tty_wait_until_sent_from_close() drops the tty lock while waiting
for the tty driver to finish sending previously accepted data (ie.,
data remaining in its write buffer and transmit fifo).
tty_wait_until_sent_from_close() was added by commit a57a7bf3fc
("TTY: define tty_wait_until_sent_from_close") to prevent the entire
tty subsystem from being unable to open new ttys while waiting for
one tty to close while output drained.
However, since commit 0911261d4c ("tty: Don't take tty_mutex for tty
count changes"), holding a tty lock while closing does not prevent other
ttys from being opened/closed/hung up, but only prevents lifetime event
changes for the tty under lock.
Holding the tty lock while waiting for output to drain does prevent
parallel non-blocking opens (O_NONBLOCK) from advancing or returning
while the tty lock is held. However, all parallel opens _already_
block even if the tty lock is dropped while closing and the parallel
open advances. Blocking in open has been in mainline since at least 2.6.29
(see tty_port_block_til_ready(); note the test for O_NONBLOCK is _after_
the wait while ASYNC_CLOSING).
IOW, before this patch a non-blocking open will sleep anyway for the
_entire_ duration of a parallel hardware shutdown, and when it wakes, the
error return will cause a release of its tty, and it will restart with
a fresh attempt to open. Similarly with a blocking open that is already
waiting; when it's woken, the hardware shutdown has already completed
to ASYNC_INITIALIZED is not set, which forces a release and restart as
well.
So, holding the tty lock across the _entire_ close (which is what this
patch does), even while waiting for output to drain, is equivalent to
the current outcome wrt parallel opens.

The Kconfig currently controlling compilation of this code is:
drivers/tty/hvc/Kconfig:config HVC_DRIVER
drivers/tty/hvc/Kconfig: bool
...meaning that it currently is not being built as a module by anyone.
Lets remove the modular code that is essentially orphaned, so that
when reading the driver there is no doubt it is builtin-only, even
though someone bothered to comment that the code was not used.
Unlike other changes, this driver binds in w/o using module_init,
so we dont have init ordering concerns with this commit.

The iucv code uses arrays as arguments. Even though this does not
really cause a problem, it could be misleading, since the compiler
turns array arguments into just a pointer argument. To be more

Based on include/xen/mm.h [1], Linux is mistakenly using MFN when GFN
is meant, I suspect this is because the first support for Xen was for
PV. This resulted in some misimplementation of helpers on ARM and
confused developers about the expected behavior.
For instance, with pfn_to_mfn, we expect to get an MFN based on the name.
Although, if we look at the implementation on x86, it's returning a GFN.
For clarity and avoid new confusion, replace any reference to mfn with
gfn in any helpers used by PV drivers. The x86 code will still keep some
reference of pfn_to_mfn which may be used by all kind of guests
No changes as been made in the hypercall field, even
though they may be invalid, in order to keep the same as the defintion
in xen repo.
Note that page_to_mfn has been renamed to xen_page_to_gfn to avoid a
name to close to the KVM function gfn_to_page.
Take also the opportunity to simplify simple construction such
as pfn_to_mfn(page_to_pfn(page)) into xen_page_to_gfn. More complex clean up
will come in follow-up patches.

This patch fixes several endianness issues detected when running the HVSI
driver in little endian mode.
These issues are raised in little endian mode because the data exchanged in
memory between the kernel and the hypervisor has to be in big endian
format. This exhibits as errors such as:
irq: (null) didn't like hwirq-0x1000a00 to VIRQ16 mapping (rc=-22)
hvsi_console_init: couldn't create irq mapping for 0x1000a00
The data structures already have endian annotations, and sparse is
generating numerous warnings based on those. This commit fixes all of
them.

Most code already uses consts for the struct kernel_param_ops,
sweep the kernel for the last offending stragglers. Other than
include/linux/moduleparam.h and kernel/params.c all other changes
were generated with the following Coccinelle SmPL patch. Merge
conflicts between trees can be handled with Coccinelle.
In the future git could get Coccinelle merge support to deal with
patch --> fail --> grammar --> Coccinelle --> new patch conflicts
automatically for us on patches where the grammar is available and
the patch is of high confidence. Consider this a feature request.

Convert the opal hvc driver to use the new irqchip to register for

A non-percpu VIRQ (e.g., VIRQ_CONSOLE) may be freed on a different
VCPU than it is bound to. This can result in a race between
handle_percpu_irq() and removing the action in __free_irq() because
handle_percpu_irq() does not take desc->lock. The interrupt handler
sees a NULL action and oopses.
Only use the percpu chip/handler for per-CPU VIRQs (like VIRQ_TIMER).

