caf6f9c8a3 asm-generic: Remove unneeded __ARCH_WANT_SYS_LLSEEK macro
The sys_llseek sytem call is needed on all 32-bit architectures and
none of the 64-bit ones, so we can remove the __ARCH_WANT_SYS_LLSEEK guard
and simplify the include/asm-generic/unistd.h header further.

Since 32-bit tasks can run either natively or in compat mode on 64-bit
architectures, we have to check for both !CONFIG_64BIT and CONFIG_COMPAT.

There are a few 64-bit architectures that also reference sys_llseek
in their 64-bit ABI (e.g. sparc), but I verified that those all
select CONFIG_COMPAT, so the #if check is still correct here. It's
a bit odd to include it in the syscall table though, as it's the
same as sys_lseek() on 64-bit, but with strange calling conventions.

fb37397594 asm-generic: Move common compat types to asm-generic/compat.h
While converting compat system call handlers to work on 32-bit
architectures, I found a number of types used in those handlers
that are identical between all architectures.

Let's move all the identical ones into asm-generic/compat.h to avoid
having to add even more identical definitions of those types.

For unknown reasons, mips defines __compat_gid32_t, __compat_uid32_t
and compat_caddr_t as signed, while all others have them unsigned.
This seems to be a mistake, but I'm leaving it alone here. The other
types all differ by size or alignment on at least on architecture.

compat_aio_context_t is currently defined in linux/compat.h but
also needed for compat_sys_io_getevents(), so let's move it into
the same place.

While we still have not decided whether the 32-bit time handling
will always use the compat syscalls, or in which form, I think this
is a useful cleanup that we can merge regardless.

82b355d161 y2038: Remove newstat family from default syscall set
We have four generations of stat() syscalls:
- the oldstat syscalls that are only used on the older architectures
- the newstat family that is used on all 64-bit architectures but
  lacked support for large files on 32-bit architectures.
- the stat64 family that is used mostly on 32-bit architectures to
  replace newstat
- statx() to replace all of the above, adding 64-bit timestamps among
  other things.

We already compile stat64 only on those architectures that need it,
but newstat is always built, including on those that don't reference
it. This adds a new __ARCH_WANT_NEW_STAT symbol along the lines of
__ARCH_WANT_OLD_STAT and __ARCH_WANT_STAT64 to control compilation of
newstat. All architectures that need it use an explict define, the
others now get a little bit smaller, and future architecture (including
64-bit targets) won't ever see it.

9afc5eee65 y2038: globally rename compat_time to old_time32
Christoph Hellwig suggested a slightly different path for handling
backwards compatibility with the 32-bit time_t based system calls:

Rather than simply reusing the compat_sys_* entry points on 32-bit
architectures unchanged, we get rid of those entry points and the
compat_time types by renaming them to something that makes more sense
on 32-bit architectures (which don't have a compat mode otherwise),
and then share the entry points under the new name with the 64-bit
architectures that use them for implementing the compatibility.

The following types and interfaces are renamed here, and moved
from linux/compat_time.h to linux/time32.h:

As we already have aliases in place, this patch addresses only the
instances that are relevant to the system call interface in particular,
not those that occur in device drivers and other modules. Those
will get handled separately, while providing the 64-bit version
of the respective interfaces.

I'm not renaming the timex, rusage and itimerval structures, as we are
still debating what the new interface will look like, and whether we
will need a replacement at all.

This also doesn't change the names of the syscall entry points, which can
be done more easily when we actually switch over the 32-bit architectures
to use them, at that point we need to change COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINEx to
SYSCALL_DEFINEx with a new name, e.g. with a _time32 suffix.

8801ccb9fa parisc: Fix boot failure of 64-bit kernel
Commit c8921d72e3 ("parisc: Fix and improve kernel stack unwinding")
broke booting of 64-bit kernels. On 64-bit kernels function pointers are
actually function descriptors which require dereferencing. In this patch
we instead declare functions in assembly code which are referenced from
C-code as external data pointers with the ENTRY() macro and thus can use
a simple external reference to the functions.

50a7ca3c6f mm: convert return type of handle_mm_fault() caller to vm_fault_t
Use new return type vm_fault_t for fault handler.  For now, this is just
documenting that the function returns a VM_FAULT value rather than an
errno.  Once all instances are converted, vm_fault_t will become a
distinct type.

