12281c8dda video: fb_defio: preserve user fb_ops
Modifying fb_ops directly to override fb_mmap with fb_deferred_io_mmap
and then resetting it to NULL afterwards causes problems all over the
place. First, it prevents making the fbops member of struct fb_info a
const pointer, which means we can't make struct fb_ops const
anywhere. Second, a few places have to go out of their way to restore
the original fb_mmap pointer that gets reset to NULL.

Since the only user of the fbops->fb_mmap hook is fb_mmap() in fbmem.c,
call fb_deferred_io_mmap() directly when deferred IO is enabled, and
avoid modifying fb_ops altogether.

Simply use info->fbdefio to determine whether deferred IO should be used
or not. This should be accurate enough for all use cases, although
perhaps not pedantically correct.

0da522107e compat_ioctl: remove most of fs/compat_ioctl.c
As part of the cleanup of some remaining y2038 issues, I came to
 fs/compat_ioctl.c, which still has a couple of commands that need support
 for time64_t.
 
 In completely unrelated work, I spent time on cleaning up parts of this
 file in the past, moving things out into drivers instead.
 
 After Al Viro reviewed an earlier version of this series and did a lot
 more of that cleanup, I decided to try to completely eliminate the rest
 of it and move it all into drivers.
 
 This series incorporates some of Al's work and many patches of my own,
 but in the end stops short of actually removing the last part, which is
 the scsi ioctl handlers. I have patches for those as well, but they need
 more testing or possibly a rewrite.

d21987d709 video: hyperv: hyperv_fb: Support deferred IO for Hyper-V frame buffer driver
Without deferred IO support, hyperv_fb driver informs the host to refresh
the entire guest frame buffer at fixed rate, e.g. at 20Hz, no matter there
is screen update or not. This patch supports deferred IO for screens in
graphics mode and also enables the frame buffer on-demand refresh. The
highest refresh rate is still set at 20Hz.

Currently Hyper-V only takes a physical address from guest as the starting
address of frame buffer. This implies the guest must allocate contiguous
physical memory for frame buffer. In addition, Hyper-V Gen 2 VMs only
accept address from MMIO region as frame buffer address. Due to these
limitations on Hyper-V host, we keep a shadow copy of frame buffer
in the guest. This means one more copy of the dirty rectangle inside
guest when doing the on-demand refresh. This can be optimized in the
future with help from host. For now the host performance gain from deferred
IO outweighs the shadow copy impact in the guest.

Beginning from Windows 10 RS5+, VM screen resolution is obtained from host.
The "video=hyperv_fb" boot time option is not needed, but still can be
used to overwrite what the host specifies. The VM resolution on the host
could be set by executing the powershell "set-vmvideo" command.

Notice that radeon_set_suspend(), which is the only caller of

cares about the pci_platform_power_transition() invoked by it,

call pci_platform_power_transition() directly and make
__pci_complete_power_transition() static.

706dc68102 backlight: gpio: Explicitly set the direction of the GPIO
The GPIO backlight driver currently requests the line 'as is', without
acively setting its direction. This can lead to problems: if the line
is in input mode by default, we won't be able to drive it later when
updating the status and also reading its initial value doesn't make
sense for backlight setting.

Request the line 'as is' initially, so that we can read its value
without affecting it but then change the direction to output explicitly
when setting the initial brightness.

Also: check the current direction and only read the value if it's output.

CONFIG_OPTIMIZE_INLINING forcibly").

The auto string detection algorithm checks if the current WLED
sink configuration is valid. It tries enabling every sink and
checks if the OVP fault is observed. Based on this information
it detects and enables the valid sink configuration.
Auto calibration will be triggered when the OVP fault interrupts
are seen frequently thereby it tries to fix the sink configuration.

The auto-detection also kicks in when the connected LED string
of the display-backlight malfunctions (because of damage) and
requires the damaged string to be turned off to prevent the
complete panel and/or board from being damaged.

ca58b37034 backlight: pwm_bl: Switch to power-of-2 base for fixed-point math
Using a power-of-2 instead of power-of-10 base makes the computations
much cheaper. 2^16 is safe; retval never becomes more than 2^48 +
2^32/2. On a 32 bit platform, the very expensive 64/32 division at the
end of cie1931() instead becomes essentially free (a shift by 32 is
just a register rename).

407feae1ca backlight: pwm_bl: Drop use of int_pow()
For a fixed small exponent of 3, it is more efficient to simply use
two explicit multiplications rather than calling the int_pow() library
function: Aside from the function call overhead, its implementation
using repeated squaring means it ends up doing four 64x64
multiplications.

efdf690e15 backlight: pwm_bl: Fix cie1913 comments and constant
The "break-even" point for the two formulas is L==8, which is also
what the code actually implements. [Incidentally, at that point one
has Y=0.008856, not 0.08856].

Moreover, all the sources I can find say the linear factor is 903.3
rather than 902.3, which makes sense since then the formulas agree at
L==8, both yielding the 0.008856 figure to four significant digits.

