106a4ee258 module: signature checking hook
We do a very simple search for a particular string appended to the module
(which is cache-hot and about to be SHA'd anyway). There's both a config
option and a boot parameter which control whether we accept or fail with
unsigned modules and modules that are signed with an unknown key.

If module signing is enabled, the kernel will be tainted if a module is
loaded that is unsigned or has a signature for which we don't have the
key.

(Useful feedback and tweaks by David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com>)

7e92daaefa Merge branch 'perf-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip
Pull perf update from Ingo Molnar:
"Lots of changes in this cycle as well, with hundreds of commits from
over 30 contributors. Most of the activity was on the tooling side.

  Higher level changes:

   - New 'perf kvm' analysis tool, from Xiao Guangrong.

   - New 'perf trace' system-wide tracing tool

   - uprobes fixes + cleanups from Oleg Nesterov.

   - Lots of patches to make perf build on Android out of box, from
     Irina Tirdea

   - Extend ftrace function tracing utility to be more dynamic for its
users. It allows for data passing to the callback functions, as
well as reading regs as if a breakpoint were to trigger at function
     entry.

The main goal of this patch series was to allow kprobes to use
ftrace as an optimized probe point when a probe is placed on an
ftrace nop. With lots of help from Masami Hiramatsu, and going
through lots of iterations, we finally came up with a good
     solution.

   - Add cpumask for uncore pmu, use it in 'stat', from Yan, Zheng.

   - Various tracing updates from Steve Rostedt

   - Clean up and improve 'perf sched' performance by elliminating lots
     of needless calls to libtraceevent.

   - Event group parsing support, from Jiri Olsa

   - UI/gtk refactorings and improvements from Namhyung Kim

   - Add support for non-tracepoint events in perf script python, from
     Feng Tang

   - Add --symbols to 'script', similar to the one in 'report', from
     Feng Tang.

  Infrastructure enhancements and fixes:

   - Convert the trace builtins to use the growing evsel/evlist
tracepoint infrastructure, removing several open coded constructs
like switch like series of strcmp to dispatch events, etc.
Basically what had already been showcased in 'perf sched'.

   - Add evsel constructor for tracepoints, that uses libtraceevent just
to parse the /format events file, use it in a new 'perf test' to
make sure the libtraceevent format parsing regressions can be more
     readily caught.

   - Some strange errors were happening in some builds, but not on the
next, reported by several people, problem was some parser related
files, generated during the build, didn't had proper make deps, fix
     from Eric Sandeen.

   - Introduce struct and cache information about the environment where
a perf.data file was captured, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Fix handling of unresolved samples when --symbols is used in
     'report', from Feng Tang.

   - Add union member access support to 'probe', from Hyeoncheol Lee.

   - Fixups to die() removal, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Render fixes for the TUI, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Don't enable annotation in non symbolic view, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Fix pipe mode in 'report', from Namhyung Kim.

   - Move related stats code from stat to util/, will be used by the
'stat' kvm tool, from Xiao Guangrong.

   - Remove die()/exit() calls from several tools.

   - Resolve vdso callchains, from Jiri Olsa

   - Don't pass const char pointers to basename, so that we can
unconditionally use libgen.h and thus avoid ifdef BIONIC lines,
     from David Ahern

   - Refactor hist formatting so that it can be reused with the GTK
     browser, From Namhyung Kim

   - Fix build for another rbtree.c change, from Adrian Hunter.

   - Make 'perf diff' command work with evsel hists, from Jiri Olsa.

   - Use the only field_sep var that is set up: symbol_conf.field_sep,
     fix from Jiri Olsa.

   - .gitignore compiled python binaries, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Get rid of die() in more libtraceevent places, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Rename libtraceevent 'private' struct member to 'priv' so that it
works in C++, from Steven Rostedt

   - Remove lots of exit()/die() calls from tools so that the main perf
exit routine can take place, from David Ahern

   - Fix x86 build on x86-64, from David Ahern.

   - {int,str,rb}list fixes from Suzuki K Poulose

   - perf.data header fixes from Namhyung Kim

   - Allow user to indicate objdump path, needed in cross environments,
     from Maciek Borzecki

   - Fix hardware cache event name generation, fix from Jiri Olsa

   - Add round trip test for sw, hw and cache event names, catching the
problem Jiri fixed, after Jiri's patch, the test passes
     successfully.

