328008a72d x86/power: Fix swsusp_arch_resume prototype
The declaration for swsusp_arch_resume marks it as 'asmlinkage', but the
definition in x86-32 does not, and it fails to include the header with the
declaration. This leads to a warning when building with
link-time-optimizations:

kernel/power/power.h:108:23: error: type of 'swsusp_arch_resume' does not match original declaration [-Werror=lto-type-mismatch]
 extern asmlinkage int swsusp_arch_resume(void);
                       ^
arch/x86/power/hibernate_32.c:148:0: note: 'swsusp_arch_resume' was previously declared here
 int swsusp_arch_resume(void)

This moves the declaration into a globally visible header file and fixes up
both x86 definitions to match it.

0a4b6e2f80 Merge branch 'for-4.16/block' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block
Pull block updates from Jens Axboe:
"This is the main pull request for block IO related changes for the
4.16 kernel. Nothing major in this pull request, but a good amount of
improvements and fixes all over the map. This contains:

   - BFQ improvements, fixes, and cleanups from Angelo, Chiara, and
     Paolo.

   - Support for SMR zones for deadline and mq-deadline from Damien and
     Christoph.

   - Set of fixes for bcache by way of Michael Lyle, including fixes
from himself, Kent, Rui, Tang, and Coly.

   - Series from Matias for lightnvm with fixes from Hans Holmberg,
Javier, and Matias. Mostly centered around pblk, and the removing
rrpc 1.2 in preparation for supporting 2.0.

   - A couple of NVMe pull requests from Christoph. Nothing major in
here, just fixes and cleanups, and support for command tracing from
     Johannes.

   - Support for blk-throttle for tracking reads and writes separately.
From Joseph Qi. A few cleanups/fixes also for blk-throttle from
     Weiping.

   - Series from Mike Snitzer that enables dm to register its queue more
logically, something that's alwways been problematic on dm since
     it's a stacked device.

   - Series from Ming cleaning up some of the bio accessor use, in
     preparation for supporting multipage bvecs.

   - Various fixes from Ming closing up holes around queue mapping and
     quiescing.

   - BSD partition fix from Richard Narron, fixing a problem where we
can't mount newer (10/11) FreeBSD partitions.

   - Series from Tejun reworking blk-mq timeout handling. The previous
scheme relied on atomic bits, but it had races where we would think
a request had timed out if it to reused at the wrong time.

   - null_blk now supports faking timeouts, to enable us to better
exercise and test that functionality separately. From me.

   - Kill the separate atomic poll bit in the request struct. After
this, we don't use the atomic bits on blk-mq anymore at all. From
     me.

   - sgl_alloc/free helpers from Bart.

   - Heavily contended tag case scalability improvement from me.

   - Various little fixes and cleanups from Arnd, Bart, Corentin,
     Douglas, Eryu, Goldwyn, and myself"

bdbc98abb3 PM: hibernate: Do not subtract NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size()
s2disk/s2both may fail unnecessarily and erratically if NR_FILE_MAPPED
is high - for instance when using VMs with VirtualBox and perhaps VMware
Player. In those situations s2disk becomes unreliable and therefore
unusable.

A typical scenario is: user issues a s2disk and it fails. User issues
a second s2disk immediately after that and it succeeds. And user
wonders why.

The problem is caused by minimum_image_size() in snapshot.c. The
value it returns is roughly 100% too high because NR_FILE_MAPPED is
subtracted in its calculation. Eventually the number of preallocated
image pages is falsely too low.

This doesn't matter as long as NR_FILE_MAPPED-values are in a normal
range or in 32bit-environments as the code allows for allocation of
additional pages from highmem.

But with the high values generated by VirtualBox-VMs (a 2-GB-VM causes
NR_FILE_MAPPED go up by 2 GB) it may lead to failure in 64bit-systems.

Not subtracting NR_FILE_MAPPED in minimum_image_size() solves the
problem.

I've done at least hundreds of successful s2both/s2disk now on an
x86_64 system (with and without VirtualBox) which gives me some
confidence that this is right. It has turned s2disk/s2both from
unusable into 100% reliable.

453f85d43f mm: remove __GFP_COLD
As the page free path makes no distinction between cache hot and cold
pages, there is no real useful ordering of pages in the free list that
allocation requests can take advantage of. Juding from the users of
__GFP_COLD, it is likely that a number of them are the result of copying
other sites instead of actually measuring the impact. Remove the
__GFP_COLD parameter which simplifies a number of paths in the page
allocator.

This is potentially controversial but bear in mind that the size of the
per-cpu pagelists versus modern cache sizes means that the whole per-cpu
list can often fit in the L3 cache. Hence, there is only a potential
benefit for microbenchmarks that alloc/free pages in a tight loop. It's
even worse when THP is taken into account which has little or no chance
of getting a cache-hot page as the per-cpu list is bypassed and the
zeroing of multiple pages will thrash the cache anyway.

The truncate microbenchmarks are not shown as this patch affects the
allocation path and not the free path. A page fault microbenchmark was
tested but it showed no sigificant difference which is not surprising
given that the __GFP_COLD branches are a miniscule percentage of the
fault path.

95b982b451 PM / s2idle: Clear the events_check_enabled flag
Problem: This flag does not get cleared currently in the suspend or
resume path in the following cases:

 * In case some driver's suspend routine returns an error.
 * Successful s2idle case
 * etc?

Why is this a problem: What happens is that the next suspend attempt
could fail even though the user did not enable the flag by writing to
/sys/power/wakeup_count. This is 1 use case how the issue can be seen
(but similar use case with driver suspend failure can be thought of):

 1. Read /sys/power/wakeup_count
 2. echo count > /sys/power/wakeup_count
 3. echo freeze > /sys/power/wakeup_count
 4. Let the system suspend, and wakeup the system using some wake source
that calls pm_wakeup_event() e.g. power button or something.
 5. Note that the combined wakeup count would be incremented due
to the pm_wakeup_event() in the resume path.
 6. After resuming the events_check_enabled flag is still set.

At this point if the user attempts to freeze again (without writing to
/sys/power/wakeup_count), the suspend would fail even though there has
been no wake event since the past resume.

Address that by clearing the flag just before a resume is completed,
so that it is always cleared for the corner cases mentioned above.

b24413180f License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.

By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.

Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.

This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.

How this work was done:

Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
 - file had no licensing information it it.
 - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
 - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,

Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.

The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.

