This commit makes the rcu_grace_period tracepoint use gp_seq instead
of ->gpnum or ->completed. It also introduces a "cpuofl-bgp" string to
less obscurely indicate when a CPU has gone offline while a grace period
is waiting on it.

This adds a few more tracepoints that have proven useful when
debugging issues with the FSI bus.
This also makes echo_delay() use clock_zeros() instead of
open-code it in order to share the tracepoint.

It is unwise to take spin locks from the handlers of trace events.
Mainly, because they can introduce lockups, because it introduces locks
in places that are normally not tested. Worse yet, because trace events
are tucked away in the include/trace/events/ directory, locks that are
taken there are forgotten about.
As a general rule, I tell people never to take any locks in a trace
event handler.
Several cgroup trace event handlers call cgroup_path() which eventually
takes the kernfs_rename_lock spinlock. This injects the spinlock in the
code without people realizing it. It also can cause issues for the
PREEMPT_RT patch, as the spinlock becomes a mutex, and the trace event
handlers are called with preemption disabled.
By moving the calculation of the cgroup_path() out of the trace event
handlers and into a macro (surrounded by a
trace_cgroup_##type##_enabled()), then we could place the cgroup_path
into a string, and pass that to the trace event. Not only does this
remove the taking of the spinlock out of the trace event handler, but
it also means that the cgroup_path() only needs to be called once (it
is currently called twice, once to get the length to reserver the
buffer for, and once again to get the path itself. Now it only needs to
be done once.

Currently trace_sock_exceed_buf_limit() only show rmem info,
but wmem limit may also be hit.
So expose wmem info in this tracepoint as well.
Regarding memcg, I think it is better to introduce a new tracepoint(if
that is needed), i.e. trace_memcg_limit_hit other than show memcg info in
trace_sock_exceed_buf_limit.

Add the possibility to apply and query the clock signal duty cycle ratio.
This is useful when the duty cycle of the clock signal depends on some
other parameters controlled by the clock framework.
For example, the duty cycle of a divider may depends on the raw divider
setting (ratio = N / div) , which is controlled by the CCF. In such case,
going through the pwm framework to control the duty cycle ratio of this
clock would be a burden.
A clock provider is not required to implement the operation to set and get
the duty cycle. If it does not implement .get_duty_cycle(), the ratio is
assumed to be 50%.
This change also adds a new flag, CLK_DUTY_CYCLE_PARENT. This flag should
be used to indicate that a clock, such as gates and muxes, may inherit
the duty cycle ratio of its parent clock. If a clock does not provide a
get_duty_cycle() callback and has CLK_DUTY_CYCLE_PARENT, then the call
will be directly forwarded to its parent clock, if any. For
set_duty_cycle(), the clock should also have CLK_SET_RATE_PARENT for the
call to be forwarded

The FSI protocol defines two modes of recovery from CRC errors,
this implements both:
- If the device returns an ECRC (it detected a CRC error in the
command), then we simply issue the command again.
- If the master detects a CRC error in the response, we send
an E_POLL command which requests a resend of the response
without actually re-executing the command (which could otherwise
have unwanted side effects such as dequeuing a FIFO twice).

Expose a new system call allowing each thread to register one userspace
memory area to be used as an ABI between kernel and user-space for two
purposes: user-space restartable sequences and quick access to read the
current CPU number value from user-space.
* Restartable sequences (per-cpu atomics)
Restartables sequences allow user-space to perform update operations on
per-cpu data without requiring heavy-weight atomic operations.
The restartable critical sections (percpu atomics) work has been started
by Paul Turner and Andrew Hunter. It lets the kernel handle restart of
critical sections. [1] [2] The re-implementation proposed here brings a
few simplifications to the ABI which facilitates porting to other
architectures and speeds up the user-space fast path.
Here are benchmarks of various rseq use-cases.
Test hardware:
arm32: ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v7l) "Cubietruck", 2-core
x86-64: Intel E5-2630 v3@2.40GHz, 16-core, hyperthreading
The following benchmarks were all performed on a single thread.
* Per-CPU statistic counter increment
getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup
arm32: 344.0 31.4 11.0
x86-64: 15.3 2.0 7.7
* LTTng-UST: write event 32-bit header, 32-bit payload into tracer
per-cpu buffer
getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup
arm32: 2502.0 2250.0 1.1
x86-64: 117.4 98.0 1.2
* liburcu percpu: lock-unlock pair, dereference, read/compare word
getcpu+atomic (ns/op) rseq (ns/op) speedup
arm32: 751.0 128.5 5.8
x86-64: 53.4 28.6 1.9
* jemalloc memory allocator adapted to use rseq
Using rseq with per-cpu memory pools in jemalloc at Facebook (based on
rseq 2016 implementation):
The production workload response-time has 1-2% gain avg. latency, and
the P99 overall latency drops by 2-3%.
* Reading the current CPU number
Speeding up reading the current CPU number on which the caller thread is
running is done by keeping the current CPU number up do date within the
cpu_id field of the memory area registered by the thread. This is done
by making scheduler preemption set the TIF_NOTIFY_RESUME flag on the
current thread. Upon return to user-space, a notify-resume handler
updates the current CPU value within the registered user-space memory
area. User-space can then read the current CPU number directly from
memory.
Keeping the current cpu id in a memory area shared between kernel and
user-space is an improvement over current mechanisms available to read
the current CPU number, which has the following benefits over
alternative approaches:
- 35x speedup on ARM vs system call through glibc
- 20x speedup on x86 compared to calling glibc, which calls vdso
executing a "lsl" instruction,
- 14x speedup on x86 compared to inlined "lsl" instruction,
- Unlike vdso approaches, this cpu_id value can be read from an inline
assembly, which makes it a useful building block for restartable
sequences.
- The approach of reading the cpu id through memory mapping shared
between kernel and user-space is portable (e.g. ARM), which is not the
case for the lsl-based x86 vdso.
On x86, yet another possible approach would be to use the gs segment
selector to point to user-space per-cpu data. This approach performs
similarly to the cpu id cache, but it has two disadvantages: it is
not portable, and it is incompatible with existing applications already
using the gs segment selector for other purposes.
Benchmarking various approaches for reading the current CPU number:
ARMv7 Processor rev 4 (v7l)
Machine model: Cubietruck
- Baseline (empty loop): 8.4 ns
- Read CPU from rseq cpu_id: 16.7 ns
- Read CPU from rseq cpu_id (lazy register): 19.8 ns
- glibc 2.19-0ubuntu6.6 getcpu: 301.8 ns
- getcpu system call: 234.9 ns
x86-64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.40GHz:
- Baseline (empty loop): 0.8 ns
- Read CPU from rseq cpu_id: 0.8 ns
- Read CPU from rseq cpu_id (lazy register): 0.8 ns
- Read using gs segment selector: 0.8 ns
- "lsl" inline assembly: 13.0 ns
- glibc 2.19-0ubuntu6 getcpu: 16.6 ns
- getcpu system call: 53.9 ns
- Speed (benchmark taken on v8 of patchset)
Running 10 runs of hackbench -l 100000 seems to indicate, contrary to
expectations, that enabling CONFIG_RSEQ slightly accelerates the
scheduler:
Configuration: 2 sockets * 8-core Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v3 @
2.40GHz (directly on hardware, hyperthreading disabled in BIOS, energy
saving disabled in BIOS, turboboost disabled in BIOS, cpuidle.off=1
kernel parameter), with a Linux v4.6 defconfig+localyesconfig,
restartable sequences series applied.
* CONFIG_RSEQ=n
avg.: 41.37 s
std.dev.: 0.36 s
* CONFIG_RSEQ=y
avg.: 40.46 s
std.dev.: 0.33 s
- Size
On x86-64, between CONFIG_RSEQ=n/y, the text size increase of vmlinux is
567 bytes, and the data size increase of vmlinux is 5696 bytes.

