f2fs-for-4.18-rc1
In this round, we've mainly focused on discard, aka unmap, control along with fstrim for Android-specific usage model. In addition, we've fixed writepage flow which returned EAGAIN previously resulting in EIO of fsync(2) due to mapping's error state. In order to avoid old MM bug [1], we decided not to use __GFP_ZERO for the mapping for node and meta page caches. As always, we've cleaned up many places for future fsverity and symbol conflicts. Enhancement: - do discard/fstrim in lower priority considering fs utilization - split large discard commands into smaller ones for better responsiveness - add more sanity checks to address syzbot reports - add a mount option, fsync_mode=nobarrier, which can reduce # of cache flushes - clean up symbol namespace with modified function names - be strict on block allocation and IO control in corner cases Bug fix: - don't use __GFP_ZERO for mappings - fix error reports in writepage to avoid fsync() failure - avoid selinux denial on CAP_RESOURCE on resgid/resuid - fix some subtle race conditions in GC/atomic writes/shutdown - fix overflow bugs in sanity_check_raw_super - fix missing bits on get_flags Clean-up: - prepare the generic flow for future fsverity integration - fix some broken coding standard [1] https://lkml.org/lkml/2018/4/8/661 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCAAdFiEE00UqedjCtOrGVvQiQBSofoJIUNIFAlsepb8ACgkQQBSofoJI UNJdSw/+IhrYJFkJEN/pV4M5xSjYirl/P2WJ4AGi6HcpjEGmaDiBi2whod1Jw2NE 1auSMiby7K91VAmPvxMmmLhOdC8XgJ8jwY1nEaZMfmMXohlaD3FDY5bzYf5rJDF4 J184P6xUZ2IKlFVA4prwNQgYi3awPthVu1lxbFPp8GUHDbmr5ZXEysxPDzz2O0Em oE7WmklmyCHJPhmg/EcVXfF/Ekf3zMOVR+EI2otcDjnWIQioVetIK8CKi0MM4bkG X8Z318ANjGTd42woupXIzsiTrMRONY7zzkUvE+S6tfUjKZoIdofDM5OIXMdOxpxL DZ53WrwfeB74igD8jDZgqD6OaonIfDfCuKrwUASFAC2Ou4h3apj3ckUzoHtAhEUL z5yTSKTrtfuoSufhBp+nKKs3ijDgms76arw8x/pPdN6D6xDwIJtBPxC2sObPaj35 damv4GyM4+sbhGO/Gbie2q6za55IvYFZc7JNCC2D2K5tnBmUaa7/XdvxcyigniGk AZgkaddHePkAZpa5AYYirZR8bd7IFds0+m6VcybG0/pYb0qPEcI6U4mujBSCIwVy kXuD7su3jNjj6hWnCl5PSQo8yBWS5H8c6/o+5XHozzYA91dsLAmD8entuCreg6Hp NaIFio0qKULweLK86f66qQTsRPMpYRAtqPS0Ew0+3llKMcrlRp4= =JrW7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'f2fs-for-4.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/jaegeuk/f2fs Pull f2fs updates from Jaegeuk Kim: "In this round, we've mainly focused on discard, aka unmap, control along with fstrim for Android-specific usage model. Staging/IIO patches for 4.18-rc1
Here is the big staging and IIO driver update for 4.18-rc1. It was delayed as I wanted to make sure the final driver deletions did not cause any major merge issues, and all now looks good. There are a lot of patches here, just over 1000. The diffstat summary shows the major changes here: 1007 files changed, 16828 insertions(+), 227770 deletions(-) Because of this, we might be close to shrinking the overall kernel source code size for two releases in a row. There was loads of work in this release cycle, primarily: - tons of ks7010 driver cleanups - lots of mt7621 driver fixes and cleanups - most driver cleanups - wilc1000 fixes and cleanups - lots and lots of IIO driver cleanups and new additions - debugfs cleanups for all staging drivers - lots of other staging driver cleanups and fixes, the shortlog has the full details. but the big user-visable things here are the removal of 3 chunks of code: - ncpfs and ipx were removed on schedule, no one has cared about this code since it moved to staging last year, and if it needs to come back, it can be reverted. - lustre file system is removed. I've ranted at the lustre developers about once a year for the past 5 years, with no real forward progress at all to clean things up and get the code into the "real" part of the kernel. Given that the lustre developers continue to work on an external tree and try to port those changes to the in-kernel tree every once in a while, this whole thing really really is not working out at all. So I'm deleting it so that the developers can spend the time working in their out-of-tree location and get things cleaned up properly to get merged into the tree correctly at a later date. Because of these file removals, you will have merge issues on some of these files (2 in the ipx code, 1 in the ncpfs code, and 1 in the atomisp driver). Just delete those files, it's a simple merge :) All of this has been in linux-next for a while with no reported problems. libnvdimm for 4.18
