d541ae4e76 vt: avoid a VLA in the unicode screen scroll function
The nr argument is typically small: most often nr == 1. However this
could be abused with a very large explicit scroll in a resized screen.
Make the code scroll lines by performing an array rotation operation to
avoid the need for a large temporary space.

This preserves whatever was written even if we can't currently display the
given glyph. Mouse paste won't corrupt any character of wcwidth() == 1
anymore.

Note that for now uniscr doesn't get allocated until something reads
/dev/vcsuN for that console, making this code dormant for most users.

1481ecf194 serial: sh-sci: Fix use-after-free on subsequent port startup
sci_request_irq() checks port->irqstr[j] for a NULL pointer, to decide
if a fallback interrupt name string should be allocated or not.

While this string is freed during port shutdown, the pointer is not
zeroed. Hence on a subsequent startup of the port, it will still be
pointing to the freed memory, leading to e.g.

    WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 404 at fs/proc/generic.c:388 __proc_create+0xbc/0x260
    name len 0

or to a crash (the latter is more likely with CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB=y, due
to the poisoning of freed memory).

Instead of zeroeing the pointer at multiple places, preinitialize
port->irqstr[j] to zero to fix this.

fefe287e4b tty: support CIBAUD without BOTHER
Since commit edc6afc549 ("[PATCH] tty: switch to ktermios and new
framework") arbitrary baud rates can be requested using BOTHER and input
rates can be requested using the termios CIBAUD bits (CBAUD shifted
IBSHIFT bits).

This functionality has been conditionally compiled depending on whether
an architecture defines BOTHER and IBSHIFT respectively, but would in
fact fail to compile unless both symbols were defined due to cross
dependencies.

Relax the IBSHIFT => BOTHER dependency so that an architecture could
theoretically support CIBAUD without the Linux-specific BOTHER, while
hopefully making the current conditional-compilation directives a bit
less confusing.

Note that the long-term goal is still to have all architectures support
both features, so an alternative could just be to have the lot depend on
BOTHER.

1cee38f036 tty: fix termios input-speed encoding when using BOTHER
When the termios CIBAUD bits are left unset (i.e. B0), we use the same
output and input speed and should leave CIBAUD unchanged.

When the user requests a rate using BOTHER and c_ospeed which the driver
cannot set exactly, the driver can report back the actual baud rate
using tty_termios_encode_baud_rate(). If this rate is close enough to a
standard rate however, we could end up setting CIBAUD to a Bfoo value
despite the user having left it unset.

This in turn could lead to an unexpected input rate being set on
subsequent termios updates.

Fix this by using a zero tolerance value also for the input rate when
CIBAUD is clear so that the matching logic works as expected.

for our build, this is crashing at:

    circ->buf[circ->head] = c;

Looking in uart_port_startup(), it seems that circ->buf (state->xmit.buf)
protected by the "per-port mutex", which based on uart_port_check() is
state->port.mutex. Indeed, the lock acquired in uart_put_char() is
uport->lock, i.e. not the same lock.

Anyway, since the lock is not acquired, if uart_shutdown() is called, the
last chunk of that function may release state->xmit.buf before its assigned
to null, and cause the race above.

To fix it, let's lock uport->lock when allocating/deallocating
state->xmit.buf in addition to the per-port mutex.

v2: switch to locking uport->lock on allocation/deallocation instead of
locking the per-port mutex in uart_put_char. Note that since
uport->lock is a spin lock, we have to switch the allocation to
    GFP_ATOMIC.
v3: move the allocation outside the lock, so we can switch back to
    GFP_KERNEL

For Synopsys DesignWare 8250 uart which version >= 4.00a, there's a
valid divisor latch fraction register. The fractional divisor width is
4bits ~ 6bits.

Now the preparation is done, it's easy to add the feature support.
This patch firstly tries to get the fractional divisor width during
probe, then setups dw specific get_divisor() and set_divisor() hook.

leaving that to backend video drivers where this can be highly optimized.
There is currently no common method for those drivers to tell the core

has no provision for any scrollback.

d8ae724271 vt: preserve unicode values corresponding to screen characters
The vt code translates UTF-8 strings into glyph index values and stores
those glyph values directly in the screen buffer. Because there can only
be at most 512 glyphs, it is impossible to represent most unicode

instead. The original unicode value is then lost.

This patch implements the basic screen buffer handling to preserve unicode

ebec3f8f52 n_tty: Access echo_* variables carefully.
syzbot is reporting stalls at __process_echoes() [1]. This is because
since ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail becomes true for some reason,
the discard loop is serving as almost infinite loop. This patch tries to
avoid falling into ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail situation by
making access to echo_* variables more carefully.

