a) instead of storing the symlink body (via nd_set_link()) and returning
an opaque pointer later passed to ->put_link(), ->follow_link() _stores_
that opaque pointer (into void * passed by address by caller) and returns
the symlink body. Returning ERR_PTR() on error, NULL on jump (procfs magic
symlinks) and pointer to symlink body for normal symlinks. Stored pointer
is ignored in all cases except the last one.
Storing NULL for opaque pointer (or not storing it at all) means no call
of ->put_link().
b) the body used to be passed to ->put_link() implicitly (via nameidata).
Now only the opaque pointer is. In the cases when we used the symlink body
to free stuff, ->follow_link() now should store it as opaque pointer in addition
to returning it.

do_blockdev_direct_IO() increments and decrements the inode
->i_dio_count for each IO operation. It does this to protect against
truncate of a file. Block devices don't need this sort of protection.
For a capable multiqueue setup, this atomic int is the only shared
state between applications accessing the device for O_DIRECT, and it
presents a scaling wall for that. In my testing, as much as 30% of
system time is spent incrementing and decrementing this value. A mixed
read/write workload improved from ~2.5M IOPS to ~9.6M IOPS, with
better latencies too. Before:

This reverts commit 5a254d08b0.
Since commit 5a254d08b0 ("nfs: replace nfs_add_stats with
nfs_inc_stats when add one"), nfs_readpage and nfs_do_writepage use
nfs_inc_stats to increment NFSIOS_READPAGES and NFSIOS_WRITEPAGES
instead of nfs_add_stats.
However nfs_inc_stats does not do the same thing as nfs_add_stats with
value 1 because these functions work on distinct stats:
nfs_inc_stats increments stats from "enum nfs_stat_eventcounters" (in
server->io_stats->events) and nfs_add_stats those from "enum
nfs_stat_bytecounters" (in server->io_stats->bytes).

2ef47eb1 (NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()) was a good
start to fixing a circular directory structure warning for NFS v4
"junctioned" mountpoints. Unfortunately, further testing continued to
generate this error.
My server is configured like this:
anna@nfsd ~ % df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/vda1 9.1G 2.0G 6.5G 24% /
/dev/vdc1 1014M 33M 982M 4% /exports

/exports/vol1/ *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/exports/vol1/vol2 *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
I've been running chown across the entire mountpoint twice in a row to
hit this problem. The first run succeeds, but the second one fails with
the circular directory warning along with:
anna@client ~ % dmesg
[Apr 3 14:28] NFS: server 192.168.100.204 error: fileid changed
fsid 0:39: expected fileid 0x100080, got 0x80
WHere 0x80 is the mountpoint's fileid and 0x100080 is the mounted-on
fileid.
This patch fixes the issue by requesting an updated mounted-on fileid
from the server during nfs_update_inode(), and then checking that the
fileid stored in the nfs_inode matches either the fileid or mounted-on
fileid returned by the server.

Chuck pointed out a problem that crept in with commit 6ffa30d3f7 (nfs:
don't call blocking operations while !TASK_RUNNING). Linux counts tasks
in uninterruptible sleep against the load average, so this caused the
system's load average to be pinned at at least 1 when there was a
NFSv4.1+ mount active.
Not a huge problem, but it's probably worth fixing before we get too
many complaints about it. This patch converts the code back to use
TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE sleep, simply has it flush any signals on each loop
iteration. In practice no one should really be signalling this thread at
all, so I think this is reasonably safe.
With this change, there's also no need to game the hung task watchdog so
we can also convert the schedule_timeout call back to a normal schedule.

