We can avoid taking the BKL in snapshot_ioctl() if pm_mutex is used to prevent
the ioctls from being executed concurrently.
In addition, although it is only possible to open /dev/snapshot once, the task
which has done that may spawn a child that will inherit the open descriptor,
so in theory they can call snapshot_write(), snapshot_read() and
snapshot_release() concurrently. pm_mutex can also be used for mutual
exclusion in such cases.

The freezer currently attempts to distinguish kernel threads from
user space tasks by checking if their mm pointer is unset and it
does not send fake signals to kernel threads. However, there are
kernel threads, mostly related to networking, that behave like
user space tasks and may want to be sent a fake signal to be frozen.
Introduce the new process flag PF_FREEZER_NOSIG that will be set
by default for all kernel threads and make the freezer only send
fake signals to the tasks having PF_FREEZER_NOSIG unset. Provide
the set_freezable_with_signal() function to be called by the kernel
threads that want to be sent a fake signal for freezing.
This patch should not change the freezer's observable behavior.

ACPI PM: Add possibility to change suspend sequence
There are some systems out there that don't work correctly with
our current suspend/hibernation code ordering. Provide a workaround
for these systems allowing them to pass 'acpi_sleep=old_ordering' in
the kernel command line so that it will use the pre-ACPI 2.0 ("old")
suspend code ordering.
Unfortunately, this requires us to add a platform hook to the
resuming of devices for recovering the platform in case one of the
device drivers' .suspend() routines returns error code. Namely,
ACPI 1.0 specifies that _PTS should be called before suspending
devices, but _WAK still should be called before resuming them in
order to undo the changes made by _PTS. However, if there is an
error during suspending devices, they are automatically resumed
without returning control to the PM core, so the _WAK has to be
called from within device_resume() in that cases.
The patch also reorders and refactors the ACPI suspend/hibernation
code to avoid duplication as far as reasonably possible.

Introduce 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops' ('ext' meaning
'extended') representing suspend and hibernation operations for bus
types, device classes, device types and device drivers.
Modify the PM core to use 'struct pm_ops' and 'struct pm_ext_ops'
objects, if defined, instead of the ->suspend(), ->resume(),
->suspend_late(), and ->resume_early() callbacks (the old callbacks
will be considered as legacy and gradually phased out).
The main purpose of doing this is to separate suspend (aka S2RAM and
standby) callbacks from hibernation callbacks in such a way that the
new callbacks won't take arguments and the semantics of each of them
will be clearly specified. This has been requested for multiple
times by many people, including Linus himself, and the reason is that
within the current scheme if ->resume() is called, for example, it's
difficult to say why it's been called (ie. is it a resume from RAM or
from hibernation or a suspend/hibernation failure etc.?).
The second purpose is to make the suspend/hibernation callbacks more
flexible so that device drivers can handle more than they can within
the current scheme. For example, some drivers may need to prevent
new children of the device from being registered before their
->suspend() callbacks are executed or they may want to carry out some
operations requiring the availability of some other devices, not
directly bound via the parent-child relationship, in order to prepare
for the execution of ->suspend(), etc.
Ultimately, we'd like to stop using the freezing of tasks for suspend
and therefore the drivers' suspend/hibernation code will have to take
care of the handling of the user space during suspend/hibernation.
That, in turn, would be difficult within the current scheme, without
the new ->prepare() and ->complete() callbacks.

Prior to suspend, we allocate and switch to a new VT; after suspend, we switch
back to the original VT. This can be slow, and is completely unnecessary if
the framebuffer we're using can restore video properly.
This adds a hook that allows drivers to select whether or not to do this vt
switch, and changes the gxfb driver to call this hook. It also adds a module
param to gxfb to allow controlling of the vt switch (defaulting to no switch).
(Note: I'm not convinced that console_sem is the best way to protect this, but
we should probably have some form of locking..)

There is a problem in the hibernation code that triggers on some NUMA
systems on which pfn_valid() returns 'true' for some PFNs that don't
belong to any zone. Namely, there is a BUG_ON() in
memory_bm_find_bit() that triggers for PFNs not belonging to any
zone and passing the pfn_valid() test. On the affected systems it
triggers when we mark PFNs reported by the platform as not saveable,
because the PFNs in question belong to a region mapped directly using
iorepam() (i.e. the ACPI data area) and they pass the pfn_valid()
test.
Modify memory_bm_find_bit() so that it returns an error if given PFN
doesn't belong to any zone instead of crashing the kernel and ignore
the result returned by it in mark_nosave_pages(), while marking the
"nosave" memory regions.
This doesn't affect the hibernation functionality, as we won't touch
the PFNs in question anyway.

