This complex struct pulling in half the driver deserves its own
isolation in preparation for intel_context becoming an outright
complicated class of its own.

As kmem_caches share the same properties (size, allocation/free behaviour)
for all potential devices, we can use global caches. While this
potential has worse fragmentation behaviour (one can argue that
different devices would have different activity lifetimes, but you can
also argue that activity is temporal across the system) it is the
default behaviour of the system at large to amalgamate matching caches.
The benefit for us is much reduced pointer dancing along the frequent
allocation paths.

We currently track GPU memory usage inside VMA, such that we never
release memory used by the GPU until after it has finished accessing it.
However, we may want to track other resources aside from VMA, or we may
want to split a VMA into multiple independent regions and track each
separately. For this purpose, generalise our request tracking (akin to
struct reservation_object) so that we can embed it into other objects.

Before adding yet another copy of struct live_test and its handler,
refactor the existing code into a common framework for live selftests.
For many live selftests, we want to know if the GPU hung or otherwise
misbehaved during the execution of the test (beyond any infraction in
the behaviour under test), live_test provides this by comparing the
GPU state before and after, alerting if it unexpectedly changed (e.g.
the reset counter changed). It also ensures that the GPU is idle before
and after the test, so that residual code running on the GPU is flushed
before testing.

This trys to make 'kvmgt' module as self loadable instead of loading
by i915/gvt device model. So hypervisor specific module could be
stand-alone, e.g only after loading hypervisor specific module, GVT
feature could be enabled via specific hypervisor interface, e.g VFIO/mdev.
So this trys to use hypervisor module register/unregister interface
for that. Hypervisor module needs to take care of module reference
itself when working for hypervisor interface, e.g for VFIO/mdev,
hypervisor module would reference counting mdev when open and release.
This makes 'kvmgt' module really split from GVT device model. User

We need to move to a more flexible timeline that doesn't assume one
fence context per engine, and so allow for a single timeline to be used
across a combination of engines. This means that preallocating a fence
context per engine is now a hindrance, and so we want to introduce the
singular timeline. From the code perspective, this has the notable
advantage of clearing up a lot of mirky semantics and some clumsy
pointer chasing.
By splitting the timeline up into a single entity rather than an array
of per-engine timelines, we can realise the goal of the previous patch
of tracking the timeline alongside the ring.

Hardware may have specific restrictions on GuC WOPCM offset and size. On
Gen9, the value of the GuC WOPCM size register needs to be larger than the
value of GuC WOPCM offset register + a Gen9 specific offset (144KB) for
reserved GuC WOPCM. Fail to enforce such a restriction on GuC WOPCM size
will lead to GuC firmware execution failures. On the other hand, with
current static GuC WOPCM offset and size values (512KB for both offset and
size), the GuC WOPCM size verification will fail on Gen9 even if it can be
fixed by lowering the GuC WOPCM offset by calculating its value based on
HuC firmware size (which is likely less than 200KB on Gen9), so that we can
have a GuC WOPCM size value which is large enough to pass the GuC WOPCM
size check.
This patch updates the reserved GuC WOPCM size for RC6 context on Gen9 to
24KB to strictly align with the Gen9 GuC WOPCM layout. It also adds support
to verify the GuC WOPCM size aganist the Gen9 hardware restrictions. To
meet all above requirements, let's provide dynamic partitioning of the

There are a number of information that are readable from hardware
registers and that we would like to make accessible to userspace. One
particular example is the topology of the execution units (how are
execution units grouped in subslices and slices and also which ones
have been fused off for die recovery).
At the moment the GET_PARAM ioctl covers some basic needs, but
generally is only able to return a single value for each defined
parameter. This is a bit problematic with topology descriptions which
are array/maps of available units.
This change introduces a new ioctl that can deal with requests to fill
structures of potentially variable lengths. The user is expected fill
a query with length fields set at 0 on the first call, the kernel then
sets the length fields to the their expected values. A second call to
the kernel with length fields at their expected values will trigger a
copy of the data to the pointed memory locations.
The scope of this uAPI is only to provide information to userspace,
not to allow configuration of the device.