Sometimes an in-progress call will stop responding on the fileserver when
the fileserver quietly cancels the call with an internally marked abort
(RX_CALL_DEAD), without sending an ABORT to the client.
This causes the client's call to eventually expire from lack of incoming
packets directed its way, which currently leads to it being cancelled
locally with ETIME. Note that it's not currently clear as to why this
happens as it's really hard to reproduce.
The rotation policy implement by kAFS, however, doesn't differentiate
between ETIME meaning we didn't get any response from the server and ETIME
meaning the call got cancelled mid-flow. The latter leads to an oops when
fetching data as the rotation partially resets the afs_read descriptor,
which can result in a cleared page pointer being dereferenced because that
page has already been filled.
Handle this by the following means:
(1) Set a flag on a call when we receive a packet for it.
(2) Store the highest packet serial number so far received for a call
(bearing in mind this may wrap).
(3) If, when the "not received anything recently" timeout expires on a
call, we've received at least one packet for a call and the connection
as a whole has received packets more recently than that call, then
cancel the call locally with ECONNRESET rather than ETIME.
This indicates that the call was definitely in progress on the server.
(4) In kAFS, if the rotation algorithm sees ECONNRESET rather than ETIME,
don't try the next server, but rather abort the call.
This avoids the oops as we don't try to reuse the afs_read struct.
Rather, as-yet ungotten pages will be reread at a later data.
Also:
(5) Add an rxrpc tracepoint to log detection of the call being reset.
Without this, I occasionally see an oops like the following:

This is additional to the
commit ea1627c20c ("tcp: minor optimizations around tcp_hdr() usage").
At this point, skb->data is same with tcp_hdr() as tcp header has not
been pulled yet. So use the less expensive one to get the tcp header.
Remove the third parameter of tcp_rcv_established() and put it into
the function body.
Furthermore, the local variables are listed as a reverse christmas tree :)

A zero size static array has special meaning in the ftrace infrastructure.
Trace events are for recording data in the trace buffers that is normally
difficult to obtain via probes or function tracing. There is no reason for
any trace event to declare a zero size static array.
If one does, BUILD_BUG_ON() will trigger and prevent the kernel from
compiling.

So add old_rfer and old_excl trace output to help distinguishing
different rescan instance.
(Different rescan instance should reset its qgroup->rfer to 0)

Since the following commit:
b91473ff6e ("sched,tracing: Update trace_sched_pi_setprio()")
the sched_pi_setprio trace point shows the "newprio" during a deboost:
|futex sched_pi_setprio: comm=futex_requeue_p pid"34 oldprio newprio=3D98
|futex sched_switch: prev_comm=futex_requeue_p prev_pid"34 prev_prio=120
This patch open codes __rt_effective_prio() in the tracepoint as the
'newprio' to get the old behaviour back / the correct priority:
|futex sched_pi_setprio: comm=futex_requeue_p pid"20 oldprio newprio=3D120
|futex sched_switch: prev_comm=futex_requeue_p prev_pid"20 prev_prio=120
Peter suggested to open code the new priority so people using tracehook
could get the deadline data out.