* DAX broke a fundamental assumption of truncate of file mapped pages. The truncate path assumed that it is safe to disconnect a pinned page from a file and let the filesystem reclaim the physical block. With DAX the page is equivalent to the filesystem block. Introduce dax_layout_busy_page() to enable filesystems to wait for pinned DAX pages to be released. Without this wait a filesystem could allocate blocks under active device-DMA to a new file. * DAX arranges for the block layer to be bypassed and uses dax_direct_access() + copy_to_iter() to satisfy read(2) calls. However, the memcpy_mcsafe() facility is available through the pmem block driver. In order to safely handle media errors, via the DAX block-layer bypass, introduce copy_to_iter_mcsafe(). * Fix cache management policy relative to the ACPI NFIT Platform Capabilities Structure to properly elide cache flushes when they are not necessary. The table indicates whether CPU caches are power-fail protected. Clarify that a deep flush is always performed on REQ_{FUA,PREFLUSH} requests. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIcBAABAgAGBQJbGxI7AAoJEB7SkWpmfYgCDjsP/2Lcibu9Kf4tKIzuInsle6iE 6qP29qlkpHVTpDKbhvIxTYTYL9sMU0DNUrpPCJR/EYdeyztLWDFC5EAT1wF240vf maV37s/uP331jSC/2VJnKWzBs2ztQxmKLEIQCxh6aT0qs9cbaOvJgB/WlVu+qtsl aGJFLmb6vdQacp31noU5plKrMgMA1pADyF5qx9I9K2HwowHE7T368ZEFS/3S//c3 LXmpx/Nfq52sGu/qbRbu6B1CTJhIGhmarObyQnvBYoKntK1Ov4e8DS95wD3EhNDe FuRkOCUKhjl6cFy7QVWh1ct1bFm84ny+b4/AtbpOmv9l/+0mveJ7e+5mu8HQTifT wYiEe2xzXJ+OG/xntv8SvlZKMpjP3BqI0jYsTutsjT4oHrciiXdXM186cyS+BiGp KtFmWyncQJgfiTq6+Hj5XpP9BapNS+OYdYgUagw9ZwzdzptuGFYUMSVOBrYrn6c/ fwqtxjubykJoW0P3pkIoT91arFSea7nxOKnGwft06imQ7TwR4ARsI308feQ9itJq 2P2e7/20nYMsw2aRaUDDA70Yu+Lagn1m8WL87IybUGeUDLb1BAkjphAlWa6COJ+u PhvAD2tvyM9m0c7O5Mytvz7iWKG6SVgatoAyOPkaeplQK8khZ+wEpuK58sO6C1w8 4GBvt9ri9i/Ww/A+ppWs =4bfw -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'libnvdimm-for-4.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/nvdimm/nvdimm Pull libnvdimm updates from Dan Williams: "This adds a user for the new 'bytes-remaining' updates to memcpy_mcsafe() that you already received through Ingo via the x86-dax- for-linus pull. powerpc updates for 4.18
Notable changes: - Support for split PMD page table lock on 64-bit Book3S (Power8/9). - Add support for HAVE_RELIABLE_STACKTRACE, so we properly support live patching again. - Add support for patching barrier_nospec in copy_from_user() and syscall entry. - A couple of fixes for our data breakpoints on Book3S. - A series from Nick optimising TLB/mm handling with the Radix MMU. - Numerous small cleanups to squash sparse/gcc warnings from Mathieu Malaterre. - Several series optimising various parts of the 32-bit code from Christophe Leroy. - Removal of support for two old machines, "SBC834xE" and "C2K" ("GEFanuc,C2K"), which is why the diffstat has so many deletions. And many other small improvements & fixes. There's a few out-of-area changes. Some minor ftrace changes OK'ed by Steve, and a fix to our powernv cpuidle driver. Then there's a series touching mm, x86 and fs/proc/task_mmu.c, which cleans up some details around pkey support. It was ack'ed/reviewed by Ingo & Dave and has been in next for several weeks. acpi, nfit: Remove ecc_unit_size
The "Clear Error Unit" may be smaller than the ECC unit size on some devices. For example, poison may be tracked at 64-byte alignment even though the ECC unit is larger. Unless / until the ACPI specification provides a non-ambiguous way to communicate this property do not expose this to userspace. Software that had been using this property must already be prepared for the case where the property is not provided on older kernels, so it is safe to remove this attribute. cxl: Disable prefault_mode in Radix mode
Currently we see a kernel-oops reported on Power-9 while attaching a
context to an AFU, with radix-mode and sysfs attr 'prefault_mode' set
to anything other than 'none'. The backtrace of the oops is of this
form:

The issue is caused as on Power-8 the AFU attr 'prefault_mode' was