This changes the "freezer" code used by suspend/hibernate in its treatment
of tasks in TASK_STOPPED (job control stop) and TASK_TRACED (ptrace) states.
As I understand it, the intent of the "freezer" is to hold all tasks
from doing anything significant. For this purpose, TASK_STOPPED and
TASK_TRACED are "frozen enough". It's possible the tasks might resume
from ptrace calls (if the tracer were unfrozen) or from signals
(including ones that could come via timer interrupts, etc). But this
doesn't matter as long as they quickly block again while "freezing" is
in effect. Some minor adjustments to the signal.c code make sure that
try_to_freeze() very shortly follows all wakeups from both kinds of
stop. This lets the freezer code safely leave stopped tasks unmolested.
Changing this fixes the longstanding bug of seeing after resuming from
suspend/hibernate your shell report "[1] Stopped" and the like for all
your jobs stopped by ^Z et al, as if you had freshly fg'd and ^Z'd them.
It also removes from the freezer the arcane special case treatment for
ptrace'd tasks, which relied on intimate knowledge of ptrace internals.

During the last step of hibernation in the "platform" mode (with the
help of ACPI) we use the suspend code, including the devices'
->suspend() methods, to prepare the system for entering the ACPI S4
system sleep state.
But at least for some devices the operations performed by the
->suspend() callback in that case must be different from its operations
during regular suspend.
For this reason, introduce the new PM event type PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE and
pass it to the device drivers' ->suspend() methods during the last phase
of hibernation, so that they can distinguish this case and handle it as
appropriate. Modify the drivers that handle PM_EVENT_SUSPEND in a
special way and need to handle PM_EVENT_HIBERNATE in the same way.
These changes are necessary to fix a hibernation regression related
to the i915 driver (ref. http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/2/22/488).

On ACPI systems the target state set by acpi_pm_set_target() is
reset by acpi_pm_finish(), but that need not be called if the
suspend fails. All platforms that use the .set_target() global
suspend callback are affected by analogous issues.
For this reason, we need an additional global suspend callback that
will reset the target state regardless of whether or not the suspend
is successful. Also, it is reasonable to rename the .set_target()
callback, since it will be used for a different purpose on ACPI
systems (due to ACPI 1.0x code ordering requirements).

ACPI and APM used "pm_active" to guarantee that
they would not be simultaneously active.
But pm_active was recently moved under CONFIG_PM_LEGACY,
so that without CONFIG_PM_LEGACY, pm_active became a NOP --
allowing ACPI and APM to both be simultaneously enabled.
This caused unpredictable results, including boot hangs.
Further, the code under CONFIG_PM_LEGACY is scheduled
for removal.
So replace pm_active with pm_flags.

Lockdep reports a circular locking dependency in the hibernate code
because
- during system boot hibernate code (from an initcall) locks pm_mutex
and then a sysfs buffer mutex via name_to_dev_t
- during regular operation hibernate code locks pm_mutex under a
sysfs buffer mutex because it's called from sysfs methods.
The deadlock can never happen because during initcall invocation nothing
can write to sysfs yet. This removes the lockdep report by marking the
initcall locking as being in a different class.

Make hibernation_platform_enter() execute the enter-a-sleep-state sequence
instead of the mixed shutdown-with-entering-S4 thing.
Replace the shutting down of devices done by kernel_shutdown_prepare(), before
entering the ACPI S4 sleep state, with suspending them and the shutting down
of sysdevs with calling device_power_down(PMSG_SUSPEND) (just like before
entering S1 or S3, but the target state is now S4). Also, disable the
nonboot CPUs before entering the sleep state (S4), which generally always is a
good idea.
This is known to fix the "double disk spin down during hibernation" on some
machines, eg. HPC nx6325 (ref. http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/8/7/316 and the
following thread). Moreover, it has been reported to make
/sys/class/rtc/rtc0/wakealarm work correctly with hibernation for some users.
It also generally causes the hibernation state (ACPI S4) to be entered faster.