drm/i915/execlists: Remove too early assert

...
We want to de-emphasize the link between the request (dependency,
execution and fence tracking) from GEM and so rename the struct from
drm_i915_gem_request to i915_request. That is we may implement the GEM
user interface on top of requests, but they are an abstraction for
tracking execution rather than an implementation detail of GEM. (Since
they are not tied to HW, we keep the i915 prefix as opposed to intel.)
In short, the spatch:
@@
@@
- struct drm_i915_gem_request
+ struct i915_request
A corollary to contracting the type name, we also harmonise on using
'rq' shorthand for local variables where space if of the essence and
repetition makes 'request' unwieldy. For globals and struct members,
'request' is still much preferred for its clarity.

This patch adds the framework required to add HDCP support to intel
connectors. It implements Aksv loading from fuse, and parts 1/2/3
of the HDCP authentication scheme.
Note that without shim implementations, this does not actually implement
HDCP. That will come in subsequent patches.

Similarly, we need to access GuC logs and even if GuC submission

From: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk>
From: Tvrtko Ursulin <tvrtko.ursulin@intel.com>
From: Dmitry Rogozhkin <dmitry.v.rogozhkin@intel.com>
The first goal is to be able to measure GPU (and invidual ring) busyness
without having to poll registers from userspace. (Which not only incurs
holding the forcewake lock indefinitely, perturbing the system, but also
runs the risk of hanging the machine.) As an alternative we can use the
perf event counter interface to sample the ring registers periodically
and send those results to userspace.
Functionality we are exporting to userspace is via the existing perf PMU
API and can be exercised via the existing tools. For example:
perf stat -a -e i915/rcs0-busy/ -I 1000
Will print the render engine busynnes once per second. All the performance
counters can be enumerated (perf list) and have their unit of measure
correctly reported in sysfs.
v1-v2 (Chris Wilson):
v2: Use a common timer for the ring sampling.
v3: (Tvrtko Ursulin)
* Decouple uAPI from i915 engine ids.
* Complete uAPI defines.
* Refactor some code to helpers for clarity.
* Skip sampling disabled engines.
* Expose counters in sysfs.
* Pass in fake regs to avoid null ptr deref in perf core.
* Convert to class/instance uAPI.
* Use shared driver code for rc6 residency, power and frequency.
v4: (Dmitry Rogozhkin)
* Register PMU with .task_ctx_nr=perf_invalid_context
* Expose cpumask for the PMU with the single CPU in the mask
* Properly support pmu->stop(): it should call pmu->read()
* Properly support pmu->del(): it should call stop(event, PERF_EF_UPDATE)
* Introduce refcounting of event subscriptions.
* Make pmu.busy_stats a refcounter to avoid busy stats going away
with some deleted event.
* Expose cpumask for i915 PMU to avoid multiple events creation of
the same type followed by counter aggregation by perf-stat.
* Track CPUs getting online/offline to migrate perf context. If (likely)
cpumask will initially set CPU0, CONFIG_BOOTPARAM_HOTPLUG_CPU0 will be
needed to see effect of CPU status tracking.
* End result is that only global events are supported and perf stat
works correctly.
* Deny perf driver level sampling - it is prohibited for uncore PMU.
v5: (Tvrtko Ursulin)
* Don't hardcode number of engine samplers.
* Rewrite event ref-counting for correctness and simplicity.
* Store initial counter value when starting already enabled events
to correctly report values to all listeners.
* Fix RC6 residency readout.
* Comments, GPL header.
v6:
* Add missing entry to v4 changelog.
* Fix accounting in CPU hotplug case by copying the approach from
arch/x86/events/intel/cstate.c. (Dmitry Rogozhkin)
v7:
* Log failure message only on failure.
* Remove CPU hotplug notification state on unregister.
v8:
* Fix error unwind on failed registration.
* Checkpatch cleanup.
v9:
* Drop the energy metric, it is available via intel_rapl_perf.
(Ville Syrjälä)
* Use HAS_RC6(p). (Chris Wilson)
* Handle unsupported non-engine events. (Dmitry Rogozhkin)
* Rebase for intel_rc6_residency_ns needing caller managed
runtime pm.
* Drop HAS_RC6 checks from the read callback since creating those
events will be rejected at init time already.
* Add counter units to sysfs so perf stat output is nicer.
* Cleanup the attribute tables for brevity and readability.
v10:
* Fixed queued accounting.
v11:
* Move intel_engine_lookup_user to intel_engine_cs.c
* Commit update. (Joonas Lahtinen)
v12:
* More accurate sampling. (Chris Wilson)
* Store and report frequency in MHz for better usability from
perf stat.
* Removed metrics: queued, interrupts, rc6 counters.
* Sample engine busyness based on seqno difference only
for less MMIO (and forcewake) on all platforms. (Chris Wilson)
v13:
* Comment spelling, use mul_u32_u32 to work around potential GCC
issue and somne code alignment changes. (Chris Wilson)
v14:
* Rebase.
v15:
* Rebase for RPS refactoring.
v16:
* Use the dynamic slot in the CPU hotplug state machine so that we are
free to setup our state as multi-instance. Previously we were re-using
the CPUHP_AP_PERF_X86_UNCORE_ONLINE slot which is neither used as
multi-instance, nor owned by our driver to start with.
* Register the CPU hotplug handlers after the PMU, otherwise the callback
will get called before the PMU is initialized which can end up in
perf_pmu_migrate_context with an un-initialized base.
* Added workaround for a probable bug in cpuhp core.
v17:
* Remove workaround for the cpuhp bug.
v18:
* Rebase for drm_i915_gem_engine_class getting upstream before us.
v19:
* Rebase. (trivial)