Ref-> commit 1c8f422059 ("mm: change return type to vm_fault_t")

In this patch all the caller of handle_mm_fault() are changed to return
vm_fault_t type.

c8921d72e3 parisc: Fix and improve kernel stack unwinding
This patchset fixes and improves stack unwinding a lot:
1. Show backward stack traces with up to 30 callsites
2. Add callinfo to ENTRY_CFI() such that every assembler function will get an
   entry in the unwind table
3. Use constants instead of numbers in call_on_stack()
4. Do not depend on CONFIG_KALLSYMS to generate backtraces.
5. Speed up backtrace generation

Without this patch, unwind info in the kernel is often wrong for various
functions.

3b885ac1dc parisc: Remove unnecessary barriers from spinlock.h
Now that mb() is an instruction barrier, it will slow performance if we issue
unnecessary barriers.

The spinlock defines have a number of unnecessary barriers.  The __ldcw()
define is both a hardware and compiler barrier.  The mb() barriers in the
routines using __ldcw() serve no purpose.

The only barrier needed is the one in arch_spin_unlock().  We need to ensure
all accesses are complete prior to releasing the lock.

7797167ffd parisc: Remove ordered stores from syscall.S
Now that we use a sync prior to releasing the locks in syscall.S, we don't need
the PA 2.0 ordered stores used to release some locks.  Using an ordered store,
potentially slows the release and subsequent code.

There are a number of other ordered stores and loads that serve no purpose.  I
have converted these to normal stores.

93cb8e20d5 parisc: Drop architecture-specific ENOTSUP define
parisc is the only Linux architecture which has defined a value for ENOTSUP.
All other architectures #define ENOTSUP as EOPNOTSUPP in their libc headers.

Having an own value for ENOTSUP which is different than EOPNOTSUPP often gives
problems with userspace programs which expect both to be the same.  One such
example is a build error in the libuv package, as can be seen in
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=900237.

Since we dropped HP-UX support, there is no real benefit in keeping an own
value for ENOTSUP. This patch drops the parisc value for ENOTSUP from the
kernel sources. glibc needs no patch, it reuses the exported headers.

7f15010538 parisc: always use flush_kernel_dcache_range for DMA cache maintainance
Current the S/G list based DMA ops use flush_kernel_vmap_range which
contains a few UP optimizations, while the rest of the DMA operations
uses flush_kernel_dcache_range.  The single vs sg operations are supposed
to have the same effect, so they should use the same routines.  Use
the more conservation version for now, but if people more familiar with
parisc think the vmap version is generally fine for DMA we should switch
all interfaces over to it.

a34a9b9682 parisc: merge pcx_dma_ops and pcxl_dma_ops
The only difference is that pcxl supports dma coherent allocations, while
pcx only supports non-consistent allocations and otherwise fails.

But dma_alloc* is not in the fast path, and merging these two allows an
easy migration path to the generic dma-noncoherent implementation, so
do it.

3ca17b1f36 lib/ubsan: remove null-pointer checks
With gcc-8 fsanitize=null become very noisy.  GCC started to complain
about things like &a->b, where 'a' is NULL pointer.  There is no NULL
dereference, we just calculate address to struct member.  It's
technically undefined behavior so UBSAN is correct to report it.  But as
long as there is no real NULL-dereference, I think, we should be fine.

-fno-delete-null-pointer-checks compiler flag should protect us from any
consequences.  So let's just no use -fsanitize=null as it's not useful
for us.  If there is a real NULL-deref we will see crash.  Even if
userspace mapped something at NULL (root can do this), with things like
SMAP should catch the issue.

fedb8da963 parisc: Define mb() and add memory barriers to assembler unlock sequences
For years I thought all parisc machines executed loads and stores in
order. However, Jeff Law recently indicated on gcc-patches that this is
not correct. There are various degrees of out-of-order execution all the
way back to the PA7xxx processor series (hit-under-miss). The PA8xxx
series has full out-of-order execution for both integer operations, and
loads and stores.

For this reason, we need to define mb() and to insert a memory barrier
before the store unlocking spinlocks. This ensures that all memory
accesses are complete prior to unlocking. The ldcw instruction performs

80b14dee2b net: Add a new socket option for a future transmit time.
This patch introduces SO_TXTIME. User space enables this option in
order to pass a desired future transmit time in a CMSG when calling
sendmsg(2). The argument to this socket option is a 8-bytes long struct
provided by the uapi header net_tstamp.h defined as:

Note that new fields were added to struct sock by filling a 2-bytes

- atomic_dec_if_positive is optional for atomic_t, and is mandatory for atomic64_t.

Let's make these consistently optional for both. At the same time, let's
clean up the existing fallbacks to use atomic_try_cmpxchg().

The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly.

wrappers around the underlying atomic. Specifically:

Rather than have these definitions duplicated in all architectures, with
minor inconsistencies in formatting and documentation, let's make these
operations optional, with default fallbacks as above. Implementations
must now provide a preprocessor symbol.