Since reset_buffer_flags() is called without output_lock held, it should
not touch echo_* variables. And omit a call to reset_buffer_flags() from
n_tty_open() by using vzalloc().

Since add_echo_byte() is called without output_lock held, it needs memory
barrier between storing into echo_buf[] and incrementing echo_head counter.
echo_buf() needs corresponding memory barrier before reading echo_buf[].
Lack of handling the possibility of not-yet-stored multi-byte operation
might be the reason of falling into ldata->echo_commit < ldata->echo_tail
situation, for if I do WARN_ON(ldata->echo_commit == tail + 1) prior to
echo_buf(ldata, tail + 1), the WARN_ON() fires.

Also, explicitly masking with buffer for the former "while" loop, and
use ldata->echo_commit > tail for the latter "while" loop.

de4ed391ae serial: xuartps: reduce hardware TX race condition
After sending data to the uart, the driver was waiting until the TX
FIFO was empty (for every single char written). After that, TX was
disabled by writing the original TX state to the status register. At
that time however, the state machine could still be shifting
characters. Not waiting can result in strange hardware states,
especially when coupled with calls to cdns_uart_set_termios, whose
symptom generally is garbage characters being received from uart or a
hang.

According to UG585, the TACTIVE bit of the channel status register
indicates the shifter operation and we should be waiting for that bit
to clear.

Sending characters does not require the TX FIFO to be empty, but merely
to not be full. So cdns_uart_console_putchar is updated accordingly.

During tests with an instrumented kernel and an oscilloscope, we could
determine that the chance of a race is reduced by this patch. It is not
removed entirely. On the oscilloscope, one can see that disabling the
transmitter early can result in the transmission hanging in the middle
of a character for a tiny duration. This hiccup is enough to
desynchronize with a remote device for a sequence of characters until a
data bit doesn't match the start or stop bits anymore.

that bit is now the only bit kept.

Currently, the regression is harmless, because the previous write to the

previously cleared. The *RST bits are cleared by the hardware, so this

5fd691afdf atomic/tty: Fix up atomic abuse in ldsem
Mark found ldsem_cmpxchg() needed an (atomic_long_t *) cast to keep
working after making the atomic_long interface type safe.

Needing casts is bad form, which made me look at the code. There are no
ld_semaphore::count users outside of these functions so there is no
reason why it can not be an atomic_long_t in the first place, obviating
the need for this cast.

That also ensures the loads use atomic_long_read(), which implies (at
least) READ_ONCE() in order to guarantee single-copy-atomic loads.

When using atomic_long_try_cmpxchg() the ldsem_cmpxchg() wrapper gets
very thin (the only difference is not changing *old on success, which
most callers don't seem to care about).

So rework the whole thing to use atomic_long_t and its accessors
directly.

While there, fixup all the horrible comment styles.

c3bf40ce2c serdev: add controller runtime PM support
Add support for controller runtime power management to serdev core. This
is needed to allow slave drivers to manage the runtime PM state of the
underlying serial controller when its driver, in turn, implements more
aggressive runtime power management (e.g. using autosuspend).

For some applications, for example, where loss off initial data after a
remote-wakeup event is acceptable or where rx is not used at all,
aggressive serial controller runtime PM may be used without further
involvement of the slave driver. But when this is not the case, the
slave driver must be able to indicate when incoming data is expected in
order to avoid data loss.

To facilitate the common case, where the serial controller power state
is active whenever the port is open (which is the case with just about
every serial driver), and where data loss is not acceptable and cannot
even be prevented by explicit controller runtime power management, an
RPM reference is taken in serdev open and put again at close. This
reference can later be balanced by any serdev driver which wants and/or
can handle aggressive controller runtime PM.

Note that the .ignore_children flag is set for the serdev controller to
allow the underlying hardware to idle when no I/O is expected, regardless
of the slave device RPM state.

4cf9a888fd serial: max310x: Check the clock readiness
This chip has a diagnostics status bit informing about the state and
stability of the clock subsystem. According to the datasheet (STSint
register, bit 5, ClockReady), this bit works with the crystal
oscillator, but even without the PLL. Therefore:

- ensure that the clock check is done even when PLL is not active
- warn when the chip thinks that the clock is not ready yet

There are HW features which would let us wait asynchronously (there's a
maskable IRQ for that bit), but I think that even this simple check is a
net improvement. It would have saved me two days of debugging :).

