cleared, but no layoutreturn will be sent.

Donald Buczek reports that a nfs4 client incorrectly denies
execute access based on outdated file mode (missing 'x' bit).
After the mode on the server is 'fixed' (chmod +x) further execution
attempts continue to fail, because the nfs ACCESS call updates
the access parameter but not the mode parameter or the mode in
the inode.
The root cause is ultimately that the VFS is calling may_open()
before the NFS client has a chance to OPEN the file and hence revalidate
the access and attribute caches.
Al Viro suggests:

Commit 42cb14b110 ("mm: migrate dirty page without
clear_page_dirty_for_io etc") simplified the migration of a PageDirty
pagecache page: one stat needs moving from zone to zone and that's about
all.
It's convenient and safest for it to shift the PageDirty bit from old
page to new, just before updating the zone stats: before copying data
and marking the new PageUptodate. This is all done while both pages are
isolated and locked, just as before; and just as before, there's a
moment when the new page is visible in the radix_tree, but not yet
PageUptodate. What's new is that it may now be briefly visible as
PageDirty before it is PageUptodate.
When I scoured the tree to see if this could cause a problem anywhere,
the only places I found were in two similar functions __r4w_get_page():
which look up a page with find_get_page() (not using page lock), then
claim it's uptodate if it's PageDirty or PageWriteback or PageUptodate.
I'm not sure whether that was right before, but now it might be wrong
(on rare occasions): only claim the page is uptodate if PageUptodate.
Or perhaps the page in question could never be migratable anyway?

new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences
are:
* inode and dentry are passed separately

the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry.
* when called that way it isn't allowed to block
and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called

It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances

The btrfs clone ioctls are now adopted by other file systems, with NFS
and CIFS already having support for them, and XFS being under active
development. To avoid growth of various slightly incompatible
implementations, add one to the VFS. Note that clones are different from
file copies in several ways:
- they are atomic vs other writers
- they support whole file clones
- they support 64-bit legth clones
- they do not allow partial success (aka short writes)
- clones are expected to be a fast metadata operation
Because of that it would be rather cumbersome to try to piggyback them on
top of the recent clone_file_range infrastructure. The converse isn't
true and the clone_file_range system call could try clone file range as
a first attempt to copy, something that further patches will enable.

A truncated cb_compound request will cause the client to decode null or
data from a previous callback for nfs4.1 backchannel case, or uninitialized
data for the nfs4.0 case. This is because the path through
svc_process_common() advances the request's iov_base and decrements iov_len
without adjusting the overall xdr_buf's len field. That causes
xdr_init_decode() to set up the xdr_stream with an incorrect length in
nfs4_callback_compound().
Fixing this for the nfs4.1 backchannel case first requires setting the
correct iov_len and page_len based on the length of received data in the
same manner as the nfs4.0 case.
Then the request's xdr_buf length can be adjusted for both cases based upon
the remaining iov_len and page_len.

Without this for example 64-bit binaries on typical amd64 distributions

The value is usually large enought to clone whole files and thus let

The xattr_handler operations are currently all passed a file system
specific flags value which the operations can use to disambiguate between
different handlers; some file systems use that to distinguish the xattr
namespace, for example. In some oprations, it would be useful to also have
access to the handler prefix. To allow that, pass a pointer to the handler
to operations instead of the flags value alone.

