2f33b512a5 rcu: Optimize rcu_is_nocb_cpu() for RCU_NOCB_CPU_ALL
If CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU_ALL=y, then rcu_is_nocb_cpu() will always
return true, however, the current version nevertheless checks
rcu_nocb_mask. This commit therefore creates a static inline
implementation of rcu_is_nocb_cpu() that unconditionally returns
true when CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU_ALL=y.

88c1863066 rcu: Define rcu_assign_pointer() in terms of smp_store_release()
The new smp_store_release() function provides better guarantees than did
rcu_assign_pointer(), and potentially less overhead on some architectures.
The guarantee that smp_store_release() provides that rcu_assign_pointer()
does that is obscure, but its lack could cause considerable confusion.
This guarantee is illustrated by the following code fragment:

	struct foo {
		int a;
		int b;
		int c;
		struct foo *next;
	};
	struct foo foo1;
	struct foo foo2;
	struct foo __rcu *foop;

	...

	foo2.a = 1;
	foo2.b = 2;
	BUG_ON(foo2.c);
	rcu_assign_pointer(foop, &foo);

	...

	fp = rcu_dereference(foop);
	fp.c = 3;

The current rcu_assign_pointer() semantics permit the BUG_ON() to
trigger because rcu_assign_pointer()'s smp_wmb() is not guaranteed to
order prior reads against later writes. This commit therefore upgrades
rcu_assign_pointer() from smp_wmb() to smp_store_release() to avoid this
counter-intuitive outcome.

fb9edbe984 lockdep: Make held_lock->check and "int check" argument bool
The "int check" argument of lock_acquire() and held_lock->check are
misleading. This is actually a boolean: 2 means "true", everything
else is "false".

And there is no need to pass 1 or 0 to lock_acquire() depending on
CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING, __lock_acquire() checks prove_locking at the
start and clears "check" if !CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING.

Note: probably we can simply kill this member/arg. The only explicit
user of check => 0 is rcu_lock_acquire(), perhaps we can change it to
use lock_acquire(trylock =>, read => 2). __lockdep_no_validate means
check => 0 implicitly, but we can change validate_chain() to check
hlock->instance->key instead. Not to mention it would be nice to get
rid of lockdep_set_novalidate_class().

a8d4b8345e introduce __fcheck_files() to fix rcu_dereference_check_fdtable(), kill rcu_my_thread_group_empty()
rcu_dereference_check_fdtable() looks very wrong,

1. rcu_my_thread_group_empty() was added by 844b9a8707 "vfs: fix
   RCU-lockdep false positive due to /proc" but it doesn't really
   fix the problem. A CLONE_THREAD (without CLONE_FILES) task can
   hit the same race with get_files_struct().

   And otoh rcu_my_thread_group_empty() can suppress the correct
   warning if the caller is the CLONE_FILES (without CLONE_THREAD)
   task.

2. files->count == 1 check is not really right too. Even if this
   files_struct is not shared it is not safe to access it lockless
   unless the caller is the owner.

   Otoh, this check is sub-optimal. files->count == 0 always means
   it is safe to use it lockless even if files != current->files,
   but put_files_struct() has to take rcu_read_lock(). See the next
   patch.

This patch removes the buggy checks and turns fcheck_files() into
__fcheck_files() which uses rcu_dereference_raw(), the "unshared"
callers, fget_light() and fget_raw_light(), can use it to avoid
the warning from RCU-lockdep.

fcheck_files() is trivially reimplemented as rcu_lockdep_assert()
plus __fcheck_files().

ac7c8e3dd2 rcu: Add comment on evaluate-once properties of rcu_assign_pointer().
The rcu_assign_pointer() macro, as with most cpp macros, must not evaluate

appears no less than three times. However, but one expansion is only

cc6783f788 rcu: Is it safe to enter an RCU read-side critical section?
There is currently no way for kernel code to determine whether it
is safe to enter an RCU read-side critical section, in other words,
whether or not RCU is paying attention to the currently running CPU.
Given the large and increasing quantity of code shared by the idle loop
and non-idle code, the this shortcoming is becoming increasingly painful.

This commit therefore adds __rcu_is_watching(), which returns true if
it is safe to enter an RCU read-side critical section on the currently
running CPU. This function is quite fast, using only a __this_cpu_read().
However, the caller must disable preemption.

0edd1b1784 nohz_full: Add full-system-idle state machine
This commit adds the state machine that takes the per-CPU idle data
as input and produces a full-system-idle indication as output. This
state machine is driven out of RCU's quiescent-state-forcing
mechanism, which invokes rcu_sysidle_check_cpu() to collect per-CPU
idle state and then rcu_sysidle_report() to drive the state machine.

The full-system-idle state is sampled using rcu_sys_is_idle(), which
also drives the state machine if RCU is idle (and does so by forcing
RCU to become non-idle). This function returns true if all but the
timekeeping CPU (tick_do_timer_cpu) are idle and have been idle long
enough to avoid memory contention on the full_sysidle_state state
variable. The rcu_sysidle_force_exit() may be called externally
to reset the state machine back into non-idle state.

For large systems the state machine is driven out of RCU's
force-quiescent-state logic, which provides good scalability at the price
of millisecond-scale latencies on the transition to full-system-idle
state. This is not so good for battery-powered systems, which are usually
small enough that they don't need to care about scalability, but which
do care deeply about energy efficiency. Small systems therefore drive
the state machine directly out of the idle-entry code. The number of
CPUs in a "small" system is defined by a new NO_HZ_FULL_SYSIDLE_SMALL
Kconfig parameter, which defaults to 8. Note that this is a build-time
definition.

e66c33d579 rcu: Add const annotation to char * for RCU tracepoints and functions
All the RCU tracepoints and functions that reference char pointers do
so with just 'char *' even though they do not modify the contents of
the string itself. This will cause warnings if a const char * is used
in one of these functions.

The RCU tracepoints store the pointer to the string to refer back to them
when the trace output is displayed. As this can be minutes, hours or
even days later, those strings had better be constant.

This change also opens the door to allow the RCU tracepoint strings and
their addresses to be exported so that userspace tracing tools can
translate the contents of the pointers of the RCU tracepoints.

f0a0e6f282 rcu: Clarify memory-ordering properties of grace-period primitives
This commit explicitly states the memory-ordering properties of the
RCU grace-period primitives. Although these properties were in some
sense implied by the fundmental property of RCU ("a grace period must
wait for all pre-existing RCU read-side critical sections to complete"),
stating it explicitly will be a great labor-saving device.