Initially when register shadowing was introduced (commit 3a0ab62f43

7a932516f5 vfs/y2038: inode timestamps conversion to timespec64
This is a late set of changes from Deepa Dinamani doing an automated
treewide conversion of the inode and iattr structures from 'timespec'
to 'timespec64', to push the conversion from the VFS layer into the
 individual file systems.

There were no conflicts between this and the contents of linux-next
until just before the merge window, when we saw multiple problems:

 - A minor conflict with my own y2038 fixes, which I could address
by adding another patch on top here.
 - One semantic conflict with late changes to the NFS tree. I addressed
this by merging Deepa's original branch on top of the changes that
now got merged into mainline and making sure the merge commit includes
the necessary changes as produced by coccinelle.
 - A trivial conflict against the removal of staging/lustre.
 - Multiple conflicts against the VFS changes in the overlayfs tree.
These are still part of linux-next, but apparently this is no longer
intended for 4.18 [1], so I am ignoring that part.

 As Deepa writes:

The series aims to switch vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64.
Currently vfs uses struct timespec, which is not y2038 safe.

   The series involves the following:
   1. Add vfs helper functions for supporting struct timepec64 timestamps.
   2. Cast prints of vfs timestamps to avoid warnings after the switch.
   3. Simplify code using vfs timestamps so that the actual
      replacement becomes easy.
   4. Convert vfs timestamps to use struct timespec64 using a script.
This is a flag day patch.

   Next steps:
   1. Convert APIs that can handle timespec64, instead of converting
      timestamps at the boundaries.
   2. Update internal data structures to avoid timestamp conversions.

 Thomas Gleixner adds:

I think there is no point to drag that out for the next merge window.
The whole thing needs to be done in one go for the core changes which
means that you're going to play that catchup game forever. Let's get
over with it towards the end of the merge window.

a86854d0c5 treewide: devm_kzalloc() -> devm_kcalloc()
The devm_kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, devm_kcalloc().
This patch replaces cases of:

        devm_kzalloc(handle, a * b, gfp)

with:
        devm_kcalloc(handle, a * b, gfp)

as well as handling cases of:

        devm_kzalloc(handle, a * b * c, gfp)

with:

        devm_kzalloc(handle, array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)

as it's slightly less ugly than:

        devm_kcalloc(handle, array_size(a, b), c, gfp)

This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:

        devm_kzalloc(handle, 4 * 1024, gfp)

though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.

Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.

Some manual whitespace fixes were needed in this patch, as Coccinelle
really liked to write "=devm_kcalloc..." instead of "= devm_kcalloc...".

The Coccinelle script used for this was:

// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

6da2ec5605 treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array()
The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This
patch replaces cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b, gfp)

with:
        kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp)

as well as handling cases of:

        kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp)

with:

        kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp)

as it's slightly less ugly than:

        kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp)

This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like:

        kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp)

though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion.

Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were
dropped, since they're redundant.

The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own
implementation of kmalloc().

The Coccinelle script used for this was:

// Fix redundant parens around sizeof().

c90fca951e powerpc updates for 4.18
Notable changes:

  - Support for split PMD page table lock on 64-bit Book3S (Power8/9).

  - Add support for HAVE_RELIABLE_STACKTRACE, so we properly support live
    patching again.

  - Add support for patching barrier_nospec in copy_from_user() and syscall entry.

  - A couple of fixes for our data breakpoints on Book3S.

  - A series from Nick optimising TLB/mm handling with the Radix MMU.

  - Numerous small cleanups to squash sparse/gcc warnings from Mathieu Malaterre.

  - Several series optimising various parts of the 32-bit code from Christophe Leroy.

  - Removal of support for two old machines, "SBC834xE" and "C2K" ("GEFanuc,C2K"),
which is why the diffstat has so many deletions.

And many other small improvements & fixes.

There's a few out-of-area changes. Some minor ftrace changes OK'ed by Steve, and
a fix to our powernv cpuidle driver. Then there's a series touching mm, x86 and
fs/proc/task_mmu.c, which cleans up some details around pkey support. It was
ack'ed/reviewed by Ingo & Dave and has been in next for several weeks.

script. This catches about 80% of the changes.
All the header file and logic changes are included in the
first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions.
I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other
filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple
for review.

The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases.
But, this version was sufficient for my usecase.

447808bf50 hvc_opal: don't set tb_ticks_per_usec in udbg_init_opal_common()
time_init() will set up tb_ticks_per_usec based on reality.
time_init() is called *after* udbg_init_opal_common() during boot.

from arch/powerpc/kernel/time.c:
  unsigned long tb_ticks_per_usec = 100; /* sane default */

Currently, all powernv systems have a timebase frequency of 512mhz
(512000000/1000000 == 0x200) - although there's nothing written
down anywhere that I can find saying that we couldn't make that
different based on the requirements in the ISA.