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

To quote kbuild/makefiles.txt:
cc-disable-warning checks if gcc supports a given warning and returns
the commandline switch to disable it. This special function is needed,
because gcc 4.4 and later accept any unknown -Wno-* option and only
warn about it if there is another warning in the source file.
This is exactly what we were trying to achieve with cc-option -Wno-foo and
failed miserably.

Recently W=1 on gcc-7.2 (-Wunused-const-variable) caught a regression
that had been lurking for 6 months, so lets try enabling the full set of
warnings for CI builds. This means more patches will be rejected early
that contain trivial and sometimes not so trivial bugs. However, our
code does not yet compile cleanly with W=1, so we have to apply a filter
to the set of warnings until we can eliminate the mistakes. It also
means that developers will have to be running the full gamut of gcc to
ensure that as warnings come and go with gcc updates, we have the CI
build prepared.
v2: Use fine-grained -Wno overrides. Inside the makefile, we can
specify CFLAGS on a per-object level, which allows us to limit the scope
of any particular warning override.
v3: Place per-file overrides after the main enabling block.

The header comment in include/trace/define_trace.h specifies that the
TRACE_INCLUDE_PATH needs to be relative to the define_trace.h header
rather than the trace file including it. Most instances get that wrong
and work around it by adding the $(src) directory to the include path.
While this works, it is preferable to refer to the correct path to the
trace file in the first place and avoid any workaround.

Another month, another story in the cache coherency saga. This time, we
come to the realisation that i915_gem_object_is_coherent() has been
reporting whether we can read from the target without requiring a cache
invalidate; but we were using it in places for testing whether we could
write into the object without requiring a cache flush. So split the
tracking into two, one to decide before reads, one after writes.
See commit e27ab73d17 ("drm/i915: Mark CPU cache as dirty on every
transition for CPU writes") for the previous entry in this saga.
v2: Be verbose
v3: Remove unused function (i915_gem_object_is_coherent)
v4: Fix inverted coherency check prior to execbuf (from v2)
v5: Add comment for nasty code where we are optimising on gcc's behalf.

