This code is based on commit 6bab2e19c5
("cfg80211: pass name_assign_type to rdev_add_virtual_intf()")
This will expose in sysfs whether the ifname of a IEEE-802.15.4
device is set by userspace or generated by the kernel.
We are using two types of name_assign_types
o NET_NAME_ENUM: Default interface name provided by kernel
o NET_NAME_USER: Interface name provided by user.

Currently there exists two interface types with ARPHRD_IEEE802154. These
are the 802.15.4 interfaces and 802.15.4 6LoWPAN interfaces. This is
more a bug because some userspace applications checks on this value like
wireshark. This occurs that wireshark will always try to parse a lowpan
interface as 802.15.4 frames. With ARPHRD_6LOWPAN wireshark will parse
it as IPv6 frames which is correct.
Much applications checks on this value to readout the EUI64 mac address
which should be the same for ARPHRD_6LOWPAN. BTLE 6LoWPAN and ieee802154
6LoWPAN will share now the same ARPHRD.

After TIPC doesn't depend on iocb argument in its internal
implementations of sendmsg() and recvmsg() hooks defined in proto
structure, no any user is using iocb argument in them at all now.
Then we can drop the redundant iocb argument completely from kinds of
implementations of both sendmsg() and recvmsg() in the entire
networking stack.

With this patch, we ensure that:
- the wpan interface cannot be moved to another netns;
- the 6lowpan interface cannot be moved to another netns;
- the wpan interface is in the same netns than the 6lowpan interface;
- the 6lowpan interface is in init_net.

Contrary to common expectations for an "int" return, these functions
return only a positive value -- if used correctly they cannot even
return 0 because the message header will necessarily be in the skb.
This makes the very common pattern of
if (genlmsg_end(...) < 0) { ... }
be a whole bunch of dead code. Many places also simply do
return nlmsg_end(...);
and the caller is expected to deal with it.
This also commonly (at least for me) causes errors, because it is very
common to write
if (my_function(...))
/* error condition */
and if my_function() does "return nlmsg_end()" this is of course wrong.
Additionally, there's not a single place in the kernel that actually
needs the message length returned, and if anyone needs it later then
it'll be very easy to just use skb->len there.
Remove this, and make the functions void. This removes a bunch of dead
code as described above. The patch adds lines because I did
- return nlmsg_end(...);
+ nlmsg_end(...);
+ return 0;
I could have preserved all the function's return values by returning
skb->len, but instead I've audited all the places calling the affected
functions and found that none cared. A few places actually compared
the return value with <= 0 in dump functionality, but that could just
be changed to < 0 with no change in behaviour, so I opted for the more
efficient version.
One instance of the error I've made numerous times now is also present
in net/phonet/pn_netlink.c in the route_dumpit() function - it didn't
check for <0 or <=0 and thus broke out of the loop every single time.
I've preserved this since it will (I think) have caused the messages to
userspace to be formatted differently with just a single message for
every SKB returned to userspace. It's possible that this isn't needed
for the tools that actually use this, but I don't even know what they
are so couldn't test that changing this behaviour would be acceptable.