The instrumented atomics are updated accordingly.

Both x86 and m68k have custom implementations, which are left as-is,
given preprocessor symbols to avoid being overridden.

There should be no functional change as a result of this patch.

must define a preprocessor symbol for it. The instrumented atomics are
updated accordingly.

Note that arch/arc's existing atomic_fetch_add_unless() had redundant
barriers, as these are already present in its atomic_cmpxchg()
implementation.

bfc18e389c atomics/treewide: Rename __atomic_add_unless() => atomic_fetch_add_unless()
While __atomic_add_unless() was originally intended as a building-block
for atomic_add_unless(), it's now used in a number of places around the
kernel. It's the only common atomic operation named __atomic*(), rather
than atomic_*(), and for consistency it would be better named
atomic_fetch_add_unless().

This lack of consistency is slightly confusing, and gets in the way of
scripting atomics. Given that, let's clean things up and promote it to
an official part of the atomics API, in the form of
atomic_fetch_add_unless().

This patch converts definitions and invocations over to the new name,
including the instrumented version, using the following script:

1f2f01b122 kbuild: add machine size to CHECKFLAGS
By default, sparse assumes a 64bit machine when compiled on x86-64
and 32bit when compiled on anything else.

This can of course create all sort of problems for the other archs, like
issuing false warnings ('shift too big (32) for type unsigned long'), or
worse, failing to emit legitimate warnings.

Fix this by adding the -m32/-m64 flag, depending on CONFIG_64BIT,
to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs).
Also, remove the now unneeded -m32/-m64 in arch specific Makefiles.

145167650b kbuild: add endianness flag to CHEKCFLAGS
The kernel depends on macros like __BYTE_ORDER__,
__BIG_ENDIAN__ or __LITTLE_ENDIAN__.

OTOH, sparse doesn't know about the endianness of the kernel and
by default uses the same as the machine on which sparse was built.

Ensure that sparse can predefine the macros corresponding to
how the kernel was configured by adding -m{big,little}-endian
to CHECKFLAGS in the main Makefile (and so for all archs).
Also, remove the equivalent done in arch specific Makefiles.

4fe581d7f1 y2038: IPC system call conversion
This is a follow-up to Deepa's work on the timekeeping system calls,
 providing a y2038-safe syscall API for SYSVIPC. It uses a combination
 of two strategies:
 
 For sys_msgctl, sys_semctl and sys_shmctl, I do not introduce a completely
 new set of replacement system calls, but instead extend the existing
 ones to return data in the reserved fields of the normal data structure.
 
 This should be completely transparent to any existing user space, and
 only after the 32-bit time_t wraps, it will make a difference in the
 returned data.
 
 libc implementations will consequently have to provide their own data
 structures when they move to 64-bit time_t, and convert the structures
 in user space from the ones returned by the kernel.
 
 In contrast, mq_timedsend, mq_timedreceive and and semtimedop all do
 need to change because having a libc redefine the timespec type
 breaks the ABI, so with this series there will be two separate entry
 points for 32-bit architectures.
 
 There are three cases here:
 
 - little-endian architectures (except powerpc and mips) can use
   the normal layout and just cast the data structure to the user space
   type that contains 64-bit numbers.
 
 - parisc and sparc can do the same thing with big-endian user space
 
 - little-endian powerpc and most big-endian architectures have
   to flip the upper and lower 32-bit halves of the time_t value in memory,
   but can otherwise keep using the normal layout
 
 - mips and big-endian xtensa need to be more careful because
   they are not consistent in their definitions, and they have to provide
   custom libc implementations for the system calls to use 64-bit time_t.

This was used by the ide, scsi and networking code in the past to
determine if they should bounce payloads.  Now that the dma mapping
always have to support dma to all physical memory (thanks to swiotlb

ccf75290cc signal/parisc: Use force_sig_fault where appropriate
Filling in struct siginfo before calling force_sig_info a tedious and
error prone process, where once in a great while the wrong fields
are filled out, and siginfo has been inconsistently cleared.

Simplify this process by using the helper force_sig_fault.  Which
takes as a parameters all of the information it needs, ensures
all of the fiddly bits of filling in struct siginfo are done properly
and then calls force_sig_info.

In short about a 5 line reduction in code for every time force_sig_info
is called, which makes the calling function clearer.

Keeping the mcerr handling logic out of the force_sig_info call below.

This ensures that only and always in the mcerr case is lsb interesting.

This ensures setting set si_lsb in the future won't accidentally
stomp another siginfo field in the non mcerr case.