The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
 - Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
 - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
   lines of source
 - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
   lines).

All documentation files were explicitly excluded.

The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.

 - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
   COPYING file license applied.

For non */uapi/* files that summary was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 11139

and resulted in the first patch in this series.

If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|-------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930

and resulted in the second patch in this series.

 - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:

   SPDX license identifier # files
   ---------------------------------------------------|------
   GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
   GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
   LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
   GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
   ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
   LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
   LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
   ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1

and that resulted in the third patch in this series.

 - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
   the concluded license(s).

 - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.

 - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).

 - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

 - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
   in time.

In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.

Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.

Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.

In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.

Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
 - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
   license ids and scores
 - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
 - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
   SPDX license was correct

This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.

These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

87cbde8d90 PM / s2idle: Invoke the ->wake() platform callback earlier
The role of the ->wake() platform callback for suspend-to-idle is to
deal with possible spurious wakeups, among other things. The ACPI
implementation of it, acpi_s2idle_wake(), additionally checks the
conditions for entering the Low Power S0 Idle state by the platform
and reports the ones that have not been met.

However, the ->wake() platform callback is invoked after calling
dpm_noirq_resume_devices(), which means that the power states of some
devices may have changed since s2idle_enter() returned, so some unmet
Low Power S0 Idle conditions may be reported incorrectly as a result
of that.

To avoid these false positives, reorder the invocations of the
dpm_noirq_resume_devices() routine and the ->wake() platform callback
in s2idle_loop().

50e7663233 sched/cpuset/pm: Fix cpuset vs. suspend-resume bugs
Cpusets vs. suspend-resume is _completely_ broken. And it got noticed
because it now resulted in non-cpuset usage breaking too.

On suspend cpuset_cpu_inactive() doesn't call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() because it doesn't want to move tasks about,
there is no need, all tasks are frozen and won't run again until after
we've resumed everything.

But this means that when we finally do call into
cpuset_update_active_cpus() after resuming the last frozen cpu in
cpuset_cpu_active(), the top_cpuset will not have any difference with
the cpu_active_mask and this it will not in fact do _anything_.

So the cpuset configuration will not be restored. This was largely
hidden because we would unconditionally create identity domains and
mobile users would not in fact use cpusets much. And servers what do use
cpusets tend to not suspend-resume much.

An addition problem is that we'd not in fact wait for the cpuset work to
finish before resuming the tasks, allowing spurious migrations outside
of the specified domains.

Fix the rebuild by introducing cpuset_force_rebuild() and fix the
ordering with cpuset_wait_for_hotplug().

74d46992e0 block: replace bi_bdev with a gendisk pointer and partitions index
This way we don't need a block_device structure to submit I/O. The
block_device has different life time rules from the gendisk and
request_queue and is usually only available when the block device node
is open. Other callers need to explicitly create one (e.g. the lightnvm
passthrough code, or the new nvme multipathing code).

For the actual I/O path all that we need is the gendisk, which exists
once per block device. But given that the block layer also does
partition remapping we additionally need a partition index, which is
used for said remapping in generic_make_request.

Note that all the block drivers generally want request_queue or
sometimes the gendisk, so this removes a layer of indirection all
over the stack.

726fb6b4f2 ACPI / PM: Check low power idle constraints for debug only
For SoC to achieve its lowest power platform idle state a set of hardware
preconditions must be met. These preconditions or constraints can be
obtained by issuing a device specific method (_DSM) with function "1".
Refer to the document provided in the link below.

Here during initialization (from attach() callback of LPS0 device), invoke
function 1 to get the device constraints. Each enabled constraint is
stored in a table.

The devices in this table are used to check whether they were in required
minimum state, while entering suspend. This check is done from platform
freeze wake() callback, only when /sys/power/pm_debug_messages attribute
is non zero.

If any constraint is not met and device is ACPI power managed then it
prints the device information to kernel logs.

Also if debug is enabled in acpi/sleep.c, the constraint table and state
of each device on wake is dumped in kernel logs.

Since pm_debug_messages_on setting is used as condition to check
constraints outside kernel/power/main.c, pm_debug_messages_on is changed
to a global variable.

d507e2ebd2 mm: fix global NR_SLAB_.*CLAIMABLE counter reads
As Tetsuo points out:
"Commit 385386cff4 ("mm: vmstat: move slab statistics from zone to
node counters") broke "Slab:" field of /proc/meminfo . It shows nearly
  0kB"

In addition to /proc/meminfo, this problem also affects the slab
counters OOM/allocation failure info dumps, can cause early -ENOMEM from
overcommit protection, and miscalculate image size requirements during
suspend-to-disk.

This is because the patch in question switched the slab counters from
the zone level to the node level, but forgot to update the global
accessor functions to read the aggregate node data instead of the
aggregate zone data.

Use global_node_page_state() to access the global slab counters.

e870c6c87c ACPI / PM: Prefer suspend-to-idle over S3 on some systems
Modify the ACPI system sleep support setup code to select
suspend-to-idle as the default system sleep state if
(1) the ACPI_FADT_LOW_POWER_S0 flag is set in the FADT and
(2) the Low Power Idle S0 _DSM interface has been discovered and
(3) the default sleep state was not selected from the kernel command
line.

The main motivation for this change is that systems where the (1) and
(2) conditions are met typically ship with OSes that don't exercise
the S3 path in the platform firmware which remains untested and turns
out to be non-functional at least in some cases.

  - Rework the way in which the current CPU frequency is exported by

the APERF and MPERF registers by always using values read from
these registers, when available, to compute the current frequency
regardless of which cpufreq driver is in use (Len Brown).

  - Rework the PCI/ACPI device wakeup infrastructure to remove the
questionable and artificial distinction between "devices that
can wake up the system from sleep states" and "devices that can
generate wakeup signals in the working state" from it, which
allows the code to be simplified quite a bit (Rafael Wysocki).

  - Fix the wakeup IRQ framework by making it use SRCU instead of
RCU which doesn't allow sleeping in the read-side critical
sections, but which in turn is expected to be allowed by the
IRQ bus locking infrastructure (Thomas Gleixner).

  - Modify some computations in the intel_pstate driver to avoid
rounding errors resulting from them (Srinivas Pandruvada).

  - Reduce the overhead of the intel_pstate driver in the HWP
(hardware-managed P-states) mode and when the "performance"
P-state selection algorithm is in use by making it avoid
registering scheduler callbacks in those cases (Len Brown).