The following scenario leads to total confusion of the platform firmware on
some boxes (eg. HPC nx6325):
* Hibernate with ACPI enabled
* Resume passing "acpi=off" to the boot kernel
To prevent this from happening it's necessary to check if ACPI is enabled (and
enable it if that's not the case) _right_ _after_ control has been transfered
from the boot kernel to the image kernel, before device_power_up() is called
(ie. with interrupts disabled). Enabling ACPI after calling
device_power_up() turns out to be insufficient.
For this reason, introduce new hibernation callback ->leave() that will be
executed before device_power_up() by the restored image kernel. To make it
work, it also is necessary to move swsusp_suspend() from swsusp.c to disk.c
(it's name is changed to "create_image", which is more up to the point).

Currently, there's a CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND that allows one to stop
the serial console from being suspended when the rest of the machine goes
to sleep. This is incredibly useful for debugging power management-related
things; however, having it as a compile-time option has proved to be
incredibly inconvenient for us (OLPC). There are plenty of times that we
want serial console to not suspend, but for the most part we'd like serial
console to be suspended.
This drops CONFIG_DISABLE_CONSOLE_SUSPEND, and replaces it with a kernel
boot parameter (no_console_suspend). By default, the serial console will
be suspended along with the rest of the system; by passing
'no_console_suspend' to the kernel during boot, serial console will remain
alive during suspend.
For now, this is pretty serial console specific; further fixes could be
applied to make this work for things like netconsole.

The freezer should not send signals to kernel threads, since that may lead to
subtle problems. In particular, commit
b74d0deb96 has changed recalc_sigpending_tsk()
so that it doesn't clear TIF_SIGPENDING. For this reason, if the freezer
continues to send fake signals to kernel threads and the freezing of kernel
threads fails, some of them may be running with TIF_SIGPENDING set forever.
Accordingly, recalc_sigpending_tsk() shouldn't set the task's TIF_SIGPENDING

Kernel threads should not have TIF_FREEZE set when user space processes are
being frozen, since otherwise some of them might be frozen prematurely.
To prevent this from happening we can (1) make exit_mm() unset TIF_FREEZE
unconditionally just after clearing tsk->mm and (2) make try_to_freeze_tasks()
check if p->mm is different from zero and PF_BORROWED_MM is unset in p->flags
when user space processes are to be frozen.
Namely, when user space processes are being frozen, we only should set
TIF_FREEZE for tasks that have p->mm different from NULL and don't have
PF_BORROWED_MM set in p->flags. For this reason task_lock() must be used to
prevent try_to_freeze_tasks() from racing with use_mm()/unuse_mm(), in which
p->mm and p->flags.PF_BORROWED_MM are changed under task_lock(p). Also, we
need to prevent the following scenario from happening:
* daemonize() is called by a task spawned from a user space code path
* freezer checks if the task has p->mm set and the result is positive
* task enters exit_mm() and clears its TIF_FREEZE
* freezer sets TIF_FREEZE for the task
* task calls try_to_freeze() and goes to the refrigerator, which is wrong at
that point
This requires us to acquire task_lock(p) before p->flags.PF_BORROWED_MM and
p->mm are examined and release it after TIF_FREEZE is set for p (or it turns
out that TIF_FREEZE should not be set).

At least on some machines it is necessary to prepare the ACPI firmware for the
restoration of the system memory state from the hibernation image if the
"platform" mode of hibernation has been used. Namely, in that cases we need
to disable the GPEs before replacing the "boot" kernel with the "frozen"
kernel (cf. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7887). After the
restore they will be re-enabled by hibernation_ops->finish(), but if the
restore fails, they have to be re-enabled by the restore code explicitly.
For this purpose we can introduce two additional hibernation operations,
called pre_restore() and restore_cleanup() and call them from the restore code
path. Still, they should be called if the "platform" mode of hibernation has
been used, so we need to pass the information about the hibernation mode from
the "frozen" kernel to the "boot" kernel in the image header.
Apparently, we can't drop the disabling of GPEs before the restore because of
Bug #7887 . We also can't do it unconditionally, because the GPEs wouldn't
have been enabled after a successful restore if the suspend had been done in
the 'shutdown' or 'reboot' mode.
In principle we could (and probably should) unconditionally disable the GPEs
before each snapshot creation *and* before the restore, but then we'd have to
unconditionally enable them after the snapshot creation as well as after the
restore (or restore failure) Still, for this purpose we'd need to modify
acpi_enter_sleep_state_prep() and acpi_leave_sleep_state() and we'd have to
introduce some mechanism synchronizing the disablind/enabling of the GPEs with
the device drivers' .suspend()/.resume() routines and with
disable_/enable_nonboot_cpus(). However, this would have affected the
suspend (ie. s2ram) code as well as the hibernation, which I'd like to avoid
in this patch series.

