As the chip can't be queried for it's current state, the "keep" option
doesn't make sense. The only option in DT should be turn the LED on or

If userspace doesn't end the input with a newline (which can easily
happen if the write happens from a C program that does write(fd,
iface, strlen(iface))), we may end up including garbage from a
previous, longer value in the device_name. For example
# cat device_name
# printf 'eth12' > device_name
# cat device_name
eth12
# printf 'eth3' > device_name
# cat device_name
eth32
I highly doubt anybody is relying on this behaviour, so switch to
simply copying the bytes (we've already checked that size is <
IFNAMSIZ) and unconditionally zero-terminate it; of course, we also
still have to strip a trailing newline.
This is also preparation for future patches.

Renaming a netdev-trigger-tracked interface was resulting in an
unbalanced dev_hold().
Example:
> iw phy phy0 interface add foo type __ap
> echo netdev > trigger
> echo foo > device_name
> ip link set foo name bar
> iw dev bar del
[ 237.355366] unregister_netdevice: waiting for bar to become free. Usage count = 1
[ 247.435362] unregister_netdevice: waiting for bar to become free. Usage count = 1
[ 257.545366] unregister_netdevice: waiting for bar to become free. Usage count = 1
Above problem was caused by trigger checking a dev->name which obviously
changes after renaming an interface. It meant missing all further events
including the NETDEV_UNREGISTER which is required for calling dev_put().
This change fixes that by:
1) Comparing device struct *address* for notification-filtering purposes
2) Dropping unneeded NETDEV_CHANGENAME code (no behavior change)

Add support for capability register in order to distinct between the
systems with minor LED configuration differences. It reduces the amount
of code describing systems' LED configuration.
For example one system can be equipped with six LED, while the other
with only four. Reading this information from the capability registers
allows to use the same LED structure for such systems and set the
relevant configuration dynamically based on capability register
content.

When lp55xx_read() fails, "status" is an uninitialized variable and thus

Add the flag LED_INIT_DEFAULT_TRIGGER for indicating that trigger

thus it should be initialized with settings provided in the fwnode.
Set the flag in the led_trigger_set_default(). It is expected to be

This patch adds a new LED trigger for coupling the audio mixer change
with the LED on laptops or other devices. Currently there are two
trigger types, "audio-mute" and "audio-micmute".
The audio driver triggers the LED brightness change via
ledtrig_audio_set() call with the proper type (either mute or
mic-mute). OTOH, the consumers may call ledtrig_audio_get() for the
initial brightness value that may have been set by the audio driver
beforehand.
This new stuff will be used by HD-audio codec driver and some platform
drivers (thinkpad_acpi and dell-laptop, also upcoming huawei-wmi).

Documentation: ABI: led-trigger-pattern: Fix typos

Fix pattern handling optimalization
We will meet below issue due to mutex_lock() is called in interrupt context.
The mutex lock is used to protect the pattern trigger data, but before changing
new pattern trigger data (pattern values or repeat value) by users, we always
cancel the timer firstly to clear previous patterns' performance. That means
there is no race in pattern_trig_timer_function(), so we can drop the mutex
lock in pattern_trig_timer_function() to avoid this issue.
Moreover we can move the timer cancelling into mutex protection, since there
is no deadlock risk if we remove the mutex lock in pattern_trig_timer_function().

Commit 45d4c6de4e ("leds: gpio: Try to lookup gpiod from device")
removed the common code path that set the led_dat->gpiod pointer in
create_gpio_led(), but only added it back for the devices that have
a valid gpio_led_platform_data structure. Calling gpio_leds_create()
in gpio_led_probe() is not enough to get a valid gpiod pointer.
Fortunately enough, gpio_leds_create() already gets the needed pointer,
we just need to assign it to the relevant gpio_led_data structure.

This patch adds a new LED trigger that LED device can configure
to employ software or hardware pattern engine.
Consumers can write 'pattern' file to enable the software pattern
which alters the brightness for the specified duration with one
software timer.
Moreover consumers can write 'hw_pattern' file to enable the hardware
pattern for some LED controllers which can autonomously control
brightness over time, according to some preprogrammed hardware
patterns.