__GFP_WAIT has been used to identify atomic context in callers that hold
spinlocks or are in interrupts. They are expected to be high priority and
have access one of two watermarks lower than "min" which can be referred
to as the "atomic reserve". __GFP_HIGH users get access to the first
lower watermark and can be called the "high priority reserve".
Over time, callers had a requirement to not block when fallback options
were available. Some have abused __GFP_WAIT leading to a situation where
an optimisitic allocation with a fallback option can access atomic
reserves.
This patch uses __GFP_ATOMIC to identify callers that are truely atomic,
cannot sleep and have no alternative. High priority users continue to use
__GFP_HIGH. __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM identifies callers that can sleep and
are willing to enter direct reclaim. __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM to identify
callers that want to wake kswapd for background reclaim. __GFP_WAIT is
redefined as a caller that is willing to enter direct reclaim and wake
kswapd for background reclaim.
This patch then converts a number of sites
o __GFP_ATOMIC is used by callers that are high priority and have memory
pools for those requests. GFP_ATOMIC uses this flag.
o Callers that have a limited mempool to guarantee forward progress clear
__GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM but keep __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. bio allocations fall
into this category where kswapd will still be woken but atomic reserves
are not used as there is a one-entry mempool to guarantee progress.
o Callers that are checking if they are non-blocking should use the
helper gfpflags_allow_blocking() where possible. This is because
checking for __GFP_WAIT as was done historically now can trigger false
positives. Some exceptions like dm-crypt.c exist where the code intent
is clearer if __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is used instead of the helper due to
flag manipulations.
o Callers that built their own GFP flags instead of starting with GFP_KERNEL
and friends now also need to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM.
The first key hazard to watch out for is callers that removed __GFP_WAIT
and was depending on access to atomic reserves for inconspicuous reasons.
In some cases it may be appropriate for them to use __GFP_HIGH.
The second key hazard is callers that assembled their own combination of
GFP flags instead of starting with something like GFP_KERNEL. They may
now wish to specify __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. It's almost certainly harmless
if it's missed in most cases as other activity will wake kswapd.

For loosely coupled pNFS/flexfiles systems, there is often no advantage
at all in going through the MDS for I/O, since the MDS is subject to
the same limitations as all other clients when talking to DSes. If a
DS is unresponsive, I/O through the MDS will fail.
For such systems, the only scalable solution is to have the pNFS clients
retry doing pNFS, and so the protocol now provides a flag that allows
the pNFS server to signal this.
If LAYOUTGET returns FF_FLAGS_NO_IO_THRU_MDS, then we should assume that
the MDS wants the client to retry using these devices, even if they were
previously marked as being unavailable. To do so, we add a helper,
ff_layout_mark_devices_valid() that will be called from layoutget.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
If the pNFS/flexfiles file is mirrored, and a read to one mirror fails,
then we should bump the mirror index, so that we retry to a different
mirror. Once we've iterated through all mirrors and all failed, we can
return the layout and issue a new LAYOUTGET.

Blocklayout uses file offset for the read-back page's offset of first writing,
it's definitely wrong, it writes data to bad address of page that cause userspace
application segment fault. It must be the page base stored in header->args.pgbase.
Also, the pg_offset has no influence with isect and extent length.
Note: The offset of the non-first page is always zero.
Ps: A test program will segment fault at read() as,

When the client goes to return a delegation, it should always update any
nfs4_state currently set up to use that delegation stateid to instead
use the open stateid. It already does do this in some cases,
particularly in the state recovery code, but not currently when the
delegation is voluntarily returned (e.g. in advance of a RENAME). This
causes the client to try to continue using the delegation stateid after
the DELEGRETURN, e.g. in LAYOUTGET.
Set the nfs4_state back to using the open stateid in
nfs4_open_delegation_recall, just before clearing the
NFS_DELEGATED_STATE bit.

Currently, we don't test if the state owner is in use before we try to
recover it. The problem is that if the refcount is zero, then the
state owner will be waiting on the lru list for garbage collection.
The expectation in that case is that if you bump the refcount, then
you must also remove the state owner from the lru list. Otherwise
the call to nfs4_put_state_owner will corrupt that list by trying
to add our state owner a second time.
Avoid the whole problem by just skipping state owners that hold no
state.

Currently, we are crediting all the calls to nfs_writepages_callback()
(i.e. the nfs_writepages() callback) to nfs_writepage(). Aside from
being inconsistent with the behaviour of the equivalent readpage/readpages
accounting, this also means that we cannot distinguish between bulk writes
and single page writebacks (which confuses the 'nfsiostat -p' tool).

When a read delegation is being recalled, and we're reclaiming the
cached opens, we need to make sure that we only reclaim read-only
modes.
A previous attempt to do this, relied on retrieving the delegation
type from the nfs4_opendata structure. Unfortunately, as Kinglong
pointed out, this field can only be set when performing reboot recovery.
Furthermore, if we call nfs4_open_recover(), then we end up clobbering
the state->flags for all modes that we're not recovering...
The fix is to have the delegation recall code pass this information
to the recovery call, and then refactor the recovery code so that
nfs4_open_delegation_recall() does not need to call nfs4_open_recover().

