3f407976ac sparc32: mm: Change pgtable_t type to pte_t * instead of struct page *
Change the 'pgtable_t' type for sparc32 so that it represents the uncached
virtual address of the PTE table, rather than the underlying 'struct page'.

This allows us to free page table allocations smaller than a page.

8e958839e4 sparc32: mm: Restructure sparc32 MMU page-table layout
The "SRMMU" supports 4k pages using a fixed three-level walk with a
256-entry PGD and 64-entry PMD/PTE levels. In order to fill a page
with a 'pgtable_t', the SRMMU code allocates four native PTE tables
into a single PTE allocation and similarly for the PMD level, leading
to an array of 16 physical pointers in a 'pmd_t'

This breaks the generic code which assumes READ_ONCE(*pmd) will be
word sized.

In a manner similar to ef22d8abd8 ("m68k: mm: Restructure Motorola
MMU page-table layout"), this patch implements the native page-table
setup directly. This significantly increases the page-table memory
overhead, but will be addresses in a subsequent patch.

78e7c5af08 mm/special: create generic fallbacks for pte_special() and pte_mkspecial()
Currently there are many platforms that dont enable ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL
but required to define quite similar fallback stubs for special page
table entry helpers such as pte_special() and pte_mkspecial(), as they
get build in generic MM without a config check. This creates two
generic fallback stub definitions for these helpers, eliminating much
code duplication.

mips platform has a special case where pte_special() and pte_mkspecial()
visibility is wider than what ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL enablement requires.
This restricts those symbol visibility in order to avoid redefinitions
which is now exposed through this new generic stubs and subsequent build
failure. arm platform set_pte_at() definition needs to be moved into a
C file just to prevent a build failure.

c62da0c35d mm/vma: define a default value for VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGS
There are many platforms with exact same value for VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGS
This creates a default value for VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGS in line with the
existing VM_STACK_DEFAULT_FLAGS. While here, also define some more
macros with standard VMA access flag combinations that are used
frequently across many platforms. Apart from simplification, this
reduces code duplication as well.

251a0ffeae mm: bring sparc pte_index() semantics inline with other platforms
pte_index() on platforms other than sparc return a numerical index. On
sparc, it returns a pte_t*. This presents an issue for
vm_insert_pages(), which relies on pte_index() to find the offset for a
pte within a pmd, for batched inserts.

This patch:
1. Modifies pte_index() for sparc to return a numerical index, like
   other platforms,
2. Defines pte_entry() for sparc which returns a pte_t*
   (as pte_index() used to),
3. Converts existing sparc callers for pte_index() to use pte_entry().

255a69a94b sparc32: use per-device dma_ops
sparc32 is the last platform making dynamic decisions in
get_arch_dma_ops based on the bus passed in. Instead set the
iommu dma_ops at iommu probing and propagate them in
of_propagate_archdata, falling back to the NULL ops for the
direct mapping in the Leon or PCI case.

630f289b71 asm-generic: make more kernel-space headers mandatory
Change a header to mandatory-y if both of the following are met:

[1] At least one architecture (except um) specifies it as generic-y in
    arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild

[2] Every architecture (except um) either has its own implementation
(arch/*/include/asm/*.h) or specifies it as generic-y in
    arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild

This commit was generated by the following shell script.

----------------------------------->8-----------------------------------

arches=$(cd arch; ls -1 | sed -e '/Kconfig/d' -e '/um/d')

tmpfile=$(mktemp)

grep "^mandatory-y +=" include/asm-generic/Kbuild > $tmpfile

find arch -path 'arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild' |
	xargs sed -n 's/^generic-y += \(.*\)/\1/p' | sort -u |
while read header
do
	mandatory=yes

	for arch in $arches
	do
		if ! grep -q "generic-y += $header" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild &&
			! [ -f arch/$arch/include/asm/$header ]; then
			mandatory=no
			break
		fi
	done

	if [ "$mandatory" = yes ]; then
		echo "mandatory-y += $header" >> $tmpfile

		for arch in $arches
		do
			sed -i "/generic-y += $header/d" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild
		done
	fi

done

sed -i '/^mandatory-y +=/d' include/asm-generic/Kbuild

LANG=C sort $tmpfile >> include/asm-generic/Kbuild

----------------------------------->8-----------------------------------

One obvious benefit is the diff stat:

 25 files changed, 52 insertions(+), 557 deletions(-)

It is tedious to list generic-y for each arch that needs it.

So, mandatory-y works like a fallback default (by just wrapping
asm-generic one) when arch does not have a specific header
implementation.

