These small changes should allow GEM to be used with non shmem objects as
well as shmem objects. In the GMA500 case it allows the base framebuffer to
appear as a GEM object and thus acquire a handle and work with KMS.
For i915 it ought to be trivial to get back the wasted memory but putting the
system fb back into stolen RAM and in general I can imagine it allowing the
use of GEM and thus KMS with all the older cards that have their framebuffer
firmly placed in video RAM.

Because of a typo, calling ioctl with DRM_IOCTL_I915_OVERLAY_PUT_IMAGE
is broken if the macro is used directly. When using libdrm the bug is
not hit, since libdrm handles the ioctl encoding internally.
The typo also leads to the .cmd and .cmd_drv fields of the drm_ioctl
structure for DRM_I915_OVERLAY_PUT_IMAGE having inconsistent content.

Some RS690 chipsets seem to end up with floating connectors, either
a DVI connector isn't actually populated, or an add-in HDMI card
is available but not installed. In this case we seem to get a NULL byte
response for each byte of the i2c transaction, so we detect this
case and if we see it we don't do anymore DDC transactions on this
connector.
I've tested this on my RS690 without the HDMI card installed and

The old api has a two-step process: First search for a suitable
free hole, then allocate from that specific hole. No user used
this to do anything clever. So drop it for the embeddable variant
of the drm_mm api (the old one retains this ability, for the time
being).
With struct drm_mm_node embedded, we cannot track allocations
anymore by checking for a NULL pointer. So keep track of this
and add a small helper drm_mm_node_allocated.
Also add a function to move allocations between different struct
drm_mm_node.
v2: Implement suggestions by Chris Wilson.
Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch>
Signed-off-by: Dave Airlie <airlied@redhat.com>
The idea is to track free holes implicitly by marking the allocation
immediatly preceeding a hole.
To avoid an ugly corner case add a dummy head_node to struct drm_mm
to track the hole that spans to complete allocation area when the
memory manager is empty.
To guarantee that there's always a preceeding/following node (that might
be marked as hole_follows == 1), move the mm->node_list list_head to the
head_node.
The main allocator and fair-lru scan code actually becomes simpler.
Only the debug code slightly suffers because free areas are no longer
explicit.
Also add drm_mm_for_each_node (which will be much more useful when
struct drm_mm_node is embeddable).

This is just an idea that might or might not be a good idea,
it basically adds two ioctls to create a dumb and map a dumb buffer
suitable for scanout. The handle can be passed to the KMS ioctls to create
a framebuffer.
It looks to me like it would be useful in the following cases:
a) in development drivers - we can always provide a shadowfb fallback.
b) libkms users - we can clean up libkms a lot and avoid linking
to libdrm_*.
c) plymouth via libkms is a lot easier.
Userspace bits would be just calls + mmaps. We could probably
mark these handles somehow as not being suitable for acceleartion
so as top stop people who are dumber than dumb.

the orderliness of his characters.
The oddness begins when one realised that Hugh was not using vblanks at
all on his system (fvwm and some xterms). Instead, all he had to go on
were warning of a pipe underrun, curiously enough at around 60Hz. He
poked and found that in addition to the underrun warning, the hardware
was flagging the start of a new frame, a vblank, which in turn was
kicking off the pending vblank processing code.
There is little we can do for the underruns on Hugh's machine, a

This patch attempts to fix up shortcomings with the current calling
sequences.
1) There's a fastpath where no locking occurs and only io_mem_reserved is
called to obtain needed info for mapping. The fastpath is set per
memory type manager.
2) If the fastpath is disabled, io_mem_reserve and io_mem_free will be exactly
balanced and not called recursively for the same struct ttm_mem_reg.
3) Optionally the driver can choose to enable a per memory type manager LRU
eviction mechanism that, when io_mem_reserve returns -EAGAIN will attempt
to kill user-space mappings of memory in that manager to free up needed
resources

The bo lock used only to protect the bo sync object members, and since it
is a per bo lock, fencing a buffer list will see a lot of locks and unlocks.
Replace it with a per-device lock that protects the sync object members on
*all* bos. Reading and setting these members will always be very quick, so
the risc of heavy lock contention is microscopic. Note that waiting for
sync objects will always take place outside of this lock.
The bo device fence lock will eventually be replaced with a seqlock /
rcu mechanism so we can determine that a bo is idle under a
rcu / read seqlock.
However this change will allow us to batch fencing and unreserving of
buffers with a minimal amount of locking.