  - Rework the energy_performance_preference sysfs knob in
intel_pstate by changing the values that correspond to
different symbolic hint names used by it (Len Brown).

  - Make it possible to use more than one cpuidle driver at the same
    time on ARM (Daniel Lezcano).

  - Make it possible to prevent the cpuidle menu governor from using
the 0 state by disabling it via sysfs (Nicholas Piggin).

  - Add support for FFH (Fixed Functional Hardware) MWAIT in ACPI C1
    on AMD systems (Yazen Ghannam).

  - Make the CPPC cpufreq driver take the lowest nonlinear performance
    information into account (Prashanth Prakash).

  - Add support for hi3660 to the cpufreq-dt driver, fix the
imx6q driver and clean up the sfi, exynos5440 and intel_pstate
drivers (Colin Ian King, Krzysztof Kozlowski, Octavian Purdila,
    Rafael Wysocki, Tao Wang).

  - Fix a few minor issues in the generic power domains (genpd)
framework and clean it up somewhat (Krzysztof Kozlowski,
    Mikko Perttunen, Viresh Kumar).

  - Fix a couple of minor issues in the operating performance points
(OPP) framework and clean it up somewhat (Viresh Kumar).

  - Fix a CONFIG dependency in the hibernation core and clean it up
slightly (Balbir Singh, Arvind Yadav, BaoJun Luo).

  - Add rk3228 support to the rockchip-io adaptive voltage scaling
    (AVS) driver (David Wu).

  - Fix an incorrect bit shift operation in the RAPL power capping
    driver (Adam Lessnau).

  - Add support for the EPP field in the HWP (hardware managed
    P-states) control register, HWP.EPP, to the x86_energy_perf_policy
tool and update msr-index.h with HWP.EPP values (Len Brown).

  - Fix some minor issues in the turbostat tool (Len Brown).

  - Add support for AMD family 0x17 CPUs to the cpupower tool and fix
a minor issue in it (Sherry Hurwitz).

  - Assorted cleanups, mostly related to the constification of some
data structures (Arvind Yadav, Joe Perches, Kees Cook, Krzysztof

support power button wakeup from suspend-to-idle on recent Dell
     laptops (Rafael Wysocki).

That includes the core suspend-to-idle code rework, support for the
Low Power S0 _DSM interface, and support for the ACPI INT0002
Virtual GPIO device from Hans de Goede (required for USB keyboard
wakeup from suspend-to-idle to work on some machines).

   - Stop trying to export the current CPU frequency via /proc/cpuinfo
on x86 as that is inaccurate and confusing (Len Brown).

   - Rework the way in which the current CPU frequency is exported by
the kernel (over the cpufreq sysfs interface) on x86 systems with
the APERF and MPERF registers by always using values read from
these registers, when available, to compute the current frequency
regardless of which cpufreq driver is in use (Len Brown).

   - Rework the PCI/ACPI device wakeup infrastructure to remove the
questionable and artificial distinction between "devices that can
wake up the system from sleep states" and "devices that can
generate wakeup signals in the working state" from it, which allows
the code to be simplified quite a bit (Rafael Wysocki).

   - Fix the wakeup IRQ framework by making it use SRCU instead of RCU
which doesn't allow sleeping in the read-side critical sections,
but which in turn is expected to be allowed by the IRQ bus locking
     infrastructure (Thomas Gleixner).

   - Modify some computations in the intel_pstate driver to avoid
rounding errors resulting from them (Srinivas Pandruvada).

   - Reduce the overhead of the intel_pstate driver in the HWP
(hardware-managed P-states) mode and when the "performance" P-state
selection algorithm is in use by making it avoid registering
scheduler callbacks in those cases (Len Brown).

   - Rework the energy_performance_preference sysfs knob in intel_pstate
by changing the values that correspond to different symbolic hint
names used by it (Len Brown).

   - Make it possible to use more than one cpuidle driver at the same
     time on ARM (Daniel Lezcano).

   - Make it possible to prevent the cpuidle menu governor from using
the 0 state by disabling it via sysfs (Nicholas Piggin).

   - Add support for FFH (Fixed Functional Hardware) MWAIT in ACPI C1 on
     AMD systems (Yazen Ghannam).

   - Make the CPPC cpufreq driver take the lowest nonlinear performance
     information into account (Prashanth Prakash).

   - Add support for hi3660 to the cpufreq-dt driver, fix the imx6q
driver and clean up the sfi, exynos5440 and intel_pstate drivers
(Colin Ian King, Krzysztof Kozlowski, Octavian Purdila, Rafael
     Wysocki, Tao Wang).

   - Fix a few minor issues in the generic power domains (genpd)
framework and clean it up somewhat (Krzysztof Kozlowski, Mikko
     Perttunen, Viresh Kumar).

   - Add support for AMD family 0x17 CPUs to the cpupower tool and fix a
minor issue in it (Sherry Hurwitz).

   - Assorted cleanups, mostly related to the constification of some
data structures (Arvind Yadav, Joe Perches, Kees Cook, Krzysztof
     Kozlowski)"

33e4f80ee6 ACPI / PM: Ignore spurious SCI wakeups from suspend-to-idle
The ACPI SCI (System Control Interrupt) is set up as a wakeup IRQ
during suspend-to-idle transitions and, consequently, any events
signaled through it wake up the system from that state. However,
on some systems some of the events signaled via the ACPI SCI while
suspended to idle should not cause the system to wake up. In fact,
quite often they should just be discarded.

Arguably, systems should not resume entirely on such events, but in
order to decide which events really should cause the system to resume
and which are spurious, it is necessary to resume up to the point
when ACPI SCIs are actually handled and processed, which is after
executing dpm_resume_noirq() in the system resume path.

For this reasons, add a loop around freeze_enter() in which the
platforms can process events signaled via multiplexed IRQ lines
like the ACPI SCI and add suspend-to-idle hooks that can be
used for this purpose to struct platform_freeze_ops.

In the ACPI case, the ->wake hook is used for checking if the SCI
has triggered while suspended and deferring the interrupt-induced
system wakeup until the events signaled through it are actually
processed sufficiently to decide whether or not the system should
resume. In turn, the ->sync hook allows all of the relevant event
queues to be flushed so as to prevent events from being missed due
to race conditions.

