This patch adds a dev_dbg() message to usb_create_sysfs_intf_files().
The message is not expected ever to appear; it's real purpose is to
satisfy the __must_check attribute on device_create_file() without
triggering a compiler warning about an empty statement.
In fact we don't really care if the sysfs attribute file doesn't get
created. The interface string descriptor is purely informational and
hardly ever present.

Cyril Roelandt reports that his JMicron JMS566 USB-SATA bridge fails
to handle WRITE commands with the FUA bit set, even though it claims
to support FUA. (Oddly enough, a later version of the same bridge,
version 2.03 as opposed to 1.14, doesn't claim to support FUA. Also
oddly, the bridge _does_ support FUA when using the UAS transport
instead of the Bulk-Only transport -- but this device was blacklisted
for uas in commit bc3bdb12bb ("usb-storage: Disable UAS on JMicron
SATA enclosure") for apparently unrelated reasons.)
This patch adds a usb-storage unusual_devs entry with the BROKEN_FUA
flag. This allows the bridge to work properly with usb-storage.

Commit bd0e6c9614 ("usb: hub: try old enumeration scheme first for
high speed devices") changed the way the hub driver enumerates
high-speed devices. Instead of using the "new" enumeration scheme
first and switching to the "old" scheme if that doesn't work, we start
with the "old" scheme. In theory this is better because the "old"
scheme is slightly faster -- it involves resetting the device only
once instead of twice.
However, for a long time Windows used only the "new" scheme. Zeng Tao
said that Windows 8 and later use the "old" scheme for high-speed
devices, but apparently there are some devices that don't like it.
William Bader reports that the Ricoh webcam built into his Sony Vaio
laptop not only doesn't enumerate under the "old" scheme, it gets hung
up so badly that it won't then enumerate under the "new" scheme! Only
a cold reset will fix it.
Therefore we will revert the commit and go back to trying the "new"
scheme first for high-speed devices.

Commit 8099f58f1e ("USB: hub: Don't record a connect-change event
during reset-resume") wasn't very well conceived. The problem it
tried to fix was that if a connect-change event occurred while the
system was asleep (such as a device disconnecting itself from the bus
when it is suspended and then reconnecting when it resumes)
requiring a reset-resume during the system wakeup transition, the hub
port's change_bit entry would remain set afterward. This would cause
the hub driver to believe another connect-change event had occurred
after the reset-resume, which was wrong and would lead the driver to
send unnecessary requests to the device (which could interfere with a
firmware update).
The commit tried to fix this by not setting the change_bit during the
wakeup. But this was the wrong thing to do; it means that when a
device is unplugged while the system is asleep, the hub driver doesn't
realize anything has happened: The change_bit flag which would tell it
to handle the disconnect event is clear.
The commit needs to be reverted and the problem fixed in a different
way. Fortunately an alternative solution was noted in the commit's
Changelog: We can continue to set the change_bit entry in
hub_activate() but then clear it when a reset-resume occurs. That way
the the hub driver will see the change_bit when a device is
disconnected but won't see it when the device is still present.
That's what this patch does.

The default control endpoint ep0 can return a STALL indicating the
device does not support the control transfer requests. This is called
a protocol stall and does not halt the endpoint.
xHC behaves a bit different. Its internal endpoint state will always
be halted on any stall, even if the device side of the endpiont is not
halted. So we do need to issue the reset endpoint command to clear the
xHC host intenal endpoint halt state, but should not request the HS hub
to clear the TT buffer unless device side of endpoint is halted.
Clearing the hub TT buffer at protocol stall caused ep0 to become
unresponsive for some FS/LS devices behind HS hubs, and class drivers
failed to set the interface due to timeout:

If a class driver cancels its only URB then the endpoint ring buffer will
appear empty to the xhci driver. xHC hardware may still process cached
TRBs, and complete with a STALL, halting the endpoint.
This halted endpoint was not handled correctly by xhci driver as events on
empty rings were all assumed to be spurious events.
xhci driver refused to restart the ring with EP_HALTED flag set, so class
driver was never informed the endpoint halted even if it queued new URBs.
The host side of the endpoint needs to be reset, and dequeue pointer should
be moved in order to clear the cached TRBs and resetart the endpoint.
Small adjustments in finding the new dequeue pointer are needed to support
the case of stall on an empty ring and unknown current TD.

