55da80059d perf evlist: Pass third argument to ioctl explicitly
The ioctl on perf event fd wants 3 arguments but we only passed 2. As
the only user of the functions is perf record and it calls them for
every event (regardless of group setting), just pass 0 for now.

79695e1bb6 perf stat: Initialize default events wrt exclude_{guest,host}
When no event is specified the tools use perf_evlist__add_default(), that will
call event_attr_init to initialize the KVM exclusion bits.

When the change was made to the tools so that by default guest samples would be
excluded, the changes were made just to the parsing routines and to
perf_evlist__add_default(), not to perf_evlist__add_attrs, that is used so far
just by perf stat to add multiple events, according to the level of detail
specified.

Recently the tools were changed to reconstruct the event name from all the
details in perf_event_attr, not just from .type and .config, but taking into
account all the feature bits (.exclude_{guest,host,user,kernel,etc},
.precise_ip, etc).

That is when we noticed that the default for perf stat wasn't the one for the
rest of the tools, i.e. the .exclude_guest bit wasn't being set.

I.e. the default, that doesn't call event_attr_init was showing the :HG
modifier:

Fix it by introducing a perf_evlist__add_default_attrs method that will call
evlist_attr_init in all the perf_event_attr entries before adding the events.

d1cb9fce92 perf target: Add uses_mmap field
If perf doesn't mmap on event (like perf stat), it should not create
per-task-per-cpu events. So just use a dummy cpu map to create a
per-task event for this case.

879d77d0cb Revert 'perf evlist: Fix creation of cpu map'
The commit 55261f4670 ("perf evlist: Fix creation of cpu map") changed
to create a per-task event when no cpu target is specified. However it
caused a problem since perf-task do not allow event inheritance due to
scalability issues so that the result will contain samples only from
parent, not from its children.

So we should use perf-task-per-cpu events anyway to get the right
result. Revert it.

aa22dd4990 perf target: Rename functions to avoid double negation
Rename perf_target__no_{cpu,task} to perf_target__has_{cpu,task} because
it's more intuitive and easy to parse (for human beings) when used with
negation.

The names are came out from David Ahern.  It is intended to be a
mechanical substitution without any functional change.

The perf_target__none remains unchanged since I couldn't find a right
name and it is hardly used with negation.

55261f4670 perf evlist: Fix creation of cpu map
Currently, 'perf record -- sleep 1' creates a cpu map for all online
cpus since it turns out calling cpu_map__new(NULL). Fix it.

Also it is guaranteed that cpu_list is NULL if PID/TID is given by
calling perf_target__validate(), so we can make the conditional bit
simpler.

This also fixes perf test 7 (Validate) failure on my 6 core machine:

  $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/online
  0-11
  $ ./perf test -v 7
   7: Validate PERF_RECORD_* events & perf_sample fields:
  --- start ---
  perf_evlist__mmap: Operation not permitted
  ---- end ----

5090c6aea8 perf tools: Do not disable members of group event
When event group is enabled for forked task (i.e. no target task/cpu
was specified) all events were disabled and marked ->enable_on_exec.
However they wouldn't be counted at all since only group leader will
be enabled on exec actually.

In contrast to perf stat, perf record doesn't have a real problem
as it enables all the event before proceeding. But it needs to be
fixed anyway IMHO.

41c21a6830 perf evlist: Restore original errno after open failed
If perf_evsel__open() failed, the errno was set and returned properly.

However since the perf_evlist__open() called close() on fd's for all of
evsel x cpu x thread after the failure, the errno was overridden by
other code (EBADF). So the caller of the function ended up seeing
different error message and getting confused.

Fit it by restoring original return value. Because one of caller of the
function is in the python extension, and it uses system errno
internally, it'd be better restoring the original value rather than
using the return value of the function directly, IMHO (i.e. I'm not a
python expert :)

30e68bcc67 perf evlist: Return first evsel for non-sample event on old kernel
On old kernels that don't support sample_id_all feature,
perf_evlist__id2evsel() returns NULL for non-sampling events.

This breaks perf top when multiple events are given on command line. Fix
it by using first evsel in the evlist. This will also prevent getting
the same (potential) problem in such new tool/ old kernel combo.

0d37aa34f8 perf tools: Introduce per user view
The new --uid command line option will show only the tasks for a given
user, using the proc interface to figure out the existing tasks.

Kernel work is needed to close races at startup, but this should already
be useful in many use cases.

301b195db1 perf evlist: Fix errno value reporting on failed mmap
On failure, perf_evlist__mmap_per_{cpu,thread} will try to munmap()
every map that doesn't have a NULL base. This will fail with EINVAL if
one of them has base == MAP_FAILED, clobbering errno, so that
perf_evlist__map will return EINVAL on any failure regardless of the
root cause.

Fix this by resetting failed maps to a NULL base.

806fb63007 perf evlist: Always do automatic allocation of pollfd and mmap structures
At first tools were required to do that, but while writing the python
bindings to simplify the API I made them auto-allocate when needed.

