34becfdb94 drm/i915/params: fix i915.reset module param type
The reset member in i915_params was previously changed to unsigned, but
this failed to change the actual module parameter.

db80066cf3 drm/i915/params: prevent changing module params runtime
Only support runtime changes through the debugfs.

i915.verbose_state_checks remains an exception, and is not exposed via
debugfs.

This depends on IGT having been updated to use the debugfs for modifying
the parameters.

34ffabe311 drm/i915: Remove 'prefault_disable' modparam
The 'prefault_disable' modparam was used by IGT to prevent a few
prefaulting operations to make fault handling under struct_mutex more
prominent. With the removal of struct_mutex, this is not as important
any more and we have almost completely stopped using the parameter. The
remaining use in execbuf is now immaterial and can be dropped without
affecting coverage.

We must re-address the idea of fault injection though.

9ac7d53d70 drm/i915: Auto detect DPCD backlight support by default
Turns out we actually already have some companies, such as Lenovo,
shipping machines with AMOLED screens that don't allow controlling the
backlight through the usual PWM interface and only allow controlling it
through the standard EDP DPCD interface. One example of one of these
laptops is the X1 Extreme 2nd Generation.

Since we've got systems that need this turned on by default now to have
backlight controls working out of the box, let's start auto-detecting it
for systems by default based on what the VBT tells us. We do this by
changing the default value for the enable_dpcd_backlight module param
from 0 to -1.

c43c5a8818 drm/i915/params: add i915 parameters to debugfs
Add a debugfs subdirectory i915_params with all the i915 module
parameters. This is a first step, with lots of boilerplate, and not much
benefit yet.

This will result in a new device specific debugfs directory at
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/<N>/i915_params duplicating the module specific
sysfs directory at /sys/module/i915/parameters/. Going forward, all
users of the parameters should use the debugfs, with the module
parameters being phased out.

Add debugfs permissions to I915_PARAMS_FOR_EACH(). This duplicates the
mode with module parameter sysfs, but the goal is to make the module
parameters read-only initial values for device specific parameters.

0 mode will bypass debugfs creation. Use it for verbose_state_checks
which will need special attention in follow-up work.

1629224324 drm/i915/lmem: add the fake lmem region
Intended for upstream testing so that we can still exercise the LMEM
plumbing and !i915_ggtt_has_aperture paths. Smoke tested on Skull Canyon
device. This works by allocating an intel_memory_region for a reserved
portion of system memory, which we treat like LMEM. For the LMEMBAR we
steal the aperture and 1:1 it map to the stolen region.

To enable simply set the i915 modparam fake_lmem_start= on the kernel
cmdline with the start of reserved region(see memmap=). The size of the
region we can use is determined by the size of the mappable aperture, so
the size of reserved region should be >= mappable_end. For now we only
enable for the selftests. Depends on CONFIG_DRM_I915_UNSTABLE being
enabled.

eg. memmap=2G$16G i915.fake_lmem_start=0x400000000

7ef5ef5cde drm/i915: add force_probe module parameter to replace alpha_support
The i915.alpha_support module parameter has caused some confusion along
the way. Add new i915.force_probe parameter to specify PCI IDs of
devices to probe, when the devices are recognized but not automatically
probed by the driver. The name is intended to reflect what the parameter
effectively does, avoiding any overloaded semantics of "alpha" and
"support".

The parameter supports "" to disable, "<pci-id>,[<pci-id>,...]" to
enable force probe for one or more devices, and "*" to enable force
probe for all known devices.

Also add new CONFIG_DRM_I915_FORCE_PROBE config option to replace the
DRM_I915_ALPHA_SUPPORT option. This defaults to "*" if
DRM_I915_ALPHA_SUPPORT=y.

Instead of replacing i915.alpha_support immediately, let the two coexist
for a while, with a deprecation message, for a transition period.

121981fafe drm/i915/guc: Combine enable_guc_loading|submission modparams
We currently have two module parameters that control GuC:
"enable_guc_loading" and "enable_guc_submission". Whenever
we need submission=1, we also need loading=1. We also need
loading=1 when we want to want to load and verify the HuC.

Lets combine above module parameters into one "enable_guc"
modparam. New supported bit values are:

0=disable GuC (no GuC submission, no HuC)
 1=enable GuC submission
 2=enable HuC load

Special value "-1" can be used to let driver decide what
option should be enabled for given platform based on
hardware/firmware availability or preference.

Explicit enabling any of the GuC features makes GuC load
a required step, fallback to non-GuC mode will not be
supported.

It has been many years since the last confirmed sighting (and fix) of an

and end up disabling the entire runtime pm instead (the option is not a

Furthermore, it allows users to set known dangerous values which were
intended for testing and not for production use. For testing, we can

ab3595bc4f drm/i915/opregion: let user specify override VBT via firmware load
Sometimes it would be most enlightening to debug systems by replacing
the VBT to be used. For example, in the referenced bug the BIOS provides
different VBT depending on the boot mode (UEFI vs. legacy). It would be
interesting to try the failing boot mode with the VBT from the working
boot, and see if that makes a difference.

Add a module parameter to load the VBT using the firmware loader, not
unlike the EDID firmware mechanism.

As a starting point for experimenting, one can pick up the BIOS provided
VBT from /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_opregion/i915_vbt.

ed35dd7b25 drm/i915: Update i915.reset to handle engine resets
In preparation for engine reset work update this parameter to handle more
than one type of reset. Default at the moment is still full gpu reset.

b3420dde38 drm/i915/uc: Add params for specifying firmware
`guc_firmware_path` and `huc_firmware_path` module parameters are added.

Using the parameter disables version checks and loads desired firmware
instead of the default one.

v2: make params unsafe && notice about disabled fw check (J. Lahtinen)

8d2b47dde8 drm/i915: Enable atomic support by default on supported platforms.
i915 is pretty much feature complete. Support for atomic i915-specific
connector properties is still missing; those properties can (for now)
only be set through the legacy ioctl.

ILK style watermarks and gen9+ watermarks are handled atomically,
and nonblocking modesets work. FBC has also been made to work with
atomic.

gen4x- and vlv/chv watermarks still need to be fixed, so disable atomic
by default there for now.

Flip the switch!!

1a2010ca52 drm/i915: Use bool i915_param.alpha_support
The alpha_support module option can only take one of two values, so
assign it to a boolean type. The only advantage is in pretty printing
via /sys/module/i915/parameters/alpha_support and elsewhere.

41736a8e33 drm/i915: Use the precomputed value for whether to enable command parsing
As i915.enable_cmd_parser is an unsafe option, make it read-only at
runtime. Now that it is constant, we can use the value determined during
initialisation as to whether we need the cmdparser at execbuffer time.

v2: Remove the inline for its single user, it is clear enough (and
shorter) without!

c007fb4a38 drm/i915: rename preliminary_hw_support to alpha_support
The term "preliminary hardware support" has always caused confusion both
among users and developers. It has always been about preliminary driver
support for new hardware, and not so much about preliminary hardware. Of
course, initially both the software and hardware are in early stages,
but the distinction becomes more clear when the user picks up production
hardware and an older kernel to go with it, with just the early support
we had for the hardware at the time the kernel was released. The user
has to specifically enable the alpha quality *driver* support for the
hardware in that specific kernel version.

Rename preliminary_hw_support to alpha_support to emphasize that the
module parameter, config option, and flag are about software, not about
hardware. Improve the language in help texts and debug logging as well.

This appears to be a good time to do the change, as there are currently
no platforms with preliminary^W alpha support.