Track the latest fence waited upon on each context, and only add a new
asynchronous wait if the new fence is more recent than the recorded
fence for that context. This requires us to filter out unordered
timelines, which are noted by DMA_FENCE_NO_CONTEXT. However, in the
absence of a universal identifier, we have to use our own
i915->mm.unordered_timeline token.
v2: Throw around the debug crutches
v3: Inline the likely case of the pre-allocation cache being full.
v4: Drop the pre-allocation support, we can lose the most recent fence
in case of allocation failure -- it just means we may emit more awaits
than strictly necessary but will not break.

not pointers.

Pull drm updates from Dave Airlie:
"This is the main drm pull request for v4.11.
Nothing too major, the tinydrm and mmu-less support should make
writing smaller drivers easier for some of the simpler platforms, and
there are a bunch of documentation updates.
Intel grew displayport MST audio support which is hopefully useful to
people, and FBC is on by default for GEN9+ (so people know where to
look for regressions). AMDGPU has a lot of fixes that would like new
firmware files installed for some GPUs.
Other than that it's pretty scattered all over.
I may have a follow up pull request as I know BenH has a bunch of AST

Flushing the cachelines for an object is slow, can be as much as 100ms
for a large framebuffer. We currently do this under the struct_mutex BKL
on execution or on pageflip. But now with the ability to add fences to
obj->resv for both flips and execbuf (and we naturally wait on the fence
before CPU access), we can move the clflush operation to a workqueue and
signal a fence for completion, thereby doing the work asynchronously and
not blocking the driver or its clients.
v2: Introduce i915_gem_clflush.h and use a new name, split out some
extras into separate patches.

Some pieces of code are independent of hardware but are very tricky to
exercise through the normal userspace ABI or via debugfs hooks. Being
able to create mock unit tests and execute them through CI is vital.
Start by adding a central point where we can execute unit tests and
a parameter to enable them. This is disabled by default as the
expectation is that these tests will occasionally explode.
To facilitate integration with igt, any parameter beginning with
i915.igt__ is interpreted as a subtest executable independently via
igt/drv_selftest.
Two classes of selftests are recognised: mock unit tests and integration
tests. Mock unit tests are run as soon as the module is loaded, before
the device is probed. At that point there is no driver instantiated and
all hw interactions must be "mocked". This is very useful for writing
universal tests to exercise code not typically run on a broad range of
architectures. Alternatively, you can hook into the live selftests and
run when the device has been instantiated - hw interactions are real.
v2: Add a macro for compiling conditional code for mock objects inside
real objects.
v3: Differentiate between mock unit tests and late integration test.

Adds base i915 perf infrastructure for Gen performance metrics.
This adds a DRM_IOCTL_I915_PERF_OPEN ioctl that takes an array of uint64
properties to configure a stream of metrics and returns a new fd usable
with standard VFS system calls including read() to read typed and sized
records; ioctl() to enable or disable capture and poll() to wait for
data.
A stream is opened something like:
uint64_t properties[] = {
/* Single context sampling */
DRM_I915_PERF_PROP_CTX_HANDLE, ctx_handle,
/* Include OA reports in samples */
DRM_I915_PERF_PROP_SAMPLE_OA, true,
/* OA unit configuration */

};
struct drm_i915_perf_open_param parm = {

I915_PERF_FLAG_FD_NONBLOCK |
I915_PERF_FLAG_DISABLED,
.properties_ptr = (uint64_t)properties,
.num_properties = sizeof(properties) / 16,
};
int fd = drmIoctl(drm_fd, DRM_IOCTL_I915_PERF_OPEN, ¶m);
Records read all start with a common { type, size } header with
DRM_I915_PERF_RECORD_SAMPLE being of most interest. Sample records
contain an extensible number of fields and it's the
DRM_I915_PERF_PROP_SAMPLE_xyz properties given when opening that
determine what's included in every sample.
No specific streams are supported yet so any attempt to open a stream
will return an error.