There are a lot of embedded systems that run most or all of their
functionality in init, running as root:root. For these systems,
supporting multiple users is not necessary.
This patch adds a new symbol, CONFIG_MULTIUSER, that makes support for
non-root users, non-root groups, and capabilities optional. It is enabled
under CONFIG_EXPERT menu.
When this symbol is not defined, UID and GID are zero in any possible case
and processes always have all capabilities.
The following syscalls are compiled out: setuid, setregid, setgid,
setreuid, setresuid, getresuid, setresgid, getresgid, setgroups,
getgroups, setfsuid, setfsgid, capget, capset.
Also, groups.c is compiled out completely.
In kernel/capability.c, capable function was moved in order to avoid
adding two ifdef blocks.
This change saves about 25 KB on a defconfig build. The most minimal
kernels have total text sizes in the high hundreds of kB rather than
low MB. (The 25k goes down a bit with allnoconfig, but not that much.
The kernel was booted in Qemu. All the common functionalities work.
Adding users/groups is not possible, failing with -ENOSYS.

This patch replaces cancel_dirty_page() with a helper function
account_page_cleaned() which only updates counters. It's called from
truncate_complete_page() and from try_to_free_buffers() (hack for ext3).
Page is locked in both cases, page-lock protects against concurrent
dirtiers: see commit 2d6d7f9828 ("mm: protect set_page_dirty() from
ongoing truncation").
Delete_from_page_cache() shouldn't be called for dirty pages, they must
be handled by caller (either written or truncated). This patch treats
final dirty accounting fixup at the end of __delete_from_page_cache() as
a debug check and adds WARN_ON_ONCE() around it. If something removes
dirty pages without proper handling that might be a bug and unwritten
data might be lost.
Hugetlbfs has no dirty pages accounting, ClearPageDirty() is enough
here.
cancel_dirty_page() in nfs_wb_page_cancel() is redundant. This is
helper for nfs_invalidate_page() and it's called only in case complete
invalidation.
The mess was started in v2.6.20 after commits 46d2277c79 ("Clean up
and make try_to_free_buffers() not race with dirty pages") and
3e67c0987d ("truncate: clear page dirtiness before running
try_to_free_buffers()") first was reverted right in v2.6.20 in commit
ecdfc9787f ("Resurrect 'try_to_free_buffers()' VM hackery"), second in
v2.6.25 commit a2b345642f ("Fix dirty page accounting leak with ext3
data=journal").
Custom fixes were introduced between these points. NFS in v2.6.23, commit
1b3b4a1a2d ("NFS: Fix a write request leak in nfs_invalidate_page()").
Kludge in __delete_from_page_cache() in v2.6.24, commit 3a6927906f ("Do

treated slightly differently just about everywhere it's used: some users

The LAYOUTCOMMIT operation means different things to different layout types.
For blocks and objects, it is both a data and metadata consistency operation.
For files and flexfiles, it is only a metadata consistency operation.
This patch separates out the 2 cases, allowing the files/flexfiles layout
drivers to optimise away the data consistency calls to layoutcommit.

Most callers in the kernel want to perform synchronous file I/O, but
still have to bloat the stack with a full struct kiocb. Split out
the parts needed in filesystem code from those in the aio code, and
only allocate those needed to pass down argument on the stack. The
aio code embedds the generic iocb in the one it allocates and can
easily get back to it by using container_of.
Also add a ->ki_complete method to struct kiocb, this is used to call
into the aio code and thus removes the dependency on aio for filesystems
impementing asynchronous operations. It will also allow other callers
to substitute their own completion callback.
We also add a new ->ki_flags field to work around the nasty layering
violation recently introduced in commit 5e33f6 ("usb: gadget: ffs: add

nfs_vm_page_mkwrite() should wait until the page cache invalidation
is finished. This is the second patch in a 2 patch series to deprecate
the NFS client's reliance on nfs_release_page() in the context of
nfs_invalidate_mapping().
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
When invalidating the page cache for a regular file, we want to first
sync all dirty data to disk and then call invalidate_inode_pages2().
The latter relies on nfs_launder_page() and nfs_release_page() to deal
respectively with dirty pages, and unstable written pages.
When commit 9590544694 ("NFS: avoid deadlocks with loop-back mounted
NFS filesystems.") changed the behaviour of nfs_release_page(), then it
made it possible for invalidate_inode_pages2() to fail with an EBUSY.
Unfortunately, that error is then propagated back to read().
Let's therefore work around the problem for now by protecting the call
to sync the data and invalidate_inode_pages2() so that they are atomic
w.r.t. the addition of new writes.
Later on, we can revisit whether or not we still need nfs_launder_page()
and nfs_release_page().