A test case is as the description says:
open(foobar, O_WRONLY);
sleep() --> reboot the server
close(foobar)
The bug is because in nfs4state.c in nfs4_reclaim_open_state() a few
line before going to restart, there is
clear_bit(NFS4CLNT_RECLAIM_NOGRACE, &state->flags).
NFS4CLNT_RECLAIM_NOGRACE is a flag for the client states not open
owner states. Value of NFS4CLNT_RECLAIM_NOGRACE is 4 which is the
value of NFS_O_WRONLY_STATE in nfs4_state->flags. So clearing it wipes
out state and when we go to close it, “call_close” doesn’t get set as
state flag is not set and CLOSE doesn’t go on the wire.

much data it cache after the file is closed. In return, the server
guarantees enough free space to avoid ENOSPC situations, etc.

close. Unfortunately, this causes problems with servers that set the
limit to 0 and therefore do not offer any ENOSPC guarantees.

This commit causes a NFSv4 regression in that close()+unlink() can end

CLOSE has completed on the server, meaning that the subsequent call to
REMOVE may fail with NFS4ERR_FILE_OPEN if the server implements Windows
unlink() semantics.

The helper pnfs_roc() has already verified that we have no delegations,
and no further open files, hence no outstanding I/O and it has marked
all the return-on-close lsegs as being invalid.
Furthermore, it sets the NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN bit, thus serialising the
close/delegreturn with all future layoutget calls on this inode.
The checks in pnfs_roc_drain() for valid layout segments are therefore
redundant: those cannot exist until another layoutget completes.
The other check for whether or not NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN is set, actually
causes a hang, since we already know that we hold that flag.
To fix, we therefore strip out all the functionality in pnfs_roc_drain()
except the retrieval of the barrier state, and then rename the function
accordingly.

Chuck reports seeing cases where a GETATTR that happens to race
with an asynchronous WRITE is overriding the file size, despite
the attribute barrier being set by the writeback code.
The culprit turns out to be the check in nfs_ctime_need_update(),
which sees that the ctime is newer than the cached ctime, and
assumes that it is safe to override the attribute barrier.
This patch removes that override, and ensures that attribute
barriers are always respected.

It is unusual to combine the open flags O_RDONLY and O_EXCL, but
it appears that libre-office does just that.
[pid 3250] stat("/home/USER/.config", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0700, st_size=8192, ...}) = 0
[pid 3250] open("/home/USER/.config/libreoffice/4-suse/user/extensions/buildid", O_RDONLY|O_EXCL <unfinished ...>
NFSv4 takes O_EXCL as a sign that a setattr command should be sent,
probably to reset the timestamps.
When it was an O_RDONLY open, the SETATTR command does not
identify any actual attributes to change.
If no delegation was provided to the open, the SETATTR uses the
all-zeros stateid and the request is accepted (at least by the
Linux NFS server - no harm, no foul).
If a read-delegation was provided, this is used in the SETATTR
request, and a Netapp filer will justifiably claim
NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID, which the Linux client takes as a sign
to retry - indefinitely.
So only treat O_EXCL specially if O_CREAT was also given.

Repair how rpcrdma_marshal_req() chooses which RDMA message type
to use for large non-WRITE operations so that it picks RDMA_NOMSG
in the correct situations, and sets up the marshaling logic to
SEND only the RPC/RDMA header.
Large NFSv2 SYMLINK requests now use RDMA_NOMSG calls. The Linux NFS
server XDR decoder for NFSv2 SYMLINK does not handle having the
pathname argument arrive in a separate buffer. The decoder could be
fixed, but this is simpler and RDMA_NOMSG can be used in a variety
of other situations.
Ensure that the Linux client continues to use "RDMA_MSG + read
list" when sending large NFSv3 SYMLINK requests, which is more
efficient than using RDMA_NOMSG.
Large NFSv4 CREATE(NF4LNK) requests are changed to use "RDMA_MSG +
read list" just like NFSv3 (see Section 5 of RFC 5667). Before,
these did not work at all.

Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO:
(1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag
(2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback
The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible
error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent
when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent
bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms
available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors
and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of
them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds
of error returns.
So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct
bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up.

pNFS writes don't return attributes, however that doesn't mean that we
should ignore the fact that they may be extending the file. This patch
ensures that if a write is seen to extend the file, then we always set
an attribute barrier, and update the cached file size.

Otherwise, nfs4_select_rw_stateid() will always return the zero stateid

Now that we have file locking helpers that can deal with an inode
instead of a filp, we can change the NFSv4 locking code to use that
instead.
This should fix the case where we have a filp that is closed while flock
or OFD locks are set on it, and the task is signaled so that it doesn't
wait for the LOCKU reply to come in before the filp is freed. At that
point we can end up with a use-after-free with the current code, which
relies on dereferencing the fl_file in the lock request.

This reverts commit db2efec0ca.
William reported that he was seeing instability with this patch, which
is likely due to the fact that it can cause the kernel to take a new
reference to a filp after the last reference has already been put.
Revert this patch for now, as we'll need to fix this in another way.

If a process reopens the file before we can send off the CLOSE/DELEGRETURN,
then pnfs_roc_drain() may end up waiting for a new set of layout segments
that are marked as return-on-close, but haven't yet been returned.
Fix this by only waiting for those layout segments that were invalidated in
pnfs_roc().

If one or more of the layout segments reports an error during I/O, then
we may have to send a layoutreturn to report the error back to the NFS
metadata server.
This patch ensures that the return-on-close code can detect the
outstanding layoutreturn, and not preempt it.

RFC5661 states:
The server has encountered an unrecoverable fault with the
backchannel (e.g., it has lost track of the sequence ID for a slot
in the backchannel). The client MUST stop sending more requests
on the session's fore channel, wait for all outstanding requests
to complete on the fore and back channel, and then destroy the
session.

Try to handle this for now by invalidating all outstanding layouts for this
server and then testing all the open+lock+delegation stateids.
At some later stage, we may want to optimise by separating out the testing of
delegation stateids only, and adding testing of layout stateids.

If the server tells us that only some state has been revoked, then we
need to run the full TEST_STATEID dog and pony show in order to discover

It is possible to have an active open with one mode, and a delegation
for the same file with a different mode.
In particular, a WR_ONLY open and an RD_ONLY delegation.
This happens if a WR_ONLY open is followed by a RD_ONLY open which
provides a delegation, but is then close.
When returning the delegation, we currently try to claim opens for
every open type (n_rdwr, n_rdonly, n_wronly). As there is no harm
in claiming an open for a mode that we already have, this is often
simplest.
However if the delegation only provides a subset of the modes that we
currently have open, this will produce an error from the server.
So when claiming open modes prior to returning a delegation, skip the
open request if the mode is not covered by the delegation - the open_stateid
must already cover that mode, so there is nothing to do.

Commit 9597c13b forbade opens with O_APPEND|O_DIRECT for NFSv4:
nfs: verify open flags before allowing an atomic open
Currently, you can open a NFSv4 file with O_APPEND|O_DIRECT, but cannot
fcntl(F_SETFL,...) with those flags. This flag combination is explicitly
forbidden on NFSv3 opens, and it seems like it should also be on NFSv4.
However, you can still open a file with O_DIRECT|O_APPEND if there exists a
cached dentry for the file because nfs4_file_open() is used instead of
nfs_atomic_open() and the check is bypassed. Add the check in
nfs4_file_open() as well.

The upshot is that we can end up sending DS writes with MDS credentials

If we have two tasks racing to update a mirror's credentials, then they
can end up leaking one (or more) sets of credentials. The first task
will set mirror->cred and then the second task will just overwrite it.
Use a cmpxchg to ensure that the creds are only set once. If we get to
the point where we would set mirror->cred and find that they're already
set, then we just release the creds that were just found.

If a write attempt fails, and the write is queued up for resending to
the server, as opposed to being dropped, then we need to set the
appropriate flag so that nfs_file_fsync() does the right thing.

pnfs_do_write() expects the call to pnfs_write_through_mds() to free the
pgio header and to release the layout segment before exiting. The problem
is that nfs_pgio_data_destroy() doesn't actually do this; it only frees
the memory allocated by nfs_generic_pgio().
Ditto for pnfs_do_read()...
Fix in both cases is to add a call to hdr->release(hdr).