The DRI2 swap & sync implementation needs precise
vblank counts and precise timestamps corresponding
to those vblank counts. For conformance to the OpenML
OML_sync_control extension specification the DRM
timestamp associated with a vblank count should
correspond to the start of video scanout of the first
scanline of the video frame following the vblank
interval for that vblank count.
Therefore we need to carry around precise timestamps
for vblanks. Currently the DRM and KMS drivers generate
timestamps ad-hoc via do_gettimeofday() in some
places. The resulting timestamps are sometimes not
very precise due to interrupt handling delays, they
don't conform to OML_sync_control and some are wrong,
as they aren't taken synchronized to the vblank.
This patch implements support inside the drm core
for precise and robust timestamping. It consists
of the following interrelated pieces.
1. Vblank timestamp caching:
A per-crtc ringbuffer stores the most recent vblank
timestamps corresponding to vblank counts.
The ringbuffer can be read out lock-free via the
accessor function:
struct timeval timestamp;
vblankcount = drm_vblank_count_and_time(dev, crtcid, ×tamp).
The function returns the current vblank count and
the corresponding timestamp for start of video
scanout following the vblank interval. It can be
used anywhere between enclosing drm_vblank_get(dev, crtcid)
and drm_vblank_put(dev,crtcid) statements. It is used
inside the drmWaitVblank ioctl and in the vblank event
queueing and handling. It should be used by kms drivers for
timestamping of bufferswap completion.
The timestamp ringbuffer is reinitialized each time
vblank irq's get reenabled in drm_vblank_get()/
drm_update_vblank_count(). It is invalidated when
vblank irq's get disabled.
The ringbuffer is updated inside drm_handle_vblank()
at each vblank irq.
2. Calculation of precise vblank timestamps:
drm_get_last_vbltimestamp() is used to compute the
timestamp for the end of the most recent vblank (if
inside active scanout), or the expected end of the
current vblank interval (if called inside a vblank
interval). The function calls into a new optional kms
driver entry point dev->driver->get_vblank_timestamp()
which is supposed to provide the precise timestamp.
If a kms driver doesn't implement the entry point or
if the call fails, a simple do_gettimeofday() timestamp
is returned as crude approximation of the true vblank time.
A new drm module parameter drm.timestamp_precision_usec
allows to disable high precision timestamps (if set to
zero) or to specify the maximum acceptable error in
the timestamps in microseconds.
Kms drivers could implement their get_vblank_timestamp()
function in a gpu specific way, as long as returned
timestamps conform to OML_sync_control, e.g., by use
of gpu specific hardware timestamps.
Optionally, kms drivers can simply wrap and use the new
utility function drm_calc_vbltimestamp_from_scanoutpos().
This function calls a new optional kms driver function
dev->driver->get_scanout_position() which returns the
current horizontal and vertical video scanout position
of the crtc. The scanout position together with the
drm_display_timing of the current video mode is used
to calculate elapsed time relative to start of active scanout
for the current video frame. This elapsed time is subtracted
from the current do_gettimeofday() time to get the timestamp
corresponding to start of video scanout. Currently
non-interlaced, non-doublescan video modes, with or
without panel scaling are handled correctly. Interlaced/
doublescan modes are tbd in a future patch.
3. Filtering of redundant vblank irq's and removal of
some race-conditions in the vblank irq enable/disable path:
Some gpu's (e.g., Radeon R500/R600) send spurious vblank
irq's outside the vblank if vblank irq's get reenabled.
These get detected by use of the vblank timestamps and
filtered out to avoid miscounting of vblanks.
Some race-conditions between the vblank irq enable/disable
functions, the vblank irq handler and the gpu itself (updating
its hardware vblank counter in the "wrong" moment) are
fixed inside vblank_disable_and_save() and
drm_update_vblank_count() by use of the vblank timestamps and
a new spinlock dev->vblank_time_lock.
The time until vblank irq disable is now configurable via
a new drm module parameter drm.vblankoffdelay to allow
experimentation with timeouts that are much shorter than
the current 5 seconds and should allow longer vblank off
periods for better power savings.
Followup patches will use these new functions to
implement precise timestamping for the intel and radeon
kms drivers.