If the server does not return a valid set of attributes that we can
use to either create a file or refresh the inode, then there is no
value in calling nfs_prime_dcache().
However if we're just refreshing the inode using the attributes that
the server returned, then it shouldn't matter whether or not we have
a filehandle, as long as we check the fsid+fileid combination.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
When we call readdirplus, set the fileid normally returned by readdir
as the mounted-on-fileid, since that is commonly the case if there is
a mountpoint. To ensure that we get it right, we only set the flag if
the readdir fileid differs from the one returned in the readdirplus
attributes.
This again means that we can avoid the issues described in commit
2ef47eb1ae ("NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()"),
which only fixed NFSv4.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
If we're traversing a directory which contains a submounted filesystem,
or one that has a referral, the NFS server that is processing the READDIR
request will often return information for the underlying (mounted-on)
directory. It may, or may not, also return filehandle information.
If this happens, and the lookup in nfs_prime_dcache() returns the
dentry for the submounted directory, the filehandle comparison will
fail, and we call d_invalidate(). Post-commit 8ed936b567
("vfs: Lazily remove mounts on unlinked files and directories."), this
means the entire subtree is unmounted.
The following minimal patch addresses this problem by punting on
the invalidation if there is a submount.

"Bite-sized chunks this time, to avoid the MTA ratelimiting woes.

That laconic "some MM" is mainly the removal of remap_file_pages(),
which is a big simplification of the VM, and which gets rid of a *lot*
of random cruft and special cases because we no longer support the
non-linear mappings that it used.
From a user interface perspective, nothing has changed, because the
remap_file_pages() syscall still exists, it's just done by emulating the
old behavior by creating a lot of individual small mappings instead of
one non-linear one.
The emulation is slower than the old "native" non-linear mappings, but
nobody really uses or cares about remap_file_pages(), and simplifying
the VM is a big advantage.

Pull file locking related changes #1 from Jeff Layton:
"This patchset contains a fairly major overhaul of how file locks are
tracked within the inode. Rather than a single list, we now create a
per-inode "lock context" that contains individual lists for the file
locks, and a new dedicated spinlock for them.
There are changes in other trees that are based on top of this set so
it may be easiest to pull this in early"
* tag 'locks-v3.20-1' of git://git.samba.org/jlayton/linux:
locks: update comments that refer to inode->i_flock
locks: consolidate NULL i_flctx checks in locks_remove_file
locks: keep a count of locks on the flctx lists
locks: clean up the lm_change prototype
locks: add a dedicated spinlock to protect i_flctx lists
locks: remove i_flock field from struct inode
locks: convert lease handling to file_lock_context
locks: convert posix locks to file_lock_context
locks: move flock locks to file_lock_context
ceph: move spinlocking into ceph_encode_locks_to_buffer and ceph_count_locks
locks: add a new struct file_locking_context pointer to struct inode
locks: have locks_release_file use flock_lock_file to release generic flock locks
locks: add new struct list_head to struct file_lock
There was an extra goto here where it shouldn't be, because of a merge

whether or not we believe that returning a delegation as part of our OPEN

The feature needs to be used with care, since the client sending the request
doesn't necessarily know how other clients are using that file, and how
they may be affected by the delegation.
For this reason, our initial use of the feature will be to let the server
know when the client believes that handing out a delegation would not be
useful.

Before mirroring support was added, the pageio descriptor's pg_lseg was
set to null when an RPC was sent. Because of this, pg_init was called

Use it to indicate that LD wants to retry layoutget. LD can set
it whenever it wants the common pnfs code to return and retry

The bit gets cleared when client does a new layoutget, when client

(non-ROC case).