Change the uniform client string generator to dynamically allocate the
NFSv4 client name string buffer. With this patch, we can eliminate the
buffers that are embedded within the "args" structs and simply use the
name string that is hanging off the client.
This uniform string case is a little simpler than the nonuniform since
we don't need to deal with RCU, but we do have two different cases,
depending on whether there is a uniquifier or not.

The way the *_client_string functions work is a little goofy. They build
the string in an on-stack buffer and then use kstrdup to copy it. This
is not only stack-heavy but artificially limits the size of the client
name string. Change it so that we determine the length of the string,
allocate it and then scnprintf into it.
Since the contents of the nonuniform string depend on rcu-managed data
structures, it's possible that they'll change between when we allocate
the string and when we go to fill it. If that happens, free the string,
recalculate the length and try again. If it the mismatch isn't resolved
on the second try then just give up and return -EINVAL.

The spec allows for up to NFS4_OPAQUE_LIMIT (1k). While we'll almost

...instead of buffers that are part of their arg structs. We already
hold a reference to the client, so we might as well use the allocated
buffer. In the event that we can't allocate the clp->cl_owner_id, then
just return -ENOMEM.
Note too that we switch from a GFP_KERNEL allocation here to GFP_NOFS.
It's possible we could end up trying to do a SETCLIENTID or EXCHANGE_ID
in order to reclaim some memory, and the GFP_KERNEL allocations in the
existing code could cause recursion back into NFS reclaim.

Jerome reported seeing a warning pop when working with a swapfile on
NFS. The nfs_swap_activate can end up calling sk_set_memalloc while
holding the rcu_read_lock and that function can sleep.
To fix that, we need to take a reference to the xprt while holding the
rcu_read_lock, set the socket up for swapping and then drop that
reference. But, xprt_put is not exported and having NFS deal with the
underlying xprt is a bit of layering violation anyway.
Fix this by adding a set of activate/deactivate functions that take a
rpc_clnt pointer instead of an rpc_xprt, and have nfs_swap_activate and
nfs_swap_deactivate call those.
Also, add a per-rpc_clnt atomic counter to keep track of the number of
active swapfiles associated with it. When the counter does a 0->1
transition, we enable swapping on the xprt, when we do a 1->0 transition
we disable swapping on it.
This also allows us to be a bit more selective with the RPC_TASK_SWAPPER
flag. If non-swapper and swapper clnts are sharing a xprt, then we only
need to flag the tasks from the swapper clnt with that flag.

With the planned cgroup writeback support, backing-dev related
declarations will be more widely used across block and cgroup;
unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h
makes cyclic include dependency quite likely.
This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the
essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files
which need access to more backing-dev details now include
backing-dev.h directly. This takes backing-dev.h off the common
include dependency chain making it a lot easier to use it across block
and cgroup.

Currently, a bdi (backing_dev_info) embeds single wb (bdi_writeback)
and the role of the separation is unclear. For cgroup support for
writeback IOs, a bdi will be updated to host multiple wb's where each
wb serves writeback IOs of a different cgroup on the bdi. To achieve
that, a wb should carry all states necessary for servicing writeback
IOs for a cgroup independently.
This patch moves bdi->bdi_stat[] into wb.
* enum bdi_stat_item is renamed to wb_stat_item and the prefix of all
enums is changed from BDI_ to WB_.
* BDI_STAT_BATCH() -> WB_STAT_BATCH()
* [__]{add|inc|dec|sum}_wb_stat(bdi, ...) -> [__]{add|inc}_wb_stat(wb, ...)
* bdi_stat[_error]() -> wb_stat[_error]()
* bdi_writeout_inc() -> wb_writeout_inc()
* stat init is moved to bdi_wb_init() and bdi_wb_exit() is added and
frees stat.
* As there's still only one bdi_writeback per backing_dev_info, all
uses of bdi->stat[] are mechanically replaced with bdi->wb.stat[]
introducing no behavior changes.