3eb0f5193b signal: Ensure every siginfo we send has all bits initialized
Call clear_siginfo to ensure every stack allocated siginfo is properly
initialized before being passed to the signal sending functions.

Note: It is not safe to depend on C initializers to initialize struct
siginfo on the stack because C is allowed to skip holes when
initializing a structure.

The initialization of struct siginfo in tracehook_report_syscall_exit
was moved from the helper user_single_step_siginfo into
tracehook_report_syscall_exit itself, to make it clear that the local
variable siginfo gets fully initialized.

In a few cases the scope of struct siginfo has been reduced to make it
clear that siginfo siginfo is not used on other paths in the function
in which it is declared.

Instances of using memset to initialize siginfo have been replaced
with calls clear_siginfo for clarity.

The read_persistent_clock() uses a timespec, which is not year 2038 safe
on 32bit systems. On parisc architecture, we have implemented generic
RTC drivers that can be used to compensate the system suspend time, but
the RTC time can not represent the nanosecond resolution, so this patch
just converts to read_persistent_clock64() with timespec64.

parisc, uses a nonstandard variation of the generic sysvipc
data structures, intended to have the padding moved around
so it can deal with big-endian 32-bit user space that has
64-bit time_t.

Unlike most architectures, parisc actually succeeded in
defining this right for big-endian CPUs, but as everyone else
got it wrong, we just use the same hack everywhere.

This takes just take the same approach here that we have for
the asm-generic headers and adds separate 32-bit fields for the
upper halves of the timestamps, to let libc deal with the mess
in user space.

All the current architecture specific defines for these
are the same. Refactor these common defines to a common
header file.

The new common linux/compat_time.h is also useful as it
will eventually be used to hold all the defines that
are needed for compat time types that support non y2038
safe types. New architectures need not have to define these
new types as they will only use new y2038 safe syscalls.
This file can be deleted after y2038 when we stop supporting
non y2038 safe syscalls.

The patch also requires an operation similar to:

a4ff8e8620 mm: introduce MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE
Patch series "mm: introduce MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE", v2.

This has started as a follow up discussion [3][4] resulting in the
runtime failure caused by hardening patch [5] which removes MAP_FIXED
from the elf loader because MAP_FIXED is inherently dangerous as it
might silently clobber an existing underlying mapping (e.g.  stack).
The reason for the failure is that some architectures enforce an
alignment for the given address hint without MAP_FIXED used (e.g.  for
shared or file backed mappings).

One way around this would be excluding those archs which do alignment
tricks from the hardening [6].  The patch is really trivial but it has
been objected, rightfully so, that this screams for a more generic
solution.  We basically want a non-destructive MAP_FIXED.

The first patch introduced MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE which enforces the given
address but unlike MAP_FIXED it fails with EEXIST if the given range
conflicts with an existing one.  The flag is introduced as a completely
new one rather than a MAP_FIXED extension because of the backward
compatibility.  We really want a never-clobber semantic even on older
kernels which do not recognize the flag.  Unfortunately mmap sucks
wrt flags evaluation because we do not EINVAL on unknown flags.  On
those kernels we would simply use the traditional hint based semantic so
the caller can still get a different address (which sucks) but at least
not silently corrupt an existing mapping.  I do not see a good way
around that.  Except we won't export expose the new semantic to the
userspace at all.

It seems there are users who would like to have something like that.
Jemalloc has been mentioned by Michael Ellerman [7]

Florian Weimer has mentioned the following:

The second patch simply replaces MAP_FIXED use in elf loader by
MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE.  I believe other places which rely on MAP_FIXED
should follow.  Actually real MAP_FIXED usages should be docummented
properly and they should be more of an exception.

This patch (of 2):

MAP_FIXED is used quite often to enforce mapping at the particular range.
The main problem of this flag is, however, that it is inherently dangerous
because it unmaps existing mappings covered by the requested range.  This
can cause silent memory corruptions.  Some of them even with serious
security implications.  While the current semantic might be really
desiderable in many cases there are others which would want to enforce the
given range but rather see a failure than a silent memory corruption on a
clashing range.  Please note that there is no guarantee that a given range
is obeyed by the mmap even when it is free - e.g.  arch specific code is
allowed to apply an alignment.

Introduce a new MAP_FIXED_NOREPLACE flag for mmap to achieve this
behavior.  It has the same semantic as MAP_FIXED wrt.  the given address
request with a single exception that it fails with EEXIST if the requested
address is already covered by an existing mapping.  We still do rely on
get_unmaped_area to handle all the arch specific MAP_FIXED treatment and
check for a conflicting vma after it returns.