This augments the GPIO lookup code in the GPIO LEDs to
attempt to look up a GPIO descriptor from the device with
index.
This makes it possible to use GPIO machine look-up tables
and stop passing global GPIO numbers through platform data.
Using this we can stepwise convert existing board files
to use machine descriptor tables and then eventually drop
the legacy GPIO support and only include
<linux/gpio/consumer.h> and use descriptors exclusively.

and writes respectively, named "disk-read" and "disk-write".
The use case comes from working on the D-Link DNS-313 NAS

these two triggers I can couple the green LED to read
activity and the red LED to write activity, which gives
the appropriate user feedback about what is happening
on the disk. When tested it gave exactly the feedback
desired.

This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL*
variables as described by Al, done by this script:
for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do
L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'`
for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done
done
with de-mangling cleanups yet to come.
NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same
values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost".
For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't
actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al.
The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we
should be all done.

Pull poll annotations from Al Viro:
"This introduces a __bitwise type for POLL### bitmap, and propagates
the annotations through the tree. Most of that stuff is as simple as
'make ->poll() instances return __poll_t and do the same to local
variables used to hold the future return value'.
Some of the obvious brainos found in process are fixed (e.g. POLLIN
misspelled as POLL_IN). At that point the amount of sparse warnings is
low and most of them are for genuine bugs - e.g. ->poll() instance
deciding to return -EINVAL instead of a bitmap. I hadn't touched those
in this series - it's large enough as it is.
Another problem it has caught was eventpoll() ABI mess; select.c and
eventpoll.c assumed that corresponding POLL### and EPOLL### were
equal. That's true for some, but not all of them - EPOLL### are
arch-independent, but POLL### are not.
The last commit in this series separates userland POLL### values from
the (now arch-independent) kernel-side ones, converting between them
in the few places where they are copied to/from userland. AFAICS, this
is the least disruptive fix preserving poll(2) ABI and making epoll()
work on all architectures.
As it is, it's simply broken on sparc - try to give it EPOLLWRNORM and
it will trigger only on what would've triggered EPOLLWRBAND on other
architectures. EPOLLWRBAND and EPOLLRDHUP, OTOH, are never triggered
at all on sparc. With this patch they should work consistently on all
architectures"

Commit 2b83ff96f5 ("led: core: Fix brightness setting when setting delay_off=0")
replaced del_timer_sync(&led_cdev->blink_timer) with led_stop_software_blink()
in led_blink_set(), which additionally clears LED_BLINK_SW flag as well as
zeroes blink_delay_on and blink_delay_off properties of the struct led_classdev.
Cleansing of the latter ones wasn't required to fix the original issue but
wasn't considered harmful. It nonetheless turned out to be so in case when
pointer to one or both props is passed to led_blink_set() like in the
ledtrig-timer.c. In such cases zeroes are passed later in delay_on and/or
delay_off arguments to led_blink_setup(), which results either in stopping
the software blinking or setting blinking frequency always to 1Hz.
Avoid using led_stop_software_blink() and add a single call required
to clear LED_BLINK_SW flag, which was the only needed modification to
fix the original issue.

With the current code, the following sequence won't work :
echo timer > trigger
echo 0 > delay_off
* at this point we call
** led_delay_off_store
** led_blink_set
*** stop timer
** led_blink_setup
** led_set_software_blink
*** if !delay_on, led off
*** if !delay_off, set led_set_brightness_nosleep <--- LED_BLINK_SW is set but timer is stop
*** otherwise start timer/set LED_BLINK_SW flag
echo xxx > brightness
* led_set_brightness
** if LED_BLINK_SW
*** if brightness=0, led off
*** else apply brightness if next timer <--- timer is stop, and will never apply new setting
** otherwise set led_set_brightness_nosleep
To fix that, when we delete the timer, we should clear LED_BLINK_SW.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