pull request: wireless-next 2014-12-08
Please pull this last batch of pending wireless updates for the 3.19 tree...
For the wireless bits, Johannes says:
"This time I have Felix's no-status rate control work, which will allow
drivers to work better with rate control even if they don't have perfect
status reporting. In addition to this, a small hwsim fix from Patrik,
one of the regulatory patches from Arik, and a number of cleanups and
fixes I did myself.
Of note is a patch where I disable CFG80211_WEXT so that compatibility
is no longer selectable - this is intended as a wake-up call for anyone
who's still using it, and is still easily worked around (it's a one-line
patch) before we fully remove the code as well in the future."
For the Bluetooth bits, Johan says:
"Here's one more bluetooth-next pull request for 3.19:
- Minor cleanups for ieee802154 & mac802154
- Fix for the kernel warning with !TASK_RUNNING reported by Kirill A.
Shutemov
- Support for another ath3k device
- Fix for tracking link key based security level
- Device tree bindings for btmrvl + a state update fix
- Fix for wrong ACL flags on LE links"
And...
"In addition to the previous one this contains two more cleanups to
mac802154 as well as support for some new HCI features from the
Bluetooth 4.2 specification.
From the original request:
'Here's what should be the last bluetooth-next pull request for 3.19.
It's rather large but the majority of it is the Low Energy Secure
Connections feature that's part of the Bluetooth 4.2 specification. The
specification went public only this week so we couldn't publish the
corresponding code before that. The code itself can nevertheless be
considered fairly mature as it's been in development for over 6 months
and gone through several interoperability test events.
Besides LE SC the pull request contains an important fix for command
complete events for mgmt sockets which also fixes some leaks of hci_conn
objects when powering off or unplugging Bluetooth adapters.
A smaller feature that's part of the pull request is service discovery
support. This is like normal device discovery except that devices not
matching specific UUIDs or strong enough RSSI are filtered out.
Other changes that the pull request contains are firmware dump support
to the btmrvl driver, firmware download support for Broadcom BCM20702A0
variants, as well as some coding style cleanups in 6lowpan &
ieee802154/mac802154 code.'"
For the NFC bits, Samuel says:
"With this one we get:
- NFC digital improvements for DEP support: Chaining, NACK and ATN
support added.
- NCI improvements: Support for p2p target, SE IO operand addition,
SE operands extensions to support proprietary implementations, and
a few fixes.
- NFC HCI improvements: OPEN_PIPE and NOTIFY_ALL_CLEARED support,
and SE IO operand addition.
- A bunch of minor improvements and fixes for STMicro st21nfcb and
st21nfca"
For the iwlwifi bits, Emmanuel says:
"Major works are CSA and TDLS. On top of that I have a new
firmware API for scan and a few rate control improvements.
Johannes find a few tricks to improve our CPU utilization
and adds support for a new spin of 7265 called 7265D.
Along with this a few random things that don't stand out."
And...
"I deprecate here -8.ucode since -9 has been published long ago.
Along with that I have a new activity, we have now better
a infrastructure for firmware debugging. This will allow to
have configurable probes insides the firmware.
Luca continues his work on NetDetect, this feature is now
complete. All the rest is minor fixes here and there."
For the Atheros bits, Kalle says:
"Only ath10k changes this time and no major changes. Most visible are:
o new debugfs interface for runtime firmware debugging (Yanbo)
o fix shared WEP (Sujith)
o don't rebuild whenever kernel version changes (Johannes)
o lots of refactoring to make it easier to add new hw support (Michal)
There's also smaller fixes and improvements with no point of listing
here."
In addition, there are a few last minute updates to ath5k,
ath9k, brcmfmac, brcmsmac, mwifiex, rt2x00, rtlwifi, and wil6210.
Also included is a pull of the wireless tree to pick-up the fixes
originally included in "pull request: wireless 2014-12-03"...

patches I did
* custom regulatory fixes from Arik
* minstrel VHT fix (and a small optimisation) from Felix

* random MAC address scanning for cfg80211/mac80211/hwsim (myself)
* CSA improvements (Luca)
* WoWLAN Net Detect (wake on network found) support (Luca)
* and lots of other smaller changes from many people"
For the Bluetooth bits, Johan says:
"Here's another set of patches for 3.19. Most of it is again fixes and
cleanups to ieee802154 related code from Alexander Aring. We've also got
better handling of hardware error events along with a proper API for HCI
drivers to notify the HCI core of such situations. There's also a minor
fix for mgmt events as well as a sparse warning fix. The code for
sending HCI commands synchronously also gets a fix where we might loose
the completion event in the case of very fast HW (particularly easily
reproducible with an emulated HCI device)."
And...
"Here's another bluetooth-next pull request for 3.19. We've got:
- Various fixes, cleanups and improvements to ieee802154/mac802154
- Support for a Broadcom BCM20702A1 variant
- Lots of lockdep fixes
- Fixed handling of LE CoC errors that should trigger SMP"
For the Atheros bits, Kalle says:
"One ath6kl patch and rest for ath10k, but nothing really major which
stands out. Most notable:
o fix resume (Bartosz)
o firmware restart is now faster and more reliable (Michal)
o it's now possible to test hardware restart functionality without
crashing the firmware using hw-restart parameter with
simulate_fw_crash debugfs file (Michal)"