This converts the FUSB302 driver to use GPIO descriptors.
The conversion to descriptors per se is pretty straight-forward.
In the process I discovered that:
1. The driver uses a completely undocumented device tree binding
for the interrupt GPIO line, "fcs,int_n". Ooops.
2. The undocumented binding, presumably since it has not seen
review, is just "fcs,int_n", lacking the compulsory "-gpios"
suffix and also something that is not a good name because
the "_n" implies the line is inverted which is something we
handle with flags in the device tree. Ooops.
3. Possibly the driver should not be requesting the line as a
GPIO and request the corresponding interrupt line by open
coding, the GPIO chip is very likely doubleing as an IRQ
controller and can probably provide an interrupt directly
for this line with interrupts-extended = <&gpio0 ...>;
4. Possibly the IRQ should just be tagged on the I2C client node
in the device tree like apparently ACPI does, as it overrides
this IRQ with client->irq if that exists.
But now it is too late to do much about that and as I can see
this is used like this in the Pinebook which is a shipping product
so let'a just contain the mess and move on.
The property currently appears in:
arch/arm64/boot/dts/rockchip/rk3399-pinebook-pro.dts
Create a quirk in the GPIO OF library to allow this property
specifically to be specified without the "-gpios" suffix, we have
other such bindings already.

For userspace functions using OS Descriptors, if a function also supplies
Extended Property descriptors currently the counts and lengths stored in
the ms_os_descs_ext_prop_{count,name_len,data_len} variables are not
getting reset to 0 during an unbind or when the epfiles are closed. If
the same function is re-bound and the descriptors are re-written, this

The copy_to/from_user() functions return the number of bytes remaining
but we want to return negative error codes. I changed a couple checks
in raw_ioctl_ep_read() and raw_ioctl_ep0_read() to show that we still
we returning zero on error.

Since commit ef441dd6af ("usb: typec: mux: Allow the muxes to be named")
the typec_switch_desc and typec_mux_desc structs contain a name field.
The pi3usb30532 driver allocates these structs on the stack and so far did
not explicitly zero the mem used for the structs. This causes the new name
fields to point to a random memory address, which in my test case happens
to be a valid address leading to "interesting" mux / switch names:
[root@localhost ~]# ls -l /sys/class/typec_mux/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Apr 14 12:55 ''$'\r''-switch' -> ...
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 0 Apr 14 12:55 ''$'\320\302\006''2'$'...
Explicitly initialize the structs to zero when declaring them on the stack
so that any unused fields get set to 0, fixing this.

This fixes a bug that causes the USB3 early console to freeze after
printing a single line on AMD machines because it can't parse the
Transfer TRB properly.
The spec at
https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/technical-specifications/extensible-host-controler-interface-usb-xhci.pdf
says in section "4.5.1 Device Context Index" that the Context Index,
also known as Endpoint ID according to
section "1.6 Terms and Abbreviations", is normally computed as
`DCI = (Endpoint Number * 2) + Direction`, which matches the current
definitions of XDBC_EPID_OUT and XDBC_EPID_IN.
However, the numbering in a Debug Capability Context data structure is
supposed to be different:
Section "7.6.3.2 Endpoint Contexts and Transfer Rings" explains that a
Debug Capability Context data structure has the endpoints mapped to indices
0 and 1.
Change XDBC_EPID_OUT/XDBC_EPID_IN to the spec-compliant values, add
XDBC_EPID_OUT_INTEL/XDBC_EPID_IN_INTEL with Intel's incorrect values, and
let xdbc_handle_tx_event() handle both.
I have verified that with this patch applied, the USB3 early console works
on both an Intel and an AMD machine.

This bug occurs when cancellation of the S-G transfer races with
transfer completion. When that happens, usb_sg_cancel() may continue
to access the transfer's URBs after usb_sg_wait() has freed them.
The bug is caused by the fact that usb_sg_cancel() does not take any
sort of reference to the transfer, and so there is nothing to prevent
the URBs from being deallocated while the routine is trying to use
them. The fix is to take such a reference by incrementing the
transfer's io->count field while the cancellation is in progres and
decrementing it afterward. The transfer's URBs are not deallocated
until io->complete is triggered, which happens when io->count reaches
zero.

u132_static_list is a global list protected by u132_module_lock.
It is read in the u132_hcd_exit() function without holding the lock
thus may lead to data race.
However, it turns out that this list isn't used for anything useful
and thus it is okay to get rid of it.
Thus, remove the u132_static_list from u132-hcd module.
Also remove struct list_head u132_list from struct u132.