The PCA9552 lines can be used either for driving LEDs or as GPIOs. The
manual states that for LEDs, the operation is open-drain:
The LSn LED select registers determine the source of the LED data.
00 = output is set LOW (LED on)
01 = output is set high-impedance (LED off; default)
10 = output blinks at PWM0 rate
11 = output blinks at PWM1 rate
For GPIOs it suggests a pull-up so that the open-case drives the line
high:
For use as output, connect external pull-up resistor to the pin
and size it according to the DC recommended operating
characteristics. LED output pin is HIGH when the output is
programmed as high-impedance, and LOW when the output is
programmed LOW through the ‘LED selector’ register. The output
can be pulse-width controlled when PWM0 or PWM1 are used.
Now, I have a hardware design that uses the LED controller to control
LEDs. However, for $reasons, we're using the leds-gpio driver to drive
the them. The reasons are here are a tangent but lead to the discovery
of the inversion, which manifested as the LEDs being set to full
brightness at boot when we expected them to be off.
As we're driving the LEDs through leds-gpio, this means wending our way
through the gpiochip abstractions. So with that in mind we need to
describe an active-low GPIO configuration to drive the LEDs as though
they were GPIOs.
The set() gpiochip callback in leds-pca955x does the following:
...
if (val)
pca955x_led_set(&led->led_cdev, LED_FULL);
else
pca955x_led_set(&led->led_cdev, LED_OFF);
...
Where LED_FULL = 255. pca955x_led_set() in turn does:
...
switch (value) {
case LED_FULL:
ls = pca955x_ledsel(ls, ls_led, PCA955X_LS_LED_ON);
break;
...
Where PCA955X_LS_LED_ON is defined as:
#define PCA955X_LS_LED_ON 0x0 /* Output LOW */
So here we have some type confusion: We've crossed domains from GPIO
behaviour to LED behaviour without accounting for possible inversions
in the process.
Stepping back to leds-gpio for a moment, during probe() we call
create_gpio_led(), which eventually executes:
if (template->default_state == LEDS_GPIO_DEFSTATE_KEEP) {
state = gpiod_get_value_cansleep(led_dat->gpiod);
if (state < 0)
return state;
} else {
state = (template->default_state == LEDS_GPIO_DEFSTATE_ON);
}
...
ret = gpiod_direction_output(led_dat->gpiod, state);
In the devicetree the GPIO is annotated as active-low, and
gpiod_get_value_cansleep() handles this for us:
int gpiod_get_value_cansleep(const struct gpio_desc *desc)
{
int value;
might_sleep_if(extra_checks);
VALIDATE_DESC(desc);
value = _gpiod_get_raw_value(desc);
if (value < 0)
return value;
if (test_bit(FLAG_ACTIVE_LOW, &desc->flags))
value = !value;
return value;
}
_gpiod_get_raw_value() in turn calls through the get() callback for the
gpiochip implementation, so returning to our get() implementation in
leds-pca955x we find we extract the raw value from hardware:
static int pca955x_gpio_get_value(struct gpio_chip *gc, unsigned int offset)
{
struct pca955x *pca955x = gpiochip_get_data(gc);
struct pca955x_led *led = &pca955x->leds[offset];
u8 reg = pca955x_read_input(pca955x->client, led->led_num / 8);
return !!(reg & (1 << (led->led_num % 8)));
}
This behaviour is not symmetric with that of set(), where the val is
inverted by the driver.
Closing the loop on the GPIO_ACTIVE_LOW inversions,
gpiod_direction_output(), like gpiod_get_value_cansleep(), handles it
for us:
int gpiod_direction_output(struct gpio_desc *desc, int value)
{
VALIDATE_DESC(desc);
if (test_bit(FLAG_ACTIVE_LOW, &desc->flags))
value = !value;
else
value = !!value;
return _gpiod_direction_output_raw(desc, value);
}
All-in-all, with a value of 'keep' for default-state property in a
leds-gpio child node, the current state of the hardware will in-fact be
inverted; precisely the opposite of what was intended.
Rework leds-pca955x so that we avoid the incorrect inversion and clarify
the semantics with respect to GPIO.