pull request: wireless-next 2014-10-03
Please pull tihs batch of updates intended for the 3.18 stream!
For the iwlwifi bits, Emmanuel says:
"I have here a few things that depend on the latest mac80211's changes:
RRM, TPC, Quiet Period etc... Eyal keeps improving our rate control
and we have a new device ID. This last patch should probably have
gone to wireless.git, but at that stage, I preferred to send it to
-next and CC stable."
For (most of) the Atheros bits, Kalle says:
"The only new feature is testmode support from me. Ben added a new method
to crash the firmware with an assert for debug purposes. As usual, we
have lots of smaller fixes from Michal. Matteo fixed a Kconfig
dependency with debugfs. I fixed some warnings recently added to
checkpatch."
For the NFC bits, Samuel says:
"We've had major updates for TI and ST Microelectronics drivers, and a
few NCI related changes.
For TI's trf7970a driver:
- Target mode support for trf7970a
- Suspend/resume support for trf7970a
- DT properties additions to handle different quirks
- A bunch of fixes for smartphone IOP related issues
For ST Microelectronics' ST21NFCA and ST21NFCB drivers:
- ISO15693 support for st21nfcb
- checkpatch and sparse related warning fixes
- Code cleanups and a few minor fixes
Finally, Marvell added ISO15693 support to the NCI stack, together with a
couple of NCI fixes."
For the Bluetooth bits, Johan says:
"This 3.18 pull request replaces the one I did on Monday ("bluetooth-next
2014-09-22", which hasn't been pulled yet). The additions since the last
request are:
- SCO connection fix for devices not supporting eSCO
- Cleanups regarding the SCO establishment logic
- Remove unnecessary return value from logging functions
- Header compression fix for 6lowpan
- Cleanups to the ieee802154/mrf24j40 driver
Here's a copy from previous request that this one replaces:
'
Here are some more patches for 3.18. They include various fixes to the
btusb HCI driver, a fix for LE SMP, as well as adding Jukka to the
MAINTAINERS file for generic 6LoWPAN (as requested by Alexander Aring).
I've held on to this pull request a bit since we were waiting for a SCO
related fix to get sorted out first. However, since the merge window is
getting closer I decided not to wait for it. If we do get the fix sorted
out there'll probably be a second small pull request later this week.
'"
And,
"Unless 3.17 gets delayed this will probably be our last -next pull request for
3.18. We've got:
- New Marvell hardware supportr
- Multicast support for 6lowpan
- Several of 6lowpan fixes & cleanups
- Fix for a (false-positive) lockdep warning in L2CAP
- Minor btusb cleanup"
On top of all that comes the usual sort of updates to ath5k, ath9k,
ath10k, brcmfmac, mwifiex, and wil6210. This time around there are
also a number of rtlwifi updates to enable some new hardware and
to reconcile the in-kernel drivers with some newer releases of the
Realtek vendor drivers. Also of note is some device tree work for
the bcma bus.
Please let me know if there are problems!

The 6lowpan ipv6 header compression was causing problems for other interfaces
that expected a ipv6 header to still be in place, as we were replacing the
ipv6 header with a compressed version. This happened if you sent a packet to a
multicast address as the packet would be output on 802.15.4, ethernet, and also
be sent to the loopback interface. The skb data was shared between these
interfaces so all interfaces ended up with a compressed ipv6 header.
The solution is to ensure that before we do any header compression we are not
sharing the skb or skb data with any other interface. If we are then we must
take a copy of the skb and skb data before modifying the ipv6 header.
The only place we can copy the skb is inside the xmit function so we don't
leave dangling references to skb.
This patch moves all the header compression to inside the xmit function. Very
little code has been changed it has mostly been moved from lowpan_header_create
to lowpan_xmit. At the top of the xmit function we now check if the skb is
shared and if so copy it. In lowpan_header_create all we do now is store the
source and destination addresses for use later when we compress the header.