The flag is introduced as a completely new one rather than a MAP_FIXED
extension because of the backward compatibility.  We really want a
never-clobber semantic even on older kernels which do not recognize the
flag.  Unfortunately mmap sucks wrt.  flags evaluation because we do not
EINVAL on unknown flags.  On those kernels we would simply use the
traditional hint based semantic so the caller can still get a different
address (which sucks) but at least not silently corrupt an existing
mapping.  I do not see a good way around that.

8f2af155b5 exec: pass stack rlimit into mm layout functions
Patch series "exec: Pin stack limit during exec".

Attempts to solve problems with the stack limit changing during exec
continue to be frustrated[1][2].  In addition to the specific issues
around the Stack Clash family of flaws, Andy Lutomirski pointed out[3]
other places during exec where the stack limit is used and is assumed to
be unchanging.  Given the many places it gets used and the fact that it
can be manipulated/raced via setrlimit() and prlimit(), I think the only
way to handle this is to move away from the "current" view of the stack
limit and instead attach it to the bprm, and plumb this down into the
functions that need to know the stack limits.  This series implements
the approach.

71d577db01 parisc: Switch to generic COMPAT_BINFMT_ELF
Drop our own compat binfmt implementation in
arch/parisc/kernel/binfmt_elf32.c in favour of the generic
implementation with CONFIG_COMPAT_BINFMT_ELF.

While cleaning up the dependencies, I noticed that ELF_PLATFORM was strangely
defined: On a 32-bit kernel, it was defined to "PARISC", while when running in
compat mode on a 64-bit kernel it was defined to "PARISC32". Since it doesn't
seem to be used in glibc yet, it's now defined in both cases to "PARISC". In
any case, it can be distinguished because it's either a 32-bit or a 64-bit ELF
file.

cb9f753a37 mm: fix races between swapoff and flush dcache
Thanks to commit 4b3ef9daa4 ("mm/swap: split swap cache into 64MB
trunks"), after swapoff the address_space associated with the swap
device will be freed.  So page_mapping() users which may touch the
address_space need some kind of mechanism to prevent the address_space
from being freed during accessing.

The dcache flushing functions (flush_dcache_page(), etc) in architecture
specific code may access the address_space of swap device for anonymous
pages in swap cache via page_mapping() function.  But in some cases
there are no mechanisms to prevent the swap device from being swapoff,
for example,

The address space may be accessed after being freed.

But from cachetlb.txt and Russell King, flush_dcache_page() only care
about file cache pages, for anonymous pages, flush_anon_page() should be
used.  The implementation of flush_dcache_page() in all architectures
follows this too.  They will check whether page_mapping() is NULL and
whether mapping_mapped() is true to determine whether to flush the
dcache immediately.  And they will use interval tree (mapping->i_mmap)
to find all user space mappings.  While mapping_mapped() and
mapping->i_mmap isn't used by anonymous pages in swap cache at all.

So, to fix the race between swapoff and flush dcache, __page_mapping()
is add to return the address_space for file cache pages and NULL
otherwise.  All page_mapping() invoking in flush dcache functions are
replaced with page_mapping_file().

 "System calls are interaction points between userspace and the kernel.
  Therefore, system call functions such as sys_xyzzy() or
  compat_sys_xyzzy() should only be called from userspace via the
  syscall table, but not from elsewhere in the kernel.

  At least on 64-bit x86, it will likely be a hard requirement from
  v4.17 onwards to not call system call functions in the kernel: It is
  better to use use a different calling convention for system calls
  there, where struct pt_regs is decoded on-the-fly in a syscall wrapper
  which then hands processing over to the actual syscall function. This
  means that only those parameters which are actually needed for a
  specific syscall are passed on during syscall entry, instead of
  filling in six CPU registers with random user space content all the
  time (which may cause serious trouble down the call chain). Those
  x86-specific patches will be pushed through the x86 tree in the near
  future.

  Moreover, rules on how data may be accessed may differ between kernel
  data and user data. This is another reason why calling sys_xyzzy() is
  generally a bad idea, and -- at most -- acceptable in arch-specific
  code.

  This patchset removes all in-kernel calls to syscall functions in the
  kernel with the exception of arch/. On top of this, it cleans up the
  three places where many syscalls are referenced or prototyped, namely

df260e21e6 fs: add ksys_truncate() wrapper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_truncate()
Using the ksys_truncate() wrapper allows us to get rid of in-kernel
calls to the sys_truncate() syscall. The ksys_ prefix denotes that this
function is meant as a drop-in replacement for the syscall. In
particular, it uses the same calling convention as sys_truncate().

This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls.
