem possible with given number of
group descriptor blocks, we forget to include s_first_data_block into
the number of blocks. Thus for filesystems with non-zero
s_first_data_block it can happen that computed maximum filesystem size
is actually lower than current filesystem size which confuses the code
and eventually leads to a BUG_ON in ext4_alloc_group_tables() hitting on
flex_gd->count == 0. The problem can be reproduced like:

truncate -s 100g /tmp/image
mkfs.ext4 -b 1024 -E resize=262144 /tmp/image 32768
mount -t ext4 -o loop /tmp/image /mnt
resize2fs /dev/loop0 262145
resize2fs /dev/loop0 300000

Fix the problem by properly including s_first_data_block into the
computed number of filesystem blocks.

The reason is that while swapping two inode, we swap the flags too.

a297b2fcee ext4: unlock unused_pages timely when doing writeback
In mpage_add_bh_to_extent(), when accumulated extents length is greater
than MAX_WRITEPAGES_EXTENT_LEN or buffer head's b_stat is not equal, we
will not continue to search unmapped area for this page, but note this
page is locked, and will only be unlocked in mpage_release_unused_pages()
after ext4_io_submit, if io also is throttled by blk-throttle or similar
io qos, we will hold this page locked for a while, it's unnecessary.

I think the best fix is to refactor mpage_add_bh_to_extent() to let it
return some hints whether to unlock this page, but given that we will
improve dioread_nolock later, we can let it done later, so currently
the simple fix would just call mpage_release_unused_pages() before
ext4_io_submit().

8fdd60f2ae Revert "ext4: use ext4_write_inode() when fsyncing w/o a journal"
This reverts commit ad211f3e94.

As Jan Kara pointed out, this change was unsafe since it means we lose
the call to sync_mapping_buffers() in the nojournal case. The
original point of the commit was avoid taking the inode mutex (since
it causes a lockdep warning in generic/113); but we need the mutex in
order to call sync_mapping_buffers().

The real fix to this problem was discussed here:

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20181025150540.259281-4-bvanassche@acm.org

The proposed patch was to fix a syzbot complaint, but the problem can
also demonstrated via "kvm-xfstests -c nojournal generic/113".
Multiple solutions were discused in the e-mail thread, but none have
landed in the kernel as of this writing. Anyway, commit
ad211f3e94 is absolutely the wrong way to suppress the lockdep, so
revert it.

e86807862e ext4: avoid kernel warning when writing the superblock to a dead device
The xfstests generic/475 test switches the underlying device with
dm-error while running a stress test. This results in a large number
of file system errors, and since we can't lock the buffer head when
marking the superblock dirty in the ext4_grp_locked_error() case, it's
possible the superblock to be !buffer_uptodate() without
buffer_write_io_error() being true.

We need to set buffer_uptodate() before we call mark_buffer_dirty() or
this will trigger a WARN_ON. It's safe to do this since the
superblock must have been properly read into memory or the mount would
have been successful. So if buffer_uptodate() is not set, we can
safely assume that this happened due to a failed attempt to write the
superblock.

 "This is the main pull request for block/storage for 4.21.

  Larger than usual, it was a busy round with lots of goodies queued up.
  Most notable is the removal of the old IO stack, which has been a long
  time coming. No new features for a while, everything coming in this
  week has all been fixes for things that were previously merged.

  This contains:

   - Use atomic counters instead of semaphores for mtip32xx (Arnd)

   - Cleanup of the mtip32xx request setup (Christoph)

   - Fix for circular locking dependency in loop (Jan, Tetsuo)

   - bcache (Coly, Guoju, Shenghui)

      * host and target support for NVMe over TCP
      * Error log page support
      * Support for separate read/write/poll queues
      * Much improved polling
      * discard OOM fallback
      * Tracepoint improvements

   - lightnvm (Hans, Hua, Igor, Matias, Javier)
      * Igor added packed metadata to pblk. Now drives without metadata
        per LBA can be used as well.
      * Fix from Geert on uninitialized value on chunk metadata reads.
      * Fixes from Hans and Javier to pblk recovery and write path.
      * Fix from Hua Su to fix a race condition in the pblk recovery
        code.
      * Scan optimization added to pblk recovery from Zhoujie.
      * Small geometry cleanup from me.