In glibc 2.21 (and several previous), a call to opendir() will
result in a 32K (BUFSIZ*4) buffer being allocated and passed to
getdents.
However a call to fdopendir() results in an 'fstat' request to
determine block size and a matching buffer allocated for subsequent
use with getdents. This will typically be 1M.
The first getdents call on an NFS directory will always use
READDIR_PLUS (or NFSv4 equivalent) if available. Subsequent getdents
calls only use this more expensive version if some 'stat' requests are
made between the getdents calls.
For this reason it is good to keep at least that first getdents call
relatively short. When fdopendir() and readdir() is used on a large
directory, it takes approximately 32 times as long to complete as
using "opendir". Current versions of 'find' use fdopendir() and
demonstrate this slowness.
'stat' on a directory currently returns the 'wsize'. This number has
no meaning on directories.
Actual READDIR requests are limited to ->dtsize, which itself is
capped at 4 pages, coincidently the same as BUFSIZ*4.
So this is a meaningful number to use as the blocksize on directories,
and has the effect of making 'find' on large directories go a lot
faster.

While the NFSv4.1 code has always drained the slot tables in order to stop
non-recovery related RPC calls when doing lease recovery, the NFSv4 code
did not.
The reason for the difference in behaviour is that NFSv4 does not have
session state, and so RPC calls can in theory proceed while recovery is
happening. In practice, however, anything I/O or state related needs to
wait until recovery is over.
This patch changes the behaviour of NFSv4 to match that of NFSv4.1 so that
we can simplify the state recovery code by assuming that we do not have to
deal with races between recovery and ordinary I/O.

Problem: When an operation like WRITE receives a BAD_STATEID, even though
recovery code clears the RECLAIM_NOGRACE recovery flag before recovering
the open state, because of clearing delegation state for the associated
inode, nfs_inode_find_state_and_recover() gets called and it makes the
same state with RECLAIM_NOGRACE flag again. As a results, when we restart
looking over the open states, we end up in the infinite loop instead of
breaking out in the next test of state flags.
Solution: unset the RECLAIM_NOGRACE set because of
calling of nfs_inode_find_state_and_recover() after returning from calling
recover_open() function.

Jean says:
"Running locktests with a large number of iterations resulted in a
client crash. The test run took a while and hasn't finished after close
to 2 hours. The crash happened right after I gave up and killed the test
(after 107m) with Ctrl+C."
The crash happened because a NULL inode pointer got passed into
locks_get_lock_context. The call chain indicates that file_inode(filp)
returned NULL, which means that f_inode was NULL. Since that's zeroed
out in __fput, that suggests that this filp pointer outlived the last
reference.
Looking at the code, that seems possible. We copy the struct file_lock
that's passed in, but if the task is signalled at an inopportune time we
can end up trying to use that file_lock in rpciod context after the process
that requested it has already returned (and possibly put its filp
reference).
Fix this by taking an extra reference to the filp when we allocate the
lock info, and put it in nfs4_lock_release.

When running the Connectathon basic tests against a Solaris NFS
server over NFSv4.0, test5 reports that stat(2) returns a file size
of zero instead of 1MB.
On success, nfs_commit_inode() can return a positive result; see
other call sites such as nfs_file_fsync_commit() and
nfs_commit_unstable_pages().
The call site recently added in nfs_wb_all() does not prevent that
positive return value from leaking to its callers. If it leaks
through nfs_sync_inode() back to nfs_getattr(), that causes stat(2)
to return a positive return value to user space while also not
filling in the passed-in struct stat.
Additional clean up: the new logic in nfs_wb_all() is rewritten in

an opaque pointer later passed to ->put_link(), ->follow_link() _stores_
that opaque pointer (into void * passed by address by caller) and returns
the symlink body. Returning ERR_PTR() on error, NULL on jump (procfs magic

Storing NULL for opaque pointer (or not storing it at all) means no call
of ->put_link().

do_blockdev_direct_IO() increments and decrements the inode
->i_dio_count for each IO operation. It does this to protect against
truncate of a file. Block devices don't need this sort of protection.
For a capable multiqueue setup, this atomic int is the only shared
state between applications accessing the device for O_DIRECT, and it
presents a scaling wall for that. In my testing, as much as 30% of
system time is spent incrementing and decrementing this value. A mixed
read/write workload improved from ~2.5M IOPS to ~9.6M IOPS, with
better latencies too. Before:

The more applications accessing the device, the worse it gets.
Add a new direct-io flags, DIO_SKIP_DIO_COUNT, which tells