The patch also adds a utility function that can be used to prematurely
release GPU memory space usage of an object waiting to be destroyed.
For example during eviction or swapout.
The above mentioned commit didn't queue the buffer on the delayed destroy

With the current screwed but its ABI, ioctls for the drm, Linus pointed out that we could allow userspace to specify the allocation size, but we pass it to the driver which then uses it blindly to store a struct. Now if userspace specifies the allocation size as smaller than the driver needs, the driver can possibly overwrite memory.
This patch restructures the driver ioctls so we store the structure size we are expecting, and make sure we allocate at least that size. The copy from/to userspace are still restricted to the size the user specifies, this allows ioctl structs to grow on both sides of the equation.
Up until now we didn't really use the DRM_IOCTL defines in the kernel, so this cleans them up and adds them for nouveau.

This fixes support for PCI domains in what should hopefully be a backward
compatible way along with a change to libdrm.
When the interface version is set to 1.4, we assume userspace understands
domains and the world is at peace. We thus pass proper domain numbers
instead of 0 to userspace.
The newer libdrm will then try 1.4 first, and fallback to 1.1, along with
ignoring domains in the later case (well, except on alpha of course)

This restricts the use of the big kernel lock to the i830 and i810
device drivers. The three remaining users in common code (open, ioctl
and release) get converted to a new mutex, the drm_global_mutex,
making the locking stricter than the big kernel lock.
This may have a performance impact, but only in those cases that
currently don't use DRM_UNLOCKED flag in the ioctl list and would
benefit from that anyway.
The reason why i810 and i830 cannot use drm_global_mutex in their
mmap functions is a lock-order inversion problem between the current
use of the BKL and mmap_sem in these drivers. Since the BKL has
release-on-sleep semantics, it's harmless but it would cause trouble
if we replace the BKL with a mutex.
Instead, these drivers get their own ioctl wrappers that take the
BKL around every ioctl call and then set their own handlers as
DRM_UNLOCKED.

Intel Core i3/5 platforms with integrated graphics support both CPU and
GPU turbo mode. CPU turbo mode is opportunistic: the CPU will use any
available power to increase core frequencies if thermal headroom is
available. The GPU side is more manual however; the graphics driver
must monitor GPU power and temperature and coordinate with a core
thermal driver to take advantage of available thermal and power headroom
in the package.
The intelligent power sharing (IPS) driver is intended to coordinate
this activity by monitoring MCP (multi-chip package) temperature and
power, allowing the CPU and/or GPU to increase their power consumption,
and thus performance, when possible. The goal is to maximize
performance within a given platform's TDP (thermal design point).

These helper functions can be used to efficiently scan lru list
for eviction. Eviction becomes a three stage process:
1. Scanning through the lru list until a suitable hole has been found.
2. Scan backwards to restore drm_mm consistency and find out which
objects fall into the hole.
3. Evict the objects that fall into the hole.
These helper functions don't allocate any memory (at the price of
not allowing any other concurrent operations). Hence this can also be
used for ttm (which does lru scanning under a spinlock).
Evicting objects in this fashion should be more fair than the current
approach by i915 (scan the lru for a object large enough to contain
the new object). It's also more efficient than the current approach used
by ttm (uncoditionally evict objects from the lru until there's enough
free space).

a) slow work is always used now for any fbcon hotplug, as its not
a fast task and is more suited to being ran under slow work.
b) attempt to not do any fbdev changes when X is running as we'll

once X hands control to fbdev.

When we are running in a headless environment we have no idea what
output the user might plug in later, we only have hotplug detect
from the digital outputs. So if we detect no connected outputs at
initialisation, start a slow work operation to poll every 5 seconds
for an output.
this is only hooked up for radeon so far, on hw where we have full
hotplug detection there is no need for this.

The fbdev layer in the kms code should act like a consumer of the kms services and avoid having relying on information being store in the kms core structures in order for it to work.
This patch
a) removes the info pointer/psuedo palette from the core drm_framebuffer structure and moves it to the fbdev helper layer, it also removes the core drm keeping a list of kernel kms fbdevs.
b) migrated all the fb helper functions out of the crtc helper file into the fb helper file.