19dd1591fc rcu: New rcu_user_enter_after_irq() and rcu_user_exit_after_irq() APIs
In some cases, it is necessary to enter or exit userspace-RCU-idle mode
from an interrupt handler, for example, if some other CPU sends this
CPU a resched IPI. In this case, the current CPU would enter the IPI
handler in userspace-RCU-idle mode, but would need to exit the IPI handler
after having exited that mode.

To allow this to work, this commit adds two new APIs to TREE_RCU:

- rcu_user_enter_after_irq(). This must be called from an interrupt between
rcu_irq_enter() and rcu_irq_exit(). After the irq calls rcu_irq_exit(),
the irq handler will return into an RCU extended quiescent state.
In theory, this interrupt is never a nested interrupt, but in practice
it might interrupt softirq, which looks to RCU like a nested interrupt.

- rcu_user_exit_after_irq(). This must be called from a non-nesting
interrupt, interrupting an RCU extended quiescent state, also
between rcu_irq_enter() and rcu_irq_exit(). After the irq calls
rcu_irq_exit(), the irq handler will return in an RCU non-quiescent
state.

adf5091e6c rcu: New rcu_user_enter() and rcu_user_exit() APIs
RCU currently insists that only idle tasks can enter RCU idle mode, which
prohibits an adaptive tickless kernel (AKA nohz cpusets), which in turn
would mean that usermode execution would always take scheduling-clock
interrupts, even when there is only one task runnable on the CPU in
question.

This commit therefore adds rcu_user_enter() and rcu_user_exit(), which
allow non-idle tasks to enter RCU idle mode. These are quite similar
to rcu_idle_enter() and rcu_idle_exit(), respectively, except that they
omit the idle-task checks.

b4270ee356 rcu: Permit RCU_NONIDLE() to be used from interrupt context
There is a need to use RCU from interrupt context, but either before
rcu_irq_enter() is called or after rcu_irq_exit() is called. If the

uses, as they appear to be illegal uses of RCU from the idle loop.

9dd8fb16c3 rcu: Make exit_rcu() more precise and consolidate
When running preemptible RCU, if a task exits in an RCU read-side
critical section having blocked within that same RCU read-side critical
section, the task must be removed from the list of tasks blocking a
grace period (perhaps the current grace period, perhaps the next grace
period, depending on timing). The exit() path invokes exit_rcu() to
do this cleanup.

However, the current implementation of exit_rcu() needlessly does the
cleanup even if the task did not block within the current RCU read-side
critical section, which wastes time and needlessly increases the size
of the state space. Fix this by only doing the cleanup if the current
task is actually on the list of tasks blocking some grace period.

While we are at it, consolidate the two identical exit_rcu() functions
into a single function.

"[RFC - PATCH 0/7] consolidation of BUG support code."
 		https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/1/26/525
 --

 The changes shown here are to unify linux's BUG support under
 the one <linux/bug.h> file. Due to historical reasons, we have
 some BUG code in bug.h and some in kernel.h -- i.e. the support for
 BUILD_BUG in linux/kernel.h predates the addition of linux/bug.h,
 but old code in kernel.h wasn't moved to bug.h at that time. As
 a band-aid, kernel.h was including <asm/bug.h> to pseudo link them.

 This has caused confusion[1] and general yuck/WTF[2] reactions.
 Here is an example that violates the principle of least surprise:

       CC      lib/string.o
       lib/string.c: In function 'strlcat':
       lib/string.c:225:2: error: implicit declaration of function 'BUILD_BUG_ON'
       make[2]: *** [lib/string.o] Error 1
       $
       $ grep linux/bug.h lib/string.c
       #include <linux/bug.h>
       $

 We've included <linux/bug.h> for the BUG infrastructure and yet we
 still get a compile fail! [We've not kernel.h for BUILD_BUG_ON.]
 Ugh - very confusing for someone who is new to kernel development.

 With the above in mind, the goals of this changeset are:

 1) find and fix any include/*.h files that were relying on the
    implicit presence of BUG code.
 2) find and fix any C files that were consuming kernel.h and
    hence relying on implicitly getting some/all BUG code.
 3) Move the BUG related code living in kernel.h to <linux/bug.h>
 4) remove the asm/bug.h from kernel.h to finally break the chain.

 During development, the order was more like 3-4, build-test, 1-2.
 But to ensure that git history for bisect doesn't get needless
 build failures introduced, the commits have been reorderd to fix
 the problem areas in advance.

  With the above in mind, the goals of this changeset are:

  1) find and fix any include/*.h files that were relying on the

  2) find and fix any C files that were consuming kernel.h and hence

  to ensure that git history for bisect doesn't get needless build

7ccaba5314 consolidate WARN_...ONCE() static variables
Due to the alignment of following variables, these typically consume
more than just the single byte that 'bool' requires, and as there are a
few hundred instances, the cache pollution (not so much the waste of
memory) sums up. Put these variables into their own section, outside of
any half way frequently used memory range.

Do the same also to the __warned variable of rcu_lockdep_assert().
(Don't, however, include the ones used by printk_once() and alike, as

If a header file is making use of BUG, BUG_ON, BUILD_BUG_ON, or any

8a2ecf474d rcu: Add RCU_NONIDLE() for idle-loop RCU read-side critical sections
RCU, RCU-bh, and RCU-sched read-side critical sections are forbidden
in the inner idle loop, that is, between the rcu_idle_enter() and the
rcu_idle_exit() -- RCU will happily ignore any such read-side critical

This commit therefore provides an RCU_NONIDLE() macro that can be used to
wrap code in the idle loop that requires RCU read-side critical sections.

These checks are not perfect, in particular, they can be subverted
through use of things like rcu_dereference_raw(). Note that it is not
possible to put checks in rcu_read_lock() and friends due to the fact
that these primitives are used in code that might be used under either

5e1ee6e101 rcu: Note that rcu_access_pointer() can be used for teardown
There is no convenient expression for rcu_deference_protected()
when it is used in tearing down multilinked structures following
a grace period. For example, suppose that an element containing an
RCU-protected pointer to a second element is removed from an enclosing
RCU-protected data structure, then the write-side lock is released,
and finally synchronize_rcu() is invoked to wait for a grace period.
Then it is necessary to traverse the pointer in order to free up the
second element. But we are not in an RCU read-side critical section
and we are holding no locks, so the usual rcu_dereference_check() and
rcu_dereference_protected() primitives are not appropriate. Neither
is rcu_dereference_raw(), as it is intended for use in data structures
where the user defines the locking design (for example, list_head).

So this responsibility is added to rcu_access_pointer()'s list, and
this commit updates rcu_assign_pointer()'s header comment accordingly.

When CONFIG_RCU_FAST_NO_HZ is enabled, RCU will allow a given CPU to

RCU avoids system hangs in this case by scheduling a timer for several

9b2e4f1880 rcu: Track idleness independent of idle tasks
Earlier versions of RCU used the scheduling-clock tick to detect idleness
by checking for the idle task, but handled idleness differently for
CONFIG_NO_HZ=y. But there are now a number of uses of RCU read-side
critical sections in the idle task, for example, for tracing. A more
fine-grained detection of idleness is therefore required.

This commit presses the old dyntick-idle code into full-time service,
so that rcu_idle_enter(), previously known as rcu_enter_nohz(), is
always invoked at the beginning of an idle loop iteration. Similarly,
rcu_idle_exit(), previously known as rcu_exit_nohz(), is always invoked
at the end of an idle-loop iteration. This allows the idle task to
use RCU everywhere except between consecutive rcu_idle_enter() and
rcu_idle_exit() calls, in turn allowing architecture maintainers to
specify exactly where in the idle loop that RCU may be used.

Because some of the userspace upcall uses can result in what looks
to RCU like half of an interrupt, it is not possible to expect that
the irq_enter() and irq_exit() hooks will give exact counts. This
patch therefore expands the ->dynticks_nesting counter to 64 bits
and uses two separate bitfields to count process/idle transitions
and interrupt entry/exit transitions. It is presumed that userspace
upcalls do not happen in the idle loop or from usermode execution
(though usermode might do a system call that results in an upcall).
The counter is hard-reset on each process/idle transition, which
avoids the interrupt entry/exit error from accumulating. Overflow
is avoided by the 64-bitness of the ->dyntick_nesting counter.

This commit also adds warnings if a non-idle task asks RCU to enter
idle state (and these checks will need some adjustment before applying
Frederic's OS-jitter patches (http://lkml.org/lkml/2011/10/7/246).
In addition, validation of ->dynticks and ->dynticks_nesting is added.

d322f45cee rcu: Make rcu_assign_pointer() unconditionally insert a memory barrier

b3fbab0571 rcu: Restore checks for blocking in RCU read-side critical sections
Long ago, using TREE_RCU with PREEMPT would result in "scheduling
while atomic" diagnostics if you blocked in an RCU read-side critical
section. However, PREEMPT now implies TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which defeats
this diagnostic. This commit therefore adds a replacement diagnostic
based on PROVE_RCU.

Because rcu_lockdep_assert() and lockdep_rcu_dereference() are now being
used for things that have nothing to do with rcu_dereference(), rename
lockdep_rcu_dereference() to lockdep_rcu_suspicious() and add a third
argument that is a string indicating what is suspicious. This third
argument is passed in from a new third argument to rcu_lockdep_assert().
Update all calls to rcu_lockdep_assert() to add an informative third
argument.

Also, add a pair of rcu_lockdep_assert() calls from within
rcu_note_context_switch(), one complaining if a context switch occurs
in an RCU-bh read-side critical section and another complaining if a
context switch occurs in an RCU-sched read-side critical section.
These are present only if the PROVE_RCU kernel parameter is enabled.

Finally, fix some checkpatch whitespace complaints in lockdep.c.

Again, you must enable PROVE_RCU to see these new diagnostics. But you
are enabling PROVE_RCU to check out new RCU uses in any case, aren't you?

9ab1544eb4 rcu: introduce kfree_rcu()
Many rcu callbacks functions just call kfree() on the base structure.
These functions are trivial, but their size adds up, and furthermore
when they are used in a kernel module, that module must invoke the
high-latency rcu_barrier() function at module-unload time.

The kfree_rcu() function introduced by this commit addresses this issue.
Rather than encoding a function address in the embedded rcu_head
structure, kfree_rcu() instead encodes the offset of the rcu_head
structure within the base structure. Because the functions are not
allowed in the low-order 4096 bytes of kernel virtual memory, offsets
up to 4095 bytes can be accommodated. If the offset is larger than
4095 bytes, a compile-time error will be generated in __kfree_rcu().
If this error is triggered, you can either fall back to use of call_rcu()
or rearrange the structure to position the rcu_head structure into the
first 4096 bytes.

Note that the allowable offset might decrease in the future, for example,
to allow something like kmem_cache_free_rcu().

The new kfree_rcu() function can replace code as follows:

	call_rcu(&p->rcu, simple_kfree_callback);

where "simple_kfree_callback()" might be defined as follows:

	void simple_kfree_callback(struct rcu_head *p)
	{
		struct foo *q = container_of(p, struct foo, rcu);

		kfree(q);
	}

with the following:

	kfree_rcu(&p->rcu, rcu);

Note that the "rcu" is the name of a field in the structure being
freed. The reason for using this rather than passing in a pointer
to the base structure is that the above approach allows better type
checking.

when there are only two concurrent instances of synchronize_sched_expedited().

This commit builds on Tejun's original posting, which may be found at
http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/11/9/204, adding memory barriers, avoiding
overflow of signed integers (other than via atomic_t), and fixing the
detection of batching.

7b27d5475f rcu,cleanup: move synchronize_sched_expedited() out of sched.c
The first version of synchronize_sched_expedited() used the migration
code in the scheduler, and was therefore implemented in kernel/sched.c.
However, the more recent version of this code no longer uses the
migration code, so this commit moves it to the main RCU source files.

b2c0710c46 rcu: move TINY_RCU from softirq to kthread
If RCU priority boosting is to be meaningful, callback invocation must
be boosted in addition to preempted RCU readers. Otherwise, in presence
of CPU real-time threads, the grace period ends, but the callbacks don't
get invoked. If the callbacks don't get invoked, the associated memory
doesn't get freed, so the system is still subject to OOM.

But it is not reasonable to priority-boost RCU_SOFTIRQ, so this commit
moves the callback invocations to a kthread, which can be boosted easily.

53ecfba259 rcu: only one evaluation of arg in rcu_dereference_check() unless sparse
The current version of the __rcu_access_pointer(), __rcu_dereference_check(),
and __rcu_dereference_protected() macros evaluate their "p" argument
three times, not counting typeof()s. This is bad news if that argument
contains a side effect. This commit therefore evaluates this argument
only once in normal kernel builds. However, the straightforward approach
defeats sparse's RCU-pointer checking, so when __CHECKER__ is defined,
the additional pair of evaluations of the "p" argument are performed in
order to permit sparse to detect misuse of RCU-protected pointers.

a57eb940d1 rcu: Add a TINY_PREEMPT_RCU
Implement a small-memory-footprint uniprocessor-only implementation of
preemptible RCU. This implementation uses but a single blocked-tasks
list rather than the combinatorial number used per leaf rcu_node by
TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which reduces memory consumption and greatly simplifies
processing. This version also takes advantage of uniprocessor execution
to accelerate grace periods in the case where there are no readers.

The general design is otherwise broadly similar to that of TREE_PREEMPT_RCU.

This implementation is a step towards having RCU implementation driven
off of the SMP and PREEMPT kernel configuration variables, which can
happen once this implementation has accumulated sufficient experience.

Removed ACCESS_ONCE() from __rcu_read_unlock() and added barrier() as
suggested by Steve Rostedt in order to avoid the compiler-reordering
issue noted by Mathieu Desnoyers (http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/16/183).

As can be seen below, CONFIG_TINY_PREEMPT_RCU represents almost 5Kbyte
savings compared to CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU. Of course, for non-real-time
workloads, CONFIG_TINY_RCU is even better.

ca5ecddfa8 rcu: define __rcu address space modifier for sparse
This commit provides definitions for the __rcu annotation defined earlier.
This annotation permits sparse to check for correct use of RCU-protected
pointers. If a pointer that is annotated with __rcu is accessed
directly (as opposed to via rcu_dereference(), rcu_assign_pointer(),
or one of their variants), sparse can be made to complain. To enable
such complaints, use the new default-disabled CONFIG_SPARSE_RCU_POINTER
kernel configuration option. Please note that these sparse complaints are
intended to be a debugging aid, -not- a code-style-enforcement mechanism.

There are special rcu_dereference_protected() and rcu_access_pointer()
accessors for use when RCU read-side protection is not required, for
example, when no other CPU has access to the data structure in question
or while the current CPU hold the update-side lock.

551d55a944 tree/tiny rcu: Add debug RCU head objects
Helps finding racy users of call_rcu(), which results in hangs because list
entries are overwritten and/or skipped.

Changelog since v4:
- Bissectability is now OK
- Now generate a WARN_ON_ONCE() for non-initialized rcu_head passed to
  call_rcu(). Statically initialized objects are detected with
  object_is_static().
- Rename rcu_head_init_on_stack to init_rcu_head_on_stack.
- Remove init_rcu_head() completely.

Changelog since v3:
- Include comments from Lai Jiangshan

This new patch version is based on the debugobjects with the newly introduced
"active state" tracker.

Non-initialized entries are all considered as "statically initialized". An
activation fixup (triggered by call_rcu()) takes care of performing the debug
object initialization without issuing any warning. Since we cannot increase the
size of struct rcu_head, I don't see much room to put an identifier for
statically initialized rcu_head structures. So for now, we have to live without
"activation without explicit init" detection. But the main purpose of this debug
option is to detect double-activations (double call_rcu() use of a rcu_head
before the callback is executed), which is correctly addressed here.

This also detects potential internal RCU callback corruption, which would cause
the callbacks to be executed twice.

2b3fc35f69 rcu: optionally leave lockdep enabled after RCU lockdep splat
There is no need to disable lockdep after an RCU lockdep splat,
so remove the debug_lockdeps_off() from lockdep_rcu_dereference().
To avoid repeated lockdep splats, use a static variable in the inlined
rcu_dereference_check() and rcu_dereference_protected() macros so that
a given instance splats only once, but so that multiple instances can
be detected per boot.

This is controlled by a new config variable CONFIG_PROVE_RCU_REPEATEDLY,
which is disabled by default. This provides the normal lockdep behavior
by default, but permits people who want to find multiple RCU-lockdep
splats per boot to easily do so.

b62730baea rcu: Add rcu_access_pointer and rcu_dereference_protected
This patch adds variants of rcu_dereference() that handle
situations where the RCU-protected data structure cannot change,
perhaps due to our holding the update-side lock, or where the
RCU-protected pointer is only to be fetched, not dereferenced.
These are needed due to some performance concerns with using
rcu_dereference() where it is not required, aside from the need
for lockdep/sparse checking.

The new rcu_access_pointer() primitive is for the case where the
pointer is be fetch and not dereferenced. This primitive may be
used without protection, RCU or otherwise, due to the fact that
it uses ACCESS_ONCE().

The new rcu_dereference_protected() primitive is for the case
where updates are prevented, for example, due to holding the
update-side lock. This primitive does neither ACCESS_ONCE() nor
smp_read_barrier_depends(), so can only be used when updates are
somehow prevented.

54dbf96c92 rcu: Suppress RCU lockdep warnings during early boot
RCU is used during very early boot, before RCU and lockdep have
been initialized. So make the underlying primitives
(rcu_read_lock_held(), rcu_read_lock_bh_held(),
rcu_read_lock_sched_held(), and rcu_dereference_check()) check
for early boot via the rcu_scheduler_active flag. This will
suppress false positives.

Also introduce a debug_lockdep_rcu_enabled() static inline
helper function, which tags the CONTINUE_PROVE_RCU case as
likely(), as suggested by Ingo Molnar.

632ee20013 rcu: Introduce lockdep-based checking to RCU read-side primitives
Inspection is proving insufficient to catch all RCU misuses,
which is understandable given that rcu_dereference() might be
protected by any of four different flavors of RCU (RCU, RCU-bh,
RCU-sched, and SRCU), and might also/instead be protected by any
of a number of locking primitives. It is therefore time to
enlist the aid of lockdep.

This set of patches is inspired by earlier work by Peter
Zijlstra and Thomas Gleixner, and takes the following approach:

o	Set up separate lockdep classes for RCU, RCU-bh, and RCU-sched.

o	Set up separate lockdep classes for each instance of SRCU.

o	Create primitives that check for being in an RCU read-side
	critical section. These return exact answers if lockdep is
	fully enabled, but if unsure, report being in an RCU read-side
	critical section. (We want to avoid false positives!)
	The primitives are:

	For RCU: rcu_read_lock_held(void)

	For RCU-bh: rcu_read_lock_bh_held(void)

	For RCU-sched: rcu_read_lock_sched_held(void)

	For SRCU: srcu_read_lock_held(struct srcu_struct *sp)

o	Add rcu_dereference_check(), which takes a second argument
	in which one places a boolean expression based on the above
	primitives and/or lockdep_is_held().

o	A new kernel configuration parameter, CONFIG_PROVE_RCU, enables
	rcu_dereference_check().  This depends on CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING,
	and should be quite helpful during the transition period while
	CONFIG_PROVE_RCU-unaware patches are in flight.

The existing rcu_dereference() primitive does no checking, but
upcoming patches will change that.

9b1d82fa16 rcu: "Tiny RCU", The Bloatwatch Edition
This patch is a version of RCU designed for !SMP provided for a
small-footprint RCU implementation. In particular, the
implementation of synchronize_rcu() is extremely lightweight and
high performance. It passes rcutorture testing in each of the
four relevant configurations (combinations of NO_HZ and PREEMPT)
on x86. This saves about 1K bytes compared to old Classic RCU
(which is no longer in mainline), and more than three kilobytes
compared to Hierarchical RCU (updated to 2.6.30):

	CONFIG_TREE_RCU:

	   text	   data	    bss	    dec	    filename
	    183       4       0     187     kernel/rcupdate.o
	   2783     520      36    3339     kernel/rcutree.o
				   3526 Total (vs 4565 for v7)

	CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU:

	   text	   data	    bss	    dec	    filename
	    263       4       0     267     kernel/rcupdate.o
	   4594     776      52    5422     kernel/rcutree.o
	   			   5689 Total (6155 for v7)

	CONFIG_TINY_RCU:

	   text	   data	    bss	    dec	    filename
	     96       4       0     100     kernel/rcupdate.o
	    734      24       0     758     kernel/rcutiny.o
	    			    858 Total (vs 848 for v7)

The above is for x86. Your mileage may vary on other platforms.
Further compression is possible, but is being procrastinated.

Changes from v7 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/10/9/388)

o	Apply Lai Jiangshan's review comments (aside from
might_sleep() in synchronize_sched(), which is covered by SMP builds).

o	Fix up expedited primitives.

Changes from v6 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/9/23/293).

o	Forward ported to put it into the 2.6.33 stream.

o	Added lockdep support.

o	Make lightweight rcu_barrier.

Changes from v5 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/6/23/12).

o	Ported to latest pre-2.6.32 merge window kernel.

	- Renamed rcu_qsctr_inc() to rcu_sched_qs().
	- Renamed rcu_bh_qsctr_inc() to rcu_bh_qs().
	- Provided trivial rcu_cpu_notify().
	- Provided trivial exit_rcu().
	- Provided trivial rcu_needs_cpu().
	- Fixed up the rcu_*_enter/exit() functions in linux/hardirq.h.

o	Removed the dependence on EMBEDDED, with a view to making
	TINY_RCU default for !SMP at some time in the future.

o	Added (trivial) support for expedited grace periods.

Changes from v4 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/5/2/91) include:

o	Squeeze the size down a bit further by removing the
	->completed field from struct rcu_ctrlblk.

o	This permits synchronize_rcu() to become the empty function.
	Previous concerns about rcutorture were unfounded, as
	rcutorture correctly handles a constant value from
	rcu_batches_completed() and rcu_batches_completed_bh().

Changes from v3 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/3/29/221) include:

o	Changed rcu_batches_completed(), rcu_batches_completed_bh()
	rcu_enter_nohz(), rcu_exit_nohz(), rcu_nmi_enter(), and
	rcu_nmi_exit(), to be static inlines, as suggested by David
	Howells. Doing this saves about 100 bytes from rcutiny.o.
	(The numbers between v3 and this v4 of the patch are not directly
	comparable, since they are against different versions of Linux.)

Changes from v2 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/2/3/333) include:

o	Fix whitespace issues.

o	Change short-circuit "||" operator to instead be "+" in order
to fix performance bug noted by "kraai" on LWN.

		(http://lwn.net/Articles/324348/)

Changes from v1 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/1/13/440) include:

o	This version depends on EMBEDDED as well as !SMP, as suggested
	by Ingo.

o	Updated rcu_needs_cpu() to unconditionally return zero,
	permitting the CPU to enter dynticks-idle mode at any time.
	This works because callbacks can be invoked upon entry to
	dynticks-idle mode.

o	Paul is now OK with this being included, based on a poll at
the Kernel Miniconf at linux.conf.au, where about ten people said
	that they cared about saving 900 bytes on single-CPU systems.

o	Applies to both mainline and tip/core/rcu.

Both rcu_read_lock_sched_notrace() and

Unfortunately, my naive assumption that gcc would see the inner

f41d911f8c rcu: Merge preemptable-RCU functionality into hierarchical RCU
Create a kernel/rcutree_plugin.h file that contains definitions
for preemptable RCU (or, under the #else branch of the #ifdef,
empty definitions for the classic non-preemptable semantics).
These definitions fit into plugins defined in kernel/rcutree.c
for this purpose.

This variant of preemptable RCU uses a new algorithm whose
read-side expense is roughly that of classic hierarchical RCU
under CONFIG_PREEMPT. This new algorithm's update-side expense
is similar to that of classic hierarchical RCU, and, in absence
of read-side preemption or blocking, is exactly that of classic
hierarchical RCU. Perhaps more important, this new algorithm
has a much simpler implementation, saving well over 1,000 lines
of code compared to mainline's implementation of preemptable
RCU, which will hopefully be retired in favor of this new
algorithm.

The simplifications are obtained by maintaining per-task
nesting state for running tasks, and using a simple
lock-protected algorithm to handle accounting when tasks block
within RCU read-side critical sections, making use of lessons
learned while creating numerous user-level RCU implementations
over the past 18 months.

03b042bf1d rcu: Add synchronize_sched_expedited() primitive
This adds the synchronize_sched_expedited() primitive that
implements the "big hammer" expedited RCU grace periods.

This primitive is placed in kernel/sched.c rather than
kernel/rcupdate.c due to its need to interact closely with the
migration_thread() kthread.

The idea is to wake up this kthread with req->task set to NULL,
in response to which the kthread reports the quiescent state
resulting from the kthread having been scheduled.

Because this patch needs to fallback to the slow versions of
the primitives in response to some races with CPU onlining and
offlining, a new synchronize_rcu_bh() primitive is added as
well.

a682604838 rcu: Teach RCU that idle task is not quiscent state at boot
This patch fixes a bug located by Vegard Nossum with the aid of
kmemcheck, updated based on review comments from Nick Piggin,
Ingo Molnar, and Andrew Morton. And cleans up the variable-name
and function-name language.  ;-)

The boot CPU runs in the context of its idle thread during boot-up.
During this time, idle_cpu(0) will always return nonzero, which will
fool Classic and Hierarchical RCU into deciding that a large chunk of
the boot-up sequence is a big long quiescent state. This in turn causes
RCU to prematurely end grace periods during this time.

This patch changes the rcutree.c and rcuclassic.c rcu_check_callbacks()
function to ignore the idle task as a quiescent state until the
system has started up the scheduler in rest_init(), introducing a
new non-API function rcu_idle_now_means_idle() to inform RCU of this
transition. RCU maintains an internal rcu_idle_cpu_truthful variable
to track this state, which is then used by rcu_check_callback() to
determine if it should believe idle_cpu().

Because this patch has the effect of disallowing RCU grace periods
during long stretches of the boot-up sequence, this patch also introduces
Josh Triplett's UP-only optimization that makes synchronize_rcu() be a
no-op if num_online_cpus() returns 1. This allows boot-time code that
calls synchronize_rcu() to proceed normally. Note, however, that RCU
callbacks registered by call_rcu() will likely queue up until later in
the boot sequence. Although rcuclassic and rcutree can also use this
same optimization after boot completes, rcupreempt must restrict its
use of this optimization to the portion of the boot sequence before the
scheduler starts up, given that an rcupreempt RCU read-side critical
section may be preeempted.

In addition, this patch takes Nick Piggin's suggestion to make the
system_state global variable be __read_mostly.

Changes since v4:

o	Changes the name of the introduced function and variable to
	be less emotional.  ;-)

Changes since v3:

o	WARN_ON(nr_context_switches() > 0) to verify that RCU
	switches out of boot-time mode before the first context
	switch, as suggested by Nick Piggin.

Changes since v2:

o	Created rcu_blocking_is_gp() internal-to-RCU API that
	determines whether a call to synchronize_rcu() is itself
	a grace period.

o	The definition of rcu_blocking_is_gp() for rcuclassic and
	rcutree checks to see if but a single CPU is online.

o	The definition of rcu_blocking_is_gp() for rcupreempt
	checks to see both if but a single CPU is online and if
	the system is still in early boot.

	This allows rcupreempt to again work correctly if running
	on a single CPU after booting is complete.

o	Added check to rcupreempt's synchronize_sched() for there
	being but one online CPU.

Tested all three variants both SMP and !SMP, booted fine, passed a short
rcutorture test on both x86 and Power.

64db4cfff9 "Tree RCU": scalable classic RCU implementation
This patch fixes a long-standing performance bug in classic RCU that
results in massive internal-to-RCU lock contention on systems with
more than a few hundred CPUs. Although this patch creates a separate
flavor of RCU for ease of review and patch maintenance, it is intended
to replace classic RCU.

This patch still handles stress better than does mainline, so I am still
calling it ready for inclusion. This patch is against the -tip tree.
Nevertheless, experience on an actual 1000+ CPU machine would still be
most welcome.

Most of the changes noted below were found while creating an rcutiny
(which should permit ejecting the current rcuclassic) and while doing
detailed line-by-line documentation.

Updates from v9 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/12/2/334):

o	Fixes from remainder of line-by-line code walkthrough,
	including comment spelling, initialization, undesirable
	narrowing due to type conversion, removing redundant memory
	barriers, removing redundant local-variable initialization,
	and removing redundant local variables.

	I do not believe that any of these fixes address the CPU-hotplug
	issues that Andi Kleen was seeing, but please do give it a whirl
	in case the machine is smarter than I am.

	A writeup from the walkthrough may be found at the following
	URL, in case you are suffering from terminal insomnia or
	masochism:

	http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/paulmck/tmp/rcutree-walkthrough.2008.12.16a.pdf

o	Made rcutree tracing use seq_file, as suggested some time
	ago by Lai Jiangshan.

o	Added a .csv variant of the rcudata debugfs trace file, to allow
	people having thousands of CPUs to drop the data into
	a spreadsheet.	Tested with oocalc and gnumeric. Updated
	documentation to suit.

Updates from v8 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/11/15/139):

o	Fix a theoretical race between grace-period initialization and
	force_quiescent_state() that could occur if more than three
	jiffies were required to carry out the grace-period
	initialization. Which it might, if you had enough CPUs.

o	Apply Ingo's printk-standardization patch.

o	Substitute local variables for repeated accesses to global
	variables.

o	Fix comment misspellings and redundant (but harmless) increments
	of ->n_rcu_pending (this latter after having explicitly added it).

o	Apply checkpatch fixes.

Updates from v7 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/10/10/291):

o	Fixed a number of problems noted by Gautham Shenoy, including
	the cpu-stall-detection bug that he was having difficulty
	convincing me was real.  ;-)

o	Changed cpu-stall detection to wait for ten seconds rather than
	three in order to reduce false positive, as suggested by Ingo
	Molnar.

o	Produced a design document (http://lwn.net/Articles/305782/).
	The act of writing this document uncovered a number of both
	theoretical and "here and now" bugs as noted below.

o	Fix dynticks_nesting accounting confusion, simplify WARN_ON()
	condition, fix kerneldoc comments, and add memory barriers
	in dynticks interface functions.

o	Add more data to tracing.

o	Remove unused "rcu_barrier" field from rcu_data structure.

o	Count calls to rcu_pending() from scheduling-clock interrupt
	to use as a surrogate timebase should jiffies stop counting.

o	Fix a theoretical race between force_quiescent_state() and
	grace-period initialization. Yes, initialization does have to
	go on for some jiffies for this race to occur, but given enough
	CPUs...

Updates from v6 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/23/448):

o	Fix a number of checkpatch.pl complaints.

o	Apply review comments from Ingo Molnar and Lai Jiangshan
	on the stall-detection code.

o	Fix several bugs in !CONFIG_SMP builds.

o	Fix a misspelled config-parameter name so that RCU now announces
	at boot time if stall detection is configured.

o	Run tests on numerous combinations of configurations parameters,
	which after the fixes above, now build and run correctly.

Updates from v5 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/9/15/92, bad subject line):

o	Fix a compiler error in the !CONFIG_FANOUT_EXACT case (blew a
	changeset some time ago, and finally got around to retesting
	this option).

o	Fix some tracing bugs in rcupreempt that caused incorrect
	totals to be printed.

o	I now test with a more brutal random-selection online/offline
	script (attached). Probably more brutal than it needs to be
	on the people reading it as well, but so it goes.

o	A number of optimizations and usability improvements:

	o	Make rcu_pending() ignore the grace-period timeout when
		there is no grace period in progress.

	o	Make force_quiescent_state() avoid going for a global
		lock in the case where there is no grace period in
		progress.

	o	Rearrange struct fields to improve struct layout.

	o	Make call_rcu() initiate a grace period if RCU was
		idle, rather than waiting for the next scheduling
		clock interrupt.

	o	Invoke rcu_irq_enter() and rcu_irq_exit() only when
		idle, as suggested by Andi Kleen. I still don't
		completely trust this change, and might back it out.

	o	Make CONFIG_RCU_TRACE be the single config variable
		manipulated for all forms of RCU, instead of the prior
		confusion.

	o	Document tracing files and formats for both rcupreempt
		and rcutree.

Updates from v4 for those missing v5 given its bad subject line:

o	Separated dynticks interface so that NMIs and irqs call separate
	functions, greatly simplifying it. In particular, this code
	no longer requires a proof of correctness. ;-)

o	Separated dynticks state out into its own per-CPU structure,
	avoiding the duplicated accounting.

o	The case where a dynticks-idle CPU runs an irq handler that
	invokes call_rcu() is now correctly handled, forcing that CPU
	out of dynticks-idle mode.

o	Review comments have been applied (thank you all!!!).
	For but one example, fixed the dynticks-ordering issue that
	Manfred pointed out, saving me much debugging. ;-)

o	Adjusted rcuclassic and rcupreempt to handle dynticks changes.

Attached is an updated patch to Classic RCU that applies a hierarchy,
greatly reducing the contention on the top-level lock for large machines.
This passes 10-hour concurrent rcutorture and online-offline testing on
128-CPU ppc64 without dynticks enabled, and exposes some timekeeping
bugs in presence of dynticks (exciting working on a system where
"sleep 1" hangs until interrupted...), which were fixed in the
2.6.27 kernel. It is getting more reliable than mainline by some
measures, so the next version will be against -tip for inclusion.
See also Manfred Spraul's recent patches (or his earlier work from
2004 at http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=108546384711797&w=2).
We will converge onto a common patch in the fullness of time, but are
currently exploring different regions of the design space. That said,
I have already gratefully stolen quite a few of Manfred's ideas.

This patch provides CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT, which controls the bushiness
of the RCU hierarchy. Defaults to 32 on 32-bit machines and 64 on
64-bit machines. If CONFIG_NR_CPUS is less than CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT,
there is no hierarchy. By default, the RCU initialization code will
adjust CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT to balance the hierarchy, so strongly NUMA
architectures may choose to set CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT_EXACT to disable
this balancing, allowing the hierarchy to be exactly aligned to the
underlying hardware. Up to two levels of hierarchy are permitted
(in addition to the root node), allowing up to 16,384 CPUs on 32-bit
systems and up to 262,144 CPUs on 64-bit systems. I just know that I
am going to regret saying this, but this seems more than sufficient
for the foreseeable future. (Some architectures might wish to set
CONFIG_RCU_FANOUT=4, which would limit such architectures to 64 CPUs.
If this becomes a real problem, additional levels can be added, but I
doubt that it will make a significant difference on real hardware.)

In the common case, a given CPU will manipulate its private rcu_data
structure and the rcu_node structure that it shares with its immediate
neighbors. This can reduce both lock and memory contention by multiple
orders of magnitude, which should eliminate the need for the strange
manipulations that are reported to be required when running Linux on
very large systems.

Some shortcomings:

o	More bugs will probably surface as a result of an ongoing
	line-by-line code inspection.

	Patches will be provided as required.

o	There are probably hangs, rcutorture failures, &c. Seems
	quite stable on a 128-CPU machine, but that is kind of small
	compared to 4096 CPUs. However, seems to do better than
	mainline.

	Patches will be provided as required.

o	The memory footprint of this version is several KB larger
	than rcuclassic.

	A separate UP-only rcutiny patch will be provided, which will
	reduce the memory footprint significantly, even compared
	to the old rcuclassic. One such patch passes light testing,
	and has a memory footprint smaller even than rcuclassic.
	Initial reaction from various embedded guys was "it is not
	worth it", so am putting it aside.

4446a36ff8 rcu: add call_rcu_sched()
Fourth cut of patch to provide the call_rcu_sched(). This is again to
synchronize_sched() as call_rcu() is to synchronize_rcu().

Should be fine for experimental and -rt use, but not ready for inclusion.
With some luck, I will be able to tell Andrew to come out of hiding on
the next round.

Passes multi-day rcutorture sessions with concurrent CPU hotplugging.

Fixes since the first version include a bug that could result in
indefinite blocking (spotted by Gautham Shenoy), better resiliency
against CPU-hotplug operations, and other minor fixes.

Fixes since the second version include reworking grace-period detection
to avoid deadlocks that could happen when running concurrently with
CPU hotplug, adding Mathieu's fix to avoid the softlockup messages,
as well as Mathieu's fix to allow use earlier in boot.

Fixes since the third version include a wrong-CPU bug spotted by
Andrew, getting rid of the obsolete synchronize_kernel API that somehow
snuck back in, merging spin_unlock() and local_irq_restore() in a
few places, commenting the code that checks for quiescent states based
on interrupting from user-mode execution or the idle loop, removing
some inline attributes, and some code-style changes.

Known/suspected shortcomings:

o	I still do not entirely trust the sleep/wakeup logic. Next step
	will be to use a private snapshot of the CPU online mask in
	rcu_sched_grace_period() -- if the CPU wasn't there at the start
	of the grace period, we don't need to hear from it. And the
	bit about accounting for changes in online CPUs inside of
	rcu_sched_grace_period() is ugly anyway.

o	It might be good for rcu_sched_grace_period() to invoke
	resched_cpu() when a given CPU wasn't responding quickly,
	but resched_cpu() is declared static...

This patch also fixes a long-standing bug in the earlier preemptable-RCU
implementation of synchronize_rcu() that could result in loss of
concurrent external changes to a task's CPU affinity mask. I still cannot
remember who reported this...

8b09dee67f rcupreempt: remove duplicate prototypes
rcu_batches_completed and rcu_patches_completed_bh are both declared
in rcuclassic.h and rcupreempt.h. This patch removes the extra
prototypes for them from rcupdate.h.

rcu_batches_completed_bh is defined as a static inline in the rcupreempt.h
header file. Trying to export this as EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL causes linking problems
with the powerpc linker. There's no need to export a static inlined function.

d99c4f6b13 Remove rcu_assign_pointer() penalty for NULL pointers
The rcu_assign_pointer() primitive currently unconditionally executes a
memory barrier, even when a NULL pointer is being assigned. This has lead
some to avoid using rcu_assign_pointer() for NULL pointers, which loses the
self-documenting advantages of rcu_assign_pointer() This patch uses
__builtin_const_p() to omit needless memory barriers for NULL-pointer
assignments at compile time with no runtime penalty, as discussed in the
following thread:

e260be673a Preempt-RCU: implementation
This patch implements a new version of RCU which allows its read-side
critical sections to be preempted. It uses a set of counter pairs
to keep track of the read-side critical sections and flips them
when all tasks exit read-side critical section. The details
of this implementation can be found in this paper -

	http://www.rdrop.com/users/paulmck/RCU/OLSrtRCU.2006.08.11a.pdf

and the article-

	http://lwn.net/Articles/253651/

This patch was developed as a part of the -rt kernel development and
meant to provide better latencies when read-side critical sections of
RCU don't disable preemption. As a consequence of keeping track of RCU
readers, the readers have a slight overhead (optimizations in the paper).
This implementation co-exists with the "classic" RCU implementations
and can be switched to at compiler.

Also includes RCU tracing summarized in debugfs.

20e9751bd9 [PATCH] rcu: simplify/improve batch tuning
Kill a hard-to-calculate 'rsinterval' boot parameter and per-cpu
rcu_data.last_rs_qlen. Instead, it adds adds a flag rcu_ctrlblk.signaled,
which records the fact that one of CPUs has sent a resched IPI since the
last rcu_start_batch().

Roughly speaking, we need two rcu_start_batch()s in order to move callbacks
from ->nxtlist to ->donelist. This means that when ->qlen exceeds qhimark
and continues to grow, we should send a resched IPI, and then do it again
after we gone through a quiescent state.

On the other hand, if it was already sent, we don't need to do it again
when another CPU detects overflow of the queue.

21a1ea9eb4 [PATCH] rcu batch tuning
This patch adds new tunables for RCU queue and finished batches. There are
two types of controls - number of completed RCU updates invoked in a batch
(blimit) and monitoring for high rate of incoming RCUs on a cpu (qhimark,
qlowmark).

By default, the per-cpu batch limit is set to a small value. If the input
RCU rate exceeds the high watermark, we do two things - force quiescent
state on all cpus and set the batch limit of the CPU to INTMAX. Setting
batch limit to INTMAX forces all finished RCUs to be processed in one shot.
 If we have more than INTMAX RCUs queued up, then we have bigger problems
anyway. Once the incoming queued RCUs fall below the low watermark, the
batch limit is set to the default.

22fc6eccbf [PATCH] Change maxaligned_in_smp alignemnt macros to internodealigned_in_smp macros
____cacheline_maxaligned_in_smp is currently used to align critical structures
and avoid false sharing. It uses per-arch L1_CACHE_SHIFT_MAX and people find
L1_CACHE_SHIFT_MAX useless.

However, we have been using ____cacheline_maxaligned_in_smp to align
structures on the internode cacheline size. As per Andi's suggestion,
following patch kills ____cacheline_maxaligned_in_smp and introduces
INTERNODE_CACHE_SHIFT, which defaults to L1_CACHE_SHIFT for all arches.
Arches needing L3/Internode cacheline alignment can define
INTERNODE_CACHE_SHIFT in the arch asm/cache.h. Patch replaces
____cacheline_maxaligned_in_smp with ____cacheline_internodealigned_in_smp

ab4720ec76 [PATCH] add rcu_barrier() synchronization point
This introduces a new interface - rcu_barrier() which waits until all
the RCUs queued until this call have been completed.

Reiser4 needs this, because we do more than just freeing memory object
in our RCU callback: we also remove it from the list hanging off
super-block. This means, that before freeing reiser4-specific portion
of super-block (during umount) we have to wait until all pending RCU
callbacks are executed.

The only change of reiser4 made to the original patch, is exporting of

This patch is a rewrite of the one submitted on October 1st, using modules
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=112819093522998&w=2).

This rewrite adds a tristate CONFIG_RCU_TORTURE_TEST, which enables an
intense torture test of the RCU infratructure. This is needed due to the
continued changes to the RCU infrastructure to accommodate dynamic ticks,
CPU hotplug, realtime, and so on. Most of the code is in a separate file
that is compiled only if the CONFIG variable is set. Documentation on how
to run the test and interpret the output is also included.

 Randwrite       445.74          9.15    446.4           9.75

 The performance improvement is very significant.
 We are getting killed by the cacheline bouncing of the files_struct
 lock here. Writes on ramdisk (ext2) seems to vary just too
 much to get any meaningful number.

 Also, With Tridge's thread_perf test on a 4(8)-way (HT) P4 xeon system :

 Running test 'readwrite' with 8 tasks
 Threads     0.34 +/- 0.01 seconds

 2.6.12-rc5-fd :

 Running test 'readwrite' with 8 tasks
 Threads     0.17 +/- 0.02 seconds

 I repeated the measurements on ramfs (as opposed to ext2 on ramdisk in

 Running test 'readwrite' with 4 tasks

 The benefits are huge (upto ~60%) in some cases on x86 primarily
 due to the atomic operations during acquisition of ->file_lock
 and cache line bouncing in fast path. ppc64 benefits are modest
 due to LL/SC based locking, but still statistically significant.

This patch:

RCU head initilizer no longer needs the head varible name since we don't use
list.h lists anymore.

9b06e81898 [PATCH] Deprecate synchronize_kernel, GPL replacement
The synchronize_kernel() primitive is used for quite a few different purposes:
waiting for RCU readers, waiting for NMIs, waiting for interrupts, and so on.
This makes RCU code harder to read, since synchronize_kernel() might or might
not have matching rcu_read_lock()s. This patch creates a new
synchronize_rcu() that is to be used for RCU readers and a new
synchronize_sched() that is used for the rest. These two new primitives
currently have the same implementation, but this is might well change with
additional real-time support. Both new primitives are GPL-only, the old
primitive is deprecated.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.

Let it rip!