In the face of the recent change of suspend code ordering (cf.

the code ordering in swsusp so that hibernation_ops->prepare() is executed
after device_suspend().
However, for this purpose it seems reasonable to eliminate the code
duplication between kernel/power/disk.c and kernel/power/user.c first. By
eliminating it we can reduce the size of user.c quite substantially and remove
the maintenance difficulty with making essentially the same changes in two
different places.
Moreover, we should also remove the calls to "platform" functions from the
restore code path, since it doesn't carry out any power transition of the
system, but we generally need to disable the GPEs before the restore if the
'platform' hibernation mode has been used. To do this, we can introduce two
new hibernation_ops to be used in the restore code.
This patch:
Make the code hibernation code in kernel/power/user.c be functionally
equivalent to the corresponding code in kernel/power/disk.c , as it should be.

Commit 52ade9b3b9 changed the suspend code
ordering to execute pm_ops->prepare() after the device model per-device
.suspend() calls in order to fix some ACPI-related issues. Unfortunately, it
broke the at91 platform which assumed that pm_ops->prepare() would be called
before suspending devices.
at91 used pm_ops->prepare() to get notified of the target system sleep state,
so that it could use this information while suspending devices. However, with
the current suspend code ordering pm_ops->prepare() is called too late for
this purpose. Thus, at91 needs an additional method in 'struct pm_ops' that
will be used for notifying the platform of the target system sleep state.
Moreover, in the future such a method will also be needed by ACPI.
This patch adds the .set_target() method to 'struct pm_ops' and makes the
suspend code call it, if implemented, before executing the device model
per-device .suspend() calls. It also modifies the at91 code to use

Steve Hawkes discovered a problem where recalc_sigpending_tsk was called in
do_sigaction but no signal_wake_up call was made, preventing later signals
from waking up blocked threads with TIF_SIGPENDING already set.
In fact, the few other calls to recalc_sigpending_tsk outside the signals
code are also subject to this problem in other race conditions.
This change makes recalc_sigpending_tsk private to the signals code. It
changes the outside calls, as well as do_sigaction, to use the new
recalc_sigpending_and_wake instead.

Other than refrigerator, no one else calls frozen_process(). So move it from
include/linux/freezer.h to kernel/power/process.c.

Kernel threads can become userland processes by calling kernel_execve().
In particular, this may happen right after the try_to_freeze_tasks()
called with FREEZER_USER_SPACE has returned, so try_to_freeze_tasks()
needs to take userspace processes into consideration even if it is
called with FREEZER_KERNEL_THREADS.

Currently try_to_freeze_tasks() has to wait until all of the vforked processes
exit and for this reason every user can make it fail. To fix this problem we
can introduce the additional process flag PF_FREEZER_SKIP to be used by tasks
that do not want to be counted as freezable by the freezer and want to have
TIF_FREEZE set nevertheless. Then, this flag can be set by tasks using
sys_vfork() before they call wait_for_completion(&vfork) and cleared after
they have woken up. After clearing it, the tasks should call try_to_freeze()
as soon as possible.

If the freezing of tasks fails and a task is preempted in refrigerator()
before calling frozen_process(), then thaw_tasks() may run before this task is
frozen. In that case the task will freeze and no one will thaw it.
To fix this race we can call freezing(current) in refrigerator() along with
frozen_process(current) under the task_lock() which also should be taken in
the error path of try_to_freeze_tasks() as well as in thaw_process().
Moreover, if thaw_process() additionally clears TIF_FREEZE for tasks that are
not frozen, we can be sure that all tasks are thawed and there are no pending
"freeze" requests after thaw_tasks() has run.

In commit e3c7db621b we fixed the resume
ordering, so that the ACPI low-level resume code was called before the
actual driver resume was called. However, that broke the nesting logic
of suspend and resume, and we continued to suspend the devices _after_
we the ACPI device suspend code was called.
That resulted in us saving PCI state for devices that had already been
changed by ACPI, and in some cases disabled entirely (causing the PCI
save_state to be all-ones). Which in turn caused the wrong state to be
written back on resume.
This moves the ACPI device suspend to after the device model per-device
suspend() calls. This fixes the bogus state save.

