5de4a473bd netpoll queue cleanup
The beast had a long and not very happy history. At one
point, a friend (netdump) had asked that he open up a little.
Well, the friend was long gone now, and the beast had
this dangling piece hanging (netpoll_queue).

It wasn't hard to stitch the netpoll_queue back in
where it belonged and make everything tidy.

2bdfe0baec netpoll retry cleanup
The netpoll beast was still not happy. If the beast got
clogged pipes, it tended to stare blankly off in space
for a long time.

The problem couldn't be completely fixed because the
beast talked with irq's disabled. But it could be made
less painful and shorter.

6c43ff18f9 netpoll deferred transmit path
When the netpoll beast got busy, he tended to babble.
Instead of talking out of his large mouth as normal,
he tended to try to snort out other orifices. This lead
to words (skbs) ending up in odd places (like NIT) that
he did not intend.

The normal way of talking wouldn't work, but he could
at least change to using the same tone all the time.

b6cd27ed33 netpoll per device txq
When the netpoll beast got really busy, it tended to clog

93ec2c723e netpoll info leak
After looking harder, Steve noticed that the netpoll
beast leaked a little every time it shutdown for a nap.
Not a big leak, but a nuisance kind of thing.

He took out his refcount duct tape and patched the
leak. It was overkill since there was already other
locking in that area, but it looked clean and wouldn't
attract fleas.

a1bcfacd05 netpoll: private skb pool (rev3)
It was a dark and stormy night when Steve first saw the
netpoll beast. The beast was odd, and misshapen but not
extremely ugly.

"Let me take off one of your warts" he said. This wart
is where you tried to make an skb list yourself. If the
beast had ever run out of memory, he would have stupefied
himself unnecessarily.

The first try was painful, so he tried again till the bleeding
stopped. And again, and again...

72a3effaf6 [NET]: Size listen hash tables using backlog hint
We currently allocate a fixed size (TCP_SYNQ_HSIZE=512) slots hash table for
each LISTEN socket, regardless of various parameters (listen backlog for
example)

On x86_64, this means order-1 allocations (might fail), even for 'small'
sockets, expecting few connections. On the contrary, a huge server wanting a
backlog of 50000 is slowed down a bit because of this fixed limit.

This patch makes the sizing of listen hash table a dynamic parameter,
depending of :
- net.core.somaxconn tunable (default is 128)
- net.ipv4.tcp_max_syn_backlog tunable (default : 256, 1024 or 128)
- backlog value given by user application (2nd parameter of listen())

For large allocations (bigger than PAGE_SIZE), we use vmalloc() instead of
kmalloc().

We still limit memory allocation with the two existing tunables (somaxconn &
tcp_max_syn_backlog). So for standard setups, this patch actually reduce RAM
usage.

65f27f3844 WorkStruct: Pass the work_struct pointer instead of context data
Pass the work_struct pointer to the work function rather than context data.
The work function can use container_of() to work out the data.

For the cases where the container of the work_struct may go away the moment the
pending bit is cleared, it is made possible to defer the release of the
structure by deferring the clearing of the pending bit.

To make this work, an extra flag is introduced into the management side of the
work_struct. This governs auto-release of the structure upon execution.

Ordinarily, the work queue executor would release the work_struct for further
scheduling or deallocation by clearing the pending bit prior to jumping to the
work function. This means that, unless the driver makes some guarantee itself
that the work_struct won't go away, the work function may not access anything
else in the work_struct or its container lest they be deallocated.. This is a
problem if the auxiliary data is taken away (as done by the last patch).

However, if the pending bit is *not* cleared before jumping to the work
function, then the work function *may* access the work_struct and its container
with no problems. But then the work function must itself release the
work_struct by calling work_release().

In most cases, automatic release is fine, so this is the default. Special
initiators exist for the non-auto-release case (ending in _NAR).

Separate delayable work items from non-delayable work items be splitting them
into a separate structure (delayed_work), which incorporates a work_struct and
the timer_list removed from work_struct.

The work_struct struct is huge, and this limits it's usefulness. On a 64-bit
architecture it's nearly 100 bytes in size. This reduces that by half for the
non-delayable type of event.

c8884edd07 [NET]: Fix segmentation of linear packets
skb_segment fails to segment linear packets correctly because it
tries to write all linear parts of the original skb into each
segment. This will always panic as each segment only contains
enough space for one MSS.

This was not detected earlier because linear packets should be
rare for GSO. In fact it still remains to be seen what exactly
created the linear packets that triggered this bug. Basically
the only time this should happen is if someone enables GSO

134b0fc544 IPsec: propagate security module errors up from flow_cache_lookup
When a security module is loaded (in this case, SELinux), the
security_xfrm_policy_lookup() hook can return an access denied permission
(or other error). We were not handling that correctly, and in fact
inverting the return logic and propagating a false "ok" back up to
xfrm_lookup(), which then allowed packets to pass as if they were not
associated with an xfrm policy.

