eedeac3ce9 mtd: m25p80: Micron SPI uses Macronix-style 4-byte addressing
For SPI NOR flash that are larger than 128Mbit (16MiB), we need 4 bytes
of address space to reach the entire flash; however, the original SPI
flash protocol used only 3 bytes for the address. So far, the practice
for handling this has been either to use new command opcodes that are
defined to use 4 bytes for their address, or to use special
mode-switching command to configure all traditionally-3-byte-address
commands to take 4 bytes instead.

Macronix and Spansion developed two incompatible methods for
entering/exiting "4-byte address mode." Micron flash uses the Macronix
method (OPCODE_{EN4B,EX4B}), not the Spansion method.

This patch solves addressing issues on Micron n25q256a and provides the
ability to support other future Micron SPI flash >16MiB.

Quoting a Micron representative:

  "Majority of our NOR that needs 4-byte addressing (256Mb or 32MB and
   higher) enter and exit 4byte through B7h and E9h commands. The
   N25Q256A7xxx and N25Q512A7xxx parts do not support 4-byte addressing
   mode via B7h or E9h command."

They further clarified that those that don't support the enter/exit
opcodes (B7h/E9h) are manufactured specifically to come up by default in
4-byte mode. We don't need to treat those parts any diffently, as they
will discard the EN4B opcode as a no-op.

7a96541a8e mtd: simplify use of devm_ioremap_resource
Remove unneeded error handling on the result of a call to
platform_get_resource when the value is passed to devm_ioremap_resource.

Move the call to platform_get_resource adjacent to the call to
devm_ioremap_resource to make the connection between them more clear.

87c9511fba mtd: m25p80: utilize dedicated 4-byte addressing commands
Traditionally, the command set used by SPI flash only supported a 3-byte
address. However, large SPI flash (>= 32MiB, or 256Mib) require 4 bytes
to address the entire flash. Most manufacturers have supplied a mode
switch (via a "bank register writer", or a "enable 4-byte mode"
command), which tells the flash to expect 4 address cycles from now on,
instead of 3. This mode remains until power is cut, the reset line is
triggered (on packages where present), or a command is sent to reset the
flash or to reset the 3-byte addressing mode.

As an alternative, some flash manufacturers have developed a new command
set that accept a full 4-byte address. They can be used orthogonally to
any of the modes; that is, they can be used when the flash is in either
3-byte or 4-byte address mode.

Now, there are a number of reasons why the "stateful" 4-byte address
mode switch may not be acceptable. For instance, some SoC's perform a
dumb boot sequence in which they only send 3-byte read commands to the
flash. However, if an unexpected reset occurs, the flash chip cannot be
guaranteed to return to its 3-byte mode. Thus, the SoC controller and
flash will not understand each other. (One might consider hooking up the
aforementioned reset pin to the system reset line so that any system
reset will reset the flash to 3-byte mode, but some packages do not
provide this pin. And in some other packages, one must choose between
having a reset pin and having enough pins for 4-output QSPI support.
It is an error prone process choosing a flash that will support a
hardware reset pin!)

This patch provides support for the new stateless command set, so that
we can avoid the problems that come with a stateful addressing mode
change. The flash can be left in "3-byte mode" while still accessing the
entire flash.

Note that Spansion supports this command set on all its large flash
(e.g, S25FL512S), and Macronix has begun supporting this command set on
some new flash (e.g., MX25L25635F). For the moment, I don't know how to
differentiate the Macronix that don't support this command set (e.g.,
MX25L25635E) from those that do, so this patch only supports Spansion.

660685d9d1 mtd: merge mtdchar module with mtdcore
The MTD subsystem has historically tried to be as configurable as possible. The
side-effect of this is that its configuration menu is rather large, and we are
gradually shrinking it. For example, we recently merged partitions support with
the mtdcore.

This patch does the next step - it merges the mtdchar module to mtdcore. And in
this case this is not only about eliminating too fine-grained separation and
simplifying the configuration menu. This is also about eliminating seemingly
useless kernel module.

