e6f6d63ed1 drm/msm: add headless gpu device for imx5
This patch allows using drm/msm without qcom display hardware. It adds a
amd,imageon compatible, which is used instead of qcom,adreno, but does
not require a top level msm node.

d1d9d0e172 drm/msm: Only add available components
When trying to get the display up on my sdm845 board I noticed that
the display wouldn't probe if I had the dsi1 node marked as "disabled"
even though my board doesn't use dsi1.  It looks like the msm code
adds all nodes to its list of components even if they are disabled.  I
believe this doesn't work because all registered components need to
come up before we finish probing.  Let's do like other DRM code and
only add available components.

50bcc689b1 drm/msm: dpu: Make legacy cursor updates asynchronous
This patch sprinkles a few async/legacy_cursor_update checks
through commit to ensure that cursor updates aren't blocked on vsync.
There are 2 main components to this, the first is that we don't want to
wait_for_commit_done in msm_atomic  before returning from atomic_complete.
The second is that in dpu we don't want to wait for frame_done events when
updating the cursor.

5f79e03b1f drm/msm: dpu: Only check flush register against pending flushes
There exists a case where a flush of a plane/dma may have been triggered
& started from an async commit. If that plane/dma is subsequently disabled
by the next commit, the flush register will continue to hold the flush
bit for the disabled plane. Since the bit remains active,
pending_kickoff_cnt will never decrement and we'll miss frame_done
events.

This patch limits the check of flush_register to include only those bits
which have been updated with the latest commit.

d4e98855d1 drm/msm/dpu: Correct dpu destroy and disable order
In case of msm drm bind failure, dpu_mdss_destroy is triggered.
In this function, resources are freed and pm runtime disable is
called, which triggers dpu_mdss_disable. Now in dpu_mdss_disable,
driver tries to access a memory which is already freed. This
results in kernel panic. Fix this by ensuring proper sequence
of dpu destroy and disable calls.

7a93d5c38e drm/msm/gpu: add submit flag to hint which buffers should be dumped
To lower CPU  overhead, future userspace will be switching to pinning
iova and avoiding the use of relocs, and only include cmds table entries
for IB1 level cmdstream (but not IB2 or state-groups).

This leaves the kernel unsure what to dump for rd/hangrd cmdstream
dumping.  So add a MSM_SUBMIT_BO_DUMP flag so userspace can indicate
buffers that contain cmdstream (or are otherwise important to dump).

1df4289d5b drm/msm: Optimize adreno_show_object()
When the userspace tries to read the crashstate dump, the read side
implementation in the driver currently ascii85 encodes all the binary
buffers and it does this each time the read system call is called.
A userspace tool like cat typically does a page by page read and the
number of read calls depends on the size of the data captured by the
driver. This is certainly not desirable and does not scale well with
large captures.

This patch encodes the buffer only once in the read path. With this there
is an immediate >10X speed improvement in crashstate save time.

84c6127580 drm/msm/gpu: Map the ringbuffer in the iova at create time
For reasons that I'm sure made perfect sense at the time we were
opting to defer the iova alloc / pin on the ringbuffer until HW
init time so when we moved to iova reference counting we ended
up adding a reference count every time the hardware started.
Not that it mattered (because the ring is always around) but
it did make the debug output look odd. Allocate and pin the iova
at create time instead.

For debugging purposes it is useful to assign descriptions
to buffers so that we know what they are used for. Add
a field to the buffer object and use that to name the various
kernel side allocations which ends up looking like like this
in /d/dri/X/gem:

7ad0e8cf63 drm/msm: Count how many times iova memory is pinned
Add a reference count to track how many times a particular
chunk of iova memory is pinned (mapped) in the iomu and
add msm_gem_unpin_iova to give up references.

It is important to note that msm_gem_unpin_iova replaces
msm_gem_put_iova because the new implicit behavior
that an assigned iova in a given vma is now valid for the
life of the buffer and what we are really focusing on is
the use of that iova.

For now the unmappings are lazy; once the reference counts
go to zero they *COULD* be unmapped dynamically but that
will require an outside force such as a shrinker or
mm_notifiers.  For now, we're just focusing on getting
the counting right and setting ourselves up to be ready
for the future.