   - Clean target should do clean for lib/traceevent too, fix from David
     Ahern

   - Check the right variable for allocation failure, fix from Namhyung
     Kim

   - Set up evsel->tp_format regardless of evsel->name being set
     already, fix from Namhyung Kim

   - Oprofile fixes from Robert Richter.

   - Remove perf_event_attr needless version inflation, from Jiri Olsa

   - Introduce libtraceevent strerror like error reporting facility,
     from Namhyung Kim

   - Add pmu mappings to perf.data header and use event names from cmd
     line, from Robert Richter

   - Fix include order for bison/flex-generated C files, from Ben
     Hutchings

   - Build fixes and documentation corrections from David Ahern

   - Assorted cleanups from Robert Richter

   - Let O= makes handle relative paths, from Steven Rostedt

   - perf script python fixes, from Feng Tang.

   - Initial bash completion support, from Frederic Weisbecker

   - Allow building without libelf, from Namhyung Kim.

   - Support DWARF CFI based unwind to have callchains when %bp based
unwinding is not possible, from Jiri Olsa.

   - Symbol resolution fixes, while fixing support PPC64 files with an
.opt ELF section was the end goal, several fixes for code that
handles all architectures and cleanups are included, from Cody
     Schafer.

   - Assorted fixes for Documentation and build in 32 bit, from Robert
     Richter

   - Cache the libtraceevent event_format associated to each evsel
early, so that we avoid relookups, i.e. calling pevent_find_event
     repeatedly when processing tracepoint events.

[ This is to reduce the surface contact with libtraceevents and
make clear what is that the perf tools needs from that lib: so
far parsing the common and per event fields. ]

   - Don't stop the build if the audit libraries are not installed, fix
     from Namhyung Kim.

   - Fix bfd.h/libbfd detection with recent binutils, from Markus
     Trippelsdorf.

   - Improve warning message when libunwind devel packages not present,
     from Jiri Olsa"

ea632e9f12 trace: Stop compiling in trace_clock unconditionally
Commit 56449f437 "tracing: make the trace clocks available generally",
in April 2009, made trace_clock available unconditionally, since
CONFIG_X86_DS used it too.

Commit faa4602e47 "x86, perf, bts, mm: Delete the never used BTS-ptrace code",
in March 2010, removed CONFIG_X86_DS, and now only CONFIG_RING_BUFFER (split
out from CONFIG_TRACING for general use) has a dependency on trace_clock. So,
only compile in trace_clock with CONFIG_RING_BUFFER or CONFIG_TRACING
enabled.

3180d89b47 hotplug: Fix UP bug in smpboot hotplug code
Because kernel subsystems need their per-CPU kthreads on UP systems as
well as on SMP systems, the smpboot hotplug kthread functions must be
provided in UP builds as well as in SMP builds. This commit therefore
adds smpboot.c to UP builds and excludes irrelevant code via #ifdef.

Pull vfs changes from Al Viro.
"A lot of misc stuff. The obvious groups:

fb21affa49 Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal
Pull second pile of signal handling patches from Al Viro:
"This one is just task_work_add() series + remaining prereqs for it.

There probably will be another pull request from that tree this
cycle - at least for helpers, to get them out of the way for per-arch
  fixes remaining in the tree."

Fix trivial conflict in kernel/irq/manage.c: the merge of Andrew's pile
had brought in commit 97fd75b7b8 ("kernel/irq/manage.c: use the
pr_foo() infrastructure to prefix printks") which changed one of the
pr_err() calls that this merge moves around.

* 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal:

  keys: kill the dummy key_replace_session_keyring()

d97b46a646 syscalls, x86: add __NR_kcmp syscall
While doing the checkpoint-restore in the user space one need to determine
whether various kernel objects (like mm_struct-s of file_struct-s) are
shared between tasks and restore this state.

The 2nd step can be solved by using appropriate CLONE_ flags and the
unshare syscall, while there's currently no ways for solving the 1st one.

One of the ways for checking whether two tasks share e.g. mm_struct is to
provide some mm_struct ID of a task to its proc file, but showing such
info considered to be not that good for security reasons.

Thus after some debates we end up in conclusion that using that named
'comparison' syscall might be the best candidate. So here is it --
__NR_kcmp.

It takes up to 5 arguments - the pids of the two tasks (which
characteristics should be compared), the comparison type and (in case of
comparison of files) two file descriptors.