   - Conversion of the last few drivers that used the legacy path to
     blk-mq (me)

   - Removal of legacy IO path in SCSI (me, Christoph)

   - Removal of legacy IO stack and schedulers (me)

   - Support for much better polling, now without interrupts at all.
     blk-mq adds support for multiple queue maps, which enables us to
     have a map per type. This in turn enables nvme to have separate
     completion queues for polling, which can then be interrupt-less.
     Also means we're ready for async polled IO, which is hopefully
     coming in the next release.

   - Killing of (now) unused block exports (Christoph)

   - Unification of the blk-rq-qos and blk-wbt wait handling (Josef)

   - Support for zoned testing with null_blk (Masato)

   - sx8 conversion to per-host tag sets (Christoph)

   - IO priority improvements (Damien)

   - mq-deadline zoned fix (Damien)

   - Ref count blkcg series (Dennis)

   - Lots of blk-mq improvements and speedups (me)

   - sbitmap scalability improvements (me)

   - Make core inflight IO accounting per-cpu (Mikulas)

   - Export timeout setting in sysfs (Weiping)

   - Cleanup the direct issue path (Jianchao)

   - Export blk-wbt internals in block debugfs for easier debugging
     (Ming)

   - Lots of other fixes and improvements"

2b08b1f12c ext4: fix a potential fiemap/page fault deadlock w/ inline_data
The ext4_inline_data_fiemap() function calls fiemap_fill_next_extent()
while still holding the xattr semaphore. This is not necessary and it
triggers a circular lockdep warning. This is because
fiemap_fill_next_extent() could trigger a page fault when it writes
into page which triggers a page fault. If that page is mmaped from
the inline file in question, this could very well result in a
deadlock.

This problem can be reproduced using generic/519 with a file system
configuration which has the inline_data feature enabled.

ext4_write_inode() needs to bail out early.

Also use jbd2_complete_transaction() instead of ext4_force_commit() so
we only force a commit if it is needed.

fde872682e ext4: force inode writes when nfsd calls commit_metadata()
Some time back, nfsd switched from calling vfs_fsync() to using a new
commit_metadata() hook in export_operations(). If the file system did
not provide a commit_metadata() hook, it fell back to using
sync_inode_metadata(). Unfortunately doesn't work on all file
systems. In particular, it doesn't work on ext4 due to how the inode
gets journalled --- the VFS writeback code will not always call
ext4_write_inode().

So we need to provide our own ext4_nfs_commit_metdata() method which
calls ext4_write_inode() directly.

8a363970d1 ext4: avoid declaring fs inconsistent due to invalid file handles
If we receive a file handle, either from NFS or open_by_handle_at(2),
and it points at an inode which has not been initialized, and the file
system has metadata checksums enabled, we shouldn't try to get the
inode, discover the checksum is invalid, and then declare the file
system as being inconsistent.

This can be reproduced by creating a test file system via "mke2fs -t
ext4 -O metadata_csum /tmp/foo.img 8M", mounting it, cd'ing into that
directory, and then running the following program.

#define _GNU_SOURCE
#include <fcntl.h>

struct handle {
	struct file_handle fh;
	unsigned char fid[MAX_HANDLE_SZ];
};

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
	struct handle h = {{8, 1 }, { 12, }};

	open_by_handle_at(AT_FDCWD, &h.fh, O_RDONLY);
	return 0;
}

a805622a75 ext4: include terminating u32 in size of xattr entries when expanding inodes
In ext4_expand_extra_isize_ea(), we calculate the total size of the
xattr header, plus the xattr entries so we know how much of the
beginning part of the xattrs to move when expanding the inode extra
size. We need to include the terminating u32 at the end of the xattr
entries, or else if there is uninitialized, non-zero bytes after the
xattr entries and before the xattr values, the list of xattr entries
won't be properly terminated.