pull-request: bpf-next 2018-05-17
The following pull-request contains BPF updates for your *net-next* tree.
The main changes are:
1) Provide a new BPF helper for doing a FIB and neighbor lookup
in the kernel tables from an XDP or tc BPF program. The helper
provides a fast-path for forwarding packets. The API supports
IPv4, IPv6 and MPLS protocols, but currently IPv4 and IPv6 are
implemented in this initial work, from David (Ahern).
2) Just a tiny diff but huge feature enabled for nfp driver by
extending the BPF offload beyond a pure host processing offload.
Offloaded XDP programs are allowed to set the RX queue index and
thus opening the door for defining a fully programmable RSS/n-tuple
filter replacement. Once BPF decided on a queue already, the device
data-path will skip the conventional RSS processing completely,
from Jakub.
3) The original sockmap implementation was array based similar to
devmap. However unlike devmap where an ifindex has a 1:1 mapping
into the map there are use cases with sockets that need to be
referenced using longer keys. Hence, sockhash map is added reusing
as much of the sockmap code as possible, from John.
4) Introduce BTF ID. The ID is allocatd through an IDR similar as
with BPF maps and progs. It also makes BTF accessible to user
space via BPF_BTF_GET_FD_BY_ID and adds exposure of the BTF data
through BPF_OBJ_GET_INFO_BY_FD, from Martin.
5) Enable BPF stackmap with build_id also in NMI context. Due to the
up_read() of current->mm->mmap_sem build_id cannot be parsed.
This work defers the up_read() via a per-cpu irq_work so that
at least limited support can be enabled, from Song.
6) Various BPF JIT follow-up cleanups and fixups after the LD_ABS/LD_IND
JIT conversion as well as implementation of an optimized 32/64 bit
immediate load in the arm64 JIT that allows to reduce the number of
emitted instructions; in case of tested real-world programs they
were shrinking by three percent, from Daniel.
7) Add ifindex parameter to the libbpf loader in order to enable
BPF offload support. Right now only iproute2 can load offloaded
BPF and this will also enable libbpf for direct integration into
other applications, from David (Beckett).
8) Convert the plain text documentation under Documentation/bpf/ into
RST format since this is the appropriate standard the kernel is
moving to for all documentation. Also add an overview README.rst,
from Jesper.
9) Add __printf verification attribute to the bpf_verifier_vlog()
helper. Though it uses va_list we can still allow gcc to check
the format string, from Mathieu.
10) Fix a bash reference in the BPF selftest's Makefile. The '|& ...'
is a bash 4.0+ feature which is not guaranteed to be available
when calling out to shell, therefore use a more portable variant,
from Joe.
11) Fix a 64 bit division in xdp_umem_reg() by using div_u64()
instead of relying on the gcc built-in, from Björn.
12) Fix a sock hashmap kmalloc warning reported by syzbot when an
overly large key size is used in hashmap then causing overflows
in htab->elem_size. Reject bogus attr->key_size early in the
sock_hash_alloc(), from Yonghong.
13) Ensure in BPF selftests when urandom_read is being linked that
--build-id is always enabled so that test_stacktrace_build_id[_nmi]
won't be failing, from Alexei.
14) Add bitsperlong.h as well as errno.h uapi headers into the tools
header infrastructure which point to one of the arch specific
uapi headers. This was needed in order to fix a build error on
some systems for the BPF selftests, from Sirio.
15) Allow for short options to be used in the xdp_monitor BPF sample
code. And also a bpf.h tools uapi header sync in order to fix a
selftest build failure. Both from Prashant.
16) More formally clarify the meaning of ID in the direct packet access
section of the BPF documentation, from Wang.

a field event. This is increasingly important for the histogram trigger
work that is being extended.
While auditing trace events, I found that a couple of the xen events
were used as just marking that a function was called, by creating
a static array of size zero. This can play havoc with the tracing
features if these events are used, because a zero size of a static
array is denoted as a special nul terminated dynamic array (this is
what the trace_marker code uses). But since the xen events have no
size, they are not nul terminated, and unexpected results may occur.
As trace events were never intended on being a marker to denote
that a function was hit or not, especially since function tracing
and kprobes can trivially do the same, the best course of action is
to simply remove these events.

Doing an audit of trace events, I discovered two trace events in the xen
subsystem that use a hack to create zero data size trace events. This is not
what trace events are for. Trace events add memory footprint overhead, and
if all you need to do is see if a function is hit or not, simply make that
function noinline and use function tracer filtering.
Worse yet, the hack used was:
__array(char, x, 0)
Which creates a static string of zero in length. There's assumptions about
such constructs in ftrace that this is a dynamic string that is nul
terminated. This is not the case with these tracepoints and can cause
problems in various parts of ftrace.
Nuke the trace events!

Receive completion and Reply handling are done by a BOUND
workqueue, meaning they run on only one CPU.
Posting receives is currently done in the send_request path, which
on large systems is typically done on a different CPU than the one
handling Receive completions. This results in movement of
Receive-related cachelines between the sending and receiving CPUs.
More importantly, it means that currently Receives are posted while
the transport's write lock is held, which is unnecessary and costly.
Finally, allocation of Receive buffers is performed on-demand in
the Receive completion handler. This helps guarantee that they are
allocated on the same NUMA node as the CPU that handles Receive
completions.

tracepoints to bpf core were added as a way to provide introspection
to bpf programs and maps, but after some time it became clear that
this approach is inadequate, so prog_id, map_id and corresponding
get_next_id, get_fd_by_id, get_info_by_fd, prog_query APIs were
introduced and fully adopted by bpftool and other applications.
The tracepoints in bpf core started to rot and causing syzbot warnings:
WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 3008 at kernel/trace/trace_event_perf.c:274

Using initcall_t in the __field macro generates the following warning
with clang version 6.0:
include/trace/events/initcall.h:34:3: warning: ordered comparison of
function pointers ('initcall_t' (aka 'int (*)(void)') and 'initcall_t')
__field macro expands to __field_ext macro which does is_signed_type
check on the type argument. Since initcall_t is defined as a function
pointer, using it as the type in the __field macro, leads to an ordered
comparison of function pointer warning, inside the check. Using
__field_struct macro avoids the issue.