9fe041f6fd drm/msm: Add msm_gem_get_and_pin_iova()
Add a new function to get and pin the iova memory in one
step (basically renaming the old msm_gem_get_iova function)
and switch msm_gem_get_iova() to only allocate an iova but
not map it in the IOMMU. This is only currently used by
msm_ioctl_gem_info() since all other users of of the iova
expect that the memory be immediately available.

d6852b4b2d drm/msm/a6xx: Track and manage a6xx state memory
The a6xx GPU state allocates a LOT of memory. Add a bit of
infrastructure to track the memory allocations in the GPU structure
and delete them when the state is destroyed much the same way
that devm works with the device model as a whole.  This protects
against the developer accidentally forgetting to add a kfree() to
an ever growing list.

896a248a90 drm/msm/gpu: Only store local command buffers in the GPU state
Instead of trying to store all the tagged buffers from a hanging
submit only store the command buffers that were not imported.
This cuts down on the amount of data stored in the GPU state to
the base minimum of useful information.

The downside is that this will make it more difficult to
successfully replay a hang with just the GPU state but there
isn't any reason why that functionality can't be added back
in later once we've figured out how to better communicate
such massive amounts of data.

4241db42e4 drm/msm/gpu: Add trace events for tracking GPU submissions
Add trace events to track the progress of a GPU submission
msm_gpu_submit occurs at the beginning of the submissions,
msm_gpu_submit_flush happens when the submission is put on
the ringbuffer and msm_submit_flush_retired is sent when
the operation is retired.

To make it easier to track the operations a unique sequence
number is assigned to each submission and displayed in each
event output so a human or a script can easily associate
the events related to a specific submission.

568692102b drm/msm/gpu: Add per-submission statistics
Add infrastructure to track statistics for GPU submissions
by sampling certain perfcounters before and after a submission.

To store the statistics, the per-ring memptrs region is
expanded to include room for up to 64 entries - this should
cover a reasonable amount of inflight submissions without
worrying about losing data. The target specific code inserts
PM4 commands to sample the counters before and after
submission and store them in the data region. The CPU can
access the data after the submission retires to make sense
of the statistics and communicate them to the user.

Allocate the correct buffer size for the GPU memptrs. The incorrect
size hasn't affected us thus far since the incorrect size was larger
than the intended size and we're still stuck on page sized
granularity anyway but technically correct is the best kind of
correct.

7a007a121d drm/msm/dpu: Remove suspend state tracking from crtc
Since drm core's modeset locks serialize atomic commits, we don't need to
track whether or not we're in a suspended state from inside the crtc for
dpu_crtc_enable/disable. This patch removes the suspend logic from the crtc and

Removes the traces of the non-atomic helper calls in
msm_pm_suspend/resume since we just deleted those functions (see patch

PM resume was crashing during dpu_kms_pm_resume. This patch removes
dpu_kms_pm_suspend/resume so that msm_pm_suspend/resume uses the atomic

ee44563596 drm/msm/hdmi: Enable HPD after HDMI IRQ is set up
SoCs that contain MDP5 have a top level wrapper called MDSS that
manages locks, power and irq for the sub-blocks within it.

Irq for HDMI is also routed through the MDSS.

Shortly after the Hot Plug Detection (HPD) is enabled in HDMI,
HDMI interrupts are recieved by the MDSS interrupt handler.
However at this moment the HDMI irq is still not mapped to
the MDSS irq domain so the HDMI irq handler cannot be called
to process the interrupts.

This leads to a flood of HDMI interrupts on CPU 0.

If we are lucky to have the HDMI initialization running on a
different CPU, it will eventually map the HDMI irq to MDSS irq
domain, the next HDMI interrupt will be handled by the HDMI irq
handler, the interrupt flood will stop and we will recover.

If the HDMI initialization is running on CPU 0, then it cannot
complete and there is nothing to stop the interrupt flood on
CPU 0. The system is stuck.

Fix this by moving the HPD enablement after the HDMI irq is
mapped to the MDSS irq domain.