The "activity" trigger was inspired by the heartbeat one, but aims at
providing instant indication of the immediate CPU usage. Under idle
condition, it flashes 10ms every second. At 100% usage, it flashes
90ms every 100ms. The blinking frequency increases from 1 to 10 Hz
until either the load is high enough to saturate one CPU core or 50%
load is reached on a single-core system. Then past this point only the
duty cycle increases from 10 to 90%.
This results in a very visible activity reporting allowing one to
immediately tell whether a machine is under load or not, making it
quite suitable to be used in clusters.

The V4L2 flash interface allows controlling multiple LEDs through a single
sub-devices if, and only if, these LEDs are of different types. This
approach scales badly for flash controllers that drive multiple flash LEDs
or for LED specific associations. Essentially, the original assumption of a
LED driver chip that drives a single flash LED and an indicator LED is no
longer valid.
Address the matter by registering one sub-device per LED.

The PCA955x family of chips are I2C LED blinkers whose pins not used
to control LEDs can be used as general purpose I/Os (GPIOs).
The following adds such a support by defining different operation
modes for the pins (See bindings documentation for more details). The
pca955x driver is then extended with a gpio_chip when some of pins are
operating as GPIOs. The default operating mode is to behave as a LED.
The GPIO support is conditioned by CONFIG_LEDS_PCA955X_GPIO.

This reverts commit 5ab92a7cb8.
System cannot enter suspend mode because of heartbeat led trigger.
In autosleep_wq, try_to_suspend function will try to enter suspend
mode in specific period. it will get wakeup_count then call pm_notifier
chain callback function and freeze processes.
Heartbeat_pm_notifier is called and it call led_trigger_unregister to
change the trigger of led device to none. It will send uevent message
and the wakeup source count changed. As wakeup_count changed, suspend

Rafael already told [2] how this device would be enumerated using
compatible string. To be more precise look at the possible DSDT excerpt
below:
Device (LDX0) {
Name (_HID, "PRP0001")
Name (_DDN, "TI LP3952 compatible led driver")
...
})
Name (_DSD, Package () {
ToUUID("daffd814-6eba-4d8c-8a91-bc9bbf4aa301"),
Package () {
Package () {"compatible", "ti,lp3952"},
...
}
})
Based on above, remove non-official ACPI IDs and enumeration from the
driver.
Note: currently driver has no compatible strings at all, to make above
working one should add at least one.

These new functions allow passing an additional device_node argument
that will be internally set for created LED device. Thanks to this LED
core code and triggers will be able to access DT node for reading extra
info.
The easiest solution for achieving this was reworking old functions to
more generic ones & adding simple defines for API compatibility.

The dell-led driver handles a specific WMI GUID present on some Dell
laptops and as such it belongs in the x86 platform driver subsystem.
Source code is moved along with the relevant Kconfig and Makefile
entries, with some minor modifications:
- Kconfig option is renamed from CONFIG_LEDS_DELL_NETBOOKS to
CONFIG_DELL_WMI_LED,
- the X86 Kconfig dependency is removed as the whole
drivers/platform/x86 menu depends on it, so there is no need to
duplicate it,
- the name of the module's source file is removed from the header
comment to avoid the need to update it in the future.

This patch adds a new trigger, 'cpu', with brightness proportional to
the number of active CPUs.
If multiple brightness levels aren't supported on the LED,
it effectively indicates if there is any CPU active.