Lookups for pids are done in the caller's PID namespace only.

At moment only x86 is supported and tested.

eea62f831b brlocks/lglocks: turn into functions
lglocks and brlocks are currently generated with some complicated macros
in lglock.h. But there's no reason to not just use common utility
functions and put all the data into a common data structure.

Since there are at least two users it makes sense to share this code in a
library. This is also easier maintainable than a macro forest.

This will also make it later possible to dynamically allocate lglocks and
also use them in modules (this would both still need some additional, but
now straightforward, code)

e73f8959af task_work_add: generic process-context callbacks
Provide a simple mechanism that allows running code in the (nonatomic)
context of the arbitrary task.

The caller does task_work_add(task, task_work) and this task executes
task_work->func() either from do_notify_resume() or from do_exit(). The
callback can rely on PF_EXITING to detect the latter case.

"struct task_work" can be embedded in another struct, still it has "void
*data" to handle the most common/simple case.

This allows us to kill the ->replacement_session_keyring hack, and
potentially this can have more users.

Performance-wise, this adds 2 "unlikely(!hlist_empty())" checks into
tracehook_notify_resume() and do_exit(). But at the same time we can
remove the "replacement_session_keyring != NULL" checks from
arch/*/signal.c and exit_creds().

Note: task_work_add/task_work_run abuses ->pi_lock. This is only because
this lock is already used by lookup_pi_state() to synchronize with
do_exit() setting PF_EXITING. Fortunately the scope of this lock in
task_work.c is really tiny, and the code is unlikely anyway.

1f87f0b52b sysctl: Move the implementation into fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c
Move the core sysctl code from kernel/sysctl.c and kernel/sysctl_check.c
into fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c.

Currently sysctl maintenance is hampered by the sysctl implementation
being split across 3 files with artificial layering between them.
Consolidate the entire sysctl implementation into 1 file so that
it is easier to see what is going on and hopefully allowing for
simpler maintenance.

For functions that are now only used in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c remove
their declarations from sysctl.h and make them static in fs/proc/proc_sysctl.c

notifier chain that allows drivers for those peripherals to
be notified before and after they may be reset.

Notified drivers can include VFP co-processor, interrupt controller
and it's PM extensions, local CPU timers context save/restore which
shouldn't be interrupted. Hence CPU PM event APIs must be called
with interrupts disabled.

b77f0f3c1f jump label: Reduce the cycle count by changing the link order
In the course of testing jump labels for use with the CFS
bandwidth controller, Paul Turner, discovered that using jump
labels reduced the branch count and the instruction count, but
did not reduce the cycle count or wall time.

I noticed that having the jump_label.o included in the kernel
but not used in any way still caused this increase in cycle
count and wall time. Thus, I moved jump_label.o in the
kernel/Makefile, thus changing the link order, and presumably
moving it out of hot icache areas. This brought down the cycle
count/time as expected.

In addition to Paul's testing, I've tested the patch using a
single 'static_branch()' in the getppid() path, and basically
running tight loops of calls to getppid(). Here are my results
for the branch disabled case:

e78e8f2d83 kernel: prevent unnecessary rebuilding due to config_data.gz
When IKCONFIG is built-in make oldconfig will cause the kernel to be
relinked even if .config didn't change. This happens because of a
config_data.gz dependency on .config. This patch changes the if_changed
to a filechk so that config_data.h is only rebuilt when the contents
have actually changed.

a77aea9201 cgroup: remove the ns_cgroup
The ns_cgroup is an annoying cgroup at the namespace / cgroup frontier and
leads to some problems:

  * cgroup creation is out-of-control
  * cgroup name can conflict when pids are looping
  * it is not possible to have a single process handling a lot of
namespaces without falling in a exponential creation time
  * we may want to create a namespace without creating a cgroup

The ns_cgroup was replaced by a compatibility flag 'clone_children',
where a newly created cgroup will copy the parent cgroup values.
The userspace has to manually create a cgroup and add a task to
  the 'tasks' file.

This patch removes the ns_cgroup as suggested in the following thread:

https://lists.linux-foundation.org/pipermail/containers/2009-June/018616.html

The 'cgroup_clone' function is removed because it is no longer used.

This is a userspace-visible change. Commit 45531757b4 ("cgroup: notify
ns_cgroup deprecated") (merged into 2.6.27) caused the kernel to emit a
printk warning users that the feature is planned for removal. Since that
time we have heard from XXX users who were affected by this.