d) makes the surface sizes into a structure for ease of passing

On AGP system we might allocate/free routinely uncached or wc memory,
changing page from cached (wb) to uc or wc is very expensive and involves
a lot of flushing. To improve performance this allocator use a pool
of uc,wc pages.
Pools are protected with spinlocks to allow multiple threads to allocate pages
simultanously. Expensive operations are done outside of spinlock to maximize
concurrency.
Pools are linked lists of pages that were recently freed. mm shrink callback
allows kernel to claim back pages when they are required for something else.
Fixes:
* set_pages_array_wb handles highmem pages so we don't have to remove them
from pool.
* Add count parameter to ttm_put_pages to avoid looping in free code.
* Change looping from _safe to normal in pool fill error path.
* Initialize sum variable and make the loop prettier in get_num_unused_pages.
* Moved pages_freed reseting inside the loop in ttm_page_pool_free.
* Add warning comment about spinlock context in ttm_page_pool_free.

Before CVT-R, some monitors would advertise support for an alternative
GTF formula with lower blanking intervals. Correctly identify such
monitors, and use the alternative formula when generating modes for
them.
Note that we only do this for "standard" timing descriptors (tuples of
hsize in characters / aspect ratio / vertical refresh). Range-based
mode lists still only refer to the primary GTF curve. It would be
possible to do better for the latter case, but monitors are required to
support the primary curve over the entire advertised range, so all it
would win you is a lower pixel clock and therefore possibly better image
quality on analog links.

percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being
included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which
in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files
universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies.
percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for
this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those
headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion
needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is
used as the basis of conversion.
http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py
The script does the followings.
* Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that
only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used,
gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h.
* When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include
blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms
to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains
core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered -
alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there
doesn't seem to be any matching order.
* If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly
because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out
an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the
file.
The conversion was done in the following steps.
1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly
over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h
and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400
files.
2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion,
some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or
embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added
inclusions to around 150 files.
3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits
from #2 to make sure no file was left behind.
4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed.
e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab
APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually.
5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically
editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h
files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h
inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually
wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each
slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as
necessary.
6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h.
7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures
were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my
distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few
more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things
build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq).
* x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config.
* powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig
* sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig
* ia64 SMP allmodconfig
* s390 SMP allmodconfig
* alpha SMP allmodconfig
* um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig
8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as
a separate patch and serve as bisection point.
Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step
6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch.
If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch
headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of
the specific arch.

This commit breaks the userspace interface, and requires a new libdrm for
nouveau to operate again.
The multiple GEM_PUSHBUF ioctls that were present in 0.0.15 for
compatibility purposes are now gone, and replaced with the new ioctl which
allows for multiple push buffers to be submitted (necessary for hw index
buffers in the nv50 3d driver) and relocations to be applied on any buffer.
A number of other ioctls (CARD_INIT, GEM_PIN, GEM_UNPIN) that were needed
for userspace modesetting have also been removed.

Allocating multiple pages of memory for data that is coming
from user space may fail. To fix memory allocation failures
the buffer object should be split to multiple independ pages.
drm buffer provides generic interface to copy and process
large data arrays from user space.
Interface includes allocation and free functions to allocate
the buffer object and data storage pages.
All access operations are performed relative to a internal
pointer which is advanced with drm_buffer_advance function.
The buffer can be accessed using drm_buffer_pointer_to_XXX
functions if it is known that requested object doesn't split
over a page boundary. These functions don't do any error
checking to maximize performance.
If there is large object which could be split there is special
drm_buffer_read_object function. drm_buffer_read_object takes
a pointer as argument which is used as temporary store for
data if it is split over boundary in the buffer.

This patch adds a new execbuf ioctl, execbuf2, for use by clients that
want to control fence register allocation more finely. The buffer
passed in to the new ioctl includes a new relocation type to indicate
whether a given object needs a fence register assigned for the command
buffer in question.
Compatibility with the existing execbuf ioctl is implemented in terms
of the new code, preserving the assumption that fence registers are
required for pre-965 rendering commands.

drm_ioctl is called with the Big Kernel Lock held,
which shows up very high in statistics on vfs_ioctl.
Moving the lock into the drm_ioctl function itself
makes sure we blame the right subsystem and it gets
us one step closer to eliminating the locked version
of fops->ioctl.
Since drm_ioctl does not require the lock itself,
we only need to hold it while calling the specific
handler. The 32 bit conversion handlers do not
interact with any other code, so they don't need
the BKL here either and can just call drm_ioctl.
As a bonus, this cleans up all the other users
of drm_ioctl which now no longer have to find
the inode or call lock_kernel.