This reverts commit 5a254d08b0.
Since commit 5a254d08b0 ("nfs: replace nfs_add_stats with
nfs_inc_stats when add one"), nfs_readpage and nfs_do_writepage use
nfs_inc_stats to increment NFSIOS_READPAGES and NFSIOS_WRITEPAGES
instead of nfs_add_stats.
However nfs_inc_stats does not do the same thing as nfs_add_stats with
value 1 because these functions work on distinct stats:
nfs_inc_stats increments stats from "enum nfs_stat_eventcounters" (in
server->io_stats->events) and nfs_add_stats those from "enum
nfs_stat_bytecounters" (in server->io_stats->bytes).

2ef47eb1 (NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()) was a good
start to fixing a circular directory structure warning for NFS v4
"junctioned" mountpoints. Unfortunately, further testing continued to
generate this error.
My server is configured like this:
anna@nfsd ~ % df
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/vda1 9.1G 2.0G 6.5G 24% /
/dev/vdc1 1014M 33M 982M 4% /exports

/exports/vol1/ *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
/exports/vol1/vol2 *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
I've been running chown across the entire mountpoint twice in a row to
hit this problem. The first run succeeds, but the second one fails with
the circular directory warning along with:
anna@client ~ % dmesg
[Apr 3 14:28] NFS: server 192.168.100.204 error: fileid changed

WHere 0x80 is the mountpoint's fileid and 0x100080 is the mounted-on
fileid.
This patch fixes the issue by requesting an updated mounted-on fileid
from the server during nfs_update_inode(), and then checking that the
fileid stored in the nfs_inode matches either the fileid or mounted-on
fileid returned by the server.

Chuck pointed out a problem that crept in with commit 6ffa30d3f7 (nfs:
don't call blocking operations while !TASK_RUNNING). Linux counts tasks
in uninterruptible sleep against the load average, so this caused the
system's load average to be pinned at at least 1 when there was a
NFSv4.1+ mount active.
Not a huge problem, but it's probably worth fixing before we get too
many complaints about it. This patch converts the code back to use
TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE sleep, simply has it flush any signals on each loop
iteration. In practice no one should really be signalling this thread at
all, so I think this is reasonably safe.
With this change, there's also no need to game the hung task watchdog so
we can also convert the schedule_timeout call back to a normal schedule.

There are a lot of embedded systems that run most or all of their
functionality in init, running as root:root. For these systems,
supporting multiple users is not necessary.
This patch adds a new symbol, CONFIG_MULTIUSER, that makes support for
non-root users, non-root groups, and capabilities optional. It is enabled
under CONFIG_EXPERT menu.
When this symbol is not defined, UID and GID are zero in any possible case
and processes always have all capabilities.
The following syscalls are compiled out: setuid, setregid, setgid,
setreuid, setresuid, getresuid, setresgid, getresgid, setgroups,
getgroups, setfsuid, setfsgid, capget, capset.
Also, groups.c is compiled out completely.
In kernel/capability.c, capable function was moved in order to avoid
adding two ifdef blocks.
This change saves about 25 KB on a defconfig build. The most minimal
kernels have total text sizes in the high hundreds of kB rather than
low MB. (The 25k goes down a bit with allnoconfig, but not that much.
The kernel was booted in Qemu. All the common functionalities work.
Adding users/groups is not possible, failing with -ENOSYS.