Some LEDs may have their brightness level changed autonomously
(outside of kernel control) by hardware / firmware. This commit
adds support for an optional brightness_hw_changed attribute to
signal such changes to userspace (if a driver can detect them):
What: /sys/class/leds/<led>/brightness_hw_changed
Date: January 2017
KernelVersion: 4.11
Description:
Last hardware set brightness level for this LED. Some LEDs
may be changed autonomously by hardware/firmware. Only LEDs
where this happens and the driver can detect this, will
have this file.
This file supports poll() to detect when the hardware
changes the brightness.
Reading this file will return the last brightness level set
by the hardware, this may be different from the current
brightness.
Drivers which want to support this, simply add LED_BRIGHT_HW_CHANGED to
their flags field and call led_classdev_notify_brightness_hw_changed()
with the hardware set brightness when they detect a hardware / firmware
triggered brightness change.

All 3 of led_timer_func, led_set_brightness and led_set_software_blink
set blink_brightness. If led_timer_func or led_set_software_blink race
with led_set_brightness they may end up overwriting the new
blink_brightness. The new atomic work_flags does not protect against
this as it just protects the flags and not blink_brightness.
This commit introduces a new new_blink_brightness value which gets
set by led_set_brightness and read by led_timer_func on LED on, fixing
this.
Dealing with the new brightness at LED on time, makes the new
brightness apply sooner, which also fixes a led_set_brightness which
happens while a oneshot blink which ends in LED on is running not
getting applied.

This driver creates a userspace leds driver similar to uinput.
New LEDs are created by opening /dev/uleds and writing a uleds_user_dev
struct. A new LED class device is registered with the name given in the
struct. Reading will return a single byte that is the current brightness.
The poll() syscall is also supported. It will be triggered whenever the
brightness changes. Closing the file handle to /dev/uleds will remove
the leds class device.

The Kconfig and file naming for the PM8xxx driver is totally
confusing:
- Kconfig options MFD_PM8XXX and MFD_PM8921_CORE, some in-kernel
users depending on or selecting either at random.
- A driver file named pm8921-core.c even if it is indeed
used by the whole PM8xxx family of chips.
- An irqchip named pm8xxx since it was (I guess) realized that
the driver was generic for all pm8xxx PMICs.
As I may want to add support for PM8901 this is starting to get
really messy. Fix this situation by:
- Remove the MFD_PM8921_CORE symbol and rely solely on MFD_PM8XXX
and convert all users, including LEDs Kconfig and ARM defconfigs
for qcom and multi_v7 to use that single symbol.
- Renaming the driver to qcom-pm8xxx.c to fit along the two
other qcom* prefixed drivers.
- Rename functions withing the driver from 8921 to 8xxx to
indicate it is generic.
- Just drop the =m config from the pxa_defconfig, I have no clue
why it is even there, it is not a Qualcomm platform. (Possibly
older Kconfig noise from saveconfig.)

Checking for the presence of the property first isn't strictly needed
as we can react on the return code of fwnode_property_read_string.
Also, even if the presence of a property "label" was checked,
reading a string value for it theoretically still can fail and
this case isn't handled.

This makes it possible to create a set of LEDs for Mellanox systems:
"msx6710", "msx6720", "msb7700", "msn2700", "msx1410", "msn2410",
"msb7800", "msn2740", "msn2100".
Driver obtains LED devices according to system configuration, provided
through system DMI data, like mlxcpld:fan1:green, mlxcpld:fan1:red and
creates devices in form: "devicename:colour:function".
LED setting is controlled through on board CPLD Lattice device.
For setting particular LED off, solid, blink:
echo 0 > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:status\:green/brightness
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:status\:green/brightness
echo timer > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:status\:green/trigger
On module probing all LEDs are set green, on removing - off.
Last setting overwrites previous, f.e. sequence for
changing LED from green - red - green:
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:psu\:green/brightness
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:psu\:red/brightness
echo 1 > /sys/class/leds/mlxcpld\:psu\:green/brightness
Note: LEDs cannot be turned on/off simultaneously.