This commit adds the vmwgfx driver for the VWware Virtual GPU aka SVGA.
The driver is under staging the same as Nouveau and Radeon KMS. Hopefully

This adds a drm/kms staging non-API stable driver for GPUs from NVIDIA.
This driver is a KMS-based driver and requires a compatible nouveau
userspace libdrm and nouveau X.org driver.
This driver requires firmware files not available in this kernel tree,
interested parties can find them via the nouveau project git archive.
This driver is reverse engineered, and is in no way supported by nVidia.
Support for nearly the complete range of nvidia hw from nv04->g80 (nv50)
is available, and the kms driver should support driving nearly all
output types (displayport is under development still) along with supporting
suspend/resume.
This work is all from the upstream nouveau project found at

rename to ttm_bo_init for consistency with function naming. This
allow to give more complex placement at buffer creation. For
instance you ask to allocate bo into vram first but if there is
not enough vram you can give system as a second possible

This change allow driver to pass sorted memory placement,
from most prefered placement to least prefered placement.
In order to avoid long function prototype a structure is
used to gather memory placement informations such as range
restriction (if you need a buffer to be in given range).
Range restriction is determined by fpfn & lpfn which are
the first page and last page number btw which allocation
can happen. If those fields are set to 0 ttm will assume
buffer can be put anywhere in the address space (thus it
avoids putting a burden on the driver to always properly
set those fields).
This patch also factor few functions like evicting first
entry of lru list or getting a memory space. This avoid
code duplication.
V2: Change API to use placement flags and array instead
of packing placement order into a quadword.
V3: Make sure we set the appropriate mem.placement flag

The vmwgfx driver has a per master rw lock around TTM, to guarantee
mutual exclusion when needed.
This is typically when all evictable buffers are evicted due to
1) vt switch
2) master switch
3) suspend / resume.
In the multi-master case, on master switch the new master takes the
previously active master lock in write mode, and then evicts all
buffers. Any clients to previous masters will then block on that lock
when trying to validate a buffer. fbdev also acts as a virtual master
wrt this.

In current vblank-wait implementation, if we turn off VGA output,
drm_wait_vblank will still wait on the disabled pipe until timeout,
because vblank on the pipe is assumed be enabled. This would cause
slow system response on some system such as moblin.
This patch resolve the issue by adding a drm helper function
drm_vblank_off which explicitly clear vblank_enabled[crtc], wake up
any waiting queue and save last vblank counter before turning off
crtc. It also slightly change drm_vblank_get to ensure that we will

This adds a page flipping ioctl to the KMS API. The ioctl takes an fb ID
and a ctrc ID and flips the crtc to the given fb at the next vblank.
The ioctl returns immediately but the flip doesn't happen until after
any rendering that's currently queued up against the new framebuffer
is done. After submitting a page flip, any execbuffer involving the
old front buffer will block until the flip is completed.

This implements intel overlay support for kms via a device-specific
ioctl. Thomas Hellstrom brought up the idea of a general ioctl (on
dri-devel). We've reached the conclusion that such an infrastructure
only makes sense when multiple kms overlay implementations exists,
which atm don't (and it doesn't look like this is gonna change).
Open issues:
- Runs in sync with the gpu, i.e. unnecessary waiting. I've decided
to wait on this because the hw tends to hang when changing something
in this area. I left some dummy functions as infrastructure.
- polyphase filtering uses a static table.
- uses uninterruptible sleeps. Unfortunately the alternatives may
unnecessarily wedged the hw if/when we timeout too early (and
userspace only overloaded the batch buffers with stuff worth a few
secs of gpu time).
Changes since v1:
- fix off-by-one misconception on my side. This fixes fullscreen
playback.
Changes since v2:
- add underrun detection as spec'ed for i965.
- flush caches properly, fixing visual corruptions.
Changes since v4:
- fix up cache flushing of overlay memory regs.
- killed require_pipe_a logic - it hangs the chip.

This uses the normal video= command line option to control the kms

done by kms.
video= normally takes a framebuffer as the first parameter, in kms
it will take a connector name, DVI-I-1, or LVDS-1 etc. If no output
connector is specified the mode string will apply to all connectors.
The mode specification used will match down the probed modes, and if
no mode is found it will add a CVT mode that matches.
video=1024x768 - all connectors match a 1024x768 mode or add a CVT on
video=VGA-1:1024x768, VGA-1 connector gets mode only.