So, we've been (accidentally) thwacking the (currently) correct
(for powernv at least) value for tb_ticks_per_usec earlier than
we otherwise would have.

The "sane default" seems to be adequate for our purposes between
udbg_init_opal_common() and time_init() being called, and if it isn't,
then we should probably be setting it somewhere that isn't hvc_opal.c!

4b4ecd9cb8 vt: Perform safe console erase only once
Commit f8df13e0a9 ("tty: Clean console safely") added code to clear
both the scrollback buffer and the screen with "\e[3J", then execution
falls through into the code to simply clear the screen. This means
scr_memsetw() and the console driver update callback are called twice
on the whole screen buffer. Let's reorganize the code so the same work
is not performed twice needlessly.

b6da31b2c0 tty: Fix data race in tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag
Unlike normal serials, in pty layer, there is no guarantee that multiple
threads don't insert input characters at the same time. If it is happened,
tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag can be executed concurrently. This can
lead slab out-of-bounds write in tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag.

Call sequences are as follows.
CPU0 CPU1
n_tty_ioctl_helper n_tty_ioctl_helper
__start_tty tty_send_xchar
tty_wakeup pty_write
n_hdlc_tty_wakeup tty_insert_flip_string
n_hdlc_send_frames tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag
pty_write
tty_insert_flip_string
tty_insert_flip_string_fixed_flag

To fix the race, acquire port->lock in pty_write() before it inserts input
characters to tty buffer. It prevents multiple threads from inserting
input characters concurrently.

The crash log is as follows:

638a6f4ebe tty: serial: msm_geni_serial: Fix TX infinite loop
The GENI serial driver handled transmit by leaving stuff in the
common circular buffer until it had completely caught up to the head,
then clearing it out all at once. This is a suboptimal way to do
transmit, as it leaves data in the circular buffer that could be
freed. Moreover, the logic implementing it is wrong, and it is easy to
get into a situation where the UART infinitely writes out the same buffer.

I could reproduce infinite serial output of the same buffer by running
dmesg, then hitting Ctrl-C. I believe what happened is xmit_size was
something large, marching towards a larger value. Then the generic OS
code flushed out the buffer and replaced it with two characters. Now the
xmit_size is a large value marching towards a small value, which it wasn't
expecting. The driver subtracts xmit_size (very large) from
uart_circ_chars_pending (2), underflows, and repeats ad nauseum. The
locking isn't wrong here, as the locks are held whenever the buffer is
manipulated, it's just that the driver wasn't expecting the buffer to be
flushed out from underneath it in between transmits.

This change reworks transmit to grab what it can from the circular buffer,
and then update ->tail, both fixing the underflow and freeing up space
for a smoother circular experience.

13dc04d0e5 serial: 8250: omap: Fix idling of clocks for unused uarts
I noticed that unused UARTs won't necessarily idle properly always
unless at least one byte tx transfer is done first.

After some debugging I narrowed down the problem to the scr register
dma configuration bits that need to be set before softreset for the
clocks to idle. Unless we do this, the module clkctrl idlest bits
may be set to 1 instead of 3 meaning the clock will never idle and
is blocking deeper idle states for the whole domain.

This might be related to the configuration done by the bootloader
or kexec booting where certain configurations cause the 8250 or
the clkctrl clock to jam in a way where setting of the scr bits
and reset is needed to clear it. I've tried diffing the 8250
registers for the various modes, but did not see anything specific.
So far I've only seen this on omap4 but I'm suspecting this might
also happen on the other clkctrl using SoCs considering they
already have a quirk enabled for UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE.

Let's fix the issue by configuring scr before reset for basic dma
even if we don't use it. The scr register will be reset when we do
softreset few lines after, and we restore scr on resume. We should
do this for all the SoCs with UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE quirk flag
set since the ones with UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE are all based
using clkctrl similar to omap4.

Looks like both OMAP_UART_SCR_DMAMODE_1 | OMAP_UART_SCR_DMAMODE_CTL
bits are needed for the clkctrl to idle after a softreset.

And we need to add omap4 to also use the UART_ERRATA_CLOCK_DISABLE
for the related workaround to be enabled. This same compatible
value will also be used for omap5.

