5ecd9d403a mm, page_alloc: wakeup kcompactd even if kswapd cannot free more memory
Kswapd will not wakeup if per-zone watermarks are not failing or if too
many previous attempts at background reclaim have failed.

This can be true if there is a lot of free memory available. For high-
order allocations, kswapd is responsible for waking up kcompactd for
background compaction. If the zone is not below its watermarks or
reclaim has recently failed (lots of free memory, nothing left to
reclaim), kcompactd does not get woken up.

When __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is not allowed, allow kcompactd to still be
woken up even if kswapd will not reclaim. This allows high-order
allocations, such as thp, to still trigger background compaction even
when the zone has an abundance of free memory.

680014d6d1 Merge branch 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull time(r) updates from Thomas Gleixner:
"A small set of updates for timers and timekeeping:

   - The most interesting change is the consolidation of clock MONOTONIC
     and clock BOOTTIME.

Clock MONOTONIC behaves now exactly like clock BOOTTIME and does
not longer ignore the time spent in suspend. A new clock
MONOTONIC_ACTIVE is provived which behaves like clock MONOTONIC in
kernels before this change. This allows applications to
programmatically check for the clock MONOTONIC behaviour.

As discussed in the review thread, this has the potential of
breaking user space and we might have to revert this. Knock on wood
that we can avoid that exercise.

   - Updates to the NTP mechanism to improve accuracy

   - A new kernel internal data structure to aid the ongoing Y2038 work.

   - Cleanups and simplifications of the clocksource code.

   - Make the alarmtimer code play nicely with debugobjects"

* 'timers-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip:
alarmtimer: Init nanosleep alarm timer on stack
  y2038: Introduce struct __kernel_old_timeval
tracing: Unify the "boot" and "mono" tracing clocks
hrtimer: Unify MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME clock behavior

bb2407a721 There's been a fair amount of activity in Documentation/ this time around:

  - The trace documentation has been converted to RST by Changbin Du

  - I thrashed up kernel-doc to deal with a parsing issue and to try to make

2bf16b7a73 Char/Misc patches for 4.15-rc1
Here is the big set of char/misc and other driver subsystem patches for
 4.15-rc1.

There are small changes all over here, hyperv driver updates, pcmcia
driver updates, w1 driver updats, vme driver updates, nvmem driver
updates, and lots of other little one-off driver updates as well. The
 shortlog has the full details.

Note, there will be a merge conflict in drivers/misc/lkdtm_core.c when
merging to your tree as one lkdtm patch came in through the perf tree as
well as this one. The resolution is to take the const change that this
 tree provides.

All of these have been in linux-next for quite a while with no reported
 issues.

b4d9421098 ftrace/docs: Add documentation on how to use ftrace from within the kernel
With the coming removal of jprobes, using ftrace callbacks is one of the
utilities that replace the jprobes functionality. Having a document that
explains how to use ftrace as such will help in the transition from jprobes
to ftrace. This document is for kernel developers that require attaching a
callback to a function within the kernel.

24f0d316fd doc: coresight: correct usage for disabling idle states
In the coresight CPU debug document it suggests to use 'echo' command
to set latency request to /dev/cpu_dma_latency so can disable all CPU
idle states, but in fact this doesn't work.

This is because when the command 'echo' exits, it releases the device
node's file descriptor and the kernel release function removes the QoS
constraint; finally when the command 'echo' finished there have no
constraint imposed on cpu_dma_latency.

This patch changes to use 'exec' to access '/dev/cpu_dma_latency', the
command 'exec' can avoid the file descriptor to be closed so we can
keep the constraint on cpu_dma_latency.

This patch also adds the info for reference docs for PM QoS and cpuidle
sysfs.

f4dd029ee0 Char/Misc patches for 4.13-rc1
Here is the "big" char/misc driver patchset for 4.13-rc1.

Lots of stuff in here, a large thunderbolt update, w1 driver header
reorg, the new mux driver subsystem, google firmware driver updates, and
a raft of other smaller things. Full details in the shortlog.

All of these have been in linux-next for a while with the only reported
issue being a merge problem with this tree and the jc-docs tree in the
w1 documentation area. The fix should be obvious for what to do when it
happens, if not, we can send a follow-up patch for it afterward.

4c174688ee New features for this release:
o Pretty much a full rewrite of the processing of function plugins.
    i.e. echo do_IRQ:stacktrace > set_ftrace_filter

o The rewrite was needed to add plugins to be unique to tracing instances.
    i.e. mkdir instance/foo; cd instances/foo; echo do_IRQ:stacktrace > set_ftrace_filter
The old way was written very hacky. This removes a lot of those hacks.

o New "function-fork" tracing option. When set, pids in the set_ftrace_pid
will have their children added when the processes with their pids
listed in the set_ftrace_pid file forks.

o Exposure of "maxactive" for kretprobe in kprobe_events

o Allow for builtin init functions to be traced by the function tracer
(via the kernel command line). Module init function tracing will come
    in the next release.

o Added more selftests, and have selftests also test in an instance.

696ced4fb1 tracing/kprobes: expose maxactive for kretprobe in kprobe_events
When a kretprobe is installed on a kernel function, there is a maximum
limit of how many calls in parallel it can catch (aka "maxactive"). A
kernel module could call register_kretprobe() and initialize maxactive
(see example in samples/kprobes/kretprobe_example.c).

But that is not exposed to userspace and it is currently not possible to
choose maxactive when writing to /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events

The default maxactive can be as low as 1 on single-core with a
non-preemptive kernel. This is too low and we need to increase it not
only for recursive functions, but for functions that sleep or resched.

This patch updates the format of the command that can be written to
kprobe_events so that maxactive can be optionally specified.

I need this for a bpf program attached to the kretprobe of
inet_csk_accept, which can sleep for a long time.

This patch includes a basic selftest:

> # ./ftracetest -v test.d/kprobe/
> === Ftrace unit tests ===
> [1] Kprobe dynamic event - adding and removing	[PASS]
> [2] Kprobe dynamic event - busy event check	[PASS]

o Function filtering now supports more advance glob matching
o Ftrace selftests updates and added tests
o Softirq tag in traces now show only softirqs
o ARM nop added to non traced locations at compile time
o New trace_marker_raw file that allows for binary input
o Optimizations to the ring buffer
o Removal of kmap in trace_marker
o Wakeup and irqsoff tracers now adhere to the set_graph_notrace file
o Other various fixes and clean ups

Note, there are two patches marked for stable. These were discovered
near the end of the 4.9 rc release cycle. By the time I had them tested
it was just a matter of days before 4.9 would be released, and I
figured I would just submit them in the merge window. They are old
bugs and not critical. Nothing non-root could abuse.

   - Further work on PDF output, which remains a bit of a pain but
     should be more solid now.

   - Five more DocBook template files converted to Sphinx. Only 27 to
go... Lots of plain-text files have also been converted and
     integrated.

   - Images in binary formats have been replaced with more
     source-friendly versions.

   - Various bits of organizational work, including the renaming of
various files discussed at the kernel summit.

   - New documentation for the device_link mechanism.

... and, of course, lots of typo fixes and small updates"

fa32e8557b tracing: Add new trace_marker_raw
A new file is created:

 /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/trace_marker_raw

This allows for appications to create data structures and write the binary
data directly into it, and then read the trace data out from trace_pipe_raw
into the same type of data structure. This saves on converting numbers into
ASCII that would be required by trace_marker.