See the following commits:

def3f7cefe
a1b39bae16

It is tedious to convert headers one by one, so I processed by a shell
script.

Prior to commit 70a6fcf328 ("[sparc] unify 32bit and 64bit string.h"),
__HAVE_ARCH_STRLEN was defined in both of string_32.h and string_64.h

It did not unify __HAVE_ARCH_STRLEN, but deleted it from string_32.h

This issue was reported by the kbuild test robot in the trial of

0ed1325967 mm/mmu_gather: invalidate TLB correctly on batch allocation failure and flush
Architectures for which we have hardware walkers of Linux page table
should flush TLB on mmu gather batch allocation failures and batch flush.
Some architectures like POWER supports multiple translation modes (hash
and radix) and in the case of POWER only radix translation mode needs the
above TLBI. This is because for hash translation mode kernel wants to
avoid this extra flush since there are no hardware walkers of linux page
table. With radix translation, the hardware also walks linux page table
and with that, kernel needs to make sure to TLB invalidate page walk cache
before page table pages are freed.

More details in commit d86564a2f0 ("mm/tlb, x86/mm: Support invalidating
TLB caches for RCU_TABLE_FREE")

The changes to sparc are to make sure we keep the old behavior since we
are now removing HAVE_RCU_TABLE_NO_INVALIDATE. The default value for
tlb_needs_table_invalidate is to always force an invalidate and sparc can
avoid the table invalidate. Hence we define tlb_needs_table_invalidate to
false for sparc architecture.

those of user space. For this it needs to know when it has reached a

For sparc 64 bit, pmd_large() and pud_large() are already provided, so add
macros to provide the p?d_leaf names required by the generic code.

 ioctl tree here:

 1c46a2cf2d Merge tag 'block-ioctl-cleanup-5.6' into 5.6/scsi-queue

Excluding Arnd's changes, this is mostly an update of the usual
 drivers: megaraid_sas, mpt3sas, qla2xxx, ufs, lpfc, hisi_sas. There
are a couple of core and base updates around error propagation and
atomicity in the attribute container base we use for the SCSI
transport classes. The rest is minor changes and updates.

Pull EFI updates from Ingo Molnar:
"The main changes in this cycle were:

   - Cleanup of the GOP [graphics output] handling code in the EFI stub

   - Complete refactoring of the mixed mode handling in the x86 EFI stub

   - Overhaul of the x86 EFI boot/runtime code

   - Increase robustness for mixed mode code

   - Add the ability to disable DMA at the root port level in the EFI
     stub

   - Get rid of RWX mappings in the EFI memory map and page tables,

202bf8d758 compat: provide compat_ptr() on all architectures
In order to avoid needless #ifdef CONFIG_COMPAT checks,
move the compat_ptr() definition to linux/compat.h
where it can be seen by any file regardless of the
architecture.

Only s390 needs a special definition, this can use the
self-#define trick we have elsewhere.

1f059dfdf5 mm/vmalloc: Add empty <asm/vmalloc.h> headers and use them from <linux/vmalloc.h>
In the x86 MM code we'd like to untangle various types of historic

the generic vmalloc code various vmalloc related defines that
customarily come via the <asm/page.h> low level arch header.

a1b39bae16 asm-generic: Make msi.h a mandatory include/asm header
msi.h is generic for all architectures except x86, which has its own
version. Enabling MSI by adding msi.h to every architecture's Kbuild is
just an additional step which doesn't need to be done.

Make msi.h mandatory in the asm-generic/Kbuild so we don't have to do it
for each architecture.

903f433f8f lib: untag user pointers in strn*_user
Patch series "arm64: untag user pointers passed to the kernel", v19.

=== Overview

arm64 has a feature called Top Byte Ignore, which allows to embed pointer
tags into the top byte of each pointer. Userspace programs (such as
HWASan, a memory debugging tool [1]) might use this feature and pass
tagged user pointers to the kernel through syscalls or other interfaces.

Right now the kernel is already able to handle user faults with tagged
pointers, due to these patches:

1. 81cddd65 ("arm64: traps: fix userspace cache maintenance emulation on a
             tagged pointer")
2. 7dcd9dd8 ("arm64: hw_breakpoint: fix watchpoint matching for tagged
	      pointers")
3. 276e9327 ("arm64: entry: improve data abort handling of tagged
	      pointers")

This patchset extends tagged pointer support to syscall arguments.

As per the proposed ABI change [3], tagged pointers are only allowed to be
passed to syscalls when they point to memory ranges obtained by anonymous
mmap() or sbrk() (see the patchset [3] for more details).