This adds a driver for the six PM8058 LEDs, three ordinary LEDs,
two "flash" LEDs and one "keypad" LED.
The "keypad" and "flash" LEDs are not really hard-wired to these
usecases: for example on the APQ8060 Dragonboard, the "keypad"
LED is instead used to drive an IR LED used for the proximity
sensor. The "flash" LEDs are just ordinary high-current LED
drivers.

drivers/leds/trigger/Kconfig: bool "LED Trigger support"
...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone.
Lets remove the couple traces of modular infrastructure use, so that
when reading the driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only.
We also delete the MODULE_LICENSE tag etc. since all that information
is already contained at the top of the file in the comments.
We don't replace module.h with init.h since the file doesn't need that.
However it does use EXPORT_SYMBOL, so we add the export.h header.

This is a driver for the Integrated Silicon Solution Inc. LED driver
chips series IS31FL319x. They can drive 1, 3, 6 or up to 9
LEDs.
Each LED is individually controllable in brightness (through pwm)
in 256 steps so that RGB LEDs can show any of ca. 16 Mio colors.
The maximum current of the LEDs can be programmed and limited to
5 .. 40mA through a device tree property.
The chip is connected through I2C and can have one of 4 addresses
in the range 0x64 .. 0x67 depending on how the AD pin is connected. The
address is defined by the reg property as usual.
The chip also has a shutdown input which could be connected to a GPIO,
but this driver uses software shutdown if all LEDs are inactivated.
The chip also has breathing and audio features which are not fully
supported by this driver.

When working with Device Tree we iterate over children of "gpio-leds"
compatible node and create LED device for each of them. We take care of
all common DT properties (label, default trigger, state, etc.), however
some triggers may want to support more of them.
It could be useful for timer trigger to support setting delay on/off
values with Device Tree property. Or for transient trigger to support
e.g. duration property.
We obviously should handle such properties in triggers, not in generic
code. To let trigger drivers read properties from DT node we need to set
of_node to point the relevant node. This change allows using all kind of
of helpers in e.g. "activate" callbacks.

This patch converts the IDE specific LED trigger to a generic disk
activity LED trigger. The libata core is now a trigger source just
like before the IDE disk driver. It's merely a replacement of the
string ide by disk.
The patch is taken from http://dev.gentoo.org/~josejx/ata.patch and is
widely used by any ibook/powerbook owners with great satisfaction.
Likewise, it is very often used successfully on different ARM platforms.
Unlike the original patch, the existing 'ide-disk' trigger is still
available for backward compatibility. That reduce the amount of patches
in affected device trees out of the mainline kernel. For further
development, the new name 'disk-activity' should be used.

The following phenomena was observed: when suspending the
system, sometimes the heartbeat LED was left on, glowing and
wasting power while the rest of the system is asleep, also
disturbing power dissapation measures on the odd suspend
cycle when it's left on.
Clearly this is not how we want the heartbeat trigger to
work: it should turn off and leave the LED off during
system suspend.
This removes the heartbeat trigger when preparing suspend and
restores it during resume. The trigger code will make sure all
LEDs are left in OFF state after removing the trigger, and
will re-enable the trigger on all LEDs after resuming.

Commit 76931edd54 ("leds: fix brightness changing when software blinking
is active") changed the semantics of led_set_brightness() which according
to the documentation should disable blinking upon any brightness setting.
Moreover it made it different for soft blink case, where it was possible
to change blink brightness, and for hardware blink case, where setting
any brightness greater than 0 was ignored.
While the change itself is against the documentation claims, it was driven
also by the fact that timer trigger remained active after turning blinking
off. Fixing that would have required major refactoring in the led-core,
led-class, and led-triggers because of cyclic dependencies.
Finally, it has been decided that allowing for brightness change during
blinking is beneficial as it can be accomplished without disturbing
blink rhythm.
The change in brightness setting semantics will not affect existing
LED class drivers that implement blink_set op thanks to the LED_BLINK_SW
flag introduced by this patch. The flag state will be from now on checked
in led_set_brightness() which will allow to distinguish between software
and hardware blink mode. In the latter case the control will be passed
directly to the drivers which apply their semantics on brightness set,
which is disable the blinking in case of most such drivers. New drivers
will apply new semantics and just change the brightness while hardware
blinking is on, if possible.
The issue was smuggled by subsequent LED core improvements, which modified
the code that originally introduced the problem.