We were returning zero if no bytes could be written to the Tilera
hypervisor console device, but this causes the output to be truncated.
By returning -EAGAIN the tty hvc driver will come back and try again,
which gives the semantics we want, and avoids dropping console output.

They are dominated by the removal of the .owner field in platform

removing a line in a structure.
Other than that, a few minor driver core and debugfs changes. There are
some ath9k patches coming in through this tree that have been acked by

Some backends call hvc_kick() to wakeup the HVC thread from its
slumber upon incoming characters. This however doesn't work
properly because it uses msleep_interruptible() which is mostly
immune to wake_up_process(). It will basically go back to sleep
until the timeout is expired (only signals can really wake it).
Replace it with a simple shedule_timeout_interruptible() instead,
which may wakeup earlier every now and then but we really don't
care in this case.

When 'console=hvc0' is specified to the kernel parameter in x86 KVM guest,
hvc console is setup within a kthread. However, that will cause SEGV
and the boot will fail when the driver is builtin to the kernel,
because currently hvc_console_setup() is annotated with '__init'. This
patch removes '__init' to boot the guest successfully with 'console=hvc0'.

Commit 3e6c6f630a ("Delay creation of
khcvd thread") moved the call of hvc_init from being a device_initcall
into hvc_alloc, and used a non-null hvc_driver as indication of whether
hvc_init had already been called.
The problem with this is that hvc_driver is only assigned a value
at the bottom of hvc_init, and so there is a window where multiple
hvc_alloc calls can be in progress at the same time and hence try
and call hvc_init multiple times. Previously the use of device_init
guaranteed that hvc_init was only called once.
This manifests itself as sporadic instances of two hvc_init calls
racing each other, and with the loser of the race getting -EBUSY
from tty_register_driver() and hence that virtual console fails:
Couldn't register hvc console driver
virtio-ports vport0p1: error -16 allocating hvc for port
Here we add an atomic_t to guarantee we'll never run hvc_init twice.

The HVC_OPAL/RTAS/UDBG/XEN options are all bool, and hence their support
is either present or absent. It will never be modular, so using
module_init as an alias for __initcall is rather misleading.
Fix this up now, so that we can relocate module_init from
init.h into module.h in the future. If we don't do this, we'd
have to add module.h to obviously non-modular code, and that
would be a worse thing.
Note that direct use of __initcall is discouraged, vs. one
of the priority categorized subgroups. As __initcall gets
mapped onto device_initcall, our use of device_initcall
directly in this change means that the runtime impact is
zero -- it will remain at level 6 in initcall ordering.
Also the __exitcall functions have been outright deleted since
they are only ever of interest to UML, and UML will never be
using any of this code.

Add the generic "lnxhvc" terminal ID to automatically assign a HVC terminal when
connecting to the HVC IUCV terminal device driver. The terminal device driver
tries to find a free (not connected) HVC terminal to satisfy the incoming

Pull Xen updates from Konrad Rzeszutek Wilk:
"This has tons of fixes and two major features which are concentrated
around the Xen SWIOTLB library.
The short <blurb> is that the tracing facility (just one function) has
been added to SWIOTLB to make it easier to track I/O progress.
Additionally under Xen and ARM (32 & 64) the Xen-SWIOTLB driver
"is used to translate physical to machine and machine to physical
addresses of foreign[guest] pages for DMA operations" (Stefano) when
booting under hardware without proper IOMMU.
There are also bug-fixes, cleanups, compile warning fixes, etc.
The commit times for some of the commits is a bit fresh - that is b/c
we wanted to make sure we have the Ack's from the ARM folks - which
with the string of back-to-back conferences took a bit of time. Rest
assured - the code has been stewing in #linux-next for some time.
Features:
- SWIOTLB has tracing added when doing bounce buffer.
- Xen ARM/ARM64 can use Xen-SWIOTLB. This work allows Linux to
safely program real devices for DMA operations when running as a
guest on Xen on ARM, without IOMMU support. [*1]
- xen_raw_printk works with PVHVM guests if needed.
Bug-fixes:
- Make memory ballooning work under HVM with large MMIO region.
- Inform hypervisor of MCFG regions found in ACPI DSDT.
- Remove deprecated IRQF_DISABLED.
- Remove deprecated __cpuinit.
[*1]:
"On arm and arm64 all Xen guests, including dom0, run with second
stage translation enabled. As a consequence when dom0 programs a
device for a DMA operation is going to use (pseudo) physical
addresses instead machine addresses. This work introduces two trees
to track physical to machine and machine to physical mappings of
foreign pages. Local pages are assumed mapped 1:1 (physical address
== machine address). It enables the SWIOTLB-Xen driver on ARM and
ARM64, so that Linux can translate physical addresses to machine
addresses for dma operations when necessary. " (Stefano)"