When it is set, generic pnfs would try to send layoutreturn right

is to use one mirror, but pgio callers may define callbacks to change

Per RFC 5661 Errata 3208:
| A client MAY always forget its layout state and associated
| layout stateid at any time (See also section 12.5.5.1).
| In such case, the client MUST use a non-layout stateid for the next
| LAYOUTGET operation. This will signal the server that the client has
| no more layouts on the file and its respective layout state can be
| released before issuing a new layout in response to LAYOUTGET.
In order to make such a signal unique to server, client needs to serialize
all layoutgets using non-layout stateid. We implement this by serializing
layoutgets when client has no layout segments at hand.

This function call was being optimized out during nfs_fhget(), leading
to situations where we have a valid fileid but still want to use the
mounted_on_fileid. For example, imagine we have our server configured
like this:
server % df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/vda1 9.1G 6.5G 1.9G 78% /
/dev/vdb1 487M 2.3M 456M 1% /exports
/dev/vdc1 487M 2.3M 456M 1% /exports/vol1
/dev/vdd1 487M 2.3M 456M 1% /exports/vol2
If our client mounts /exports and tries to do a "chown -R" across the
entire mountpoint, we will get a nasty message warning us about a circular
directory structure. Running chown with strace tells me that each directory
has the same device and inode number:
newfstatat(AT_FDCWD, "/nfs/", {st_dev=makedev(0, 38), st_ino=2, ...}) = 0
newfstatat(4, "vol1", {st_dev=makedev(0, 38), st_ino=2, ...}) = 0
newfstatat(4, "vol2", {st_dev=makedev(0, 38), st_ino=2, ...}) = 0
With this patch the mounted_on_fileid values are used for st_ino, so the
directory loop warning isn't reported.

We only support swap file calling nfs_direct_IO. However, application
might be able to get to nfs_direct_IO if it toggles O_DIRECT flag
during IO and it can deadlock because we grab inode->i_mutex in
nfs_file_direct_write(). So return 0 for such case. Then the generic
layer will fall back to buffer IO.

While we normally expect the NFSv4 client to always send the same client
owner to all servers, there are a couple of situations where that is not
the case:
1) In NFSv4.0, switching between use of '-omigration' and not will cause
the kernel to switch between using the non-uniform and uniform client
strings.
2) In NFSv4.1, or NFSv4.0 when using uniform client strings, if the
uniquifier string is suddenly changed.
This patch will catch those situations by checking the client owner id
in the trunking detection code, and will do the right thing if it notices
that the strings differ.

Currently, our trunking code will check for session trunking, but will
fail to detect client id trunking. This is a problem, because it means
that the client will fail to recognise that the two connections represent
shared state, even if they do not permit a shared session.
By removing the check for the server minor id, and only checking the
major id, we will end up doing the right thing in both cases: we close
down the new nfs_client and fall back to using the existing one.

Use the correct calculation of the maximum size of a clientaddr4
when encoding and decoding SETCLIENTID operations. clientaddr4 is
defined in section 2.2.10 of RFC3530bis-31.
The usage in encode_setclientid_maxsz is missing the 4-byte length
in both strings, but is otherwise correct. decode_setclientid_maxsz
simply asks for a page of receive buffer space, which is
unnecessarily large (more than 4KB).
Note that a SETCLIENTID reply is either clientid+verifier, or

Recent work in the pgio layer made it possible for there to be more than one
request per page. This caused a subtle change in commit behavior, because
write.c:nfs_commit_unstable_pages compares the number of *pages* waiting for
writeback against the number of requests on a commit list to choose when to
send a COMMIT in a non-blocking flush.
This is probably hard to hit in normal operation - you have to be using
rsize/wsize < PAGE_SIZE, or pnfs with lots of boundaries that are not page
aligned to have a noticeable change in behavior.

Any attempt to call nfs_remove_bad_delegation() while a delegation is being
returned is currently a no-op. This means that we can end up looping
forever in nfs_end_delegation_return() if something causes the delegation
to be revoked.
This patch adds a mechanism whereby the state recovery code can communicate
to the delegation return code that the delegation is no longer valid and
that it should not be used when reclaiming state.
It also changes the return value for nfs4_handle_delegation_recall_error()
to ensure that nfs_end_delegation_return() does not reattempt the lock
reclaim before state recovery is done.