tcp_rcv_space_adjust is called every time data is copied to user space,
introducing a tcp tracepoint for which could show us when the packet is
copied to user.
When a tcp packet arrives, tcp_rcv_established() will be called and with
the existed tracepoint tcp_probe we could get the time when this packet
arrives.
Then this packet will be copied to user, and tcp_rcv_space_adjust will
be called and with this new introduced tracepoint we could get the time
when this packet is copied to user.
With these two tracepoints, we could figure out whether the user program
processes this packet immediately or there's latency.
Hence in the printk message, sk_cookie is printed as a key to relate
tcp_rcv_space_adjust with tcp_probe.
Maybe we could export sockfd in this new tracepoint as well, then we
could relate this new tracepoint with epoll/read/recv* tracepoints, and
finally that could show us the whole lifespan of this packet. But we
could also implement that with pid as these functions are executed in
process context.

used to trace various ufs transaction types- command, task-management

The trace-point format is generic and can be easily adapted to trace
other upius if needed.
Currently tracing ufs transaction of type 'device management', which
this patch introduce, cannot be obtained from any other trace.
Device management transactions are used for communication with the

There are several ways to send a ping, and with transport multi-
plexing, the exact rpc_xprt that is used is sometimes not known by

Locally edit the contents of an AFS directory upon a successful inode
operation that modifies that directory (such as mkdir, create and unlink)
so that we can avoid the current practice of re-downloading the directory
after each change.
This is viable provided that the directory version number we get back from
the modifying RPC op is exactly incremented by 1 from what we had
previously. The data in the directory contents is in a defined format that
we have to parse locally to perform lookups and readdir, so modifying isn't
a problem.
If the edit fails, we just clear the VALID flag on the directory and it
will be reloaded next time it is needed.

Pull fscache updates from David Howells:
"Three patches that fix some of AFS's usage of fscache:
(1) Need to invalidate the cache if a foreign data change is detected
on the server.
(2) Move the vnode ID uniquifier (equivalent to i_generation) from
the auxiliary data to the index key to prevent a race between
file delete and a subsequent file create seeing the same index
key.
(3) Need to retire cookies that correspond to files that we think got
deleted on the server.
Four patches to fix some things in fscache and cachefiles:
(4) Fix a couple of checker warnings.
(5) Correctly indicate to the end-of-operation callback whether an
operation completed or was cancelled.
(6) Add a check for multiple cookie relinquishment.
(7) Fix a path through the asynchronous write that doesn't wake up a
waiter for a page if the cache decides not to write that page,
but discards it instead.
A couple of patches to add tracepoints to fscache and cachefiles:
(8) Add tracepoints for cookie operators, object state machine
execution, cachefiles object management and cachefiles VFS
operations.
(9) Add tracepoints for fscache operation management and page
wrangling.
And then three development patches:
(10) Attach the index key and auxiliary data to the cookie, pass this
information through various fscache-netfs API functions and get
rid of the callbacks to the netfs to get it.
This means that the cache can get at this information, even if
the netfs goes away. It also means that the cache can be lazy in
updating the coherency data.
(11) Pass the object data size through various fscache-netfs API
rather than calling back to the netfs for it, and store the value
in the object.
This makes it easier to correctly resize the object, as the size
is updated on writes to the cache, rather than calling back out
to the netfs.
(12) Maintain a catalogue of allocated cookies. This makes it possible
to catch cookie collision up front rather than down in the bowels
of the cache being run from a service thread from the object
state machine.
This will also make it possible in the future to reconnect to a
cookie that's not gone dead yet because it's waiting for
finalisation of the storage and also make it possible to bring
cookies online if the cache is added after the cookie has been
obtained"

Maintain a catalogue of allocated cookies so that cookie collisions can be
handled properly. For the moment, this just involves printing a warning
and returning a NULL cookie to the caller of fscache_acquire_cookie(), but
in future it might make sense to wait for the old cookie to finish being
cleaned up.
This requires the cookie key to be stored attached to the cookie so that we
still have the key available if the netfs relinquishes the cookie. This is
done by an earlier patch.
The catalogue also renders redundant fscache_netfs_list (used for checking
for duplicates), so that can be removed.

Being able to trace the start and stop of initcalls is useful to see where
the timings are an issue. There is already an "initcall_debug" parameter,
but that can cause a large overhead itself, as the printing of the
information may take longer than the initcall functions.
Adding in a start and finish trace event around the initcall functions, as
well as a trace event that records the level of the initcalls, one can get a
much finer measurement of the times and interactions of the initcalls
themselves, as trace events are much lighter than printk()s.

Kswapd will not wakeup if per-zone watermarks are not failing or if too
many previous attempts at background reclaim have failed.
This can be true if there is a lot of free memory available. For high-
order allocations, kswapd is responsible for waking up kcompactd for
background compaction. If the zone is not below its watermarks or
reclaim has recently failed (lots of free memory, nothing left to
reclaim), kcompactd does not get woken up.
When __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is not allowed, allow kcompactd to still be
woken up even if kswapd will not reclaim. This allows high-order
allocations, such as thp, to still trigger background compaction even
when the zone has an abundance of free memory.

MR_CONTIG_RANGE which will appropriately reflect the reason code in both
these cases.

Currently, trace_svc_process has two call sites:
1. Just after a call to svc_send. svc_send already invokes
trace_svc_send with the same arguments just before returning
2. Just before a call to svc_drop. svc_drop already invokes
trace_svc_drop with the same arguments just after it is called
Therefore trace_svc_process does not provide any additional
information not already provided by these other trace points.
However, it would be useful to record the incoming RPC procedure.
So reuse trace_svc_process for this purpose.