93a72052be crash_dump: export is_kdump_kernel to modules, consolidate elfcorehdr_addr, setup_elfcorehdr and saved_max_pfn
The Xen PV drivers in a crashed HVM guest can not connect to the dom0
backend drivers because both frontend and backend drivers are still in
connected state. To run the connection reset function only in case of a
crashdump, the is_kdump_kernel() function needs to be available for the PV
driver modules.

Consolidate elfcorehdr_addr, setup_elfcorehdr and saved_max_pfn into
kernel/crash_dump.c Also export elfcorehdr_addr to make is_kdump_kernel()
usable for modules.

Leave 'elfcorehdr' as early_param(). This changes powerpc from __setup()
to early_param(). It adds an address range check from x86 also on ia64

e360adbe29 irq_work: Add generic hardirq context callbacks
Provide a mechanism that allows running code in IRQ context. It is
most useful for NMI code that needs to interact with the rest of the
system -- like wakeup a task to drain buffers.

Perf currently has such a mechanism, so extract that and provide it as
a generic feature, independent of perf so that others may also
benefit.

The IRQ context callback is generated through self-IPIs where
possible, or on architectures like powerpc the decrementer (the
built-in timer facility) is set to generate an interrupt immediately.

Architectures that don't have anything like this get to do with a
callback from the timer tick. These architectures can call
irq_work_run() at the tail of any IRQ handlers that might enqueue such
work (like the perf IRQ handler) to avoid undue latencies in
processing the work.

bf5438fca2 jump label: Base patch for jump label
base patch to implement 'jump labeling'. Based on a new 'asm goto' inline
assembly gcc mechanism, we can now branch to labels from an 'asm goto'
statment. This allows us to create a 'no-op' fastpath, which can subsequently
be patched with a jump to the slowpath code. This is useful for code which
might be rarely used, but which we'd like to be able to call, if needed.
Tracepoints are the current usecase that these are being implemented for.

a57eb940d1 rcu: Add a TINY_PREEMPT_RCU
Implement a small-memory-footprint uniprocessor-only implementation of
preemptible RCU. This implementation uses but a single blocked-tasks
list rather than the combinatorial number used per leaf rcu_node by
TREE_PREEMPT_RCU, which reduces memory consumption and greatly simplifies
processing. This version also takes advantage of uniprocessor execution
to accelerate grace periods in the case where there are no readers.

The general design is otherwise broadly similar to that of TREE_PREEMPT_RCU.

This implementation is a step towards having RCU implementation driven
off of the SMP and PREEMPT kernel configuration variables, which can
happen once this implementation has accumulated sufficient experience.

Removed ACCESS_ONCE() from __rcu_read_unlock() and added barrier() as
suggested by Steve Rostedt in order to avoid the compiler-reordering
issue noted by Mathieu Desnoyers (http://lkml.org/lkml/2010/8/16/183).

As can be seen below, CONFIG_TINY_PREEMPT_RCU represents almost 5Kbyte
savings compared to CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU. Of course, for non-real-time
workloads, CONFIG_TINY_RCU is even better.

58687acba5 lockup_detector: Combine nmi_watchdog and softlockup detector
The new nmi_watchdog (which uses the perf event subsystem) is very
similar in structure to the softlockup detector. Using Ingo's
suggestion, I combined the two functionalities into one file:
kernel/watchdog.c.

Now both the nmi_watchdog (or hardlockup detector) and softlockup
detector sit on top of the perf event subsystem, which is run every
60 seconds or so to see if there are any lockups.

To detect hardlockups, cpus not responding to interrupts, I
implemented an hrtimer that runs 5 times for every perf event
overflow event. If that stops counting on a cpu, then the cpu is
most likely in trouble.

To detect softlockups, tasks not yielding to the scheduler, I used the
previous kthread idea that now gets kicked every time the hrtimer fires.
If the kthread isn't being scheduled neither is anyone else and the
warning is printed to the console.

I tested this on x86_64 and both the softlockup and hardlockup paths
work.