This patch makes init_net's high_thresh limit to be the maximum for all
namespaces, thus introducing a global memory limit threshold equal to the
sum of the individual high_thresh limits which are capped.
It also introduces some sane minimums for low_thresh as it shouldn't be
able to drop below 0 (or > high_thresh in the unsigned case), and
overall low_thresh should not ever be above high_thresh, so we make the
following relations for a namespace:
init_net:
high_thresh - max(not capped), min(init_net low_thresh)
low_thresh - max(init_net high_thresh), min (0)
all other namespaces:
high_thresh = max(init_net high_thresh), min(namespace's low_thresh)
low_thresh = max(namespace's high_thresh), min(0)
The major issue with having low_thresh > high_thresh is that we'll
schedule eviction but never evict anything and thus rely only on the
timers.

If we hit it, mark table for rebuild and schedule workqueue.
To prevent frequent rebuilds when we're completely overloaded,
don't rebuild more than once every 5 seconds.

This patch moves generic code which is used by bluetooth and ieee802154
6lowpan to a new net/6lowpan directory. This directory contains generic
6LoWPAN code which is shared between bluetooth and ieee802154 MAC-Layer.
This is the IPHC - "IPv6 Header Compression" format at the moment. Which
is described by RFC 6282 [0]. The BLTE 6LoWPAN draft describes that the
IPHC is the same format like IEEE 802.15.4, see [1].
Futuremore we can put more code into this directory which is shared
between BLTE and IEEE 802.15.4 6LoWPAN like RFC 6775 or the routing
protocol RPL RFC 6550.
To avoid naming conflicts I renamed 6lowpan-y to ieee802154_6lowpan-y

This patch fix a off by one error while fragmentation. If the frag_cap

This patch fix the 6LoWPAN fragmentation for the case if we have exactly
two fragments. The problem is that the (skb_unprocessed >= frag_cap)
condition is always false on the second fragment after sending the first
fragment. A fragmentation with only one fragment doesn't make any sense.
The solution is that we use a do while loop here, that ensures we sending
always a minimum of two fragments if we need a fragmentation.

For the added methods, the only major difference between all add/remove
implementation lies in how the specific object is parsed, and for dump
requests, how objects are written into netlink messages.
To save on boilerplate code, table dumps are routed through a helper
function that handles netlink dump state, leaving the actual dumping
code to care only about iterating over the table to be dumped and
filling netlink messages. For add/remove methods, the boilerplate
required to work is not quite as large, but still enough to also move
into a local helper.

Currently, 6lowpan creates one 802.15.4 MAC header for the original
packet the device was given by upper layers and reuses this header for
all fragments, if fragmentation is required. This also reuses frame
sequence numbers, which must not happen. 6lowpan also has issues with
fragmentation in the presence of security headers, since those may imply
the presence of trailing fields that are not accounted for by the
fragmentation code right now.
Fix both of these issues by properly allocating fragment skbs with
headromm and tailroom as specified by the underlying device, create one
header for each skb instead of reusing the original header, let the
underlying device do the rest.

The current mac_cb handling of ieee802154 is rather awkward and limited.
Decompose the single flags field into multiple fields with the meanings
of each subfield of the flags field to make future extensions (for
example, link-layer security) easier. Also don't set the frame sequence
number in upper layers, since that's a thing the MAC is supposed to set
on frame transmit - we set it on header creation, but assuming that
upper layers do not blindly duplicate our headers, this is fine.

When dealing with 802.15.4, one often has to know the maximum payload
size for a given packet. This depends on many factors, one of which is
whether or not a security header is present in the frame. These
definitions and functions provide an easy way for any upper layer to
calculate the maximum payload size for a packet. The first obvious user
for this is 6lowpan, which duplicates this calculation and gets it
partially wrong because it ignores security headers.