TP_printk defines a format string that is passed to user space for
converting raw trace event records to something human-readable.
My user space's printf (Oracle Linux 7), however, does not have a
%pI format specifier. The result is that what is supposed to be an
IP address in the output of "trace-cmd report" is just a string that
says the field couldn't be displayed.
To fix this, adopt the same approach as the client: maintain a pre-
formated presentation address for occasions when %pI is not
available.
The location of the trace_svc_send trace point is adjusted so that
rqst->rq_xprt is not NULL when the trace event is recorded.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of value in calling trace_svc_recv
in the failing case.
1. There are two very common cases: one is the transport is not
ready, and the other is shutdown. Neither is terribly interesting.
2. The trace record for the failing case contains nothing but
the status code.
Therefore the trace point call site in the error exit is removed.
Since the trace point is now recording a length instead of a
status, rename the status field and remove the case that records a
zero XID.

Reduce the amount of noise generated by trace_svc_xprt_dequeue by
moving it to the end of svc_get_next_xprt. This generates exactly
one trace event when a ready xprt is found, rather than spurious
events when there is no work to do. The empty events contain no
information that can't be obtained simply by tracing function calls
to svc_xprt_dequeue.
A small additional benefit is simplification of the svc_xprt_event
trace class, which no longer has to handle the case when the @xprt
parameter is NULL.

This removes the entire architecture code for blackfin, cris, frv, m32r,
metag, mn10300, score, and tile, including the associated device drivers.
I have been working with the (former) maintainers for each one to ensure
that my interpretation was right and the code is definitely unused in
mainline kernels. Many had fond memories of working on the respective
ports to start with and getting them included in upstream, but also saw
no point in keeping the port alive without any users.
In the end, it seems that while the eight architectures are extremely
different, they all suffered the same fate: There was one company
in charge of an SoC line, a CPU microarchitecture and a software
ecosystem, which was more costly than licensing newer off-the-shelf
CPU cores from a third party (typically ARM, MIPS, or RISC-V). It seems
that all the SoC product lines are still around, but have not used the
custom CPU architectures for several years at this point. In contrast,
CPU instruction sets that remain popular and have actively maintained
kernel ports tend to all be used across multiple licensees.
The removal came out of a discussion that is now documented at
https://lwn.net/Articles/748074/. Unlike the original plans, I'm not
marking any ports as deprecated but remove them all at once after I made
sure that they are all unused. Some architectures (notably tile, mn10300,
and blackfin) are still being shipped in products with old kernels,
but those products will never be updated to newer kernel releases.
After this series, we still have a few architectures without mainline
gcc support:
- unicore32 and hexagon both have very outdated gcc releases, but the
maintainers promised to work on providing something newer. At least
in case of hexagon, this will only be llvm, not gcc.
- openrisc, risc-v and nds32 are still in the process of finishing their
support or getting it added to mainline gcc in the first place.
They all have patched gcc-7.3 ports that work to some degree, but
complete upstream support won't happen before gcc-8.1. Csky posted
their first kernel patch set last week, their situation will be similar.

pull-request: bpf-next 2018-03-31
The following pull-request contains BPF updates for your *net-next* tree.
The main changes are:
1) Add raw BPF tracepoint API in order to have a BPF program type that
can access kernel internal arguments of the tracepoints in their
raw form similar to kprobes based BPF programs. This infrastructure
also adds a new BPF_RAW_TRACEPOINT_OPEN command to BPF syscall which
returns an anon-inode backed fd for the tracepoint object that allows
for automatic detach of the BPF program resp. unregistering of the
tracepoint probe on fd release, from Alexei.
2) Add new BPF cgroup hooks at bind() and connect() entry in order to
allow BPF programs to reject, inspect or modify user space passed
struct sockaddr, and as well a hook at post bind time once the port
has been allocated. They are used in FB's container management engine
for implementing policy, replacing fragile LD_PRELOAD wrapper
intercepting bind() and connect() calls that only works in limited
scenarios like glibc based apps but not for other runtimes in
containerized applications, from Andrey.
3) BPF_F_INGRESS flag support has been added to sockmap programs for
their redirect helper call bringing it in line with cls_bpf based
programs. Support is added for both variants of sockmap programs,
meaning for tx ULP hooks as well as recv skb hooks, from John.
4) Various improvements on BPF side for the nfp driver, besides others
this work adds BPF map update and delete helper call support from
the datapath, JITing of 32 and 64 bit XADD instructions as well as
offload support of bpf_get_prandom_u32() call. Initial implementation
of nfp packet cache has been tackled that optimizes memory access
(see merge commit for further details), from Jakub and Jiong.
5) Removal of struct bpf_verifier_env argument from the print_bpf_insn()
API has been done in order to prepare to use print_bpf_insn() soon
out of perf tool directly. This makes the print_bpf_insn() API more
generic and pushes the env into private data. bpftool is adjusted
as well with the print_bpf_insn() argument removal, from Jiri.
6) Couple of cleanups and prep work for the upcoming BTF (BPF Type
Format). The latter will reuse the current BPF verifier log as
well, thus bpf_verifier_log() is further generalized, from Martin.
7) For bpf_getsockopt() and bpf_setsockopt() helpers, IPv4 IP_TOS read
and write support has been added in similar fashion to existing
IPv6 IPV6_TCLASS socket option we already have, from Nikita.
8) Fixes in recent sockmap scatterlist API usage, which did not use
sg_init_table() for initialization thus triggering a BUG_ON() in
scatterlist API when CONFIG_DEBUG_SG was enabled. This adds and
uses a small helper sg_init_marker() to properly handle the affected
cases, from Prashant.
9) Let the BPF core follow IDR code convention and therefore use the
idr_preload() and idr_preload_end() helpers, which would also help
idr_alloc_cyclic() under GFP_ATOMIC to better succeed under memory
pressure, from Shaohua.
10) Last but not least, a spelling fix in an error message for the
BPF cookie UID helper under BPF sample code, from Colin.