This patch replaces cancel_dirty_page() with a helper function
account_page_cleaned() which only updates counters. It's called from
truncate_complete_page() and from try_to_free_buffers() (hack for ext3).
Page is locked in both cases, page-lock protects against concurrent
dirtiers: see commit 2d6d7f9828 ("mm: protect set_page_dirty() from
ongoing truncation").
Delete_from_page_cache() shouldn't be called for dirty pages, they must
be handled by caller (either written or truncated). This patch treats
final dirty accounting fixup at the end of __delete_from_page_cache() as
a debug check and adds WARN_ON_ONCE() around it. If something removes
dirty pages without proper handling that might be a bug and unwritten
data might be lost.
Hugetlbfs has no dirty pages accounting, ClearPageDirty() is enough
here.
cancel_dirty_page() in nfs_wb_page_cancel() is redundant. This is
helper for nfs_invalidate_page() and it's called only in case complete
invalidation.
The mess was started in v2.6.20 after commits 46d2277c79 ("Clean up
and make try_to_free_buffers() not race with dirty pages") and
3e67c0987d ("truncate: clear page dirtiness before running
try_to_free_buffers()") first was reverted right in v2.6.20 in commit
ecdfc9787f ("Resurrect 'try_to_free_buffers()' VM hackery"), second in
v2.6.25 commit a2b345642f ("Fix dirty page accounting leak with ext3
data=journal").
Custom fixes were introduced between these points. NFS in v2.6.23, commit
1b3b4a1a2d ("NFS: Fix a write request leak in nfs_invalidate_page()").
Kludge in __delete_from_page_cache() in v2.6.24, commit 3a6927906f ("Do
dirty page accounting when removing a page from the page cache"). Since
v2.6.25 all of them are redundant.

The LAYOUTCOMMIT operation means different things to different layout types.
For blocks and objects, it is both a data and metadata consistency operation.
For files and flexfiles, it is only a metadata consistency operation.
This patch separates out the 2 cases, allowing the files/flexfiles layout
drivers to optimise away the data consistency calls to layoutcommit.

Most callers in the kernel want to perform synchronous file I/O, but
still have to bloat the stack with a full struct kiocb. Split out
the parts needed in filesystem code from those in the aio code, and
only allocate those needed to pass down argument on the stack. The
aio code embedds the generic iocb in the one it allocates and can
easily get back to it by using container_of.
Also add a ->ki_complete method to struct kiocb, this is used to call
into the aio code and thus removes the dependency on aio for filesystems
impementing asynchronous operations. It will also allow other callers
to substitute their own completion callback.
We also add a new ->ki_flags field to work around the nasty layering
violation recently introduced in commit 5e33f6 ("usb: gadget: ffs: add
eventfd notification about ffs events").

nfs_vm_page_mkwrite() should wait until the page cache invalidation
is finished. This is the second patch in a 2 patch series to deprecate
the NFS client's reliance on nfs_release_page() in the context of
nfs_invalidate_mapping().
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
When invalidating the page cache for a regular file, we want to first
sync all dirty data to disk and then call invalidate_inode_pages2().
The latter relies on nfs_launder_page() and nfs_release_page() to deal
respectively with dirty pages, and unstable written pages.
When commit 9590544694 ("NFS: avoid deadlocks with loop-back mounted
NFS filesystems.") changed the behaviour of nfs_release_page(), then it
made it possible for invalidate_inode_pages2() to fail with an EBUSY.
Unfortunately, that error is then propagated back to read().
Let's therefore work around the problem for now by protecting the call
to sync the data and invalidate_inode_pages2() so that they are atomic
w.r.t. the addition of new writes.
Later on, we can revisit whether or not we still need nfs_launder_page()
and nfs_release_page().

If the server does not return a valid set of attributes that we can
use to either create a file or refresh the inode, then there is no
value in calling nfs_prime_dcache().
However if we're just refreshing the inode using the attributes that
the server returned, then it shouldn't matter whether or not we have
a filehandle, as long as we check the fsid+fileid combination.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
When we call readdirplus, set the fileid normally returned by readdir
as the mounted-on-fileid, since that is commonly the case if there is
a mountpoint. To ensure that we get it right, we only set the flag if
the readdir fileid differs from the one returned in the readdirplus
attributes.
This again means that we can avoid the issues described in commit
2ef47eb1ae ("NFS: Fix use of nfs_attr_use_mounted_on_fileid()"),
which only fixed NFSv4.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@primarydata.com>
If we're traversing a directory which contains a submounted filesystem,
or one that has a referral, the NFS server that is processing the READDIR
request will often return information for the underlying (mounted-on)
directory. It may, or may not, also return filehandle information.
If this happens, and the lookup in nfs_prime_dcache() returns the
dentry for the submounted directory, the filehandle comparison will
fail, and we call d_invalidate(). Post-commit 8ed936b567
("vfs: Lazily remove mounts on unlinked files and directories."), this
means the entire subtree is unmounted.
The following minimal patch addresses this problem by punting on
the invalidation if there is a submount.