used to improve initial storage fault performance by prefaulting
process segments. However on Power-9 with radix mode we don't have
Storage-Segments that we can prefault. Also prefaulting process Pages
will be too costly and fine-grained.
Hence, since the prefaulting mechanism doesn't makes sense of
radix-mode, this patch updates prefault_mode_store() to not allow any
other value apart from CXL_PREFAULT_NONE when radix mode is enabled.

usb: hub: Per-port setting to use old enumeration scheme
The "old" enumeration scheme is considerably faster (it takes ~244ms instead of ~356ms to get the descriptor). It is currently only possible to use the old scheme globally (/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first), which is not desirable as the new scheme was introduced to increase compatibility with more devices. However, in our case, we care about time-to-active for a specific USB device (which we make the firmware for), on a specific port (that is pogo-pin based: not a standard USB port). This new sysfs option makes it possible to use the old scheme on a single port only. ima: define a new policy condition based on the filesystem name
If/when file data signatures are distributed with the file data, this patch will not be needed. In the current environment where only some files are signed, the ability to differentiate between file systems is needed. Some file systems consider the file system magic number internal to the file system. This patch defines a new IMA policy condition named "fsname", based on the superblock's file_system_type (sb->s_type) name. This allows policy rules to be expressed in terms of the filesystem name. The following sample rules require file signatures on rootfs files executed or mmap'ed. appraise func=BPRM_CHECK fsname=rootfs appraise_type=imasig appraise func=FILE_MMAP fsname=rootfs appraise_type=imasig Signed-off-by: Mimi Zohar <zohar@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Cc: Dave Chinner <david@fromorbit.com> Cc: Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu> |

EVM: Allow runtime modification of the set of verified xattrs
Sites may wish to provide additional metadata alongside files in order to make more fine-grained security decisions[1]. The security of this is enhanced if this metadata is protected, something that EVM makes possible. However, the kernel cannot know about the set of extended attributes that local admins may wish to protect, and hardcoding this policy in the kernel makes it difficult to change over time and less convenient for distributions to enable. This patch adds a new /sys/kernel/security/integrity/evm/evm_xattrs node, which can be read to obtain the current set of EVM-protected extended attributes or written to in order to add new entries. Extending this list will not change the validity of any existing signatures provided that the file in question does not have any of the additional extended attributes - missing xattrs are skipped when calculating the EVM hash. [1] For instance, a package manager could install information about the package uploader in an additional extended attribute. Local LSM policy could then be associated with that extended attribute in order to restrict the privileges available to packages from less trusted uploaders. 1st round of IIO new device support, features and cleanup for the 4.18 cycle
A nice mix this time of excellent cleanups (many to send drivers speeding toward staging graduations) and new drivers / device support. A good part of this is Brian Masney's never ending task on the tsl2x7x driver. The end is in sight so hopefully we'll get that one out of staging very soon! New device support * AD5686 - Support AD5685R (was wrongly present as AD5685) - Support AD5672R, AD5676, AD5676, AD5684R and AD5686R 4 and 8 channel SPI DACs with various precisions. - Support AD5671R, AD5675R, AD5694, AD5694R, AD5695R, AD5696 and AD5696R I2C DACs with various percisions and numbers of channels. * Analog front end rescale driver - New driver. - Support current sensing usings a shunt resistor. - Support simple voltage dividers. - support simple current sense amplifiers. * TI dac5571 - New driver and device bindings supporting: dac5571, dac6571, dac7571, dac5574, dac6574, dac7574, dac5573, dac6573 