This just makes record, stat and top use that auto allocation,
simplifying them a bit.

Since we already ask for PERF_SAMPLE_ID and use it to quickly find the
associated evsel, add handler func + data to struct perf_evsel to avoid
using chains of if(strcmp(event_name)) and also to avoid all the linear
list searches via trace_event_find.

727ab04edb perf evlist: Fix grouping of multiple events
The __perf_evsel__open routing was grouping just the threads for that
specific events per cpu when we want to group all threads in all events
to the first fd opened on that cpu.

So pass the xyarray with the first event, where the other events will be
able to get that first per cpu fd.

At some point top and record will switch to using perf_evlist__open that
takes care of this detail and probably will also handle the fallback
from hw to soft counters, etc.

764e16a30a perf record: Create events initially disabled and enable after init
perf-record currently creates events enabled. When doing a system wide
collection (-a arg) this causes data collection for perf's
initialization activities -- eg., perf_event__synthesize_threads().

For some events (e.g., context switch S/W event or tracepoints like
syscalls) perf's initialization causes a lot of events to be captured
frequently generating "Check IO/CPU overload!" warnings on larger
systems (e.g., 2 socket, quad core, hyperthreading).

perf's initialization phase can be skipped by creating events
disabled and then enabling them once the initialization is done.

cc2d86b04d perf evlist: Fix missing event name init for default event
When no event is given to perf record, perf top, a default event is
initialized (cycles). However, perf_evlist__add_default() was not
setting the symbolic name for the event. Perf top worked simply because
it was reconstructing the name from the event code. But it should not
have to do this. This patch initializes the evsel->name field properly.

This second version improves the code flow on the non error path.

c2a70653af perf evlist: Don't die if sample_{id_all|type} is invalid
Fixes two more cases where the python binding would not load:

. Not finding die(), which it shouldn't anyway, not good to just stop the
  world because some particular perf.data file is invalid, just propagate
  the error to the caller.

. Not finding perf_sample_size: fix it by moving it from event.c to evsel,
  where it belongs, as most cases are moving to operate on an evsel object.o

The PERF_EVENT_IOC_SET_OUTPUT ioctl was returning -EINVAL when using
--pid when monitoring multithreaded apps, as we can only share a ring
buffer for events on the same thread if not doing per cpu.

Fix it by using per thread ring buffers.

5d2cd90922 perf evsel: Fix use of inherit
perf stat doesn't mmap and its perfectly fine for it to use task-bound
counters with inheritance.

So set the attr.inherit on the caller and leave the syscall itself to
validate it.

When the mmap fails perf_evlist__mmap will just emit a warning if this
is the failure reason.

0a10247914 perf: Set filters before mmaping events
We currently set the filters after we mmap the events, this is a
race that let undesired events record themselves in the buffer before
we had the time to set the filters.

So set the filters before they can be recorded. That also librarizes
the filters setting so that filtering can be done more easily
from other tools than perf record later.

7e2ed09753 perf evlist: Store pointer to the cpu and thread maps
So that we don't have to pass it around to the several methods that
needs it, simplifying usage.

There is one case where we don't have the thread/cpu map in advance,
which is in the parsing routines used by top, stat, record, that we have
to wait till all options are parsed to know if a cpu or thread list was
passed to then create those maps.

For that case consolidate the cpu and thread map creation via
perf_evlist__create_maps() out of the code in top and record, while also
providing a perf_evlist__set_maps() for cases where multiple evlists
share maps or for when maps that represent CPU sockets, for instance,
get crafted out of topology information or subsets of threads in a
particular application are to be monitored, providing more granularity
in specifying which cpus and threads to monitor.

f8a9530939 perf evlist: Move evlist methods to evlist.c
They were on evsel.c because they came from refactoring existing evsel
methods, so, to make reviewing the changes easier, I kept it there, now
its a plain move.

7bb41152b9 perf evlist: Support non overwrite mode in perf_evlist__read_on_cpu
I.e. stash the overwrite mode in struct perf_evlist and act accordingly
in perf_evlist__read_on_cpu, not checking for overwrites and touching
the tail after consuming one event, like perf record does, for instance.

ef1d1af28c perf evsel: Introduce perf_evsel__{in,ex}it
Out of the {con,des}structor, as in interpreted language bindings we will
need to go back from the wrapper object to the real thing. In that case
using container_of will save us to have an extra pointer in the perf_evsel
struct.

70db7533ca perf evlist: Move the mmap array from perf_evsel
Adopting the new model used in 'perf record', where we don't have a map
per thread per cpu, instead we have an mmap per cpu, established on the
first fd for that cpu and ask the kernel using the
PERF_EVENT_IOC_SET_OUTPUT ioctl to send events for the other fds on that
cpu for the one with the mmap.

The methods moved from perf_evsel to perf_evlist, but for easing review
they were modified in place, in evsel.c, the next patch will move the
migrated methods to evlist.c.

With this 'perf top' now uses the same mmap model used by 'perf record'
and the next patches will make 'perf record' use these new routines,
establishing a common codebase for both tools.