This set of changes introduces an atomic API to the PWM subsystem. This
is influenced by the DRM atomic API that was introduced a while back,
though it is obviously a lot simpler. The fundamental idea remains the
same, though: drivers provide a single callback to implement the atomic
configuration of a PWM channel.
As a side-effect the PWM subsystem gains the ability for initial state
retrieval, so that the logical state mirrors that of the hardware. Many
use-cases don't care about this, but for others it is essential.
These new features require changes in all users, which these patches
take care of. The core is transitioned to use the atomic callback if
available and provides a fallback mechanism for other drivers.
Changes to transition users and drivers to the atomic API are postponed
to v4.8.

The PWM framework has clarified the concept of reference PWM config (the
platform dependent config retrieved from the DT or the PWM lookup table)
and real PWM state.
Use pwm_get_args() when the PWM user wants to retrieve this reference
config and not the current state.
This is part of the rework allowing the PWM framework to support
hardware readout and expose real PWM state even when the PWM has just
been requested (before the user calls pwm_config/enable/disable()).

Si-En Technology was acquired by ISSI in 2011, and it appears that
the IS31FL3218/IS31FL3216 are just rebranded SN3218/SN3216 devices.

The IS31FL32xx family of LED controllers are I2C devices with multiple
constant-current channels, each with independent 256-level PWM control.
Datasheets: http://www.issi.com/US/product-analog-fxled-driver.shtml
This has been tested on the IS31FL3236 and IS31FL3216, on an ARM
(TI am335x) platform.
The programming paradigm of these devices is similar in the following
ways:
- All registers are 8 bit
- All LED control registers are write-only
- Each LED channel has a PWM register (0-255)
- PWM register writes are shadowed until an Update register is poked
- All have a concept of Software Shutdown, which disables output
However, there are some differences in devices:
- 3236/3235 have a separate Control register for each LED,
(3218/3216 pack the enable bits into fewer registers)
- 3236/3235 have a per-channel current divisor setting
- 3236/3235 have a Global Control register that can turn off all LEDs
- 3216 is unique in a number of ways
- OUT9-OUT16 can be configured as GPIOs instead of LED controls
- LEDs can be programmed with an 8-frame animation, with
programmable delay between frames
- LEDs can be modulated by an input audio signal
- Max output current can be adjusted from 1/4 to 2x globally
- Has a Configuration register instead of a Shutdown register
This driver currently only supports the base PWM control function
of these devices. The following features of these devices are not
implemented, although it should be possible to add them in the future:
- All devices are capable of going into a lower-power "software
shutdown" mode.
- The is31fl3236 and is31fl3235 can reduce the max output current
per-channel with a divisor of 1, 2, 3, or 4.
- The is31fl3216 can use some LED channels as GPIOs instead.
- The is31fl3216 can animate LEDs in hardware.
- The is31fl3216 can modulate LEDs according to an audio input.
- The is31fl3216 can reduce/increase max output current globally.

When a USB LED device is unplugged the remove call chain calls
led_classdev_unregister which tries to switch the LED off.
As the device has been removed already this results in a ENODEV
error message in dmesg.
Avoid this error message by ignoring ENODEV in calls from
led_classdev_unregister if the LED device is flagged as pluggable.
Therefore a new flag LED_HW_PLUGGABLE was introduced which should be set by
all LED drivers handling pluggable LED devices (mainly USB LED devices).