Now trace_qgroup_meta_reserve() will have extra type parameter.
And introduce two new trace events:
1) trace_qgroup_meta_free_all_pertrans()

2) trace_qgroup_meta_convert()

Btrfs uses 2 different methods to reseve metadata qgroup space.
1) Reserve at btrfs_start_transaction() time
This is quite straightforward, caller will use the trans handler
allocated to modify b-trees.
In this case, reserved metadata should be kept until qgroup numbers
are updated.
2) Reserve by using block_rsv first, and later btrfs_join_transaction()
This is more complicated, caller will reserve space using block_rsv
first, and then later call btrfs_join_transaction() to get a trans
handle.
In this case, before we modify trees, the reserved space can be
modified on demand, and after btrfs_join_transaction(), such reserved
space should also be kept until qgroup numbers are updated.
Since these two types behave differently, split the original "META"
reservation type into 2 sub-types:
META_PERTRANS:
For above case 1)
META_PREALLOC:
For reservations that happened before btrfs_join_transaction() of
case 2)
NOTE: This patch will only convert existing qgroup meta reservation
callers according to its situation, not ensuring all callers are at
correct timing.
Such fix will be added in later patches.

Introduce BPF_PROG_TYPE_RAW_TRACEPOINT bpf program type to access
kernel internal arguments of the tracepoints in their raw form.
>From bpf program point of view the access to the arguments look like:
struct bpf_raw_tracepoint_args {
__u64 args[0];
};
int bpf_prog(struct bpf_raw_tracepoint_args *ctx)
{
// program can read args[N] where N depends on tracepoint
// and statically verified at program load+attach time
}
kprobe+bpf infrastructure allows programs access function arguments.
This feature allows programs access raw tracepoint arguments.
Similar to proposed 'dynamic ftrace events' there are no abi guarantees
to what the tracepoints arguments are and what their meaning is.
The program needs to type cast args properly and use bpf_probe_read()
helper to access struct fields when argument is a pointer.
For every tracepoint __bpf_trace_##call function is prepared.
In assembler it looks like:
(gdb) disassemble __bpf_trace_xdp_exception
Dump of assembler code for function __bpf_trace_xdp_exception:
0xffffffff81132080 <+0>: mov %ecx,%ecx
0xffffffff81132082 <+2>: jmpq 0xffffffff811231f0 <bpf_trace_run3>
where
TRACE_EVENT(xdp_exception,
TP_PROTO(const struct net_device *dev,
const struct bpf_prog *xdp, u32 act),
The above assembler snippet is casting 32-bit 'act' field into 'u64'
to pass into bpf_trace_run3(), while 'dev' and 'xdp' args are passed as-is.
All of ~500 of __bpf_trace_*() functions are only 5-10 byte long
and in total this approach adds 7k bytes to .text.
This approach gives the lowest possible overhead
while calling trace_xdp_exception() from kernel C code and
transitioning into bpf land.
Since tracepoint+bpf are used at speeds of 1M+ events per second
this is valuable optimization.
The new BPF_RAW_TRACEPOINT_OPEN sys_bpf command is introduced
that returns anon_inode FD of 'bpf-raw-tracepoint' object.
The user space looks like:
// load bpf prog with BPF_PROG_TYPE_RAW_TRACEPOINT type
prog_fd = bpf_prog_load(...);
// receive anon_inode fd for given bpf_raw_tracepoint with prog attached
raw_tp_fd = bpf_raw_tracepoint_open("xdp_exception", prog_fd);
Ctrl-C of tracing daemon or cmdline tool that uses this feature
will automatically detach bpf program, unload it and
unregister tracepoint probe.
On the kernel side the __bpf_raw_tp_map section of pointers to
tracepoint definition and to __bpf_trace_*() probe function is used
to find a tracepoint with "xdp_exception" name and
corresponding __bpf_trace_xdp_exception() probe function
which are passed to tracepoint_probe_register() to connect probe
with tracepoint.
Addition of bpf_raw_tracepoint doesn't interfere with ftrace and perf
tracepoint mechanisms. perf_event_open() can be used in parallel
on the same tracepoint.
Multiple bpf_raw_tracepoint_open("xdp_exception", prog_fd) are permitted.
Each with its own bpf program. The kernel will execute
all tracepoint probes and all attached bpf programs.
In the future bpf_raw_tracepoints can be extended with
query/introspection logic.

- fix trace_hfi1_ctxt_info() to pass large struct by reference instead of by value
- convert 'type array[]' tracepoint arguments into 'type *array',
since compiler will warn that sizeof('type array[]') == sizeof('type *array')
and later should be used instead
The CAST_TO_U64 macro in the later patch will enforce that tracepoint
arguments can only be integers, pointers, or less than 8 byte structures.
Larger structures should be passed by reference.

In rxrpc and afs, use the debug_ids that are monotonically allocated to
various objects as they're allocated rather than pointers as kernel
pointers are now hashed making them less useful. Further, the debug ids
aren't reused anywhere nearly as quickly.
In addition, allow kernel services that use rxrpc, such as afs, to take
numbers from the rxrpc counter, assign them to their own call struct and
pass them in to rxrpc for both client and service calls so that the trace
lines for each will have the same ID tag.

Here is the big pull request for char/misc drivers for 4.16-rc1.
There's a lot of stuff in here. Three new driver subsystems were added
for various types of hardware busses:
- siox
- slimbus
- soundwire
as well as a new vboxguest subsystem for the VirtualBox hypervisor
drivers.
There's also big updates from the FPGA subsystem, lots of Android binder
fixes, the usual handful of hyper-v updates, and lots of other smaller
driver updates.
All of these have been in linux-next for a long time, with no reported
issues.