V2:
- cleaned up the Kconfig and softlockup combination
- surrounded hardlockup cases with #ifdef CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS_NMI
- seperated out the softlockup case from perf event subsystem
- re-arranged the enabling/disabling nmi watchdog from proc space
- added cpumasks for hardlockup failure cases
- removed fallback to soft events if no PMU exists for hard events

V3:
- comment cleanups
- drop support for older softlockup code
- per_cpu cleanups
- completely remove software clock base hardlockup detector
- use per_cpu masking on hard/soft lockup detection
- #ifdef cleanups
- rename config option NMI_WATCHDOG to LOCKUP_DETECTOR
- documentation additions

V4:
- documentation fixes
- convert per_cpu to __get_cpu_var
- powerpc compile fixes

V5:
- split apart warn flags for hard and soft lockups

TODO:
- figure out how to make an arch-agnostic clock2cycles call
(if possible) to feed into perf events as a sample period

bbf1bb3eee cpu_stop: add dummy implementation for UP
When !CONFIG_SMP, cpu_stop functions weren't defined at all which
could lead to build failures if UP code uses cpu_stop facility. Add
dummy cpu_stop implementation for UP. The waiting variants execute
the work function directly with preempt disabled and
stop_one_cpu_nowait() schedules a workqueue work.

Makefile and ifdefs around stop_machine implementation are updated to
accomodate CONFIG_SMP && !CONFIG_STOP_MACHINE case.

1fcccbac89 elf coredump: replace ELF_CORE_EXTRA_* macros by functions
elf_core_dump() and elf_fdpic_core_dump() use #ifdef and the corresponding
macro for hiding _multiline_ logics in functions. This patch removes
#ifdef and replaces ELF_CORE_EXTRA_* by corresponding functions. For
architectures not implemeonting ELF_CORE_EXTRA_*, we use weak functions in
order to reduce a range of modification.

This cleanup is for my next patches, but I think this cleanup itself is
worth doing regardless of my firnal purpose.

9b1d82fa16 rcu: "Tiny RCU", The Bloatwatch Edition
This patch is a version of RCU designed for !SMP provided for a
small-footprint RCU implementation. In particular, the
implementation of synchronize_rcu() is extremely lightweight and
high performance. It passes rcutorture testing in each of the
four relevant configurations (combinations of NO_HZ and PREEMPT)
on x86. This saves about 1K bytes compared to old Classic RCU
(which is no longer in mainline), and more than three kilobytes
compared to Hierarchical RCU (updated to 2.6.30):

	CONFIG_TREE_RCU:

	   text data bss dec filename
	    183 4 0 187 kernel/rcupdate.o
	   2783 520 36 3339 kernel/rcutree.o
				   3526 Total (vs 4565 for v7)

	CONFIG_TREE_PREEMPT_RCU:

	   text data bss dec filename
	    263 4 0 267 kernel/rcupdate.o
	   4594 776 52 5422 kernel/rcutree.o
	   			   5689 Total (6155 for v7)

	CONFIG_TINY_RCU:

	   text data bss dec filename
	     96 4 0 100 kernel/rcupdate.o
	    734 24 0 758 kernel/rcutiny.o
	    			    858 Total (vs 848 for v7)

The above is for x86. Your mileage may vary on other platforms.
Further compression is possible, but is being procrastinated.

Changes from v7 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/10/9/388)

o	Apply Lai Jiangshan's review comments (aside from
might_sleep() in synchronize_sched(), which is covered by SMP builds).

o	Fix up expedited primitives.

Changes from v6 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/9/23/293).

o	Forward ported to put it into the 2.6.33 stream.

o	Added lockdep support.

o	Make lightweight rcu_barrier.

Changes from v5 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/6/23/12).

o	Ported to latest pre-2.6.32 merge window kernel.

	- Renamed rcu_qsctr_inc() to rcu_sched_qs().
	- Renamed rcu_bh_qsctr_inc() to rcu_bh_qs().
	- Provided trivial rcu_cpu_notify().
	- Provided trivial exit_rcu().
	- Provided trivial rcu_needs_cpu().
	- Fixed up the rcu_*_enter/exit() functions in linux/hardirq.h.

o	Removed the dependence on EMBEDDED, with a view to making
TINY_RCU default for !SMP at some time in the future.

o	Added (trivial) support for expedited grace periods.

Changes from v4 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/5/2/91) include:

o	Squeeze the size down a bit further by removing the
	->completed field from struct rcu_ctrlblk.

o	This permits synchronize_rcu() to become the empty function.
Previous concerns about rcutorture were unfounded, as
rcutorture correctly handles a constant value from
	rcu_batches_completed() and rcu_batches_completed_bh().