e647e29196 ext4: fix EXT4_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctl
Commit e2b911c535 ("ext4: clean up feature test macros with
predicate functions") broke the EXT4_IOC_GROUP_ADD ioctl. This was
not noticed since only very old versions of resize2fs (before
e2fsprogs 1.42) use this ioctl. However, using a new kernel with an
enterprise Linux userspace will cause attempts to use online resize to
fail with "No reserved GDT blocks".

fb265c9cb4 ext4: add ext4_sb_bread() to disambiguate ENOMEM cases
Today, when sb_bread() returns NULL, this can either be because of an
I/O error or because the system failed to allocate the buffer. Since
it's an old interface, changing would require changing many call
sites.

So instead we create our own ext4_sb_bread(), which also allows us to
set the REQ_META flag.

Also fixed a problem in the xattr code where a NULL return in a
function could also mean that the xattr was not found, which could
lead to the wrong error getting returned to userspace.

eb6984fa4c ext4: missing !bh check in ext4_xattr_inode_write()
According to Ted Ts'o ext4_getblk() called in ext4_xattr_inode_write()
should not return bh = NULL

The only time that bh could be NULL, then, would be in the case of
something really going wrong; a programming error elsewhere (perhaps a
wild pointer dereference) or I/O error causing on-disk file system
corruption (although that would be highly unlikely given that we had
*just* allocated the blocks and so the metadata blocks in question
probably would still be in the cache).

e468f5c06b The Compiler Attributes series
This is an effort to disentangle the include/linux/compiler*.h headers
 and bring them up to date.

 The main idea behind the series is to use feature checking macros
 (i.e. __has_attribute) instead of compiler version checks (e.g. GCC_VERSION),
 which are compiler-agnostic (so they can be shared, reducing the size
 of compiler-specific headers) and version-agnostic.

 Other related improvements have been performed in the headers as well,
 which on top of the use of __has_attribute it has amounted to a significant
 simplification of these headers (e.g. GCC_VERSION is now only guarding
 a few non-attribute macros).

 This series should also help the efforts to support compiling the kernel
 with clang and icc. A fair amount of documentation and comments have also
 been added, clarified or removed; and the headers are now more readable,
 which should help kernel developers in general.

 The series was triggered due to the move to gcc >= 4.6. In turn, this series
 has also triggered Sparse to gain the ability to recognize __has_attribute
 on its own.

 Finally, the __nonstring variable attribute series has been also applied
 on top; plus two related patches from Nick Desaulniers for unreachable()
 that came a bit afterwards.

  This patch set

   1. Introduces the XArray implementation

   2. Converts the pagecache to use it

   3. Converts memremap to use it

  The page cache is the most complex and important user of the radix

  us to remove the radix tree code that supported it.

  I have 40+ followup patches to convert many other users of the radix

dc7ac6c4ca ext4: fix setattr project check in fssetxattr ioctl
Currently, project quota could be changed by fssetxattr
ioctl, and existed permission check inode_owner_or_capable()

This patch try to follow same regular of xfs project

"Project Quota ID state is only allowed to change from

if we are trying to change the quota ID state.
Everything else is allowed in user namespaces."

Besides that, check and set project id'state should

9fe671496b ext4: adjust reserved cluster count when removing extents
Modify ext4_ext_remove_space() and the code it calls to correct the
reserved cluster count for pending reservations (delayed allocated
clusters shared with allocated blocks) when a block range is removed
from the extent tree. Pending reservations may be found for the clusters
at the ends of written or unwritten extents when a block range is removed.
If a physical cluster at the end of an extent is freed, it's necessary
to increment the reserved cluster count to maintain correct accounting
if the corresponding logical cluster is shared with at least one
delayed and unwritten extent as found in the extents status tree.