For non-memory syscalls this is done by untaging user pointers when the
kernel performs pointer checking to find out whether the pointer comes
from userspace (most notably in access_ok). The untagging is done only
when the pointer is being checked, the tag is preserved as the pointer
makes its way through the kernel and stays tagged when the kernel
dereferences the pointer when perfoming user memory accesses.

The mmap and mremap (only new_addr) syscalls do not currently accept
tagged addresses. Architectures may interpret the tag as a background
colour for the corresponding vma.

Other memory syscalls (mprotect, etc.) don't do user memory accesses but
rather deal with memory ranges, and untagged pointers are better suited to
describe memory ranges internally. Thus for memory syscalls we untag
pointers completely when they enter the kernel.

=== Other approaches

One of the alternative approaches to untagging that was considered is to
completely strip the pointer tag as the pointer enters the kernel with
some kind of a syscall wrapper, but that won't work with the countless
number of different ioctl calls. With this approach we would need a
custom wrapper for each ioctl variation, which doesn't seem practical.

An alternative approach to untagging pointers in memory syscalls prologues
is to inspead allow tagged pointers to be passed to find_vma() (and other
vma related functions) and untag them there. Unfortunately, a lot of
find_vma() callers then compare or subtract the returned vma start and end
fields against the pointer that was being searched. Thus this approach
would still require changing all find_vma() callers.

=== Testing

The following testing approaches has been taken to find potential issues
with user pointer untagging:

1. Static testing (with sparse [2] and separately with a custom static
analyzer based on Clang) to track casts of __user pointers to integer
types to find places where untagging needs to be done.

2. Static testing with grep to find parts of the kernel that call
find_vma() (and other similar functions) or directly compare against
   vm_start/vm_end fields of vma.

3. Static testing with grep to find parts of the kernel that compare
user pointers with TASK_SIZE or other similar consts and macros.

4. Dynamic testing: adding BUG_ON(has_tag(addr)) to find_vma() and running
a modified syzkaller version that passes tagged pointers to the kernel.

Based on the results of the testing the requried patches have been added
to the patchset.

=== Notes

This patchset is meant to be merged together with "arm64 relaxed ABI" [3].

This patchset is a prerequisite for ARM's memory tagging hardware feature
support [4].

This patchset has been merged into the Pixel 2 & 3 kernel trees and is
now being used to enable testing of Pixel phones with HWASan.

This patch (of 11)

This patch is a part of a series that extends kernel ABI to allow to pass
tagged user pointers (with the top byte set to something else other than
0x00) as syscall arguments.

strncpy_from_user and strnlen_user accept user addresses as arguments, and
do not go through the same path as copy_from_user and others, so here we
need to handle the case of tagged user addresses separately.

Untag user pointers passed to these functions.

Note, that this patch only temporarily untags the pointers to perform
validity checks, but then uses them as is to perform user memory accesses.

782de70c42 mm: consolidate pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init()
Both pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init() are used to initialize kmem
cache for page table allocations on several architectures that do not use
PAGE_SIZE tables for one or more levels of the page table hierarchy.

Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default
NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default
for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most
architectures.

Rename the definitions of pgd_cache_init() to pgtable_cache_init() and
drop empty stubs of pgtable_cache_init().

13224794cb mm: remove quicklist page table caches
Patch series "mm: remove quicklist page table caches".

A while ago Nicholas proposed to remove quicklist page table caches [1].

I've rebased his patch on the curren upstream and switched ia64 and sh to
use generic versions of PTE allocation.

[1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20190711030339.20892-1-npiggin@gmail.com

This patch (of 3):

Remove page table allocator "quicklists". These have been around for a
long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only
used on ia64 and sh architectures.

The numbers in the initial commit look interesting but probably don't
apply anymore. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git
history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator
behaviour for minor archs.

Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page
allocator if this is still so slow.

e192832869 Merge branch 'locking-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull locking updates from Ingo Molnar:
"The main changes in this cycle are:

   - rwsem scalability improvements, phase #2, by Waiman Long, which are
     rather impressive:

       "On a 2-socket 40-core 80-thread Skylake system with 40 reader
and writer locking threads, the min/mean/max locking operations
done in a 5-second testing window before the patchset were:

         40 readers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 1,807/1,808/1,810
         40 writers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 1,807/50,344/151,255

        After the patchset, they became:

         40 readers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 30,057/31,359/32,741
         40 writers, Iterations Min/Mean/Max = 94,466/95,845/97,098"

There's a lot of changes to the locking implementation that makes
it similar to qrwlock, including owner handoff for more fair
     locking.