In addition to that, some ACPI code processing wakeup events needs
to be modified to use the "hard" version of wakeup triggers, so that
it will cause a system resume to happen on device-induced wakeup
events even if the "soft" mechanism to prevent the system from
suspending is not enabled. However, to preserve the existing
behavior with respect to suspend-to-RAM, this only is done in
the suspend-to-idle case and only if an SCI has occurred while
suspended.

Revert commit eed4d47efe (ACPI / sleep: Ignore spurious SCI wakeups

a number of different issues on various systems.

That includes, but is not limited to, premature suspend-to-RAM aborts
on Dell XPS 13 (9343) reported by Dominik.

The issue the commit in question attempted to address is real and
will need to be taken care of going forward, but evidently more work
is needed for this purpose.

Pull sched.h split-up from Ingo Molnar:
"The point of these changes is to significantly reduce the

After these changes the new <linux/sched.h>'s typical preprocessed
size goes down from a previous ~0.68 MB (~22K lines) to ~0.45 MB (~15K
lines), which is around 40% faster to build on typical configs.

Not much changed from the last version (-v2) posted three weeks ago: I
eliminated quirks, backmerged fixes plus I rebased it to an upstream
SHA1 from yesterday that includes most changes queued up in -next plus
all sched.h changes that were pending from Andrew.

I've re-tested the series both on x86 and on cross-arch defconfigs,
and did a bisectability test at a number of random points.

I tried to test as many build configurations as possible, but some
build breakage is probably still left - but it should be mostly
limited to architectures that have no cross-compiler binaries
available on kernel.org, and non-default configurations"

8cff66791a PM / sleep: Fix test_suspend after sleep state rework
When passing "test_suspend=mem" to the kernel:

PM: can't test 'mem' suspend state

and the suspend test is not run.

Commit 406e79385f ("PM / sleep: System sleep state selection
interface rework") changed pm_labels[] from a contiguous NULL-terminated
array to a sparse array (with the first element unpopulated), breaking
the assumptions of the iterator in setup_test_suspend().

Iterate from PM_SUSPEND_MIN to PM_SUSPEND_MAX - 1 to fix this.

36869cb93d Merge branch 'for-4.10/block' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block
Pull block layer updates from Jens Axboe:
"This is the main block pull request this series. Contrary to previous
release, I've kept the core and driver changes in the same branch. We
always ended up having dependencies between the two for obvious
reasons, so makes more sense to keep them together. That said, I'll
probably try and keep more topical branches going forward, especially
for cycles that end up being as busy as this one.

The major parts of this pull request is:

   - Improved support for O_DIRECT on block devices, with a small
private implementation instead of using the pig that is
     fs/direct-io.c. From Christoph.

   - Request completion tracking in a scalable fashion. This is utilized
by two components in this pull, the new hybrid polling and the
     writeback queue throttling code.

   - Improved support for polling with O_DIRECT, adding a hybrid mode
that combines pure polling with an initial sleep. From me.

   - Support for automatic throttling of writeback queues on the block
side. This uses feedback from the device completion latencies to
scale the queue on the block side up or down. From me.

   - Support from SMR drives in the block layer and for SD. From Hannes
     and Shaun.

   - Multi-connection support for nbd. From Josef.

   - Cleanup of request and bio flags, so we have a clear split between
which are bio (or rq) private, and which ones are shared. From
     Christoph.

   - A set of patches from Bart, that improve how we handle queue
     stopping and starting in blk-mq.

   - Support for WRITE_ZEROES from Chaitanya.

   - Lightnvm updates from Javier/Matias.

   - Supoort for FC for the nvme-over-fabrics code. From James Smart.

406e79385f PM / sleep: System sleep state selection interface rework
There are systems in which the platform doesn't support any special
sleep states, so suspend-to-idle (PM_SUSPEND_FREEZE) is the only
available system sleep state. However, some user space frameworks
only use the "mem" and (sometimes) "standby" sleep state labels, so
the users of those systems need to modify user space in order to be
able to use system suspend at all and that may be a pain in practice.

Commit 0399d4db3e (PM / sleep: Introduce command line argument for
sleep state enumeration) attempted to address this problem by adding
a command line argument to change the meaning of the "mem" string in
/sys/power/state to make it trigger suspend-to-idle (instead of
suspend-to-RAM).

However, there also are systems in which the platform does support
special sleep states, but suspend-to-idle is the preferred one anyway
(it even may save more energy than the platform-provided sleep states
in some cases) and the above commit doesn't help in those cases.

For this reason, rework the system sleep state selection interface
again (but preserve backwards compatibiliby). Namely, add a new
sysfs file, /sys/power/mem_sleep, that will control the system
suspend mode triggered by writing "mem" to /sys/power/state (in
analogy with what /sys/power/disk does for hibernation). Make it
select suspend-to-RAM ("deep" sleep) by default (if supported) and
fall back to suspend-to-idle ("s2idle") otherwise and add a new
command line argument, mem_sleep_default, allowing that default to
be overridden if need be.

At the same time, drop the relative_sleep_states command line
argument that doesn't make sense any more.

7d2e7a22cf oom, suspend: fix oom_killer_disable vs. pm suspend properly
Commit 7407054209 ("oom, suspend: fix oom_reaper vs.
oom_killer_disable race") has workaround an existing race between
oom_killer_disable and oom_reaper by adding another round of
try_to_freeze_tasks after the oom killer was disabled. This was the
easiest thing to do for a late 4.7 fix. Let's fix it properly now.

After "oom: keep mm of the killed task available" we no longer have to
call exit_oom_victim from the oom reaper because we have stable mm
available and hide the oom_reaped mm by MMF_OOM_SKIP flag. So let's
remove exit_oom_victim and the race described in the above commit
doesn't exist anymore if.

Unfortunately this alone is not sufficient for the oom_killer_disable
usecase because now we do not have any reliable way to reach
exit_oom_victim (the victim might get stuck on a way to exit for an
unbounded amount of time). OOM killer can cope with that by checking mm
flags and move on to another victim but we cannot do the same for
oom_killer_disable as we would lose the guarantee of no further
interference of the victim with the rest of the system. What we can do
instead is to cap the maximum time the oom_killer_disable waits for
victims. The only current user of this function (pm suspend) already
has a concept of timeout for back off so we can reuse the same value
there.

Let's drop set_freezable for the oom_reaper kthread because it is no
longer needed as the reaper doesn't wake or thaw any processes.