The way I was seeing the problem was when connecting via IPsec to a
confined service on an SELinux box (vsftpd), which did not have the
appropriate SELinux policy permissions to send packets via IPsec.

The first SYNACK would be blocked, because of an uncached lookup via
flow_cache_lookup(), which would fail to resolve an xfrm policy because
the SELinux policy is checked at that point via the resolver.

However, retransmitted SYNACKs would then find a cached flow entry when
calling into flow_cache_lookup() with a null xfrm policy, which is
interpreted by xfrm_lookup() as the packet not having any associated
policy and similarly to the first case, allowing it to pass without
transformation.

The solution presented here is to first ensure that errno values are
correctly propagated all the way back up through the various call chains
from security_xfrm_policy_lookup(), and handled correctly.

Then, flow_cache_lookup() is modified, so that if the policy resolver
fails (typically a permission denied via the security module), the flow
cache entry is killed rather than having a null policy assigned (which
indicates that the packet can pass freely). This also forces any future
lookups for the same flow to consult the security module (e.g. SELinux)
for current security policy (rather than, say, caching the error on the
flow cache entry).

85670cc1fa [NET_SCHED]: Fix fallout from dev->qdisc RCU change
The move of qdisc destruction to a rcu callback broke locking in the
entire qdisc layer by invalidating previously valid assumptions about
the context in which changes to the qdisc tree occur.

The two assumptions were:

- since changes only happen in process context, read_lock doesn't need
  bottem half protection. Now invalid since destruction of inner qdiscs,
  classifiers, actions and estimators happens in the RCU callback unless
  they're manually deleted, resulting in dead-locks when read_lock in
  process context is interrupted by write_lock_bh in bottem half context.

- since changes only happen under the RTNL, no additional locking is
  necessary for data not used during packet processing (f.e. u32_list).
  Again, since destruction now happens in the RCU callback, this assumption
  is not valid anymore, causing races while using this data, which can
  result in corruption or use-after-free.

Instead of "fixing" this by disabling bottem halfs everywhere and adding
new locks/refcounting, this patch makes these assumptions valid again by
moving destruction back to process context. Since only the dev->qdisc
pointer is protected by RCU, but ->enqueue and the qdisc tree are still
protected by dev->qdisc_lock, destruction of the tree can be performed
immediately and only the final free needs to happen in the rcu callback
to make sure dev_queue_xmit doesn't access already freed memory.

baef186519 [PATCH] WE-21 support (core API)
This is version 21 of the Wireless Extensions. Changelog :
	o finishes migrating the ESSID API (remove the +1)
	o netdev->get_wireless_stats is no more
	o long/short retry

This is a redacted version of a patch originally submitted by Jean
Tourrilhes. I removed most of the additions, in order to minimize
future support requirements for nl80211 (or other WE successor).

add_timer(&dst_gc_timer) <--- BUG because timer is in list already.

Found during OpenVZ internal testing.

At first we thought that it is OpenVZ specific as we
added dst_run_gc(0) call in dst_dev_event(),
but as Alexey pointed to me it is possible to trigger
this condition in mainstream kernel.

F.e. timer has fired on CPU2, but the handler was preeempted
by an irq before dst_lock is tried.
Meanwhile, someone on CPU1 adds an entry to gc list and
starts the timer.
If CPU2 was preempted long enough, this timer can expire
simultaneously with resuming timer handler on CPU1, arriving
exactly to the situation described.

Drivers expect to be able to call wireless_send_event in arbitrary
contexts. On the other hand, netlink really doesn't like being
invoked in an IRQ context. So we need to postpone the sending of
netlink skb's to a tasklet.

Remove the lock_cpu_hotplug()/unlock_cpu_hotplug() calls from
net_dma_rebalance

The lock_cpu_hotplug()/unlock_cpu_hotplug() sequence in
net_dma_rebalance is both incorrect (as pointed out by David Miller)
because lock_cpu_hotplug() may sleep while the net_dma_event_lock
spinlock is held, and unnecessary (as pointed out by Andrew Morton) as
spin_lock() disables preemption which protects from CPU hotplug

What we have now is infinitely better than the past,

27b437c8b7 [NET]: Update frag_list in pskb_trim
When pskb_trim has to defer to ___pksb_trim to trim the frag_list part of
the packet, the frag_list is not updated to reflect the trimming. This
will usually work fine until you hit something that uses the packet length
or tail from the frag_list.

Examples include esp_output and ip_fragment.

Another problem caused by this is that you can end up with a linear packet
with a frag_list attached.