Commit 40f70c03e3 ("serial: sh-sci: add locking to console write
function to avoid SMP lockup") copied the strategy to avoid locking
problems in conjuncture with the console from the UART8250
driver. Instead using directly spin_{try}lock_irqsave(),
local_irq_save() followed by spin_{try}lock() was used. While this is
correct on mainline, for -rt it is a problem. spin_{try}lock() will
check if it is running in a valid context. Since the local_irq_save()
has already been executed, the context has changed and
spin_{try}lock() will complain. The reason why spin_{try}lock()
complains is that on -rt the spin locks are turned into mutexes and
therefore can sleep. Sleeping with interrupts disabled is not valid.

9594b5be7e tty/serial: atmel: use port->name as name in request_irq()
I was puzzled while looking at /proc/interrupts and random things showed
up between reboots. This occurred more often but I realised it later. The
"correct" output should be:
|38: 11861 atmel-aic5 2 Level ttyS0

but I saw sometimes
|38: 6426 atmel-aic5 2 Level tty1

and accounted it wrongly as correct. This is use after free and the
former example randomly got the "old" pointer which pointed to the same
content. With SLAB_FREELIST_RANDOM and HARDENED I even got
|38: 7067 atmel-aic5 2 Level E=Started User Manager for UID 0

or other nonsense.
As it turns out the tty, pointer that is accessed in atmel_startup(), is
freed() before atmel_shutdown(). It seems to happen quite often that the
tty for ttyS0 is allocated and freed while ->shutdown is not invoked. I
don't do anything special - just a systemd boot :)

Use dev_name(&pdev->dev) as the IRQ name for request_irq(). This exists
as long as the driver is loaded so no use-after-free here.

4a7e625ce5 tty: pl011: Avoid spuriously stuck-off interrupts
Commit 9b96fbacda ("serial: PL011: clear pending interrupts")
clears the RX and receive timeout interrupts on pl011 startup, to
avoid a screaming-interrupt scenario that can occur when the
firmware or bootloader leaves these interrupts asserted.

This has been noted as an issue when running Linux on qemu [1].

Unfortunately, the above fix seems to lead to potential
misbehaviour if the RX FIFO interrupt is asserted _non_ spuriously
on driver startup, if the RX FIFO is also already full to the
trigger level.

Clearing the RX FIFO interrupt does not change the FIFO fill level.
In this scenario, because the interrupt is now clear and because
the FIFO is already full to the trigger level, no new assertion of
the RX FIFO interrupt can occur unless the FIFO is drained back
below the trigger level. This never occurs because the pl011
driver is waiting for an RX FIFO interrupt to tell it that there is
something to read, and does not read the FIFO at all until that
interrupt occurs.

Thus, simply clearing "spurious" interrupts on startup may be
misguided, since there is no way to be sure that the interrupts are
truly spurious, and things can go wrong if they are not.

This patch instead clears the interrupt condition by draining the
RX FIFO during UART startup, after clearing any potentially
spurious interrupt. This should ensure that an interrupt will
definitely be asserted if the RX FIFO subsequently becomes
sufficiently full.

The drain is done at the point of enabling interrupts only. This
means that it will occur any time the UART is newly opened through
the tty layer. It will not apply to polled-mode use of the UART by
kgdboc: since that scenario cannot use interrupts by design, this
should not matter. kgdboc will interact badly with "normal" use of
the UART in any case: this patch makes no attempt to paper over
such issues.

This patch does not attempt to address the case where the RX FIFO
fills faster than it can be drained: that is a pathological
hardware design problem that is beyond the scope of the driver to
work around. As a failsafe, the number of poll iterations for
draining the FIFO is limited to twice the FIFO size. This will
ensure that the kernel at least boots even if it is impossible to
drain the FIFO for some reason.

5909c0bf9c serial/aspeed-vuart: Implement quick throttle mechanism
Although we populate the ->throttle and ->unthrottle UART operations,
these may not be called until the ldisc has had a chance to schedule and
check buffer space. This means that we may overflow the flip buffers
without ever hitting the ldisc's throttle threshold.

This change implements an interrupt-based throttle, where we check for
space in the flip buffers before reading characters from the UART's
FIFO. If there's no space available, we disable the RX interrupt and
schedule a timer to check for space later.

For this, we need an unlocked version of the set_throttle function to be
able to change throttle state from the irq_handler, which already holds
port->lock.

This prevents a case where we drop characters under heavy RX load.

54e53b2e80 tty: serial: 8250: pass IRQ shared flag to UART ports
On some systems IRQ lines between multiple UARTs might be shared. If so, the
irqflags have to be configured accordingly. The reason is: The 8250 port startup
code performs IRQ tests *before* the IRQ handler for that particular port is
registered. This is performed in serial8250_do_startup(). This function checks
whether IRQF_SHARED is configured and only then disables the IRQ line while
testing.