1ad1410f63 PM / Hibernate: allow hibernation with PAGE_POISONING_ZERO
PAGE_POISONING_ZERO disables zeroing new pages on alloc, they are
poisoned (zeroed) as they become available.
In the hibernate use case, free pages will appear in the system without
being cleared, left there by the loading kernel.

This patch will make sure free pages are cleared on resume when
PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is enabled. We free the pages just after resume
because we can't do it later: going through any device resume code might
allocate some memory and invalidate the free pages bitmap.

Thus we don't need to disable hibernation when PAGE_POISONING_ZERO is
enabled.

fa7fd6fa38 PM / sleep: enable suspend-to-idle even without registered suspend_ops
Suspend-to-idle (aka the "freeze" sleep state) is a system sleep state
in which all of the processors enter deepest possible idle state and
wait for interrupts right after suspending all the devices.

There is no hard requirement for a platform to support and register
platform specific suspend_ops to enter suspend-to-idle/freeze state.
Only deeper system sleep states like PM_SUSPEND_STANDBY and
PM_SUSPEND_MEM rely on such low level support/implementation.

suspend-to-idle can be entered as along as all the devices can be
suspended. This patch enables the support for suspend-to-idle even on
systems that don't have any low level support for deeper system sleep
states and/or don't register any platform specific suspend_ops.

924d869675 PM / hibernate: Fix rtree_next_node() to avoid walking off list ends
rtree_next_node() walks the linked list of leaf nodes to find the next
block of pages in the struct memory_bitmap. If it walks off the end of
the list of nodes, it walks the list of memory zones to find the next
region of memory. If it walks off the end of the list of zones, it
returns false.

This leaves the struct bm_position's node and zone pointers pointing
at their respective struct list_heads in struct mem_zone_bm_rtree.

memory_bm_find_bit() uses struct bm_position's node and zone pointers
to avoid walking lists and trees if the next bit appears in the same
node/zone. It handles these values being stale.

Swap rtree_next_node()s 'step then test' to 'test-next then step',
this means if we reach the end of memory we return false and leave
the node and zone pointers as they were.

This fixes a panic on resume using AMD Seattle with 64K pages:

Here struct mem_zone_bm_rtree's start_pfn has been returned instead of

we walked off the end of the lists during mark_unsafe_pages().

This behaviour was exposed by commit 6dbecfd345 ("PM / hibernate:

599d0c954f mm, vmscan: move LRU lists to node
This moves the LRU lists from the zone to the node and related data such
as counters, tracing, congestion tracking and writeback tracking.

Unfortunately, due to reclaim and compaction retry logic, it is
necessary to account for the number of LRU pages on both zone and node
logic. Most reclaim logic is based on the node counters but the retry
logic uses the zone counters which do not distinguish inactive and
active sizes. It would be possible to leave the LRU counters on a
per-zone basis but it's a heavier calculation across multiple cache
lines that is much more frequent than the retry checks.

Other than the LRU counters, this is mostly a mechanical patch but note
that it introduces a number of anomalies. For example, the scans are
per-zone but using per-node counters. We also mark a node as congested
when a zone is congested. This causes weird problems that are fixed
later but is easier to review.

In the event that there is excessive overhead on 32-bit systems due to
the nodes being on LRU then there are two potential solutions

1. Long-term isolation of highmem pages when reclaim is lowmem

When pages are skipped, they are immediately added back onto the LRU
list. If lowmem reclaim persisted for long periods of time, the same
highmem pages get continually scanned. The idea would be that lowmem
keeps those pages on a separate list until a reclaim for highmem pages
arrives that splices the highmem pages back onto the LRU. It potentially
could be implemented similar to the UNEVICTABLE list.

That would reduce the skip rate with the potential corner case is that
highmem pages have to be scanned and reclaimed to free lowmem slab pages.

2. Linear scan lowmem pages if the initial LRU shrink fails

This will break LRU ordering but may be preferable and faster during
memory pressure than skipping LRU pages.

Pull power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"Again, the majority of changes go into the cpufreq subsystem, but
there are no big features this time. The cpufreq changes that stand
out somewhat are the governor interface rework and improvements
related to the handling of frequency tables. Apart from those, there
are fixes and new device/CPU IDs in drivers, cleanups and an
improvement of the new schedutil governor.

Next, there are some changes in the hibernation core, including a fix
for a nasty problem related to the MONITOR/MWAIT usage by CPU offline

fe12c00d21 PM / hibernate: Introduce test_resume mode for hibernation
test_resume mode is to verify if the snapshot data
written to swap device can be successfully restored
to memory. It is useful to ease the debugging process
on hibernation, since this mode can not only bypass
the BIOSes/bootloader, but also the system re-initialization.

To avoid the risk to break the filesystm on persistent storage,
this patch resumes the image with tasks frozen.

For example:
echo test_resume > /sys/power/disk
echo disk > /sys/power/state

406f992e4a x86 / hibernate: Use hlt_play_dead() when resuming from hibernation
On Intel hardware, native_play_dead() uses mwait_play_dead() by
default and only falls back to the other methods if that fails.
That also happens during resume from hibernation, when the restore
(boot) kernel runs disable_nonboot_cpus() to take all of the CPUs
except for the boot one offline.

However, that is problematic, because the address passed to
__monitor() in mwait_play_dead() is likely to be written to in the
last phase of hibernate image restoration and that causes the "dead"
CPU to start executing instructions again. Unfortunately, the page
containing the address in that CPU's instruction pointer may not be
valid any more at that point.

First, that page may have been overwritten with image kernel memory
contents already, so the instructions the CPU attempts to execute may
simply be invalid. Second, the page tables previously used by that
CPU may have been overwritten by image kernel memory contents, so the
address in its instruction pointer is impossible to resolve then.

A report from Varun Koyyalagunta and investigation carried out by
Chen Yu show that the latter sometimes happens in practice.

To prevent it from happening, temporarily change the smp_ops.play_dead
pointer during resume from hibernation so that it points to a special
"play dead" routine which uses hlt_play_dead() and avoids the
inadvertent "revivals" of "dead" CPUs this way.

A slightly unpleasant consequence of this change is that if the
system is hibernated with one or more CPUs offline, it will generally
draw more power after resume than it did before hibernation, because
the physical state entered by CPUs via hlt_play_dead() is higher-power
than the mwait_play_dead() one in the majority of cases. It is
possible to work around this, but it is unclear how much of a problem
that's going to be in practice, so the workaround will be implemented
later if it turns out to be necessary.