The xen_raw_printk works great for debugging purposes. We use
for PV guests and we can also use it for HVM guests.
However, for HVM guests we have a fallback of using the 0xe9
port in case the hypervisor does not support an HVM guest of
using the console_io hypercall. As such lets use 0xe9 during
early bootup, and once the hyper-page is setup and if the
console_io hypercall is supported - use that. Otherwise we
will fallback to using the 0xe9 after early bootup.
We also alter the return value for dom0_write_console to return
an error value instead of zero. The HVC API has been supporting
returning error values for quite some time.
P.S.
To use (and to see the output in the Xen ring buffer) one has to build
the hypervisor with 'debug=y'.

Enabling the ARM DCC console and using without a JTAG connection will
simply hang the system. Since distros like to turn on all options, this
is a reoccurring problem to debug. We can do better by checking if
anything is attached and handling characters. There is no way to probe
this, so send a newline and check that it is handled.

This solves a problem observed in kexec'ed kernel where 200ms timeout is
too short and bootconsole fails to initialize. Console did eventually
become workable but much later into the boot process.
Observed timeout was around 260ms, but I decided to make it a little bigger
for more reliability.
This has been tested on Power7 machine with Petitboot as a primary

This change improves and cleans up the tile console.
- We enable HVC_IRQ support on tilegx, with the addition of a new
Tilera hypervisor API for tilegx to allow a console IPI. If IPI
support is not available we fall back to the previous polling mode.
- We simplify the earlyprintk code to use CON_BOOT and eliminate some
of the other supporting earlyprintk code.
- A new tile_console_write() primitive is used to send output to
the console and is factored out of the hvc_tile driver.
This lets us support a "sim_console" boot argument to allow using
simulator hooks to send output to the "console" as a slightly
faster alternative to emulating the hardware more directly.

Implement the dtr_rts() hvc console callback to improve control when to
disconnect the IUCV connection. Previously, the IUCV connection was
disconnected during the notifier_del() callback, i.e., when the last file
descriptor to the hvc terminal device was closed.
Recent changes in login programs caused undesired disconnects during the
login phase. To prevent these kind of disconnects, implement the dtr_rts

The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on

Now, we start converting tty buffer functions to actually use
tty_port. This will allow us to get rid of the need of tty in many
call sites. Only tty_port will needed and hence no more
tty_port_tty_get in those paths.
Now, the one where most of tty_port_tty_get gets removed:
tty_flip_buffer_push.
IOW we also closed all the races in drivers not using tty_port_tty_get
at all yet.
Also we move tty_flip_buffer_push declaration from include/linux/tty.h
to include/linux/tty_flip.h to all others while we are changing it
anyway.

After commit "TTY: move tty buffers to tty_port", the tty buffers are
not freed in some drivers. This is because tty_port_destructor is not
called whenever a tty_port is freed. This was an assumption I counted
with but was unfortunately untrue. So fix the drivers to fulfil this
assumption.
To be sure, the TTY buffers (and later some stuff) are gone along with
the tty_port, we have to call tty_port_destroy at tear-down places.
This is mostly where the structure containing a tty_port is freed.
This patch does exactly that -- put tty_port_destroy at those places.

Commit bdb498c200 "TTY: hvc_console, add tty install" took the port
refcounting out of hvc_open()/hvc_close(), but failed to remove the
kref_put() and tty_kref_put() calls in hvc_hangup() that were there to
remove the extra references that hvc_open() had taken.
The result was that doing a vhangup() when the current terminal was
a hvc_console, then closing the current terminal, would end up calling
destroy_hvc_struct() and making the port disappear entirely. This
meant that Fedora 17 systems would boot up but then not display the
login prompt on the console, and attempts to open /dev/hvc0 would
give a "No such device" error.
This fixes it by removing the extra kref_put() and tty_kref_put() calls.