This test is performed upon each open() of the UART device. Imagine two UARTs
share the same IRQ line: On is already opened and the IRQ is active. When the
second UART is opened, the IRQ line has to be disabled while performing IRQ
tests. Otherwise an IRQ might handler might be invoked, but the the IRQ itself
cannot be handled, because the corresponding handler isn't registered,
yet. That's because the 8250 code uses a chain-handler and invokes the
corresponding port's IRQ handling rountines himself.

Unfortunately this IRQF_SHARED flag isn't configured for UARTs probed via device
tree even if the IRQs are shared. This way, the actual and shared IRQ line isn't
disabled while performing tests and the kernel correctly detects a spurious
IRQ. So, adding this flag to the DT probe solves the issue.

Note: The UPF_SHARE_IRQ flag is configured unconditionally. Therefore, the
IRQF_SHARED flag can be set unconditionally as well.

Example stacktrace by performing echo 1 > /dev/ttyS2 on a non-patched system:

7678f4c20f serial: sh-sci: Add support for dynamic instances
On DT platforms, the sh-sci driver requires the presence of "serialN"
aliases in DT, from which instance IDs are derived. If a DT alias is
missing, the drivers fails to probe the corresponding serial port.

This becomes cumbersome when considering DT overlays, as currently
there is no upstream support for dynamically updating the /aliases node
in DT. Furthermore, even in the presence of such support, hardcoded
instance IDs in independent overlays are prone to conflicts.

Hence add support for dynamic instance IDs, to be used in the absence of
a DT alias. This makes serial ports behave similar to I2C and SPI
buses, which already support dynamic instances.

Ports in use are tracked using a simple bitmask of type unsigned long,
which is sufficient to handle all current hardware (max. 18 ports).
The maximum number of serial ports is still fixed, and configurable
through Kconfig. Range validation is done through both Kconfig and a
compile-time check.

Due to the fixed maximum number of serial ports, dynamic and static
instances share the same ID space. Static instances added later are
rejected when conflicting with dynamic instances registered earlier.

dd709e72cb earlycon: Use a pointer table to fix __earlycon_table stride
Commit 99492c39f3 ("earlycon: Fix __earlycon_table stride") tried to fix
__earlycon_table stride by forcing the earlycon_id struct alignment to 32
and asking the linker to 32-byte align the __earlycon_table symbol. This
fix was based on commit 07fca0e57f ("tracing: Properly align linker
defined symbols") which tried a similar fix for the tracing subsystem.

However, this fix doesn't quite work because there is no guarantee that
gcc will place structures packed into an array format. In fact, gcc 4.9
chooses to 64-byte align these structs by inserting additional padding
between the entries because it has no clue that they are supposed to be in
an array. If we are unlucky, the linker will assign symbol
"__earlycon_table" to a 32-byte aligned address which does not correspond
to the 64-byte aligned contents of section "__earlycon_table".

To address this same problem, the fix to the tracing system was
subsequently re-implemented using a more robust table of pointers approach
by commits:
3d56e331b6 ("tracing: Replace syscall_meta_data struct array with pointer array")
6549864629 ("tracepoints: Fix section alignment using pointer array")
e4a9ea5ee7 ("tracing: Replace trace_event struct array with pointer array")

Let's use this same "array of pointers to structs" approach for
EARLYCON_TABLE.

to the documentation the bit will remain active for 4 module clocks
until it is cleared (set to 1).

Hence the real register need to be read in case the cached register
indicates that the SRST bit is zero.

This bug lead to wrong baudrate because the baud rate register got
restored before reset completed in imx_flush_buffer.

6d215f83e5 serial: imx: warn user when using unsupported configuration
When using half-duplex mode (which disables receiver during txing)
the RTS signal cannot be driven low during transmission when using
i.MX UART RTS/CTS control. This seems to be a limitation of the
i.MX UART IP: The RTS (CTS_B) signal is controlled by the receiver.
When the receiver is disabled, the signal stays in UART logic idle
state which is high...

If SER_RS485_RTS_ON_SEND is used, RTS needs to be high active during
transmission. Since this is the default state of the RTS (CTS_B)
signal when the receiver is off, half-duplex mode in this
configuration works fine.

However, a low-active RTS signal (flag SER_RS485_RTS_ON_SEND not set)
cannot be generated when the receiver is turned off.

Print an error if the user selects this unsupported configuration
(both SER_RS485_RTS_ON_SEND and SER_RS485_RX_DURING_TX unset) and
configure the closest working configuration (set the
SER_RS485_RX_DURING_TX flag).