Add a new function, ext4_rereserve_cluster(), to reapply a reservation
on a delayed allocated cluster sharing blocks with a freed allocated
cluster. To avoid ENOSPC on reservation, a flag is applied to
ext4_free_blocks() to briefly defer updating the freeclusters counter
when an allocated cluster is freed. This prevents another thread
from allocating the freed block before the reservation can be reapplied.

Redefine the partial cluster object as a struct to carry more state
information and to clarify the code using it.

Adjust the conditional code structure in ext4_ext_remove_space to
reduce the indentation level in the main body of the code to improve
readability.

b6bf9171ef ext4: reduce reserved cluster count by number of allocated clusters
Ext4 does not always reduce the reserved cluster count by the number
of clusters allocated when mapping a delayed extent. It sometimes
adds back one or more clusters after allocation if delalloc blocks
adjacent to the range allocated by ext4_ext_map_blocks() share the
clusters newly allocated for that range. However, this overcounts
the number of clusters needed to satisfy future mapping requests
(holding one or more reservations for clusters that have already been
allocated) and premature ENOSPC and quota failures, etc., result.

Ext4 also does not reduce the reserved cluster count when allocating
clusters for non-delayed allocated writes that have previously been
reserved for delayed writes. This also results in overcounts.

To make it possible to handle reserved cluster accounting for
fallocated regions in the same manner as used for other non-delayed
writes, do the reserved cluster accounting for them at the time of
allocation. In the current code, this is only done later when a
delayed extent sharing the fallocated region is finally mapped.

generalize the existing code to search for caller-specified extents

cce6c9f7e6 ext4, dax: set ext4_dax_aops for dax files
Sync syscall to DAX file needs to flush processor cache, but it
currently does not flush to existing DAX files. This is because
'ext4_da_aops' is set to address_space_operations of existing DAX
files, instead of 'ext4_dax_aops', since S_DAX flag is set after
ext4_set_aops() in the open path.

94dbb63117 ext4, dax: add ext4_bmap to ext4_dax_aops
Ext4 mount path calls .bmap to the journal inode. This currently
works for the DAX mount case because ext4_iget() always set
'ext4_da_aops' to any regular files.

In preparation to fix ext4_iget() to set 'ext4_dax_aops' for ext4
DAX files, add ext4_bmap() to 'ext4_dax_aops', since bmap works for
DAX inodes.

fe18d64989 ext4: don't mark mmp buffer head dirty
Marking mmp bh dirty before writing it will make writeback
pick up mmp block later and submit a write, we don't want the
duplicate write as kmmpd thread should have full control of
reading and writing the mmp block.
Another reason is we will also have random I/O error on
the writeback request when blk integrity is enabled, because
kmmpd could modify the content of the mmp block(e.g. setting

b1f382178d ext4: close race between direct IO and ext4_break_layouts()
If the refcount of a page is lowered between the time that it is returned
by dax_busy_page() and when the refcount is again checked in
ext4_break_layouts() => ___wait_var_event(), the waiting function
ext4_wait_dax_page() will never be called. This means that
ext4_break_layouts() will still have 'retry' set to false, so we'll stop
looping and never check the refcount of other pages in this inode.

Instead, always continue looping as long as dax_layout_busy_page() gives us
a page which it found with an elevated refcount.

4274f516d4 ext4: recalucate superblock checksum after updating free blocks/inodes
When mounting the superblock, ext4_fill_super() calculates the free
blocks and free inodes and stores them in the superblock. It's not
strictly necessary, since we don't use them any more, but it's nice to
keep them roughly aligned to reality.

Since it's not critical for file system correctness, the code doesn't
call ext4_commit_super(). The problem is that it's in
ext4_commit_super() that we recalculate the superblock checksum. So
if we're not going to call ext4_commit_super(), we need to call
ext4_superblock_csum_set() to make sure the superblock checksum is
consistent.

Most of the time, this doesn't matter, since we end up calling
ext4_commit_super() very soon thereafter, and definitely by the time
the file system is unmounted. However, it doesn't work in this
sequence:

mke2fs -Fq -t ext4 /dev/vdc 128M
mount /dev/vdc /vdc
cp xfstests/git-versions /vdc
godown /vdc
umount /vdc
mount /dev/vdc
tune2fs -l /dev/vdc

With this commit, the "tune2fs -l" no longer fails.