01bb25156d video/logo: do not generate unneeded logo C files
Currently, all the logo C files are generated irrespective of the
CONFIG options. Adding them to extra-y is wrong. What we need to do
here is to add them to 'targets' so that if_changed works properly.

Files listed in 'targets' are cleaned, so clean-files is unneeded.

For now just enable it in the probe function to allow I2C
access. Disabling also means resetting the register values
to default and according to the datasheet does not give
power savings.

 platform patches being added to the tree, and then after much discussion
 and review and a day-long in-person meeting, they were decided to be
 reverted and a new set of patches is currently being reviewed on the
 mailing list.
 
 Other than that churn, there are two "persistent" branches in here that
 other trees will be pulling in as well during the merge window.  One
 branch to add support for drivers to have the driver core automatically
 add sysfs attribute files when a driver is bound to a device so that the
 driver doesn't have to manually do it (and then clean it up, as it
 always gets it wrong).
 
 There's another branch in here for generic lookup helpers for the driver
 core that lots of busses are starting to use.  That's the majority of
 the non-driver-core changes in this patch series.
 
 There's also some on-going debugfs file creation cleanup that has been
 slowly happening over the past few releases, with the goal to hopefully
 get that done sometime next year.

Check if a brightness curve specified in the device tree is linear or
not and set the corresponding property accordingly. This makes the
scale type available to userspace via the 'scale' sysfs attribute.

To determine if a curve is linear it is compared to a interpolated linear
curve between min and max brightness. The curve is considered linear if
no value deviates more than +/-5% of ${brightness_range} from their
interpolated value.

d55c028f8b backlight: Expose brightness curve type through sysfs
Backlight brightness curves can have different shapes. The two main
types are linear and non-linear curves. The human eye doesn't
perceive linearly increasing/decreasing brightness as linear (see
also 88ba95bedb "backlight: pwm_bl: Compute brightness of LED
linearly to human eye"), hence many backlights use non-linear (often
logarithmic) brightness curves. The type of curve currently is opaque
to userspace, so userspace often uses more or less reliable heuristics
(like the number of brightness levels) to decide whether to treat a
backlight device as linear or non-linear.

Export the type of the brightness curve via the new sysfs attribute
'scale'. The value of the attribute can be 'linear', 'non-linear' or
'unknown'. For devices that don't provide information about the scale
of their brightness curve the value of the 'scale' attribute is 'unknown'.

ec665b756e backlight: gpio-backlight: Correct initial power state handling
The default-on property - or the def_value via legacy pdata) should be
handled as:
if it is 1, the backlight must be enabled (kept enabled)
if it is 0, the backlight must be disabled (kept disabled)

This only works for the case when default-on is set. If it is not set then
the brightness of the backlight is set to 0. Now if the backlight is
enabled by external driver (graphics) the backlight will stay disabled since
the brightness is configured as 0. The backlight will not turn on.

In order to minimize screen flickering during device boot:

The initial brightness should be set to 1.

If booted in non DT mode or no phandle link to the backlight node:
follow the def_value/default-on to select UNBLANK or POWERDOWN

If in DT boot we have phandle link then leave the GPIO in a state which the
bootloader left it and let the user of the backlight to configure it
further.

06b1f4b9f2 video: fbdev/mmp/core: Use struct_size() in kzalloc()
One of the more common cases of allocation size calculations is finding
the size of a structure that has a zero-sized array at the end, along
with memory for some number of elements for that array. For example:

struct mmp_path {
	...
        struct mmp_overlay overlays[0];
};

size = sizeof(struct mmp_path) + count * sizeof(struct mmp_overlay);
instance = kzalloc(size, GFP_KERNEL)

Instead of leaving these open-coded and prone to type mistakes, we can
now use the new struct_size() helper:

instance = kzalloc(struct_size(instance, overlays, count), GFP_KERNEL)

Notice that, in this case, variable size is not necessary, hence it
is removed.

This code was detected with the help of Coccinelle.

51677dfcc1 efifb: BGRT: Improve efifb_bgrt_sanity_check
For various reasons, at least with x86 EFI firmwares, the xoffset and
yoffset in the BGRT info are not always reliable.

Extensive testing has shown that when the info is correct, the
BGRT image is always exactly centered horizontally (the yoffset variable
is more variable and not always predictable).

This commit simplifies / improves the bgrt_sanity_check to simply
check that the BGRT image is exactly centered horizontally and skips
(re)drawing it when it is not.

This fixes the BGRT image sometimes being drawn in the wrong place.

1e938755fa video: omapfb2: Make standard and custom panel drivers mutually exclusive
Standard DRM panel drivers for several panels used by omapfb2 are now
available. Their module name clashes with the modules from
drivers/video/fbdev/omap2/omapfb/displays, part of the deprecated omapfb2
fbdev driver. As omapfb2 can only be compiled when the omapdrm driver is
disabled, and the DRM panel drivers are useless in that case, make the
omapfb2 panels depend on the standard DRM panels being disabled to fix
the name clash.