VGA arb requires KMS support for GPUs where we can turn off VGA

Similar to the madvise() concept, the application may wish to mark some

free to discard such buffers safe in the knowledge that the application

This refactors the i915 and radeon kms fbdev interaction layers

that the names were a bit confusing. I've corrected them according to
our discussion on IRC and the mailing list, though I've left out
potential new additions for a new scaling property with an integer (or

addition of a single new type and a new property to describe the

In order to avoid backward compatibility issue and to allow clean
design and code the radeon kernel modesetting use different code path
than old radeon/drm driver.
When kernel modesetting is enabled the IOCTL of radeon/drm
driver are considered as invalid and an error message is printed
in the log and they return failure.
KMS enabled userspace will use new API to talk with the radeon/drm
driver. The new API provide functions to create/destroy/share/mmap
buffer object which are then managed by the kernel memory manager
(here TTM). In order to submit command to the GPU the userspace
provide a buffer holding the command stream, along this buffer
userspace have to provide a list of buffer object used by the
command stream. The kernel radeon driver will then place buffer
in GPU accessible memory and will update command stream to reflect
the position of the different buffers.
The kernel will also perform security check on command stream
provided by the user, we want to catch and forbid any illegal use
of the GPU such as DMA into random system memory or into memory
not owned by the process supplying the command stream. This part
of the code is still incomplete and this why we propose that patch
as a staging driver addition, future security might forbid current
experimental userspace to run.
This code support the following hardware : R1XX,R2XX,R3XX,R4XX,R5XX
(radeon up to X1950). Works is underway to provide support for R6XX,
R7XX and newer hardware (radeon from HD2XXX to HD4XXX).

TTM is a GPU memory manager subsystem designed for use with GPU
devices with various memory types (On-card VRAM, AGP,
PCI apertures etc.). It's essentially a helper library that assists
the DRM driver in creating and managing persistent buffer objects.
TTM manages placement of data and CPU map setup and teardown on
data movement. It can also optionally manage synchronization of
data on a per-buffer-object level.
TTM takes care to provide an always valid virtual user-space address
to a buffer object which makes user-space sub-allocation of
big buffer objects feasible.
TTM uses a fine-grained per buffer-object locking scheme, taking
care to release all relevant locks when waiting for the GPU.
Although this implies some locking overhead, it's probably a big
win for devices with multiple command submission mechanisms, since
the lock contention will be minimal.
TTM can be used with whatever user-space interface the driver
chooses, including GEM. It's used by the upcoming Radeon KMS DRM driver
and is also the GPU memory management core of various new experimental
DRM drivers.

Now all the DRM debug info will be reported if the boot option of
"drm.debug=1" is added. Sometimes it is inconvenient to get the debug
info in KMS mode. We will get too much unrelated info.
This will separate several DRM debug levels and the debug level can be used
to print the different debug info. And the debug level is controlled by the
module parameter of drm.debug
In this patch it is divided into four debug levels;
drm_core, drm_driver, drm_kms, drm_mode.
At the same time we can get the different debug info by changing the debug
level. This can be done by adding the module parameter. Of course it can
be changed through the /sys/module/drm/parameters/debug after the system is
booted.
Four debug macro definitions are provided.
DRM_DEBUG(fmt, args...)
DRM_DEBUG_DRIVER(prefix, fmt, args...)
DRM_DEBUG_KMS(prefix, fmt, args...)
DRM_DEBUG_MODE(prefix, fmt, args...)
When the boot option of "drm.debug=4" is added, it will print the debug info
using DRM_DEBUG_KMS macro definition.
When the boot option of "drm.debug=6" is added, it will print the debug info
using DRM_DEBUG_KMS/DRM_DEBUG_DRIVER.
Sometimes we expect to print the value of an array.

Making the drm_crtc.c code recognize the DPMS property and invoke the
connector->dpms function doesn't remove any capability from the driver while
reducing code duplication.
That just highlighted the problem with the existing DPMS functions which
could turn off the connector, but failed to turn off any relevant crtcs. The
new drm_helper_connector_dpms function manages all of that, using the
drm_helper-specific crtc and encoder dpms functions, automatically computing
the appropriate DPMS level for each object in the system.