Infrastructural changes:
- In struct gpio_chip, rename the .dev node to .parent to better reflect
the fact that this is not the GPIO struct device abstraction. We will
add that soon so this would be totallt confusing.
- It was noted that the driver .get_value() callbacks was
sometimes reporting negative -ERR values to the gpiolib core, expecting
them to be propagated to consumer gpiod_get_value() and gpio_get_value()
calls. This was not happening, so as there was a mess of drivers
returning negative errors and some returning "anything else than zero"
to indicate that a line was active. As some would have bit 31 set to
indicate "line active" it clashed with negative error codes. This is
fixed by the largeish series clamping values in all drivers with
!!value to [0,1] and then augmenting the code to propagate error codes
to consumers. (Includes some ACKed patches in other subsystems.)
- Add a void *data pointer to struct gpio_chip. The container_of() design
pattern is indeed very nice, but we want to reform the struct gpio_chip
to be a non-volative, stateless business, and keep states internal to
the gpiolib to be able to hold on to the state when adding a proper
userspace ABI (character device) further down the road. To achieve this,
drivers need a handle at the internal state that is not dependent on
their struct gpio_chip() so we add gpiochip_add_data() and
gpiochip_get_data() following the pattern of many other subsystems.
All the "use gpiochip data pointer" patches transforms drivers to this
scheme.
- The Generic GPIO chip header has been merged into the general
<linux/gpio/driver.h> header, and the custom header for that removed.
Instead of having a separate mm_gpio_chip struct for these generic
drivers, merge that into struct gpio_chip, simplifying the code and
removing the need for separate and confusing includes.
Misc improvements:
- Stabilize the way GPIOs are looked up from the ACPI legacy
specification.
- Incremental driver features for PXA, PCA953X, Lantiq (patches from the
OpenWRT community), RCAR, Zynq, PL061, 104-idi-48
New drivers:
- Add a GPIO chip to the ALSA SoC AC97 driver.
- Add a new Broadcom NSP SoC driver (this lands in the pinctrl dir, but
the branch is merged here too to account for infrastructural changes).
- The sx150x driver now supports the sx1502.

"Here is the bulk of GPIO changes for v4.5.
Notably there are big refactorings mostly by myself, aimed at getting
the gpio_chip into a shape that makes me believe I can proceed to
preserve state for a proper userspace ABI (character device) that has
already been proposed once, but resulted in the feedback that I need
to go back and restructure stuff. So I've been restructuring stuff.
On the way I ran into brokenness (return code from the get_value()
callback) and had to fix it. Also, refactored generic GPIO to be
simpler.
Some of that is still waiting to trickle down from the subsystems all
over the kernel that provide random gpio_chips, I've touched every
single GPIO driver in the kernel now, oh man I didn't know I was
responsible for so much...
Apart from that we're churning along as usual.
I took some effort to test and retest so it should merge nicely and we
shook out a couple of bugs in -next.

zero" to indicate that a line was active. As some would have bit
31 set to indicate "line active" it clashed with negative error
codes. This is fixed by the largeish series clamping values in all
drivers with !!value to [0,1] and then augmenting the code to
propagate error codes to consumers. (Includes some ACKed patches
in other subsystems.)
- Add a void *data pointer to struct gpio_chip. The container_of()
design pattern is indeed very nice, but we want to reform the
struct gpio_chip to be a non-volative, stateless business, and keep
states internal to the gpiolib to be able to hold on to the state
when adding a proper userspace ABI (character device) further down
the road. To achieve this, drivers need a handle at the internal
state that is not dependent on their struct gpio_chip() so we add
gpiochip_add_data() and gpiochip_get_data() following the pattern
of many other subsystems. All the "use gpiochip data pointer"
patches transforms drivers to this scheme.
- The Generic GPIO chip header has been merged into the general
<linux/gpio/driver.h> header, and the custom header for that
removed. Instead of having a separate mm_gpio_chip struct for
these generic drivers, merge that into struct gpio_chip,
simplifying the code and removing the need for separate and
confusing includes.
Misc improvements:
- Stabilize the way GPIOs are looked up from the ACPI legacy
specification.
- Incremental driver features for PXA, PCA953X, Lantiq (patches from
the OpenWRT community), RCAR, Zynq, PL061, 104-idi-48
New drivers:
- Add a GPIO chip to the ALSA SoC AC97 driver.
- Add a new Broadcom NSP SoC driver (this lands in the pinctrl dir,
but the branch is merged here too to account for infrastructural
changes).
- The sx150x driver now supports the sx1502"