Changes from v3 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/3/29/221) include:

o	Changed rcu_batches_completed(), rcu_batches_completed_bh()
	rcu_enter_nohz(), rcu_exit_nohz(), rcu_nmi_enter(), and
rcu_nmi_exit(), to be static inlines, as suggested by David
Howells. Doing this saves about 100 bytes from rcutiny.o.
(The numbers between v3 and this v4 of the patch are not directly
comparable, since they are against different versions of Linux.)

Changes from v2 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/2/3/333) include:

o	Fix whitespace issues.

o	Change short-circuit "||" operator to instead be "+" in order
to fix performance bug noted by "kraai" on LWN.

Changes from v1 (http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/1/13/440) include:

o	This version depends on EMBEDDED as well as !SMP, as suggested
	by Ingo.

o	Updated rcu_needs_cpu() to unconditionally return zero,
permitting the CPU to enter dynticks-idle mode at any time.
This works because callbacks can be invoked upon entry to
	dynticks-idle mode.

o	Paul is now OK with this being included, based on a poll at
the Kernel Miniconf at linux.conf.au, where about ten people said

cdd6c482c9 perf: Do the big rename: Performance Counters -> Performance Events
Bye-bye Performance Counters, welcome Performance Events!

In the past few months the perfcounters subsystem has grown out its
initial role of counting hardware events, and has become (and is
becoming) a much broader generic event enumeration, reporting, logging,
monitoring, analysis facility.

Naming its core object 'perf_counter' and naming the subsystem
'perfcounters' has become more and more of a misnomer. With pending
code like hw-breakpoints support the 'counter' name is less and
less appropriate.

All in one, we've decided to rename the subsystem to 'performance
events' and to propagate this rename through all fields, variables
and API names. (in an ABI compatible fashion)

The word 'event' is also a bit shorter than 'counter' - which makes
it slightly more convenient to write/handle as well.

Thanks goes to Stephane Eranian who first observed this misnomer and
suggested a rename.

User-space tooling and ABI compatibility is not affected - this patch
should be function-invariant. (Also, defconfigs were not touched to
keep the size down.)

This patch has been generated via the following script:

  FILES=$(find * -type f | grep -vE 'oprofile|[^K]config')

  sed -i \
    -e 's/PERF_EVENT_/PERF_RECORD_/g' \
    -e 's/PERF_COUNTER/PERF_EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g' \
    -e 's/nb_counters/nb_events/g' \
    -e 's/swcounter/swevent/g' \
    -e 's/tpcounter_event/tp_event/g' \
    $FILES

  for N in $(find . -name perf_counter.[ch]); do
    M=$(echo $N | sed 's/perf_counter/perf_event/g')
    mv $N $M
  done

  FILES=$(find . -name perf_event.*)

  sed -i \
    -e 's/COUNTER_MASK/REG_MASK/g' \
    -e 's/COUNTER/EVENT/g' \
    -e 's/\<event\>/event_id/g' \
    -e 's/counter/event/g' \
    -e 's/Counter/Event/g' \
    $FILES

... to keep it as correct as possible. This script can also be
used by anyone who has pending perfcounters patches - it converts
a Linux kernel tree over to the new naming. We tried to time this
change to the point in time where the amount of pending patches
is the smallest: the end of the merge window.

Namespace clashes were fixed up in a preparatory patch - and some
stylistic fallout will be fixed up in a subsequent patch.

( NOTE: 'counters' are still the proper terminology when we deal
with hardware registers - and these sed scripts are a bit
over-eager in renaming them. I've undone some of that, but
in case there's something left where 'counter' would be
better than 'event' we can undo that on an individual basis
instead of touching an otherwise nicely automated patch. )

f41d911f8c rcu: Merge preemptable-RCU functionality into hierarchical RCU
Create a kernel/rcutree_plugin.h file that contains definitions
for preemptable RCU (or, under the #else branch of the #ifdef,
empty definitions for the classic non-preemptable semantics).
These definitions fit into plugins defined in kernel/rcutree.c
for this purpose.

This variant of preemptable RCU uses a new algorithm whose
read-side expense is roughly that of classic hierarchical RCU
under CONFIG_PREEMPT. This new algorithm's update-side expense
is similar to that of classic hierarchical RCU, and, in absence
of read-side preemption or blocking, is exactly that of classic
hierarchical RCU. Perhaps more important, this new algorithm
has a much simpler implementation, saving well over 1,000 lines
of code compared to mainline's implementation of preemptable
RCU, which will hopefully be retired in favor of this new
algorithm.