Another microbenchmark shows how across the spectrum the
     improvements are:

"With a locking microbenchmark running on 5.1 based kernel, the
total locking rates (in kops/s) on a 2-socket Skylake system
with equal numbers of readers and writers (mixed) before and
        after this patchset were:

        # of Threads Before Patch After Patch
        ------------ ------------ -----------

The changes are extensive and the patch-set has been through
several iterations addressing various locking workloads. There
might be more regressions, but unless they are pathological I
believe we want to use this new implementation as the baseline
     going forward.

   - jump-label optimizations by Daniel Bristot de Oliveira: the primary
motivation was to remove IPI disturbance of isolated RT-workload
CPUs, which resulted in the implementation of batched jump-label
updates. Beyond the improvement of the real-time characteristics
kernel, in one test this patchset improved static key update
overhead from 57 msecs to just 1.4 msecs - which is a nice speedup
     as well.

   - atomic64_t cross-arch type cleanups by Mark Rutland: over the last
~10 years of atomic64_t existence the various types used by the
APIs only had to be self-consistent within each architecture -
which means they became wildly inconsistent across architectures.
Mark puts and end to this by reworking all the atomic64
implementations to use 's64' as the base type for atomic64_t, and
to ensure that this type is consistently used for parameters and
return values in the API, avoiding further problems in this area.

   - A large set of small improvements to lockdep by Yuyang Du: type
cleanups, output cleanups, function return type and othr cleanups
     all around the place.

   - A set of percpu ops cleanups and fixes by Peter Zijlstra.

   - Misc other changes - please see the Git log for more details"

04e8851af7 locking/atomic, sparc: Use s64 for atomic64
As a step towards making the atomic64 API use consistent types treewide,
let's have the sparc atomic64 implementation use s64 as the underlying
type for atomic64_t, rather than long, matching the generated headers.

As atomic64_read() depends on the generic defintion of atomic64_t, this
still returns long. This will be converted in a subsequent patch.

Otherwise, there should be no functional change as a result of this patch.

5470dea49f mm: use mm_zero_struct_page from SPARC on all 64b architectures
Patch series "Deferred page init improvements", v7.

This patchset is essentially a refactor of the page initialization logic
that is meant to provide for better code reuse while providing a
significant improvement in deferred page initialization performance.

In my testing on an x86_64 system with 384GB of RAM I have seen the
following. In the case of regular memory initialization the deferred init
time was decreased from 3.75s to 1.38s on average. This amounts to a 172%
improvement for the deferred memory initialization performance.

I have called out the improvement observed with each patch.

This patch (of 4):

Use the same approach that was already in use on Sparc on all the
architectures that support a 64b long.

This is mostly motivated by the fact that 7 to 10 store/move instructions
are likely always going to be faster than having to call into a function
that is not specialized for handling page init.

An added advantage to doing it this way is that the compiler can get away
with combining writes in the __init_single_page call. As a result the
memset call will be reduced to only about 4 write operations, or at least
that is what I am seeing with GCC 6.2 as the flags, LRU pointers, and
count/mapcount seem to be cancelling out at least 4 of the 8 assignments
on my system.

One change I had to make to the function was to reduce the minimum page
size to 56 to support some powerpc64 configurations.

This change should introduce no change on SPARC since it already had this
code. In the case of x86_64 I saw a reduction from 3.75s to 2.80s when
initializing 384GB of RAM per node. Pavel Tatashin tested on a system
with Broadcom's Stingray CPU and 48GB of RAM and found that
__init_single_page() takes 19.30ns / 64-byte struct page before this patch
and with this patch it takes 17.33ns / 64-byte struct page. Mike Rapoport
ran a similar test on a OpenPower (S812LC 8348-21C) with Power8 processor
and 128GB or RAM. His results per 64-byte struct page were 4.68ns before,
and 4.59ns after this patch.

171c2bcbcb Merge branch 'core-mm-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull unified TLB flushing from Ingo Molnar:
"This contains the generic mmu_gather feature from Peter Zijlstra,
which is an all-arch unification of TLB flushing APIs, via the
  following (broad) steps:

   - enhance the <asm-generic/tlb.h> APIs to cover more arch details

   - convert most TLB flushing arch implementations to the generic
     <asm-generic/tlb.h> APIs.

   - remove leftovers of per arch implementations

After this series every single architecture makes use of the unified
  TLB flushing APIs"