482f96324a drm/msm: Fix task dump in gpu recovery
The current recovery code gets a pointer to the task struct and does a
few things all within the rcu_read_lock. This puts constraints on the
types of gfp flags that can be used within the rcu lock. This patch
instead gets a reference to the task within the rcu lock and releases
the lock immediately, this way the task stays afloat until we need it and
we also get to use the desired gfp flags.

ed3cafa79e soc: qcom: cmd-db: Stop memcpy()ing in cmd_db_read_aux_data()
Let's change the function signature to return the pointer to memory or
an error pointer on failure, and take an argument that lets us return
the size of the aux data read. This way we can remove the
cmd_db_read_aux_data_len() API entirely and also get rid of the memcpy
operation from cmd_db to the caller. Updating the only user of this code
shows that making this change allows us to remove a function and put the
lookup where the user is.

f9a7082327 drm/msm: fix OF child-node lookup
Use the new of_get_compatible_child() helper to lookup the legacy
pwrlevels child node instead of using of_find_compatible_node(), which
searches the entire tree from a given start node and thus can return an
unrelated (i.e.  non-child) node.

This also addresses a potential use-after-free (e.g. after probe
deferral) as the tree-wide helper drops a reference to its first
argument (i.e. the probed device's node).

While at it, also fix the related child-node reference leak.

82e223a5d8 drm/msm: dpu: Fix memory leak caused by dropped reference
We are currently leaking a drm_crtc_commit struct for every atomic
commit containing plane state. The dpu plane destroy function cleans up
the fb reference manually, but fails to release the commit ref. As a
result, we just keep allocating drm_crtc_commits without ever freeing
them. Fortunately there's a helper function which will clean up all of
our mess at once, so use that.

Thanks to Doug Anderson for reporting the memory leak (and leaving
breadcrumbs from kmemleak!).

a2c3c0a54d drm/msm/a6xx: Add devfreq support for a6xx
Implement routines to estimate GPU busy time and fetching the
current frequency for the polling interval. This is required by
the devfreq framework which recommends a frequency change if needed.
The driver code then tries to set this new frequency on the GPU by
sending an Out Of Band(OOB) request to the GMU.

de0a3d094d drm/msm: re-factor devfreq code
The devfreq framework requires the drivers to provide busy time estimations.
The GPU driver relies on the hardware performance counteres for the busy time
estimations, but different hardware revisions have counters which can be
sourced from different clocks. So the busy time estimation will be target
dependent.  Additionally on targets where the clocks are completely controlled
by the on chip microcontroller, fetching and setting the current GPU frequency
will be different. This patch aims to embrace these differences by re-factoring
the devfreq code a bit.

d3fa91c909 drm/msm: suspend devfreq on init
Devfreq turns on and starts recommending power level as soon as it is
initialized. The GPU is still not powered on by the time the devfreq
init happens and this leads to problems on GPU's where register access
is needed to get/set power levels. So we start suspended and only restart
devfreq when GPU is powered on.

bdacdcf20b drm/msm/a6xx: Add inactive_period for a6xx
The target definition for a630 didn't set a reasonable
value for inactive_period so it defaulted to zero and
we were essentially powering down after every submission.
Set it back to the default value to keep the GPU from
bouncing too much during regular workloads.

df0dff1329 drm/msm/a6xx: Poll for HFI responses
The only HFI communication with the GMU on sdm845 happens
during initialization and all commands are synchronous. A fancy
interrupt tasklet and associated infrastructure is entirely
not eeded and puts us at the mercy of the scheduler.

Instead poll for the message signal and handle the response
immediately and go on our way.

The point of the 'force_dma' parameter for of_dma_configure
is to force the device to be set up even if DMA capability is
not described by the firmware which is exactly the use case
 we have for GMU - we need SMMU to get set up but we have no
other dma capabilities since memory is managed by the GPU
driver. Currently we pass false so of_dma_configure() fails
and subsequently GMU and GPU probe does as well.

f8fc924e08 drm/msm/a6xx: Fix PDC register overlap
The current design greedily takes a big chunk of the PDC
register space instead of just the GPU specific sections
which conflicts with other drivers and generally makes
a mess of things.

Furthermore we only need to map the GPU PDC sections
just once during init so map the memory inside the function
that uses it and adjust the pointers and register offsets
accordingly.