4c0b6c10fb PM / hibernate: Image data protection during restoration
Make it possible to protect all pages holding image data during
hibernate image restoration by setting them read-only (so as to
catch attempts to write to those pages after image data have been
stored in them).

This adds overhead to image restoration code (it may cause large
page mappings to be split as a result of page flags changes) and
the errors it protects against should never happen in theory, so
the feature is only active after passing hibernate=protect_image
to the command line of the restore kernel.

Also it only is built if CONFIG_DEBUG_RODATA is set.

307c5971c9 PM / hibernate: Recycle safe pages after image restoration
One of the memory bitmaps used by the hibernation image restoration
code is freed after the image has been loaded.

That is not quite efficient, though, because the memory pages used
for building that bitmap are known to be safe (ie. they were not
used by the image kernel before hibernation) and the arch-specific
code finalizing the image restoration may need them. In that case
it needs to allocate those pages again via the memory management
subsystem, check if they are really safe again by consulting the
other bitmaps and so on.

To avoid that, recycle those pages by putting them into the global
list of known safe pages so that they can be given to the arch code
right away when necessary.

Rework mark_unsafe_pages() to use a simpler method of clearing
all bits in free_pages_map and to set the bits for the "unsafe"

hibernation) with the help of duplicate_memory_bitmap().

For this purpose, move the pfn_valid() check from mark_unsafe_pages()
to unpack_orig_pfns() where the "unsafe" pages are discovered.

9c744481c0 PM / hibernate: Do not free preallocated safe pages during image restore
The core image restoration code preallocates some safe pages
(ie. pages that weren't used by the image kernel before hibernation)
for future use before allocating the bulk of memory for loading the
image data. Those safe pages are then freed so they can be allocated
again (with the memory management subsystem's help). That's done to
ensure that there will be enough safe pages for temporary data
structures needed during image restoration.

However, it is not really necessary to free those pages after they
have been allocated. They can be added to the (global) list of
safe pages right away and then picked up from there when needed
without freeing.

That reduces the overhead related to using safe pages, especially
in the arch-specific code, so modify the code accordingly.

7407054209 oom, suspend: fix oom_reaper vs. oom_killer_disable race
Tetsuo has reported the following potential oom_killer_disable vs.
oom_reaper race:

 (1) freeze_processes() starts freezing user space threads.
 (2) Somebody (maybe a kenrel thread) calls out_of_memory().
 (3) The OOM killer calls mark_oom_victim() on a user space thread
P1 which is already in __refrigerator().
 (4) oom_killer_disable() sets oom_killer_disabled = true.
 (5) P1 leaves __refrigerator() and enters do_exit().
 (6) The OOM reaper calls exit_oom_victim(P1) before P1 can call
     exit_oom_victim(P1).
 (7) oom_killer_disable() returns while P1 not yet finished
 (8) P1 perform IO/interfere with the freezer.

This situation is unfortunate. We cannot move oom_killer_disable after
all the freezable kernel threads are frozen because the oom victim might
depend on some of those kthreads to make a forward progress to exit so
we could deadlock. It is also far from trivial to teach the oom_reaper
to not call exit_oom_victim() because then we would lose a guarantee of
the OOM killer and oom_killer_disable forward progress because
exit_mm->mmput might block and never call exit_oom_victim.

It seems the easiest way forward is to workaround this race by calling
try_to_freeze_tasks again after oom_killer_disable. This will make sure
that all the tasks are frozen or it bails out.

f6cf0545ec PM / Hibernate: Call flush_icache_range() on pages restored in-place
Some architectures require code written to memory as if it were data to be
'cleaned' from any data caches before the processor can fetch them as new
instructions.

During resume from hibernate, the snapshot code copies some pages directly,
meaning these architectures do not get a chance to perform their cache
maintenance. Modify the read and decompress code to call
flush_icache_range() on all pages that are restored, so that the restored
in-place pages are guaranteed to be executable on these architectures.

276142730c PM / sleep: Clear pm_suspend_global_flags upon hibernate
When suspending to RAM, waking up and later suspending to disk,
we gratuitously runtime resume devices after the thaw phase.
This does not occur if we always suspend to RAM or always to disk.

pm_complete_with_resume_check(), which gets called from
pci_pm_complete() among others, schedules a runtime resume
if PM_SUSPEND_FLAG_FW_RESUME is set. The flag is set during
a suspend-to-RAM cycle. It is cleared at the beginning of
the suspend-to-RAM cycle but not afterwards and it is not
cleared during a suspend-to-disk cycle at all. Fix it.

Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"This time the majority of changes go into cpufreq and they are
  significant.

First off, the way CPU frequency updates are triggered is different
now. Instead of having to set up and manage a deferrable timer for
each CPU in the system to evaluate and possibly change its frequency
periodically, cpufreq governors set up callbacks to be invoked by the
scheduler on a regular basis (basically on utilization updates). The
"old" governors, "ondemand" and "conservative", still do all of their
work in process context (although that is triggered by the scheduler
now), but intel_pstate does it all in the callback invoked by the
scheduler with no need for any additional asynchronous processing.

Of course, this eliminates the overhead related to the management of
all those timers, but also it allows the cpufreq governor code to be
simplified quite a bit. On top of that, the common code and data
structures used by the "ondemand" and "conservative" governors are
cleaned up and made more straightforward and some long-standing and
quite annoying problems are addressed. In particular, the handling of
governor sysfs attributes is modified and the related locking becomes
more fine grained which allows some concurrency problems to be avoided
(particularly deadlocks with the core cpufreq code).

In principle, the new mechanism for triggering frequency updates
allows utilization information to be passed from the scheduler to
cpufreq. Although the current code doesn't make use of it, in the
works is a new cpufreq governor that will make decisions based on the
scheduler's utilization data. That should allow the scheduler and
cpufreq to work more closely together in the long run.

In addition to the core and governor changes, cpufreq drivers are
updated too. Fixes and optimizations go into intel_pstate, the
cpufreq-dt driver is updated on top of some modification in the
Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework and there are fixes and
other updates in the powernv cpufreq driver.

Apart from the cpufreq updates there is some new ACPICA material,
including a fix for a problem introduced by previous ACPICA updates,
and some less significant changes in the ACPI code, like CPPC code
optimizations, ACPI processor driver cleanups and support for loading
  ACPI tables from initrd.