and dac7573 * Meson-adc - Support for Meson AXG with DT bindings. * mpu6050 - Support the mpu9255 which only requires additional WHOAMI entry and compatible string. * st_lsm6dsx - Support for lsm330dlc combinded accelerometer and gyro sensors with DT bindings. * stm32_adc - Add support for STM32MP1 with bindings. Staging graduations * adis16201 after some excelent cleanup by Himanshu Jha. * adis16029 after some excelent cleanup by Shreeya Patel. New features: * ABI docs - Add core ABI docs for angle channels. * inv_mpu6050 - Provide support for the full range of interrupts the device supports. * st_accel - Add SMO8840 ACPI ID seen in the wild on some Lenovo machines. * stx104 - Provide a multiple gpio get function. Cleanups / Minor fixes * core - Use new nested structure support to improve kernel-doc. * ad2s1200 - Use be16_to_cpup instead of opencoding. * ad5686 - Indentation tidy up. - Switch to SPDX - Refactor to allow various numbers of channels. - Refactor to separate core and SPI specific support, prior to addition of i2c equivalent devices. * ad7606 - Use drvdata directly from device rather than boucing via the platform_device structure. * ad7746 - Replace opencoded byte swapped i2c calls with _swapped variants. - White space and line break readability improvements. - Reorder includes and variable declarations where appropriate. * ad7791 - Changes to the AD ADC library used by this driver took in the sampling frequency. This lead to be the wrong path being the one tied to the resulting attribute, so it didn't work, and a warning to be printed. * ad7780 - Remove apparent support for sampling frequency control on devices that don't support changing the sampling attributes. * |

power: supply: Add 'usb_type' property and supporting code
This commit adds the 'usb_type' property to represent USB supplies which can report a number of different types based on a connection event. Examples of this already exist in drivers whereby the existing 'type' property is updated, based on an event, to represent what was connected (e.g. USB, USB_DCP, USB_ACA, ...). Current implementations however don't show all supported connectable types, so this knowledge has to be exlicitly known for each driver that supports this. The 'usb_type' property is intended to fill this void and show users all possible USB types supported by a driver. The property, when read, shows all available types for the driver, and the one currently chosen is highlighted/bracketed. It is expected that the 'type' property would then just show the top-level type 'USB', and this would be static. Currently the 'usb_type' enum contains all of the USB variant types that exist for the 'type' enum at this time, and in addition has SDP and PPS types. The mirroring is intentional so as to not impact existing usage of the 'type' property. Staging/IIO patches for 4.17-rc1
Here is the big set of Staging/IIO driver patches for 4.17-rc1. It is a lot, over 500 changes, but not huge by previous kernel release standards. We deleted more lines than we added again (27k added vs. 91k remvoed), thanks to finally being able to delete the IRDA drivers and networking code. We also deleted the ccree crypto driver, but that's coming back in through the crypto tree to you, in a much cleaned-up form. Added this round is at lot of "mt7621" device support, which is for an embedded device that Neil Brown cares about, and of course a handful of new IIO drivers as well. And finally, the fsl-mc core code moved out of the staging tree to the "real" part of the kernel, which is nice to see happen as well. Full details are in the shortlog, which has all of the tiny cleanup patches described. All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. USB/PHY patches for 4.17-rc1
Here is the big set of USB and PHY driver patches for 4.17-rc1. Lots of USB typeC work happened this round, with code moving from the staging directory into the "real" part of the kernel, as well as new infrastructure being added to be able to handle the different types of "roles" that typeC requires. There is also the normal huge set of USB gadget controller and driver updates, along with XHCI changes, and a raft of other tiny fixes all over the USB tree.