This patch removes the assumption made previously, that we only need to
check the delegation stateid when it matches the stateid on a cached
open.
If we believe that we hold a delegation for this file, then we must assume
that its stateid may have been revoked or expired too. If we don't test it
then our state recovery process may end up caching open/lock state in a
situation where it should not.
We therefore rename the function nfs41_clear_delegation_stateid as
nfs41_check_delegation_stateid, and change it to always run through the
delegation stateid test and recovery process as outlined in RFC5661.

For pNFS direct writes, layout driver may dynamically allocate ds_cinfo.buckets.
So we need to take care to free them when freeing dreq.
Ideally this needs to be done inside layout driver where ds_cinfo.buckets
are allocated. But buckets are attached to dreq and reused across LD IO iterations.
So I feel it's OK to free them in the generic layer.

Pull file locking related changes from Jeff Layton:
"This release is a little more busy for file locking changes than the
last:
- a set of patches from Kinglong Mee to fix the lockowner handling in
knfsd
- a pile of cleanups to the internal file lease API. This should get
us a bit closer to allowing for setlease methods that can block.
There are some dependencies between mine and Bruce's trees this cycle,
and I based my tree on top of the requisite patches in Bruce's tree"

You cannot call pnfs_put_lseg_async() more than once per lseg, so it
is really an inappropriate way to deal with a refcount issue.
Instead, replace it with a function that decrements the refcount, and
puts the final 'free' operation (which is incompatible with locks) on
the workqueue.

Commit 2f60ea6b8c ("NFSv4: The NFSv4.0 client must send RENEW calls if it holds a delegation") set the NFS4_RENEW_TIMEOUT flag in nfs4_renew_state, and does
not put an nfs41_proc_async_sequence call, the NFSv4.1 lease renewal heartbeat
call, on the wire to renew the NFSv4.1 state if the flag was not set.
The NFS4_RENEW_TIMEOUT flag is set when "now" is after the last renewal
(cl_last_renewal) plus the lease time divided by 3. This is arbitrary and
sometimes does the following:
In normal operation, the only way a future state renewal call is put on the
wire is via a call to nfs4_schedule_state_renewal, which schedules a
nfs4_renew_state workqueue task. nfs4_renew_state determines if the
NFS4_RENEW_TIMEOUT should be set, and the calls nfs41_proc_async_sequence,
which only gets sent if the NFS4_RENEW_TIMEOUT flag is set.
Then the nfs41_proc_async_sequence rpc_release function schedules
another state remewal via nfs4_schedule_state_renewal.
Without this change we can get into a state where an application stops
accessing the NFSv4.1 share, state renewal calls stop due to the
NFS4_RENEW_TIMEOUT flag _not_ being set. The only way to recover
from this situation is with a clientid re-establishment, once the application
resumes and the server has timed out the lease and so returns
NFS4ERR_BAD_SESSION on the subsequent SEQUENCE operation.
An example application:
open, lock, write a file.
sleep for 6 * lease (could be less)
ulock, close.
In the above example with NFSv4.1 delegations enabled, without this change,
there are no OP_SEQUENCE state renewal calls during the sleep, and the
clientid is recovered due to lease expiration on the close.
This issue does not occur with NFSv4.1 delegations disabled, nor with
NFSv4.0, with or without delegations enabled.

The current open/lock state recovery unfortunately does not handle errors
such as NFS4ERR_CONN_NOT_BOUND_TO_SESSION correctly. Instead of looping,
just proceeds as if the state manager is finished recovering.
This patch ensures that we loop back, handle higher priority errors
and complete the open/lock state recovery.

If a NFSv4.x server returns NFS4ERR_STALE_CLIENTID in response to a
CREATE_SESSION or SETCLIENTID_CONFIRM in order to tell us that it rebooted
a second time, then the client will currently take this to mean that it must
declare all locks to be stale, and hence ineligible for reboot recovery.
RFC3530 and RFC5661 both suggest that the client should instead rely on the
server to respond to inelegible open share, lock and delegation reclaim
requests with NFS4ERR_NO_GRACE in this situation.