The controller always supports link recovery for device in SS and SSP.
Remove the speed limit check. Also, when the device is in RESUME or
RESET state, it means the controller received the resume/reset request.
The driver must send the link recovery to acknowledge the request. They
are valid states for the driver to send link recovery.

Currently the calculation of max packet size limit for IN endpoints is
too restrictive. This prevents a matching of a capable hardware endpoint
during configuration. Below is the minimum recommended HW configuration
to support a particular endpoint setup from the databook:
For OUT endpoints, the databook recommended the minimum RxFIFO size to
be at least 3x MaxPacketSize + 3x setup packets size (8 bytes each) +
clock crossing margin (16 bytes).
For IN endpoints, the databook recommended the minimum TxFIFO size to be
at least 3x MaxPacketSize for endpoints that support burst. If the
endpoint doesn't support burst or when the device is operating in USB
2.0 mode, a minimum TxFIFO size of 2x MaxPacketSize is recommended.
Base on these recommendations, we can calculate the MaxPacketSize limit
of each endpoint. This patch revises the IN endpoint MaxPacketSize limit
and also sets the MaxPacketSize limit for OUT endpoints.

Merge tag 'pm-5.7-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm
Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"These clean up and rework the PM QoS API, address a suspend-to-idle
wakeup regression on some ACPI-based platforms, clean up and extend a
few cpuidle drivers, update multiple cpufreq drivers and cpufreq
documentation, and fix a number of issues in devfreq and several other
things all over.
Specifics:
- Clean up and rework the PM QoS API to simplify the code and reduce
the size of it (Rafael Wysocki).
- Fix a suspend-to-idle wakeup regression on Dell XPS13 9370 and
similar platforms where the USB plug/unplug events are handled by
the EC (Rafael Wysocki).
- CLean up the intel_idle and PSCI cpuidle drivers (Rafael Wysocki,
Ulf Hansson).
- Extend the haltpoll cpuidle driver so that it can be forced to run
on some systems where it refused to load (Maciej Szmigiero).
- Convert several cpufreq documents to the .rst format and move the
legacy driver documentation into one common file (Mauro Carvalho
Chehab, Rafael Wysocki).
- Update several cpufreq drivers:
* Extend and fix the imx-cpufreq-dt driver (Anson Huang).
* Improve the -EPROBE_DEFER handling and fix unwanted CPU
overclocking on i.MX6ULL in imx6q-cpufreq (Anson Huang,
Christoph Niedermaier).
* Add support for Krait based SoCs to the qcom driver (Ansuel
Smith).
* Add support for OPP_PLUS to ti-cpufreq (Lokesh Vutla).
* Add platform specific intermediate callbacks support to
cpufreq-dt and update the imx6q driver (Peng Fan).
* Simplify and consolidate some pieces of the intel_pstate
driver and update its documentation (Rafael Wysocki, Alex
Hung).
- Fix several devfreq issues:
* Remove unneeded extern keyword from a devfreq header file and
use the DEVFREQ_GOV_UPDATE_INTERNAL event name instead of
DEVFREQ_GOV_INTERNAL (Chanwoo Choi).
* Fix the handling of dev_pm_qos_remove_request() result
(Leonard Crestez).
* Use constant name for userspace governor (Pierre Kuo).
* Get rid of doc warnings and fix a typo (Christophe JAILLET).
- Use built-in RCU list checking in some places in the PM core to
avoid false-positive RCU usage warnings (Madhuparna Bhowmik).
- Add explicit READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() annotations to low-level PM
QoS routines (Qian Cai).
- Fix removal of wakeup sources to avoid NULL pointer dereferences in
a corner case (Neeraj Upadhyay).
- Clean up the handling of hibernate compat ioctls and fix the
related documentation (Eric Biggers).
- Update the idle_inject power capping driver to use variable-length
arrays instead of zero-length arrays (Gustavo Silva).
- Fix list format in a PM QoS document (Randy Dunlap).
- Make the cpufreq stats module use scnprintf() to avoid potential
buffer overflows (Takashi Iwai).
- Add pm_runtime_get_if_active() to PM-runtime API (Sakari Ailus).
- Allow no domain-idle-states DT property in generic PM domains (Ulf
Hansson).
- Fix a broken y-axis scale in the intel_pstate_tracer utility (Doug
Smythies)"