4d982e25d0 ext4: avoid divide by zero fault when deleting corrupted inline directories
A specially crafted file system can trick empty_inline_dir() into
reading past the last valid entry in a inline directory, and then run
into the end of xattr marker. This will trigger a divide by zero
fault. Fix this by using the size of the inline directory instead of
dir->i_size.

Also clean up error reporting in __ext4_check_dir_entry so that the
message is clearer and more understandable --- and avoids the division
by zero trap if the size passed in is zero. (I'm not sure why we
coded it that way in the first place; printing offset % size is
actually more confusing and less useful.)

e1fb4a0864 dax: remove VM_MIXEDMAP for fsdax and device dax
This patch is reworked from an earlier patch that Dan has posted:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10131727/

VM_MIXEDMAP is used by dax to direct mm paths like vm_normal_page() that
the memory page it is dealing with is not typical memory from the linear
map. The get_user_pages_fast() path, since it does not resolve the vma,
is already using {pte,pmd}_devmap() as a stand-in for VM_MIXEDMAP, so we
use that as a VM_MIXEDMAP replacement in some locations. In the cases
where there is no pte to consult we fallback to using vma_is_dax() to
detect the VM_MIXEDMAP special case.

Now that we have explicit driver pfn_t-flag opt-in/opt-out for
get_user_pages() support for DAX we can stop setting VM_MIXEDMAP. This
also means we no longer need to worry about safely manipulating vm_flags
in a future where we support dynamically changing the dax mode of a
file.

DAX should also now be supported with madvise_behavior(), vma_merge(),
and copy_page_range().

This patch has been tested against ndctl unit test. It has also been
tested against xfstests commit: 625515d using fake pmem created by
memmap and no additional issues have been observed.

for now is to simply validate that the extended attributes are sane.

6a0678a79b ext4: super: extend timestamps to 40 bits
The inode timestamps use 34 bits in ext4, but the various timestamps in
the superblock are limited to 32 bits. If every user accesses these as
'unsigned', then this is good until year 2106, but it seems better to
extend this a bit further in the process of removing the deprecated
get_seconds() function.

This adds another byte for each timestamp in the superblock, making
them long enough to store timestamps beyond what is in the inodes,
which seems good enough here (in ocfs2, they are already 64-bit wide,
which is appropriate for a new layout).

I did not modify e2fsprogs, which obviously needs the same change to
actually interpret future timestamps correctly.

5012284700 ext4: fix check to prevent initializing reserved inodes
Commit 8844618d8a: "ext4: only look at the bg_flags field if it is
valid" will complain if block group zero does not have the
EXT4_BG_INODE_ZEROED flag set. Unfortunately, this is not correct,
since a freshly created file system has this flag cleared. It gets
almost immediately after the file system is mounted read-write --- but
the following somewhat unlikely sequence will end up triggering a
false positive report of a corrupted file system:

   mkfs.ext4 /dev/vdc
   mount -o ro /dev/vdc /vdc
   mount -o remount,rw /dev/vdc

Instead, when initializing the inode table for block group zero, test
to make sure that itable_unused count is not too large, since that is
the case that will result in some or all of the reserved inodes
getting cleared.

This fixes the failures reported by Eric Whiteney when running
generic/230 and generic/231 in the the nojournal test case.

8d5a803c6a ext4: check for allocation block validity with block group locked
With commit 044e6e3d74: "ext4: don't update checksum of new
initialized bitmaps" the buffer valid bit will get set without
actually setting up the checksum for the allocation bitmap, since the
checksum will get calculated once we actually allocate an inode or
block.

If we are doing this, then we need to (re-)check the verified bit
after we take the block group lock. Otherwise, we could race with
another process reading and verifying the bitmap, which would then
complain about the checksum being invalid.