Also updated are the generic power domains framework, the Intel RAPL
power capping driver and the turbostat utility and we have a bunch of
  traditional assorted fixes and cleanups.

  Specifics:

   - Redesign of cpufreq governors and the intel_pstate driver to make
them use callbacks invoked by the scheduler to trigger CPU

1414c7f4f7 mm/page_poisoning.c: allow for zero poisoning
By default, page poisoning uses a poison value (0xaa) on free. If this
is changed to 0, the page is not only sanitized but zeroing on alloc
with __GFP_ZERO can be skipped as well. The tradeoff is that detecting
corruption from the poisoning is harder to detect. This feature also
cannot be used with hibernation since pages are not guaranteed to be
zeroed after hibernation.

Wall time obtained from do_gettimeofday gives 32 bit timeval which can only
represent time until January 2038. This patch moves to ktime_t, a 64-bit time.

Also, wall time is susceptible to sudden jumps due to user setting the time or
due to NTP. Boot time is constantly increasing time better suited for

993e9fe1e7 PM: APM_EMULATION does not depend on PM
The APM emulation code does multiple things, and some of them depend on
PM_SLEEP, while the battery management does not. However, selecting
the symbol like SHARPSL_PM does causes a Kconfig warning:

warning: (SHARPSL_PM && PMAC_APM_EMU) selects APM_EMULATION which has unmet direct dependencies (PM && SYS_SUPPORTS_APM_EMULATION)

From all I can tell, this is completely harmless, and we can simply allow
APM_EMULATION to be enabled here, even if PM is not.

71baba4b92 mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and
could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic
context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should
clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing
__GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the
wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly
indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing
them prevents it.

d0164adc89 mm, page_alloc: distinguish between being unable to sleep, unwilling to sleep and avoiding waking kswapd
__GFP_WAIT has been used to identify atomic context in callers that hold
spinlocks or are in interrupts. They are expected to be high priority and
have access one of two watermarks lower than "min" which can be referred
to as the "atomic reserve". __GFP_HIGH users get access to the first
lower watermark and can be called the "high priority reserve".

Over time, callers had a requirement to not block when fallback options
were available. Some have abused __GFP_WAIT leading to a situation where
an optimisitic allocation with a fallback option can access atomic
reserves.

This patch uses __GFP_ATOMIC to identify callers that are truely atomic,
cannot sleep and have no alternative. High priority users continue to use
__GFP_HIGH. __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM identifies callers that can sleep and
are willing to enter direct reclaim. __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM to identify
callers that want to wake kswapd for background reclaim. __GFP_WAIT is
redefined as a caller that is willing to enter direct reclaim and wake
kswapd for background reclaim.

This patch then converts a number of sites

o __GFP_ATOMIC is used by callers that are high priority and have memory
pools for those requests. GFP_ATOMIC uses this flag.

o Callers that have a limited mempool to guarantee forward progress clear
__GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM but keep __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. bio allocations fall
into this category where kswapd will still be woken but atomic reserves
are not used as there is a one-entry mempool to guarantee progress.

o Callers that are checking if they are non-blocking should use the
helper gfpflags_allow_blocking() where possible. This is because
checking for __GFP_WAIT as was done historically now can trigger false
positives. Some exceptions like dm-crypt.c exist where the code intent
is clearer if __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is used instead of the helper due to
  flag manipulations.

o Callers that built their own GFP flags instead of starting with GFP_KERNEL
and friends now also need to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM.

The first key hazard to watch out for is callers that removed __GFP_WAIT
and was depending on access to atomic reserves for inconspicuous reasons.
In some cases it may be appropriate for them to use __GFP_HIGH.

The second key hazard is callers that assembled their own combination of
GFP flags instead of starting with something like GFP_KERNEL. They may
now wish to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. It's almost certainly harmless
if it's missed in most cases as other activity will wake kswapd.

ef25ba0476 PM / sleep: Add flags to indicate platform firmware involvement
There are quite a few cases in which device drivers, bus types or
even the PM core itself may benefit from knowing whether or not
the platform firmware will be involved in the upcoming system power
transition (during system suspend) or whether or not it was involved
in it (during system resume).

For this reason, introduce global system suspend flags that can be
used by the platform code to expose that information for the benefit
of the other parts of the kernel and make the ACPI core set them
as appropriate.

Users of the new flags will be added later.

"This first core part of the block IO changes contains:

   - Cleanup of the bio IO error signaling from Christoph. We used to

store the error in the bio itself.

   - Improvement of the above from myself, by shrinking the bio size
down again to fit in two cachelines on x86-64.

   - Revert of the max_hw_sectors cap removal from a revision again,
from Jeff Moyer. This caused performance regressions in various
tests. Reinstate the limit, bump it to a more reasonable size
     instead.

   - Make /sys/block/<dev>/queue/discard_max_bytes writeable, by me.
Most devices have huge trim limits, which can cause nasty latencies
when deleting files. Enable the admin to configure the size down.
We will look into having a more sane default instead of UINT_MAX
     sectors.

   - Improvement of the SGP gaps logic from Keith Busch.

   - Enable the block core to handle arbitrarily sized bios, which
enables a nice simplification of bio_add_page() (which is an IO hot
     path). From Kent.

   - Improvements to the partition io stats accounting, making it
     faster. From Ming Lei.

   - Also from Ming Lei, a basic fixup for overflow of the sysfs pending
file in blk-mq, as well as a fix for a blk-mq timeout race
     condition.

   - Ming Lin has been carrying Kents above mentioned patches forward

     that.

2fd77fff4b PM / suspend: make sync() on suspend-to-RAM build-time optional
The Linux kernel suspend path has traditionally invoked sys_sync()
before freezing user threads.

But sys_sync() can be expensive, and some user-space OS's do not want
the kernel to pay the cost of sys_sync() on every suspend -- preferring
invoke sync() from user-space if/when they want it.

So make sys_sync on suspend build-time optional.

4246a0b63b block: add a bi_error field to struct bio
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO:

 (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag
 (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback

The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible
error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent
when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent
bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms
available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors
and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of
them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds
of error returns.

So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct
bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up.

fff3b16d27 PM / sleep: Increase default DPM watchdog timeout to 60
Many harddisks (mostly WD ones) have firmware problems and take too
long, more than 10 seconds, to resume from suspend. And this often
exceeds the default DPM watchdog timeout (12 seconds), resulting in a
kernel panic out of sudden.