Our timelines are more than just a seqno. They also provide an ordered
list of requests to be executed. Due to the restriction of handling
individual address spaces, we are limited to a timeline per address
space but we use a fence context per engine within.
Our first step to introducing independent timelines per context (i.e. to
allow each context to have a queue of requests to execute that have a
defined set of dependencies on other requests) is to provide a timeline
abstraction for the global execution queue.

Quite a few of our objects used for internal hardware programming do not
benefit from being swappable or from being zero initialised. As such
they do not benefit from using a shmemfs backing storage and since they
are internal and never directly exposed to the user, we do not need to
worry about providing a filp. For these we can use an
drm_i915_gem_object wrapper around a sg_table of plain struct page. They
are not swap backed and not automatically pinned. If they are reaped
by the shrinker, the pages are released and the contents discarded. For
the internal use case, this is fine as for example, ringbuffers are
pinned from being written by a request to be read by the hardware. Once
they are idle, they can be discarded entirely. As such they are a good
match for execlist ringbuffers and a small variety of other internal
objects.
In the first iteration, this is limited to the scratch batch buffers we
use (for command parsing and state initialisation).

We currently capture the GPU state after we detect a hang. This is vital
for us to both triage and debug hangs in the wild (post-mortem
debugging). However, it comes at the cost of running some potentially
dangerous code (since it has to make very few assumption about the state
of the driver) that is quite resource intensive.
This patch introduces both a method to disable error capture at runtime
(for users who hit bugs at runtime and need a workaround) and to disable
error capture at compiletime (for realtime users who want to minimise
any possible latency, and never require error capture, saving ~30k of
code). The cost is that we now have to be wary of (and test!) a kconfig
flag and a module parameter. The effect of the module parameter is easy
to verify through code inspection and runtime testing, but a kconfig flag
needs regular compile checking.

This is really a core kernel struct in disguise until we can finally
place it in kernel/. There is an immediate need for a fence collection
mechanism that is more flexible than fence-array, in particular being
able to easily drive request submission via events (and not just

This patch provides the infrastructure for performing a 16-byte aligned
read from WC memory using non-temporal instructions introduced with sse4.1.
Using movntdqa we can bypass the CPU caches and read directly from memory
and ignoring the page attributes set on the CPU PTE i.e. negating the
impact of an otherwise UC access. Copying using movntdqa from WC is almost
as fast as reading from WB memory, modulo the possibility of both hitting
the CPU cache or leaving the data in the CPU cache for the next consumer.
(The CPU cache itself my be flushed for the region of the movntdqa and on
later access the movntdqa reads from a separate internal buffer for the
cacheline.) The write back to the memory is however cached.
This will be used in later patches to accelerate accessing WC memory.
v2: Report whether the accelerated copy is successful/possible.
v3: Function alignment override was only necessary when using the
function target("sse4.1") - which is not necessary for emitting movntdqa
from __asm__.

With the introduction of requests, we amplified the number of atomic
refcounted objects we use and update every execbuffer; from none to
several references, and a set of references that need to be changed. We
also introduced interesting side-effects in the order of retiring
requests and objects.
Instead of independently tracking the last request for an object, track
the active objects for each request. The object will reside in the
buffer list of its most recent active request and so we reduce the kref
interchange to a list_move. Now retirements are entirely driven by the
request, dramatically simplifying activity tracking on the object
themselves, and removing the ambiguity between retiring objects and
retiring requests.
Furthermore with the consolidation of managing the activity tracking
centrally, we can look forward to using RCU to enable lockless lookup of
the current active requests for an object. In the future, we will be
able to query the status or wait upon rendering to an object without
even touching the struct_mutex BKL.
All told, less code, simpler and faster, and more extensible.
v2: Add a typedef for the function pointer for convenience later.
v3: Make the noop retirement callback explicit. Allow passing NULL to