The simplifications are obtained by maintaining per-task
nesting state for running tasks, and using a simple
lock-protected algorithm to handle accounting when tasks block
within RCU read-side critical sections, making use of lessons
learned while creating numerous user-level RCU implementations
over the past 18 months.

In hunting down the cause for the hwlat_detector ring buffer spew in

ring_buffer as something that is generic independent of tracing and thus,
suitable for public driver consumption.

2521f2c228 gcov: add gcov profiling infrastructure
Enable the use of GCC's coverage testing tool gcov [1] with the Linux
kernel. gcov may be useful for:

 * debugging (has this code been reached at all?)
 * test improvement (how do I change my test to cover these lines?)
 * minimizing kernel configurations (do I need this option if the
   associated code is never run?)

The profiling patch incorporates the following changes:

 * change kbuild to include profiling flags
 * provide functions needed by profiling code
 * present profiling data as files in debugfs

Note that on some architectures, enabling gcc's profiling option
"-fprofile-arcs" for the entire kernel may trigger compile/link/
run-time problems, some of which are caused by toolchain bugs and
others which require adjustment of architecture code.

For this reason profiling the entire kernel is initially restricted
to those architectures for which it is known to work without changes.
This restriction can be lifted once an architecture has been tested
and found compatible with gcc's profiling. Profiling of single files
or directories is still available on all platforms (see config help
text).

This core Api handles the hardware breakpoints through new helpers. It
handles the user-space breakpoints and kernel breakpoints in front of

One can choose kernel wide breakpoints using the following helpers
and passing them a generic struct hw_breakpoint:

- register_kernel_hw_breakpoint()
- unregister_kernel_hw_breakpoint()
- modify_kernel_hw_breakpoint()

On the other side, you can choose per task breakpoints.

07fe7cb7c7 Create a dynamically sized pool of threads for doing very slow work items
Create a dynamically sized pool of threads for doing very slow work items, such
as invoking mkdir() or rmdir() - things that may take a long time and may
sleep, holding mutexes/semaphores and hogging a thread, and are thus unsuitable
for workqueues.

The number of threads is always at least a settable minimum, but more are
started when there's more work to do, up to a limit. Because of the nature of
the load, it's not suitable for a 1-thread-per-CPU type pool. A system with
one CPU may well want several threads.

This is used by FS-Cache to do slow caching operations in the background, such
as looking up, creating or deleting cache objects.

	arch/x86/include/asm/pda.h

We merge tip/core/percpu into tip/perfcounters/core because of a
semantic and contextual conflict: the former eliminates the PDA,
while the latter extends it with apic_perf_irqs field.

Resolve the conflict by moving the new field to the irq_cpustat
structure on 64-bit too.

e162b39a36 softlockup: decouple hung tasks check from softlockup detection
Decoupling allows:

* hung tasks check to happen at very low priority

* hung tasks check and softlockup to be enabled/disabled independently
  at compile and/or run-time

* individual panic settings to be enabled disabled independently
  at compile and/or run-time

* softlockup threshold to be reduced without increasing hung tasks
poll frequency (hung task check is expensive relative to softlock watchdog)

* hung task check to be zero over-head when disabled at run-time

53ce3d9564 smp_call_function_single(): be slightly less stupid
If you do

	smp_call_function_single(expression-with-side-effects, ...)

then expression-with-side-effects never gets evaluated on UP builds.

As always, implementing it in C is the correct thing to do.

While we're there, uninline it for size and possible header dependency
reasons.

And create a new kernel/up.c, as a place in which to put
uniprocessor-specific code and storage. It should mirror kernel/smp.c.

22a9d64567 async: Asynchronous function calls to speed up kernel boot
Right now, most of the kernel boot is strictly synchronous, such that
various hardware delays are done sequentially.

In order to make the kernel boot faster, this patch introduces
infrastructure to allow doing some of the initialization steps
asynchronously, which will hide significant portions of the hardware delays
in practice.

In order to not change device order and other similar observables, this
patch does NOT do full parallel initialization.

Rather, it operates more in the way an out of order CPU does; the work may
be done out of order and asynchronous, but the observable effects
(instruction retiring for the CPU) are still done in the original sequence.