Since most distros just take the default as is, we should give a bit
more safer value. This patch increases the default value from 12
seconds to one minute, which has been confirmed to be long enough for
such problematic disks.

8c506608c3 PM / hibernate: re-enable nonboot cpus on disable_nonboot_cpus() failure
When disable_nonboot_cpus() fails on some cpu it doesn't bring back all
cpus it managed to offline, a consequent call to enable_nonboot_cpus() is
expected. In hibernation_platform_enter() we don't call
enable_nonboot_cpus() on error so cpus stay offlined.

create_image() and resume_target_kernel() functions handle
disable_nonboot_cpus() faults correctly, hibernation_platform_enter()
is the only one which is doing it wrong.

671767360d PM / sleep: Return -EBUSY from suspend_enter() on wakeup detection
If a wakeup source is found to be pending in the last stage of
suspend after syscore suspend, then the machine won't suspend, but
suspend_enter() will return 0. That is confusing, as wakeup detection
elsewhere causes -EBUSY to be returned from suspend_enter().

To avoid the confusion, make suspend_enter() return -EBUSY in that
case too.

Some of the system suspend diagnostic messages related to
suspend-to-idle refer to it as "freeze sleep" or "freeze state"
while the others say "suspend-to-idle". To reduce the possible
confusion that may result from that, refine the former either to
say "suspend to idle" too or to make it clearer that what is printed

1d4a9c17d4 PM / sleep: add configurable delay for pm_test
When CONFIG_PM_DEBUG=y, we provide a sysfs file (/sys/power/pm_test) for
selecting one of a few suspend test modes, where rather than entering a
full suspend state, the kernel will perform some subset of suspend
steps, wait 5 seconds, and then resume back to normal operation.

This mode is useful for (among other things) observing the state of the
system just before entering a sleep mode, for debugging or analysis
purposes. However, a constant 5 second wait is not sufficient for some
sorts of analysis; for example, on an SoC, one might want to use
external tools to probe the power states of various on-chip controllers
or clocks.

This patch turns this 5 second delay into a configurable module
parameter, so users can determine how long to wait in this
pseudo-suspend state before resuming the system.

Example (wait 30 seconds);

  # echo 30 > /sys/module/suspend/parameters/pm_test_delay
  # echo core > /sys/power/pm_test
  # time echo mem > /sys/power/state
  ...

3810631332 PM / sleep: Re-implement suspend-to-idle handling
In preparation for adding support for quiescing timers in the final
stage of suspend-to-idle transitions, rework the freeze_enter()
function making the system wait on a wakeup event, the freeze_wake()
function terminating the suspend-to-idle loop and the mechanism by
which deep idle states are entered during suspend-to-idle.

First of all, introduce a simple state machine for suspend-to-idle
and make the code in question use it.

Second, prevent freeze_enter() from losing wakeup events due to race
conditions and ensure that the number of online CPUs won't change
while it is being executed. In addition to that, make it force
all of the CPUs re-enter the idle loop in case they are in idle
states already (so they can enter deeper idle states if possible).

Next, drop cpuidle_use_deepest_state() and replace use_deepest_state
checks in cpuidle_select() and cpuidle_reflect() with a single
suspend-to-idle state check in cpuidle_idle_call().

Finally, introduce cpuidle_enter_freeze() that will simply find the
deepest idle state available to the given CPU and enter it using
cpuidle_enter().

c32b3cbe0d oom, PM: make OOM detection in the freezer path raceless
Commit 5695be142e ("OOM, PM: OOM killed task shouldn't escape PM
suspend") has left a race window when OOM killer manages to
note_oom_kill after freeze_processes checks the counter. The race
window is quite small and really unlikely and partial solution deemed
sufficient at the time of submission.

Tejun wasn't happy about this partial solution though and insisted on a
full solution. That requires the full OOM and freezer's task freezing
exclusion, though. This is done by this patch which introduces oom_sem
RW lock and turns oom_killer_disable() into a full OOM barrier.

oom_killer_disabled check is moved from the allocation path to the OOM
level and we take oom_sem for reading for both the check and the whole
OOM invocation.

oom_killer_disable() takes oom_sem for writing so it waits for all
currently running OOM killer invocations. Then it disable all the further
OOMs by setting oom_killer_disabled and checks for any oom victims.
Victims are counted via mark_tsk_oom_victim resp. unmark_oom_victim. The
last victim wakes up all waiters enqueued by oom_killer_disable().
Therefore this function acts as the full OOM barrier.

The page fault path is covered now as well although it was assumed to be
safe before. As per Tejun, "We used to have freezing points deep in file
system code which may be reacheable from page fault." so it would be
better and more robust to not rely on freezing points here. Same applies
to the memcg OOM killer.

out_of_memory tells the caller whether the OOM was allowed to trigger and
the callers are supposed to handle the situation. The page allocation
path simply fails the allocation same as before. The page fault path will
retry the fault (more on that later) and Sysrq OOM trigger will simply
complain to the log.

Normally there wouldn't be any unfrozen user tasks after
try_to_freeze_tasks so the function will not block. But if there was an
OOM killer racing with try_to_freeze_tasks and the OOM victim didn't
finish yet then we have to wait for it. This should complete in a finite
time, though, because

	- the victim cannot loop in the page fault handler (it would die
on the way out from the exception)
	- it cannot loop in the page allocator because all the further
allocation would fail and __GFP_NOFAIL allocations are not
	  acceptable at this stage
	- it shouldn't be blocked on any locks held by frozen tasks
(try_to_freeze expects lockless context) and kernel threads and
work queues are not frozen yet

Pull ACPI and power management updates from Rafael Wysocki:
"We have a few new features this time, including a new SFI-based
cpufreq driver, a new devfreq driver for Tegra Activity Monitor, a new
devfreq class for providing its governors with raw utilization data
and a new ACPI driver for AMD SoCs.

Still, the majority of changes here are reworks of existing code to
make it more straightforward or to prepare it for implementing new
features on top of it. The primary example is the rework of ACPI
resources handling from Jiang Liu, Thomas Gleixner and Lv Zheng with
support for IOAPIC hotplug implemented on top of it, but there is
quite a number of changes of this kind in the cpufreq core, ACPICA,
ACPI EC driver, ACPI processor driver and the generic power domains

The most active developer is Viresh Kumar with his cpufreq changes.

  Specifics:
