5dd4056db8 dquot: cleanup space allocation / freeing routines
Get rid of the alloc_space, free_space, reserve_space, claim_space and
release_rsv dquot operations - they are always called from the filesystem
and if a filesystem really needs their own (which none currently does)
it can just call into it's own routine directly.

Move shared logic into the common __dquot_alloc_space,
dquot_claim_space_nodirty and __dquot_free_space low-level methods,
and rationalize the wrappers around it to move as much as possible
code into the common block for CONFIG_QUOTA vs not.  Also rename
all these helpers to be named dquot_* instead of vfs_dq_*.

6d729e44a5 fs: Make unload_nls() NULL pointer safe

18f4c64477 jffs2/jfs/xfs: switch over to 'check_acl' rather than 'permission()'
This avoids an indirect call in the VFS for each path component lookup.

Well, at least as long as you own the directory in question, and the ACL
check is unnecessary.

4a19fb11a9 jfs: Fix early release of acl in jfs_get_acl
BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/396780

Commit 073aaa1b14 "helpers for acl
caching + switch to those" introduced new helper functions for
acl handling but seems to have introduced a regression for jfs as
the acl is released before returning it to the caller, instead of
leaving this for the caller to do.
This causes the acl object to be used after freeing it, leading
to kernel panics in completely different places.

Thanks to Christophe Dumez for reporting and bisecting into this.

f7c52fd17a jfs: fix regression preventing coalescing of extents
Commit fec1878fe9 caused a regression in
which contiguous blocks being allocated to the end of an extent were
getting a new extent created.  This typically results in files entirely
made up of 1-block extents even though the blocks are contiguous on
disk.

Apparently grub doesn't handle a jfs file being fragmented into too many
extents, since it refuses to boot a kernel from jfs that was created by
the 2.6.30 kernel.

6cfd014842 push BKL down into ->put_super
Move BKL into ->put_super from the only caller.  A couple of
filesystems had trivial enough ->put_super (only kfree and NULLing of
s_fs_info + stuff in there) to not get any locking: coda, cramfs, efs,
hugetlbfs, omfs, qnx4, shmem, all others got the full treatment.  Most
of them probably don't need it, but I'd rather sort that out individually.
Preferably after all the other BKL pushdowns in that area.

[AV: original used to move lock_super() down as well; these changes are
removed since we don't do lock_super() at all in generic_shutdown_super()
now]

9c83633ad3 missing unlock in jfs_quota_write()
We should unlock &inode->i_mutex on the error path.  This bug was
in ext2_quota_write().  I sent a patch to them today as well.

99b7623380 proc 2/2: remove struct proc_dir_entry::owner
Setting ->owner as done currently (pde->owner = THIS_MODULE) is racy
as correctly noted at bug #12454. Someone can lookup entry with NULL
->owner, thus not pinning enything, and release it later resulting
in module refcount underflow.

We can keep ->owner and supply it at registration time like ->proc_fops
and ->data.

But this leaves ->owner as easy-manipulative field (just one C assignment)
and somebody will forget to unpin previous/pin current module when
switching ->owner. ->proc_fops is declared as "const" which should give
some thoughts.

->read_proc/->write_proc were just fixed to not require ->owner for
protection.

rmmod'ed directories will be empty and return "." and ".." -- no harm.
And directories with tricky enough readdir and lookup shouldn't be modular.
We definitely don't want such modular code.

Removing ->owner will also make PDE smaller.

So, let's nuke it.

Kudos to Jeff Layton for reminding about this, let's say, oversight.

c4be0c1dc4 filesystem freeze: add error handling of write_super_lockfs/unlockfs
Currently, ext3 in mainline Linux doesn't have the freeze feature which
suspends write requests.  So, we cannot take a backup which keeps the
filesystem's consistency with the storage device's features (snapshot and
replication) while it is mounted.

In many case, a commercial filesystem (e.g.  VxFS) has the freeze feature
and it would be used to get the consistent backup.

If Linux's standard filesystem ext3 has the freeze feature, we can do it
without a commercial filesystem.

So I have implemented the ioctls of the freeze feature.
I think we can take the consistent backup with the following steps.
1. Freeze the filesystem with the freeze ioctl.
2. Separate the replication volume or create the snapshot
   with the storage device's feature.
3. Unfreeze the filesystem with the unfreeze ioctl.
4. Take the backup from the separated replication volume
   or the snapshot.

This patch:

VFS:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that they can return an error.
Rename write_super_lockfs and unlockfs of the super block operation
freeze_fs and unfreeze_fs to avoid a confusion.

ext3, ext4, xfs, gfs2, jfs:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that write_super_lockfs returns an error if needed,
and unlockfs always returns 0.

reiserfs:
Changed the type of write_super_lockfs and unlockfs from "void"
to "int" so that they always return 0 (success) to keep a current behavior.

fec1878fe9 jfs: remove xtLookupList()
xtLookupList() was a more generalized version of xtLookup() with a
nastier interface.  Its only caller, extHint(), is actually better
suited to using xtLookup() than xtLookupList().  This also lets us
remove the definition of lxd_t, an obnoxious packed structure that was
only used in-memory.

Wrap access to task credentials so that they can be separated more easily from
the task_struct during the introduction of COW creds.

Change most current->(|e|s|fs)[ug]id to current_(|e|s|fs)[ug]id().

Change some task->e?[ug]id to task_e?[ug]id().  In some places it makes more
sense to use RCU directly rather than a convenient wrapper; these will be
addressed by later patches.

a447c09324 vfs: Use const for kernel parser table
This is a much better version of a previous patch to make the parser
tables constant. Rather than changing the typedef, we put the "const" in
all the various places where its required, allowing the __initconst
exception for nfsroot which was the cause of the previous trouble.

This was posted for review some time ago and I believe its been in -mm
since then.

51cc50685a SL*B: drop kmem cache argument from constructor
Kmem cache passed to constructor is only needed for constructors that are
themselves multiplexeres.  Nobody uses this "feature", nor does anybody uses
passed kmem cache in non-trivial way, so pass only pointer to object.

Non-trivial places are:
	arch/powerpc/mm/init_64.c
	arch/powerpc/mm/hugetlbpage.c

This is flag day, yes.

74abb9890d quota: move function-macros from quota.h to quotaops.h

eab1df71a0 iget: stop JFS from using iget() and read_inode()
Stop the JFS filesystem from using iget() and read_inode().  Replace
jfs_read_inode() with jfs_iget(), and call that instead of iget().  jfs_iget()
then uses iget_locked() directly and returns a proper error code instead of an
inode in the event of an error.

jfs_fill_super() returns any error incurred when getting the root inode
instead of EINVAL.

54af6233d1 JFS is missing a memory barrier
JFS is missing a memory barrier needed to close the critical section before
clearing the lock bit. Use lock bitops for this.

unlock_page() has a second barrier after clearing the lock, which is
required because it checks whether the waitqueue is active without locks.
Such a barrier is not required here because the waitqueue spinlock is
always taken (something to think about if performance is an issue).

29a424f283 JFS: clear PAGECACHE_TAG_DIRTY for no-write pages
When JFS decides to drop a dirty metapage, it simply clears the META_dirty
bit and leave alone the PG_dirty and PAGECACHE_TAG_DIRTY bits.

When such no-write page goes to metapage_writepage(), the `relic'
PAGECACHE_TAG_DIRTY tag should be cleared, to prevent pdflush from
repeatedly trying to sync them.  This is done through
set_page_writeback(), so call it should be called in all cases.  If
no I/O is initiated, end_page_writeback() should be called immediately.

This is how __block_write_full_page() does things.

Forbid user from changing file flags on quota files.  User has no bussiness
in playing with these flags when quota is on.  Furthermore there is a
remote possibility of deadlock due to a lock inversion between quota file's
i_mutex and transaction's start (i_mutex for quota file is locked only when
trasaction is started in quota operations) in ext3 and ext4.

I_LOCK was used for several unrelated purposes, which caused deadlock
situations in certain filesystems as a side effect.  One of the purposes
now uses the new I_SYNC bit.

03158cd7eb fs: restore nobh
Implement nobh in new aops.  This is a bit tricky.  FWIW, nobh_truncate is
now implemented in a way that does not create blocks in sparse regions,
which is a silly thing for it to have been doing (isn't it?)

ext2 survives fsx and fsstress. jfs is converted as well... ext3
should be easy to do (but not done yet).

6712ecf8f6 Drop 'size' argument from bio_endio and bi_end_io
As bi_end_io is only called once when the reqeust is complete,
the 'size' argument is now redundant.  Remove it.

Now there is no need for bio_endio to subtract the size completed
from bi_size.  So don't do that either.

While we are at it, change bi_end_io to return void.

20c2df83d2 mm: Remove slab destructors from kmem_cache_create().
Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's
c59def9f22 change. They've been
BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them
either.

This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create()
completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were
about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves,
or the documentation references).

3bd858ab1c Introduce is_owner_or_cap() to wrap CAP_FOWNER use with fsuid check
Introduce is_owner_or_cap() macro in fs.h, and convert over relevant
users to it. This is done because we want to avoid bugs in the future
where we check for only effective fsuid of the current task against a
file's owning uid, without simultaneously checking for CAP_FOWNER as
well, thus violating its semantics.
[ XFS uses special macros and structures, and in general looked ...
untouchable, so we leave it alone -- but it has been looked over. ]

The (current->fsuid != inode->i_uid) check in generic_permission() and
exec_permission_lite() is left alone, because those operations are
covered by CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE and CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH. Similarly operations
falling under the purview of CAP_CHOWN and CAP_LEASE are also left alone.

5ca2960733 knfsd: exportfs: remove iget abuse
When the exportfs interface was added the expectation was that filesystems
provide an operation to convert from a file handle to an inode/dentry, but it
kept a backwards compat option that still calls into iget.

Calling into iget from non-filesystem code is very bad, because it gives too
little information to filesystem, and simply crashes if the filesystem doesn't
implement the ->read_inode routine.

Fortunately there are only two filesystems left using this fallback: efs and
jfs.  This patch moves a copy of export_iget to each of those to implement the
get_dentry method.

While this is a temporary increase of lines of code in the kernel it allows
for a much cleaner interface and important code restructuring in later
patches.

50953fe9e0 slab allocators: Remove SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL flag
I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL.  It is only supported by
SLAB.

I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed
to verify that the state is the constructor state again?  The callback is
performed before each freeing of an object.

I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually
before the free.  That also places the check near the code object
manipulation of the object.

Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was
compiled with SLAB debugging on.  If there would be code in a constructor
handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on
SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code.  But there is no such code
in the kernel.  I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real
use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the
same effect (i.e.  add debug code before kfree).

There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be
clear in fs inode caches.  Remove the pointless checks (they would even be
pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.

This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support.  Remove the check for
unimplemented flags from SLUB.

05ec9e26be JFS: Fix race waking up jfsIO kernel thread
It's possible for a journal I/O request to be added to the log_redrive
queue and the jfsIO thread to be awakened after the thread releases
log_redrive_lock but before it sets its state to TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE.

The jfsIO thread should set the state before giving up the spinlock, so
the waking thread will really wake it.

3e2221c73c Copy i_flags to jfs inode flags on write
This mirrors Jan Kara's patches for ext3.  This patch makes sure that
changes made to inode->i_flags are reflected on disk for jfs.  It also
moves a call of jfs_set_inode_flags() to be more consistent with where
jfs_get_inode_flags() is called.

moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential

7220c0177b JFS: Remove incorrect kgdb define
jfs_debug.h uses an incorrect CONFIG_KERNEL_ASSERT ifdef to redefine the
assert macro for kgdb use.  I believe the code worked a long time ago, but
today it's not a valid config option.  Since I'm not aware of anybody
interested in debugging jfs with kgdb, it should just be removed.

4aa0d230c2 JFS: call io_schedule() instead of schedule() to avoid deadlock
The introduction of Jens Axboe's explicit i/o plugging patches introduced a
deadlock in jfs.  This was caused by the process initiating I/O not
unplugging the queue before waiting on the commit thread.  The commit
thread itself was waiting for that I/O to complete.  Calling io_schedule()
rather than schedule() unplugs the I/O queue avoiding the deadlock, and it
appears to be the right function to call in any case.

d0e671a932 [PATCH] Fix JFS after clear_page_dirty() removal
This patch removes some questionable code that attempted to make a
no-longer-used page easier to reclaim.

Calling metapage_writepage against such a page will not result in any
I/O being performed, so removing this code shouldn't be a big deal.

[ It's likely that we could have just replaced the "clear_page_dirty()"
  call with a call to "cancel_dirty_page()" instead, but in the
  meantime this is cleaner and simpler anyway, so unless there is some
  overriding reason (and Dave implies there isn't) I'll just use this

087387f90f [PATCH] JFS: return correct error when i-node allocation failed
I have seen confusing behavior on JFS when I injected many intentional
slab allocation errors. The cp command failed with no disk space error
with enough disk space.

This patch makes:

- change the return value in case slab allocation failures happen
  from -ENOSPC to -ENOMEM

- ialloc() return error code so that the caller can know the reason
  of failures

9a53c3a783 [PATCH] r/o bind mounts: unlink: monitor i_nlink
When a filesystem decrements i_nlink to zero, it means that a write must be
performed in order to drop the inode from the filesystem.

We're shortly going to have keep filesystems from being remounted r/o between
the time that this i_nlink decrement and that write occurs.

So, add a little helper function to do the decrements.  We'll tie into it in a
bit to note when i_nlink hits zero.

This patch cleans up generic_file_*_read/write() interfaces.  Christoph
Hellwig gave me the idea for this clean ups.

In a nutshell, all filesystems should set .aio_read/.aio_write methods and use
do_sync_read/ do_sync_write() as their .read/.write methods.  This allows us
to cleanup all variants of generic_file_* routines.

Final available interfaces:

generic_file_aio_read() - read handler
generic_file_aio_write() - write handler
generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - no lock write handler

__generic_file_aio_write_nolock() - internal worker routine

ba52de123d [PATCH] inode-diet: Eliminate i_blksize from the inode structure
This eliminates the i_blksize field from struct inode.  Filesystems that want
to provide a per-inode st_blksize can do so by providing their own getattr
routine instead of using the generic_fillattr() function.

Note that some filesystems were providing pretty much random (and incorrect)
values for i_blksize.

726c334223 [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentry
Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock
pointer.

This complements the get_sb() patch.  That reduced the significance of
sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there.  However, NFS does
require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation.  This permits
the root in the vfsmount to be used instead.

linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build
successfully.

Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems.

454e2398be [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to override root dentry on mount
Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.

The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
pointers.  For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).

The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
superblock pointer.

This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing.  In
such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
and mnt_sb would be set directly.

The patch also makes the following changes:

 (*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
     pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
     very little.

 (*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
     normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
     always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().

 (*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
     dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().

     This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
     aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
     currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
     and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
     dentries being left unculled.

     However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
     implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
     simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
     inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
     with child trees.

     [*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.

 (*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
     changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

b964638ffd JFS: Fix multiple errors in metapage_releasepage
It looks like metapage_releasepage was making in invalid assumption that
the releasepage method would not be called on a dirty page.  Instead of
issuing a warning and releasing the metapage, it should return 0, indicating
that the private data for the page cannot be released.

I also realized that metapage_releasepage had the return code all wrong.  If
it is successful in releasing the private data, it should return 1, otherwise
it needs to return 0.

Lastly, there is no need to call wait_on_page_writeback, since
try_to_release_page will not call us with a page in writback state.

This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/
const.  Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups

The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to
shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with
things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus
cache clean)

fa30bd058b [PATCH] map multiple blocks for mpage_readpages()
This patch changes mpage_readpages() and get_block() to get the disk mapping
information for multiple blocks at the same time.

b_size represents the amount of disk mapping that needs to mapped.  On the
successful get_block() b_size indicates the amount of disk mapping thats
actually mapped.  Only the filesystems who care to use this information and
provide multiple disk blocks at a time can choose to do so.

No changes are needed for the filesystems who wants to ignore this.

Mark file system inode and similar slab caches subject to SLAB_MEM_SPREAD
memory spreading.

If a slab cache is marked SLAB_MEM_SPREAD, then anytime that a task that's
in a cpuset with the 'memory_spread_slab' option enabled goes to allocate
from such a slab cache, the allocations are spread evenly over all the
memory nodes (task->mems_allowed) allowed to that task, instead of favoring

The choice of which slab caches to so mark was quite simple.  I marked
those already marked SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT, except for fs/xfs, dentry_cache,
inode_cache, and buffer_head, which were marked in a previous patch.  Even
though SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT is for a different purpose, it marks the same
potentially large file system i/o related slab caches as we need for memory
spreading.

Given that the rule now becomes "wherever you would have used a
SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT slab cache flag before (usually the inode cache), use
the SLAB_MEM_SPREAD flag too", this should be easy enough to maintain.
Future file system writers will just copy one of the existing file system
slab cache setups and tend to get it right without thinking.

69eb66d7da JFS: add uid, gid, and umask mount options
OS/2 doesn't initialize the uid, gid, or unix-style permission bits.  The
uid, gid, & umask mount options perform pretty much like those for the fat
file system, overriding what is stored on disk.  This is useful for users
sharing the file system with OS/2.

I implemented a little feature so that if you mask the execute bit, it
will be re-enabled on directories when the appropriate read bit is unmasked.
I didn't want to implement an fmask & dmask option.