Ext4_check_descriptors() was getting called before s_gdb_count was

For file systems with the meta_bg feature enabled, there was a

a17712c8e4 ext4: check superblock mapped prior to committing
This patch attempts to close a hole leading to a BUG seen with hot
removals during writes [1].

A block device (NVME namespace in this test case) is formatted to EXT4
without partitions. It's mounted and write I/O is run to a file, then
the device is hot removed from the slot. The superblock attempts to be
written to the drive which is no longer present.

The typical chain of events leading to the BUG:
ext4_commit_super()
  __sync_dirty_buffer()
    submit_bh()
      submit_bh_wbc()
        BUG_ON(!buffer_mapped(bh));

This fix checks for the superblock's buffer head being mapped prior to
syncing.

bfe0a5f47a ext4: add more mount time checks of the superblock
The kernel's ext4 mount-time checks were more permissive than
e2fsprogs's libext2fs checks when opening a file system. The

6e8ab72a81 ext4: clear i_data in ext4_inode_info when removing inline data
When converting from an inode from storing the data in-line to a data
block, ext4_destroy_inline_data_nolock() was only clearing the on-disk
copy of the i_blocks[] array. It was not clearing copy of the
i_blocks[] in ext4_inode_info, in i_data[], which is the copy actually
used by ext4_map_blocks().

This didn't matter much if we are using extents, since the extents
header would be invalid and thus the extents could would re-initialize
the extents tree. But if we are using indirect blocks, the previous
contents of the i_blocks array will be treated as block numbers, with
potentially catastrophic results to the file system integrity and/or
user data.

This gets worse if the file system is using a 1k block size and
s_first_data is zero, but even without this, the file system can get
quite badly corrupted.

7a932516f5 vfs/y2038: inode timestamps conversion to timespec64
This is a late set of changes from Deepa Dinamani doing an automated
 treewide conversion of the inode and iattr structures from 'timespec'
 to 'timespec64', to push the conversion from the VFS layer into the
 individual file systems.

 There were no conflicts between this and the contents of linux-next
 until just before the merge window, when we saw multiple problems:

 - A minor conflict with my own y2038 fixes, which I could address
   by adding another patch on top here.
 - One semantic conflict with late changes to the NFS tree. I addressed
   this by merging Deepa's original branch on top of the changes that
   now got merged into mainline and making sure the merge commit includes
   the necessary changes as produced by coccinelle.
 - A trivial conflict against the removal of staging/lustre.
 - Multiple conflicts against the VFS changes in the overlayfs tree.
   These are still part of linux-next, but apparently this is no longer
   intended for 4.18 [1], so I am ignoring that part.

 As Deepa writes:

   The series aims to switch vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64.
   Currently vfs uses struct timespec, which is not y2038 safe.

   The series involves the following:
   1. Add vfs helper functions for supporting struct timepec64 timestamps.
   2. Cast prints of vfs timestamps to avoid warnings after the switch.
   3. Simplify code using vfs timestamps so that the actual
      replacement becomes easy.
   4. Convert vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64 using a script.
      This is a flag day patch.

   Next steps:
   1. Convert APIs that can handle timespec64, instead of converting
      timestamps at the boundaries.
   2. Update internal data structures to avoid timestamp conversions.

 Thomas Gleixner adds:

   I think there is no point to drag that out for the next merge window.
   The whole thing needs to be done in one go for the core changes which
   means that you're going to play that catchup game forever. Let's get
   over with it towards the end of the merge window.

  We are targeting 4.18 for this.
  Let me know if you have other suggestions.

  I've tried to keep the conversions with the script simple, to
  aid in the reviews. I've kept all the internal filesystem data
  structures and function signatures the same.

  Next steps:
  1. Convert APIs that can handle timespec64, instead of converting
     timestamps at the boundaries.
  2. Update internal data structures to avoid timestamp conversions."

I've pulled it into a branch based on top of the NFS changes that
are now in mainline, so I could resolve the non-obvious conflict
between the two while merging.