Almost all users of pm_ops only support mem sleep, don't check in .valid and
don't reject any others in .prepare so users can be confused if they check
/sys/power/state, especially when new states are added (these would then
result in s-t-r although they're supposed to be something different).
This patch implements a generic pm_valid_only_mem function that is then

This patch series cleans up some misconceptions about pm_ops. Some users of
the pm_ops structure attempt to use it to stop the user from entering suspend
to disk, this, however, is not possible since the user can always use
"shutdown" in /sys/power/disk and then the pm_ops are never invoked. Also,
platforms that don't support suspend to disk simply should not allow
configuring SOFTWARE_SUSPEND (read the help text on it, it only selects
suspend to disk and nothing else, all the other stuff depends on PM).
The pm_ops structure is actually intended to provide a way to enter
platform-defined sleep states (currently supported states are "standby" and
"mem" (suspend to ram)) and additionally (if SOFTWARE_SUSPEND is configured)
allows a platform to support a platform specific way to enter low-power mode
once everything has been saved to disk. This is currently only used by ACPI
(S4).
This patch:
The pm_ops.pm_disk_mode is used in totally bogus ways since nobody really
seems to understand what it actually does.
This patch clarifies the pm_disk_mode description.
It also removes all the arm and sh users that think they can veto suspend to
disk via pm_ops; not so since the user can always do echo shutdown >
/sys/power/disk, they need to find a better way involving Kconfig or such.
ACPI is the only user left with a non-zero pm_disk_mode.
The patch also sets the default mode to shutdown again, but when a new pm_ops
is registered its pm_disk_mode is selected as default, that way the default
stays for ACPI where it is apparently required.

This reverts commit 94985134b7 and
insteads removes the WARN_ON() that caused that commit in the first
place.
The problem is that we call disable_nonboot_cpus() in swsusp before
powering down the system in order to avoid triggering the WARN_ON()
in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:init_low_mapping() and this doesn't
work well on Thomas' system.
So instead, remove the WARN_ON() in arch/x86_64/kernel/acpi/sleep.c:
init_low_mapping(), which triggers every time during the suspend to disk
in the platform mode, as the potential problem it is related to doesn't
seem to occur in practice.
[ I think we might want to disallow the case of multiple users of that

It causes extra moon icons blinking on x60, and breaks at least two other
systems.
During resume, we do not know that "reboot"/"shutdown" method was used, so
we assume "plaform" and call BIOS, anyway...
This is 2.6.21 material, and should fix 2 or 3 regressions from 2.6.20.

When the console is in VT_AUTO+KD_GRAPHICS mode, switching to the
SUSPEND_CONSOLE fails, resulting in vt_waitactive() waiting indefinitely or
until the task is interrupted. This patch tests if a console switch can
occur in set_console() and returns early if a console switch is not
possible.

Make the userland interface of swsusp call pm_ops->finish() after
enable_nonboot_cpus() and before resume_device(), as indicated by the recent
discussion on Linux-PM (cf.
http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html).
This patch changes the SNAPSHOT_PMOPS ioctl so that its first function,
PMOPS_PREPARE, only sets a switch turning the platform suspend mode on, and
its last function, PMOPS_FINISH, only checks if the platform mode is enabled.
This should allow the older userland tools to work with new kernels without
any modifications.
The changes here only affect the userland interface of swsusp.

As indicated in a recent thread on Linux-PM, it's necessary to call
pm_ops->finish() before devce_resume(), but enable_nonboot_cpus() has to be
called before pm_ops->finish() (cf.
http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html). For
consistency, it seems reasonable to call disable_nonboot_cpus() after
device_suspend().
This way the suspend code will remain symmetrical with respect to the resume
code and it may allow us to speed up things in the future by suspending and
resuming devices and/or saving the suspend image in many threads.
The following series of patches reorders the suspend and resume code so that
nonboot CPUs are disabled after devices have been suspended and enabled before
the devices are resumed. It also causes pm_ops->finish() to be called after
enable_nonboot_cpus() wherever necessary.
This patch:
Change the ordering of code in kernel/power/main.c so that device_suspend()
is called before disable_nonboot_cpus() and pm_ops->finish() is called after
enable_nonboot_cpus() and before device_resume(), as indicated by recent
discussion on Linux-PM
(cf. http://lists.osdl.org/pipermail/linux-pm/2006-November/004164.html).

instead of a function.
The nr_free_pages now requires vmstat.h to be included. There is one
occurrence in power management where we need to add the include. Directly
refrer to global_page_state() there to clarify why the #include was added.

In the kernels later than 2.6.19 there is a regression that makes swsusp
fail if the resume device is not explicitly specified.
It can be fixed by adding an additional parameter to
mm/swapfile.c:swap_type_of() allowing us to pass the (struct block_device
*) corresponding to the first available swap back to the caller.