46c6975a1f serial: mvebu-uart: Fix local flags handling on termios update
Commit 68a0db1d7d reworked the baud rate selection, but also added
a (not so) subtle change in the way the local flags (c_lflag in the
termios structure) are handled, forcing the new flags to always be the
same as the old ones.

The reason for that particular change is both obscure and undocumented.
It also completely breaks userspace. Something as trivial as getty is
unusable:

<example>
	Debian GNU/Linux 9 sy-borg ttyMV0

	sy-borg login: root
	root
	[timeout]

	Debian GNU/Linux 9 sy-borg ttyMV0
</example>

which is quite obvious in retrospect: getty cannot get in control of
the echo mode, is stuck in canonical mode, and times out without ever
seeing anything valid. It also begs the question of how this change was
ever tested.

The fix is pretty obvious: stop messing with c_lflag, and the world
will be a happier place.

b2d89ad9c9 tty: n_gsm: Fix DLCI handling for ADM mode if debug & 2 is not set
At least on droid 4 with control channel in ADM mode, there is no response
to Modem Status Command (MSC). Currently gsmtty_modem_update() expects to
have data in dlci->modem_rx unless debug & 2 is set. This means that on
droid 4, things only work if debug & 2 is set.

Let's fix the issue by ignoring empty dlci->modem_rx for ADM mode. In
the AMD mode, CMD_MSC will never respond and gsm_process_modem() won't
get called to set dlci->modem_rx.

And according to ts_127010v140000p.pdf, MSC is only relevant if basic
option is chosen, so let's test for that too.

e9ec225479 tty: n_gsm: Fix long delays with control frame timeouts in ADM mode
Commit ea3d8465ab ("tty: n_gsm: Allow ADM response in addition to UA for
control dlci") added support for DLCI to stay in Asynchronous Disconnected
Mode (ADM). But we still get long delays waiting for commands to other
DLCI to complete:

--> 5) C: SABM(P)
Q> 0) C: UIH(F)
Q> 0) C: UIH(F)
Q> 0) C: UIH(F)
...

This happens because gsm_control_send() sets cretries timer to T2 that is
by default set to 34. This will cause resend for T2 times for the control
frame. In ADM mode, we will never get a response so the control frame, so
retries are just delaying all the commands.

Let's fix the issue by setting DLCI_MODE_ADM flag after detecting the ADM
mode for the control DLCI. Then we can use that in gsm_control_send() to
set retries to 1. This means the control frame will be sent once allowing
the other end at an opportunity to switch from ADM to ABM mode.

Note that retries will be decremented in gsm_control_retransmit() so
we don't want to set it to 0 here.

642e7fd233 Merge branch 'syscalls-next' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brodo/linux
Pull removal of in-kernel calls to syscalls from Dominik Brodowski:
"System calls are interaction points between userspace and the kernel.
Therefore, system call functions such as sys_xyzzy() or
compat_sys_xyzzy() should only be called from userspace via the
syscall table, but not from elsewhere in the kernel.

At least on 64-bit x86, it will likely be a hard requirement from
v4.17 onwards to not call system call functions in the kernel: It is
better to use use a different calling convention for system calls
there, where struct pt_regs is decoded on-the-fly in a syscall wrapper
which then hands processing over to the actual syscall function. This
means that only those parameters which are actually needed for a
specific syscall are passed on during syscall entry, instead of
filling in six CPU registers with random user space content all the
time (which may cause serious trouble down the call chain). Those
x86-specific patches will be pushed through the x86 tree in the near
  future.

Moreover, rules on how data may be accessed may differ between kernel
data and user data. This is another reason why calling sys_xyzzy() is
generally a bad idea, and -- at most -- acceptable in arch-specific
  code.

This patchset removes all in-kernel calls to syscall functions in the
kernel with the exception of arch/. On top of this, it cleans up the
three places where many syscalls are referenced or prototyped, namely
  kernel/sys_ni.c, include/linux/syscalls.h and include/linux/compat.h"

f5a8eb632b arch: remove obsolete architecture ports
This removes the entire architecture code for blackfin, cris, frv, m32r,
metag, mn10300, score, and tile, including the associated device drivers.

I have been working with the (former) maintainers for each one to ensure
that my interpretation was right and the code is definitely unused in
mainline kernels. Many had fond memories of working on the respective
ports to start with and getting them included in upstream, but also saw
no point in keeping the port alive without any users.

In the end, it seems that while the eight architectures are extremely
different, they all suffered the same fate: There was one company
in charge of an SoC line, a CPU microarchitecture and a software
ecosystem, which was more costly than licensing newer off-the-shelf
CPU cores from a third party (typically ARM, MIPS, or RISC-V). It seems
that all the SoC product lines are still around, but have not used the
custom CPU architectures for several years at this point. In contrast,
CPU instruction sets that remain popular and have actively maintained
kernel ports tend to all be used across multiple licensees.