Indeed, mtdchar is a module that allows user-space making use of MTD devices
via /dev/mtd* character devices. If users do not enable it, they simply cannot
use MTD devices at all. They cannot read or write the flash contents. Is it a
sane and useful setup? I believe not. And everyone just enables mtdchar.

Having mtdchar separate is also a little bit harmful. People sometimes miss the
fact that they need to enable an additional configuration option to have
user-space MTD interfaces, and then they wonder why on earth the kernel does
not allow using the flash? They spend time asking around.

Thus, let's just get rid of this module and make it part of mtd core.

Note, mtdchar had additional configuration option to enable OTP interfaces,
which are present on some flashes. I removed that option as well - it saves a
really tiny amount space.

[dwmw2: Strictly speaking, you can mount file systems on MTD devices just
        fine without the mtdchar (or mtdblock) devices; you just can't do
        other manipulations directly on the underlying device. But still I
        agree that it makes sense to make this unconditional. And Yay! we
        get to kill off an instance of checking CONFIG_foo_MODULE, which is
        an abomination that should never happen.]

ad2457894c mtd: devices: elm: check for device's presence before configuration
In case the driver is not probed - due to config mismatches or errors
in the DTS files - dev_get_drvdata() returns NULL, leading to an Ooops
during boot.

Make elm_config() return an error in such cases to propagate the error
up to the user, so it can fall back to software mode.

This device was reported over a year ago on OpenWrt mailing list in the
thread [OpenWrt-Devel] RedBoot partition table with winbond m25q128vb
(unfortunately, I can't find message id). Macpaul seemed to have
problems with partition driver, but it seems the device was working OK.

e534ee4f9c mtd: m25p80: introduce SST_WRITE flag for SST byte programming
Not all SST devices implement the SST byte programming command.
Some devices (like SST25VF064C) implement only standard m25p80 page
write command.

Now SPI flash devices that need sst_write() are explicitly marked
with new SST_WRITE flag and the decision to use sst_write() is based
on this flag instead of manufacturer id.

2d13dc3bce mtd: bcm47xxsflash: register this as normal driver
When platform_driver_probe() is used and no device is registered for
this driver -ENODEV is returned and and error message is shown. Not all
BCM47xx SoC have a serial flash chip controller and chip and for them

972e1b7b45 mtd: m25p80: Flash protection support for STmicro chips
This patch adds generic support for flash protection on STmicro chips.
On chips with less than 3 protection bits, the unused bits are don't cares
and so can be written anyway. The lock function will only change the
protection bits if it would not unlock other areas. Similarly, the unlock
function will not lock currently unlocked areas. Tested on the m25p64.

031da73fca mtd: block2mtd: throttle writes by calling balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited.
If you create a block2mtd device that is larger than main memory,
and write to all of it, then lots of pages will be dirtied but
they will never be flushed out as nothing calls any variant of
balance_dirty_pages.

It would be nice to call set_page_dirty_balance(), but that isn't exported,
so just call balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() directly.

Micron N25Q128 has two types of flash:

 - One is for 1.8v supply voltage, prefixed with "n25q128a11" and the jedec
   code is 0x20bb18.

ca796f8590 mtd: diskonchip: don't warn about ARM architecture
Enabling the diskonchip drivers on most architectures results
in a pointless warning "#warning Unknown architecture for
DiskOnChip. No default probe locations defined". The driver
can in fact handle the default location already through the
CONFIG_MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS, which gets set on the platforms
that need it, and we get a run-time error if this is not
set correctly.

Quoting from the datasheet for S25FL064P, rev. 05, Nov 18 2011, § 9.17:

"A 64 kB[sic] sector erase (D8h) command issued on 4 kB or 8 kB erase
sectors will erase all sectors in the specified 64 kB region. However,
please note that a 4 kB sector erase (20h) or 8 kB sector erase (40h)
command will not work on a 64 kB sector."

Referring further to Table 8.1 and Table 8.2, it is clearly seen
that most of the sectors are 64KiB; therefore disable this 4KiB
erase support since it's valid only on first/last sectors.