Previously we were using the ratio of the number of lru pages scanned to
the number of eligible lru pages to determine the number of slab objects
to scan. The problem with this is that these two things have nothing to
do with each other, so in slab heavy work loads where there is little to
no page cache we can end up with the pages scanned being a very low
number. This means that we reclaim next to no slab pages and waste a
lot of time reclaiming small amounts of space.
Consider the following scenario, where we have the following values and
the rest of the memory usage is in slab
Active: 58840 kB
Inactive: 46860 kB
Every time we do a get_scan_count() we do this
scan = size >> sc->priority
where sc->priority starts at DEF_PRIORITY, which is 12. The first loop
through reclaim would result in a scan target of 2 pages to 11715 total
inactive pages, and 3 pages to 14710 total active pages. This is a
really really small target for a system that is entirely slab pages.
And this is super optimistic, this assumes we even get to scan these
pages. We don't increment sc->nr_scanned unless we 1) isolate the page,
which assumes it's not in use, and 2) can lock the page. Under pressure
these numbers could probably go down, I'm sure there's some random pages
from daemons that aren't actually in use, so the targets get even
smaller.
Instead use sc->priority in the same way we use it to determine scan
amounts for the lru's. This generally equates to pages. Consider the
following
slab_pages = (nr_objects * object_size) / PAGE_SIZE
What we would like to do is
scan = slab_pages >> sc->priority
but we don't know the number of slab pages each shrinker controls, only
the objects. However say that theoretically we knew how many pages a
shrinker controlled, we'd still have to convert this to objects, which
would look like the following
scan = shrinker_pages >> sc->priority
scan_objects = (PAGE_SIZE / object_size) * scan
or written another way
scan_objects = (shrinker_pages >> sc->priority) *
(PAGE_SIZE / object_size)
which can thus be written
scan_objects = ((shrinker_pages * PAGE_SIZE) / object_size) >>
sc->priority
which is just
scan_objects = nr_objects >> sc->priority
We don't need to know exactly how many pages each shrinker represents,
it's objects are all the information we need. Making this change allows
us to place an appropriate amount of pressure on the shrinker pools for
their relative size.

- A rather large rework of the hrtimer infrastructure which
introduces softirq based hrtimers to replace the spread of
hrtimer/tasklet combos which force the actual callback execution

initial implementation which you cursed at 10 years ago rightfully.
The softirq based timers have their own queues and there is no

Commit 9036c10208 ("Btrfs: update hole handling v2") added the
FLAG_VACANCY to denote holes, however there was already a consistent way
of flagging extents which represent hole - ->block_start =
EXTENT_MAP_HOLE. And also the only place where this flag is checked is
in the fiemap code, but the block_start value is also checked and every
other place in the filesystem detects holes by using block_start
value's. So remove the extra flag. This survived a full xfstest run.

Currently hrtimer callback functions are always executed in hard interrupt
context. Users of hrtimers, which need their timer function to be executed
in soft interrupt context, make use of tasklets to get the proper context.
Add additional hrtimer clock bases for timers which must expire in softirq
context, so the detour via the tasklet can be avoided. This is also
required for RT, where the majority of hrtimer is moved into softirq
hrtimer context.
The selection of the expiry mode happens via a mode bit. Introduce
HRTIMER_MODE_SOFT and the matching combinations with the ABS/REL/PINNED
bits and update the decoding of hrtimer_mode in tracepoints.

So far only CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_REALTIME were taken into account as
well as HRTIMER_MODE_ABS/REL in the hrtimer_init tracepoint. The query for
detecting the ABS or REL timer modes is not valid anymore, it got broken
by the introduction of HRTIMER_MODE_PINNED.
HRTIMER_MODE_PINNED is not evaluated in the hrtimer_init() call, but for the
sake of completeness print all given modes.

Add SCTP ACK tracking trace event to trace the changes of SCTP
association state in response to incoming packets.
It is used for debugging SCTP congestion control algorithms,
and will replace sctp_probe module.
Note that this event a bit tricky. Since this consists of 2
events (sctp_probe and sctp_probe_path) so you have to enable
both events as below.
# cd /sys/kernel/debug/tracing
# echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe/enable
# echo 1 > events/sctp/sctp_probe_path/enable
Or, you can enable all the events under sctp.
# echo 1 > events/sctp/enable
Since sctp_probe_path event is always invoked from sctp_probe
event, you can not see any output if you only enable
sctp_probe_path.

Using a preprocessor directive to check for CONFIG_IPV6 in the middle of
a DECLARE_EVENT_CLASS macro's arg list causes sparse to report a series
of errors:
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:68:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:75:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:144:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:151:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:216:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:223:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:274:1: error: directive in argument list
./include/trace/events/tcp.h:281:1: error: directive in argument list
Once sparse finds an error, it stops printing warnings for the file it
is checking. This masks any sparse warnings that would normally be
reported for the core TCP code.
Instead, handle the preprocessor conditionals in a couple of auxiliary
macros. This also has the benefit of reducing duplicate code.

As sk_state is a common field for struct sock, so the state
transition tracepoint should not be a TCP specific feature.
Currently it traces all AF_INET state transition, so I rename this
tracepoint to inet_sock_set_state tracepoint with some minor changes and move it
into trace/events/sock.h.
We dont need to create a file named trace/events/inet_sock.h for this one single
tracepoint.
Two helpers are introduced to trace sk_state transition
- void inet_sk_state_store(struct sock *sk, int newstate);
- void inet_sk_set_state(struct sock *sk, int state);
As trace header should not be included in other header files,
so they are defined in sock.c.
The protocol such as SCTP maybe compiled as a ko, hence export
inet_sk_set_state().