It is possible to get away with this if we audit everything to make sure
that they always consult skb->len before going down onto frag_list. In
fact we can do the samething for the paged part as well to avoid copying
the data area of the skb. For now though, let's do the conservative fix
and update frag_list.

a5b5bb9a05 [PATCH] lockdep: annotate sk_locks
Teach sk_lock semantics to the lock validator. In the softirq path the
slock has mutex_trylock()+mutex_unlock() semantics, in the process context
sock_lock() case it has mutex_lock()/mutex_unlock() semantics.

Thus we treat sock_owned_by_user() flagged areas as an exclusion area too,
not just those areas covered by a held sk_lock.slock.

877ce7c1b3 [AF_UNIX]: Datagram getpeersec
This patch implements an API whereby an application can determine the
label of its peer's Unix datagram sockets via the auxiliary data mechanism of
recvmsg.

Patch purpose:

This patch enables a security-aware application to retrieve the
security context of the peer of a Unix datagram socket. The application
can then use this security context to determine the security context for
processing on behalf of the peer who sent the packet.

Patch design and implementation:

The design and implementation is very similar to the UDP case for INET
sockets. Basically we build upon the existing Unix domain socket API for
retrieving user credentials. Linux offers the API for obtaining user
credentials via ancillary messages (i.e., out of band/control messages
that are bundled together with a normal message). To retrieve the security
context, the application first indicates to the kernel such desire by
setting the SO_PASSSEC option via getsockopt. Then the application
retrieves the security context using the auxiliary data mechanism.

An example server application for Unix datagram socket should look like this:

toggle = 1;
toggle_len = sizeof(toggle);

setsockopt(sockfd, SOL_SOCKET, SO_PASSSEC, &toggle, &toggle_len);
recvmsg(sockfd, &msg_hdr, 0);
if (msg_hdr.msg_controllen > sizeof(struct cmsghdr)) {
    cmsg_hdr = CMSG_FIRSTHDR(&msg_hdr);
    if (cmsg_hdr->cmsg_len <= CMSG_LEN(sizeof(scontext)) &&
        cmsg_hdr->cmsg_level == SOL_SOCKET &&
        cmsg_hdr->cmsg_type == SCM_SECURITY) {
        memcpy(&scontext, CMSG_DATA(cmsg_hdr), sizeof(scontext));
    }
}

sock_setsockopt is enhanced with a new socket option SOCK_PASSSEC to allow
a server socket to receive security context of the peer.

Testing:

We have tested the patch by setting up Unix datagram client and server
applications. We verified that the server can retrieve the security context
using the auxiliary data mechanism of recvmsg.

576a30eb64 [NET]: Added GSO header verification
When GSO packets come from an untrusted source (e.g., a Xen guest domain),
we need to verify the header integrity before passing it to the hardware.

Since the first step in GSO is to verify the header, we can reuse that
code by adding a new bit to gso_type: SKB_GSO_DODGY. Packets with this
bit set can only be fed directly to devices with the corresponding bit
NETIF_F_GSO_ROBUST. If the device doesn't have that bit, then the skb
is fed to the GSO engine which will allow the packet to be sent to the
hardware if it passes the header check.

This patch changes the sg flag to a full features flag. The same method
can be used to implement TSO ECN support. We simply have to mark packets
with CWR set with SKB_GSO_ECN so that only hardware with a corresponding
NETIF_F_TSO_ECN can accept them. The GSO engine can either fully segment
the packet, or segment the first MTU and pass the rest to the hardware for
further segmentation.

068c6e98bc [NET] netpoll: break recursive loop in netpoll rx path
The netpoll system currently has a rx to tx path via:

netpoll_rx
 __netpoll_rx

This rx->tx loop places network drivers at risk of inadvertently causing a
deadlock or BUG halt by recursively trying to acquire a spinlock that is
used in both their rx and tx paths (this problem was origionally reported
to me in the 3c59x driver, which shares a spinlock between the
boomerang_interrupt and boomerang_start_xmit routines).

This patch breaks this loop, by queueing arp frames, so that they can be
responded to after all receive operations have been completed. Tested by
myself and the reported with successful results.

7967168cef [NET]: Merge TSO/UFO fields in sk_buff
Having separate fields in sk_buff for TSO/UFO (tso_size/ufo_size) is not
going to scale if we add any more segmentation methods (e.g., DCCP). So
let's merge them.

They were used to tell the protocol of a packet. This function has been
subsumed by the new gso_type field. This is essentially a set of netdev
feature bits (shifted by 16 bits) that are required to process a specific
skb. As such it's easy to tell whether a given device can process a GSO
skb: you just have to and the gso_type field and the netdev's features
field.