One particularly stressful scenario consists of many independent tasks
all competing for GPU time and waiting upon the results (e.g. realtime
transcoding of many, many streams). One bottleneck in particular is that
each client waits on its own results, but every client is woken up after
every batchbuffer - hence the thunder of hooves as then every client must
do its heavyweight dance to read a coherent seqno to see if it is the
lucky one.
Ideally, we only want one client to wake up after the interrupt and
check its request for completion. Since the requests must retire in
order, we can select the first client on the oldest request to be woken.
Once that client has completed his wait, we can then wake up the
next client and so on. However, all clients then incur latency as every
process in the chain may be delayed for scheduling - this may also then
cause some priority inversion. To reduce the latency, when a client
is added or removed from the list, we scan the tree for completed
seqno and wake up all the completed waiters in parallel.
Using igt/benchmarks/gem_latency, we can demonstrate this effect. The
benchmark measures the number of GPU cycles between completion of a
batch and the client waking up from a call to wait-ioctl. With many
concurrent waiters, with each on a different request, we observe that
the wakeup latency before the patch scales nearly linearly with the
number of waiters (before external factors kick in making the scaling much
worse). After applying the patch, we can see that only the single waiter
for the request is being woken up, providing a constant wakeup latency
for every operation. However, the situation is not quite as rosy for
many waiters on the same request, though to the best of my knowledge this
is much less likely in practice. Here, we can observe that the
concurrent waiters incur extra latency from being woken up by the
solitary bottom-half, rather than directly by the interrupt. This
appears to be scheduler induced (having discounted adverse effects from
having a rbtree walk/erase in the wakeup path), each additional
wake_up_process() costs approximately 1us on big core. Another effect of
performing the secondary wakeups from the first bottom-half is the
incurred delay this imposes on high priority threads - rather than
immediately returning to userspace and leaving the interrupt handler to
wake the others.
To offset the delay incurred with additional waiters on a request, we
could use a hybrid scheme that did a quick read in the interrupt handler
and dequeued all the completed waiters (incurring the overhead in the
interrupt handler, not the best plan either as we then incur GPU
submission latency) but we would still have to wake up the bottom-half
every time to do the heavyweight slow read. Or we could only kick the
waiters on the seqno with the same priority as the current task (i.e. in
the realtime waiter scenario, only it is woken up immediately by the
interrupt and simply queues the next waiter before returning to userspace,
minimising its delay at the expense of the chain, and also reducing
contention on its scheduler runqueue). This is effective at avoid long
pauses in the interrupt handler and at avoiding the extra latency in
realtime/high-priority waiters.
v2: Convert from a kworker per engine into a dedicated kthread for the
bottom-half.
v3: Rename request members and tweak comments.
v4: Use a per-engine spinlock in the breadcrumbs bottom-half.
v5: Fix race in locklessly checking waiter status and kicking the task on
adding a new waiter.
v6: Fix deciding when to force the timer to hide missing interrupts.
v7: Move the bottom-half from the kthread to the first client process.
v8: Reword a few comments
v9: Break the busy loop when the interrupt is unmasked or has fired.
v10: Comments, unnecessary churn, better debugging from Tvrtko
v11: Wake all completed waiters on removing the current bottom-half to
reduce the latency of waking up a herd of clients all waiting on the
same request.
v12: Rearrange missed-interrupt fault injection so that it works with
igt/drv_missed_irq_hang
v13: Rename intel_breadcrumb and friends to intel_wait in preparation
for signal handling.
v14: RCU commentary, assert_spin_locked
v15: Hide BUG_ON behind the compiler; report on gem_latency findings.
v16: Sort seqno-groups by priority so that first-waiter has the highest
task priority (and so avoid priority inversion).
v17: Add waiters to post-mortem GPU hang state.
v18: Return early for a completed wait after acquiring the spinlock.
Avoids adding ourselves to the tree if the is already complete, and
skips the awkward question of why we don't do completion wakeups for
waits earlier than or equal to ourselves.
v19: Prepare for init_breadcrumbs to fail. Later patches may want to
allocate during init, so be prepared to propagate back the error code.