9027b8719b drm/msm: dpu: Don't reset dpu_enc->cur_master on .disable()
cur_master in dpu_encoder is assigned at modeset and cleared on
.disable(). Unfortunately dpms (or enable/disable) does not guarantee a
modeset, so cur_master is NULL when we try to re-enable it.

This patch moves the NULL assignment to setup_display where it will be
re-assigned later in the function.

can never return an error code. This removes the need for the
function as pm_runtime functions can be used instead.

2a7a92fc31 drm/msm: dpu: Consolidate atomic_check functions()
dpu_plane_atomic_check() is a very thin wrapper around
dpu_plane_sspp_atomic_check(). All it does is a NULL-check of state->fb,
which is already done by drm_atomic_helper_check_plane_state(). Further,
the helper sets state->visible = false when this is true. So remove
dpu_plane_atomic_check() and just use dpu_plane_sspp_atomic_check()
directly.

RM maintained a redundant definition for display topology
to identify the no. of hw blocks needed for a display
and their hardware dependencies. This information can be

Destination scaling(DS) is a Snapdragon hardware feature to
scale up the display ROI after layer blending. DPU driver doesn't
support programming of DS blocks yet. This change cleans up the

3f4db2e2cc drm/msm/dpu: iterate for assigned hw ctl in virtual encoder
In virtual encoder modeset, DPU makes RM request to assign hw blocks
for the display. It is also expected in modeset to iterate and
associate the physical encoders with their relevant hw blocks.
Ping pong blocks are already handled here but hw ctl blocks are not.
This change moves the hw_ctl iteration and mapping from physical
encoder to virtual encoder.

ad8e5c2d77 drm/msm/dpu: remove debugfs support for misr
MISR support is the debug feature present in Snapdragon chipsets.
At the layer mixer and interfaces, MISR algorithm can generate CRC
signatures of the pixel data which can be used for validating
the frames generated. Since there are no clients for this feature,
strip down the support from the driver.

d270bdf41e drm/msm/dpu: Remove dpu_mdss_isr when dpu_mdss_destroy is called
The MDSS device is created before the MSM driver attempts to bind the
sub components. If any of the components return -EPROBE_DEFER the MDSS
device is destroyed and tried again later.

If this happens the dpu_mdss_isr interrupt created from the DPU MDSS
is not freed when the MDSS device is destroyed and has a risk of
triggering later and hitting a fault by accessing a mmio region that
no longer exists. Even if the interrupt isn't triggered by
accident when the device attempts to reprobe it would error out
when it tries to re-register the interrupt so unconditionally removing
it in the destroy is the right move.

Switch the device managed dpu_mdss_isr to be unmanaged and add a
free_irq() in the mdss destroy function.

96fc56a775 drm/msm: dpu: Allow planes to extend past active display
The atomic_check is a bit too aggressive with respect to planes which
leave the active area. This caused a bunch of log spew when the cursor
got to the edge of the screen and stopped it from going all the way.

This patch removes the conservative bounds checks from atomic and clips
the dst rect such that we properly display planes which go off the
screen.

1e53ac9280 drm/msm/dpu: use encoder type to identify display type
With patch [1], DPU is broken since it continues to use
incorrect connector_type to identify the display type. Update
DPU to use the encoder type to get the info.

74593a28c2 drm/msm/dpu: fix for cursor blend issue
The current driver has the opaque blend mode set as the
default causing the black box effect around the cursor.
The fix enables choosing a different blend mode for alpha
enabled formats.

Looking at the code I see that drm_encoder_init() is called from the DPU
code with 'DRM_MODE_CONNECTOR_DSI' passed in as the 'encoder_type'
argument (follow from _dpu_kms_initialize_dsi()). That corresponds to
the integer 16. That is then indexed into drm_encoder_enum_list in
drm_encoder_init() to look up the name of the encoder. If you're still
following along, that's an encoder not a connector! We really want to
use DRM_MODE_ENCODER_DSI (integer 6) instead of DRM_MODE_CONNECTOR_DSI
here, or we'll go out of bounds of the encoder array. Pass the right
thing and everything is fine.