Use the operations on 802.15.4 header structs introduced in a previous
patch to create and parse all headers in the mac802154 stack. This patch
reduces code duplication between different parts of the mac802154 stack
that needed information from headers, and also fixes a few bugs that
seem to have gone unnoticed until now:
* 802.15.4 dgram sockets would return a slightly incorrect value for
the SIOCINQ ioctl
* mac802154 would not drop frames with the "security enabled" bit set,

This patch provides a set of structures to represent 802.15.4 MAC
headers, and a set of operations to push/pull/peek these structs from
skbs. We cannot simply pointer-cast the skb MAC header pointer to these
structs, because 802.15.4 headers are wildly variable - depending on the
first three bytes, virtually all other fields of the header may be
present or not, and be present with different lengths.

headers, which are currently not supported by the mac802154

Introduce new netlink attributes for SET_PHY_ATTRS:

* CSMA maximal backoff exponent

The CSMA attributes shall correspond to minBE, maxBE and maxCSMABackoffs of
802.15.4, respectively. The frame retransmission shall correspond to
maxFrameRetries of 802.15.4, unless given as -1: then the old behaviour
of the stack shall apply. For RF2xy, the old behaviour is to not do
channel sensing at all and simply send *right now*, which is not
intended behaviour for most applications and actually prohibited for

Since three of the four clear channel assesment modes make use of energy
detection, provide an API to set the energy detection threshold.
Driver support for this is available in at86rf230 for the RF212 chips.
Since for these chips the minimal energy detection threshold depends on
page and channel used, add a field to struct at86rf230_local that stores
the minimal threshold. Actual ED thresholds are configured as offsets
from this value.
For RF212, setting the ED threshold will not work before a channel/page
has been set due to the dependency of energy detection in the chip and

Register generic netlink multicast groups as an array with
the family and give them contiguous group IDs. Then instead
of passing the global group ID to the various functions that
send messages, pass the ID relative to the family - for most
families that's just 0 because the only have one group.
This avoids the list_head and ID in each group, adding a new
field for the mcast group ID offset to the family.
At the same time, this allows us to prevent abusing groups
again like the quota and dropmon code did, since we can now

This simplifies the code since there's no longer a need to
have error handling in the registration.
Unfortunately it means more extern function declarations are
needed, but the overall goal would seem to justify this.
While at it, also fix the registration error path - if the
family registration failed then it shouldn't be unregistered.

This patch drops the pre and postcount calculation from the
lowpan_uncompress_addr function.We use instead a switch/case
over address_mode value. The original implementation has several
bugs in this function and it was hard to decrypt how it works.
To make it maintainable and fix these bugs this patch basically
reimplements lowpan_uncompress_addr from scratch.
A list of bugs we found in the current implementation:
1) Properly support uncompression of short-address based IPv6 addresses
(instead of basically copying garbage)
2) Fix use and uncompression of long-addresses based IPv6 addresses
3) Add missing ff:fe00 in the case of SAM/DAM = 2 and M = 0

When a new 6lowpan fragment is received, a skbuff is allocated for
the reassembled packet. However when a 6lowpan packet compresses
link-local addresses based on link-layer addresses, the processing
function relies on the skb mac control block to find the related
link-layer address.
This patch copies the control block from the first fragment into
the newly allocated skb to keep a trace of the link-layer addresses
in case of a link-local compressed address.

Check for NULL before calling the following operations from "struct
ieee802154_mlme_ops": assoc_req, assoc_resp, disassoc_req, start_req,
and scan_req.
This fixes a current oops where those functions are called but not
implemented. It also updates the documentation to clarify that they
are now optional by design. If a call to an unimplemented function
is attempted, the kernel returns EOPNOTSUPP via netlink.
The following operations are still required: get_phy, get_pan_id,
get_short_addr, and get_dsn.
Note that the places where this patch changes the initialization
of "ret" should not affect the rest of the code since "ret" was
always set (again) before returning its value.

dev_queue_xmit() will return a positive value if the packet could not be
queued, often because the real network device (in our case the mac802154
wpan device) has its queue stopped. lowpan_xmit() should handle the
positive return code (for the debug statement) and return that value to
the higher layer so the higher layer will retry sending the packet.