I've made gso_type a conjunction. The idea is that you have a base type
(e.g., SKB_GSO_TCPV4) that can be modified further to support new features.
For example, if we add a hardware TSO type that supports ECN, they would
declare NETIF_F_TSO | NETIF_F_TSO_ECN. All TSO packets with CWR set would
have a gso_type of SKB_GSO_TCPV4 | SKB_GSO_TCPV4_ECN while all other TSO
packets would be SKB_GSO_TCPV4. This means that only the CWR packets need
to be emulated in software.

d4828d85d1 [NET]: Prevent transmission after dev_deactivate
The dev_deactivate function has bit-rotted since the introduction of
lockless drivers. In particular, the spin_unlock_wait call at the end
has no effect on the xmit routine of lockless drivers.

With a little bit of work, we can make it much more useful by providing
the guarantee that when it returns, no more calls to the xmit routine
of the underlying driver will be made.

The idea is simple. There are two entry points in to the xmit routine.
The first comes from dev_queue_xmit. That one is easily stopped by
using synchronize_rcu. This works because we set the qdisc to noop_qdisc
before the synchronize_rcu call. That in turn causes all subsequent
packets sent to dev_queue_xmit to be dropped. The synchronize_rcu call
also ensures all outstanding calls leave their critical section.

The other entry point is from qdisc_run. Since we now have a bit that
indicates whether it's running, all we have to do is to wait until the
bit is off.

I've removed the loop to wait for __LINK_STATE_SCHED to clear. This is
useless because netif_wake_queue can cause it to be set again. It is
also harmless because we've disarmed qdisc_run.

I've also removed the spin_unlock_wait on xmit_lock because its only
purpose of making sure that all outstanding xmit_lock holders have
exited is also given by dev_watchdog_down.

the existing one is not shared. More importantly, our hard_start_xmit
interface does not allow a new skb to be allocated since that breaks
requeueing.

This patch uses pskb_expand_head to expand the existing skb and linearize
it if needed. Actually, someone should sift through every instance of
skb_pad on a non-linear skb as they do not fit the reasons why this was
originally created.

Incidentally, this fixes a minor bug when the skb is cloned (tcpdump,
TCP, etc.). As it is skb_pad will simply write over a cloned skb. Because
of the position of the write it is unlikely to cause problems but still
it's best if we don't do it.

8648b3053b [NET]: Add NETIF_F_GEN_CSUM and NETIF_F_ALL_CSUM
The current stack treats NETIF_F_HW_CSUM and NETIF_F_NO_CSUM
identically so we test for them in quite a few places. For the sake
of brevity, I'm adding the macro NETIF_F_GEN_CSUM for these two. We
also test the disjunct of NETIF_F_IP_CSUM and the other two in various
places, for that purpose I've added NETIF_F_ALL_CSUM.

364c6badde [NET]: Clean up skb_linearize
The linearisation operation doesn't need to be super-optimised. So we can
replace __skb_linearize with __pskb_pull_tail which does the same thing but
is more general.

Also, most users of skb_linearize end up testing whether the skb is linear
or not so it helps to make skb_linearize do just that.

Some callers of skb_linearize also use it to copy cloned data, so it's
useful to have a new function skb_linearize_cow to copy the data if it's
either non-linear or cloned.

Last but not least, I've removed the gfp argument since nobody uses it
anymore. If it's ever needed we can easily add it back.

932ff279a4 [NET]: Add netif_tx_lock
Various drivers use xmit_lock internally to synchronise with their
transmission routines. They do so without setting xmit_lock_owner.
This is fine as long as netpoll is not in use.

With netpoll it is possible for deadlocks to occur if xmit_lock_owner
isn't set. This is because if a printk occurs while xmit_lock is held
and xmit_lock_owner is not set can cause netpoll to attempt to take
xmit_lock recursively.

While it is possible to resolve this by getting netpoll to use
trylock, it is suboptimal because netpoll's sole objective is to
maximise the chance of getting the printk out on the wire. So
delaying or dropping the message is to be avoided as much as possible.

So the only alternative is to always set xmit_lock_owner. The
following patch does this by introducing the netif_tx_lock family of
functions that take care of setting/unsetting xmit_lock_owner.

I renamed xmit_lock to _xmit_lock to indicate that it should not be
used directly. I didn't provide irq versions of the netif_tx_lock
functions since xmit_lock is meant to be a BH-disabling lock.

This is pretty much a straight text substitution except for a small
bug fix in winbond. It currently uses
netif_stop_queue/spin_unlock_wait to stop transmission. This is
unsafe as an IRQ can potentially wake up the queue. So it is safer to
use netif_tx_disable.

The hamradio bits used spin_lock_irq but it is unnecessary as
xmit_lock must never be taken in an IRQ handler.