In AIO case, the request is freed up if ep_queue fails.
However, io_data->req still has the reference to this freed
request. In the case of this failure if there is aio_cancel
call on this io_data it will lead to an invalid dequeue
operation and a potential use after free issue.
Fix this by setting the io_data->req to NULL when the request

Currently on ACPI-enabled systems the USB interface device has no link to
the actual firmware node and thus drivers may not parse additional information
given in the table. The new feature, proposed here, allows to pass properties
or other information to the drivers.
The ACPI companion of the device has to be set for USB interface devices
to achieve above. Use ACPI_COMPANION_SET macro to set this.
Note, OF already does link of_node and this is the same for ACPI case.

completion uses a wait_queue_head_t to enqueue waiters.
wait_queue_head_t contains a spinlock_t to protect the list of waiters
which excludes it from being used in truly atomic context on a PREEMPT_RT
enabled kernel.
The spinlock in the wait queue head cannot be replaced by a raw_spinlock
because:
- wait queues can have custom wakeup callbacks, which acquire other
spinlock_t locks and have potentially long execution times
- wake_up() walks an unbounded number of list entries during the wake up
and may wake an unbounded number of waiters.
For simplicity and performance reasons complete() should be usable on
PREEMPT_RT enabled kernels.
completions do not use custom wakeup callbacks and are usually single
waiter, except for a few corner cases.
Replace the wait queue in the completion with a simple wait queue (swait),
which uses a raw_spinlock_t for protecting the waiter list and therefore is
safe to use inside truly atomic regions on PREEMPT_RT.
There is no semantical or functional change:
- completions use the exclusive wait mode which is what swait provides
- complete() wakes one exclusive waiter
- complete_all() wakes all waiters while holding the lock which protects
the wait queue against newly incoming waiters. The conversion to swait
preserves this behaviour.
complete_all() might cause unbound latencies with a large number of waiters
being woken at once, but most complete_all() usage sites are either in
testing or initialization code or have only a really small number of
concurrent waiters which for now does not cause a latency problem. Keep it
simple for now.
The fixup of the warning check in the USB gadget driver is just a straight
forward conversion of the lockless waiter check from one waitqueue type to
the other.

ep_io() uses a completion on stack and open codes the waiting with:
wait_event_interruptible (done.wait, done.done);
and
wait_event (done.wait, done.done);
This waits in non-exclusive mode for complete(), but there is no reason to
do so because the completion can only be waited for by the task itself and
complete() wakes exactly one exlusive waiter.
Replace the open coded implementation with the corresponding
wait_for_completion*() functions.
No functional change.

By default, tty_port_init() initializes those parameters to a multiple
of HZ. For instance in line 69 of tty_port.c:
port->close_delay = (50 * HZ) / 100;
https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/drivers/tty/tty_port.c#L69
With e.g. CONFIG_HZ = 250 (as this is the case for Ubuntu 18.04
linux-image-4.15.0-37-generic), the default setting for close_delay is
thus 125.
When ioctl(fd, TIOCGSERIAL, &s) is executed, the setting returned in
user space is '12' (125/10). When ioctl(fd, TIOCSSERIAL, &s) is then
executed with the same setting '12', the value is interpreted as '120'
which is different from the current setting and a EPERM error may be
raised by set_serial_info() if !CAP_SYS_ADMIN.

We have been receiving bug reports that ethernet connections over
RTL8153 based ethernet adapters stops working after a while with
errors like these showing up in dmesg when the ethernet stops working:

[12702.333456] r8152 6-1:1.0 enp10s0u1: Tx timeout
[12707.965422] r8152 6-1:1.0 enp10s0u1: Tx timeout
This has been reported on Dell WD15 docks, Belkin USB-C Express Dock 3.1
docks and with generic USB to ethernet dongles using the RTL8153
chipsets. Some users have tried adding usbcore.quirks=0bda:8153:k to
the kernel commandline and all users who have tried this report that
this fixes this.
Also note that we already have an existing NO_LPM quirk for the RTL8153
used in the Microsoft Surface Dock (where it uses a different usb-id).
This commit adds a NO_LPM quirk for the generic Realtek RTL8153
0bda:8153 usb-id, fixing the Tx timeout errors on these devices.

When handling a PIO bulk transfer with highmem buffer, a temporary
mapping is assigned to urb->transfer_buffer. After the transfer is
complete, an invalid address is left behind in this pointer. This is
not ordinarily a problem since nothing touches that buffer before the
urb is released. However, when usbmon is active, usbmon_urb_complete()
calls (indirectly) mon_bin_get_data() which does access the transfer
buffer if it is set. To prevent an invalid memory access here, reset
urb->transfer_buffer to NULL when finished (musb_host_rx()), or do not
set it at all (musb_host_tx()).

drivers/usb/gadget/legacy/Kconfig creates a 'choice' inside another
'choice'.
The outer choice: line 17 "USB Gadget precomposed configurations"
The inner choice: line 484 "EHCI Debug Device mode"
I wondered why the whole legacy gadget drivers reside in such a big
choice block.
This dates back to 2003, "[PATCH] USB: fix for multiple definition of
`usb_gadget_get_string'". [1]
At that time, the global function, usb_gadget_get_string(), was linked
into multiple drivers. That was why only one driver was able to become
built-in at the same time.
Later, commit a84d9e5361 ("usb: gadget: start with libcomposite")
moved usb_gadget_get_string() to a separate module, libcomposite.ko
instead of including usbstring.c from multiple modules.
More and more refactoring was done, and after commit 1bcce93947
("usb: gadget: multi: convert to new interface of f_mass_storage"),
you can link multiple gadget drivers into vmlinux without causing
multiple definition error.
This is the only user of the nested choice structure ever. Removing
this mess will make some Kconfig cleanups possible.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertenly introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

USB Raw Gadget is a kernel module that provides a userspace interface for
the USB Gadget subsystem. Essentially it allows to emulate USB devices
from userspace. Enabled with CONFIG_USB_RAW_GADGET. Raw Gadget is
currently a strictly debugging feature and shouldn't be used in
production.
Raw Gadget is similar to GadgetFS, but provides a more low-level and
direct access to the USB Gadget layer for the userspace. The key
differences are:
1. Every USB request is passed to the userspace to get a response, while
GadgetFS responds to some USB requests internally based on the provided
descriptors. However note, that the UDC driver might respond to some
requests on its own and never forward them to the Gadget layer.
2. GadgetFS performs some sanity checks on the provided USB descriptors,
while Raw Gadget allows you to provide arbitrary data as responses to
USB requests.
3. Raw Gadget provides a way to select a UDC device/driver to bind to,
while GadgetFS currently binds to the first available UDC.
4. Raw Gadget uses predictable endpoint names (handles) across different
UDCs (as long as UDCs have enough endpoints of each required transfer
type).
5. Raw Gadget has ioctl-based interface instead of a filesystem-based one.

The dwc3 core binding specifies one reset.
However some variants of the hardware may have more. Previously
this was handled by using the dwc3-of-simple glue driver, but
that resulted in a proliferation of bindings for for every

So this patch reworks the reading of the resets to fetch all the
resets specified in the dts together.

Depending on the current link state the steps to resume the link to U0
varies. The normal case when a port is suspended (U3) we set the link
to U0 and wait for a port event when U3exit completed and port moved to
U0.
If the port is in U1/U2, then no event is issued, just set link to U0
If port is in Resume or Recovery state then the device has already
initiated resume, and this host initiated resume is racing against it.

NVIDIA VirtualLink (svid 0x955) has two altmode, vdo=0x1 for
VirtualLink DP mode and vdo=0x3 for NVIDIA test mode. NVIDIA
test device FTB (Function Test Board) reports altmode list with
vdo=0x3 first and then vdo=0x1. The list is:
SVID VDO
0xff01 0xc05
0x28de 0x8085
0x955 0x3
0x955 0x1
Current logic to assign mode value is based on order
in altmode list. This causes a mismatch of CON and SOP altmodes
since NVIDIA GPU connector has order of vdo=0x1 first and then
vdo=0x3. Fixing this by changing the order of vdo values
reported by NVIDIA test device. the new list will be:
SVID VDO
0xff01 0xc05
0x28de 0x8085
0x955 0x1085
0x955 0x3
Also NVIDIA VirtualLink (svid 0x955) uses pin E for display mode.
NVIDIA test device reports vdo of 0x1 so make sure vdo values
always have pin E assignement.

If the registration of the DisplayPort was not successful,
or if the port does not support DisplayPort alt mode in the
first place, the function ucsi_displayport_remove_partner()
will fail with NULL pointer dereference when it attempts to
access the driver data.
Adding a check to the function to make sure there really is
driver data for the device before modifying it.

libtraceevent (used by perf and trace-cmd) failed to parse the
xhci_urb_dequeue trace event. This is because the user space trace
event format parsing is not a full C compiler. It can handle some basic
logic, but is not meant to be able to handle everything C can do.
In cases where a trace event field needs to be converted from a number
to a string, there's the __print_symbolic() macro that should be used:
See samples/trace_events/trace-events-sample.h
Some xhci trace events open coded the __print_symbolic() causing the
user spaces tools to fail to parse it. This has to be replaced with
__print_symbolic() instead.

The USB role callback functions had a parameter pointing to
the parent device (struct device) of the switch. The
assumption was that the switch parent is always the
controller. Firstly, that may not be true in every case, and
secondly, it prevents us from supporting devices that supply
multiple muxes.

If scatter-gather operation is allowed, a large USB request is split
into multiple TRBs. For preparing TRBs for sg list, driver iterates
over the list and creates TRB for each sg and mark the chain bit to
false for the last sg. The current IOMMU driver is clubbing the list
of sgs which shares a page boundary into one and giving it to USB driver.
With this the number of sgs mapped it not equal to the the number of sgs
passed. Because of this USB driver is not marking the chain bit to false
since it couldn't iterate to the last sg. This patch addresses this issue
by marking the chain bit to false if it is the last mapped sg.
At a practical level, this patch resolves USB transfer stalls
seen with adb on dwc3 based db845c, pixel3 and other qcom
hardware after functionfs gadget added scatter-gather support
around v4.20.

Move devm_regulator_get() out of usb251xb_get_ofdata() to address the

If there are TRBs pending during reset endpoint operation, the
DMA will advance after reset operation, but it isn't expected,
since the data is not yet available (For OUT, the data is not

interrupt since the EP_TRADDR already points to next TRB entry
and doorbell is not set.
To fix it, it toggles cycle bit before reset operation, and restores
it after reset, it could avoid unexpected DMA advance due to

Variables declared in a switch statement before any case statements
cannot be automatically initialized with compiler instrumentation (as
they are not part of any execution flow). With GCC's proposed automatic
stack variable initialization feature, this triggers a warning (and they
don't get initialized). Clang's automatic stack variable initialization
(via CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL=y) doesn't throw a warning, but it also
doesn't initialize such variables[1]. Note that these warnings (or silent
skipping) happen before the dead-store elimination optimization phase,
so even when the automatic initializations are later elided in favor of
direct initializations, the warnings remain.
To avoid these problems, move such variables into the "case" where
they're used or lift them up into the main function body.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]

libtraceevent (used by perf and trace-cmd) failed to parse the
xhci_urb_dequeue trace event.
This has to be replaced with
__print_symbolic() instead.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {

struct boo array[];

By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertenly introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.

Now that USB device drivers can reuse code from the generic USB device
driver, we need to make sure that they get selected rather than the
generic driver. Add an id_table and match vfunc to the usb_device_driver
struct, which will get used to select a better matching driver at
->probe time.
This is a similar mechanism to that used in the HID drivers, with the
generic driver being selected unless there's a better matching one found
in the registered drivers (see hid_generic_match() in
drivers/hid/hid-generic.c).

The kernel currenly has only 2 usb_device_drivers, one generic one, one
that completely replaces the generic one to make USB devices usable over
a network.
Use the newly exported generic driver functions when a driver declares
to want them run, in addition to its own code. This makes it possible to
write drivers that extend the generic USB driver.
Note that this patch is not enough for another driver to automatically

Using the generic notification chain is not reasonable with

between the drivers of the components that need the

Even though originally the USB Type-C Specification did not
describe the steps for power role swapping without USB PD
contract in place, it did not actually mean power role swap
without USB PD was not allowed. The USB Type-C Specification
did not clearly separate the data and power roles until in
the release 1.2 which is why there also were no clear steps
for the scenario where only the power role was swapped
without USB PD contract before that.
Since in the latest version of the specification the power
role swap without USB PD is now clearly mentioned as allowed
operation, removing the check that prevented power role swap
without USB PD support.

The port_type attribute is special. It is meant to allow
changing the capability of the port in runtime. It is purely
Linux kernel specific feature, i.e. the feature is not
described in any of the USB specifications.
Because of the special nature of this attribute, handling it
differently compared to the other writable attributes, and
hiding it when the underlying port interface (or just the
driver) does not support the feature.