The removal came out of a discussion that is now documented at
https://lwn.net/Articles/748074/. Unlike the original plans, I'm not
marking any ports as deprecated but remove them all at once after I made
sure that they are all unused. Some architectures (notably tile, mn10300,
and blackfin) are still being shipped in products with old kernels,
but those products will never be updated to newer kernel releases.

After this series, we still have a few architectures without mainline
 gcc support:

 - unicore32 and hexagon both have very outdated gcc releases, but the
maintainers promised to work on providing something newer. At least
in case of hexagon, this will only be llvm, not gcc.

 - openrisc, risc-v and nds32 are still in the process of finishing their
support or getting it added to mainline gcc in the first place.
They all have patched gcc-7.3 ports that work to some degree, but
complete upstream support won't happen before gcc-8.1. Csky posted
their first kernel patch set last week, their situation will be similar.

66f4e88cc6 x86/ioport: add ksys_ioperm() helper; remove in-kernel calls to sys_ioperm()
Using this helper allows us to avoid the in-kernel calls to the

uses the same calling convention as sys_sync().

This patch is part of a series which removes in-kernel calls to syscalls.
On this basis, the syscall entry path can be streamlined. For details, see

579f1a2883 s390/setup : enable display support for KVM guest
The S390 architecture does not support any graphics hardware,
but with the latest support for Virtio GPU in Linux and Virtio
GPU emulation in QEMU, it's possible to enable graphics for
S390 using the Virtio GPU device.

To enable display we need to enable the Linux Virtual Terminal (VT)
layer for S390. But the VT subsystem initializes quite early
at boot so we need a dummy console driver till the Virtio GPU
driver is initialized and we can run the framebuffer console.

The framebuffer console over a Virtio GPU device can be run
in combination with the serial SCLP console (default on S390).
The SCLP console can still be accessed by management applications
(eg: via Libvirt's virsh console).

65d9982d7e vt: change SGR 21 to follow the standards
ECMA-48 [1] (aka ISO 6429) has defined SGR 21 as "doubly underlined"
since at least March 1984. The Linux kernel has treated it as SGR 22
"normal intensity" since it was added in Linux-0.96b in June 1992.
Before that, it was simply ignored. Other terminal emulators have
either ignored it, or treat it as double underline now. xterm for
example added support in its 304 release (May 2014) [2] where it was
previously ignoring it.

Changing this behavior shouldn't be an issue:
- It isn't a named capability in ncurses's terminfo database, so no
script is using libtinfo/libcurses to look this up, or using tput
to query & output the right sequence.
- Any script assuming SGR 21 will reset intensity in all terminals
already do not work correctly on non-Linux VTs (including running
  under screen/tmux/etc...).
- If someone has written a script that only runs in the Linux VT, and
they're using SGR 21 (instead of SGR 22), the output should still
  be readable.

imo it's important to change this as the Linux VT's non-conformance
is sometimes used as an argument for other terminal emulators to not
implement SGR 21 at all, or do so incorrectly.

The RISC-V ISA defines a simple console that is availiable via SBI calls

it's also possible to use this as the system console when there isn't a

This patch adds support for the RISC-V SBI console via the HVC

which results in early boot messages appearing twice over the SBI

42afa627c3 serial: imx: drop check for enabled dma in .startup
imx_shutdown() calls imx_disable_dma if .dma_is_enabled. So after
imx_shudown() completes, .dma_is_enabled is zero. For this reason
.dma_is_enabled is also zero when imx_startup() is called. So the check
for this variable being zero can be dropped.

4238c00bb1 serial: imx: simplify tracking of dma being initialized
The .dma_is_inited member is only set to a value != 0 when the port's
startup function calls imx_uart_dma_init(). On shutdown of the port
imx_uart_dma_exit is called which sets the value back to 0. So
.dma_is_inited is always 0 when imx_startup() is called (assuming
.startup() and .shutdown() are correctly balanced) and the check for
!sport->dma_is_inited can go away.

This allows to replace .dma_is_inited by a variable local to
imx_startup.

Handling an irq that isn't enabled can have some undesired side effects.
Some of these are mentioned in the newly introduced code comment. Some
of the irq sources already had their handling right, some don't. Handle
them all in the same consistent way.

The change for USR1_RRDY and USR1_AGTIM drops the check for
dma_is_enabled. This is correct as UCR1_RRDYEN and UCR2_ATEN are always
off if dma is enabled.