Handle timouts in general and return value of
'wait_event_interruptible_timeout' in particular, to capture all
conditions.

'wait_event_interruptible_timeout' returns either of the following three
values :-
   * 0               - time out occurred.
   * negative
      * -ERESTARTSYS - return because of a signal
      * other        - for a real error
   * positive        - time remaining

Fix particularly 'ERESTARTSYS' condition which is not properly handled
by the smi driver at a couple of places leading to an erroneous
situation.

It was observed that sometimes smi returned errors while resume from

2e24e32e27 mtd: block2mtd: fix recursive call of mtd_writev
The 'mtd_writev' interface calls the function assigned
to the '_write' field of a given mtd device if that is
not NULL. The block2mtd driver sets the '_writev' field
to the 'mtd_writev' function itself and thus causes a
endless loop.

This is caused by 1dbebd3256
(mtd: harmonize mtd_writev usage).

Remove the assignment from the block2mtd driver to fix the
issue.

Corner case reads do not work, and return false data and
ECC. This case is typically seen in a ubifs usage, with a
read of type:
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_oob(from=14882415, mode=1,
 data=(c30eca40:12), oob=(  (null):0))

This results in the following reads:
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=  (null), len=111)
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=c30eca40, len=12)
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=  (null), len=389)
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=  (null), len=0)
 - docg3 docg3: doc_read_data_area(buf=  (null), len=16)

If we suppose that the pages content is :
 - bytes 0 .. 111   : 0x0a
 - bytes 112 .. 255 : 0x0f
Then the returned bytes will be :
 - 111 times 0x0a (correct)
 - 0x0a 2 times and 0x0f 10 times (incorrect, should be
 0x0a,0x0f)
 - 0x0f 389 times (correct)
 - nothing
 - correct OOB

The reason seams that the first 111 bytes read ends between
the 2 docg3 planes, and that the first following read (in
the 12 bytes sequence, read of 16 bit word) returns the byte
of the rightmost plane duplicated in high and lower byte of
the word.

Fix this behaviour by ensuring that if the previous read
ended up in-between the 2 planes, there will be a first 1
byte read to get back to the beginning of leftmost plane.

edbc4540e0 mtd: driver _read() returns max_bitflips; mtd_read() returns -EUCLEAN
The drivers' _read() method, absent an error, returns a non-negative integer
indicating the maximum number of bit errors that were corrected in any one
region comprising an ecc step.  MTD returns -EUCLEAN if this is >=
bitflip_threshold, 0 otherwise.  If bitflip_threshold is zero, the comparison is
not made since these devices lack ECC and always return zero in the non-error
case (thanks Brian)¹.  Note that this is a subtle change to the driver
interface.

This and the preceding patches in this set were tested with ubi on top of the
nandsim and docg4 devices, running the ubi test io_basic from mtd-utils.

As docg3 is intolerant against reentrancy, especially
because of its weird register access (ie. a register read is
performed by a first register write), each access to the
docg3 IO space must be locked.

Lock the IO space with a mutex, shared by all chips on the
same cascade, as they all share the same IO space.

After several tries with ubifs, it appears empirically that constructor
provided figures for erase/write timeouts are underestimated. A timeout
of 100ms seems to work with a 5 years worn chip, and no timeouts occur
anymore.

b2a2a84d35 mtd: phram: dot not crash when built-in and passing boot param
This patch is based on Ville Herva's similar patch to block2mtd.

Trying to pass a parameter through the kernel command line when built-in would
crash the kernel, as phram_setup() was called so early that kmalloc() was not
functional yet.

This patch only saves the parameter string at the early boot stage, and parses
it later when init_phram() is called. The same happens in both module and
built-in cases.

With this patch, I can boot with a statically-compiled phram, and mount a
ext2 root fs from physical RAM, without the need for a initrd.

This has been tested in built-in and module cases, with and without a
parameter string.

6a918bade9 mtd: flash drivers set ecc strength
Flash device drivers initialize 'ecc_strength' in struct mtd_info, which is the
maximum number of bit errors that can be corrected in one writesize region.