For awhile now, many of the GEM code paths have allocated page or
object arrays with the slab allocator. This is nice and fast, but
won't work well if memory is fragmented, since the slab allocator works
with physically contiguous memory (i.e. order > 2 allocations are
likely to fail fairly early after booting and doing some work).
This patch works around the issue by falling back to vmalloc for
>PAGE_SIZE allocations. This is ugly, but much less work than chaining
a bunch of pages together by hand (suprisingly there's not a bunch of
generic kernel helpers for this yet afaik). vmalloc space is somewhat
precious on 32 bit kernels, but our allocations shouldn't be big enough
to cause problems, though they're routinely more than a page.
Note that this patch doesn't address the unchecked
alloc-based-on-ioctl-args in GEM; that needs to be fixed in a separate
patch.
Also, I've deliberately ignored the DRM's "area" junk. I don't think
anyone actually uses it anymore and I'm hoping it gets ripped out soon.
[Updated: removed size arg to new free function. We could unify the
free functions as well once the DRM mem tracking is ripped out.]

The kernel shouldn't be in the business of telling user space which
driver to load. The kernel defers mapping PCI IDs to module names
to user space and we should do the same for DRI drivers.
And in fact, that's how it does work today. Nothing uses the
dri_library_name attribute, and the attribute is in fact broken.
For intel devices, it falls back to the default behaviour of returning
the kernel module name as the DRI driver name, which doesn't work for

of VT switching and X servers, so the only decent thing to do is to
claim the PCI device. In that case, we call the suspend/resume hooks
directly from the pci driver hooks instead of the current class device detour.

This changes drm_local_map to use a resource_size for its "offset"
member instead of an unsigned long, thus allowing 32-bit machines
with a >32-bit physical address space to be able to store there
their register or framebuffer addresses when those are above 4G,
such as when using a PCI video card on a recent AMCC 440 SoC.
This patch isn't as "trivial" as it sounds: A few functions needed
to have some unsigned long/int changed to resource_size_t and a few
printk's had to be adjusted.
But also, because userspace isn't capable of passing such offsets,
I had to modify drm_find_matching_map() to ignore the offset passed
in for maps of type _DRM_FRAMEBUFFER or _DRM_REGISTERS.
If we ever support multiple _DRM_FRAMEBUFFER or _DRM_REGISTERS maps
for a given device, we might have to change that trick, but I don't
think that happens on any current driver.

Once upon a time, the DRM made the distinction between the drm_map
data structure exchanged with user space and the drm_local_map used
in the kernel.
For some reasons, while the BSD port still has that "feature", the
linux part abused drm_map for kernel internal usage as the local
map only existed as a typedef of the struct drm_map.
This patch fixes it by declaring struct drm_local_map separately
(though its content is currently identical to the userspace variant),
and changing the kernel code to only use that, except when it's a
user<->kernel interface (ie. ioctl).
This allows subsequent changes to the in-kernel format
I've also replaced the use of drm_local_map_t with struct drm_local_map
in a couple of places. Mostly by accident but they are the same (the
former is a typedef of the later) and I have some remote plans and
half finished patch to completely kill the drm_local_map_t typedef
so I left those bits in.

The DRM uses its own wrappers to obtain resources from PCI devices,
which currently convert the resource_size_t into an unsigned long.
This is broken on 32-bit platforms with >32-bit physical address
space.
This fixes them, along with a few occurences of unsigned long used
to store such a resource in drivers.

Adds code to set up fence registers at execbuf time on pre-965 chips as
necessary. Also fixes up a few bugs in the pre-965 tile register support
(get_order != ffs). The number of fences available to the kernel defaults
to the hw limit minus 3 (for legacy X front/back/depth), but a new parameter

Create a separate mode_config IDR lock for simplicity. The core DRM
config structures (connector, mode, etc. lists) are still protected by
the mode_config mutex, but the CRTC IDR (used for the various identifier
IDs) is now protected by the mode_config idr_mutex. Simplifies the
locking a bit and removes a warning.
All objects are protected by the config mutex, we may in the future,
split the object further to have reference counts.

When mode setting is first initialized, the driver will call into
drm_helper_initial_config() to set up an initial output and framebuffer
configuration. This routine is responsible for probing the available
connectors, encoders, and crtcs, looking for modes and putting together
something reasonable (where reasonable is defined as "allows kernel
messages to be visible on as many displays as possible").
However, the code was a bit too aggressive in setting default modes when
none were found on a given connector. Even if some connectors had modes,
any connectors found lacking modes would have the default 800x600 mode added
to their mode list, which in some cases could cause problems later down the
line. In my case, the LVDS was perfectly available, but the initial config
code added 800x600 modes to both of the detected but unavailable HDMI
connectors (which are on my non-existent docking station). This ended up
preventing later code from setting a mode on my LVDS, which is bad.
This patch fixes that behavior by making the initial config code walk
through the connectors first, counting the available modes, before it decides
to add any default modes to a possibly connected output. It also fixes the
logic in drm_target_preferred() that was causing zeroed out modes to be set
as the preferred mode for a given connector, even if no modes were available.

This commit adds i915 driver support for the DRM mode setting APIs.
Currently, VGA, LVDS, SDVO DVI & VGA, TV and DVO LVDS outputs are
supported. HDMI, DisplayPort and additional SDVO output support will
follow.
Support for the mode setting code is controlled by the new 'modeset'
module option. A new config option, CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS controls the
default behavior, and whether a PCI ID list is built into the module for
use by user level module utilities.
Note that if mode setting is enabled, user level drivers that access
display registers directly or that don't use the kernel graphics memory
manager will likely corrupt kernel graphics memory, disrupt output
configuration (possibly leading to hangs and/or blank displays), and
prevent panic/oops messages from appearing. So use caution when
enabling this code; be sure your user level code supports the new
interfaces.
A new SysRq key, 'g', provides emergency support for switching back to
the kernel's framebuffer console; which is useful for testing.

Add mode setting support to the DRM layer.
This is a fairly big chunk of work that allows DRM drivers to provide
full output control and configuration capabilities to userspace. It was
motivated by several factors:
- the fb layer's APIs aren't suited for anything but simple
configurations
- coordination between the fb layer, DRM layer, and various userspace
drivers is poor to non-existent (radeonfb excepted)
- user level mode setting drivers makes displaying panic & oops
messages more difficult
- suspend/resume of graphics state is possible in many more
configurations with kernel level support
This commit just adds the core DRM part of the mode setting APIs.
Driver specific commits using these new structure and APIs will follow.

...so drm_getunique() is trying to copy some uninitialized data to
userspace. The ECX register contains the number of words that are
left to copy -- so there are 5 * 4 = 20 bytes left. The offset of the
first uninitialized byte (counting from the start of the string) is
also 20 (i.e. 0xf65d2294&((1 << 5)-1) == 20). So somebody tried to
copy 40 bytes when the string was only 19 long.
In drm_set_busid() we have this code:
dev->unique_len = 40;
dev->unique = drm_alloc(dev->unique_len + 1, DRM_MEM_DRIVER);
...
len = snprintf(dev->unique, dev->unique_len, pci:%04x:%02x:%02x.%d",
...so it seems that dev->unique is never updated to reflect the
actual length of the string. The remaining bytes (20 in this case)
are random uninitialized bytes that are copied into userspace.
This patch fixes the problem by setting dev->unique_len after the
snprintf().

This is step one towards having multiple masters sharing a drm
device in order to get fast-user-switching to work.
It splits out the information associated with the drm master
into a separate kref counted structure, and allocates this when
a master opens the device node. It also allows the current master
to abdicate (say while VT switched), and a new master to take over
the hardware.
It moves the Intel and radeon drivers to using the sarea from
within the new master structures.

GEM allows the creation of persistent buffer objects accessible by the
graphics device through new ioctls for managing execution of commands on the
device. The userland API is almost entirely driver-specific to ensure that
any driver building on this model can easily map the interface to individual
driver requirements.
GEM is used by the 2d driver for managing its internal state allocations and
will be used for pixmap storage to reduce memory consumption and enable
zero-copy GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, and in the 3d driver is used to enable
GL_EXT_framebuffer_object and GL_ARB_pixel_buffer_object.

Previously, drivers supporting vblank interrupt waits would run the interrupt
all the time, or all the time that any 3d client was running, preventing the
CPU from sleeping for long when the system was otherwise idle. Now, interrupts
are disabled any time that no client is waiting on a vblank event. The new
method uses vblank counters on the chipsets when the interrupts are turned
off, rather than counting interrupts, so that we can continue to present
accurate vblank numbers.

This restructures the drm along the lines of other kernel components.