The TCP trace events (specifically tcp_set_state), maps emums to symbol
names via __print_symbolic(). But this only works for reading trace events
from the tracefs trace files. If perf or trace-cmd were to record these
events, the event format file does not convert the enum names into numbers,
and you get something like:
__print_symbolic(REC->oldstate,
{ TCP_ESTABLISHED, "TCP_ESTABLISHED" },
{ TCP_SYN_SENT, "TCP_SYN_SENT" },
{ TCP_SYN_RECV, "TCP_SYN_RECV" },
{ TCP_FIN_WAIT1, "TCP_FIN_WAIT1" },
{ TCP_FIN_WAIT2, "TCP_FIN_WAIT2" },
{ TCP_TIME_WAIT, "TCP_TIME_WAIT" },
{ TCP_CLOSE, "TCP_CLOSE" },
{ TCP_CLOSE_WAIT, "TCP_CLOSE_WAIT" },
{ TCP_LAST_ACK, "TCP_LAST_ACK" },
{ TCP_LISTEN, "TCP_LISTEN" },
{ TCP_CLOSING, "TCP_CLOSING" },
{ TCP_NEW_SYN_RECV, "TCP_NEW_SYN_RECV" })
Where trace-cmd and perf do not know the values of those enums.
Use the TRACE_DEFINE_ENUM() macros that will have the trace events convert
the enum strings into their values at system boot. This will allow perf and
trace-cmd to see actual numbers and not enums:
__print_symbolic(REC->oldstate,
{ 1, "TCP_ESTABLISHED" },
{ 2, "TCP_SYN_SENT" },
{ 3, "TCP_SYN_RECV" },
{ 4, "TCP_FIN_WAIT1" },
{ 5, "TCP_FIN_WAIT2" },
{ 6, "TCP_TIME_WAIT" },
{ 7, "TCP_CLOSE" },
{ 8, "TCP_CLOSE_WAIT" },
{ 9, "TCP_LAST_ACK" },
{ 10, "TCP_LISTEN" },
{ 11, "TCP_CLOSING" },
{ 12, "TCP_NEW_SYN_RECV" })

The path of patched vmmcall will patch 3 bytes opcode 0F 01 C1(vmcall)
to the guest memory, however, write_mmio tracepoint always prints 8 bytes
through *(u64 *)val since kvm splits the mmio access into 8 bytes. This
leaks 5 bytes from the kernel stack (CVE-2017-17741). This patch fixes
it by just accessing the bytes which we operate on.

Before this patch the bridge used a fixed 256 element hash table which
was fine for small use cases (in my tests it starts to degrade
above 1000 entries), but it wasn't enough for medium or large
scale deployments. Modern setups have thousands of participants in a
single bridge, even only enabling vlans and adding a few thousand vlan
entries will cause a few thousand fdbs to be automatically inserted per
participating port. So we need to scale the fdb table considerably to
cope with modern workloads, and this patch converts it to use a
rhashtable for its operations thus improving the bridge scalability.
Tests show the following results (10 runs each), at up to 1000 entries
rhashtable is ~3% slower, at 2000 rhashtable is 30% faster, at 3000 it
is 2 times faster and at 30000 it is 50 times faster.
Obviously this happens because of the properties of the two constructs
and is expected, rhashtable keeps pretty much a constant time even with
10000000 entries (tested), while the fixed hash table struggles
considerably even above 10000.
As a side effect this also reduces the net_bridge struct size from 3248
bytes to 1344 bytes. Also note that the key struct is 8 bytes.

The trace event rcu_nocb_wake is only used when CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU is
defined. But the trace event is defined regardless. As defined trace
events take up memory, it is a waste to have it defined when not used.
Surround the trace event with an #ifdef to have it only defined when it
is used.

We get a build error in the irqsoff tracer in some configurations:
kernel/trace/trace_irqsoff.c: In function 'trace_preempt_on':
kernel/trace/trace_irqsoff.c:855:2: error: implicit declaration of function 'trace_preempt_enable_rcuidle'; did you mean 'trace_irq_enable_rcuidle'? [-Werror=implicit-function-declaration]
trace_preempt_enable_rcuidle(a0, a1);
The problem is that trace_preempt_enable_rcuidle() has different
definition based on multiple Kconfig symbols, but not all combinations
have a valid definition.
This changes the conditions so that we always get exactly one
definition of each of the four tracing macros. I have not tried
to verify that these definitions are sensible, but now we
can build all randconfig combinations again.

pull-request: bpf 2017-12-02
The following pull-request contains BPF updates for your *net* tree.
The main changes are:
1) Fix a compilation warning in xdp redirect tracepoint due to
missing bpf.h include that pulls in struct bpf_map, from Xie.
2) Limit the maximum number of attachable BPF progs for a given
perf event as long as uabi is not frozen yet. The hard upper
limit is now 64 and therefore the same as with BPF multi-prog
for cgroups. Also add related error checking for the sample
BPF loader when enabling and attaching to the perf event, from
Yonghong.
3) Specifically set the RLIMIT_MEMLOCK for the test_verifier_log
case, so that the test case can always pass and not fail in
some environments due to too low default limit, also from
Yonghong.
4) Fix up a missing license header comment for kernel/bpf/offload.c,
from Jakub.
5) Several fixes for bpftool, among others a crash on incorrect
arguments when json output is used, error message handling
fixes on unknown options and proper destruction of json writer
for some exit cases, all from Quentin.

Commit c0f4dfd4f9 ("rcu: Make RCU_FAST_NO_HZ take advantage of

this is a waste of space. Remove the obsolete event.

The code that checks for non-idle non-nohz_idle-usermode tasks invoking
rcu_eqs_enter() and rcu_eqs_exit() prints a considerable quantity of
helpful information. However, these checks fire rarely, so the extra
complexity is no longer worth it. This commit therefore replaces this

Because the ->dynticks_nesting field now only contains the process-based