Drivers using the nand interface intitialize 'strength' in struct nand_ecc_ctrl,
which is the maximum number of bit errors that can be corrected in one ecc step.
Nand infrastructure code translates this to 'ecc_strength'.

Also for nand drivers, the nand infrastructure code sets ecc.strength for ecc
modes NAND_ECC_SOFT, NAND_ECC_SOFT_BCH, and NAND_ECC_NONE.  It is set in the
driver for all other modes.

The read function was so far requiring the reads to be aligned on page
boundaries, and be page length multiples in size. Relieve these
constraints to ease the userspace ubifs programs runs, which read ubifs
headers of 64 bytes.

0dd5235f51 mtd: harmonize mtd_point interface implementation
Some MTD drivers return -EINVAL if the 'phys' parameter is not NULL, trying to
convey that they cannot return the physical address. However, this is not very
logical because they still can return the virtual address ('virt'). But some
drivers (lpddr) just ignore the 'phys' parameter instead, which is a more
logical thing to do.

Let's harmonize this and:

1. Always initialize 'virt' and 'phys' to 'NULL' in 'mtd_point()'.
2. Do not return an error if the physical address cannot be found.

So as a result, all drivers will set 'phys' to 'NULL' if it is not supported.
None of the 'mtd_point()' users use 'phys' anyway, so this should not break
anything. I guess we could also just delete this parameter later.

5e4e6e3fdf mtd: return error code from mtd_unpoint
The 'mtd_unpoint()' API function should be able to return an error code because
it may fail if you specify incorrect offset. This patch changes this MTD API
function and amends all the drivers correspondingly.

Also return '-EOPNOTSUPP' from 'mtd_unpoint()' when the '->unpoint()' method is
undefined. We do not really need this currently, but this just makes
sense to be consistent with 'mtd_point()'.

3c3c10bba1 mtd: add leading underscore to all mtd functions
This patch renames all MTD functions by adding a "_" prefix:

mtd->erase -> mtd->_erase
mtd->read_oob -> mtd->_read_oob
...

The reason is that we are re-working the MTD API and from now on it is
an error to use MTD function pointers directly - we have a corresponding
API call for every pointer. By adding a leading "_" we achieve the following:

1. Make sure we convert every direct pointer users
2. A leading "_" suggests that this interface is internal and it becomes
   less likely that people will use them directly
3. Make sure all the out-of-tree modules stop compiling and the owners
   spot the big API change and amend them.

f18dbbb1bf mtd: ST SPEAr: Add SMI driver for serial NOR flash
SPEAr platforms (spear3xx/spear6xx/spear13xx) provide SMI (Serial Memory
Interface) controller to access serial NOR flash. SMI provides a simple
interface for SPI/serial NOR flashes and has certain inbuilt commands
and features to support these flashes easily. It also makes it possible
to map an address range in order to directly access (read/write) the SNOR
over address bus. This patch intends to provide serial nor driver support
for spear platforms which are accessed through SMI.

1dbebd3256 mtd: harmonize mtd_writev usage
This patch makes the 'mtd_writev()' function more usable and logical. We first
teach it to fall-back to the 'default_mtd_writev()' function if the MTD driver
does not define its own '->writev()' method. Then we make block2mtd and JFFS2
just 'mtd_writev()' instead of 'default_mtd_writev()' function. This means we
can now stop exporting 'default_mtd_writev()' and instead, export
'mtd_writev()'. This is much cleaner and more logical, as well as allows us to
get read of another direct 'mtd->writev' access in JFFS2.

As the MTD api has no use for the number of erase cycles
each block has endured, remove the function which calculated
that value.

If one day MTD api finds it usefull for wear levelling
algorithms to have this information, the function should be

If doc_probe_device() returned an ERR_PTR, then we accidentally saved
that to docg3_floors[floor] = mtd; which gets derefenced in the error
handling when we call doc_release_device().

I've reworked the error handling to take care of that and hopefully
make it a little simpler.

5d3667eee4 mtd: Remove redundant spi driver bus initialization
In ancient times it was necessary to manually initialize the bus field of an
spi_driver to spi_bus_type. These days this is done in spi_driver_register(),
so we can drop the manual assignment.

c3de8a8a5a mtd: docg3: add fast mode
Docg3 chips can work in 3 modes : normal MLC mode, fast
mode and reliable mode. Normally, as docg3 is a MLC chip, it
should be configured to work in normal mode.

In both normal mode, each page is distinct. This
means that writing to page 12 of blocks 14,15 writes only to
that page, and reading from page 12 of blocks 14,15 reads
only from that page.

In reliable and fast modes, pages are coupled by pairs, and
are clones one of each other. This means that the available
capacity of the chip is halved. Pages are coupled in each
block, and page of index 2*n contains the same data as page
2*n+1 of the same block.

In fast mode, the reads occur a bit faster, but are a bit
less reliable that in normal mode.

When reading from page 2*n, the chip reads bytes from both
page 2*n and page 2*n+1, makes a logical and for each byte,
and returns the result. As programming a page means
"clearing bits", even if a bit was not cleared on one page
because the flash is worn out, the other page has the bit
cleared, and the result of the "AND" gives a correct result.

When writing to page 2*n, the chip writes data to both page
2*n and page 2*n+1.

Credit for discovering the BCH algorith parameters, and bit
reversing algorithm is to be give to Mike Dunn and Ivan
Djelic.

The BCH correction code relied upon the BCH library, where
all data and ECC is bit-reversed. The BCH library works
correctly when each input byte is bit-reversed, and
accordingly ECC output is also bit-reversed.

32a50b3a45 mtd: docg3: fix reading oob+data without correction
Fix the docg3 reads to be able to cope with all possible
data buffer / oob buffer / file mode combinations from
docg3_read_oob().
This especially ensures that raw reads do not use ECC
corrections, and AUTOOOB and PLACEOOB do use ECC
correction.

The approach is to empty docg3_read() and make it a wrapper
to docg3_read_oob(). As docg3_read_oob() handles all the
funny cases (no data buffer but oob buffer, data buffer but
no oob buffer, ...), docg3_read() is just a special use of
docg3_read_oob().

6be55f79a2 mtd: clean up usage of MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS
Depending on whether MTD_DOCPROBE_ADVANCED is set or not,
MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS will default to either 0x0000 or 0. That should
lead to (basically) identical code in docprobe.c. The current two
defaults should be merged.

And, while we're at it, if MTD_DOCPROBE is set MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS will
always be set. (MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS depends on MTD_DOCPROBE and it has
a default value.) So the check whether CONFIG_MTD_DOCPROBE_ADDRESS is
defined is unnecessary and should be dropped.

61cc8276fa mtd: sst25l: fix section markings
The previous section mismatch fix for this driver wasn't entirely correct.
The sst25l_flash_info array is now used in the devinit probe func, but is
marked as initdata, so building results in the warning:

WARNING: drivers/mtd/devices/sst25l.o(.devinit.text): Section mismatch
	in reference from the function sst25l_probe()
	to the variable .init.data:sst25l_flash_info

Further, the remove func should be devexit rather than exit to match the
probe func.

3d2d2b657f mtd: m25p80: Add Spansion S25FL512S, S70FL01GS
S25FL512S = 64MiB single die, same family as S25FL256S
S70FL01GS = 2x S25FL512S dies in one package (separate chip selects)

These devices are not sampling yet, but they are expected to be very
similar to S25FL256S, which has been tested.

baa9ae3cfd mtd: m25p80: Add Spansion S25FL256S
These are 32MiB parts which use a slightly different 4-byte enable
sequence from Macronix.

Default to the Spansion 4-byte scheme in set_4byte(), as it is more
likely to be copied by other vendors.

Building the kernel with 'make CONFIG_DEBUG_SECTION_MISMATCH=y´

resulted in:

The variable sst25l_driver references
the function __init sst25l_probe()
If the reference is valid then annotate the
variable with __init* or __refdata (see linux/init.h) or name the variable:

Fix the section mismatch.
